!!This work contains examples of:

* AbsurdlyHighStakesGame: after Watto refuses to sell him Shmi, Azem decides to challenge him at sabacc. While Ben Quadrinaros wagers one million peggats and Bib Fortuna wagers a vornskr, Watto wagers Shmi... and Azem wagers his freedom, arguing that either Shmi is free to join her son, or he will be enslaved at her side so she won't be alone. Not spoilers: Azem wins.
* AndImTheQueenOfSheba: after a flustered Anakin denies having a crush on Padme, Azem retorts: "Right, and I'm the Archbishop of Ishgard." The joke is that Azem killed the last Archbishop, which caused Ishgard to switch to democracy soon after.
* BalanceBetweenLightAndDarkness: in opposition to the Jedi, who believe "balance in the Force" means the domination of the Light Side, Azem is a firm proponent to "balance" being Light and Darkness standing on equal footing. Given his experiences during the events of Shadowbringers, his point of view is at the very least justified.
* BilingualBackfire: PlayedWith in that it is rather unintentional on both sides. Shmi sometimes shifts into an alternate language that is not Basic, first adressing a blessing to Azem, then scolding Anakin during the assault on the palace. Both times, Azem fails to realize she switched languages because of Omniglot the Echo and understands what she says perfectly.
* BondCreature: after Azem wins a vornskr at a sabacc game, Anakin creates a Force Bond with her, effectively making her his familiar.
* CanineCompanion: Argos faithfully serves Azem as his companion. Azem himself keeps him around in memory of Venat. Anakin, meanwhile, later bonds with a vornskr he names Pateessa.
* CultureClash: the Jedi have strong beliefs concerning the Light Side and the Dark Side of the Force. Though it isn't revealed how the Force is connected to aether and dynamis, Azem still has his own experience with Light and Darkness that is much different from the Jedi's. A heated debate ensues between him, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan that leads to some disturbing revelations for the Jedi..
* CurbStompBattle: the story starts post-Endwalker and features the Warrior of Light. Naturally, Azem tears through any threat in his path with way too much ease, be they Tusken Raiders or Federation droids. In Obi-Wan's Force Visions, whenever Darth Maul faced him, it was less a fight and more a one-sided beatdown.
* TheDeadHaveNames: after Qui-Gon dies, Azem mentally lists all the people he lost during his adventures, starting with Noraxia. He ends the list with Zenos, Misija and Qui-Gon - then remembers it started with his family, namely his mother and grandfather.
* DeadpanSnarker: Fray's wit is as dry as Tatooine's sands, something Padme takes note of.
* DoomedHometown: Azem's birthplace, a nameless village in Dalmasca, was razed by Garlean soldiers. Azem, then a modest ForestRanger, promptly got even. Then he sailed to Eorzea and the rest is history.
* EvilDetectingDog: Downplayed. Vornskr can detect Force users, like their prey the ysalamiri, but also the Jedi... and the Sith. Palpatine has to double on his shields so Pateessa doesn't simply sniff him out.
* FullNameUltimatum: during the raid on Theed Palace, while they are in the starfighter hangar, Shmi sharply tells Anakin to stay where he is in their native language. It turns out that, in said language, Anakin is An'Ahn-Kyh, "Steals the Hidden Light".
* ImprobableAimingSkills: for a recently-freed slave with no combat training, Shmi is a surprisingly-good shot with a blaster. She never misses once in the story, and Panaka later offers her a job among the Royal Guards.
* InSpiteOfANail: even with the knowledge of Obi-Wan's Force Visions, Qui-Gon still dies at Darth Maul's hands - but not before beheading the Sith first.
* KilledOffForReal: though he manages to fatally stab Qui-Gon, the elder Jedi still has the last laugh against Darth Maul by beheading him instead of cutting him in half. Darth Maul is well and truly dead as a result.
* TheMagicPokerEquation: during the sabacc game to free Shmi, the final round sees Watto display a Pure Sabacc, which is normally the highest hand possible... only for Azem to answer with an Idiot's Array, which trumps even a Pure Sabacc. Azem wins.
* MamaBear: Shmi is protective of Anakin and will do what she can to ensure his well-being. Even if she has to stare down Mace Windu to convince him that no, her son is not joining the Jedi Order. This isn't what Qui-Gon wanted.
* MasterOfAll: WordOfGod says Azem mastered every Job in the game. During the course of the story, he freely shifts between them and uses his journey to improve them.
* MeaningfulName: Anakin names his vornskr partner Pateessa, the Huttese word for friend, because she is his CanineCompanion.
* MutualKill: Qui-Gon manages to kill Darth Maul in spite of being fatally stabbed, ensuring the Sith won't be a problem later on.
* PapaWolf: Azem is naturally protective of Anakin. When Tusken Raiders try to shoot him down, he uses the Bard Soul Crystal to deliver a CurbStompBattle. Then Sebulba threatens the boy and finds himself with a HandCannon pointed to his face.
