Hi people. It's time to get to Damcyan. First, we remove Tellah's equipment, for preparation for upcoming events, then we take a few steps towards Damcyan, but as we approach it, the Red Wings fly over, and blow it up! Oh crap!

We head in, and the castle is indeed ruined. Of course, this being an RPG, we must loot everything. There's a huge stash that we can find by exiting the castle and hugging the eastern wall. We mainly get equipment useful for later.

We start climbing to the top of the castle. Baron got Damcyan's Crystal in the attack. That sucks. At the top, we find the body of a woman.

Tellah: Is that...? It is! Anna!

Some guy walks in.

Tellah: You! You're that bard! Anna ran away because of your trickery!

Bard: !?

Tellah rushes towards the bard and we enter battle mode. He pretty much goes berserk on the guy. I'm sure we all know what happens next.

Tellah: You spoony bard!

Bard: No! Wait!

Tellah: Die!

Bard: P-please! Listen!

Tellah: Shut up!

Bard: Forgive me! Please!

Tellah: Take this!

Bard: Agh!

Anna: Father! Stop!

Tellah finally stops hitting the bard and everybody surrounds Anna. Anna explains that the bard, Edward, is the prince of Damcyan, and that she was about to return home, as she didn't want to stay without Tellah's consent, when the Red Wings attacked.

Edward: We were attacked, sir, by Baron's Red Wings. They were led by Golbez.

Cecil: I've never heard of this Golbez before. Who is he?

Edward: I don't know. All I know is that his powers were beyond words.

Thanks for clarifying. They wanted the Crystal, of course, and Edward's parents and Anna tried to protect Edward, and were killed (Or about to die, in Anna's case).

Tellah: ...You love him enough to give up your own life?

Anna: Father... forgive me... Edward... I'll always love y...

She dies.

Edward: Anna!

Tellah: Anna!? Anna! Damn you, Golbez! What manner of monster are you!? Bard, what do you know about him!?

Edward: He came to Baron one day and became the new leader of the Red Wings. He... *sob* He leads them in their missions to plunder the Crystals... *sniff*

We must have been away from Baron for a long time. Tellah decides he's going to go and kill Golbez himself. Cecil tries to stop him, but gets punched aside.

Tellah: I will defeat Golbez on my own. I don't need your help. I don't need anyone's help!

And he leaves the party. Meanwhile, Edward's still crying.

Rydia: Stop crying! You're a grownup! You're not supposed to cry! I lost my mom, but I'm not gonna cry anymore.

Rydia's speech doesn't exactly work.

Edward: I don't care. Leave me alone! I'm staying here with Anna. I will never leave her side...!

Cecil slapping him in the face, however, does work.

Cecil: That's enough! You're the rightful ruler of Damcyan, so start acting like it! You owe it to your people, and you owe it to Anna. Your Highness, my name is Cecil, and I need your help.

Cecil explains the whole Sand Pearl thing, and Edward pretty quickly figures out it's a love thing. He tells us about the Antlion's Den to the east.

Edward: The gem forms from the fluid that the antlion secretes when it lays its eggs.

...Too much information, man. Edward offers the use of his hovercraft to get to the cave.

Edward: *sniff* Let us be on our way.

Prince Edward has joined the party.

We leave, after Edward gives one final goodbye to Anna, who fades away.

So we get a hovercraft, and a new party member. Edward Chris von Muir is listed in game as a Prince, but is really a Spoony Bard (Well, duh.). Edward's main weapons are Harps, which can inflict one status ailment each. At the moment, it's Sleep. Edward has Bardsong, which lets him inflict various status ailments on the enemy (useless), Salve, which lets him split a Potion among the party (even more useless), and Hide, which removes him from the battle until either he's the last party member alive or you tell him to Return (useful once or twice). He'll automatically Hide on the first turn he gets after he reaches critical HP too. He also can't take a hit, so unless you heal a lot, like me, you're gonna see Hide a lot. At least his Speed growth's good. He starts at level 5.

I guess we're headed for the Antlion's Den next. I made a quick stop with the hovercraft to Kaipo to sell some equipment we don't need, so we'll start from there next time.

I find it strangely amusing that Edward's best ability is to cower in a corner and hope nobody notices him, if only because it makes multi-target healing spells stronger.

Edward fulfills, at best, a Medic/secondary Medic role when you have him in the early parts.

Since this is the PSP version, IIRC, he can be used later on where he can actually be useful.

Also, fun fact: stripping Tellah of his stuff before fighting Edward makes him punch the bard.

sigh, Tellah really should have spent his time using cure of Anna instead of attacking Edward. Actually, since Edward is so weak how did he survive Tellah's attacks. Gameplay and Storyline Seperation fustrated me as a child so much.

You know what's the best part of FFIV? How they take away all the best characters before the endgame. That's just wonderful.

Kinkajou: Yeah he's useful endgame in the GBA and PSP versions. He's also very useful in the DS version, especially as you can give his abilities to someone who won't die so easily later on in the game.

I had stripped Tellah's equipment beforehand. Which also answers Jeremy's question for at least this playthrough; Tellah only has enough time to remove about half of Edward's HP if he's using fists.
