* UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny: Even in ''Manga/OnePiece'', this is SeriousBusiness. Cross's lie that he and Mr. 13 were fighting over who is the strongest of the Four Emperors (and Mr. 13 said Kaido) leads to a street brawl among the onlookers that ends up setting half of Mock Town on fire.
* UnderTheMistletoe: There's two gags of this in the ChristmasEpisode. First, the other Marines on Smoker and Tashigi's ship put mistletoe all over the ship to get a kiss from her, leading to Smoker ordering/threatening them into taking it down. Then, at Revolutionary Army HQ, Sabo is caught hanging mistletoe along Koala's route to her training ground, and gets laid out flat for his trouble.
* UnexplainedRecovery: The Kung-Fu Dugong Boss breaks off his own shell to negotiate with Franky with ''[[TestosteronePoisoning sheer manliness]]'', and then in the next scene, he's jumping out of the water with the ''exact same shell'' as before, with no explanation of how he got it back.
* UnfoldingPlanMontage: Used twice for Cross's big plans, once when escaping from Navarone, and once when invading Thriller Bark.
* UngratefulBastard: Soundbite has no respect for the News Coos and the difficulty and bravery in their jobs. It's later revealed that it's because Coos, and birds in general, eat snails.
* UnfinishedUntestedUsedAnyway: In Chapter 68, Sentomaru reports to the Five Star Elders that the Typhon Laboratories' newest project is just about finished, but require a field test in order to gather the data needed to complete it. The youngest of the Elders sinisterly presents an idea, though the scene cuts away before he shares what it is. We find out a few chapters later: [[spoiler:deploying them to Impel Down, whose inmates could serve as guiltless test subjects]].
* UnsoundEffect: Early in the "Road to Sabaody" arc, Sanji's PunctuatedPounding (in which he yells angrily at Cross while beating Duval, the blows represented by assorted noises) ends with '''''"CONCUSS!"'''''.
* UnwantedAssistance: The trope's older, pre-split title is quoted by Nami when Robin bribes her with Crocodile's jewels to get her on her side, much to Vivi's ire.
--> '''Nami:''' C-C'mon Vivi! [[NotWhatItLooksLike Th-this isn't what it looks like!]]
--> '''Robin:''' [[DeadpanSnarker Even though it really is.]]
--> '''Nami:''' N-n-no, it isn't! I'm, ah, I'm... ''(Grabs the bag of jewels)'' See, I'm stealing from her, I stole this! I-It was all just a ''ruse'' to get close to her! Cat Thief Nami strikes again! Hahaha...
--> '''Robin:''' [[PullTheThread Actually... Those jewels were always intended for you, so really, all you're doing is taking my gift a little early.]]
--> '''Nami:''' STOP HELPING ME!
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: PlayedForLaughs, when Cross plays the [[Creator/AbbottAndCostello Who's On First]] skit [[spoiler:on the SBS]], which gets heard by the Minks in the Mokomo Dukedom. After Carrot expresses interest in baseball following Dogstorm's explanation on the sport, [[WeUsedToBeFriends he and Catviper]] decide to have baseball games between their respective groups. By the time of the Dead-End Race, their rivalry has both escalated and extended to the Musketeers and the Guardians.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:V]]
* {{Ventriloquism}}: The basis of the Noise-Noise Fruit; it enables the user to emit any sound that they've ever heard, forward or reversed, at any volume, anywhere within range of the user's senses. Soundbite had a naturally extended range of a quarter mile already due to being a Transponder Snail, but once he's fitted with a standard rig for a Transponder Snail, that already impressive range at least quadruples.
* VerbalBackspace:
** When talking about how incredibly large and well-armored Oars is, Cross is about to say even Mihawk would have trouble before admitting that Mihawk would cut him in half without even looking up from his newspaper.
** When Cross has his first proper meeting with Dragon [[spoiler:and the latter reveals that he's (accurately) guessed Cross's origins]], this exchange occurs.
--> '''Dragon:''' I deal with the entire world. Paradise, New World and all the Blues...individually they're impressive, but once you experience them all, nothing really fazes you anymore.
--> '''Cross:''' ...Not even Garp's stupidity at saying your name while saying he wasn't going to?
--> '''Dragon:''' ''(slight twitch)'' Almost nothing.
* {{Vibroweapon}}: A combo made by placing Soundbite on Funkfreed's sword form. It helps Cross battle against the [[DeadGuyPuppet Draugrs]].
* VictorGainsLosersPowers: Under Cross's suggestion, the Straw Hats have been claiming weapons from their opponents after defeating them, most notably Dials from Eneru's forces. In particular, Ohm's Eisen Dial ends up in Nami's possession and ''vastly'' increases her combat potential.
* VillainHasAPoint: Cross may disagree on the World Government's policies on many levels, but the one thing he's in full agreement with is the presence of Impel Down's Level 6; that there are some people in this world bad enough to lock up for the rest of eternity.
** Shiki may be a reprehensible bastard with an utterly sickening interpretation of MightMakesRight, but even Shanks has to agree with his assessment of pirates being the ones brave enough to take on the worst of the world for the sake of adventure and treasure... [[SubvertedTrope right up until he says that the sea ''only'' belongs to pirates.]]
* VillainRespect: [[MagneticHero Luffy]] manages to get this a lot:
** [[BloodKnight Lucci and Jabra]] admire Luffy's {{Determinator}} status and fighting ability.
** Crocodile respects Luffy's ability, mostly since it proves he didn't lose to some pathetic rookie but rather the next rising star.
** Eneru, while zapping Cross, claims that no one has ever stood up to him after this much punishment before Cross.
** Sengoku respects Luffy enough to [[spoiler:offer him a Warlord position after Luffy defeats Lily Carnation and has Baron Omatsuri buried with his crew]].
*** This goes the other way in that Cross actually respects Sengoku. Though he loses a good amount of it in Enies Lobby.
** To say nothing of virtually all of the other Supernovas, including characters like Kid and Bege. Though that doesn't mean that they want him to ''lead'' them...
** The Straw Hats cause so much chaos that Doflamingo openly declares that he can't wait to see the sheer madness the Era of the Straw Hats will bring.
** Cross's ToThePain speech to Spandam impresses Sadi-chan enough to have her copy down his ideas and state that if he weren't a pirate, he'd make executive at Impel Down within six months.
** The zombie of Long John is impressed enough after his duel with Leo that he [[spoiler:gifts the dugong his old nameless sabers and the only map to his legendary treasure.]]
** During the trip to Skelter Bite, the Straw Hats and Barto Club meet [[spoiler:members of the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates, both of whom offer them a position on their crews due to Kaido and Linlin having been so impressed with their actions. The offer is turned down though.]]
** After [[spoiler: Whitebeard's death, the reactions of fellow Emperors Kaido and Charlotte Linlin are shown. The Beast Pirates' Governor-General rages through the skies of Wano in his dragon form, roaring and crying through a storm created by his powers. Meanwhile, Big Mom gets one of her Food Rage cravings for [[DrowningMySorrows sake]], and even after she's given some, she still ''rages and demands for more''. It got so bad that Whole Cake Island was evacuated, but those who stay can hear her crying how the sake doesn't taste right and doesn't taste the same at all. Say what you will: Kaido and Linlin are monsters, but their former Rocks crewmate's death hit them and hit them '''hard'''.]]
* VillainousBreakdown:
** Bellamy has one when he hears Luffy's proclamation (amped by Soundbite), that the City of Gold did exist in the sky all along.
** The entirety of the Enies Lobby incident is this for Sengoku, who is increasingly stressed out and enraged by the ongoing actions of the Straw Hats and the other Super Rookies (even suffering a ''heart attack'' over it). By the time [[spoiler:Spandam spills the beans on his plans to overthrow the Five Elder Stars, live on the SBS]], he has a SlasherSmile on his face when he informs Spandam of his eventual fate once he returns to HQ.
*** During the same incident, we have Jabra, who after an utterly humiliating beatdown, can barely stay conscious. When he sees Luffy staring at him, just like how Lucci would, the last of his sanity ''vanishes'' as he tries (futilely) to take down Luffy once and for all. All he gets for his efforts is a pair of high-speed sandals to the solar plexus that sends him flying into the Tower of Law with so much force that he turns back to his human form.
** Moria has a big one, on account of the Straw Hat Crew sedating him and completely annihilating his zombie army before he woke up. So big, in fact, that [[spoiler: his Shadow-Shadow Fruit '''[[EnlightenmentSuperpowers AWAKENS]]'''.]]
** Blackbeard has the '''BIGGEST''' at the end of the Marineford Misery Arc. [[spoiler: After Whitebeard dies and Teach was ready to claim his Tremor-Tremor power as in canon, [[SparedByTheAdaptation Ace]] burns Newgate's body as Teach looks on in terror as he attempts to claim the power, and even gets agonizing burns on his hands trying to claim "his prize" only to fail as the corpse burns to ashes]]. This drives Blackbeard completely MAD. He begins ranting with death threats until he decides to kill them all using his Darkness powers, swallowing what remains of Marineford in the process to the abyss. It was enough to put an EnemyMine situation with all the fighting factions to stop him. Only by the intervention of Shanks and the Red Hairs, as in canon, was the chaos stopped in time.
* VillainousValour: Duval manages to impress the Straw Hats when he admits that he knows they'll kick his ass and destroy his base but doesn't care because he has a score to settle with them.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Cross and Soundbite. While not as bad as Zoro and Sanji, they're both snarky, and Soundbite's pranking tendencies often get on the human's nerves, as do Cross's insults. Point of reference for how much they really care: Cross was ready to tear Miss All Sunday apart when she stole him (who, as a point of reference, is not only a future crewmate but also a powerful assassin who he had pretty much no chance of surviving a fight with in a haze of rage), and Soundbite's concern for Cross when he fell ill was as clear as day.
