In Manga/OnePiece, Luffy is gonna be King of the Pirates, but his quest will encounter various memes.
----
* First, of course, ODA NEVER FORGETS. A reference to Oda's extensive use of Chekhovs Guns, often bringing back minor characters from years ago in major roles (Brook for example, whose existence was foreshadowed at the start of the crew's entry into the Grand Line).
* 4Kids! English dub Due to the dub being a massive Macekre, it led quite a few memes.
** YO HO HO HE TOOK A BITE OF GUM GUM! Despite most fans hating the 4Kids! dub of Manga/OnePiece, many did however grudgingly love the pirate rap.
*** "Chopper's doctorin'." A minor meme relating to Chopper's Introdump (short) part in the ThemeTuneRollCall. "Doctoring" is a term referring to the act of forging government documents.
** ZOLO Often labeled as a BlindIdiotTranslation, Zoro's name was changed to Zolo in the 4Kids dub in order to not be ScrewedByTheLawyers. His name was a homage to Franchise/Zorro, which at the time One Piece was initially licensed, was the subject of a copyright lawsuit despite that property having fallen into the PublicDomain years prior. 4Kids and (initially) Toei agreed to change his name rather than risk getting caught in a lawsuit.
** Demon Buggy The 4Kids! dub gave Buggy a VoiceOfTheLegion every time he got upset. Surprisingly, it was well-received. Other antagonists like Wapol received similar treatment.
** Lollipop Sanji The 4Kids! dub edited Sanji's copious cigarette use into him constantly sucking a lollipop (partly to blame on US anti-smoking promotion in cartoons aimed at a very young demographic). It has since become an AscendedMeme following a scene in the Totto Land Arc where a mirror clone of Sanji actually sucked on a lollipop. Further ascended in a cross-promotion with Cup Noodles featuring a HighSchoolAU version of One Piece, and character bios were written up revealing that HS Sanji sucks on a lollipop. Additionally of note is the fact that Smoker's cigars were also edited out, making it look like smoke was constantly pouring loose from his mouth as a side-effect of his Devil Fruit.
** X was sent to a dungeon for the rest of their days. A reference to the infamous moment in the 4Kids! dub where Belle-Mere was not executed by Arlong, but instead sent to a dungeon, with the implication she died, complete with editing the gun out and making it look like he pointed his finger at her to sentence her. It has since been widely mocked and even copied for scenes where this would be absolutely ridiculous, like Ace's execution.
** Green laser guns 4Kids! also poorly censored the guns that characters were carrying by coloring them green and giving them cheesy laser sound effects, in scenes where editing them out was unavoidable. And there are plenty more edits like that where those came from.
** Super Soaker guns Similar to the previous green-colored gun example, the other common 4Kids! gun edit was to just straight up completely edit a gun into a super soaker.
** Helmeppo's hammer gun Another FamilyFriendlyFirearms edit in which 4Kids! redrew the pistol Helmeppo holds against Coby's head as a sort of spring-loaded hammer mounted like a showerhead.
** Don Krieg's Poison Suction Cups Another infamous example of 4Kids! FamilyFriendlyFirearms. Can't have Luffy's body being hit with spikes that make him bleed whenever he pulls the spikes out. Now they're just poison suction cups!
** The Sweat Threat Title of the 4Kids! episode featuring an edit of Luffy's fight against Crocodile where instead of bleeding and using blood to counter his sand, he used his sweat. Not only is that rather Squick gross, but it's not nearly as badass or as feasible as him sweating as copiously as bleeding out from his injuries, and the edits were poorly administered to the fight in general, because when Luffy struck Crocodile hard enough to make him spew blood from the mouth, the edited version, when paused at the right moment, misses a brief frame where the blood reappears.
** Zoro making animal noises. A pair of scenes where Zoro/Zolo randomly starts making animal noises as a way of mocking Usopp and Mr. 1. The corny delivery and incredibly OutOfCharacter behavior made the scenes catch on fast.
** I've known that iceberg ever since it was just a little cube. [=4Kids=] decided to cut Laboon the whale out of the series due to the strong possibility that they viewed it as animal abuse. The result was editing Laboon into the form of an iceberg that the crew fires at to break their way into the Grand Line. This of course would have led to issues way down the line when it's revealed that a baby Laboon played a major role in Brook's backstory. Thus, resulting in a lot of fans cracking jokes that Brook wants to reunite with the "icecube" he knew many years ago.
** "Luffy, it's good to see you buddy... LUFFYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!" A scene from Episode 46 of the [=4Kids=] dub has Zoro[=/=]Zolo greeting Luffy in a rather stilted manner right before letting out a shockingly realistic scream when the latter jumps at him. Once this scene started catching on, it didn't take long for people to joke about [=4Kids=] having to harm Marc Diraison (who voiced Zoro[=/=]Zolo in the 4Kids dub) in someway to get that kind of scream out of him.
--->[=YouTube=] Commenter: They probably had to kill the voice actor's family in front of him to get that level of emotion.
** And then they all died. The very last scene of the [=4Kids=] dub is right when the Skypiea saga's about to start. Their final dubbed episode ends on the Cliffhanger where an ancient pirate ship that fell from Skypiea's about to land on top of the Straw Hats' ship. Thus, it's left some fans joking that the Straw Hats ended up dying in the 4Kids dub. Some even joke that the ancient ship symbolizes Creator/Funimation as the ones dropping in to put an end to the [=4Kids=] dub, and replacing it with their own dub.
* Akagami no Jeki the first Indonesian dub, which aired in 2002-2006, is infamous for accidentally changed Shanks' name to "Jeki" (Indonesian spelling for the name Jacky) in the scene he saved Luffy from the sea monster. Many Indonesian fans found the change Narm narmful and jokingly embrace Jeki as a FanNickname for Shanks.
* Marne the Marine A scene from an early episode in the Loguetown Arc featured a Marine named Mashikaku with an OffModel cap that mistakenly said "Engrish MARNE". In fact, the dub team from Creator/Funimation caught it and decided to jokingly rename the character "Woolseyism Marney the Marine".
* Enel's WildTake Ever since Enel got an entire page to himself to properly display his reaction to Luffy being immune to lightning, the specific face he pulled has occasionally shown up made by other characters, and is generally so fondly remembered as doing/pulling an Enel has become a fan term for either Wild Takes resembling it or generally pulling an epic JawDrop in response to a huge (usually unpleasant) surprise
** Damn Daniel, Ar Ar Ar Ar Ar Ar ArAs of late 2021, it has become popular to pair a clip of FlightReacts saying "Damn Daniel", then laughing with sections of the One Piece anime. The odd imagery (Luffy in a dazed state, then a panel of Enel's famous WildTake face), in sync with the nonsensical audio, has made it quite widespread. People have even begun mixing it into musical tracks in a vein similar to [=YTPMVs=].
* Thanks to the advent of Emporio Ivankov's powers combined with the author drawing Gender Bent versions of the main characters, there has been an absolute deluge of Rule 63 fan art. Absolutely no one is safe.
** Within moments of his anime debut, AMV's to "Sweet Transvestite" were rampant. Given the fact Ivankov is clearly designed off Tim Curry's Frank-N-Furter, this was inevitable.
* Magma is hotter than fire. Swords are hotter than magma. Admiral Akainu killed Portgas D. Ace while proclaiming that his magma burned hotter than Ace's fire. Shanks blocked a magma attack from Akainu using a sword. Justified with the introduction of Haki.
* Fishman Island is the next destination. Eiichiro Oda has continually reassured readers that the Straw Hats would reach Fishman Island after the then-current arc. For context, the Straw Hats started making their way there in the aftermath of Enies Lobby, and they finally reach it after the two-year timeskip. In real-time, it took them four years to reach it, from the initial declaration in Chapter 439 (published December 25, 2006) to their arrival in Chapter 608 (published December 20, 2010).
* SUUUPPAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Franky's hot-blooded catchphrase
* Crying over a fucking boatOne of the most infamous TearJerker moments in the whole series is agreed to be the Merry Go's viking funeral at the end of the Enies Lobby arc. Cue dozens of fans tearfully joking about or questioning the fact that they developed emotional attatchment to a ship of all things.
* Nobody dies in Manga/OnePiece outside of Flashbacks! At least before the Wham Episodes, this fact is frequently brought up in One Piece discussions. . Even flashbacks sometimes aren't enough to kill someone, as can attest. The death of caused this meme to have a resurgence, as the character was KilledOffscreen and then the story jumped back to their death, meaning even characters killed in the story's present can only die in flashbacks.
* WE ALL LIVE IN A YELLOW SUBMARINE Trafalgar Law's ship, the Polar Tang, is a yellow submarine
* "Will Luffy survive?!" or even, "Will X survive?!" One of the Post-Marineford chapter ending notes in the original manga asked this question. During Luffy's flashback.
