3Toshihiro Nagoshi (born June 17, 1965) is a video game developer for Creator/{{Sega}} and Creator/{{Atlus}}. His biggest claim to fame is the ''VideoGame/LikeADragon'' series as the founder of Creator/RyuGaGotokuStudio, although his involvement with Sega is long and storied.

5Nagoshi joined Sega shortly after graduating from university with a degree in movie production. He would be assigned to [=AM2=], the development team headed by Yu Suzuki, and work on many of the team's most famous games, including ''VideoGame/VirtuaRacing'' and ''VideoGame/{{Shenmue}}''. It was during his time with [=AM2=] that he would also direct development of his first game, ''VideoGame/DaytonaUSA'', which went on to be a smash hit in arcades.

7Going into UsefulNotes/The2000s, Nagoshi would join Amusement Vision, a development team that specialized in arcade titles. When Sega shifted to third-party development following the commercial failure of the Platform/SegaDreamcast, Amusement Vision would shift its focus to developing games for the Platform/NintendoGamecube. Games that he developed during this time include ''VideoGame/SpikeOut'', ''VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall'' and ''VideoGame/FZeroGX'' -- the latter of which he worked on alongside Creator/ShigeruMiyamoto. Nintendo was so impressed by how ''F-Zero GX'' turned out that they personally called Nagoshi to see the game's source code and figure out how he managed to create yet another smash hit.

9Nagoshi's career would skyrocket to new heights in 2005 with the development and release of the first ''[[VideoGame/Yakuza1 Ryu Ga Gotoku]]'' game (localized as ''Yakuza'' in the West initially, until it was renamed to a direct translation of its Japanese name, ''Like a Dragon''), which was one of the most expensive games he developed. The runaway success of ''Ryu Ga Gotoku'' made Nagoshi a household name in Japanese game development, and the development team that helped to work on the series, [=CS1 R&D=], would rechristen itself in honor of their crowning achievement, ''Ryu ga Gotoku'' Studio.

11Nagoshi's philosophy towards game development emphasizes accessibility, since he is, by his own admission, bad at ''playing'' video games.

13In October 2021 after the release of ''Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania'', Nagoshi and ''Like a Dragon'' series producer Daisuke Sato left Sega and he later joined [=NetEase=] Games, [[StartMyOwn forming his own development team]] Nagoshi Studio. Nagoshi himself cited CreativeDifferences as the reason for his departure from Sega, commenting that the company had been giving him increasing responsibilities in executive and management roles, something which he found creatively unfulfilling, as it reduced his ability to be involved with the more hands-on parts of game development.