** Vivi has an Alabastan term for this called "Kismet", which is paraphrased to 'two souls determined to hatefuck each other in the personality'. She quickly identifies Zoro and Sanji as one such pair, and a moment later, Cross and Tashigi as another.
** Vivi had this dynamic with her fellow princess Priscilla.
* VoiceChangeling: Soundbite can mimic any sound he's ever heard, backwards, forwards, or any other way you can think of. This is, however, the only way that he can speak, which results in him using an amalgamation of different voices for his sentences. Chapter 17 reveals that he's fully capable of picking one voice and sticking with it, and he explains his reasoning for doing otherwise: when he gives animals the ability to speak with his powers, he determines their voices based on what/who they are. The voices he gives them suit them, but his own voice is all of the voices.
* VolleyingInsults: Cross and Apoo exchange these on account of their rivalry during their first public meeting on Skelter Bite. At least until they can't hold back the laughter any longer.
* VomitDiscretionShot: [[PoisonousPerson Magellan]] upchucks the entire Typhon Genesis ultimate attack he was preparing after Luffy distracts him by [[EyeScream shooting his eye]] with Usopp's "Elastic Wonder" followed by a fierce punch to the gut. The vomitus is so toxic and caustic that it ''melts'' through the floor and possibly several ones below it.
* VomitIndiscretionShot: The crimes against humanity and decency in general gleefully explained by [[PsychopathicManchild Saint Charloss]] [[spoiler: on the SBS]] makes Cross pause for him to blow chunks out of sight of the Celestial Dragon.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:W]]
* WackyMarriageProposal: While promising to help Luffy save Ace, Hancock quickly turns it into a marriage proposal, only to be kicked by Sandersonia before she can finish.
* WaveMotionGun: The Thousand Sunny's Gaon Cannon is finally fired to punch an Oars-sized hole through the privateer and Marine blockade, giving the Straw Hats a clear path to Sabaody.
* WaxingLyrical: When the Straw Hat crew enters the Florian Triangle, Cross starts singing ''Bink's Brew'' to stave off the unnaturalness of the dark fog. Pretty soon his whole crew is singing along, [[spoiler: and when Brook finds them and joins in, Cross makes it a worldwide sing-along affair through the SBS.]] And it is beautiful.
* WeCanRuleTogether:
** A non-villainous example: [[spoiler:Dragon offers Cross a partnership in the Revolutionary Army after Enies Lobby. He's turned down for an official partnership, but Cross comes up with a counter-proposal as "''allies'' in Revolution" - separate groups (in part so that if one falls, the other can carry on), but still friends and working towards the same goal]].
** Two villainous (and one non-villainous) examples when delegates from [[spoiler: three of the Four Emperors]] offer Luffy and the Straw Hats positions in their crew or alliances with them. Luffy turns them all down on the grounds that Pirate Kings don't have bosses, though not ruling out being friends with the Whitebeards, since he is grateful to the man due to everything he did for Ace.
* WeHaveBecomeComplacent: Enies Lobby is so secure that no one would ever think of attacking it. As a result, the Marines stationed there treat it as a vacation post and are completely unprepared when it actually does get attacked.
* WeakButSkilled: Cross and Soundbite. Cross has a good tactical mind and knowledge from another dimension, but even with Zoro's Training From Hell to increase his stamina, Kureha's miracle vitamins to increase his durability, and Usopp's custom-made armor to increase his strength, his physical capabilities remain at the point where the only enemies he can reliably fight on his own are {{Mooks}}. Soundbite's Noise-Noise Fruit powers make him masterful in bluffing out and disabling his opponents, as well as mustering reinforcements in seconds, and he develops genuine attacks as time goes on, but he's only a baby snail otherwise. With their wits combined, however, and [[spoiler: Lassoo and Funkfreed]] as the main source of firepower, they're easily formidable enough to have a place with the Straw Hat Pirates.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Completely justified with Soundbite's weakness to salt; he is, after all, a snail. Also to a lesser degree, flour, as it completely clogs up his throat and renders him temporarily mute. [[spoiler:The latter ceases to be as much of a problem after he Awakens his Devil Fruit and consequently doesn't need to speak aloud to use his powers.]]
* WeirdTradeUnion: Most of the Yagura bulls of Water 7 are members of the Yagura Bull's Worker Union. The Straw Hat Pirates become friends of the Union thanks to Soundbite giving them the ability to talk to their clients so long as he's on the island.
* WeUsedToBeFriends:
** After Tsuru confronts Sengoku about not court-martialling Admiral Akainu despite him committing genocide on Ohara, she gets a faceful of just how much her old friend has bowed to TheChainsOfCommanding and the {{Necessary Evil}}s of being Fleet Admiral, and their bond is badly damaged.
