Whilst stealing horses from Gisborne, Robin and the outlaws come across a baby boy, abandoned in the forest. Minutes later, however, it turns out the horses are marked, and Gisborne returns; Roy is captured in the ensuing battle. Whilst in the dungeons, Roy discovers that Gisborne fathered a child with Annie, a girl working in the castle kitchens, and that he'd lied to her and abandoned the child in the forest, instead of taking him to Kirklees Abbey. Later, Roy is brought before the Sheriff and given an ultimatum: kill Robin Hood, or watch his own mother (who believed him dead) hang.

Robin and the outlaws head to the castle to save Roy, only to find him riding away, supposedly having escaped. In order to lure Robin away from the others, Roy invents a story about the baby's mother living in Knighton. Meanwhile, Marian attempts to deliver food to Clun, which the Sheriff has kept quarantined in spite of the fact that the illness is over. The guards stop her and she is only saved from reprisals by Robin and Roy's arrival. Robin is shot in the arm with an arrow while feeding the villagers, but he and Roy escape. Before Roy can kill him, though, they are joined by the rest of the outlaws.

Taking refuge in a villager's home, Roy tries to kill Robin but is foiled by Much and the others. He confesses that his mother is in danger, and Robin comes up with a plan to save her. The outlaws break into Nottingham Castle the next day, but are captured by the Sheriff before they can rescue Roy's mother. The hanging is interrupted when Annie arrives, having discovered from Allan what really happened to her baby. The outlaws try to make good their escape, but Roy is held at knifepoint by the Sheriff; he gives up his life so the others may escape. The outlaws help Annie and the baby start a new life elsewhere.

* AfterActionPatchUp: After Robin is hit by an arrow on the outskirts of Clun, he and Marian escape into the village and she attends to his wound.
* AmbiguousSituation: The exact circumstances of how baby Seth ended up in the woods. There's no reason not to believe the circumstances of what the episode lays out: that Guy told Annie he would take their son to Kirklees Abbey, only to abandon him in the forest instead. However, because we never actually ''see'' Guy doing this (and he never admits to anything), a lot of his fans claim it's out-of-character and postulate that he gave the baby to a servant, only for him/her to ditch the baby and pocket the money that was meant to go to Kirklees, thereby absolving Guy of any direct guilt.
* BrickJoke: After they find the baby, Allan sarcastically asks if they're going to give it a miniature bow and arrow. As the episode concludes, Annie opens the package Will has given her to reveal a miniature bow and quiver of arrows.
* ComeToGawk: The mentality behind Marian's public haircut; to publicly humiliate her in front of a crowd.
* ContinuityNod: Marian tells Robin: "at least no one is getting their tongues cut out because of me," referencing the Sheriff's persecution of the Locksley villagers in the second episode.
* CulturedWarrior: Robin quotes the Quran, informing the other outlaws that he read it in order to understand what exactly they were meant to be fighting in the Holy Land.
* DueToTheDead: Though they don't have a body to bury, the outlaws hold a silent memorial service for Roy in Sherwood, in which his morningstar and roses are burnt on a small campfire.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Roy, who agrees to kill Robin in exchange for his mother's life.
* FlashbackNightmare: Robin has one about the Holy Land, in which he foiled an assassination attempt upon the king. It ends up saving his life, as it wakes him up just as Roy tries to kill him.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: In this episode, Robin tells Marian why he left the Crusades; he was injured foiling an assassination attempt on the King's life, and awoke to discover the King had moved on. Later on, he has flashbacks to said assassination attempt. [[spoiler: Notably, during these flashbacks you can actually ''see'' the assassin is Gisborne at one point.]]
* ForgottenFallenFriend: After this episode, Roy is never mentioned again. However, John keeps his dog tag and eventually gives it to his own son.
* HeroicSacrifice: Roy, who causes a diversion to allow his mother, Annie and the outlaws escape the castle.
* IHaveYourWife: Or in Roy's case, his ''mother''.
* IdiotBall: Robin intervenes at the gates of Clun when the Sheriff's soldiers get a little too aggressive toward Marian, who has come to bring food to the quarantined people. He takes their swords while Roy covers him, but for some reason they then leave these soldiers unattended in order to shoot the food over the walls -- so naturally it's only a matter of minutes before the soldiers catch up to them and start firing arrows.
** Also unclear is why Marian choses to go to Clun in broad daylight without disguising herself, instead of just waiting for nightfall and bringing supplies as the Nightwatchman. That she goes publicly just sets her up for the Sheriff finding out, and getting her hair cut as punishment for disobeying his orders.
* ImportantHaircut: Marian's public haircut is her punishment for defying the Sheriff, and a payoff in return for the Sheriff not listening to suggestions she associates with outlaws.
* KilledOffForReal: Roy.
* LikeASonToMe: Little John screams this in anguish after Roy is caught trying to kill Robin, right before the whole truth comes out.
* LongingLook: Robin casts a few of these in Marian's direction, particularly when she's holding the baby.
* LuredIntoATrap: Roy tries to do this when he tells Robin the baby's mother is in Knighton, though they're waylaid by events in Clun, where the other outlaws soon catch them up. Later, realizing there's a good chance that the outlaws will attempt to break Mary out of prison, the Sheriff and his men conceal themselves in the castle dungeons.
* ParentsForADay: The outlaws, with the baby.
* QuarantineWithExtremePrejudice: Inverted. The pestilence in Clun ended some time ago, but the Sheriff wants to keep the quarantine in place in order to starve the remaining survivors, thereby allowing him to requisition the village for his garrison.
* RuleOfCool: Lampshaded. Robin choses to impale Marian's food supplies onto his arrows and shoot them over the quarantine walls at Clun. She points out that it's a waste of arrows and he could just as easily throw the food, but he responds that it's much more fun (and cool) ''his'' way.
* ShirtlessScene: Robin whips off his shirt so that Marian can stitch his wound in Clun.
* TakingTheBullet: Roy shoves Robin out of the way when Guy throws a club at him. This knocks him unconscious and is the reason he gets captured.
* ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman: Will Scarlett is a carpenter, and so not only knows who designed the castle doors, but can open them with minimal fuss by tampering with the hinges. This is the ''only'' time we will ever see the outlaws breach the castle interior in this manner -- in later episodes, it's simply a matter of wandering in at their leisure.
