5	Anna Nix, gifted student and cello player, accidentally kills her stepfather in self-defense when he tries to rape her. Due to her mother denying that the stepfather did anything to her, Anna is sent away for 4 years in a maximum security facility for involuntary manslaughter. There, she has to find her place in the hierarchy of the jail and figure out how she's going to survive.

11	* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Despite being beaten repeatedly, the worst that Anna comes away with is a scar on her cheek.
12	* BungledSuicide: Anna cuts her wrists in solitary after having discussed the possibility earlier with other inmates. Of course, she was also naked in solitary while suffering from crack withdrawal, so she may not have been trying to kill herself.

For example, a nurse gets killed off gruesomely and realistic by being shanked by prisoners, the main character almost gets raped by her father and she kills him in self-defense, etc.

The warden is revealed as coercing many of the prisoners into sex in return for favors, which the main character (who's herself a victim of this) reveals eventually, getting him arrested.
