->''"I never originally intended for them to be anything other than an idle exercise in character design. I never gave them names. But they were a lot of fun to draw, and I ended up getting kind of fond of them."''
-->-- '''Zarla'''

''Respect A Woman'' is the name of the [[http://community.livejournal.com/respectawoman/ LJ Community]] for a shared ''VideoGame/Left4Dead'' fanfic Universe by (amongst others, including anyone who wants to join in) Zarla and Jazaaboo. Disappointed with the level of sexualisation usually involved in Rule 63/Genderswap art, Zarla designed two realistic pre-infection Special Infected, intended to be the male version's [[DistaffCounterpart distaff counterparts]]. Hunter is a short, active, East Asian GenkiGirl, while Smoker is a tall, whip-thin DeadpanSnarker. They meet when Hunter accidentally breaks Smoker's window and Smoker makes her work off the cost of a new one. This oddest of odd couples soon develops a [[OddFriendship firm friendship]].

Then the [[TheVirus zombie]] [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt apocalypse]] hits. In the original storyline (since they were created as zombies to begin with), Hunter becomes infected by one of her parkour friends and [[DownerEnding infects Smoker in turn]]. However, over time [[AlternateUniverse another storyline]] began to take traction where the two of them proved to be immune to the virus, and not knowing what else to do, Hunter and Smoker searched for rescue and tried to survive. They meet Charger, [[StraightMan a serious woman]] who knows her animals and applies her skills to predicting the actions of the zombies, and Jockey, a relatively young girl with what one might charitably describe as [[TheMentallyDisturbed perception problems]]. These last two were designed by Jazaaboo.

The shared universe also includes storylines where the outbreak never happened, along with a Cowboy Universe and...

The one thing that never changes is the characters.

----
!!!This...whatever...contains examples of:
* AcademyOfAdventure: The schoolgirl AU. Some kind of ghosts or spirits stalk the grounds at night, and all four protagonists are trained in the use of some kind of weapon.
* ActionGirl: The main cast might have no practical combat experience (except maybe Charger) and they're all woefully unprepared for what happened, but they can look after themselves. For the most part.
* ActionSurvivor: Smoker, Hunter, and Jockey at first, although Charger teaches them how to use guns and survive.
* AdaptationalNationality: Hunter is Chinese in the Cowboy!AU whilst being Japanese in all other universes, as Chinese people were substantially more common in the WildWest than Japanese people were.
* AerithAndBob: Smoker goes to work with Griffin, Mousey (actually Angie) and [[VideoGame/Left4Dead Louis]].
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Mousey/Angie is all-but-stated to be romantically interested in Smoker, while Smoker is already in some sort of relationship with Hunter and generally finds Mousey annoying. It's a DownplayedTrope given that she marries a man and, in the Cured!AU, is shown to still be [[TheLostLenore mourning him]], indicating that he wasn't simply TheBeard.
** It's [[DiscussedTrope discussed]] by Charger and Hunter in the [[http://www.lolhelensucks.com/images/huntersmoker/ChargerHuntercuredmousey1.gif Cured!AU]], with Charger suggesting that Mousey deliberately seeks out women who she knows will reject her as a way to self-aggrandize and avoid having to actually confront her own feelings.
* AlphaBitch: Sparkles, one of Smoker's coworkers.
* AlternateUniverse: The characters show up in a number of different settings, including:
** Hunter and Smoker before the outbeak.
** One where Hunter, Smoker, Jockey and Charger are survivors.
** One where they're infected.
** One where they're infected who've been cured by the recovering government and now live in an area sectioned off for cured infected and survivors.
** One where they're cowboys.
** One where they're mobsters.
** One set in an AcademyOfAdventure.
** One where Travis, Hunter's friends, and David are the survivors.
** One where Smoker, or all of the survivors, have wings.
** One where Smoker or Hunter is a vampire.
** One where Smoker's a serial killer.
** One where they survived the zombie apocalypse as survivors.
** A Final Fantasy parody.
** A cops-and-robbers themed one.
** An April Fool's day parody crossover with Metal Gear.
** A Franchise/{{Castlevania}} alternate universe.
** One where they're Franchise/{{Pokemon}} trainers.
** A ANime/MyNeighborTotoro crossover.
** A Webcomic/{{Homestuck}} crossover.
** A Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica crossover.
** It's worth noting that most of these are pretty small. [[http://zarla.livejournal.com/529718.html This]] is a list of the main ones.
