Context CompositeCharacter / PowerRangers

Go To

Back before they started adapting Franchise/SuperSentais annual cast change method, we could get one Ranger in Power Rangers representing two or more different characters in Sentai. The franchise's early trend of gender flipping male yellow rangers also tend to give the original yellow's traits to someone else. Overall, the franchise still takes liberties and fuse certain characters anyway if they wish.
----
* Franchise Wide:
** Technically, the Rangers with more than one Ranger identity fall under this trope. Tommy Oliver stands out with five Sentai counterparts: Burai, Kou, Gorou Hoshino, Kyousuke Jinnai (at first), and Asuka. He also indirectly composites Soukichi Banba from Series/JAKQDengekitai (the first White Rangers of their franchises, first Rangers to be later additions to their teams, took over leadership upon their introduction.That is, Tommy technically takes over leadership when introduced as the white Ranger.), Tsuruhime (the White Ranger leader from the start of the season) and Tsuyoshi Kaijo (The BigGood amongst the Rangers).
** As Power Rangers was first conceived as an adaptation of Series/ChoudenshiBioman, the original five Rangers were originally devised as counterparts to the five Biomen.
*** Jason Lee Scott, initially named Victor Lee, was first devised as the counterpart of Shirou Gou. Lasting to early Season 2, his counterparts are Geki and, to a lesser extent, Ryo. Riki is added to the mix when Jason returns to receive the power of the Gold Ranger from Trey of Triforia. He also indirectly takes after Goro Sakurai from Series/JAKQDengekiTai as the Red Ranger who gets demoted from team leader upon the White Ranger's introduction.
*** Zack Taylor was first devised as the counterpart of Shingo Takasugi. Lasting to early Season 2, his counterparts are Goushi and, to a lesser extent, Daigo.
*** Trini Kwan, initially surnamed Crystal, was first devised as the counterpart of Mika Koizumi and Jun Yabuki. Lasting to early Season 2, her counterparts are Boi and, to a lesser extent, Kazu.
*** Billy Cranston was first devised as the counterpart of Ryuuta Nanbara. As a Ranger for the first three seasons, his counterparts are Dan, Shoji and Saizou, sharing the latter with his Alien Ranger counterpart, Cestro. Come Zeo, he and Zordon function as Naoyuki Miura's counterpart, with Billy incorporating Miura's distinction as technical advisor. Upon his return in Cosmic Fury, he takes over for Shou Ronpo as the team's Ranger mentor and for Garu as the primary pilot of the Cosmic Wolf Zord.
*** Kimberly Hart was first devised as the counterpart of Hikaru Katsuragi. Lasting to mid-Season 3, her counterparts are Mei, Rin and Tsuruhime, sharing the latter with Tommy, Kat and their Alien Ranger counterpart, Delphine.
** Succeeding Jason as Red Ranger, Rocky [=DeSantos=] inherits Geki's suit as well as functioning as counterpart for Ryo and Sasuke, sharing the latter with his Alien Ranger counterpart, Aurico. Switching to Blue for Zeo, he becomes the counterpart of Yuuji Mita.
** Succeeding Zack as Black Ranger, Adam Park inherits Goushi's suit as well as functioning as counterpart for Daigo and Jiraiya, sharing the latter with his Alien Ranger counterpart, Corcus. Switching to Green for Zeo and Turbo, he becomes the counterpart of Shouhei Yokkaichi and Minoru Uesugi.
** Succeeding Trini as Yellow Ranger, Aisha Campbell inherits Boi's suit as well as functioning as counterpart for Kazu and Seikai, sharing the latter with her Alien Ranger counterpart, Tideus.
** Succeeding Kimberly as Pink Ranger, Kat Hillard inherits Mei's suit as well as functioning as counterpart for Tsuruhime, Momo Marou and Youkou Yagami. Her ability to transform into a cat brings to mind the Flowery Kunoichi Gang (aka, Hanarangers) from Kakuranger, while her monster form Katastrophe is taken from the same Sentai's Nine-Tailed Fox.