* X is Sabo. Sabo was apparently killed off by a cannon on a Celestial Dragon ship. While this happens in a flashback and after the point where "No one dies in One Piece" has been disproven, some suggest he is not actually dead. .
* X for Straw Hats. Any potentially candidate who could or would join the crew
** Carrot For Nakama. A phrase that rapidly arose over the course of the Whole Cake Island Arc, with many speculating to Carrot being made an official member of the crew due her general lovability, chemistry with the crew and . By the time Wano began, the phrase was ingrained that any discussion on her inevitably went back to it, even when Carrot began to lose focus as the arc went on.
** Kiku is the next Straw Hat. In Episode 925, when they adapted the part where Sanji says he can use the Raid Suit to protect his friends (after a VerbalBackspace about bathhouses), it shows the crew and some others in the background with the women given major focus. This includes Carrot and for some reason Kiku. This lead to people joking that Kiku will be the next member of the crew.
** Luffy talked to her, that means she's the next crewmember! Fans have been champing at the bit for a third woman in the Straw Hats (with the current makeup being 8 men and 2 women) that any time Luffy interacts with a woman, fans clamor for her to be the next Straw Hat. This has included Marguerite in Amazon Lily, Shirahoshi in Fishman Island, Monet in Punk Hazard, and of course Carrot and Yamato.
* Meadows. An extremely minor character from the TournamentArc who went memetic at Arlong Park Forums due to a WMG that went horribly wrong. He was a character with a unique design and very little story emphasis, so the forum-goers decided he must be a ChekhovsGunman and voted him the winner of his block in the tournament. As it turns out, the much more important character Rebecca won, and Meadows had no plot relevance whatsoever, and so his name became a byword for a stupid fan theory.
* "Feel the pain of Sabo and Issho's victory!" A horrendously bad translation from Chapter 761 that invokes Duwang and other notable Blind Idiot Translations. For the record, the line is meant to say "Sabo and Issho's fight ended in a tie"
** "What the hell?" The very fitting response
** "The fact is I don't understand it" from the same chapter
** "Maynard The Marine / Admiral Maynard" A fumble with grammar on both counts. The chapter in question was supposed to say "and the Marines", but left out the "and" as well as the "s", making Maynard seem like a OneManArmy who was the Marine. Later, another error made it seem like Maynard was one of the Admirals, leaving out "Vice" in "Vice Admiral". Ironically, the translation screw-ups made Maynard into a MemeticBadass overnight.
** "You'll be queen, you know?" Another bad translation, this one making it seem as though King Riku is telling his granddaughter she'll be his queen. The correct translation is that she would be a princess.
** "I just wanna crucify and chill!" This time from Mangastream, when taking liberties goes wrong. Of note is that the original reading they went with was "I just wanna crucifix and chill!" (you can tell when Mangastream revises a page because there will be a number or version number added to the page number in the file name that goes up with each successive revision, ex: 01.png becomes 011.png or [=01v2.png=] and so forth), which was a clear play on the phrase "Creator/Netflix and chill", but then someone pointed out that grammatically makes no sense at all, changing it to its other version and completely losing the joke in the process.
* "When's Robin going to get her fight?" Due to her Hana Hana abilities verging on StoryBreakerPower, Robin has constantly been shoved aside to avoid getting into an actual one-on-one fight. This has lead to many fans demanding when she'll get a fight. Come Wano, she finally got a proper fight, and against one of Kaido's strongest fighters no less.
* "I don't like bread!"Originally said by Trafalgar Law in Chapter 700 in a NotSoAboveItAll moment, and later reaffirmed in an SBS and even a chapter's cover art. The number of joke pictures, memes, and gifs involving Law and bread is staggering.
* "Who?" The response to every mention of Sanji since he's been PutOnABus
** 2016 is the Year of Lu-Sanji! Oda's editor at Jump Festa 2015 stated that 2016 will be all about Sanji after being OutOfFocus for so long. Fans were quick to compare it to Nintendo's "Year of Luigi".
** Year of Sanji-Suffering. 2016 wound up being a massive TraumaCongaLine for Sanji.
** 2017 is the Year of Brook! During the first 4 months of 2017 Brook preformed a series of extremely well received feats, to the point where he was frequently referred to as the MVP of the Whole Cake Island arc
* ZEHAHAHAHA! Teach's signature laugh, has become a catchall for One Piece trolling and shitposting on /a/
** ZEHAHA STOPS. An uncanny but hilarious pic of Teach which has been the frequent response to anything cringeworthy or any form of FanDisservice
* A hero is someone who shares X. I want all the X for myself!Luffy and Zoro's independently similar definition of what a hero is from the Fishman Island arc, with Luffy talking about meat and Zoro talking about alcohol. Often used for one of the other Straw Hats, such as ladies for Sanji, cotton candy for Chopper, etc.
* X is a D "D" is a sign of Badassery in-universe and out. It didn't take long for any memorable badasses to be labeled "D" by the fandom. Of course it's become so prevalent that it's now a running joke to label any character with a "D" in their name as one.
** Ma D. Monk After TheReveal in Chapter 837 of Urouge defeating one of Big Mom's pirate commanders, the One Piece fandom exploded with memes hyping up his strength tremendously and earning him the nickname "Ma D. Monk".
** Go D. Usopp In a similar vein to Ma D. Monk, Usopp's frequent tendency to lie and then have that lie come true, has spawned a meme that states that ALL of Usopp's lies are true and/or will be true, resulting in fans making both joke and serious theories about Usopp having extremely powerful Future Vision Observation Haki that he doesn't have full control over, treating him as a prophet. Volume 107 having a picture of Usopp as Nika in Usopp's Gallery only added fuel to the fire.
** Buggy D. Clown Buggy's FakeUltimateHero status lead the fams to ironically play him up as a MemeticBadass, and his name (at least in English) easily turns into D.
** Con D. Oriano Condoriano is the fake name that Usopp gave to Marine Commander Shepherd in the anime-only G-8 arc. Frequently memed as the trump card of the Straw Hats and one of the most powerful people in the world.
** Down D. Stairs Kuina died from falling down the stairs, which has often been made fun of due to how ridiculously mundane and off-beat it is in a series where nearly everyone who dies does so in a DyingMomentOfAwesome. Therefore, it's become a joke among many fans that the stairs were actually an incredibly powerful combatant. This also resulted in Page One being played up as a MemeticBadass since he was introduced being pushed down the stairs by Ulti and surviving
** Took D. Arm A name given to the Sea Monster that ate Shanks's arm in Chapter 1. Considering how powerful Shanks is, many readers found it odd that Shanks had to sacrifice his arm to save Luffy from it. This led to jokes about it being some kind of super-powerful monster.
** Ask D. Question An anime-exclusive unnamed BitCharacter who asked Roger about the location of his treasure just seconds before the latter was executed, starting the entire series.
** Beppo D. Bear In chapter 1081, Beppo comes in clutch by using some kind of medicine Chopper gave him to assume his Sulong Form without a full moon. With this power, he manages to fight off Blackbeard and save Law. Not bad for a character who, up until this point, had largely been treated as a JokeCharacter.
** Took D. Photo Attach or Atta-chan is the photographer for the World Government, responsible for taking photos for pirates' wanted posters. Despite being a relatively old man that pretty much can't fight his way out of a paper bag, he has taken the pictures of every single pirate with a wanted poster and lived to tell the tale, and has followed the Straw Hats since at least Syrup Village and has never been seen by any of them (except for Nami, who he told the picture was going to be for a magazine cover).
* Doflamingo's eyes Jokes and fan art made about how Doflamingo's eyes are never seen behind his signature sunglasses (with the exception of one brief moment in the past after he snaps awake from a nightmare) abounded when fans wondered what would happen if they got knocked off his face. When the glasses finally got broken, they were never shown, and when imprisoned, Doflamingo had a replacement set on. Later got to the point where when fans asked Oda to draw Doflamingo with his glasses off, he deliberately and gleefully trolled them by having his hand over his face when a flamingo borrowed them, and then showed Doflamingo wearing a smaller pair of sunglasses underneath the first pair, a la Kakashi Hatake's mask.
* [=#MammothBoyz=] A hashtag started by Website/YouTube anime reviewer Roger [=DiLuigi=] (AKA [=RogersBase=]) that he began using as soon as Jack debuted and turned out to have a Devil Fruit that turns him into a mammoth and he began wrecking up Zou in tremendously powerful fashion. It still stands as the name of his fanbase.
* 1 billion Berries Jack's bounty, revealed in Chapter 809. It was the first to jump into the billions, and completely redefined what people theorized the Four Emperors' bounties were, believing them to be the billion-berry tier alone.
