* HarsherInHindsight: The intro for 2002's ''Under Construction'' cites UsefulNotes/DonaldTrump and Bill Gates as being too busy/successful to bother feuding with each other. Fifteen years later, the two developed a very acrimonious relationship due to the latter's outspoken criticism of the former's presidency, which has yet to be resolved.
* HilariousInHindsight: In the music video for [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UvBX3REqSY Sock It 2 Me,]] Missy wears a costume which features a huge red M in a white background. Some people have pointed out that this bears a resemblance to the Gmail logo, leading to [[https://michaelsoftbinbows.com/img/content/img010.gif some hilarious memes made about it.]]
* HollywoodPudgy: Missy was genuinely overweight during her early career, but around 2002 she slimmed down considerably and has mostly been average weight or even thinner than average since then. She even lampshaded her more svelte looks in "Work It". However, on many of her later songs she still describes herself as "chubby" or "thick" (generally in a [[BigBeautifulWoman celebratory way]]).
* MemeticMutation:
** "I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it."
** The song "Work It" also popularized the term "badonkadonk".
** The opening to "Lose Control" is associated with the dancing Triforce from ''WebAnimation/TheLightOfCourage''. Many videos show the Triforce dancing slowly to the beginning of the song, and then dancing much faster to a mashup of it and another song.
* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: Her MTV Video Vanguard performance in 2019, recreating all of her classic videos onstage with insane set-pieces, detailed visual effects, and rapid fire costume changes in under seven minutes. A big get of the night was Alyson Stoner reprising her dance number from "Work It" a whole ''fourteen years'' [[TheBusCameBack after appearing in the original video]]. [[ShesAllGrownUp Fans were stunned to find out it was the same girl as before]].
* MorePopularSpinoff: Missy Elliott was previously a member of a group called Sista, which released one album in 1994 but had very limited success.
* SignatureSong: "Get Ur Freak On", "Work It", "We Run This"
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Her crazy music videos make her popular with kids but her songs are less than kid-friendly.