** Taking Aisha's place as Yellow Ranger just in time for Zeo, Tanya Sloan functions as counterpart for Juri Nijou and Natsumi Shinohara.
** Excluding Justin, who becomes Blue Turbo Ranger in Rocky's stead, the remaining four Rangers pass on their role mid-season. While Justin remains on Earth, these successors take take to space for the next season.
*** Succeeding Tommy as Red Ranger, T.J. Johnson starts as the new counterpart for Kyousuke. Switching to Blue for In Space, he becomes the counterpart of Shun Namiki.
*** Succeeding Adam as Green Ranger, Carlos Vallerte starts as the new counterpart for Minoru. Switching to Black for In Space, he becomes the counterpart of Kouichirou Endou. A few episode plots from Megaranger that focused on Kenta (i.e., Always a Chance, Carlos on Call) were repurposed for him in In Space (though at times Carlos seems to act more assertive than TJ, due to Kenta being the SupportingLeader; PR tends to make the Blue Rangers second in command as opposed to the Green or Black Rangers).
*** Succeeding Tanya as Yellow Ranger, Ashley Hammond starts as the new counterpart for Natsumi. Keeping her color for In Space, she becomes the counterpart of Chisato Jougasaki.
*** Succeeding Kat as Pink Ranger, Cassie Chan starts as the new counterpart for Youko. Keeping her color for In Space, she becomes the counterpart of Miku Imamura.
** Lord Zedd stands in for Zyuranger's Dai Satan as Bandora/Rita's master and Dairanger's Gorma XVand by extension, Col. Shadam, whose footage was instead used for Mondo the Magician. as the leader of season 2's monsters. Dai Satan, meanwhile, was adapted as Lokar, one of Rita's minions.
** Series/PowerRangersMysticForce[='=]s Mystic Mother is revealed to be a reformed Rita Repulsa after her being purified by Zordon in the finale for Series/PowerRangersInSpace, making her a composite of Magiel and Bandora. Both of these characters were played in Franchise/SuperSentai by the late Machiko Soga, with the two being unrelated in their respective shows.
** Given the Zordon era consisted of six series, the titular Zordon is an amalgamation of Barza the Wizard and DaizyuzinBarza's footage was once used as the basis of a pre-Time Warp Zordon, though Zordon fills the mentor role normally held by Daizyuzin, the basis of the original Megazord, Master Kaku, Sandayū Momochi and the Three God Generals, Chief Naoyuki Miura, Dappu, and Professor Kubota. Granted, he shared elements of the latter two with Dimitria and Andros, and Daizyuzin's sentai footage was used for the original Megazord.
** As RobotBuddy and Zordon's assistant, Alpha 5 helps fill the role of the aforementioned characters for the first four seasons. It should also be noted that Alpha 5 was originally devised for Bio-Man as the counterpart of Peebo, to the point of reusing the costume. When the time came to adapt Zyuranger, the character was retained but depicted with an original costume.
** Astronema melds together two villains from Megaranger: Dr. Hinelar (TheDragon and TheStarscream, creator of ThePsychoRangers plot) and Shibolena (cyborg DarkMagicalGirl, surrogate daughter of a villain). Her reformed self, Karone, becomes the second Pink Ranger in the next season.
** Heckyl & Snide from Series/PowerRangersDinoCharge are a very interesting combination. His human form (Heckyl) has no direct Kyoryuger counterpart, but he seems inspired by Enter from the previous season Go-Busters. His armored monster form (Snide) uses the movie villain Neo-Geildon, who himself is an upgraded version of the Cursed Armor from Abaranger, itself having a counterpart in Zeltrax from Power Rangers Dino Thunder. The Boom Studios comic and Cosmic Fury sees Heckyl become The Dark Ranger, thus making him a composite of Ferocious Knight D[=/=]Deathryuger (uses his suit and weapon) and Dai-Kun[=/=]Kyoryu Navy (a good guy).
