The dinosaurs are back. They didn't all go extinct. They just became an advanced space-faring race, and now they're back to take care of the Earth where the Humans have failed thus far.
----
!!Tropes:

* AIIsACrapshoot: The waiter at the diner undergoes a RoboticReveal when his circuits eventually bug out.
* AllForNothing: The dinosaurs, to their immense sorrow, realize that their efforts are for naught because every utopia they usher in inevitably attracts malicious living meteors that destroy the worlds they uplifted. They, and Rick, even drop the trope name word-for-word.
* AlternateHistoryDinosaurSurvival: It turns out the dinosaurs did not all go extinct, but a handful left for outer space and came back to Earth after 66 million years.
* AlwaysChaoticEvil: The sentient meteors, who only appear to live to destroy planets improved upon by the Dinosaurs and speak only in {{Angrish}}.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: ZigZagged. Rick casually proclaims himself on the same level as the dinosaurs, but though they don't brag about it, they seemingly prove him wrong with their far superior technology. They even have portal technology and traveled the multiverse, before deciding to focus on their universe of origin. However, Rick very quickly understands their tech and adapts his own to counter it, to the point that in the episode's climax the Dinosaurs are powerless to move him away against his will.
* {{Angrish}}: The living meteor spouts nothing but incomprehensible rage-speak and angry screaming.
* ArrogantGodVsRagingMonster: The Dinosaurs and Meteor's are presented as this, though {{Subverted|Trope}} because the Dinosaurs [[CurbStompBattle could actually beat the Meteor's easily]] they just wouldn't because they're SuicidalPacifist's.
* ArtisticLicensePaleontology:
** There's a voiceover song listing names of silly-sounding dinosaur names being capped off by the singer [[NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer stating all the names are real]]. However, "Elvisaurus" is only an informal nickname (of ''Crylophosaurus''), ''Gojirasaurus'' is thought to be a nomen dubium (it's probably just a large ''Coelophysis''), and ''Dracorex'' is now considered a junior synonym of ''Pachycephalosaurus''.
** A BrickJoke in the episode is that humans used the dinosaurs' remains as fuel (read: oil), with the dinosaurs shown leaving flowers at the site of an oil well. Fossil fuels are ''not'' made of dinosaurs, petroleum in particular is created from ancient decomposing plankton and algae.
** Dinosaurs that went extinct before the Late Cretaceous are shown to be alive in present times, and among the dinosaurs that left for space millions of years ago.
** Pterosaurs are shown to be part of the dinosaurs' society and equally sapient, despite not being dinosaurs themselves. Plus the fact that birds are dinosaurs themselves is never addressed.
* BalanceOfGoodAndEvil: The show gives a ScienceFiction version of the concept with the dinosaurs and the sentient meteors. While the dinosaurs evolved into "higher and higher levels of loving vegan godhood, another life-form devolved into an equally selfless hate-filled species of barely-sentient rocks" that seek out the dinosaurs as a form of AnimalJingoism, crashing into every planet that the dinosaurs colonize.
* BeyondTheImpossible: The dinosaurs are even more scientifically advanced than Rick is, and that is no small feat. They casually create a new portal gun (a portal ''pistol'') for him, and the pistol is not only much sleeker and compact than Rick's old portal gun, but the portals it creates allow you to see your destination instead of just a swirling green vortex. They're also able to terraform entire worlds and cause plants to sprout and grow from barren soil. And to highlight just how impressive they are, most of their displays of power are accomplished just by them ''thinking'' about it and concentrating for a moment, putting them on the level of {{Reality Warper}}s. Of course, this has less to do with them being smarter than it has to with Rick being lazy.
* BreakingTheFourthWall:
** Rick's fury at the dinosaurs fixing the rift in space-time:
--->'''Rick''': It was all canonical and shit, we could have milked that thing for a whole season! Or-or-or like a three-episode arc at least!
** And at the end once he's fixed portal travel:
--->'''Rick''': It's gonna be classic episodes, Morty!
* BrickJoke:
** When Rick gets a call from President Curtis the first time, he notes that this usually only happens for emergencies or if the Prez wants molly. At the diner, Rick casually gives the POTUS a bag of the stuff, and while he states that that's not why he called Rick, he still takes the bag anyway. Much later, once Rick has gotten the dinosaurs to leave, the two meet up again, and Curtis is ''quite'' high on molly.
