A friend of mine is doing an AAR Live Blog of Europa Universalis ( you can find it here ) and he got me into Live Blogs as well, so I am going to try something I've tossed around a few times: a role-played Let's Play of The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, possibly the greatest game I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

For those of you unfamiliar with the game, it is a massive open world RPG with countless hundreds of hours of content in it. I have personally spent probably between a hundred and two hundred hours on Skyrim, and over twice that on it's predecessor, Oblivion.

FAQ's:

What is Skyrim?

As our tropes page on it states, Skyrim is the fifth installment in the massive Elder Scrolls series of Massively Single Player Role Playing Games. It takes place on the continent of Tamriel, in the frigid northlands of Skyrim, the home of the tough Nord people. You create a PC of one of many different races, ranging from the cat-like Khajiit to High or Dark Elves, to human races like Bretons, Redguards, or Imperials. You enter a massive, living world and guide your PC through it, completing quests, taking sides in a civil war, and stopping the return of a great, world-ending evil. Pretty standard fantasy/dark fantasy fare.

What is the difficulty?

Difficulty: Expert.

I'm no slouch at this game, but I find the prospect of trying to do a legit playthrough on Master difficulty very intimidating. I've done Master runs before, even challenge runs where I can't let myself die at all, and while I love the way it makes the combat more realistic(even bandits are no pushovers!) and stops you from becoming an unstoppable god of death, I don't want to have to deal with basic enemies destroying me. The only way to win Master mode is to buy great amounts of health potions and kite enemies for large distances, and I want this to be as "realistic" as possible.

Adept, on the other hand, is far too easy. You start one-shotting dragons and trolls with far too much ease as you get more powerful. Like I said, unstoppable god of death.

So I took the middle ground of Expert difficulty. Hard enough to make things interesting, easy enough to win without playing like a cheater.

What type of character are you playing?

This is truly up to you readers to decide, should you chose to comment. I am currently leaning towards either a Dark Elf spell sword or a Nord axe-swinging barbarian, most likely a Nord for the roleplay and flavor. However, I am going to decide based on feedback, and I have gotten a request of a Breton spell sword as well. Depending on how the comments go, the character concept may change dramatically. Up to you readers. Want your voice heard? Comment below!

As for the Civil War issue, I am not sure which side I will chose. Depends on how I feel the character is developing. Either way, you can bet that the PC will have some serious reasons to join both sides, and both sides flaws will be examined.

What is the style of this Let's Play?

I'd like to think of this as a kind of novelization.

This is going to be a role-playing based Let's Play, most likely in a diary form. I will keep it as in-character as possible. I will not be buying twelve hundred potions to survive, nor will I be carrying six sets of armor. For all intents and purposes, I will play this game like it was from the perspective of a real person. The PC will still be a hero, will still save the world(hopefully), but he will do so in as realistic a manner as possible.

I also want to avoid feeling too powerful. If the difficulty must be upped, so be it, I refuse to let my character one-shot dragons until far into late game, and I want even normal bandits to give a bit of a challenge.

The voice will be from a diary perspective of the PC.

Tomorrow, I will be starting this, with some general back story on the game and whichever PC ends up happening, and then diving straight into the Let's Play.

Best wishes, and please comment.

I'm voting for the Breton spell sword.

Also, this reminds me that I've got to get around to finishing Skyrim some time.

Pfff, FINISH Skyrim? One does not merely finish Skyrim. Skyrim finishes YOU.

  • spent over 200 hours, still not done*

I'm voting for a Khajiit ranger.

Schedule slip is in full effect, sorry guys.

Current voting(also counts votes from certain people who refuse to move their lazy asses and post on here) weighs in at: Breton Spell Sword: 2 Nord Warrior: 3 Dark Elf Spell Sword: 1 Khajiit Ranger: 1

Also, if Khajiit gets picked, I am so doing the diary in Khajiit voice.

"A guard spat at this one today, and called this one "cat-scum". This one was honored to receive that one's hairball of supplication, but wonders what a cat is."

  • High Rock, I make claim on thy behalf
  • In the presence of the throng boldly in the court: ...
  • Since the traitor, the pawn of the south, was slain,
  • Since the Skyrim has been covered in blood again,
  • Let my words unto the listeners be short;

  • In wisdom a man, a youth in years,
  • A Breton heart, the world shall hear,
  • Ancient words bring strength to the sage,
  • From the lips of valient a Breton mage ...

  • Quicker to a field of blood
  • Than to a wedding
  • Quicker to the ravens' feast
  • Than to a burial.

  • A whisper and the world shall know,
  • The story of the Breton Dragonborn.

Still haven't played Skyrim even though I own it now.

I'll look forward to seeing the story and what's different from Oblivion, maybe I'll finally start and follow along.

Also I'm going to vote for the Khajiit, although I myself will probably be boring and pick Nord because it's their land.

So Breton spell sword has apparently won out. Starting up my console now. Update coming soon.
