As Otto is being taken to a doctor's appointment, Simone has sex with Milligan, inadvertently mentioning the doctor's visit. Mike and the Kitchen brothers then eliminate Otto's guards and nurse in the parking lot outside the medical clinic, leaving Otto unharmed.

Meanwhile, Kansas City and the Gerhardt family sit down for negotiations. Floyd, Dodd, and Bear meet with Bulo and propose a counter-offer to his buyout in the form of a partnership. Bulo balks at the idea since Dodd assaulted two of his men earlier. Bulo phones his superiors who reject the Gerhardts' proposal. They now offer two million dollars less than the first offer and demand the Gerhardts' complete surrender.

In Luverne, Hanzee's investigation leads him to find Rye's belt buckle in the Blumquist fireplace. Lou talks to the Blumquists regarding his suspicions that they are involved in Rye's death, but they stubbornly refuse to cooperate. He warns them of the Gerhardts' violent history. At the Gerhardt farm, Floyd tells the family to prepare for war.

!!Tropes:

* AffablyEvil: The meeting between Kansas City and the Gerhardts goes very respectfully (Dodd's outburst aside). Joe Bulo in particular seems to be the most affable.
* AloneWithThePsycho: Sonny has a brief encounter with Hanzee that probably would've ended bloody had Karl not appeared at the last minute.
* AndIMustScream: The whole parking lot sequence where Otto's men are assassinated right in front of him. He clearly knows something bad is going to happen from the start and is helpless to move when the bodies start dropping.
* BeneathNotice: Kellerman thinks it was idiotic for Otto to bring his young son Dodd to the movie theater with him, only for Dodd to be the one to plant the knife in the back of his head.
* BlackComedy: The whole tragic situation with Betsy being signed up for a trial testing the possible effects of a drug and a placebo drug.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Dodd tearfully leans on his mother on the car ride back from their meeting with Kansas City. At first, she isn't having any of it because he undermined her authority, but eventually, she gives in due to the sheer emotional weight of the day.
* {{Flashback}}: The episode begins with Dodd and Otto's 1951 assassination of Kellerman.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: While inspecting the scene at the Waffle Hut, Hanzee seems to get some sort of indication that a flying saucer flew over the scene at some point.
* GoodIsDumb: Sonny sure is well-meaning, but he gives away information about the Blumquists to a clearly shifty intruder before realizing what he's done.
* HeelRealization: It looks like Ed is going to come clean to Lou due to his genuine insistence that he can help, but Peggy interrupts him before anything serious comes out of it.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Peggy seems to think that paying for her Life Spring Seminar is more important than Ed buying the butcher shop and providing them with a financial security upgrade for the foreseeable future.
* LastChanceToQuit:
** Lou stops by Ed and Peggy's house and offers them a chance to come clean about the death of Rye Gerhardt, so he can offer them police protection from Rye's vengeful family. Sadly, they don't listen.
** When Bulo rejects Floyd's counteroffer, he makes clear he's giving her the night to agree to one last offer of a buyout with a reduced payout before warfare.
* MsFanservice: Simone cements herself in this role during this episode, what with her lying in bed completely naked with Mike.
* PsychopathicManchild: Dodd's temper tantrum in front of the Kansas City Mob surely paints their organization in a less stable light. More important is that Joe Bulo provoked it by simply pointing out the flaw in a family crime business: the inability of the family matron/patron to discipline her kids properly.
* SarcasmBlind: Sonny has this problem.
-->'''Sonny:''' He seemed real angry.
-->'''Karl:''' I got that part. Any other Einstein instincts you can share with me?
-->'''Sonny:''' Indian, I think.
* ThisMeansWar: With nowhere else to turn with their offer rejected, Floyd prepares her family for war against the Kansas City Mob.
* ToplessnessFromTheBack: We get to see Simone's bare ass lying in bed, and her exposed back, though her nipples are being covered by her hair.
* WhamLine: From Floyd towards the end of the episode.
-->'''Floyd:''' It's war.
