* AntiClimaxBoss: Some bosses in the Ark of Napishtim are disappointing compared to others.
** The second form of "Galba-Roa" is a joke compared to its first: all it does is hit its tail to the ground, creating an obvious ShockwaveStomp, which players can easily avoid by jumping. Sure, it can still take a swipe at Adol by using its claws, but only if players stay in front it for too long while they AttackItsWeakPoint; all this is mitigated by the fact the Galba-Roa has slow wind-up speed for its melee strikes.
** Even on "Nightmare Mode", the FinalBoss is underwhelming: its first form relies on a LaserHallway scheme with no direct attacks (aside from flame-throwing turrets, but these can be avoided and/or destroyed), while its follow-up transformation suffers from predictable attack patternsThe "core" lowers itself to the bottom platform, electrifying the floor, then rises back to a higher position, firing off another electrocuting wave at jump level; at the higher position, the core is exposed for attack after firing an easy-to-avoid SlowLaser and Attack Drones shooting slow projectiles.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Please see here.
* DemonicSpiders:
** A literal example with spiders after fighting the first boss in the game: this is a point where these creatures deal intense damage early into a play-through via swarm tactics, Stunlocking players indefinitely. The only way to kill them easily is to perform a drop attack; unfortunately, doing so merely leaves Adol open to getting stunlocked from ones the drop attack missed. Later on, bigger versions of these same creatures appear.
** Higher level versions of the "wild boar"-type enemies attack in packs, each delivering high damage by ramming with Knockback capabilities, all the while inflicting a InterfaceScrew. Oh, and the Setos, the birds in the Woods of Quatera, have a small chance of bringing in a higher level boar rather than the weakest variant, well before the player is ready for them; even overleveling for the beginning of the game and having the Leather Armor won't save you from what'll likely be a OneHitKill when you least expect it, and the only way to tell is by the slight color change in their rushing attack.
* GameBreaker: Creator/XSEEDGames's Catastrophe mode allows the purchase of STR and DEF boosting seeds, which don't have increased costs on Nightmare like with Vitality Seeds. Combined with the Nirva nest in Limewater Cave, it's possible to farm gold quickly enough that farming seeds becomes more efficient than normal leveling. With enough StatGrinding, it's possible to give Adol high enough stats to brute-force any endgame boss, including Majunun.
* GoddamnedBats: The near-literal OutOfHells (Invincible Minor Minions until players find the "Bell of Silence" accessory) in the "Limewater Cave", alongside "Adol clones", which are really tough unless players also acquired the "Rainbow Fragment" accessory to reveal their true forms, making them easier to take down. In fact, the area's boss "Orjugan" even summons the bats at higher difficulties. Furthermore, the scorpions in the underground areas (some of which are invincible on Nightmare Mode), and the dragonflies in the Ruins which shoot in a circular pattern, can easily knock players off the narrow platforms. Finally, color-coded enemies at higher difficulties require players to use the right-colored Emelas Sword on them.
* GrowingTheBeard: While it wasn't the first Ys game in western markets, as the first three titles got ported and brought over in some fashion or another, Ark of Napishtim was the game that really started to turn heads in the west. Meanwhile, after Ys Vs clunky attempts at action combat, VI managed to make it fast and fun like a proper successor to the old Bump Combat. It's here that the series jumped from a CultClassic and a legendary but obscure series to start really hitting the headlines and come into its own, put Adol into a bit of the limelight for JRPG protagonists, and set up all the gameplay for VideoGame/YsTheOathInFelghana to improve upon and end up as one of the top games of the franchise.
* PolishedPort: Creator/XSEEDGames's PC port, which runs at 60 FPS, allows Alma's Wing to teleport between most Spirit Monuments, and has Catastrophe mode. It also supports high resolutions and has multiple levels of anti-aliasing, while having low system requirements.