** In addition, the survivor and infected variants have a number of stories where one or more of them die. For the Not Immune and Sacrifice scenarios, stories are written exploring what would happen if each one succumbed. What this means is that while there are plenty of stories or sketches where one or more of them die, they're all considered to be alive unless it's specifically stated otherwise.
* AmnesiacLover: Both Smoker and Hunter in the Cured universe. Neither of them remember their lives before the infection, but they remember each other. When they first meet, Smoker signs (she's mute) a heart into Hunter's palm.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Smoker, oh so very much, in ''Now What?''. Hunter disappears for a month without letting Smoker know beforehand. When she returns, Smoker blows up at her.
* AntiHero: Psychopro. He kills zombies, but that's all he has going for him.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: Hunter is easily distracted by bubblewrap.
--> '''Smoker''': "Having fun?"
--> '''Hunter''': "Shh."
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Smoker and Hunter may fight, but it never seems to last very long.
* AxeCrazy: Psychopro, a survivor, likes to torture and kill infected, taking trophies from his victims. He also wrote the "I'm happier now. I can kill anyone I like." graffiti that you can find in a safehouse.
* BackToBackBadasses: The survivors do this on occasion, usually when facing a horde.
* BattleCouple: Hunter and Smoker, especially in the Wild West universe where Smoker's got less issues with their relationship.
* BeautifulAllAlong: Subverted. Smoker cleans up pretty nice, but both she and Hunter consider it far more effort than it's worth.
* BerserkButton: Anything that would make a tempting target for an undead can cause a temporary reversion for the Cured.
** Charger really hates big game hunters.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Jockey's downright scary on adrenaline.
* BigDamnHeroes: Charger introduces herself to Smoker and Hunter by killing a pair of special infected that have them pinned.
* BlatantLies:
--> '''Smoker''': "Someone has filched my beef jerky."
--> '''Hunter''': "Wow that is the weirdest thing. I wonder who it was."
--> '''Smoker''': (with braided hair) "I assume I have (Hunter or Jockey) to thank for this."
--> '''Hunter''': "Whaaaaaat? Why would you think that?"
* BreakTheCutie: Poor Jockey.
* BrokenPedestal: Smoker when she finds out that the Midnight Riders lip-synch. Jockey convinces her that the tape was only for emergencies, though.
* CannotSpitItOut: Hunter at first.
--> '''Hunter''': (mentally) Tell her! Tell her! Tell her! Tell her right now!
--> '''Smoker''': "Alright I'm going to sleep."
--> '''Hunter''': "OKAY GOODNIGHT" (mentally) WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME
* CatGirl: Not literally, but Hunter has some very catlike traits aside from her cat-eared hoodie, such as her reaction [[http://www.ashido.com/temp/art/HunterSmokerfprethunder.gif to thunder.]]
* CigaretteOfAnxiety: Smoker goes through a bowl of them when the outbreak starts.
* CloudCuckooLander: Very often, Jockey will completely veer off into her own head and insist that everything is fine and there is no zombie apocalypse, that loved ones are not in fact dead, but still alive and waiting for them somewhere, etc.
* ClusterFBomb: Smoker drops plenty of these when trying to quit smoking.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Gangster!Griffin hands a captured David over to Psychopro for this purpose.
* CombatPragmatist: The main four are no strangers to doing what it takes to win a fight.
* CradlingYourKill: If Smoker kills a newly-zombified Hunter, she does this.
* CrashIntoHello: Hunter and Smoker initially meet when Hunter misses a parkour jump and goes through Smoker's window instead.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Mousey was one of Smoker's coworkers before the Green Flu. She got her nickname because [[ShrinkingViolet it fit]]. In the Cured universe, she's a survivor who ended up in curetown. This implies some level of badassery, but what solidifies it is her tackling Charger, who's having a temporary zombie reversion, and getting her to cool down without hurting anyone. Of course, the rest of the time, she's still very much a ShrinkingViolet, but she's trying.
* CurseOfTheAncients: Smoker's preferred exclamations run something along the lines of "Jeezum Crow!"