** On the third planet that Rick and Morty visit where dinosaurs went extinct in the past, the aliens there theorize that dinos were a species that loved skateboarding and frequently did so in the crater created by the asteroid collision. As TheStinger shows, they ''do'', indeed, love skateboarding, and show off some pretty sick moves on their new planet.
* BrokenRecord: Rick repeatedly claims to be in the process of fixing the space rift Evil Morty made on his way out of the universe, though he also claims that he wanted to milk its concept when the dinosaurs finally fix it for him. He also claims to be recreating his own portal gun, though he finally gets it done when said rift is closed.
* CallBack:
** The episode starts with Rick watching the news, which reminds the characters and the audience that the space-time rift--originally created in "Rickmurai Jack" and utilized by the main characters in "Solaricks"--is still there. Near the end of the episode, though, the dinosaurs use their technology to fix it and close it up, since they "like being heroic".
** On the flipside, the fact that portal travel is still down is once again discussed, with part of the problem being that Rick resists fixing it every time Morty brings it up out of sheer stubbornness. [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Ultimately]], the dinos fixing the space rift as mentioned above ''finally'' gives him the motivation to do it, and the episode ends with Rick showing that portal travel is back up again.
* CantArgueWithElves: The dinosaurs are genuinely superior to humans in every way, and worst still are entirely humble about it so it can't even be said that they're smug. Every frustration people could have with them providing everything they want and need is unjustified due to petty resentment at the loss of purpose and honest observation that addressing problems was deliberately being procrastinated. The only justification for rejecting them is they're ''so'' good that their entire species is a DoomMagnet for living meteors that are as hateful as they are compassionate.
* ChekhovsNews: Lampshaded in the opening scene where Rick watches news about the mysterious rift in space which the commentator notes may be important to know.
* ChirpingCrickets: Parodied. A tumbleweed blows through the Oval Office during the montage where the dinosaurs retake global leadership and solve all human problems, meaning the President is out of a job. It turns out the tumbleweed was "Washington's First Tumbleweed", and the President puts it back on its stand before leaving.
* CondescendingCompassion: The Dinosaur's entire [[PlanetOfHats hat]] is that they are superior to humanity, they know they're superior to humanity, prove they are superior constantly and they do it while being obnoxiously nice about it. The fact that they deliver what they promise -- a utopia free of responsibility on a thriving planet -- just makes it all the more frustrating.
* ContinuityNod:
** In a FreezeFrameBonus at the very beginning, right before Rick sees the news story about the rift in space, an ad for [[Recap/RickAndMortyS2E8InterdimensionalCable2TemptingFate Eyeholes cereal]] shows up on the TV screen.
** Rick's MadLibsCatchPhrase of "I'm ___ Rick!" (such as "[[Recap/RickAndMortyS2E7BigTroubleInLittleSanchez Tiny Rick]]" and "[[Recap/RickAndMortyS3E3PickleRick Pickle Rick]]") returns again at the Oscars, when he shouts, "I'm Oscar Host Rick!"
** Unlike the [[Recap/RickAndMortyS4E5RattlestarRicklactica previous]] [[Recap/RickAndMortyS5E7GotronJerrysisRickvangelion episodes]] where it was brought up, this time, Morty will actually get to go to Boob World with Rick! (Offscreen, of course.)
** In "Rickmurai Jack" we learned the Central Finite Curve sectioned off the multiverse to keep the adventures of Rick (and other Ricks) contained to the universes where he was the smartest man in the universe. With the Curve destroyed, this episode carries the implication that the universe the family moved to at the start of the season is one of the universes where Rick ''isn't'' the smartest man in the universe, demonstrated by the dinosaurs being even smarter than Rick.
* CreatorProvincialism: The president of the USA is the only world leader to talk with the Dinosaurs, and is apparently able to take decisions for the world as a whole. Once again, supposed anti-authoritarian Rick is shown to be friends with him and go out of his way to help him.
* DeusExMachina: Inter-Dimensional Portal Travel had been broken for Rick ever since "Rickmurai Jack". Behold the godlike Dinosaurs, who end up fixing the system against his will.
