->''"Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I was doomed by a puppet, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?"''
-->-- '''Dr. Doofenshmirtz''', ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerbTheMovieAcrossThe2ndDimension''

...for every time I'd seen this trope, I'd have...[[WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb well, I guess I could buy a candy bar.]]

A {{Stock Phrase|s}}, in response to a frequent event. The character will say something along the lines of, "If I had a nickel for every time X happened, I'd be rich." Expect "nickel" to be [[HoldYourHippogriffs replaced as appropriate]] with whatever currency appears in the work.

A common variant is for the character to simply trail off after the first part, e.g.: "If I had a nickel for every time X happened..." Another possible variant is "If I had a nickel for every X, I'd have (number of X) nickels." Additionally, this trope might be PlayedForLaughs by having the second part of the phrase add up to something impossible (for instance, getting $5.47 from nickels).

This trope often overlaps with NoodleIncident and OhNoNotAgain, in that this is usually the first time we've seen this happen to them. It may also be invoked as a NeverHeardThatOneBefore response to an overly-repeated joke or comment.

This becomes a SubvertedTrope when a character instead says something like, "If I had a nickel for every time X happened...I'd have two nickels." Lately, this subversion has become common enough that the trope looks to be heading towards either {{Dead|HorseTrope}} or UndeadHorseTrope territory.

-->'''James Gunn:''' If I had a penny for every time someone said making a Marvel movie with a talking raccoon was dumb and that ''Guardians'' was going to bomb, I'd probably have just about the amount of money Guardians has made so far. So I'm glad I spent that time making a film instead of counting people and their opinions because we're still going strong. Also, making the movie was a little more productive, and people seem to enjoy it. Not to mention that I would have had a difficult time collecting all those pennies, and the bank would have been pissed off at me when I tried to exchange them for large bills.
* ''Film/ZackSnydersJusticeLeague''. [[ServileSnarker Alfred]] is unimpressed when Bruce Wayne uses this trope, given that he's already a billionaire.

* From Music/JTMusic: "[[VideoGame/BatmanArkhamKnight Say Goodbye to Batman]]" gives an example from the Dark Knight's perspective.

* In one episode of ''Radio/ImSorryIHaventAClue'', Jack Dee says that if he had a pound for every Norman Wisdom film he's seen, he'd probably start watching them.
* In the 26 January 2024 episode of ''Radio/TheNewsQuiz'', Lucy Porter says she's looking forward to seeing another Conservative leadership contest. Andy Zaltzman replies "If I had a pound for every time I've heard someone say that, I would be able to buy myself a supermarket trolley." (Some British supermarkets have trolley release systems that take pound coins as a deposit.)

Ruby is hesitant to do this, as she is not sure if Serafina would approve of it, referring to how much Lilly meant to her. Miles assures her that Serafina doesn't have to know and he promises her that he is only going to "look, not touch." Ruby mutters "If I had a crown for every time I heard that..." under her breath at this.

* Lara Croft gets a really strange and hilarious one in ''VideoGame/TombRaiderTheAngelOfDarkness''. Apparently, nickels don't cut it...
-->'''Lara:''' If I had a coconut for everyone who said that...
* ''VideoGame/TheWonderful101'' gets in on the fun as well.
-->'''Nelson:''' If I had a nickel for every time you paused...

[[OutlivingOnesOffspring You might not've needed to bury quite so many]]!
* ''WebVideo/{{FUDW}}'': In "HOW DW RUINED CHRISTMAS", when Matt points out how in 2001, every African-American cartoon child character celebrated Kwanzaa, [[note]]namely [[WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}} Alan "The Brain" Powers]], [[WesternAnimation/TheProudFamily Penny Proud]], [[WesternAnimation/Rugrats1991 Susie Carmichael]], [[WesternAnimation/{{Stanley}} Marci and Mimi]], and [[WesternAnimation/{{Recess}} Vince LaSalle]],[[/note]] he plays an AI-generated sound clip of [[WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb Dr. Doofenshmirtz]] saying "If I had a nickel for every Christmas cartoon in 2001 that had at least one kid celebrating Kwanzaa, I'd have five nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird they all came out the same year."

Scrooge tries to brush it off by saying "If I had a nickel for every person who cursed me with their dying breath, [[EnemiesEqualsGreatness I'd be twice as rich as I already am]]!"
* ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'':
** Brian uses this expression (without spelling out the "I'd be rich" part of the thought) and is completely dumbfounded when his girlfriend's companions don't recognize the saying on its own. It seems, though, that Brian himself doesn't understand the expression well enough to explain it to them. He seems to be dumbfounded not only because they're unfamiliar with the expression (which is indeed a bit ignorant), but also because he hadn't thought about the expression enough to immediately know the answer to the question "What does that saying mean?"
** Another episode has Meg combine this with CurseCutShort: "If I had a nickel for every time my parents walked out instead of teaching me to drive, I'd be one rich--"
** In "[[WesternAnimation/FamilyGuyPresentsLaughItUpFuzzball Blue Harvest]]", when the ''Millennium Falcon'' gets attacked by TIE Fighters:

** From "[[Recap/KingOfTheHillS13E20ToSirloinWithLove To Sirloin with Love]]":
--->'''Hank:''' If I had a nickel for every time I buckled under pressure, I'd have five nickels.
* ''WesternAnimation/MollyOfDenali'': Kenji remarks in "[[Recap/MollyOfDenaliS1E9TheWormTurnsLittleDogLost Little Dog Lost]]" that if he had a nickel for every dog that took off and then found its way home, he'd have a lot of nickels.

* ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'':

** In "[[Recap/PhineasAndFerbWizardOfOdd Wizard of Odd]]", Buford (who is a [[MixAndMatchCritters combination of lion, tiger and bear]]) says this after [[NeverHeardThatOneBefore Candace, Jeremy and Baljeet's response to seeing him was "Oh my"]].
* ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'':
** Parodied:
--->'''Dr. Hibbert:''' Oh, if I had $75 for every novelty I've removed... Oh, by the way, I'll need a check for $75.

'''Homer:''' Hey there, Grimey!\
'''Grimes:''' I'd appreciate it if you'd stay out of my office, Simpson.\
'''Homer:''' Heh! If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'' episode "[[Recap/SpongeBobSquarePantsS1E4NaughtyNauticalNeighborsBoatingSchool Naughty Nautical Neighbors]]", as said by Squidward to [=SpongeBob=] while imitating Patrick:
-->''"If I had a dollar for every brain you don't have, I'd have ''one dollar!''"''
* In ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', after Mr. Smiley's robot fortune teller gives Steven an unsatisfying fortune:
