!!Examples
* BlackDudeDiesFirst: [[spoiler: Lucy's Latino boyfriend Jose]] is the first person we see die.
* BrooklynRage: Bushwick was chosen as a target for the invasion because enemy intelligence thought its "ethno-variety" combined with New York's notoriously strict gun laws would make it an easy target. Boy, are they proven wrong.
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of the film, Lucy goes from DamselInDistress to ActionSurvivor.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler:Stupe is shot by some random girl]] after he accidentally [[TheCanKickedHim walks into a bathroom in which she's hiding]]. Then [[spoiler: Lucy is [[BoomHeadshot shot in the head]] while attempting to drag her sister to safety. The final shot after some strangers pick her up and take her with them to the evacuation zone is of the Manhattan skyline with buildings on fire.]]
* DividedStatesOfAmerica: The faceless, black-clad goons are not a foreign military force, but mercenaries from a [[DeepSouth Texas-led coalition of states]] [[UsefulNotes/TheAmericanCivilWar attempting to secede from the US]].
* DrivenToSuicide: Lucy needs to find a man named Father John to help convince the people inside the church to join the armed resistance. [[spoiler: She ends up finding him praying in the basement and asks him for help. He's so rattled by the events of the war that he pulls out a gun and shoots himself.]]
* EverybodyDiesEnding: The invaders didn't anticipate the heavy resistance they encounter and quickly switch to this tactic against anyone who resists them. Only [[spoiler: Belinda and the gang members]] survive the movie.
* FacelessGoons: The black-clad soldiers are this, except for one, who is unmasked as part of the film's big reveal.
* FanDisservice: After learning that [[spoiler: Grandma]] didn't make it, Belinda grieves for a few moments, tokes on a bong, and then tries to seduce Stupe by flashing her panties at him in his face. The term 'too soon' is an understatement here.
* {{Fingore}}: Lucy's left ring finger is shot off during a gunfight with a looter.
* HealItWithFire: Stupe gets a long shard of glass through his leg after he kills some looters in an apartment building with a grenade. When he and Lucy get to the roof of the building to catch their breath he gets her to help him remove the shard and cauterize the wound with a flare and his army knife.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:Both Stupe and Lucy are dead by the end of the movie]].
* ManOnFire: A man on fire suddenly appears in the subway station that Lucy and her boyfriend Jose are in. It's one of the first signs that something is very, ''very'' wrong.
* NewYorkIsOnlyManhattan: Averted. The film is set in Bushwick and filmed on location in Brooklyn.
* NotBloodSiblings: This is apparently the case with Lucy and Belinda, as Lucy explains to Stupe that they were both raised by Grandma, meaning they're sisters in that way. As neither looks anything alike (Lucy is white, Belinda most probably a Latina) they likely aren't even half-sisters.
* NotSoStoic: Near the end of the film, the normally calm Stupe finally snaps at Lucy for asking too many questions. He then sits down with her and emotionally describes [[spoiler: what happened to his wife and son (they were killed on 9/11), his career in the Marine Corps and as a medic, why he left on a medical discharge, and how he just can't seem to escape the violence in his life.]]
* SacrificialLamb: [[spoiler: Lucy's boyfriend]] is killed in the first few minutes of the film.
* TheOner: The film consists almost ''entirely'' of long, unbroken takes.
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The big mid-film reveal won't be a surprise to anyone that's seen the trailer.
* WhamShot: When [[spoiler: Stupe]] gets shot by the random girl in the bathroom, after a lengthy scene where [[spoiler: he reveals his tragic backstory to Lucy]].