** The villain of Shinkenger vs Go-Onger was Batcheed, whose BackupTwin Babatcheed appeared in Gokaiger. When their appearances were adapted into Samurai and Super Megaforce, they were made into the same character, Professor Cog.
** Although original to RPM, BigBad Venjix uses battle bodies that in Go-onger were the characters Hiramechimedes and Yogoshimacritein. [[spoiler:Late into Beast Morphers, Venjix is revealed to have evolved into Evox, the counterpart of Go-Busters's Messiah.]]
** In Film/ZyudenSentaiKyoryugerVsGobusters, Neo-Grifforzer was a clone of Grifforzer. Series/PowerRangersBeastMorphers adapted him as actually being Goldar resurrected.
* Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers:
** The two Dora Cockatrice monsters were combined into the singular Chunky Chicken. The first one wore a red cap whereas the other one did not; this did not go unnoticed.
** Season 2 sees the core Dinozords upgrade into the Thunderzords. There was no relation between the Guardian Beasts and Mythical Chi Beasts as they came from different series.
** One season 2 MonsterOfTheWeek, Four Head, is a singular being in contrast to its Sentai counterpart, Gattai Shitennõ, a being created from the fusion of the four Gorma Shitennõ.
* Series/PowerRangersTurbo:
** Divatox melded Gynamo's position as the BigBad with Zonnette's design and backstory about
** Justin Stewart shares his role with Naoki, but the idea of a child morphing and growing up into a young adult in the process takes a page from Dairangers Kou.
* Series/PowerRangersInSpace:
** Andros, melds Kenta/Mega Red together with Dr. Kubota (gave the other four Rangers their powers, had prior history with DragonInChief). He's also TheLeader of the team, which was filled by Koichirou/Mega Black in Megaranger.
** Astronema, Ecliptor, and Darkonda are their Japanese counterparts mixed with Adjutant Shiima, Adjutant Boba, and General Giluke respectively.
*** Ecliptor and Astronema's relationship is Grey and Maria with elements of Hinelar's fatherly affection toward Shibolena mixed in their dynamatic.
** The original proposal for the series had Dark Specter, the series equivalent of Megaranger's Javious the First, to be portrayed by Carranger's Emperor Exhaus. After rewrites, Exhaus became Goldgoyle, Turbo's final monster, while Dark Specter was portrayed with the suit of Maligore.
* Series/PowerRangersLostGalaxy:
** Furio, the first enemy general, takes the role of Sanbash and the costume of Dr. Hinelar's final form. Sanbash's costume, not available at the time, was used as a new character named Villamax.
** Trakeena fills the role of Shelinda, but also has traits of Illies (her successful plot against Treacheron, using many of the monsters Illies used). Her accidental OneWingedAngel form in the next seasons Crossover Special was originally the Infernal Dark Hell Beast summoned by Gil. Illies later appeared as a two-episode villain named Hexuba.
** One MonsterOfTheWeek, Mutantrum, is used to trick Leo into releasing The Lights of Orion by disguising himself as Leo's brother Mike. This plot was carried over from Gingaman but did not involve Mutantrum's counterpart, Kemuemon; it was another monster, Gurinji (who appeared later in the season as Spikaka).
* Series/PowerRangersTimeForce:
** Lucas Kendall melds the ex-racer backstory of his Sentai counterpart, Ayase, with the womanizer side of Katie's Sentai counterpart, Domon.
** MonsterOfTheWeek Commandocon not only has his original Timeranger counterpart's role of controlling the Quantasaurus Rex Zord but also shares another monster's role in bringing said Zord to the present. Said monster was Univolt, who appeared earlier as a random monster.
** Another monster by the name of Severax borrows the role of attacking Bio Labs from an unused Timeranger known as Hell's Gate Prisoner Harbel Who still shows up in the episode due to StockFootageFailure..