* DoNotAdjustYourSet: Rick hijacks the screen at the dinosaurs' book presentation in order to reveal the truth about the dino extinction.
* TheDreaded: Morty's adventures have put the Earth in danger so many times that anytime he actually shows up for school, they initiate a Morty Protocol where the students duck and cover.
* DumbDinos: Inverted. The dinosaurs are actually highly intelligent, peaceful beings that turn whole worlds into utopias wherever they go. Unfortunately, their intelligence and kindness end up attracting evil asteroids bent on wiping out every planet of them.
* EpicFail: On the third alien planet that the dinosaurs colonized, which claims that they were a species that loved to skateboard, Rick decides to ride a skateboard down from the top of the crater to the bottom to investigate, a la ''[[VideoGame/TonyHawksProSkater Pro Skater 3]]''. He immediately screws it up and falls the entire way down, since, as Morty points out, that's actually one of the hardest moves in skateboarding.
* {{Foil}}: The dinosaurs to Rick. Like Rick, they are so impossibly advanced that they've basically ascended to {{Physical God}}s able to do anything they want and go anywhere they please. The key difference is that Rick hoards his technology for his own use and his vast knowledge of existence is the catalyst for him being such a cynical and detached StrawNihilist; but the dinosaurs are [[TheAntiNihilist Anti-Nihilists]] who have dedicated themselves to traveling the cosmos using their powers to help lesser species flourish and terraforming worlds into utopias. And while Rick usually doesn't care about the chaos he leaves behind in his adventures, the dinosaurs are genuinely compassionate and are horrified to learn that all the past civilizations they've helped were wiped out after they left[[note]]It should be noted that life did return to the worlds the asteroids hit, just like Earth, it was just the dino-backed societies that were destroyed[[/note]].
* ExactWords: A stealth one, but in the diner the cook tells the president that he never cooked ribs for money. It then turns out he is an automaton created by Rick, and as such he is only cooking ribs because that's his program.
* FutureImperfect: Each of the [[RuleOfThree three]] alien planets the dinosaurs colonized in the past, where they have all since gone extinct from asteroid collisions, have their own seemingly-terrible theories about what the dinos were like and what they used the asteroid crater for (not understanding that the asteroid is what killed them all): the first planet's life speculates that the crater was an amphitheater where they would sing and perform, the second planet thinks it was a communal "soup bowl" where they shared meals, and the third theorizes that it was a skateboarding arena. Well, at least there was some truth about the last one [[BrickJoke as revealed]] in TheStinger.
* GeniusLoci: The meteor that killed the dinosaurs turns out to be a species of perpetually angry asteroids that slam into any planet with dinosaurs.
* GoodIsBoring: The leaders of the world concede control to the dinosaurs knowing that if they refused, the world's impoverished would overthrow them. Eventually, though, everyone gets tired of the utopian existence the dinosaurs usher in. When the dinos are forced to leave, newspapers say everyone is far less happy and problems are worse than ever, just like they like it.
* HeroAntagonist: The dinosaurs are genuinely altruistic and effective at solving humanity's problems. Their presence causes the central conflict, but it's not really their fault.
* HeroicSuicide: The dinosaurs go to Mars and attempt to let the meteor kill them there after discovering all the planets they previously helped were struck by meteors due to their presence there so that no more worlds with sentient life will be harmed. Rick narrowly manages to convince them otherwise by putting himself on-site, betting that the dinos' altruistic nature will prioritize his survival over their suicide, and using his tech to block their attempts to teleport him away, ensuring that the only way for them to save his life is by destroying the meteor.
* HumansAreBastards: The dinosaurs avoid outright labeling humans as such despite what they have been doing in their absence. They instead insist that they "tried their best".
** Humans are shown to fulfill this trope so much that even when the dinosaurs literately create a utopia where humans don't have to work and are free to pursue any dream, hobby or passion. Instead of deciding to grow as a race, collaborate with the dinosaurs and create new purposes for themselves. Humanity collectively decides they would rather go back to ruining the planet, pretend to care about fixing problems they create and return to a society based on economy and employment.