* Bad Luck Katakuri Greentext During Sanji and Pudding's wedding, Katakuri seems to be failing because no one is lending a single hand to help him; Perospero ignores his advice to hurry up and kill the Vinsmokes and fellow Sweet Commander Smoothie just stands around and shouts for someone to do something. On /a/ people were quick to make greentexts sympathizing with Katakuri's constant failures due to the rest of his family's baffling incompetence and inaction, and it picked up to the point that a subreddit devoted to the meme soon followed.
* BIG NEWS! The catchphrase of Morgans (no, not the Marine Captain Morgan), the president of the World Economic Times and one of the emperors of the world's Underworld. It's even his epithet in-universe. He exclaims this every time he witnesses something very newsworthy regardless of situation. This caught on with some fans as they say it in relation to any plot relevant suprise or twist in a joking manner.
* Crazy Big Bitch/Psycho Big Bitch A popular nickname for Big Mom that was coined by Website/YouTube anime reviewer Christopher Kol (AKA The King of Lightning).
* ONE PIECE WILL BE/IS ON BREAK NEXT WEEK.The author of One Piece takes a break about every three weeks (once per month or so) after a scare with his health. Every time the break comes up, you're sure to hear people groaning about it because it means the manga won't update for around another 14 days, which can grow even longer if the author times his break around the holidays.
* Goda A Portmanteau of "God Oda", an AffectionateNickname for the author because of how amazing he consistently gets with the major twists and turns of One Piece.
** "Another crazy chapter. Peak fiction" "Wait till.. you see.. what I'm cooking next" An edit of the last panel of Chapter 1073 with Jaygarcia Saturn's face being replaced by Oda's. Commonly used as a reaction image in response to a moment that the fanbase perceives as awesome.
* X is Yonko level/X is Admiral level Common catch-all phrase used to describe the threat level of certain characters in the series who are especially dangerous, usually prefaced by a debatable statement that Luffy/one or more of his crewmates/one or more of his allies is now able to go head-to-head with a Yonko or Admiral/Fleet Admiral (generally regarded as the top tier threats) by proxy if they beat said character.
* Monkey DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!/the D Another one brought to you by [=KingOfLightning=], who loves to draw out the "D" in any character with that initial in their name, usually slapping a giant golden "D" on the screen with some badass image of the character inside when they do something epic. It also exists as a derivative of another meme, "Give her the D[ick]", which has sexual connotations.
* WEEEEEEEEEED! Due to an unfortunate circumstances with the lettering, Big Mom's MadnessMantra of "WEDDING CAKE" given in the climax of the Whole Cake Island Arc is almost always rendered with "WEEEEED!" in a single speech bubble. Cue the obvious drug jokes.
* There's nothing you can do that I can't. No exceptions. During their battle, Charlotte Katakuri shows off the powers of the Mochi Mochi no mi, which happen to be very similar to Luffy's own. He mimics his every attack and even shows that he's better at using Luffy's own techniques, causing him to quip the aforementioned line. (Well, most of it. The "no exceptions" is actually an original part of the meme and a case of BeamMeUpScotty) Within hours, the fandom started photoshopping together pictures of Katakuri using Luffy's techniques (such as Gear 4th or "Baka" Luffy) and saying his catchphrase. There's also many "I'm you, but X" jokes floating around.
* "One Piece characters skip Leg Day." Comment making fun of Oda's preferred style of making most of his male musclebound characters top-heavy (though with some, it's the other way around).
* "I can't believe Oda just killed off Luffy!" When chapter 900 turned out to not be a MilestoneCelebration so much as one of the series's most shocking Wham Episodes with the apparent destruction of the Thousand Sunny jokes concerning Luffy and his companions in the Sanji Retrieval Team being KilledOffForReal started flying fast and furious along with debates over who would inherit the mantle of main protagonist including Zoro, Buggy, Katakuri, and more. The timing of the chapter's release being right around April Fools' didn't hurt, either.
** During the following break, a fan decided to make a fake Chapter 901 for April Fool's Day where [[spoiler:King Baum comes back and starts beating the crap out of Big Mom's fleet, Pound AND Pedro have inexplicably survived to come back and kick ass, Judge is revealed to be "TOP 5" in the One Piece world (a troll for all those online discussions about who is the most powerful character) and Commander Shepherd AKA "Condoriano" from the anime-only G8 Arc appears as an UnexpectedCharacter at the end and a CanonImmigrant]]. Basically, a gleefully audience-trolling CrackFic on steroids put together with drawing and clever panel splicing and editing from past chapters. Riding the coattails of this, it quickly spawned its own memehood. Especially "TOP FIVE", which got its own T-shirt mere days after the joke chapter became a viral sensation.
* One Piece Chapter 999 Not an actual canon chapter, mind you, but a fan-made envisioning of what an epic FinalBattle between the Straw Hat Pirates and allies and Marines and Mariejois would be, basically dick-teasing ALL the things Oda is leading up to and trying to visualize them. It even includes one of the infamous "One Piece will be on break next week" announcements. The actual Chapter 999 would be completely unrecognizable from this fanmade chapter, and the break that followed would be for the holidays.
* Spee D. Reader A play on the Will of D and a disparaging nickname for people that complain about aspects that have been shown or explained, leading to the belief that they're rushing through the chapters or "speed-reading".
** "Okay Kizaru" The next evolution of "Speed Reader", referring to a poster that misses details as Kizaru due him being fast & air-headed.
* Zoro's infamous NoSenseOfDirection is a goldmine for meme images, ranging from him being found on Mars to him ending up in other series entirely.
** Becomes an AscendedMeme for the latter in a promo for Jump Exhibition specials, where he landed in the world of Manga/Gintama of all places. To complete the joke, he even meets Hijikata Toushirou, another character that Creator/KazuyaNakai is best known for. A double hilarious case of ActorAllusion and ActingForTwo!
** A common joke is that Zoro actually has a built-in compass always aiming at the location of the One Piece and if the Straw Hats followed Zoro's seemingly terrible directions they'd find the treasure immediately.
* Luffy's bounty decreased! Following Whole Cake Island, Luffy missed a 0 while calculating his bounty, which meant he thought his bounty fell to 150 million Berries, instead of this true bounty, 1.5 billion. People started taking this as face value, and appropriately made Luffy a stealth Ninja who can go anywhere without detection, jokingly even to Laugh Tale by being under radar. Also, memes of Zoro/Sanji (or even God Usopp) being the new captains started cropping up.
* 80% Oda in an interview around the start of Wano (July 2018) mentioned the story being roughly 80% done. Cue legions of fans either upset at how close they were to the finish line, or baffled as to how all the story content remaining (Including virtually all of Wano, Luffy's reunion with Shanks, the visit to Elbaf, the answers to the series central mysteries and the heavily foreshadowed FinalBattle) would be able to fit into the remaining 20%. Possibly a case of TrollingCreator, as Oda has done many times, but you never know.
* Oda prefers Nami over Robin. In the Chapter 911 cover spread Robin is way off in the background while Nami is the main Fanservice. Cue fans already used to Robin being sidelined to accuse Oda of favouritism. With some saying we should've expected this since Oda's wife is a Nami cosplayer.
* Batman. The name of one of the Gifters in Wano. Cue a slew of the obvious jokes.
* Wano Samurai Jack. Chapter 919 revealed (further confirmed in 920) that Momonosuke, Kinemon, Kanjuro, Raizo, and Kiku were all sent forward 20 years in time from the past. Comparisons to WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack flooded out, including altering the iconic opening narration to the view of Kaido or Shogun Orochi.
* Kaido comparisons to Shenron exploded when his Devil Fruit power was revealed and another one of Oda's loving homages to Dragon Ball took place.
* Kaido the One Punch Man. Just like any other One Punch Man villain, Luffy gave his all to defeat Kaido, with him even seemingly gaining the upper hand. Kaido is unfazed as if he just was chilling in the breeze, and smashes Luffy out cold in his Gear 4 state in one hit.
* Poor Law and his plans. After Luffy went against Law's advice and got his ass kicked mercilessly by Kaido, memes began cropping up regarding Luffy's LeeroyJenkins tendencies and the troubles he faces later. Most of the posts show solidarity to Law for putting up with an IdiotHero who doesn't listen to his carefully made plans and acknowledging his status as a Determinator who won't stop being TheStrategist.
* Ugly Robin. Robin after seeing the news that Luffy was captured has a ridiculous OhCrap ReactionShot where she gets a double chin. People were angry Oda made Robin look so hideous as they think he would not have had Nami make that face... until he did just that in an SBS at the request of a fan, alongside Sanji, Chopper and Brook.
* Wanopark. X-Drake, Page One, King and Queen all have Dinosaur Zoan Devil Fruits.
* Black Ranger. Sanji in his Stealth Black Raid Suit is reminiscent of Sentai Black.
* Where's Jinbe? The fandom's reaction whenever Jinbe is excluded from art of the Straw Hats after joining.
* Ripped Luffy. Luffy is shown in Chapter 928 with a conspicuously more muscular physique than normal. Fans had a field day with this.
* Zoro fainting from one attack. People either had incredulous or amused reactions when Zoro the page image for MadeOfIron fainted after getting stabbed in shoulder by Kamazo. Since other characters and Zoro himself have endured more grievous wounds in the past.
* When Kurozumi Orochi's rather goofy appearance was revealed, people started joking that Wario ruled over Wano Country.
* Toko has two daddies. Zoro and Sanji -- already a target for Yaoi fangirls -- are seen looking after a little girl together when they reunite for first time since Dressrosa and, of course, start bickering like old married couple. Cue a bunch of Squee and FanArt.
* More training for Luffy in Udon. Oda infamously cut away from Zoro, Sanji and Law having their respective battles against the Beast Pirates to focus on Luffy while he was imprisoned in Udon for five chapters. Fans were a bit upset.
* Kiku's gender. Kiku's QueerEstablishingMoment caused a variety of reactions, some respectful, others less so.
** Yamato's gender. Similar to Kiku, Yamato's gender has caused quite a bit of discourse. Unlike Kiku, whom both the manga and Vivre Card explicitly say is "a woman at heart" (a Japanese term for transwomen), it repeatedly flares up due to a perceived inconsistency in how Yamato's gender is portrayed. On the one hand, Kaido refers to Yamato as his "son," and Yamato refuses to go into the woman's baths because it would be "improper" and instead goes into the men's baths. On the other hand, Yamato's Vivre Card lists Yamato's gender as "female", his introduction card lists him as "Kaido's daughter", and in chapter 1084, Oda included Yamato in a color spread of all the One Piece female characters (and only the female characters) playing in the ocean. It's gotten to the point that some people are sick of all the discourse because it's overshadowing not just Yamato as a character, but the major plot and the reveals that are now occurring in the Final Saga.
** Crocodile's gender. Some theorize that Crocodile is actually a trans man or a woman who was changed into a male by Ivankov due to an interaction they had in Impel Down. The reveal of his Seraphim in Chapter 1068 caused the theory to resurface as readers thought the Seraphim looked androgynous. Others moved this into crack theory territory by postulating that Crocodile mothered Luffy before changing sexes. To this day, it's one of the most popular fan theories, due to how absurd it is.
* RIP Anime Only The 22nd opening "Over the Top" spoils several key story notes from the Wano arc. Manga readers have noticed how spoiler heavy it is compared to past openings.
* Kaido doesn't want to pay child support. Kaido and Big Mom were revealed to have been former crewmates, and Big Mom insists that Kaido owes her a debt. When he tries to deny it by saying "That was a long time ago", she insists "No, it's a life debt!" He then completely freaks out when she shows up to his country like she said she was going to, and insists that his subordinates get rid of her before she reaches the shores of Wano. Given Big Mom's ReallyGetsAround reputation, fans have joked that, while they were on the same crew, Kaido became one of the many fathers of some of BM's many children (specifically Katakuri and his brothers Oven and Daifuku), and is now trying to get out of child support payments that she's come to collect. This would later be disproven when it's revealed that Linlin views Kaido as her little brother and that the debt in question was saving his life after the God Valley incident.
* Act 2 broke the internet. With the release of Chapter 955, Wano Act 2's finale, the internet seemed to go crazy over it. With Hot Topic tweeting about it and Polygon writing an article about it. Made even worse when Toei Animation retweeted someone talking about it, a day before the official release.
* The Mera Mera Fruit is cursed. In Chapter 956, news as yet disclosed to the reader regarding Sabo at Reverie is in the paper. People were speculating Sabo may have been captured or worse just like Ace. Chpater 1054 eventually revealed that .
* Chapter 956: BIG NEWS! The WhamEpisode that was Chapter 956 was so massive that memes were made and released even before the official chapter was published. So much that [=#OnePiece956=] was trending worldwide on anime channels.
** When the full view of the Marine Headquarters is shown, some fans cannot un-see how the Marine symbol at the back resembles the logo of UsefulNotes/McDonalds due to being unable to see the spanner at the bottom.
* Oden has fullbody Haki for 20 years. Kozuki Oden has only been show in silhouette for many chapters leading some to joke that covers himself in Armament Haki all the time.
* Robin is Mike Wazowski. Due to the way Creator/VizMedia formats the covers of collected volumes, Robin's face on Volumes 91 & 92 ended up getting covered by a big number. Leading to jokes and comparisons to Mike Wazowski's similar coverage in Monsters Inc..
* Chapter 967 was leaked online several days ahead of time and contained some juicy half-revelations, but it came at a time the two most known english scanlation groups went under due to threats from the series' publisher. As a result of this, a more amateurish translation was spread around in various languages that contained a made-up line regarding Buggy getting sick before the Roger Pirates went to the final island. It said he had "I'll die if I go to that island disease" (a call-back to something Usopp said once), when he just caught a fever and was really insisting to go despite his condition. Much laughter was had over all the people worldwide who fell for this tale.
* He laughed / Roger just laughed. The end of Chapter 967 provides a full page of Roger laughing as he views Joy Boy's great treasure (presumably the One Piece). The scene instantly went memetic.
** He didn't laugh. A photoshopped version of said page which provides Roger cringing. The edit is most commonly a response to anything cringeworthy.
* X is the traitor. The Wano Arc has implied that there is a traitor in Luffy's allies against Kaido later in the arc. As a result, may people have been making theories of who it could be such as Kanjuro, Carrot, & even Law. Some people even make obvious impossible theories on who could be the traitor such as saying Luffy is. Cropped up again in the Egghead arc, when mysterious acts of sabotage, the Seraphim refusing to obey orders, and finally Dr Vegapunk's disappearance left a new round of speculation as to traitors. Chapter 1078 reveals that .
* The Will of P. A play on the Will of D, this refers to various characters that seemingly died only to turn out to be alive, and they all have names that start with P. Pell, Pagaya, Paulie, and now Pound. Fans joke that the Will of P is the only thing greater than the Will of D.
* Wick! Kaido's AlcoholHic in the anime has caught on with fans for the amusing emphasis.
* Luffy and Yamato share a braincell. After the two meet, Luffy and Yamato act very similarly at times, including having identical reactions to Kaido's speech about finding the One Piece. Cue the fanbase joking that they only have a single braincell between them.
* Team Yamato VS Team Carrot. After OP Magazine Vol 10 confirmed that, after years of debate, there still was one last member of the Straw Hats yet to join, the fandom exploded in debate on who it could be, with Yamato and Carrot being far and away the most popular picks. The debate was big enough that it ended up trending. [[spoiler:Chapter 1016 swings the ball into Yamato's court, as he declares his intention to join the Straw Hats after Kaido falls, and Chapter 1051 reaffirms this by having Yamato explicitly state to the crew that he'll be joining them... only to then swing in the opposite direction by having Yamato outright decline joining so they can protect Wano, but may join in the future. Meanwhile, Carrot is convinced by Cat Viper and Dogstorm to become the new ruler of the Minks when they decide to stay in Wano, presumably killing any hope of her joining as well. In the end, nobody won.]]
** Caribou won. After Wano [[spoiler:neither Carrot nor Yamato joined the crew in spite of all of the discourse surrounding them. Caribou, however, ends up tagging along by getting stuffed into a barrel. Given that he had already become something of a meme by this point, many fans have started jokingly calling him the last Strawhat]].
* Guess what? Chicken butt! Beast Pirates Headliner Fourtricks ate a Chicken SMILE fruit that shapes into a giant chicken with his face sticking out the chicken's butt. Fans were quick to revive this oldschool playground retort when bringing him up.
* Koido Chapter 999 revealed that Kaido actually ate the legendary model of the Fish-Fish Fruit despite his ability to turn into a dragon. This led to people redubbing Kaido as "Koido" as well as a multitude of fanart of Kaido as a fish or Magikarp, in reference to the old Japanese folktale of the LegendaryCarp that managed to climb a waterfall and turn into a dragon
* JAAAACK Kaido is often jokingly depicted as having a relationship with Jack that reminds one of Super Kami Guru and Nail, but instead of abusive, it's far, far too supportive
* Never bet on Jack.In reference to Kaido's introduction (in which the narrator famously says "In a one-on-one fight, always bet on Kaido."), and Jack losing most of his fights despite being very strong. Though in fairness, very few of Jack's fights have been one-on-one, and instead he usually fights multiple strong opponents by himself.
* Bandaged Up Cross Zoro When Law leaves a heavily injured Zoro with Sanji instead of one of the many other doctors they have on Wano, Sanji completely wraps him in bandages with his arms out in a T-pose. Along with comparisons to Wolfwood from Trigun, people started editing Zoro into other scenes.
