!!Ala Alba

Meaning the White Wing, Ala Alba is an organization formed by class 3-A to help Negi find his father and journey to the Magic World. The group was named after the group Nagi was a part of, Ala Rubra, which is very famous among mages for their part in ending a massive war twenty years ago and saving the world.

* BadassCrew: Many members are a badass. There's the KungFuWizard teacher, the FieryRedhead with a {{BFS}} and AntiMagic, the winged Shinmei-ryuu swordswoman, the ninja, the kung-fu martial artist, the half-wolf demon boy, just to name the main fighters.
* BattleHarem: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. Several members are Negi's Ministra Magi and some do have a crush on him, but not all of the {{Action Girl}}s are infatuated with Negi.
* CatGirl: In the Magical World arc, some of the girls, namely Asuna, Setsuna, Konoka and Chisame, disguise themselves by putting on cat ears and tails to blend in with the demihuman natives.
* CharacterMagneticTeam: At the beginning of the series, the story mainly focused on Negi, Asuna, and Konoka. As time went on more characters were drawn into the team until it took up about half the class.
* FantasyKitchenSink: The members of team include a few mages-in-training, two {{Half Human Hybrid}}s with demon blood, a robot, and a ghost.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: When they're stranded in the Magical World, the group gets framed as terrorists because of Cosmo Entelecheia's crimes.
* PartyScattering: Right after their arrival at the Gateport of the Magic World, the team is attacked by Fate's group who cause an explosion that leaves Negi and his students scattered over the other world. Negi ends up in a jungle where he meets Chachamaru, Chisame, and Kotaro first. A good part of the arc is Negi trying to find the rest of his missing students and try to free the ones who were sold into slavery.
* TrueCompanions: Although Negi insists they're teacher and students first, everyone in his team get along like close friends and would like Negi to think of them as friends too.
* TwoGirlsToATeam: {{Inverted|Trope}}. Negi and Kotaro are the only boys in a large team where everyone else is a girl.
* YouAreNotAlone: Negi is stubborn about not wanting to involve his students in the dangerous stuff he does because he hates to see others get hurt. Negi's students try to remind him repeatedly that he shouldn't try and do everything alone because they want to be there for him.

Asuna is a girl Negi speaks to on the first day, informing her that her love is going to end unrequited. After this charming start, he's asked by the principal to move into her room and after a bit of initial friction ends up as his protective big sister figure [[{{Tsundere}} among hints of other kinds of affection.]] She is fairly dim, but she's also a hard worker with a strong sense of responsibility. Though intellectually weak, she's physically superhuman even before magic enters the equation, capable of running as fast as a bicycle and having both sight and hearing well above that of a normal human.\

Despite being supposedly ordinary, strange dreams and abilities hint that she is far from it, leaving her something of a mystery for most of the story to the reader.\

Asuna becomes Negi's first Ministra Magi and possesses incredibly rare anti-magic abilities that confuse others due to Asuna being an apparently ordinary middle school student. Her artifact is ''Ensis Exorcizans'' (''Hama no Tsurugi''), the demon-breaking sword. In its initial form, it's a large metal fan with properties suited for exorcism, though as she gains more control over her abilities it gradually gets replaced by her actual artifact, a massive sword with antimagic properties.
----
* AdaptationalBackstoryChange: In the first anime, her Magic Cancel ability comes from a signed contract with a demon rather than an innate ability as the princess of the Magical World.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While she fawns over Takahata, she gets some moments with Ayaka and ''especially'' Setsuna that lean into bisexual territory.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Her mysterious origins, her [[AntiMagic Magic Cancel]] and the fact she didn't start aging normally until a few years ago suggests she might not be a normal human girl. [[spoiler:A flashback implies the Lifemaker could have created Asuna to one day erase the Magic World, but it's never fully explained.]]
* AmbiguouslyRelated: She's revealed to be a member of the Ostian royal bloodline and shares Queen Arika's heterochromia, hinting that they're related. How exactly they are though is never fully explained. Rakan thought they were sisters, but the fact that Asuna is [[OlderThanTheyLook much older than she appears]] makes that very unlikely.
* AmnesiacHero: From early on, it's hinted that Asuna isn't the normal schoolgirl she believes herself to be and has a mysterious past she can't remember.
* AngerBornOfWorry: When a pair of sharks (really Natsumi and Ku Fei) surround Negi and make it look like he's in serious trouble, Asuna races in and knocks them both out (and activates the {{BFS}} in her artifact for the first time). After finding out it was a ruse, Asuna very angrily chides Negi for making her worry like that with tears in her eyes.
* AntiMagic: She has the ability to cancel magic (including any kind of KiManipulation), which is initially assumed to be because of her contract with Negi. Though initially unpredictable, she eventually gets control of this and can extend it as a field, punching out 100% unbreakable seals and dispelling giant falling pillars with a wave of her sword. Magic Cancel is a rare ability, which causes no end of confusion to experts who wonder why a normal person like Asuna can use it. However, the true nature of this ability is actually considerably more complex and even rarer, a throwback to the found of the Ostian dynasty and creator of the Magic World who used the same ability to create it. Properly speaking, it's known as the Magic of Creation and Destruction and is extremely potent.
* ApocalypseMaiden: Asuna is the most important person of the Magic World arc, as Fate needs Asuna's AntiMagic abilities to erase Mundus Magicus and put its inhabitants into a LotusEaterMachine to keep them from disappearing when Mundus Magicus collapses on its own. This is subverted at the end of the arc; [[spoiler:Fate and his group make a HeelFaceTurn, and Asuna channels her powers through a WorldHealingWave instead. She then becomes a BarrierMaiden by being sealed away in order to keep the Mundus Magicus stable until Negi finishes his {{Terraform}} plan.]]
* BadassInDistress: After meeting Fate's team, she gets surrounded and captured by one of Fate's partners, who assumes Asuna's form and joins the group pretending to be her. Asuna was held captive by Fate, with Fate successfully undoing her LaserGuidedAmnesia, to cause her to remember her past and go into a week-long HeroicBSOD.
* BarrierMaiden: Near the conclusion of the story, it's revealed that [[spoiler:she'll be sleeping for 100 years in the Gravekeeper's Palace, serving as the literal cornerstone for the plan to save the Magic World. However, right after she wakes up in the future Chao brings her back to the past. In this new timeline, Asuna can be with her friends while at the same time there's another version of her sealed in the Magic World.]]
* BeautifulAllAlong: Asuna doesn't really put any effort into making herself prettier, but when she tries, she hits it out of the park.
* BerserkButton: She can't stand to feel someone is toying with her feelings. She overreacts a bit when Negi accidentally makes it sound like he just confessed his love to her, and proceeds to beat him up (and Haruna for teasing her about this).
* BestFriend: Her closest friendships are with Konoka, Ayaka, and later Setsuna.
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** Generally a NiceGirl (though she does get angry and violent at [[VitriolicBestBuds Ayaka]] and Negi sometimes), but if you threaten her loved ones, you will dearly regret it.
** Asuna proceeds to beat the crap out of Chigusa Amagasaki with Setsuna and Negi, after Chigusa abducts and threatens Konoka.
** After remembering Gateau's death, Asuna (with BerserkerTears in her eyes) turns her harisen-fan artifact into its {{BFS}} form and would have seriously injured Setsuna in her UnstoppableRage if Setsuna hadn't been skilled enough to dodge and counter Asuna's attack.
* {{BFS}}: Her artifact, Ensis Exorcizans, in its true form is a 190cm long sword and weighs 4kg.
* BigSisterInstinct: Her protectiveness of Negi stems more from a sisterly instinct instead of romantic feelings, not that others are that convinced.
* BlessedWithSuck: Asuna possesses the highly rare ability to [[AntiMagic cancel magic]]. This sounds awesome, but unfortunately, Asuna's power can create and destroy the Magic World. She was thus a frequent target for political parties and was treated like a LivingWeapon. Ala Rubra freed and protected her and some even lost their life protecting her.
* BookDumb: Her grades are so terrible that she is the one with the lowest scores out of all the Baka Rangers.
* BrokenTears: [[spoiler:After waking up in the future, she finds out that, not only are all of her friends and loved ones long dead, but she would have been able to see Ayaka one last time if she hadn't overslept by 30 years. As she hears the last message the elderly Ayaka left behind for her, Asuna breaks down crying.]]
* ButtMonkey: Especially at the start of the series, Asuna is the butt of many jokes (like Negi's [[AccidentalPervert "accidents" that he causes]]). She is getting her clothes blown off, while her crush, Takahata, is present, she gets giant boobs made of air [[ItMakesSenseInContext when Negi wants to help Asuna win a boob comparison contest]], Fate [[AccidentalTickleTorture uses a spell to tickle her]], etc. It eventually tones down in the later arcs, though Asuna still sometimes gets stripped by Negi's sneezes.