* {{Hypocrite}}: When the dinosaurs learn about the sentient meteor coming to wipe out the Earth, they admit that they have been procrastinating on finding a non-violent solution, the same kind of problem-avoiding they had accused humanity of doing when they first arrived.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: As per usual, Rick can't control his arrogance when faces with beings that are more smarter than he is.
* InstantlyProvenWrong: When Beth complains about how the dinosaurs took over the Earth and relinquished humanity of their duties, she states that "we didn't need their help" because "this house recycles". It then immediately cuts to a raptor outside their window throwing the plastic bottles and soda cans in their garbage can into the blue bin.
* JustTheIntroductionToTheOpposites: Rick demonstrates his restored portal tech by teleporting in a walking tophat person who wears a tiny human on his head.
* KentBrockmanNews: Massive [=UFOs=] are appearing all over the world! But first, Peter's Pizza Corner![[note]]It's cheese![[/note]]
* LovecraftLite:
** When Rick first demonstrates his glitchy new portal gun to Morty, the portal he opens has the Cthulhu-esque creature from the opening credits stick its head through and roars. Rick wards it off with a spray bottle like it's a naughty cat.
** The hateful meteors targeting the altruistic dinosaurs present a relatively mundane kind of CosmicHorrorStory. A utopia can never last because a massive rock drifting somewhere in space that hates everything will sense the dinos' selflessness somehow and be driven to destroy their planets to extinguish all life. These meteors can be destroyed, but the dinosaurs are ''so'' all-loving that they won't even do so in self-defense, only in order to save another life form besides themselves.
* MicDrop: Rick smashes his microphone on the ground in victory after revealing the truth about the dinos.
* NotMakingThisUpDisclaimer: The song about all the silly dinosaur names notes at the end that they are in fact real names.
* NotMeThisTime: Morty is such a DoomMagnet that his high school has a duck-and-cover protocol whenever he actually comes to class. A huge alien ship suddenly appears above the school (and in other locales around the world), and Mr. Goldenfold angrily demands to know what Morty did ''this'' time. Morty tells him he didn't do anything, and this time, it's true.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** The dinosaurs are zen altruists, but them fixing the rift at the end is difficult to interpret as anything but passive-aggression after Rick previously declined their aid in fixing it. ''Especially'' after Rick forced their hand into [[TheCorruptor killing the living meteor to save him]]. The Stinger also shows that their favorite pastime is skateboarding.
** Even Rick, the "smartest man in the multiverse", sucks at skateboarding.
---> '''Rick:''' "It looked so easy in ''[[VideoGame/TonyHawksProSkater Pro Skater 3]]''!"
* OhCrap:
** Beth complains how the dinosaurs fixing everything has left everyone content but unemployed and without purpose. She then expresses a PrecisionFStrike when Rick summarizes that she, and the rest of the family, are now at Jerry's level with nothing to do.
** Later on, Rick realizes this when the dinosaurs fix the rift and gets pissed off about it.
* OmnicidalManiac: The dinosaurs are so advanced, altruistic, and humble that their mere existence attracts the attention of their living antithesis: sentient meteorites, which evolved into the most primitive, hate-filled, and destructive life forms possible, and have devoted their entire existence to annihilating the dinosaurs and everything they fix.
* PainfulTransformation: Discussed by Morty who is surprised that the dinosaurs' StrippedToTheBone teleport technology doesn't hurt.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: The undertone of Rick's conflict with the dinosaurs. They sincerely want to help, but Rick considers himself equal to them (a claim that proves debatable at best) and resents any implication he needs their help. After he forces their hand to destroy a living meteor to save his life (when they were otherwise willing to allow it to kill them), they immediately fix the space-time rift he said he was going to get around to closing because "we just love helping", forcing him to actually finish recreating portal tech to travel the multiverse.
* PetTheDog: Once Rick fixes portal travel, the first thing he plans to do with it is take Morty to Boob World. That is, after he opens up a bunch of other portals and sends Morty flying between them to celebrate.
* PhlebotinumKilledTheDinosaurs: It turns out the dinosaurs are so kind, intelligent, and selfless that their existence attracts beings of pure destructive hatred: living sentient meteors that eventually collide with any planet which the dinosaurs settle on.