** [[spoiler: After learning that their hate-filled propaganda turned the New Fishman Pirates into monsters, Koala tells Kuroobi and Chew in no uncertain terms that she is not their friend, claiming that [[ThatManIsDead the good Kuroobi and Chew who were part of the Sun Pirates are dead]] and that in their place are a pair of loathsome Arlong Pirates. The pair is surprisingly heartbroken over this]].
* WhamEpisode: Three in a row.
** Chapter 22. Small wham: [[spoiler:Lassoo joins the crew.]] Bigger wham: [[spoiler:B.R.O.B. pays back Cross's RageAgainstTheHeavens with a Snail Transceiver, a device enabling him to connect to every other snail in the world at once. He uses it to start up a radio program.]] Then ending with a massive wham: [[spoiler:Vivi joins the Straw Hats permanently... because the World Government has falsely accused her of treason.]]
** Chapter 23. Notable occurrences in chronological order: in retribution for [[spoiler:Vivi, Cobra declares Alabasta's secession from the World Government]]; the newly formed [[spoiler:Dugong Pirates]] help the Straw Hats escape the Black Cage Corps, and then [[spoiler:five Dugongs join the Straw Hats]]; and last but not least, the second infuriating cliffhanger in as many chapters as the final scene shows Cross [[spoiler:bound and gagged]] and Chopper [[spoiler:playing MadDoctor and about to dissect him.]]
** Chapter 24. Chopper officially becomes an AdaptationalBadass thanks to [[spoiler:developing a formula that essentially turns him into Mr. Hyde]], and Smoker, Tashigi, and Hina [[spoiler:enlist Cross's help as an informant for their new goal: forming a coup to take down the World Government and restore the integrity to the Navy]].
** Chapter 31, Skypiea Arc wrap-up. Soundbite's Devil Fruit is revealed to enable him to [[spoiler: hear the Voice of All Things]], Conis and Su, [[spoiler: inspired by Cross's defiance to Enel and his description of the world, decide to join the Straw Hats as their gunner, just like her mother did with the Roger Pirates]], and a lot of the crew is outfitted with Dial Weaponry, including Nami [[spoiler: getting Ohm's Eisen Whip]].
** [[spoiler: Anime/BaronOmatsuriAndTheSecretIsland]]. [[spoiler: Witnessing Luffy get impaled by the Baron's RainOfArrows elicits enough anguish in Sabo to restore his memory]], Luffy's relation to Garp [[spoiler: is revealed to the world]], and he gains the respect of [[spoiler: Sengoku after he kills the monsters that are Lily Carnation and Baron Omatsuri, [[CryForTheDevil yet allows the latter to be buried with his crew]]]].
** Chapter 42 has a wham worthy of Garp's Fist: [[spoiler: [[HumanityEnsues Thanks to another model of the Human-Human Fruit]], '''[[SparedByTheAdaptation Merry lives]]'''.]]
** More whams from Chapter 43, the post-Enies Lobby wrap-up: Cross replaces his baton with [[spoiler: Funkfreed]] and, [[spoiler: [[InSpiteOfANail in spite of all of Cross's efforts]], Ace, Whitey, and Squardo still lose to Blackbeard and are captured by the Marines... [[SpannerInTheWorks thanks to Aokiji's unprecedented interference]]. And due to Ace not being "injured", Cross has no clue and thinks his efforts have worked]].
** Chapter 50's ending: [[spoiler: Moria Awakens his Devil Fruit and uses a technique called "Niflheim".]]
** Chapter 52 is one wham after another: [[spoiler: Nami absorbs Cross' pain, Lola joins the Masons and turns Thriller Bark into a pirate's haven, the Florian Triangle is revealed to [[GeniusLoci be alive]] and becomes harmonious, Su has Coo use his resources to track down a legend called the Children of Inari, and ''Perona'' ends up traveling with the Straw Hats]]!
** Chapter 57 sees [[spoiler:Vivi finally consuming the seed of the Gust-Gust Fruit, making her a Logia]].
** Chapter 81 reveals where Cross ended up after the Straw Hats were separated: [[spoiler: the World Nobles' secret private HellholePrison island, where he's been left seriously wounded]]. Furthermore, back at Marineford, [[spoiler: just before Luffy, Ace, and the Whitebeard pirates can escape, Blackbeard arrives and cripples Luffy with a sea prism stone gunshot]].