* CatchphraseInsult: She likes to call Negi "Stupid Negi" or "Negi Brat" a lot, though she starts toning it down as the manga progresses.
* ChildHater: Asuna starts off with a rather particular dislike of kids, though it dies down when she and Negi learn more about each other. Comes back when Anya appears but again dies down as the two bond.
* ChildhoodFriends: When Ayaka first met her in preschool, Ayaka attacked Asuna out of annoyance at her smart mouth. [[VitriolicBestBuds This defined their relationship ever since]]. Near the end of the manga, Asuna says that meeting Ayaka was "the best luck she ever had" and [[spoiler:Ayaka lived to 115 out of sheer willpower when Asuna had to go away for 100 years.]]
* TheConscience: She is this to Negi. She stays by his side to make sure he doesn't push himself too far or makes rash decisions. When Fate offers to let Negi and his friends return, so long as he doesn't interfere with Fate and his group to destroy the Magic World, she {{Dope Slap}}s Negi and makes him refuse Fate's offer. She also becomes very upset when she finds out that in the period of time they were apart in the Magic World arc, Negi picked up [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Magia Erebea]] and is on his way to become some sort of demon. After Negi does become an immortal demon, Asuna regrets she couldn't stop him from throwing away his humanity.
* CoolBigSis: She acts as a big sister towards Negi, though there are hints of romantic interest.
* CuteLittleFangs: To match her aggressive personality she occasionally has little fanglike teeth.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[MysteriousPast We never find out the details]], but she underwent LaserGuidedAmnesia so that she could forget all that she had been through. What we do know is that it includes being imprisoned in a tower and used as a human weapon.
* DeadGuyJunior: When Asuna with LaserGuidedAmnesia, courtesy of Takahata enters Mahora, she is given a new Japanese surname. She is very likely named after Gateau Kagura Vandenburg, Takahata's master and member of Ala Rubra, who died.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Asuna is Negi's ministra magi and thus responsible for protecting the SquishyWizard while he casts his spells. In response, Negi pushes himself to become stronger so she doesn't have to protect him and put herself in danger. While competing in Mahora Fest's Tournament she loudly declared to Negi that she was plenty powerful enough to protect him. Then she became profoundly embarrassed because she was fighting at that moment and the entire crowd interpreted her declaration as a LoveConfession.
* {{Determinator}}: Brilliantly displayed during her "Death Study" training. Eva drops her off on a mountain with well below freezing temperatures, forcing her to fend for herself and fully expecting her to fail and ask Eva for reprieve by ringing a bell given to her. At seemingly the end of her rope, Eva smugly asks her to relent and admit defeat... Asuna seems to consider it before offering this reply in addition to chucking the bell well into the distance.
-->'''Asuna''': Like '''hell''' I'll give up! I won't give up! ''I won't give up!!'' '''I won't give up!!''' ''' ''I WON'T GIVE UP!!!'' '''
* DiedOnTheirBirthday: In the first anime series, Asuna dies on her 14th birthday. Negi magically undoes it with the help of his class.
* DoesNotKnowHerOwnStrength: Post Mahorafest, even without kanka or getting magical energy from Negi she cracks the pavement when she stomps her foot in irritation. Seems like Setsuna's training paid off.
* DontCallMeSir: After being revealed as a magic princess, Asuna hates to be treated like royalty and gets angry at Setsuna for wanting to be her servant instead of her friend as usual.
* EmotionlessGirl: When she first showed up in Mahora, she was an extremely quiet and inexpressive kid that annoyed Ayaka with her blank expression. At that point, she had a very limited time of actually being a human, instead having been treated as a LivingWeapon for a century or more. In the present, she's rather excitable. [[{{Tsundere}} And irritable.]]
* EmptyShell: When she was a child, she claimed to be 'empty' from having no life experience, social interaction or anything for over a hundred years while being used as some type of weapon.
* EpicFail: Trying to light someone's cigarette and instead setting their beard on fire. Then she tried putting it out with hot tea.
* {{Expy}}: She's stated to embody the "protective" aspect of ''Manga/LoveHina'''s Naru's personality.