* ProducePelting: The audience at the stadium throws their dino toys on the stage in protest after they learn about the fact the utopia the dinosaurs brought them doomed them to be hit by a sentient asteroid. One kid in particular declares he prefers trains over dinosaurs with that revelation, which they find especially hurtful.
* PunyHumans: The dinosaurs return and are surprised to find [[SonOfAnApe "Monkeys went bald?"]], explaining later that humanity's mammal ancestors were essentially like squirrels to them. Averted in that they don't look down on humanity after evolving beyond "non-constructive criticism", and peacefully assume custody of the Earth to do what they've done on other planets throughout the universe, uplift the standard of living into a utopia.
* RaptorAttack: Raptors in the episode are shown as lightly feathered or featherless altogether, rather than being feathered as birds.
* ResolvedNoodleIncident: Rick is constantly being referred to as "The Smartest Mammal in the Universe". In this episode we meet the non-mammals that rival Rick's intelligence.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: The third alien planet's dominant species is wrong that the giant crater on their planet was used by the dinosaurs for skateboarding, since the impact that created this crater killed them all. However, they do turn out to be right that the dinosaurs love to skateboard.
* RuleOfThree:
** Though many more dinosaurs do come back to Earth, we only see three of them--a Brachiosaurus, a Triceratops, and a T-Rex--speak, and they seem to act as the spokespeople for their whole species, always appearing together while the audience only gets brief glimpses of any of the others.
** Rick and Morty visit three other alien planets where dinosaurs previously helped civilization flourish and then went extinct. All three share a similarly-sized crater where they supposedly died, though the inhabitants who lived since have different takes on what those craters were for.
* ScrewYouElves: Jerry turns against the dinosaurs when he publishes a manuscript to help people cope with their loss of purpose in their new utopia lives, and the dinos decide to distribute it to the whole world, but take Jerry's name off of it because they figure that, based on the content, "whoever wrote it must be above needing credit". The rest of humanity joins in when Rick reveals that their virtues are magnets for suicidally hateful, extinction-level meteorites.
* SheepInSheepsClothing: Rick, believing that the dinosaurs are TooGoodToBeTrue, decides to investigate the other planets they previously helped, and he and Morty discover that all of them were, like Earth, eventually struck by a huge asteroid that made all the dinos still living there go extinct, and now that they've returned to Earth again, another such asteroid is heading right for the planet. However, he also realizes that the dinos truly had no idea this was happening, and when he reveals all of this to everyone on Earth, they're as upset to learn about it as the humans are. They really are as selfless and kind as they always appeared to be, and decide fairly quickly to leave Earth to spare its population from being killed by the asteroid.
%%* ShoutOut: shoutouts for Rick and Morty are collected centrally at ShoutOut/RickAndMorty
* SpinningPaper: Used for the montage showing how the dinosaurs start to change things around on Earth.
* SkewedPriorities: Jerry cares more about the fact that his name isn't on the book he wrote than the fact that the dinosaurs are literally distributing a copy of his book to ''every person on earth''.
* StatusQuoIsGod:
** After "Rickmurai Jack", it seemed like NothingIsTheSameAnymore for at least a while, and for the first half of this season, Rick has been unable to use portal travel and needed to use the black hole in space created in that episode to move between dimensions (or use his ship for all same-dimension travel). By the end of this episode, the dinos have repaired/closed the rift and Rick has fixed his portal gun, resetting interdimensional travel back to where it has been for the vast majority of the show.
** In this episode, the dinosaurs return to Earth from their interstellar travels and quickly turn human society into a utopia, solving all the world's conflicts and inequality. As several of the characters quickly realize, [[DeusExMachina having no conflict and all your problems solved by an outside force]] is [[VictoryIsBoring incredibly boring]]. Everything is undone about three-quarters into the episode once they all learn the dinosaurs' good deeds are attracting a hostile sentient meteor and they choose to leave.
* TheStinger: The dinosaurs find a lifeless planet in space to settle on where they can live out the rest of their days without putting any other species in danger. Content with this, they prove they [[BrickJoke can, in fact, skateboard after all]], and have a great time doing so in their new home.