** Sword man Jokes about Zoro becoming a sword, especially given that Mihawk's Yoru is a legendary sword with a cross hilt, accompanied the above meme. Some jokes include the fact that when he said he's the world's best swordsman, he meant world's best sword-man, or that he's in the situation he put Sogeking in.
* Racist Who's Who In Chapter 1018, Who's Who made racist comments about Fishmen towards Jinbe. Including saying his ability to fight on land is good "for a Fishman" then asking him about Sun God Nika because he was part of the Sun Pirates and would "know about that". Fans noted how realistic his comments were and started making all kinds of jokes, while also noting that Who's Who was a Cipher Pol agent for the World Government (which is compared to a cop, though a CIA agent would be a more apt comparison).
* Triceratops are a different breed In a fan translation of Chapter 1019, which sticks for 2 days before the official, Franky questions how Sasaki is able to fly using his frills, receiving the reply of "Triceratops are a different breed of Dinosaur". Some fans quickly compared it to the "I'm built different" meme.
* The Will of K. A play on the Will of D like the aforementioned "Will of P" meme, referring to characters in Wano who survived fatal attacks with their names starting with K: Kin'emon, Kiku, and Kanjuro. Along with rampant speculation about whether survived after .
* Zoro is a racist/Zoro the Minority Hunter.Originating from a post as a parody of far-reaching fan speculations noting that a surprising number of Zoro's opponents were either dark-skinned or AmbiguouslyBrown. Hence the jokes about Zoro getting a powerup when he fights minorities or him refusing to fight white people. This reached a fever pitch after the release of the live-action adaptation, where Zoro's first scene is killing Mr. 7 -- who is played by a black actor. It was also joked Zoro won against Kaku in Enies Lobby and Lucci in Egghead because giraffes and leopards, respectively, are from Africa.
* Offscreen Offscreen No mi/Offscreen Haki Due to the fact that a lot of Blackbeard's awesome moments happen offscreen and onscreen he's unfortunate enough to get paired up with a powerhouse. Many fans started joking that Blackbeard is an InvincibleVillain as long as he's offscreen.
* Queen is reading ahead in the manga/Queen knows Manga spoilers. Queen casually dropping significant reveals during his fight with Sanji (like the fact that was a colleague of Dr. Vegapunk, and that King is actually ) has led to many jokes that Queen is actually a content leaker who's reading ahead in the story.
* The end of 2021 saw a [=TikTok=] meme surface that used the anime's classic eyecatch jingles. First showing something good with Luffy's jingle, then cutting to something bad about it with Zoro's jingle, but quickly cuts off after the first few notes.
* Who the hell is Carrot?Due to Carrot's increasing OutOfFocus status in the Wano arc, fans have taken to joking that they don't know who she is.
** Oda's revenge. Some fans took it farther and claimed the increase in Carrot's lack of focus (and having Nekomamushi be the one to take down Perospero instead of her) is Oda's response to her high placement in the Worldwide Popularity Poll (8th, beating out major favorites like Ace and Sabo).
* Wano Act 3 End.By December of 2021, many fans were getting tired of waiting for the end of Act 3 and the Wano Country arc, to the point where some have even joked that the arc will only end when One Piece itself does.
* During 2021, similar to the eyecatch memes on [=TikTok=], another meme arose featuring wanted posters of the characters set to the Wellerman Song. The deeper parts of the song would be used for bigger pirates, while the female part is always used for the female characters.
* Raizo vs. Fukurokuju As Act Three of Wano raged on and several major fights ended, up to and including Zoro and Sanji's fights with King and Queen respectively, the very fact that this comparably minor fight was still ongoing boggled many minds. This led to jokes that Raizo vs. Fukurokuju was the real main event of Wano and not Luffy vs. Kaido, usually accompanied by various references to Manga/Naruto. A side meme to this is claiming that Raizo and Fukurokuju are actually fighting in every panel, but they're too well hidden for us to see them because they're ninjas. The battle finally concluded in Chapter 1041, was defeated by . is the winner, for the curious.
* This is how X hunted in ancient times! King's explanation as to why he can stretch back his beak to fire projectiles in his Zoan form. Alterations explaining all manner of Zoan peculiarities from Sasaki's spinning triceratops blades to Kaku's Pasta Machine technique, as well as many other One Piece oddities, soon followed.
* Whitebeard is a Toretto IJustWantToHaveFriends at heart Whitebeard's raison d'etre for going out to the sea was to have his own family, and when he got his own crew, he considers them his "sons and daughters" with them addressing him as "Oyaji" (an informal Japanese word of father. Usually translated as "Pops" or "Old Man" for the English equivalent). And while the family meme of Film/TheFastAndTheFurious has been around for a time, it became popular again with the release of Film/F9. Fans quickly noticed and comparisons between Whitebeard and Dominic Toretto followed.
* Gorm A theory posted on the r/[=OnePiece=] subreddit that predicted the future makeup of the Straw Hats based on the makeup of Chapter 861's cover page. Beyond its EpilepticTrees nature, the most notable part of the theory was the inclusion of a character called "Gorm" who was a placeholder name for a Giant from Elbaf who could turn himself into a chipmunk. However, he is only described about halfway through the post and casual references to him are made a lot before that, leading to both jokes and confusion about when Gorm was introduced.
* One Piece is a serious manga. After , his fight with Kaido became something out of a WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes episode. While many fans greatly enjoyed Luffy's antics, some claimed that they were too silly and ToonPhysics had no place in a manga like One Piece. This resulted in several fans sarcastically claiming that One Piece has always been a very serious series, while posting screencaps of things like Luffy leaking after drinking too much water, Luffy using Arlong's teeth as dentures, and Luffy growing immensely fat by eating Cracker's Biscuit Soldiers.
* "Don't talk to me about your dreams!"/The Superior Shonen Protagonist.During the climax of his fight against Kaido, Luffy explicitly declares he doesn't care about Kaido and his dreams, citing how said dreams forced an entire country to suffer. Some fans who dislike EasilyForgiven villains have used this statement as "proof" that Luffy is a better protagonist than other shonen protagonists, particularly Naruto who is infamous for forgiving his villains.
* The Deadbeat Pirates After the trailer for Anime/OnePieceFilmRed came out, many have joked that the entire crew of the Red Hair Pirates is made up of deadbeat dads, as the only members with backstories (Shanks and Yasopp) are both Disappeared Dads.
* Racist Shanks A popular joke on sites like 4chan is that Shanks is in fact a racist due to the fact that his crew consists entirely of human men.
* Don't worry, Kaido has another move in his arsenal Fans have complained how Kaido went down like a chump once Luffy activated Gear 5 (down to Luffy using a MegatonPunch) not unlike Doflamingo's defeat in Dressrosa Arc, hoping that Kaido still has more to show regarding his skillset to counter this.
* I look just like my biological father, Kozuki Oden! A fake leak that portrayed Momonosuke's adult form as being identical to Whitebeard, despite Momo's insistence he looks exactly like Oden. Gained steam after Momo's real adult form was revealed, mostly regarding jokes claiming that the real design is a forgery, and that the fake is the real thing.
* r/chopperpiece A subreddit that was dedicated to Chopper, Rule34 but not in a way most people would consider kosher. Due to its seemingly innocuous title, people on Reddit used it as SchmuckBait by saying things like "r/chopperpiece has some amazing artwork of Chopper, you should check it out!" However, the subreddit seems to have been banned as of early 2022.
* X is more iconic than Red Roc. After Luffy first used the Red Roc attack in the anime, a Twitter user posted a tweet in which they claimed that Luffy's Red Roc attack was now more iconic than Goku's Kamehameha. The tweet quickly went viral, with people posting responses of anime Signature Attacks as well as various things that were more iconic and well-known than Luffy's Red Roc.
* Charcoal was meant to BURN!"Kurozumi", the name of Orochi's clan, means "charcoal". One of the major themes of the Wano Arc is that the persecution of the Kurozumi clan by supporters of the Kozuki was directly responsible for everything wrong that's currently happening in Wano. One of the last things shown in the arc is a government-sponsored play where this is the closing line, implying that the Kozuki clan is about to start the whole thing over again. Needless to say, fans have had... interesting reactions to this line. Especially after it's revealed that Tama (one of the key allies of the Straw Hats in overthrowing Kaido) is herself a Kurozumi.
