18Most writers, unsurprisingly, are not practiced archers, and the pastime is rare enough in the modern day that consultants are not always easy to find. Add on 100+ years of Hollywood doing what it likes with any subject matter, and certain errors have become compounded to the point of being commonplace. Many of these are the result of ignorant creators assuming that familiar GunsAndGunplayTropes can simply happen in exactly the same way with bows. Modern depictions, aided by CGI that is not tied to the real world in any way, often misrepresent both the best practices of archery and the physics involved.

21* Misrepresenting the draw strength of a bow. A good war bow can have a draw strength of around 150 pounds, the equivalent of lifting a small barbell every time you fire it. Rigorous physical training is needed even to draw such a bow, much less loose it accurately.
22* Holding a bow at full draw for a significant period of time while threatening a target or taking aim. See draw weight above. Muscles aren't meant to hold tension for a long time and will become shaky after a couple of seconds, decreasing accuracy or at worst accidentally loosing the arrow. The practice in real life is to aim, then draw immediately before firing. Modern ''compound'' bows have mechanical parts that allow for "let off" of much of the weight at full draw (and lower weight to begin with), making holding it more reasonable. Longbows or recurve bows simply cannot be shot this way unless magic is involved.
23* Misrepresenting the range and penetration of an arrow. The best historical longbow would have been able to shoot up to 400 yards, with a modern bow perhaps doubling that range. An arrow from a war bow could penetrate even modern body armor with luck, but not plate steel, and nothing could make it go all the way through a target, even an unarmored squishy human. Real arrows will also not stick in concrete and similar materials, although they might dent them. Loosing an arrow into concrete will damage the arrow at best and reflect it back at the archer (or a bystander) at worst.
24* Depictions of an arrow in flight will often show the shaft remaining straight. In reality, the shaft of an arrow flexes and wobbles while in flight, due to the stress imparted onto it by the bow.
25* Bows that remain in their resting shape when drawn while the string extends. In real bows, the string is always the same length -- it's the limbs that flex backwards and, in so doing, store energy that released in the arrow when the archer looses it. This is why the best bow-making woods, like yew, are the ones with the most innate elasticity.
26* Lack of protective equipment. Archers in all time periods wore various gear to protect their hands and arms from the power of their own bows. Eye protection is also recommended.
27* Leaving a bow strung when not in use or loosing it without an arrow loaded. Both of these can damage the bow.
28* Hanging the quiver on your back. Real archers generally have their quiver hanging by their side, usually opposite side from their dominant hand. Reaching behind your back to grab an arrow takes more time and is more tiring for your arm than taking one out of a hip-mounted quiver.
29* A common terminology has a work's narration say that people ''fire'' a bow as a back-formation from firearm terminology. The correct expression is to ''loose'' or ''release'' an arrow.
30* Showing a fully-drawn bow shorter than its bowstring, common in illustration, animation, and video games. Such a setup would be impossible to use in real life.
31* As a lot of arrows in live-action are CGI, very often the procedure to notch an arrow is completely wrong. With the usual grip having the palm facing inward, and the bow being Mediterranean grip [[note]]This is the one where you use the middle three fingers to draw the string with the bow held between the index and middle finger and the arrow rested on the bow's aiming slot opposite to the draw hand. Right-handed bows have their arrows rested on the aiming apparatus on the left side[[/note]]. The typical draw is the person drawing the arrow with two strings, and then somehow immediately docking it and drawing it back. This is literally impossible with the usual Mediterranean grip in one fluid motion, because the bow itself is in the way. This would require the archer to lower the bow to properly notch the arrow, before drawing and loosing it, but this is almost always skipped over. The only way to do this in one fluid motion with the bow facing upward would be to have the palm outward, which [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1t48TG4AIc is possible]] but [[ImprobableUseOfAWeapon unconventional]].