* Series/PowerRangersWildForce:
** Princess Shayla is a composite of Gaoranger's Priestess Tetomu (TheMentor of the modern Ranger team) and her grandmother, Murasaki (TheMentor of the past Ranger team, had a history with the SixthRanger).
** Master Org supplants Shuten and Ura during their tenures as BigBad, while claiming their combined form with Rasetsu, Senki, as his own; furthermore he takes the roles of Ultimate Org Hyakkimaru (who was a fusion of Orgs in the past in Gaoranger) as well as Lost Highness Rakushaasa (who only appeared in the crossover movie Film/HyakujuuSentaiGaorangerVsSuperSentai) who was considered the true leader of the Highness Duke Orgs and strongest of them all. Although Gaoranger has an Org Master, it was a stone idol and not a character; Master Org is very much in charge of Wild Force's Orgs. His costume is also taken from Dairanger's Gorma XV.
* Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm:
** Cam Watanabe, the Green Samurai Ranger, is a composite of Oboro (snarky techie offspring of the Rangers' Sensei) and Shurikenger (the SixthRanger) from Hurricaneger.
** At the MonsterOfTheWeek level, there's Toxipod. In Hurri, when Kirikirimaishi was defeated by the Rangers, the next monster was his father Girigirigaishi, who came to avenge him. In PRNS, Toxipod returned as Super Toxipod. However, the writers seemed to forget that, as two later multi-monster episodes had Toxipod and Super Toxipod onscreen at once, and neither occasion was Hurricanger footage.
* Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder:
** The multiple users of the Cursed Armor in Abaranger became the singular cyborg henchman Zeltrax. However, the role of the second user of the cursed armor is picked up by Elsa in the last few episodes.
* Series/PowerRangersSPD:
** Sam, the Omega Ranger is a composite of SixthRanger Deka Break and one-shot guest star Hikaru of Dekaranger. The latter grows up to be the former and arrives via TimeTravel.
** Sky Tate, has a similar role as Deka Blue, but takes his backstory of his father dying from a monster attack from Deka Break
** Bridge, meanwhile, melds Deka Green/Sen-Chan with the psychic powers of Z's Sentai Counterpart, Jasmine.
** Mora/Morgana owes as much to Abarangers Rije/Rijewel as she does to Succubus, the villainess her sentai footage comes from.
* Series/PowerRangersOperationOverdrive:
** Tyzonn, the Mercury Ranger, mixes in Bouken Silver (ItsPersonal against the Ashu/Fear Cats), one-shot guest star Ragi (human transformed into dragonman), and Bouken Red (backstory with deaths of his former team).
** Kamdor directly parallels Yami no Yaiba, and Maboroshi no Gekkou (the latter being the BigBad of the third faction and the monster maker and enlarger). Also, Miratrix mostly has Shizuka's role, but her monster form is Gekkou's. Shizuka's monster form becomes a one-off monster earlier in the series.
** The Sentinel Knight is a counterpart to one of the Precious, but has the traits of Aka Red since they're both borderline-Physical Gods who are important players in the MilestoneCelebration crossover.
** Andrew Hartford is based on Mister Voice (TheMentor), Morio Makino (creator of the Rangers' tech) and Kouichi Akashi (The Red Ranger's AdventureArchaeologist father).
* Series/PowerRangersJungleFury:
** RJ takes two roles from Gekiranger. As the Rangers' mentor, he's part Sha-fu. As the accidental WolfMan and later Wolf Ranger, he's part Gou. Sha-fu also has Master Mao as a counterpart as well, but since he dies early on RJ takes the bulk of his role.
* Series/PowerRangersRPM:
** Summer Landsdown's Yellow Ranger designation comes from Saki, but her rich upbringing is shared with Go-onger's Go-on Wings.