* CuteBruiser: Hunter prefers melee weapons, and is probably the strongest member along with Charger.
* CuteLittleFangs: Hunter is occasionally drawn with these, tying in with her cat motif. [[http://www.ashido.com/temp/HunterSmokerfpreletsgo.gif For example.]]
* DarkReprise: Smoker sings "Into the Fire" to get the group psyched up. Later, Jockey sings it when she's the SoleSurvivor.
** Pre-infection, Smoker and Hunter watched ''Film/{{West Side Story|1961}}''. In Hunter's Not Immune scenario, Smoker sings it to her. While it's the same song both times, the loss is much closer to home the second time.
* DeadManWriting: Charger leaves the other survivors a note in her Not Immune scenario before she leaves the others. It's unknown if she's dead or a zombie, though.
* DeadpanSnarker: Smoker. Hunter also enjoys sarcasm, but to a lesser degree.
* DeathByOriginStory: David, Charger's husband. His death is why she's so closed off. He's still alive in the mobster and cowboy universes, though, and on death's door in the Totoro crossover.
* DeerInTheHeadlights: Warlock, a male survivor based on the Witch, suffers heavily from this. As he was already a tightly wound ball of anxiety during the preinfection days, you can imagine how this [[TearsOfFear plays]] [[FreakOut out]] in general when the infection hits.
* DieOrFly: When Winged!Charger (who doesn't think she can fly) and Jockey are stuck on a roof with too many zombies to kill, Jockey jumps off the roof to force Charger to try.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Smoker doesn't like anybody much, but all of the men in her life are basically slimeballs.
* DopeSlap: Smoker to Hunter when she pranks her.
* DramaticDrop: Smoker drops her cigarette in [[spoiler: Hunter]]'s Not Immune scenario when Smoker finds out that she's becoming a zombie.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler: In Charger's Not Immune scenario, she gets some distance between herself and the others and then kills herself rather than become a zombie.]]
** [[spoiler: Hunter dives back into the horde of zombies that the rest of the team left Smoker in.]]
* DyingAlone: Not quite, but Smoker zombifies alone in her bathroom in great pain, begging for Hunter to help her.
* DyingAsYourself: All of the survivors choose to do this in their Not Immune scenarios.
* DysfunctionJunction: It's downplayed, but none of the survivors are good at talking about issues other than killing zombies. It's most evident in ''Now What?'' where Hunter comes back from a month-long unexplained absence and Smoker [[spoiler: [[AngerBornOfWorry blows up at her and blows her off]] when she's mentally begging her to stay.]]
* EnemyWithin: The cured infected suffer relapses to their zombie state under certain conditions. Basically, if someone would have made perfect prey for them (someone alone on the ground for Hunter, someone on a rooftop for Smoker) then they lose control and try to kill them. It usually passes quickly, though.
* EveryoneHasStandards: The survivors ''will not tolerate'' Psychopro flirting with Jockey.
* ExpressiveShirt: Hunter's cat-eared hoodie tends to move on its own, depending on Hunter's mood. The ears in particular perk up and droop noticeably.
* EyeScream: Gangster!Psychopro takes [[spoiler: David]]'s eye.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: When she's about to be overrun by a horde of zombies, Charger does not give an inch, just readies her machete.
--> '''Charger''': "Alright."
* FascinatingEyebrow:
--> '''Hunter's friend''': "Why you got a hole in your sleeve?"
--> '''Hunter''': "[[AccidentalInnuendo Oh, I guess it's a cigarette burn.]]"
--> '''Hunter's friend''': (FascinatingEyebrow)
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Subverted with Smoker - she tends to act and appear rather masculine (to the point where people [[ButchLesbian get to thinking...]]), but she can still cook just fine (although according to Hunter, it may be a bit of an acquired taste). However, her laziness means that she tends to only cook [[ThroughHisStomach when Hunter's around]] or if her team [[TeamChef convinces her to make something]].
* FightingYourFriend: In the Infected Universe, Hunter turns zombie and attacks Smoker.
* FourGirlEnsemble
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** Hunter is Sanguine.