* FamilyEyeResemblance: She shares her heterochromia (one blue eye and one green eye) with Arika, the last queen of the Vespertatia Kingdom and Negi's mother. While they are connected by blood, it isn't explained how.
* FieryRedhead: She's a fiery {{Tsundere}} with red hair. This can be attributed to [[VitriolicBestBuds Ayaka's "rivalry" with her]] that started back when they were children.
* FirstNameBasis:
** Asuna and Konoka call each other by their first names and without [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics honorifics]], because they're roommates and best friends.
** Negi is referred to by his given name by everyone, but Asuna is a special case because she doesn't actually use [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics any honorific]] and generally treats him like a child, and not like her teacher. At first it was this way because she couldn't stand him, later on it indicates how close the two of them are.
** During the Kyoto arc, [[FireForgedFriends Setsuna and Asuna get closer as they protect Konoka together]] and fight side by side. At the end of the arc, the two of them call each other by their first names.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: [[spoiler:After she wakes up from sleeping for 130 years, Asuna finds herself alone in a strange time and place with all her friends gone. She at least hoped Negi (having a body like Evangeline's) would still be alive, but he died and after seeing all that her friends did in their lives while she was sleeping she breaks down in tears. However, Evangeline and Chao send her back in time and she reunites with her friends.]]
* {{Foil}}: The story consistently contrasts her and Ayaka. Asuna likes middle-aged men, while Ayaka likes little boys. Asuna is fairly modest when it comes to clothing and hates anything frilly or revealing, in contrast to Ayaka who relishes any chance to dress up whether in a bikini or dress. Finally, their interactions with Negi completely differ. Asuna is initially very prickly though she warms up to him later on, while Ayaka is smitten from the very beginning and rarely changes her stance on him.
* FullFrontalAssault: After getting {{Clothing Damage}}d for the umpteenth time during the AggressiveNegotiations with Goedel. She's been stripped enough that she just ignores it, proves herself immune to DefeatByModesty and presses the attack. The viewers get a [[HandOrObjectUnderwear Godiva sword tassel]]. Although that was actually the fake Asuna aka Shiori.
-->'''Asuna''': Like I care!
* GirlishPigtails: She always ties up her hair into twintails, befitting her {{Tsundere}} personality. When the topic comes up, her friends note that it's rather childish and that she looks better with her hair down.
* GiveHerANormalLife: Ala Rubra wanted her to live a happy, normal life. For that purpose, they gave her amnesia and sent her to Mahora Academy.
* GlacierWaif: She has a relatively average size in the cast (taller than most, but far leaner than the other warriors). Despite that, she carries a {{BFS}} and is nowhere near as fast as the other warriors in the cast.
* GodivaHair: Her hair reaches her waist, which really helps, since being around Negi has a tendency to suddenly leave you without clothing.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Negi accidentally reveals Asuna wears panties with a bear print, right in front of Takamichi.
* HatesWearingDresses: She hates wearing anything frilly, but will relent on certain occasions.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Chapter 284 showed the tail end of a week-long one as a result of Fate forcibly unlocking her lost memories. Fate didn't expect her to come out of it at all.
** She suffered another one [[spoiler:after the fact that she was 130 years in the future and all alone finally sunk in. If Evangeline and Chao hadn't shown up, she probably would have crossed the DespairEventHorizon.]]
* HiddenDepths: Asuna is a surprisingly good artist, though she doesn't get to show it off too often.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: At some point in the past, Asuna tearfully begged a fatally injured Gateau to not die.
-->'''Asuna:''' You can't, Gateau-san! I don't want you to die!
* HumanizingTears: Asuna, who was an EmotionlessGirl at the time, showed her tears for the first time when Gateau died.
* IAmWhatIAm: The most difficult mental issue she has is the duality between who she was as Princess Asuna and who she is now as Asuna Kagurazaka. At the end of the Magic World arc, she's at terms with both sides of herself, proclaiming herself a genuine magic princess [[spoiler:as she fixes all the devastation wrought by Cosmo Entelechia.]]
* IAmWho: Asuna certainly isn't who she believes herself to be and she has a long-forgotten past that is slowly hinted throughout the series. She's actually a princess from the magic world who was used as a human weapon because of her AntiMagic powers.
* IdenticalStranger: She looks very similar to Negi's cousin Nekane, just with orange hair instead of blonde.
* IdiotHair: It fits thanks to her being an IdiotHero.