** The Generation 3 Chemical Bot uses the suit of Go-Onger's Straw Banki, but his plot, where he disables the male Rangers with his chemicals originated from the Sentai's Shower Banki (whose design made it a no-go for adaptation).
* Series/PowerRangersSamurai:
** Mentor Jii is TheMentor, like his similarly named counterpart in Series/SamuraiSentaiShinkenger. His more-abrasive personality resembles that of Tanba, Kaoru's retainer.
** Deker is directly based on Fuwa Juzo, with his backstory being based on Shinza.
** Mr. Shiba, father of Lauren and Jayden, distills Masataka Shiba (female Red Ranger's father, previous Red Ranger) and Takeru's unnamed father.
* Series/PowerRangersMegaforce:
** The Megaforce Rangers themselves merge the Goseigers and the Gokaigers. They start off as the former in Megaforce, then become the latter in Super Megaforce.
** As TheMentor and provider of the Mega Rangers' powers, Gosei functions as the equivalent of Master Head from Goseiger and Aka Red from Gokaiger.
** As RobotBuddy and assistant to Gosei, Tensou functions as the equivalent of Datas from Goseiger and Navi from Gokaiger, but with his own new, albeit Johnny 5-inspired design.
** Orion shares his role Gai Ikari as the Silver Ranger, but also has traces of both Ahim and Don as he too lost his homeworld to the Armada.
** MonsterOfTheWeek Yuffo shares his appearance role in Goseiger along with the scientist role from an unused monster named Abauta of the Research.
* Series/PowerRangersDinoCharge:
** Tyler's dad, James Navarro, is the Aqua Ranger. His Ranger designation comes from Ramirez, while him being the Red Ranger's previously missing father comes from Dantetsu Kiryuwho becomes the second Kyoryu Silver. And while Ramirez passes his powers to a successor, Yuko Fukui, in the finale, James remains the only Aqua Ranger.
** The other Auxiliary Rangers, Torin (Kyoryu Silver) and Tessai (Kyoryu Gray), also find successors in the finale, Dantetsu Kiryu and Shinya Tsukouchi, respectively. Xenowing and Prince Phillip, meanwhile, remain the Silver and Graphite Rangers throughout the series.
* Film/PowerRangers2017:
** Because Jason, Zack, Trini, Billy, and Kimberly in the original Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers didn't have much outside of their base stereotypes, this would eventually come into play as adding additional backstory would make them more akin to their successors. Many people have noted the set-up with them as a RagtagBunchOfMisfits evokes SixthRanger Tommy's later team in Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder. Additionally, with the casting on an Ludi Lin as Zack and RJ Cyler as Billy, and some personality changes, Zack is an Asian American with a serious personality like the original Zack's immediate successor Adam Park, and Billy's black and his awkwardness is less TVGenius and more, well, awkward, like Ethan James of the aforementioned Dino Thunder team and Noah Carver of Series/PowerRangersMegaforce. Also, Jason's more of a ne'er do well like Conner... let's face it, Movie Jason and Billy straight up are Conner and Ethan from Dino Thunder. [[spoiler:Additionally, Kimberly has a similar backstory to Series/PowerRangersRPM[='=]s Summer Landsdown in being an AlphaBitch before having a HeelRealization and resolving to be better.]]
** Rita's origins are now tied to the Rangers and is an evil Green Ranger like Tommy Oliver was in Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers during the Green With Evil five-parter. Also, as a member of the previous team who betrayed the others, she's got a lot in common with Goseiger's big bad Brajira.
* Series/PowerRangersNinjaSteel:
** Dane is two Rangers' father like Tsumuji, but as the mentor who was thought dead in the past until turning up in the show's present, and the one who fought the BigBad in the previous battle, he's more Yoshitaka.
** Also, Mick wears Tsumuji's Ranger suit in the last battle against Galvanax, but mostly has Tetsunosuke Saika XXII's technician role, with some of Yoshitaka's TricksterMentor qualities thrown in for flavour.