** Charger is Choleric.
** Smoker is Melancholic.
** Jockey is Phlegmatic.
* FreudianSlip:
--> '''Smoker''': "You can't just come home at all hours-I have work in the morning, you know that? Honestly-"
--> '''Hunter''': "Did... you just say this was my home?"
* FromACertainPointOfView: When Mousey asks about the scratches on Smoker's back, she tells her that they're from a stray cat that occasionally comes around and eats her food, instead of from CatGirl Hunter.
* FutureBadass: The [[SoleSurvivor Sole Survivors]] can be seen as this. All of them are considerably more battle-worn than they are in the main Survivor universe, and have been killing zombies for longer.
* GenkiGirl: Hunter is constantly active, related to her interest in Parkour.
* GetAholdOfYourselfMan: Hunter slaps Smoker when she's trying to quit smoking and a JerkAss because of it.
* GoryDiscretionShot: We don't hear Charger telling the other survivors about Botflies. We do hear their reactions:
--> '''Hunter''': "JESUS CHARGER, STOP! I'M NEVER GONNA SLEEP AGAIN!"
--> '''Smoker''': "Jeesum Crow!"
--> '''Jockey''': (shocked silence)
* GroinAttack: Cowboy!Hunter shot a man in the groin at one point, and punches another there when he starts hassling her.
--> '''Cowboy''': "Ain't you a little coarse for a gal?"
--> '''Hunter''': (GroinAttack) "Ain't your balls a little punched for a man?"
--> '''Smoker''': "Another one? You need to stop doing that."
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: [[http://www.ashido.com/temp/HunterSmokerfpregrifffantasy.gif Invoked for laughs]] at how unrealistic many fantasies about female focused QueerRomance works, including SelfFanservice and the whole [[{{AThreesomeIsHot}} "lesbians will totally make an exception for me!"]] idea.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: Jockey with a chainsaw, especially if she's on adrenaline.
* HandicappedBadass: The cured protagonists are all this. Because they're still partly zombies, Charger only has one arm, and it's no good for anything delicate. Smoker lost her tongue and one eye. Hunter's blind and Jockey's very hunchbacked and withered. They're all quite strong and capable of killing people, though.
* HappilyMarried: Charger was, before the apocalypse.
* HeroicBSOD: Jockey gets a pretty bad one after she demolishes her delusions by [[spoiler: shooting zombie David.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: All four of the survivors get a chance to do this in the Sacrifice scenario.
* HiddenDepths:
** Smoker and Jockey are great lovers of music, from the Midnight Riders to showtunes. Hunter, naturally, teases Smoker mercilessly for this. On the other hand, Hunter herself likes some rather embarrassing music...
** Charger's familiar with ''Theatre/TheMusicMan'', which surprises everyone.
* [[HisNameReallyIsBarkeep Her Name Really Is Smoker]]: Hunter and Smoker started out as Rule 63'd hunter and smoker special infected. When they became characters, they kept the titles, and Charger and Jockey were named the same way.
* [[{{HugeGuyTinyGirl}} Huge Girl, Tiny Other Girl]]: Hunter and Smoker, natch.
** Subverted in that Hunter, seemingly a tiny thing, is much heavier than Smoker, as her regular parkour regimen [[CuteBruiser has turned her into almost solid muscle.]]
* TheHyena: Like her infected counterpart, Jockey reacts to almost everything with laughter, even when it's not appropriate.
* ICanChangeMyBeloved: A DeconstructedTrope with each of Smoker's relationships.
** Juan thinks he's being a good boyfriend by trying to fix Smoker's flaws and "flaws", but she's obviously hurt by his criticisms and failure to accept her for who she is.
** Mousey's attempts to "fix" Smoker are mostly meant to feed her ego and fish for compliments from others for her "good deeds", even if she's genuinely concerned about Smoker's well-being.
** Hunter acknowledges Smoker's rough edges and argues with her on certain things, but [[DefiedTrope actively avoids]] trying to force Smoker to change. As a result, their relationship is the healthiest one that Smoker's ever had.
* ICannotSelfTerminate: In the Not Immune scenarios, [[spoiler: Charger]] is the only one willing/able to kill herself. [[spoiler: Charger [[MercyKill Mercy Kills]] the others]].
* IfItsYouItsOkay: The tone of Smoker and Hunter's relationship.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Smoker attempts this with Infected!Hunter, but she's too far gone to listen.