* IdiotHero: It's pointed out more than once that she far more closely resembles the trope than Negi himself. Kotarō even compares her to Nagi due to her idiocy and determination.
* InelegantBlubbering: When things don't go well with Takahata, Negi bumps into Asuna streaming tears and with snot running out of her nose. After this, she spends a few days moping in Eva's resort before getting over it.
* InformedAttractiveness: Judging by the startled reactions of her friends at the ball and during her 'date' with Takahata, Asuna is apparently supposed to look fairly plain most of the time. However, wherever she dresses up, the only thing different about her are girlier clothes than what she usually wears.
* InstantExpert: Though she's nearly as dim as Negi is brilliant, she picks up fighting and even kanka almost as quickly as he does magic and martial arts. However, in her case it's because she already learned at least some of this stuff when she was a kid. Of course, she ''also'' performed kanka perfectly almost instantly as a child as well, though in that case it was due to being an EmptyShell.
* InterclassFriendship: Asuna was raised in a relatively modest manner, contrasting her [[VitriolicBestBuds Vitriolic Best Bud]] Ayaka who was raised in wealth as the {{Ojou}} of the class. It's revealed later on that Asuna is really a magical princess, putting them at basically the same social standing.
* ItWasAGift: She wears those bells in her hair because they came from Takahata.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: As Negi describes her, Asuna is overbearing, crude and violent, but also an incredibly caring and loyal CoolBigSis.
* JerkassRealization: In the first three episodes, she finds herself increasingly frustrated by Negi and eventually vents her frustrations to Professor Takahata, remarking that ChildProdigy or not, Negi's still a ten-year-old boy who should "stay at home with his parents where he belongs." At that point, Takahata informs her that Negi's parents disappeared when he was a baby, and he was raised by his older sister. Reflecting how Negi had [[BedmateReveal crawled into her bed while she asleep]] and explained to her that he's used to sharing a bed with his sister, Asuna is taken aback.
-->'''Asuna''': I guess I shouldn't have been so hard on him. The little brat's been through enough as it is.
* KickChick: Negi even notes in his class rooster how she has a very powerful kick.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: She doesn't have any memories from before ten years ago after Takahata had her memory sealed on behalf of the dying Gateau Vandenburg.
* LightningGlare: Frequently to Negi after he manages to upset her yet again.
* LikesOlderMen: She has a preference for older guys. Ayaka calls her an "Ojicon" because of it. [[OlderThanTheyLook Technically speaking, it's only guys that look older than her]].
* LongLostRelative: She's part of the Ostian bloodline just like Negi and his mother, though where she fits on the family tree is rather unclear.
* LostOrphanedRoyalty: She was an orphan who was brought to Mahora and taken care of by Takamichi primarily. What she didn't know, or rather was made forget, was that she's a princess of the ancient Ostian royal bloodline descended from no other than the Mage of the Beginning, the creator of the Magic World.
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: Both in the backstory and in the present, Cosmo Entelecheia sought to possess Asuna for her [[AntiMagic Magic Cancel]] power and use her as a tool to erase all of the Magic World and its inhabitants before it collapses.
* MageKiller: Asuna's [[AntiMagic Magic Cancel]] makes her feared by mages, though occasionally she'll team up with another character like Ku Fei after she's shattered their magical barriers.
* MarilynManeuver: Does this once during the ''Pactio'' spell, [[PantyShot since there's wind blowing up]].
* MarkOfTheSupernatural: Right eye green, left eye blue. It's difficult to notice unless she's looking straight at the camera. She's definitely not normal either.
* {{Meido}}: During the TournamentArc, Asuna and Setsuna get pressganged into wearing maid outfits to appeal to the crowd.
* ModestRoyalty: Learning that she's actually a magical princess from another world doesn't change her mannerisms one bit. Treating her like a princess actually annoys her, as Setsuna finds out.
* ModestyShorts: After GoingCommando in a skirt in Kyoto, this is a big issue for her.
* {{Mundangerous}}: Her kicks and PaperFanOfDoom are so powerful that they go straight through [[TheArchmage Evangeline]]'s shields. {{Subverted|Trope}}, as it turns out to be due to Asuna having AntiMagic.
* MysteriousPast: Throughout the manga, it's frequently hinted that Asuna has a past she doesn't remember which involved Ala Rubra and her being saved by them from her life of being used as a weapon for over a century. We never really learn the details.