* PortingDisaster: The Platform/PlayStationPortable version is generally considered the worst version of Ys VI due to smaller screen resolution, lack of the Platform/PlayStation2 version's extras (such as voice acting) and for having LoadsAndLoadsOfLoading.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** The "Dash Jump" mechanic can be incredibly tedious to pull off, as players must press the attack and jump buttons simultaneously in order for it to occur, as certain treasure chests in the Ruins can only be reached by using Dash Jump. The [=PlayStation 2=] port of Ys VI, featuring Alma's Trials, requires a player's mastery of Dash Jump to even think of completing it.
** Upgrading your swords required leaving whatever dungeon you were inside of and then traveling all the way back to Port Rimorge, which isn't terrible thanks to the game's condensed size, but meant that you would have to retread the same areas over and over just to make further leeway until the inevitable return trip. It's bad enough that the 2015 Steam port repurposed the Wing of Alma item from simply being an EscapeRope, to outright being able to fast-travel to major Monuments on the overworld including the Port in particular, cutting down on the backtracking by a fair amount.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong:
** "Ernst" is suspiciously similar to "Moon Over The Castle", the theme song from the Japanese versions of the VideoGame/GranTurismo games. There's even a fan-made mashup of the two songs.
** Release of the Far West Ocean also resembles MOTC.
** Olha's theme from the same game, especially the TriumphantReprise, resembles the famous ThemeTune of Film/CloseEncountersOfTheThirdKind.
** The OminousLatinChanting in the cutscene where the Ark is revived and Galba Roa destroys the fleet remarkably resembles "O Fortuna".
** Quatera Woods is a sped up version of To The Last Whale by Crosby, Stills & Nash.
** Crevia's theme in the [=PS2=] version sounds similar to the Prologue theme from WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast, which itself was inspired by the Aquarium movement of Camille Saint-Saens' The Carnival of the Animals.
** The boss theme, "Mighty Obstacle", cribs much of its melody from Rainbow's "Gates of Babylon".
** "The Fleet of Romn" nicks part of its melody from Music/Band's "Call Me".
* ThatOneAchievement: "Because It's There" in the Platform/Steam version, which requires beating a Superboss that can only be damaged if Adol's at least level 50, have upgraded each Emelas Sword to its max and are equipping multiple stat-enhancing accessories. Having a serious chance of winning requires reaching even higher levels, which is extremely frustrating when level 50 is around the point where the game's AntiGrinding features start making Backtracking through the final dungeon show DiminishingReturnsForBalance. Finally, there's no real reward for beating this boss beyond the achievement, as the chest it guards can be claimed as soon as the boss is found (half-way into a play-through) by the simple expedient of merely running around the boss, opening the chest, then running away (since the boss' attacks can guarantee a OneHitKO). Catastrophe mode somewhat mitigates the AntiGrinding by allowing the player to farm stat boosting seeds, but it's still a pretty slow process and there's still a lot of EarlyGameHell to plow through first.
* ThatOneBoss: Orjugan, due to being an immobile BackgroundBoss, completely limits your offensive options (only the Fire Sword's SwordBeam LimitBreak, or swatting those hornet-like enemies back at Orjugan).
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Creator/Konami created the Platform/PlayStation2 port - although they replaced the sprites in the PC version with full 3D models, made it fully voiced and added "Alma's Trials", Bowdlerise blood effects were removed to get a lower rating from various video game rating and censorship bureaus. This version also runs at 30 frames-per-second, making it somewhat of a mixed bag.
* UnintentionalUncannyValley: The character models in the CG cutscenes of the [=PlayStation 2=] version look pretty weird, especially Olha and Isha during the prologue.
* WinBackTheCrowd: VideoGame/YsVLostKefinKingdomOfSand narrowly avoided killing the franchise because of how much of an InTheSeries entry it was. After spending seven years making other non-Ys games, while remaking the first two Ys titles, Creator/Falcom brought its audience back with Ys VI by breathing new life into the series with a brand-new MediaNotes/GameEngine and sprite-based design, all backed with improving upon the flaws of Ys V. Ultimately, Ys VI was the installment that revitalized the franchise.