* ImAHumanitarian: SerialKiller!Smoker cooks and eats her victims.
* ImpossiblyTackyClothes: Hunter shows up for a date with Smoker wearing lime green and neon purple. Smoker, understandably, makes her change.
* ImprovisedWeapon: Smoker threatens Infected!Hunter with a pair of scissors. It works about as well as you'd expect, although there is an AlternateUniverse where Smoker kills Hunter with them.
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: This gets exaggerated with [[spoiler: Smoker]]. Her cough is one of the first signs of zombie infection, and the virus works so fast that she's almost entirely a zombie soon after.
* InsistentTerminology: Smoker constantly refers to parkour as parking. She knows how to say it, but likes to annoy Hunter by saying it wrong.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: Cured!Smoker and Hunter. Mousey mistook it for a fight once.
* [[IsThisWhatAngerFeelsLike Is This What Jealousy Feels Like?]] Hunter gets a little jealous of Jockey when she and Smoker start bonding, and has little experience with the feeling.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Mousey frames everything that happens in relation to how it makes ''her'' feel, regardless of the effects on others, to the point that when [[spoiler: Smoker gets stabbed]] her first words are "Why does this keep happening to me?"
* IWillOnlySlowYouDown: When [[spoiler: Smoker]]'s trapped under a car, she forces the others to go on without her, even threatening to shoot herself if they don't ''go''.
* JerkAss: Griffin, Smoker's egotistic co-worker.
** Psychopro. It's amazing that the survivors endured his company for as long as they did. In the end, they [[spoiler: chained him to a lamppost for the horde.]]
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: ''Smoker'', of all people, for the Midnight Riders.
--> '''Smoker''': I LOVE YOU MIDNIGHT RIDERS! WOOOOOOOO!
* LaserGuidedKarma: Psychopro abandons his team to get to the safehouse, only to be jumped by the jockey inside.
* LastRequest: Before Smoker goes to restart the generator in her Sacrifice scenario, she asks Charger to stop Hunter from following her.
* LethalChef: Hunter. "I tried to boil an egg once and I ''burned'' it."
* LonersAreFreaks: Subverted with Smoker; while she prefers to be alone, it's never presented as any kind of character flaw or something that has to be fixed.
* LuminescentBlush: Smoker in any sexual situation, and she ''hates'' it. Hunter of course mocks her for it.
* MagicAntidote: The Cured universe greatly averts this trope. The cure for the Green Flu is a mix of surgical procedures and scientific experimentation that takes a long time to work. It stops the zombies from trying to kill people... most of the time. They relapse to their zombie state if they see something provoking (basically anything they were good at killing as zombies). The military can't do much about the bodies of the mutated special infected, though. Cured specials still look a lot like they did as zombies, just less bloody.
* MamaBear: Just about any version of Charger. She looks out for the rest of her team, whether they're survivors or zombies. Someone else being in danger is a BerserkButton for her in the Cured universe.
* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Again subverted, as Hunter actually likes Smoker ''for'' her introvertedness, and has no desire at all to change her.
* MercyKill: In the Not Immune scenarios, [[spoiler: Charger delivers these to the others, as they're unwilling/too far gone to do it themselves]].
** Charger killed the animals at her zoo when the outbreak hit because no one could take care of them.
* MistakenForGay: Played with. Hunter is bi, and Smoker genuinely doesn't consider herself to be gay, but people tend to make assumptions... which may or may not be true...
* MoodWhiplash: Cured!Jockey goes from celebrating remembering a song to wailing in anguish as the song reminds her of the people she killed as a zombie.
* MoreExpendableThanYou: One of the reasons Smoker decides to sacrifice herself in her Sacrifice scenario is that she "probably only had a few years left anyway."
* MrExposition: The scientist at the beginning of the cured AU explains how the zombies have been doing, what he's trying to accomplish, how their mission is going, etc. It's justified because he's talking into a recorder.
** Another scientist tells the newly cured protagonists about the procedures performed on her and some of the symptoms that the cured will experience.
* MusicForCourage: Employed fairly frequently by Jockey, and on occasion by Smoker (usually with a bit of armtwisting).