** Chapter 82: [[spoiler: The Revolutionaries intervene at Marineford (with Dragon personally removing Akainu's hand to save Luffy), with the Supernovas also showing up to act as TheCavalry. X Drake intentionally exposes himself as a Marine spy only to then renounce the Marines for real. Blackbeard's crew of Impel Down escapees now includes ''Shiki and Byrnndi World''. Whitebeard [[InSpiteOfANail still dies]], but ''[[SparedByTheAdaptation Ace lives]]'', and he works in tandem with Hawkins to destroy Whitebeard's body before Blackbeard can steal his Devil Fruit powers. Hearing about all this days later when Coo manages to deliver a paper to him isn't enough to stir Cross from his HeroicBSOD, so BROB intervenes directly to reveal that Cross was supposed to die numerous times over, and that saving Merry and Ace was meant to be ''literally impossible'', [[ScrewDestiny but Cross did it anyway]]. This snaps Cross out of his funk, and he declares a RousingSpeech to the whole island about his intent to escape, [[HopeBringer inspiring hope in many of its prisoners for the first time]].]]
** Chapter 85, appropriately titled "Epilogue" is very short compared to the rest of the chapters...except it also has a newspaper article from Apoo and Coo's Free-Feather Report, detailing [[spoiler:Cross' death in Serpent, with the front page even showing his crucified body being burned at a pyre. One person watching the event has their arm raised in solidarity, revealing an "X" tattooed on their forearm]].
* WhamLine:
** This line at the end of Chapter 22:
---> '''[[spoiler:Vivi]]:''' Because the World Government [[spoiler:has unjustly and erroneously accused me of treason]].
** And this line in Chapter 23. [[spoiler:Like daughter, like father]]:
---> '''[[spoiler:Cobra]]:''' Today, I declare [[spoiler:Alabasta's formal secession from the ranks of the nations of the World Government!]]
** This line in Chapter 31:
---> '''Cross:''' Soundbite… YOU CAN—! ''*lowers his voice* You can [[spoiler: hear the Voice of All [[PrecisionFStrike motherfucking]] Things?!]]''
** The voice in Chapter 39 that encourages Robin to live:
---> '''[[spoiler:Saul]]:''' The sea's a vast place. So I guarantee... someday you'll find friends who won't ever leave you. No matter who you are, ain't nobody born into this world to be alone! Your friends are right there waiting for you, Robin. All you gotta do is get back to them! Share your life with them... and never let them go!
** A mysterious voice gives Luffy a pep talk in Chapter 42, culminating in this:
---> [[spoiler:"''Good luck to ya. Oh, and before I forget?''"]]
---> [[spoiler:A D-shaped smile flashed through Luffy's head.]]
---> '''[[spoiler:Roger]]:''' [[spoiler:"''You wear my old hat damn well.''"]]
** Chapter 50:
---> '''Soundbite:''' ''(about [[spoiler:Moria]])'' [[spoiler:'''[[EnlightenmentSuperpowers HE FIGURED IT OUT...]]''']]
** Chapter 61, where [[spoiler: Funkfreed]] tells Law what he knows about his DoomedHometown:
---> '''Funkfreed:''' Spreading the rumor that Amber Lead Syndrome was contagious, along with ensuring that nobody ever researched otherwise, which would inevitably lead to the quarantine of Flevance. And from there, the perfect excuse to massacre the entire country when they tried to fight back against it.
---> '''Law:''' …Why?
---> '''Funkfreed:''' Because… the Elder Stars knew that hiding somewhere in the country was [[spoiler:a family from the line of D.]]
** Chapter 63, when Cross is negotiating an armistice with a Sea King Elder, and the latter asks for a phrase that identify his allies. Cross has two words that come to mind that shocks the Elder to his core:
---> [[spoiler: Joy Boy]].
** The preview for the final arcs of the first half of the story contains too many to count.
* WhamShot:
** Chapter 70 shows possibly the biggest one of the entire story. After [[spoiler:[[LightEmUp Kizaru]] [[BearerOfBadNews announces to the assembled group that Ace's execution is in 10 days]], Cross rejects him and has Luffy check Ace's Vivre card showing it intact...until it ''bursts into flames''.]]
** The epilogue for the first half of ''This Bites'' shows a paper from the Free Feather Report. The front page is about [[spoiler:the death of Jeremiah Cross and Soundbite]].
* WhatIsThisFeeling: All her life, Perona has always [[ItsAllAboutMe put herself and her safety first]], allying with monsters and doing heinous acts so long as she survives. So Nami becoming her first real friend, enough that Perona would throw all of that away just to help her, is confusing and foreign enough that it drives the ghost-girl to a terrified, InelegantBlubbering FreakOut.
* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: A Devil Fruit that allows you to turn into a human child would be pretty much useless for anyone. [[spoiler:Unless they happen to be an inanimate object, like a ship.]]
** The spy/assassin it was originally intended for might have been able to use it for infiltration and similar purposes.
** Also, it would prevent aging problems. At minimum, the wielder could live a long life without arthritis and such, and then CriticalExistenceFailure from old age. At maximum, Cross might have another reason to bemoan the secret to eternal youth eluding him.