* Cock Piece/"THE ONE PIECE... IS REAL!"/"CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER?" A trend of depicting edits of One Piece characters, primarily Whitebeard, flashing Gag Penises, with versions with Whitebeard often topped off with his line from the dub saying the One Piece is real. Videos that BaitAndSwitch a viewer by suddenly cutting to one such edit are also typically accompanied by Kanye West's "Dark Fantasy", which plays when the video cuts to the edit. The meme further spread to Twitter as a call-and-response meme, where proclamations of "CAN WE GET MUCH HIGHER?" (a line from "Dark Fantasy" that interpolates Music/MikeOldfield's "In High Places") are met with "SO HIGH" and/or "THE ONE PIECE IS REAL," typically in all-caps. Eventually, several pictures in particular (namely Whitebeard standing, Chopper crying, Law sitting down with his fingers intertwined, and Luffy and Ace shaking hands) became associated with the meme enough that posting their unedited pictures alone was enough for people to catch its meaning. It's also common practice for these aforementioned images to be redrawn, edited, or parodied.
** Crying Chopper Also associated with the "Cock Piece" meme is a still of a crying Chopper from the movie Anime/EpisodeOfChopperPlusBloomInTheWinterMiracleSakura, which is the most subject to redraws and parodies.
* "I WANT TO LIVE!!"The legendary moment where Robin discovers a reason to live during the Enies Lobby arc, particularly the moment where she tearfully cries out the above quote, became synonymous with tweets describing people going through supposedly life-changing events, ranging from relatively basic, to outright bizarre.
* THAT thing A meme parodying Oda's increasing use of Unreveals to hide certain significant plot points, usually by having the characters simply refer to things without naming them by simply talking about "That [x]", most egregiously in Chapter 1060, "Luffy's Dream", which does not reveal what Luffy's dream is, instead only showing the Straw Hats' reaction to Luffy, who told them about it off-panel. People have ran with it and used it to show how absurd it is by inserting it into older scenes (ie: The straw hats revealing their goals at the start of the Grand Line by all just saying "I'll do THAT thing!")
* The "Fat Nami" Incident At the start of 2023, Creator/Toonami made the decision to bring back their fan-art showcase segments. However, it only ended up lasting two segments before being canned when viewers were suddenly blindsided by not only fat fetish art of Nami, but stolen fat fetish art of Nami. The outcry of shock from viewers as well as the revelation that the art was stolen from an artist's subscription page lead to the reel being taken down and Toonami's fanart showcases to once again end.
* Lucci is a SoreLoser After meeting Luffy again for the first time since Enies Lobby, Lucci immediately attacks him even though Stussy specifically warns him that they need permission to fight an Emperor. Lucci finds himself on the wrong end of a CurbStompBattle but still chases after Luffy the moment he wakes up, insisting he "doesn't acknowledge Straw Hat as an Emperor". Many fans quickly started mocking him, stating he was in denial or that Lucci would still be trying to fight Luffy again even when he's actively dying from losing the previous fight. Luffy even tries to weaponize this when he releases Lucci to help fight the Seraphim, demanding that Lucci come back for his rematch rather than going after the rest of his crew.
* Clone PieceCloning was introduced in the series for some time now but used mainly for nameless goons like the Pacifista and Seraphim. Once Stussy became the first named character to be revealed as a clone, Pandora's Box was also opened as to who was also secretly a clone like Tashigi or Weevil, though most of the speculation was done jokingly. Some even joke that none of the characters seen so far are real and they're actually clones. When it was pointed out that Tashigi was born 1 year before her apparent IdenticalStranger Kuina, the clone theorists decided this means Tashigi and Kuina must both be clones of some other character.
* S-SnakeIn chapter 1059, it was revealed that Boa Hancock's Devil Fruit only works on people who find her attractive. Shortly after, in chapter 1070, S-Snake (who uses an artificial version of Hancock's powers) turned a bunch of marines to stone with them. Since Seraphim look like child versions of the people they're clones of, this has led to a lot of jokes about anyone affected by S-Snake being a pedophile. Though it's later shown that S-Snake actually uses cuteness rather than outright attraction.
** Keep Sanji away from her! This has led to jokes (with varying degrees of seriousness) about Sanji seeing S-Snake and turning to stone due to how irrepressibly horny he is.
* The world has truly entered a Great Pirate Era!Used to express some users to resort into pirating stuffs.
* Luffy stopping Doflamingo from stomping on a near-dead Law has also become widely popular as a reaction image, using it for various scenarios like watching anime episodes (most commonly One Piece itself) to ward off sleep.
* "Yeah he's not cooking shit"A counterpart to the "Let him cook" meme where this sentence captions an image of Luffy, well, attempting to cook as a way to mock attempts to let someone "do their thing" only for it to end poorly.
** "Never cook again." A similar counterpart to the "Let him cook" meme using a panel of Vinsmoke Judge traumatizing a young Sanji, with similar context. It's often used as a reaction image to respond to an opinion or a post you disliked.
*** "cook again." An edit of those same panels were Judge is, instead, encouraging Sanji, used as a reaction image for the opposite purpose.
* Vinsmoke Tate/ "Imagine being a full grown man and being excited by cooking. Not war. Not conquest." Andrew Tate's tweet where he criticized men who are excited about cooking instead of war, even going as far as to compare chefs to worms drew comparisons with Vinsmoke Judge, who similarly looks down on cooks.
* Useless Captain MidA nickname used to mock Eustass Kid's poor performance in one-on-one fights. Especially after [[spoiler:Kid gets oneshotted by Shanks in Chapter 1079]], which caused this meme to become an autofill search result on Google.
* Luffy on his way to X (I gave him Y).Since Luffy's been established to have UndyingLoyalty to anyone who gives him food, many people have joked about Luffy going to topple entire governments or commit acts of international terrorism because someone gave him a little bit of food.
* One Piece is crazy good this weekTaken from Manga/Inuyashiki, a major character happens to be a fan of One Piece, and makes this comment while reading the manga. One Piece fans have since appropriated it and shared it around whenever Oda releases a particularly good chapter.
* Pancake Charlos In chapter 1084 when St.Charlos attempted to kidnap Shirahoshi AGAIN Sai and Leo get permission from Mjosgard to dispose of Charlos. The result of their flattening of the world noble is a hilariously and comically deformed corpse of Charlos. The result has been memed by comparing said result to other flattenings or rejoicing at his demise.
** LOOK HOW THEY MASSACRED MY BOYWhat St.Roswald says soon after in a fan translasion has drawn multiple comparison to the meme from Film/TheGodfather.
* We love UltiA meme made by fans of Kaido's female henchman, Ulti. In addition to "Ulti-posting" which is mostly just sharing cute images of the Pachycephalosaurus woman, the phrase itself is photoshopped into completely unrelated screenshots from the Wano Act 3 finale where a character seems ready to fight over how much they love the little hot head.
* I want Vivi...The very first meme to feature the shadowy BigBad Imu-Sama. The line is uttered by the weird shadow... thing in one translation of a panel in chapter 1086 following a meeting with the Gorosei. Fans are already using it in various ways, from showcasing how much they personally love the character or mocking Imu by saying they're comically obsessed with either bedding or marrying the princess. It's inspired some semi-NSFW artwork of what they do with that picture of Vivi they always seem to have on them. This went even further after it was revealed that Imu is one of the original 19 Celestial Dragons who founded the World Government, and considers Vivi's ancestor Nefertari D. Lili to have betrayed them, thus it was speculated that Imu was in love with Lili and wants to use Vivi as a ReplacementGoldfish.
* Oda is a masterful Foreskinner One Piece is very famous for its frequent use of foreshadowing, even in places that were never expected to be relevant. However, this has also led to the creation of a MisaimedFandom that is completely convinced that every single element of One Piece is incredibly important, leading to the rise of this phrase as an ironic response whenever somebody tries to claim that two completely unrelated scenes are intended to foreshadow one another.
* Crackhead Luffy It is not uncommon for One Piece fans to call Luffy a crackhead for not only his BloodKnight BigEater tendencies, but also his tendency to cause chaos and destruction to the very places he intends to save. [=YouTuber=] Mugiwara no Goofy sums it up pretty well here.
* The Damned One, Jika Due to Kidd's underwhelming performance after the Wano arc, many have started satirically claiming that he'll come back from defeat as Nika's EvilCounterpart and become powerful enough to defeat Shanks. The name is based on his devil fruit, the Jiki Jiki no Mi.
* Blue Haki/[color] Haki/Za Water Following a joke leak whch claimed that Arlong would come back with the ability to use a new kind of Haki type called "Blue Haki" that granted him TimeStandsStill powers, the concept of Blue Haki quickly became a meme and transformed Arlong into a MemeticBadass practically overnight. Since then the meme has expanded to include other colors of Haki such as Brown Haki (used by Higuma) or Gold Haki (used by Don Krieg). Similarly, Arlong's joke leak power has been nicknamed "Za Water" by fans as well.