* Series/PowerRangersBeastMorphers:
** MonsterOfTheWeek Railtron not only has the costume of its Go-Busters counterpart but also uses Spannerloid's role of sabotaging the Beast Bots. Spannerloid would later be adapted into Tooltron with a different role.
** The two Danganloids were separate individuals, but were made into the AscendedExtra Vargoyle in Beast Morphers.
* and Cosmic Fury:
** The Dino Fury Rangers were conceived as counterparts to Series/KishiryuSentaiRyusoulger, but come Cosmic Fury, the team utilizes the mecha from Series/UchuSentaiKyuranger with a few color changes:
*** Zayto is both Koh from Ryusoulger as the main Red Ranger, as well as Master Red due to being part of the first team of Dino Fury Rangers. As the Zenith Ranger in Cosmic Fury, he stands in for Shou Ronpo as the primary pilot of the Cosmic Dragon Zord.
*** Javi Garcia is the main Black Ranger in both series, much like Ryusoulger's Bamba and Kyuranger's Champ. But when he and Zayto spar in The Copycat, Javi takes the place of Master Red as Zayto's opponent who utlizes the Dino Knight Armor.
*** Amelia Jones fuses together Asuna and Ui Tatsui; she's the Pink Ranger like the former and a Vlogger like the latter. As the daughter of Santaura, she stands in for [=ToQger's=] Miss Grita. Switching to Red in Cosmic Fury, she stands in for Kyuranger's Lucky.
*** Izzy Garcia is the main Green Ranger like Ryusoulger's Towa and Kyuranger's Hammie and she shares the latter's distinction as the first female Green Ranger to be part of a main team. She also shares her athlete role with another female Green Ranger, Kiramager's Sena. Wishful Thinking works in Ryusoulger's concept of Tyramigo shrinking down to human size by having Izzy transformed into a smaller copy of the T-Rex Champion Zord.
*** Ollie Akana is the main Blue Ranger like Ryusoulger's Melto and Kyuranger's Garu, though him being TheSmartGuy who gets BrainwashedAndCrazy with an Evil Ranger form to boot brings to mind Kyuranger's Naga Rey.
*** Aiyon is the main Gold Ranger much like Ryusoulger's Canalo and Kyuranger's Balance, while he stands in for Spada from the latter Sentai as both the primary pilot of the Cosmic Shark Zord and the team's cook.
*** Fern initially stood for Towa's love interests in Ryusoulger, Sanae Hiiragi (from episodes 5-6) and Saki Koda (from episode 36). Joining the team as the Orange Ranger in Cosmic Fury, she stands in for Kyuranger's Stinger.
** Much like Abaranger's Cursed Armor, Ryusoulger's Gaisoulg is a sentient armor, with the character Nada being its most frequent user throughout the Sentai. Tarrick the Void Knight is a singular individual with a non-sentient armor. He's later transformed against his will into Void King, thus fusing Pricious into his character.
** Santaura the Void Queen inherits her role as the main villainess from Ryusoulger's Eras, while her costume comes from the unadapted Sentai Series/ResshaSentaiToQger's Madame Noir.
** The two Gunjoji brothers were combined into the singular Boomblaster.
** Saden, one of the last generals introduced in the Sentai, turns out to be Master Black, having killed the original and impersonated him. Nulleye, meanwhile, is the real deal.
** The two identical Cerberus Minosaurs are composed into the singular Wolfgang.
** Similarly, the two identical Basilisk Minosaurs are made into the singular Doomsnake.
** Reaghoul uses the suit from Ryusoulger's Necromancer Minosaur, while he supplants the Mimic Minosaur in reviving Brineblast and Wolfgang as spirits.
** Doodrip uses the suit of Kyuranger's Kukuruga, while he supplants the unadapted Eriedrone as the first major villain to confront the Rangers and to control and perish aboard a Mega Squid Drill. He's also responsible for brainwashing Ollie much like the also-unadapted Akyanba did with Naga Rey.