* WhatTheHellHero: Everyone is all but shouting at [[spoiler: the SBS during the events of Anime/BaronOmatsuriAndTheSecretIsland]], as they listen to the Straw Hats [[OutOfCharacterAlert slowly turn on each other]]. [[spoiler: [[MindVirus Through no fault of their own though.]]]]
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Cross relies first and foremost on his wits and his partners' wits and powers, having neither weapon skills nor the time and discipline to develop them (at least until he gets [[spoiler: Funkfreed]]). To that end, he had Usopp build arm and leg armor for him, and while the upgrades to it after the Skypiea arc don't quite put him in the OneManArmy category, they definitely make him formidable enough that he's no pushover without his partners.
* WhenItAllBegan: Bomoss explains to Franky & Merry about Sabaody's past and how it became the center of the slave trade when the first slavers decided to capture and sell off the nearby fish- and merfolk thanks to the rampant FantasticRacism. This was then followed by enslaving everything and everyone else.
* WhosOnFirst: Cross and Soundbite ''weaponize'' the dialogue to get the drop on a Government Agent who got the drop on them.
** Followed by Soundbite broadcasting the original sketch to the entire world. Busted guts abound.
* WorfHadTheFlu: As a Warlord of the Sea, Boa Hancock would be more than capable of handling [[spoiler:a CP-Aigis-0 member like Stussy in a straight fight - which is exactly why Stussy fulfills her role as an assassin and paralyzes, anesthetizes, and poisons the Warlord to try and kill her and frame Luffy for it]].
* WorkoutFanservice: Both Nami and Vivi admit they like watching Zoro when he does his strength training, when he's shirtless and working out with what must be several tons of weight at a time. He gets a much larger audience after the Strong World saga. [[spoiler:By getting a visual transponder snail, Cross is able to broadcast video as well as audio to the world for his SBS shows. One of the new programs is Zoro's workout routine with tips from Zoro about strength training. Cross has had to black list over half of all female viewers of the show for calling in with inappropriate questions and comments regarding Zoro.]]
* WorthIt:
** Cobra [[spoiler: declares Alabasta's secession from the World Government due to them scapegoating Vivi and driving her into exile. He comes right out and says [[Heartwarming/ThisBites she's worth whatever comes]].]]
** Cross's opinion of the scary story prank he pulled on the rest of the crew and their guests, even if it got him mobbed and beaten up afterward. [[BatmanGambit Just like he wanted.]]
** Cross and Soundbite say this as they hang out of Rocketman's window, in response to Nami's criticism that they'll die.
** Cross says as much when the truth of Duval's face is revealed and Sanji turns his ire on him.
* WorthyOpponent:
** After hearing Luffy's Davy Back Fight with Foxy [[spoiler: broadcasted on the SBS]], Lucci decides that the moment he can, he's cashing in all his vacation time so he can find Luffy and have the fight of his life. Jabra agrees with this assessment. Several chapters later, when his fight with Luffy concludes, Lucci smiles and states "It was a hell of a fight" before losing consciousness.
*** Though later, the leopard-man finds another worthy of the title: [[spoiler: Captain T-Bone, when he manages to outlast the Zoan in a bloody battle lasting ''two full days and nights''.]]
** Zoro admits after defeating Kaku that he was the best fight he'd had in a long time.
* WouldHitAGirl: Cross has no qualms about giving Vivi a conk on the head if she gets too generous with the {{Groin Attack}}s.
* WouldHurtAChild:
** Hammond tries to make a couple of fishman kids eat a Transponder Snail for [[spoiler:listening to the SBS]], or else he'll kill them. Fortunately, Jinbe steps in and says anyone who threatens that will answer to him.
** Absalom has no qualms in hitting [[spoiler: Merry in her child form]].
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Hancock pulls one to help Luffy sneak past the [[spoiler:increased]] security of Impel Down by claiming that Hannyabal [[spoiler:attempted to molest her during the routine search]]. Given Hannyabal's [[NoSocialSkills complete lack of filter]], no one even considers that she might be lying.
* WowingCthulhu: [[spoiler:The Bastard Random Omnipotent Being that turned Cross into a SelfInsert]] finally admits as much to [[spoiler:pull Cross out of his DarkestHour; that he averted two deaths that up until then had been fixed points to all versions of this world - Going Merry and Ace - which proves that he can accomplish the impossible and that he ''can'' make a difference]]. They [[spoiler:picked Cross]] for laughs, expecting him to be one of infinity, and instead, picked someone that turned out to be one ''out of'' infinity.
* WreckedWeapon:
** Cross's tactical baton gets cut up on the Bridge of Hesitation.
** Shu still manages to rust Yubashiri, and although it can be repaired, Zoro leaves it behind on Water 7.
** Leo's katanas break when he manages to pull off a RazorWind attack on Long John Silverteeth. After his defeat, John offers his swords in replacement.