* ParentalSubstitute: Azem becomes a surrogate father to Anakin, much to his pleasure. Between helping him hone his mechanical skills and his protectiveness of the boy, Padme actually asks if he is Anakin's father. Then he lulls the boy to sleep during the trip to Coruscant. The ship's crew finds the scene adorable.
* PrecociousCrush: as is cannon, Anakin is quite taken by Padme. Azem never loses an occasion to tease him about it, much to the boy's embarassment.
* OffWithHisHead: during their fight with Darth Maul, the Sith manages to stab Qui-Gon... who retaliates by beheading him with the last of his strength, effectively killing him for good. Obi-Wan later hands it over to the Jedi.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Azem isn't the Warrior of Light's true name. It is the name of his Seat as a member of the Convocation of Fourteen and the alias he chose for his journey. His true name isn't revealed in-story, but WordOfGod says his last name is Hiroshi.
* Seers: Obi-Wan has an instinctive connection wih the Cosmic Force which allows him to easily have Force Visions. Being an adept of the Living Force himself, and concerned his padawan may lose himself in contemplation of the future, Qui-Gon trained him out of it. Shmi verbally tears into him for it, pointing that the gift of foresight is rare enough as it is and he should have simply found someone who could teach him student. Qui-Gon concedes the point.
* ShipTease: Qui-Gon and Shmi seem to have a thing for each-other, though they never get the chance to develop it. In at least one of Obi-Wan's Force Visions, Qui-Gon left the Jedi Order to marry her.
* TheStoryteller: as befits his mastery of the Bard Soul Crystal, Azem is skilled at telling tales, even spicing them with songs from VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV. The way he tells his story to the crew of the ship is compared to an epic.
* TheWorldIsJustAwesome: and Azem definitely thinks Coruscant is a marvel of technology and engineering on par with the Ancients of Etheirys, if his narrated description of it is anything to go by.

* AdaptationalBadass: In canon, Jar-Jar is just a clumsy Gungan with an UnluckilyLucky streak. In the story, he is .
** Boss Rogue turns to have been a Sith Lord with a fondness for biomanipulation, something which explains the creatures the group met in Spearhead.
* AdventureGuild: Queen Amidala agrees to have Helios and Shmi start one on Naboo, after Sio Bibble explains the meaning of the word and they note its members would be less mercenaries and more polyvalent problem-solvers.
* AffablyEvil: is very much a Sith Lord. He remains jovial and curious, eager to discuss science with Helios and hear his story while admitting he would miss if he were to die.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: As Helios explains, the reason he got the Seat of Azem wasn't because he was Venat's protégé. It was because he was the only one who could fight her to a standstill.
* BadassBoast: As he channels his LimitBreak, Helios delivers an impressive one to .
-->I am Helios Skywalker, IHaveManyNames also known as Lux Hiroshi and Tristan Chase. In ages long gone, I was known as Helios diateleo, The Errant Sun. I have borne many titles over the ages. I am the Warrior of Light and the Shadowbringer, the Defender of the Realm and the Endwalker. I am a former member of the defunct Convocation of Fourteen, which ruled over Ancient Etheirys. Mine was the Fourteenth Seat, the Seat of Azem, the Traveler. The duty of the Traveler is to wander the star, befriend its people and protect them from harm. Though my home lays sundered and I walk a different star, my duty remains. To wander. To befriend. To protect. You are a threat. Begone! Arsenal of Light!
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: as he watches Azem get his identity papers - and, in the process, reveal key informations of his past - Yoda grows curious about the adventurer's story. Shmi has Queen Amidala send him her recording of Azem's tale. Yoda is greatly disturbed by its content and notes to keep it under the highest level of security of the Jedi Archives. Because it could cause weaker Jedi to Fall. Jocasta Nu is in tears after listening to the tale, and this is after spending a week preparing herself.
* BeneathNotice: Averted hard. Because of its past as a DeadlyDecadentCourt, Naboo will pay extra attention to servants, who are commonly trained in biology and small arms. It stands in stark contrast to the slavers Anakin knew, who made that exact mistake and paid for it.
* CallBack: When musing that Shmi and Y'shtola would get along, Helios remembers how he told Y'shtola "Yes, Mom" once and was threatened with a spanking, and how she calling Magnai "Little Sun" always made him chuckle. The first event was a dialogue option in Shadowbringers while the second occured during one of their visits of the Azim Steppe in Stormblood.
** Upon visiting Otoh Gunga for the first time, Helios repeats Venat's words about the beauty of the world and how it brings her joy. He then tearfully admits she would have loved the city.
* ChildByRape: Downplayed. Helios's mother did agree to sleep with that Garlean soldier. But, when the alternative was brutal retribution on her village and being taken regardless, Shmi wonders how much of a choice it was.
* CommonalityConnection: Anakin and Shaa Rokye bond over their difficulties with Basic and their fondness of Pateessa.