* StrippedToTheBone: The dinosaur teleportation effect strips the target in layers as it sends them to their destination (skin, muscles, bones), then reassembles them in reverse order on the other end. Despite being quick and even painless, those teleported are aware of what is happening, as Morty is briefly freaked out by seeing his own skeleton.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Mr. Goldenfold claims that when he was previously "The Facultied" he was forced to lick a toilet seat for several hours. Then he defensively asserts to no one in particular that he was definitely not in control over his own body when he did that. Reminder that Mr. Goldenfold is established to have a poop-eating problem.
* TakeThat:
** The Dinosaurs end up on ''[[Creator/JoeRogan The Joe Rogan Experience]]'' during their press circuit to discuss the asteroid heading for Earth. Joe Rogan (wearing a "DMT-Rex" t-shirt and drinking cans of CBD beer) suggests that the asteroid doesn't exist and then completely changes the subject by offering to show the dinosaurs a "rear naked chokehold."
** Morty says the dinosaurs "[[PaedoHunt kicked pedophiles]] off Platform/TikTok" and as a result Summer's videos are getting zero views or likes, [[DontExplainTheJoke implying the platform is nothing but predators]].
** The US President and other world leaders are depicted as outright enjoying a world where they can just ''pretend'' to solve problems without actually having to do anything. The only reason they ceded control was that they knew all their poorest constituents would near immediately revolt.
** The second planet Rick and Morty visit that the dinosaurs previously worked on has the paleontologist explaining to them that they plan on producing a series of "increasingly terrible movies" [[Franchise/JurassicPark about dinosaurs being revived through cloning and presented in a public zoo.]]
** Rick uses Creator/SeanPenn as an example of someone who has fucked up so badly in the past, they have to virtue signal hard to make up for it.
** The third planet Rick and Morty visit are busy making "[[Franchise/JurassicPark a series of increasingly terrible movies]]" about their dinosaurs.
* ThinkingUpPortals: Near literally when the dinosaurs restore portal tech to Rick by mentally replicating a Portal ''Pistol'' for him. It's [[PurpleIsPowerful colored purple]] and the portals it makes are translucent so one can see their destination. Rick smashes it because he dislikes being one-upped.
* ThrowTheDogABone:
** The portal gun is fixed and Morty finally gets to go to Boob World! (Though only after Rick sends him flying through a bunch of portals first.)
** In spite of having been kicked off of Earth and basically barred from ever helping any other species ever again, the Dinosaurs are shown to enjoy their time on their new home planet as they can spend their time on their favourite hobby of skateboarding.
* TooGoodToBeTrue: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]. Rick initially thinks that the Dinosaurs are hiding something, but it turns out that they truly are as altruistic as they present themselves to be. They genuinely didn't know about the meteor destroying all their civilizations and are horrified to learn about it.
* {{Ultraterrestrials}}: Dinosaurs were [[SufficientlyAdvancedAliens Sufficiently Advanced]] {{Precursors}} that left Earth after achieving utopic existence and traveled the universe uplifting the standard of living for other species.
* {{Utopia}}: The Dinosaurs called the bluff on the Human race wanting more free time and turn the planet into a thriving utopia completely free of all conflict and capitalism. The President, Beth, Summer, and Morty all realize how much it sucks to not have [to pretend] to fix the problems that they cause and grow to hate the constant free time gained with no work to do or nothing better to work for or take credit for.
* VomitIndiscretionShot: Rick sending Morty through a multitude of portals to celebrate fixing the portal network causes Morty to vomit on the floor while in flight.
* WontGetFooledAgain: The dinosaurs casually zap Rick and Morty back to the garage when they tire of Rick. Later on, when Rick joins them on Mars, they try it again but the beam dissipates against a barrier, Rick explaining that he "dino-proofed" his tech just in case.
* YankTheDogsChain: After discovering that the rest of the Smith family have nothing else to do since the dinosaurs arrived, Jerry is inspired to finish his manuscript and have it published. The dinosaurs present the book later and plan to have it distributed across the globe. To Jerry's ire, however, not only are the books being distributed free of charge (as money has been eliminated), but the dinos removed his name from them because they think the author is "above needing credit". The end of the episode has Jerry desperately trying to make a new book, but in his anger all he can do is make a title that specifically references him as the author.