** Shiki destroys Nami's Waver when she tries to escape on it; the engine is salvaged and later repurposed.
** Kizaru begins his attack on the Supernovas by melting Nami's Clima-Tact and dismantling Cross's sea prism stone-equipped gauntlets. A minor case, those, as Usopp fixes them up good as new.
** During the Marineford War, Mihawk's crucifix knife is shattered when he uses it to stave off an explosion from Buggy that Yoru couldn't fully deflect.
* WrittenRoar: The way Xomniac writes Soundbite's ClusterFBomb is taken directly from Berserker of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight''.
* WrongGenreSavvy:
** Captain Sharinguru thinks himself a comic book hero and that the Straw Hats are the villains. Conis reminds him that everyone is the hero of their own story right before blasting him.
** After confronting the Amigo Pirates, the serum that they had received from Dr. Indigo, and some hints about flying islands from Boss Kabuto, Sanji, [[GenreSavvy who's very familiar with comic book storylines]], figures they'll be encountering Indigo and his allies soon and wants Cross to start preparing plans now. Cross, who never watched the movies, provides a counterpoint in Oda's love for playing the long game, and with the perpetrator's apparent power level, this particular ChekhovsGun will most likely only be fired long into the New World. Unfortunately for Cross, ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld'' is coming up right on schedule...

[[folder:Y]]
* YearInsideHourOutside: Just before dropping Cross into the One Piece world, B.R.O.B gave him the courtesy that upon reaching the end of the story, he'd be returned to the exact moment he left, so no one would know he'd been gone (and to avoid any angst about never seeing his family again).
* YouAndWhatArmy: Invoked by a mercenary commander to a pair of fishmen guards arriving to safeguard the Straw Hats, their allies, and the slaves. The fishman responds by bringing a platoon of Ryugu Kingdom soldiers, Prince Fukaboshi and the Minister of the Left, leaving both the mercenary and Marine commanders speechless.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre:
** After Cross admits how much pressure he feels delivering the right message to the world [[spoiler: via the SBS]], having known all the hatred spewed in his own world and how numb everyone seems to be to it all, Koala tells him of an island that had listened to his words and began talking to Hack after they had been liberated (as opposed to a previous island where Hack was feared), and reaffirms to Cross that he is making a difference, that his words of peace and tolerance are being heard.
** [[spoiler: And after Cross suffers another HeroicBSOD from failing to stop the war, B.R.O.B. of all people tells him that Cross was supposed to die way earlier, but he somehow survived. Not only that, Merry and Ace's deaths were fixed points in the timelines that couldn't be avoided, [[ScrewDestiny yet Cross' influence allowed both of them to survive]]. The realization that he can change fate is enough to snap Cross out of it.]]
* YouAreFat: Several times in Chapter 54: Be it Cross commenting on Lassoo's increased weight that the dog-gun takes offense to, or Cross [[IShallTauntYou taunting]] his opponent Corto with fat-insults.
* YouAreInCommandNow:
** PlayedForLaughs during the Accino-Hiruno wedding, when [[{{Bridezilla}} Vivi]] tasks ''Third Mate Cross'' to officiate the marriage after the priest ran away thinking Robin was a literal Devil Child. Normally, it's the captain that has the authority to marry people. But because Luffy is tied up for trying to steal the banquet, [[BloodKnight Zoro is a bad idea altogether]], and Nami is a woman and the church isn't liberal enough to allow her to officiate, that leaves Cross as the only available choice.
** Played straight in Marineford [[spoiler:to the recently freed Ace when Whitebeard is holding back the Marines from reaching his crew as they retreat]]. Once he overcomes the shock that ''everyone'' else saw him as [[spoiler:Whitebeard]]'s heir apparent, he quickly gives orders to his crew [[spoiler:and ensemble allies to clear the way to the ships]].
* YouAreNotAlone:
** Cross does his level best to hammer this into [[spoiler:Robin]]'s head in an attempt to avoid [[spoiler:the events of Enies Lobby. It doesn't work.]]
*** He later uses it to snap [[spoiler:Robin]] out of a HeroicBSOD when [[spoiler:the Buster Call begins leveling the island around them.]]
** Cross says as much to Marigold when they meet via [[spoiler: the SBS]], that Amazon Lily can count on his support.
** Bartolomeo and the other pirates don't even hesitate to help out their [[spoiler: Marine]] comrades in the [[spoiler: New World Masons]], not when the East Blue is at stake.
* YouAreNotReady:
** A while before reaching the Red Line, Cross tells his confidantes on the crew about Kuma's upcoming separation plan, bluntly saying that it is necessary for them to survive the New World and that they'd be lucky to survive the first island into the New World, let alone any farther. No-one likes hearing it, and Cross especially dreads breaking the news to Luffy.