** [X] Haki Further mutating from the above, fans began to expand the concept beyond just colors. Now, basically anything can be a type of Haki. Probably the most prominet example is Blackbeard's "Offscreen Haki," which allows him to win any fight as long as said fight takes place offscreen. Other examples include "Discrimination Haki" used by Zoro against minorities, or "Zesty Haki," used by MrFanservice types.
** "Za Winda"A follow-up to the Arlong meme above, there's a video of a supposed insider approaching Oda about Arlong's elusive power, only for Oda to confirm the existence of "Za Winda", a similar power possessed by Monkey D. Dragon.
* [X] is a fraud The Fraudhawk meme opened the floodgates for many, many more characters to be called frauds. Basically every character that is hyped up despite having little screen time or feats is now called a fraud, including but not limited to Shanks, Koby, Blackbeard, Ryokugyu, Crocodile, Akainu, and Garp. It's gotten to the point that some people see it as a DiscreditedMeme due to a combination of sheer overuse and some people taking the fraud accusations seriously, but it hasn't stopped everyone.
** FraudhawkIn Chapter 1082, after Buggy expresses that he wants to go after the One Piece, Mihawk brought up the very real concern that the Cross Guild doesn't have the resources to fight against the other three Yonko crews, and that he would much rather enjoy the safety and peace they have while he and Crocodile plan. However, many fans saw this as him admitting that he can't actually fight against Yonkos, and began to call into question if he really was the World's Strongest Swordsman as he claimed. This would eventually spiral into people claiming that all of his feats (such as cutting a frozen wave during the Marineford War) just coincidentally happened when he swung his sword, that he's scared to fight Shanks, or that he doesn't have Conqueror's Haki, or any Haki at all.
*** Mihawk painting his sword The fraud accusations led to fans creating a running joke about how Mihawk might have turned his blade (Yoru) black with paint instead of Haki. Steven John Ward, the actor playing Mihawk in the live-action adaptation, has even gotten in on the joke. After Luffy used a painted baseball bat in chapter 1111, it was joked Mihawk taught him that.
*** "lets stop i'm tired" Some fans have (ironically or otherwise) willfully misinterpreted the conclusion of Mihawk's skirmish with Vista - which was implied to be the result of Mihawk not taking the battle too seriously and also seeing that Whitebeard needed all hands on deck for the next step of his strategy - as Mihawk suddenly being exhausted from fighting a superior swordsman and wanting an excuse to get away. This is often taken further with deranged powerscaling responses from Vista along the lines of "Well, Celestial Dragon Yonko Shanks with no Devil Fruit and using 1% of his Haki would keep going, but okay little guy!"
** Dragon, The World's Worst Criminal/Dragon the Fraud Due to a combination of Dragon being constantly hyped up yet not really doing much of anything, being way too willing to believe Sabo would kill King Cobra for no reason, and his seeming unwillingness to save Ginny in Kuma's flashback, some fans have gotten frustrated with him and allege that he's a fraud or terrible leader.
*** Dragon looking east. It was joked the only thing Dragon does is looking east.
* Rat-Haired Shanks/Shanks D. Snitch/"I'm telling the Gorosei!" Shanks' mysterious nature and actions during the Reverie have caused serious speculation regarding his connection to the World Government, leading some to accuse him of being anything from a plant in the pirate world to a (former) Celestial Dragon. His meeting with the Five Elders about a "certain pirate" has spawned many jokes about him being the pirate equivalent to a schoolyard tattletale, ratting out the other Emperors to the Elders if they start to threaten him. Other jokes include him being the user of the "Rat Rat Fruit, Model: Snitch", a Zoan capable of informing the authorities at a moment's notice, and him having a physical addiction to snitching.
* SexGod Urouge/Urouge the Gigachad "Mad Monk" Urouge of the Worst Generation has sort of become a MemeticBadass by fans for his buff physique, winning smile, and one of his hobbies being lovemaking. This has led the fandom to crown Urouge as one of the most sexually desired people in the One Piece universe. Considering he's also a sky native, his natural wings already give him "godly" vibes. All this despite (or, more likely, because of) him being the least plot-relevant of the Supernovas by a significant margin.
* This image of Luffy with a BalloonBelly has become a popular shitpost.
* Snooj/Sonj A FanNickname for Sanji used mostly by Tumblr, but has spread to Twitter and other sites.
* Kaido's face With the release of Episode 1071 bringing Luffy's Gear 5 to the anime, Luffy sending back Kaido's Blast Breath has this hysterical shot of Kaido's face moments before the attack hits him. Fans immediately ran with it, using it as a reaction in an array of different contexts to express horror or shock.
* Gear DEATH/Gear [X] With Wano marking three separate arcs that end with Luffy unlocking a new gear form, some fans have started joking about a powerup beyond Gear 5, usually some kind of SuperpoweredEvilSide with an extremely serious fighting style usually awakened involving one of the Straw Hats getting killed by an antagonist. Even before the Gear 5 reveal, it was widely expected by fans that Luffy's next transformation would be an overly edgy form with his skin completely covered in Haki and other symbols or neon lights all over his design.
* "Save me, Robin-chan!"After being captured by Black Maria and knowing that he is unable to fight her, he calls Robin to save him from her. In-context, it's clear that Sanji trusts Robin enough to know that she is capable of beating her, although it has been widely memed, such as Shanks calling the Gorosei to save him (in reference to the Rat Haired Shanks meme above), or York begging to be saved from the Straw Hats by Saturn.
* Sweatpiece/Sweatscaling As we move deeper into the final arcs, characters who have long been considered top tiers are finally starting to clash. Since it's... unclear whose stronger most of the time, fans have come to use panels of a character sweating to deduce whether or not they're winning or losing a fight. This kind of powerscaling is considered ridiciulous and is usually mocked when it comes up as an argument, however it's quite prolific in spite of that. Examples include Kaido vs Luffy, Rayleigh vs Blackbeard, Law vs Blackbeard, Shanks vs Kidd, and Kizaru against the Straw Hats on Egghead.
* Queen ImuSince Imu has as of now only been depicted as an ambiguously shaped silhouette, fan artists often give their own interpretation as to how they might look like. It is quite popular to depict them as a woman, with the trademark Oda extreme hourglass figure. Due to how funny the idea is to many fans, and due to the fact that it is a very real possibility, it's become a pretty popular meme.
* Xebec did nothing wrong. It's revealed that Roger and Garp had to team up long ago against a notorious pirate called Rocks D. Xebec, whose goal was to take over the world, and the latter's latest target were the Celestial Dragons at God Valley. But... given that this is the Celestial Dragons we're talking about (the revelations in Chapter 1095 tore away any and all sympathy the fandom had for them), fans started to claim that Xebec's actions were 100% justified and that he was a hero for targeting them even though his crew was the home of many cruel pirates like Kaido, Big Mom and Shiki; Rocks himself was said to violently keep them in check. And it's implied (by Sengoku) that Xebec's only objection to the Celestial Dragons was that they were in the way of his own ambition. All that being said, Rocks himself is still shrouded in enough mystery that the truth can go either way.
* I better keep my ass in this office!!! or im FINISHED❗️❗️As a result of Zoro beating King, who fights with fire and magma powers, this meme is used to joke about or mock Akainu for wanting to avoid fighting Zoro at all costs, due to his own lava-based powers making him a supposed poor matchup for him. The meme is similarly used with other characters from various different series in jokes and powerscaling arguments, when one character takes note of how they are at an apparent severe disadvantage to another.
* Nami/Robin Clones a terminology used by fans who point out the many female characters who have faces and/or body types identical to Nami’s or Robin's.
** Reunion of Nami's clones The reunion between Vivi, Rebecca and Shirahoshi is seen as this, given they're essentially blue-haired Nami, pink-haired Nami and mermaid Nami.
* Piece The oppressive darkness and tragedy of Kuma's backstory has been getting this name lately from the community as we go through his flashback chapters. His life is so sad that it's almost funny but stops just shy enough to be very depressing.
** Bartholomew Guts Kuma's backstory being far too similar to Guts' life.
* Pedo Blackbeard It's revealed during the Egghead arc that Bonney's only 12 years old despite looking like someone who's somewhere in the 20s. Given that Blackbeard claimed that he was going to "make Bonney his woman" in an earlier chapter where he had her as a hostage Pre-Timeskip, meaning she was 10, cue accusations that Blackbeard's a pedophile or jokes of Blackbeard turning himself in to the Marines after finding out Bonney's real age.
* After it was revealed what happened to on Chapter 1098, a subset of the fandom proceeded to spam at Kuma's expense mid-November 2023.
