* AudienceAlienatingPremise: A DarkerAndEdgier makeover akin to ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'' on a cutesy mascot, along with a lot of bad gameplay choices (no local multiplayer, and a singleplayer mode consisting of 99 levels with no lives, no continues, and no saving) ensured no one would be interested in playing.
* GameBreaker: If you pick up Line Bomb combined with Infinite Bomb, you're in for a treat. If you're on the receiving end of it... [[https://www.twitch.tv/protonjon/v/45869060 not so much.]]
* GoodBadBugs: As shown in one of LetsPlay/ProtonJon's streams, lagging out instead of removing the character from the game so the others can play normally will make you invincible.
%%* NightmareFuel: The screams the Bombermen and female bombers make when they die can come across as this.
* NintendoHard: 99 floors, one life, no continues, and no save option, making it more difficult than the two decade old original. As [=GameSpot's=] Greg Mueller put it:
-->"[It] is difficult not so much because of the way the game challenges your gaming skills, but because of the way it challenges your patience."
* OlderThanTheyThink: On 3 accounts.
** This isn't the first ''Bomberman'' game to have a DarkerAndEdgier feel to it. ''VideoGame/AtomicBomberman'' had the titular character with a new design that more closely resembled a robot. Also, the visuals were done with pre-rendered 3D graphics in a similar vein to ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry''. But that game also kept the same sharp game-play as the originals and primarily used its new visual style to have a different flavor, and didn't take itself very seriously at all. Furthermore, while Bomberman had a new design, he was still recognizable as Bomberman.
** The plot shares similarities to that of the original ''Bomberman'', where the protagonist's main goal was to [[BecomeARealBoy escape the bomb factory to become fully human]]. However, [[DarkerAndEdgier the tone]] of this installment makes it virtually unidentifiable with that game (or the rest of the series).
** The First-Person Bomber mode might have been inspired by the gameplay of the [[NoExportForYou Japan-only]] title ''[[http://www3.atwiki.jp/yamamura/pages/63.html 3-D Bomberman]]'', which was actually played in first-person view, unlike ''Act Zero'''s behind-the-player perspective.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Even before release, this was the complaint of many older ''VideoGame/{{Bomberman}}'' fans. However, this ended up being the least of the game's problems.