** Later on Sabaody, [[spoiler: after Cross's mindset is completely [[HeroicBSOD shattered]] by the news that Ace is still to be executed]], Kuma appears to Cross first and bluntly tells him that the Straw Hat crew [[spoiler: is not up to the task of raiding Marineford to save Ace when they're currently at maximum security and preparing to fight with Whitebeard, and that if they tried, at least one of them would most likely die in the process, which would be on Cross's head. He caps it off saying that their training cannot be avoided and that he will forcefully send everyone off by sunset, whether they want it or not.]]
** Luffy eventually acknowledges this himself after [[spoiler:entering Level 6 of Impel Down]]. The oppressive atmosphere alone is enough to make Luffy realize just how big a gap there is, especially since [[spoiler:the prisoners barely even acknowledge his existence, and the ones that do only see him as something to kill]].
* YouCanTalk: Everyone's reaction to Soundbite first translating AnimalTalk in [[{{Ventriloquism}} real time]]. ''Including Carue.''
-->[[WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck I CAN TAWK?]]
** Which is the start of the RunningGag of Soundbite making ''all'' the {{Intellectual Animal}}s' voices [[Shoutout/ThisBites Shout Outs]].
* YouDoNotWantToKnow: Foxy's response when someone asks why he has a wooden horse torture device in his possession.
* YouGotGuts:
** This is Whitebeard's response when Luffy says he would never consider becoming one of his sons, because the Pirate King doesn't have a boss. He laughs and tells Luffy that he awaits him in the New World.
** When Nami [[DidIJustSayThatOutLoud lets slip]] to Capone Bege that she just tried pickpocketing him, Bege bursts out laughing, says that she has brass, and says that he might have considered recruiting her if she wasn't taken, before inviting her into his castle-body to witness his ill-gotten gains.
---> '''Nami:''' Oh? Not worried about inviting a thief into your… ''everything?''
---> '''Bege:''' Girl, the walls literally have eyes and ears and I know every inch of everything in there like the back of my hand. The mere idea of anyone stealing so much as a spare beri from me is as impossible as it gets on these seas.
---> '''Nami:''' ''That'', sir, sounds like a ''challenge''.
---> '''Bege:''' That's because it ''was''.
*** Then later, Nami walks away from the meeting with exactly one spare beri in hand, and Bege [[GracefulLoser laughs uproariously]] and [[VillainRespect tips his hat]] to her.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe:
** Cross's reaction when he first meets Soundbite, realizing that a Transponder Snail ate a Devil Fruit. Shortly afterward, he has this reaction again when he draws the conclusion that eating his iPhone gave said snail access to the Internet.
** Nami and sometimes Usopp's reactions to Cross's adrenaline junkie tendencies.
** Everyone’s reaction to the InevitableWaterfall.
** Nami and Vivi's reactions to finding out what the importance of their dancer outfits is: making it so that Scissors can get across the Sandora by dancing for him.
** Jabra's reaction right before [[spoiler:Luffy]] delivers the coup de grâce.
** Cross's reaction in Chapter 43 to finding out that with literally dozens of options that he could have taken on pure impulse, the sword he picked up on the Bridge of Hesitation after he lost his baton was [[spoiler:Funkfreed]].
* YouJustHadToSayIt: In Chapter 39, after Spandam tempts fate one time too many, with an apoplectic Sengoku on the Transponder Snail that Kaku is holding.
-->'''Kaku:''' A-Ah, Fleet Admiral? Before you proceed to rip my superior a new one… executive permission to speak freely?
-->'''Sengoku: ''Make it fast.'''''
-->'''Kaku:''' Thank you, sir. ''(gives Spandam a flat look)'' You ''had'' to say it, you absolute ''[[PrecisionFStrike fucking]]'' idiot.
* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry:
** Soundbite parodies this trope in his response to Su's punishment for him teasing [[spoiler:the human Merry]].
--->'''Soundbite:''' PUT ME DOWN! You wouldn't like me when I'm revengening!
** Cross concedes to let Soundbite quote the trope verbatim once they hear the news about what [[spoiler: Shiki]] is doing to the East Blue, putting the hometowns of a good chunk of the Straw Hats in the crosshairs.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: This trope doesn't even begin to cover it when Cross finds out that [[spoiler:[[HateSink Saint Charloss]], of all people, is a fan of the SBS.]] And his feelings on the matter [[FromBadToWorse only get worse from there.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Z]]
* ZergRush: Coo subjects an enemy Merveille monster to a seagull mob, in order for him to get Cross's transceiver back.
* ZodiacMotifs: The [[BenevolentConspiracy New World Masons]], the secret alliance of [[DefectorFromDecadence decent Marines]] and good pirates that Cross organizes uses Zodiac themes for their code names, with the Marine members (collectively called the Zodiac of the Divine) using the Western Zodiac while the pirate members (collectively the Zodiac of the Damned) use the Eastern Zodiac.
* ZorroMark: Rather appropriately, Zoro's Three-Sword Style Burst: Five-Sense Ravager technique does this by etching the Straw Hat's Jolly Roger into a target.