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: In the Infected universe, Smoker broadcasts this trope if she kills Hunter in self-defense as she's turning.
* NightmareFetishist: Hunter really likes the idea of being fed upon by Vampire!Smoker.
* NoNameGiven: We don't know David's last name. He's even referred to as "Mr. [blank]"
* NoodleIncident: Smoker got arrested once. She doesn't like talking about it.
** Hunter also seems to like messing with Smoker. For example:
--> '''Smoker''': "How the blazes did you get footsteps on the ceiling?"
--> '''Hunter''': "Well it wasn't easy."
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Hunter, although this comes from her origins as a zombie that tore people apart with her bare hands.
* NotSoStoic: If Hunter's in danger-really in danger, not just a little banged up-Smoker looses her cool really fast.
** Charger is able to hold herself together for the others if Hunter or Smoker dies, but she breaks down if Jockey dies.
* OccidentalOtaku: Holy crap Foxie.
* OddFriendship: Most of the survivors, but especially Hunter/Smoker and Smoker/Jockey.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: In the Survivor universe, Hunter rushes to Smoker to warn her about the zombies to find her [[spoiler: standing over a pile of corpses with a baseball bat]].
** Hunter shows Smoker some of her parkour tricks. The camera stays focused on Smoker, but whatever Hunter was doing was death-defying enough to ''demolish'' Smoker's feigned disinterest.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Jockey's at least 21.
* OneHeadTaller: Smoker with... almost everyone, men and women alike. Also comes from her zombie origins, as Smokers are taller than all other infected.
* OneOfTheBoys: All of Hunter's friends were guys, until they all turned into zombies anyway.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted with the main cast. No one ever comments on how their names are the same as some of the special infected.
* OpenSaysMe: Hunter can't pick locks, but she can bash them open.
* OutOfCharacterIsSeriousBusiness: Smoker's a DeadpanSnarker, Charger is TheStoic, Jockey is a CloudCuckoolander, and Hunter's pretty cocky about the apocalypse. If one of them starts acting radically different, then things are ''really bad''.
** For reference, Charger doesn't lose her cool when she realizes that [[spoiler: the four of them are trapped and going to die]]. The events of [[spoiler: Jockey's Not Immune scenario]] leave her dangerously close to the DespairEventHorizon and showing it.
** Jockey sobers up considerably when things get really bad, and even yells at Charger at one point.
** A downplayed example occurs preinfection. Hunter enters Smoker's apartment through her door, as opposed to her window, because she hurt herself parkouring.
* LeParkour: Hunter has several running buddies for this, and tends to practice all the time, even in public and on people. This hobby led to their meeting in the first place.
* PleaseWakeUp: The infected have some trouble determining that one of their number is dead, not just asleep or wounded.
** SoleSurvivor!Jockey maintains that her friend's corpses are just sleeping.
** Some of Hunter's lines if Smoker dies and vice versa implore the other to wake up/get up.
* [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain Politically Incorrect Anti-Hero]]: Psychopro, oh so much. He doesn't seem to be capable of getting through a sentence without saying some kind of slur against someone.
* PrecisionFStrike: Charger gets a precision ''[[SymbolSwearing something]]'' strike in [[spoiler: Smoker's Not Immune scenario when she realizes that Smoker's becoming a zombie]].
* PuffOfLogic: When it is pointed out that Cured!Smoker can't use an artificial voicebox, she switches to a phone with text-to-speech.
* PunchAWall: Hunter when she gets really mad and frustrated, such as Charger's version of the Sacrifice scenario or Smoker's version of the Not Immune scenario.
* RedOniBlueOni: Hunter and Smoker, as well as Jockey and Charger.
* RuleOfDrama: The survivors encounter [[spoiler: a zombified David]].
* SanitySlippage: When Hunter disappeared for a month, Smoker did not take it well. She all but stopped eating and sleeping until Hunter got back.
* SassyBlackWoman: Subverted with Charger, who's the calmest and most level-headed of the four to the point where Hunter wonders if she had her sense of humor removed.
* ScarsAreForever: Charger has a large scar across her face from an encounter with a crocodile.
** Cowgirl!Smoker has a bunch as well.
* ScrewThisImOutOfHere: Griffin and Sparkles abandon Psychopro to a Jockey at one point. To be fair, they were probably just looking for an excuse.