* MysticalWaif: She fits the archetype pretty well as the Twilight Princess in flashbacks. She had the canonical catatonic personality, the MysteriousPast, the unusual powers, bad guys wanting her, being way OlderThanSheLooks and treated as a weapon/tool instead of a human until the heroes rescued her.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The mean to Konoka's nice and Setsuna's Inbetween, though to Asuna's credit, she does tone down her meanness significantly as the story progresses.
* NoSell: Her Magic Cancel stops ''any'' magic.
* NotAMorningPerson: She is known for being bad at mornings. She gets up early for her job during the week, but sleeps in late on the weekends.
* TheNotLoveInterest: Asuna acts as a unique combination of a CoolBigSis and a {{Tsundere}} towards Negi. While they have a lot of ShipTease, their relationship doesn't develop into a full-blown romance. However, despite Negi admitting he has developed a crush on someone else, he still calls Asuna [[PlatonicLifePartners the most important person to him in a platonic sense]] by the end of the manga.
* OlderSidekick: To Negi. He is only ten and she is a teenager.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Before too much time passes, it's clear that Asuna has a history she doesn't remember and is at least a little older than she appears. She's at least 130 years old and apparently didn't begin to age normally until Ala Rubra brought her to Earth.
* OneHeadTaller: Than Negi. The romance is debatable, but when she hugs him during the Magic World reunion the effect is obvious.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Asuna appears to be a normal schoolgirl who just happens to get involved in magic because of Negi, but her AntiMagic powers and amnesia imply she's much more than that. Turns out she's a princess from the Magic World.
* OutOfFocus: Despite being the main heroine, Asuna barely gets any panel time after she gets separated from Negi at the start of the Magic World arc. Although she does eventually reunite with Negi, she gets almost immediately kidnapped and replaced by an impostor, which leaves her stuck on the sidelines for a chunk of the series. She doesn't go back into focus until the manga is almost over.
* OverlyLongName: Her full name, Asuna Vesperina Theotanasia Entheofushia, notes her status as an imperial princess of the Ostian bloodline.
* PaperFanOfDoom: The weaker form of her pactio artifact is a fan that cancels all summons and dispels some forms of magic.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Her AntiMagic actually caused a FloatingContinent to crash and nearly destroyed the entire Magic World.
* PhlebotinumGirl: The Ostian Kingdom used Asuna as a living weapon because of her AntiMagic abilities. This made Asuna think of herself as less than human until her memories were erased. Furthermore, Cosmo Entelecheia's master plan is to use Asuna's Magic Cancel as a catalyst for a ritual that would destroy the entire magic world.
* PlatonicDeclarationOfLove: She admits her feelings of friendship for [[VitriolicBestBuds Ayaka]], the day before [[spoiler:she went to sleep for 100 years]].
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Negi. They share a deep bond where they treat each other as something between lifelong partners and family. Asuna plays the role of the CoolBigSis who cares for Negi and in return, Negi considers Asuna to be the most important person in his life.
* PluckyGirl: She's very brave and never gives up.
* PointlessBandAid: Her pactio card depicts her with a band aid on her cheek.
* PostKissCatatonia: PlayedForLaughs. After Asuna accidentally [[ItMakesSenseInContext challenged Negi]] to [[TakeMeInstead kiss her first]] before he could kiss Nodoka, Negi overwhelms Asuna and kisses her for two pages (plus a commercial break), making it look like a KissOfDeath after Asuna lost her breath.
* PrecociousCrush: She's had a crush on Takahata for a few years now. She's turned down not necessarily because Takahata doesn't like her (though he clearly doesn't) but because he feels he's unworthy of love in the first place.
* PutOnABus: She disappears from the story for about fifty chapters of the Magic World arc because Cosmo Entelecheia captured her and replaced her with a perfect copy so no one notices.
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: The seemingly ordinary schoolgirl turns out to be a legendary Princess from an entirely different world.
* RedIsHeroic: A heroic FieryRedhead. Fittingly, she's also Baka Red.
* RipVanWinkle: [[spoiler:For Negi's plan to save the magic world to succeed, she has to be put into stasis for a century. She oversleeps by another thirty years and wakes up in a future where everyone she knows, including the immortal Negi, is long dead. Eva and Chao return her back 130 years to a world identical to where she came from mere seconds after her departure. The WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue reveals that her extended sleep was partially caused by a war on Mars in the 22nd century, of which Mana was a participant.]]
