!!Identfication of some tropes:

* AuthorAvatar. In this movie Antonioni, for the first time in his career, makes the main character a film director.
* DistinctionWithoutADifference: The unknown man who warns Niccolò against meeting the woman called Mavi Luppis says that it is not a threat but a warning.
* DutchAngle: In the very first shot the viewer sees what appears to be the wall with some carpet. However then the door opens from camera below and the viewer realises that the camera is set above the door and looks down. It shoots the character from above. The carpet is a rug on the floor.
* HarassingPhoneCall: Niccolò receives the one in the beginning.
* TheHero: Niccolò.
* HotterAndSexier: This film contains numerous examples of complete nudity. Its tone is generally sexier than in any of the previous Antonioni works.
* OnlyOneName: For everyone in this film except for those who are parents or [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep called barkeeps]]. No-one is credited by both the name and the surname.
** Mavi Luppis is the subversion still according to Website/TheOtherWiki.
* PopStarComposer: Several of them. Some of the best-known artists of the early 80's worked on the movie, including Music/{{Japan}}, Music/{{Ultravox}} and Music/TangerineDream, whose distinctive style is instantly recognisable.
* TheQuest: Niccolò searches for the actress for his next arthouse film. That's what the titular "Identificazione" or "Identification" stands for.
* ReunionShow: The first film Antonioni made in UsefulNotes/{{Italy}} in 18 years. ''Il mistero di Oberwald'' (1981) was also this, but it was made for TV.
* UnnamedParent: Both of Mavi's parents.
* TheXOfY: Both in the English version and in the original name. Syntactically the formula "X di Y" is similar.
