-->-- '''Anthony Ainley'''

[[AlliterativeName Anthony Ainley]] (20 August 1932 – 3 May 2004) was an English actor best known for playing the Master in ''Series/DoctorWho'' during the final decade of its original run. His film career largely consisted of bit parts or small roles in films such as ''Film/YouOnlyLiveTwice'', ''Film/InspectorClouseau'' and ''Film/OhWhatALovelyWar'', though he got to play more substantial supporting roles in his last two films, ''Film/TheBloodOnSatansClaw'' and ''Film/TheLandThatTimeForgot''. His pre-''Doctor Who'' television career included guest appearances on ''[[Series/TheAvengers1960s The Avengers]]'' and ''Series/UpstairsDownstairs''. Ainley's portrayal of the Master is generally regarded as being more over-the-top than that of Creator/RogerDelgado (who had originated the role) with the exception of [[Recap/DoctorWhoS26E4Survival his last televised appearance]] where his performance is more subdued. He played the Master one last time in the video game ''Destiny of the Doctors'' in 1997. Oh, and his dad, actor Henry Ainley, was Creator/JonPertwee’s godfather.

* AwesomeDearBoy: Ainley was a wealthy man who could afford to turn down any role he didn't want. Instead, he spent a lot of his time enjoying himself playing cricket, and did Doctor Who for fun. Creator/ColinBaker has commented that cricket and the Master were the only things Ainley was willing to talk about when they were shooting their episodes together, while according to Creator/EricSaward, Ainley enjoyed answering his phone in character as the Master, then doing his EvilLaugh.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Ainley was offered the chance to reprise the role of the Master in a [[AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho Big Finish Productions audio drama]]. He expressed interest but insisted on script approval, something that not even the actors playing the Doctor get. Thus, the part was recast with Geoffrey Beevers, Ainley's direct predecessor, reprising the role instead.