** It turns out slave and Naboo culture have a mutual fondness for secrecy. With Shmi's blessing, Anakin does a presentation on the topic which proves to be popular among his classmates.
* CoolTeacher: Ms. Viala is very friendly and understanding toward Anakin. She has the test sheets translated to Huttese when it turns he cannot read Aurebesh and is pained to know he can pilot a starfighter. She also gives him paths to explore in his future studies after he tells her he is a skilled mechanic and praises him for speaking three languages at nine.
* CutenessProximity: Shaa Rokye, a Gungan classmate of Anakin, finds Pateessa adorable. Pateessa seems to like her in turn.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Jar-Jar sees the Skywalkers as his friends and will defend them if it proves necessary. .
* DeadlyDecadentCourt: Not anymore but, in the past, intrigues and powerplays were common among the Naboo, to the point those days are known as the Days of Cloak and Daggers. They are still practiced today, only they are kept nonlethal. The Naboo call the practice the Great Game.
* EvilutionaryBiologist: Boss Rogoe was one. Amidst his creations are Dark-infused Gungans and the various mutated creatures Helios, Shmi, Anakin and Jar-Jar found in Spearhead. He met his demise when they turned against him.
* FamilyOfChoice: Azem choosing Skywalker as a last name makes it clear he sees Shmi and Anakin as his new family. The two former slaves approve and welcome him in.
* FuzzTherapy: PlayedWith. Technically, Pateessa is a psychatric service vornskr. However, everyone understands she bears that label so Anakin can bring her to school because of their Force bond. She still ends up fulfilling this trope by being a comforting presence in an environment he is utterly unfamiliar with.
* IHaveManyNames: Azem switches names like he switches Jobs. As an Unsundered Etheiryan, he was called Helios, with Azem as the name of his Seat. His birthname is Lux Hiroshi, but he switched to Tristan Chase after settling in Eorzea. The name he chooses in the Galaxy is Helios Skywalker.
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: is a Sith apprentice, yet his desire is to build an Order which can coexist with the Jedi, arguing that both are necessary to the Galaxy and the Galaxy is wide-enough for both sides. calls him naive and doesn't believe it'll work. Helios is more supportive.
* LimitBreak: Helios's personal finishing move is Arsenal of Light, where he makes copies of HardLight of his weapons and strikes at his target with each of them - to devastating effect.
* NoAnimalsAllowed: Normally, animals aren't allowed at school on Naboo. However, assistance animals are so the Skywalkers have Pateessa registered as Anakin's psychatric service vornskr, with a special harness labelling her as such.
* NoodleIncident: When talking about administration, Helios mentions he once got into a fight with the entire Convocation of Fourteen. He won.
* OlderThanHeLooks: Because Louisoix sent him and the other adventurers five years in the future, Helios is biologically twenty-one and chronologically twenty-six. It causes a bit of an issue when making his ID card.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: shortly before revealing himself to be , Jar-Jar shifts from Gungan Basic to flawless Aurebesh. Helios takes notice.
* OurSoulsAreDifferent: Ooh boy... When getting his papers, Helios explains that while he is biologically an UnevenHybrid, he is psychically a Sundered Etheiryan. The bureaucrat isn't sure he wants to know about the "sundered" part. Yoda sadly is, which leads to a short explanation of the Final Days and Etheirys's current situation.
* PetMonstrosity: Even though she is Anakin's CanineCompanion with which he shares a Force Bond, it doesn't change the fact that Pateessa is a vornskr who can detect Force users and is driven to hunt them. Principal Aliko still tolerates her at school as Anakin's psychatric service animal.
* PuttingThePalInPrincipal: Principal Aliko is friendly and understanding toward the Skywalkers' situation, finding a way for Anakin to bring Pateessa at school and appointing one of the school's nicest teachers to assess his academic skills.
* RedMage: Before exploring Spearhead, Helios gives Anakin the RedMage Soul Crystal. The boy takes to it with surprising speed, especially with the adventurer giving him pointers.
* SideBet: Shmi and Helios have one on whether Anakin's first day at school will see an incident happen. It doesn't. Shmi passes Helios fifty credits.
* TeasingFromBehindTheLanguageBarrier: When a bully targets Shaa Rokye, one of Anakin's classmates and an Otolla Gungan, for not speaking proper Basic, Anakin calls him out by asking if the bully speaks his language, Huttese. He then proceeds to call him an idiot. Helios finds it "Rude but fair".
* UnevenHybrid: While the Skywalkers are getting identity papers, Helios reveals he is one-fourth Raen Au Ra, one-fourth Dalmascan Hyur and one half Garlean Hyur. Now, remember Dalmasca had been invaded at this point and Helios never mentions his father. The implications are... ugly.
* WorthyOpponent: Against Jar-Jar's wishes, animates statues to fight the group, causing the Gungan to assist them. After Helios uses his LimitBreak to destroy the statues, praises them and says that, if anything, understated their strength.
