Intro: VideoGame/BravelySecond is the sequel to VideoGame/BravelyDefault where previous bosses are relegated to Sidequests that each contain a dilemma, requiring you to choose which outcome (and by extension, which boss fight and job class) you want. I'll be discussing a Murder Mystery type of story. It involves Police Detective Argent Heinkel, Private Investigator Konoe Kikyo, AmateurSleuth Sholmes, and his assistant Whitson, who turns out to be the BastardUnderstudy responsible for all of this.

Who is Yoko?

Yoko is the holder of the Yokai asterisk who hides behind a dim-witted personality. In reality, she brings out the past traumas that others have experienced as a SecretTestOfCharacter. She also has the power to erase entire locations from the world’s memories, as demonstrated with Caldisla, an island from the previous game. TheHero Yew Geneolgia is tested with whether or not he can bear someone losing what they love the most from the “Sword of the Brave”. She does this by creating a phantom called Danzaburo whom she pretends is her “Anisama”. Yoko even fabricates a story that’s deliberately similar to Yew’s DarkAndTroubledPast to trigger a response from him, giving him the perfect chance to explain himself and prevent someone else from suffering the same pain as he once did (at least, as far as he’s aware). Yew fails the test, admitting that he was too much of a coward to reveal his past. She is a StealthMentor to the heroes.

There’s a subplot where Yoko was the carrier of ThePlague which existed before the events of the first game, but the events surrounding that are largely (though not entirely) irrelevant to this EP.

Magnificence?

Yoko can peer into the hearts of anyone that she wants and reveal their greatest insecurities. When pressed on the matter, she admits that likes seeing whether someone comes out a better person, or is crushed by despair. That said, even after Yew fails his test, Yoko admits that she had enough fun to give the party a hint as to where to go next.

When she appears later in a sidequest, she gives the party fair warning that they might not be ready for what they learn. Edea is put through her own test when her loneliness towards the departure of her LoveInterest Ringabel is brought out. She looks like she’s going to snap, only for Ringabel to pull a BigDamnHeroes moment and console her. In the end, while Edea is sad that he has to go again, she still pulls herself together and succeeds her father as Grand Marshal of Eternia.

Yew is put through a second test regarding the actions of his father Griede and ancestor Foundar (yes, those are their actual names). Unlike last time, Yew perseveres, and Yoko rewards him by telling him that they weren’t all bad and had redeeming qualities.

She’s also aware of how dangerous Anne, TheHeavy of the story, can be if she were to come across the Great Chasm. This is why she erased the island of Caldisla (which is where the Great Chasm is located) from everyone’s memories. She only undoes the spell when the heroes urgently need a place to heal after a grueling HopelessBossFight. Sure enough, Anne uses the chasm to summon Ba’als to cause mayhem.

Is she a Bitch? Too Much?

Enough to count, but I don’t think that it’s too much. Yoko admits that most people who fail to come out as better people end up with a FateWorseThanDeath. While the party is given ample warning in advance, she’s still risking their mental health in an attempt to perfect them. Said attempt ends with a boss fight. Ringabel seems to consider her to be a high-level threat that must be stopped since she’s a VillainOfAnotherStory (though the game does not elaborate on this).

After her defeat, the player can fight some Optional Bosses throughout the world of Luxendarc. When you beat them all, you get a message from Yoko:

-> Yoko: “To my ever-loyal Minister of the Right. Keep up the hard work… and thanks for all the croissants…”
-> Yew: “Yoko… Yes! I shall redouble my efforts!”

Any Mitigating Factors?

She doesn’t do anything especially heinous onscreen (especially if you consider Dr. Qada from the first game), and the party comes to respect her despite her actions.

Final Verdict

Does she count? Up to you.

* MagnificentBastard: Yoko is the holder of the Yokai asterisk who hides her true nature behind a simple-minded personality. Developing a habit of testing the resolve of whoever she comes across, Yoko creates a fake older brother named Danzaburo to gauge whether Yew Geneolgia has the guts to reveal his DarkAndTroubledPast to the party. Although Yew fails his first test, he passes the second one which has him learn more about the bloody history of his family line. Finding enjoyment in seeing others pass her tests and grow as people or suffer more than what death can bestow, Yoko leaves the party without any repercussions for her actions.

I've come up with a few new ideas for potential Gods:

Dealer, Divine Assemblage of the GambitPileup

Stocke, God of MessiahCreep

Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, God of the PreInsanityReveal

When we first see him, Petelgeuse is about as AxCrazy as you can get. During Arc 4, he's revealed to have been normal and possibly even a NiceGuy. It was taking a special power called the Authority of Sloth that slowly corrupted him and an AccidentalMurder that made him go over the edge. The scene ends with him doing an EvilLaugh as he leaves with a GreaterScopeVillain.

Radi Jaeger, God of ???

Melchior Mayvin, God of the LotusEaterMachine

He can trap you in a mental world full of your great desires, but it's all a trick, and he's done it in the past and in the main story.

Magilou Mayvin, Goddess of Sad Clowns

Even though she jokes around a lot, Magilou is actually really depressed. She only works with the party because she has nothing better to do and is DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife.

Rukorou Rangetsu, God of Kukris

He dual-wields a pair of Kukri knives and hardly ever uses the sword on his back. Despite this, he's strong enough to be TheBigGuy of the party.

* Oppose: Nyotengu no Miyama
* Throughout a certain titular character's adventures, he was accompanied by two other humans who had many romantic interactions with each other in addition to his own romantic partner. Since the two did eventually become HappilyMarried (complete with children), they realized that they were fit to ascend the Pantheons.
* Miroku and Sango were appalled to learn what Tharja had been doing to her daughter, Noire. While she's backed away from the worst of it, they're also skeptical of how she's been using "underhanded means" of making herself more physically attractive. With all of her unscrupulous traits out in the open, the pair are unwilling to trust her unless they deem it necessary.
* They were also at odds with Hoss Delgado for how he hates monsters in general and once even got mad at Irwin simply for having Dracula as a grandparent. Since they've traveled with Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kirara, they know that there are good monsters out there.
* But even worse than Delgado is Mina Loveberry. Unlike the former who at least fought for good, the latter truly thinks all monsters must be destroyed, regardless of their alignment. This infuriates Miroku and Sango, with Sango remembering a time where she told a priest that neither Shippo nor Kirara would become evil. The pair have not been able to reach an understanding with Loveberry and remain enemies with her.
* These two were relieved to see the Doom Slayer acting as a force of good, despite his initially horrifying aura. While he brutally kills demons, he at least has the justification that the demons in his world (and some of the humans) are all evil, with some of them being especially heinous. At least he has an affinity for animals, like his dead pet rabbit.
* Likewise, the pair were glad to see more heroic Gods who had taken the job of DemonSlaying in VideoGame/DevilMayCry. While Dante has his silly moments, he's still more mature than someone like Inuyasha. It helps that he was successful in reforming Trish and changing Lady's low opinion on demons. That being said, they're less willing to trust Vergil, who cut his own son's arm off for power and removed his human half, which ended up getting countless civilians killed. While he seems to have gotten better, Miroku and Sango are still suspicious of him. after all that he's done.
* One figure that pisses them both off is Bluebeard, who kills his wives for no justifiable reason. Miroku and Sango would never consider doing that to each other, and don't understand why he would. They're at least relieved that he was eventually figured out, and everyone knows that he's not the gentleman they thought he was.
*
