3Karl Malden (born Mladen George Sekulovich; March 22, 1912 – July 1, 2009) was an American actor whose career spanned more than sixty years.

5He is best known for having primarily been a character actor, especially in such classic films as ''Theatre/AStreetcarNamedDesire'' (1951), for which he won the UsefulNotes/AcademyAward for Best Supporting Actor, ''Film/OnTheWaterfront'' (1954), ''Film/{{Pollyanna|1960}}'' (1960), and ''Film/OneEyedJacks'' (1961), although he also played more high-profile roles in films such as ''Film/BabyDoll'' (1956), ''Film/HowTheWestWasWon'' (1962), ''Theatre/{{Gypsy}}'' (1962), and ''Film/{{Patton}}'' (1970). He would later go on to portray Lt. Mike Stone in the primetime television crime drama ''Series/TheStreetsOfSanFrancisco'' (1972–77), and became well-known as a commercial pitchman for American Express Travelers Cheques ("Don't leave home without them!").
