Chapter VII: Child Raising On Mars

In this chapter, he follows the tribe back to the incubator where he was first found.

He makes mention that all Martian life is to some degree telepathic. They use it to control their animals, for instance, and their spoken language is simpler.

The eggs have hatched, and the incubator is full of young Martians. They really practice The Spartan Way; only the best five hundred eggs laid over the five year cycle are permitted to be incubated, and the children are grabbed at random by parents to be.

  • He muses this might be why they are so savage; no emotional connections, no nuturing during childhood.

Sola grabs a child, and begins instructing the child and John. Both learn quickly, soon mastering the language, but John, although able to 'hear' telepathy fairly well, cannot be heard or read at all.