* Luffy's 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day BalloonThe 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade marked Luffy's debut as a parade float, but due to the balloon veering into a nearby tree, the brim of Luffy's hat got punctured and sagged over his face. Numerous jokes about things such as "Bucket Hat Luffy, going fishing for the One Piece" and "Monkey D. Flated" came up, but most jokes were made about Admiral Ryokugyu/Green Bull targeting Luffy's balloon specifically, such as people remarking "we know who did this" and "why is Greenbull in New York City?!". HilariousInHindsight considering the latest episodes of the anime at the time were the ones of Ryokugyu pursuing Luffy after his victory in Wano.
* "The One Piece of/for X" One Piece[='=]s notorious longevity and seeming unwillingness to end have become in itself a source of memes both in and outside the fandom itself. A common joke is calling other long-running series the [='=]One Piece[='=] of their respective genre or for a specific target audience, like calling Series/GreysAnatomy "One Piece for white wine moms" or Series/DoctorWho "One Piece for British people".
* Oda/X who had never thought of any of that: Discussions of symbolism, theories, and foreshadowing in the series by fans that are surprisingly in-depth and meaningful will often lead to Oda earning praise for the thought put into his work or being forgiven for more questionable elements in the plot. That being said, some fans like to joke or semi-seriously claim that Oda actually had no idea of the supposedly well-thought-out implications in his writing (something that had been confirmed by him in small cases like Rob Lucci's accidentally MeaningfulName in the past), and just goes along with what his fans interpret in his work while taking notes about how to properly implement them in the story later. As a result, expect this image of a dumbstruck and nervous Kin'emon with/without this caption edited below or responding to posts with such interpretations due to Kin'emon's own AchievementsInIgnorance in the story. Fans of other series also like to use the meme while swapping Oda out for their own series' mangakas to express similar sentiments.
* Rayleigh crying A .gif image of Rayleigh Silvers wiping away his tears with a smile has been used as a reaction image beginning in the tail end of 2023 that is roughly analogous to "tears in my eyes," and is accordingly used to either express pride for or joy about something, or in a more negative context, derision and mockery.
* ¡Porque somos amiguis! A meme that has amounted huge popularity in the Spanish-speaking community, it's based on this Spanish-dubbed scene where Luffy, Usopp and Chopper find out Bon Clay saved them from the Marines, ask him why and he replies, with TearsOfJoy and a thumbs up, that he did it because they are "amiguis" ("friends", but with some effeminate connotations), by which point the three and Bon Clay dance merrily together while the shot pans out to a conflicted Nami (and Sanji). This same scene has been edited to reference countless other scenes of the heroes and their enemy, represented by Bon Clay, teaming up, and a fourth hero (usually the token girl) has Nami's same uncertain expression while the other good guys dance with the reformed villain. here's a compilation of some examples.
** Romper el internet: Gear 5 ❌ Bon Clay 👍 Due to the aforementioned meme's massive popularity in the Spanish-speaking fandom, an oft-repeated comment under "Amiguis" memes is that it wasn't Gear 5 that managed to break the internet in 2023, but it was this random Bon Clay scene.
* jim An often silly FanNickname for Jimbei.
* Lightspeed Food Delivery/"Delicious Justice"During the fight against Saint Saturn on Egghead in Chapter 1103, Luffy is seen laying, shriveled up, and begging for food, while Atlas remarks that they can't help Luffy considering they cannot move, however a few pages later, Luffy is seen stuffing his face. A popular fan theory is that Kizaru was the one who sneakily gave Luffy food, due to his friendly past with Vegapunk, Sentomaru, Kuma, and Bonney. This theory has given rise to memes about Kizaru working for food delivery services such as [=UberEats.=]
* Robin: "Ah shit, here we go again."As of Chapter 1106, Nico Robin has experienced a grand total of three (five if you count the calls in Stampede and Odyssey) Buster Calls, including the one on Ohara from her childhood, the one on Enies Lobby when she was captive, and the one on Egghead. The fact that she was resting on Egghead at the time of the respective Buster Call's order, many have joked about her reacting with DullSurprise while the rest of her crew freaks out, considering she's suffered more Buster Calls in her life than they have and has become numb to them, be it with the aforementioned GTA: San Andreas quote, or Robin having a Buster Call punchcard coupon similarly to restaraunts who reward repeat visits.
* Van Augur agendaAfter Episode 1093 released, showing an animated section of Kuzan and Van Augur capturing Charlotte Pudding on Totto Land and effortlessly immobilizing Charlotte Cracker, a previously powerful threat for Luffy (especially with Van Augur showing sniping and destroying Cracker's soldiers in one shot), attention to Van Augur started to spike and it effectively made him a MemeticBadass that's actually moderately powerful. Chapter 1107 brought even more eyes on him as he effortlessly brought Devon on to accomplish a mysterious mission that involved Saint Jaygarcia Saturn's likeness, bluntly exclaiming that their goal is "The World".
* Kizaru fans coping. Since Kizaru's reappearance in the Egghead arc, there has been speculation that he is going to defect due to the Admiral saying it's nothing personal, saying he should have brought darker shades to hide the tears and doing the Nika dance in Kuma's flashback. Even after chapter 1108, where Kizaru shot Vegapunk, some fans did not give up on saying he's going to switch sides, saying that he cauterized the wound Saturn inflicted.
* Base LucciSince Chapter 1091, Zoro and Lucci have been fighting each other for quite a number of chapters offscreen while the major plot points are happening outside of Punk Records, and as a result, Zoro has been considered to be far weaker than he used to be if he's struggling this much against a previous foe (thus the term "base Lucci", though he's really fighting an Awakened Lucci who's gained Haki). Not helping matters was Chapter 1105 where Nami sent Jinbe to help him on the fight and also to not get lost. The fight would ultimately last until chapters 1110, where Zoro dealt a significant blow to Lucci, and 1111, where Jinbe concluded the fight with his intervention.
** Lend me some haki ODEN, this is base Lucci we're up against...A direct offshoot of this meme meant to either portray Zoro as a complete weakling or Lucci as just that strong, this image has Zoro calling upon Oden's spirit to (somehow) give him Haki to stand on equal footing with base Lucci.
** Zoro is the new number 4This has gotten even worse as of Chapter 1107, as the previous "number 4" status of Sanji has worn off because of the fact that Sanji has been confronting Admiral Kizaru (and of note, kicked a laser that was directed at Bonney) while Zoro has been struggling with Lucci, causing the two to switch sides in the debate of who was stronger.
** Zoro: Huff, hufff...As the slander against Zoro grew bigger and bigger, fans started pointing out how Zoro was exhaling a little too hard while fighting Lucci, making it a meme that Zoro either has asthma or is just that out of breath from the fight. Funnily enough, in Japanese, Lucci is the one who's exhaling out of exhaustion more than Zoro, who's mostly just exhaling out of irritation.
* Imu getting doxxedChapter 1108 ended on the cliffhanger that Vegapunk was about to reveal "the truth about this world" shortly after he was supposedly killed. Many fans speculated that he would reveal the identity of Imu in the next chapter (he did not due to the broadcast having a time limit of 10 minutes before the reveal), and as such, memes started to be made about how Vegapunk would essentially doxx Imu's location.
* Gorosei MoonSpawning from a fanart connecting the planet-named Elders with Sailor Moon (who are also named after planets) shortly after their names were revealed, Chapter 1109 connected the meme even further when Jaygarcia Saturn contacted the other Gorosei to be summoned unto Egghead to stop Vegapunk from displaying his message, mirroring the teamwork that the Sailor Guardians would do against a villain of the week.
** Gorosei Docking FiveSimilarly to the above, a popular response to this event is a piece of fanart of Luffy reacting to the Gorosei performing a similar technique to Franky's Pirate's Docking Six from Thriller Bark.
* Krieg PostingCommonly having been labeled the weakest villain from the East Blue saga, numerous people began hyping up Krieg as being the strongest pirate in the series, being able to solo extremely powerful characters such as Akainu and even his former losing matchups like Mihawk (which also ties into Fraudhawk as well.) He also becomes edited into the places of major characters such as Whitebeard, Gear 5 Luffy, and Imu.
* Lisan Al-Gaib/Nika Al-GaibDue to the timing of chapter 1110's release and the success of Dune 2, there have been a number of jokes floating around about Luffy filling in the role of the Messiah archetype. Also, Shepard Ju Peter's transformed form is a giant worm, leading to many Shai-Hulud jokes.
* Luffy's assEpisode 1100 of the anime gave us the beginning of the rematch between Luffy and Rob Lucci, during which Luffy in Gear 5 form taunts Lucci by slapping his ComicallyOversizedButt and saying "Kiss my ass!" This moment in the anime has become incredibly notable and the aforementioned ass slap has become a new response towards One Piece detractors and Gear 5 haters.
* Robin plays the Bongcloud AttackChapter 1113 opens with a page of Robin playing chess with the other Straw Hats representing the pieces. Robin is moving the king, represented by Luffy, forward, which is typically strategically unsound outside of the endgame.
