1* AudienceAlienatingEra: The 2001 season is an easy contender for the worst in the series' modern history. The excesses of the much-loved Super Touring era came to a head as unsustainable costs brought an end to heavy manufacturer support for the series, and this coincided with an ill-fated buy out of the BTCC by an American company who didn't understand the series' intricacies. As the 2001 season was also the first under a new set of regulations, this led to a very poor quality of racing that did much to kill the BTCC's popularity from its 90's highs. The return of Alan Gow as the BTCC's chief executive in 2003 led to a slow return to form, but it's generally agreed that it took until the NGTC-era in the 2010's for the series to fully re-establish itself as the top flight of British motorsport.
2* MemeticMutation: The series’ 90’s golden-era featured commentary legend Murray Walker in the commentary booth. He’s going to provide plenty of this:
3** "The car upside-down is a Toyota!"[[note]]His response to Will Hoy’s crash at a 1993 Silverstone round, which in-turn [[ParodyDisplacement references an old Toyota UK slogan]] ("The car in front is a Toyota"). The moment also became a minor NeverLiveItDown moment for Will Hoy, with even Toyota UK [[https://mag.toyota.co.uk/brief-history-toyota-btcc/ having some fun with it]] in a retrospective on their history in the BTCC.[[/note]]
4** "'I'm going for first!' says John Cleland!"[[note]]His response to an onboard camera shot of John Cleland flipping the bird to Steve Soper during the 1992 season finale at Silverstone.[[/note]]