* SerialKiller: There's an alternate universe where Smoker is one.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Smoker insists that this is the case to Jockey.
* SmokingIsCool: While Smoker might have the right attitude for it, she's physically the weakest of their team.
* SoleSurvivor: We've seen what happens to each of the protagonists if they lose the others.
** Smoker becomes even more abrasive and starts trying to commit [[SuicideByCop Suicide By Zombie.]]
** Hunter [[SurvivorGuilt blames herself for Smoker's death.]] She becomes something of a guide for other packs of survivors.
** Jockey either continues on, pretending that they're all still alive, or stays with the corpses, [[PleaseWakeUp insisting that they're only sleeping.]]
** Charger carries on with another group, but never forgets her friends.
** All of them keep a TragicKeepsake from their friends, like Jockey's pedometer or Smoker's necklace.
* SleepCute: Hunter and Smoker do this a few times. It helps that Hunter has NoSenseOfPersonalSpace.
* TheStoic: Smoker and Charger both put up a tough front.
* StrawMisogynist: A couple of minor antagonists.
* SuddenlyShouting: Jockey when singing a song that calls for this, such as Mother Mother.
* SymbolSwearing: Everyone does this.
* TeamMom: While not exactly lampshaded, Charger does state once that the only children she has are the three in her team. This position is later supported by her [[MamaBear reaction]] to Hunter being attacked. She was also known (before the apocalypse) for [[IncrediblyLamePun charging]] to the defense of her employees if they were in danger, causing them to give her the [[InSeriesNickname nickname "Mother Elephant"]]. Her [[{{Protectorate}} protectiveness]] and [[UnstoppableRage anger]] when roused is also a reference to her zombie origins - as an infected, she charges to the defense of other zombies, and [[GrievousHarmWithABody won't let her victim go until she or they're dead]].
* TearsOfBlood: Happens to Hunter when she starts to turn. Gets upped to EyeScream when Smoker remarks that it looks like her eyes are melting.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Smoker does NOT like Jockey most of the time.
* TemptingFate: Hunter narrowly averts this.
--> '''Hunter''': "If you say "How could this get any worse?" I'm going to have to kill you."
* TherapyIsForTheWeak: Cured!Hunter and Smoker believe this. Charger's not so sure.
* ThereWasADoor: Hunter always enters Smoker's apartment through the window.
* TookALevelInBadass: Charger teaches the rest of the team a lot about using and reloading weapons.
* TooMuchInformation: Psychopro reacts this way when the survivors start discussing their periods. He ends up running off screaming.
--> '''Hunter''': "#$%@, if I'd known it was that easy I would have done it hours ago."
--> '''Charger''': "So immature for a grown man."
--> '''Jockey''': "Wow."
--> '''Smoker''': (smirks)
* TragicKeepsake: Charger's wedding ring.
* TrueCompanions
* {{Tsundere}}: Smoker is ''extremely'' {{Tsundere}}, Hunter is one too to a lesser extent.
* UndyingLoyalty: Even as zombies, Smoker, Hunter, Jockey and Charger stick together. There's a number of endings (and the beginning of the Cured stories) where they [[DiedInYourArmsTonight die (or are sedated) holding one another.]]
* TheUnintelligible: Cured!Smoker's missing her tongue, so she can't pronounce anything. She gets by with text-to-speech, a voicebox (which vanishes in a PuffOfLogic) and a notepad.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Hunter for Smoker.
--> '''Hunter''': (After being badly beaten by a guy she was fighting) "HE @#%@ PUSHED YOU, I JUST"
* VitriolicBestBuds: Hunter and Smoker. "I'm stealing your wallet." "That'll be a neat trick after I snap your neck."
** Hunter and her parkour buddies as well. They dangle each other off roofs by the ankles for fun.
* WallOfText: Charger produces one when asked about bonobos.
* WhenSheSmiles: Smoker.
--> '''Hunter''': "YESS I love getting you to smile, it's like seeing an eclipse or something!"
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Smoker's about 30, but between her smoking and her archaic speech patterns she appears older.
* ZombieInfectee: The premise of the Not Immune storyline is that one of the survivors is [[TitleDrop Not Immune]].