* SacredFirstKiss: Initially reluctant to make a Pactio for this reason. Later she claims it doesn't count because it was a Pactio, not a ''real'' kiss. Judging by the way everyone else in the story views Pactios the only one she's fooling is herself.
* SheCleansUpNicely: She receives several reactions from her classmates after seeing her actually taking care of her appearance such as at the ball.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: When Asuna lets her hair down and tries to dress a little more girly than she normally does, Takahata takes notice and remarks to her that she's become pretty.
* ShipperOnDeck: She supports Konoka and Setsuna's relationship and enjoys teasing the latter about it.
* {{Shorttank}}: The headstrong {{Tsundere}} co-star of the manga who is almost always beside the male protagonist. She's rather aggressive, athletic, and her hairstyle is noted to be rather childish. She hates frilly pieces of clothing and doesn't have many girly interests as a whole, but to a Western reader, she would seem just brash instead of an outright tomboy.
* SignatureHeadgear: Asuna always wears small bells on her GirlishPigtails. Her older crush Takamichi gave them to her when she transferred into Mahora.
* SmashSisters: Her and Setsuna. Ever since the Kyoto arc, the two of them became close friends. Setsuna gave Asuna sword lessons and the two worked as a team both at the end of the Mahora Festival Arc and when Ala Alba was split in the Magic World.
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: {{Subverted|Trope}}. When her memories are forcibly returned to her, there's a high risk of her former self as Princess Asuna coming into conflict with her Asuna Kagurazaka self and destroying it. To Fate's surprise, Asuna Kagurazaka is a fully-fledged identity that grew from her original EmotionlessGirl state and it remains in full control despite her dark memories.
* StockLightNovelCalamityPrincess: Likely the UrExample. She wears her red hair in GirlishPigtails, is a sweet {{Tsundere}} who warms to Negi after his bad first impression, and [[ShipTease might be]] a main love interest--if [[ChasteHero Negi]] weren't ObliviousToLove. Asuna has superhuman physical traits and starts off UnskilledButStrong. As part of her [[AMagicContractComesWithAKiss pactio]] with Negi, she receives the [[{{BFS}} Ensis Exorcizans]], which posesses offensive AntiMagic to complement her own AntiMagic and the YinYangBomb ability she learns. She is [[ReallyRoyaltyReveal revealed to be a princess of the Kingdom of Ostia,]] known as [[RedBaron the Imperial Princess of Twilight]]. She inherited the [[PersonOfMassDestruction Magic of Creation and Destruction]] from her ancestor the [[PhysicalGod Mage]] of [[TheMaker the Beginning]], who wants to use it to [[DestroyerDeity destroy]] and [[LotusEaterMachine replace]] the [[MagicalLand Magical World]].
* SuperHearing: She managed to clearly hear the conversation Eva and Setsuna were having in the ring even though she was in the sidelines of a noisy arena during the Mahora Festival's TournamentArc.
* SuperpowerLottery: She has a combination of abilities that make her nigh unstoppable and basically the ideal pactio partner. First, she's superhuman without using any magical abilities and has SuperSenses, which all improve with training. Next, she has a perfect form of the already incredibly rare [[AntiMagic Magic Cancel]] ability, leaving her able to ignore any kind of magical attack and any energy blast ki attacks, meaning you need to overpower her physically, and she can also channel the antimagic through her sword, which possesses its own AntiMagic. Then to counter that weakness she also possesses kanka, which allows her to draw in magical energy from around her and combine it with her own internal energy to explosively increase her physical abilities and give her resistance to numerous effects from cold to poison as well as other abilities that are never elaborated on. All in all, this set of abilities leaves her the only one who can apparently keep up with Negi by the end.
* SuperSenses: Asuna was the only one to see the eraser momentarily floating above Negi's head despite the entire class looking at Negi at the time in the first chapter.
* SuperSpeed: Without using any magic she can run as fast as a professional bike.
* TeacherStudentRomance: Has a crush on Takahata-sensei. Maybe on Negi, too, though she never really viewed him as a teacher.
* TomatoInTheMirror: Asuna thinks she's a normal girl who got involved with a magic teacher, but she was merely made forget about her past. Not only is she related to magic, she's flat out a magical princess from another dimension.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Asuna is the plain and tomboyish "bad girl" of the class, while Ayaka is the beautiful and girly leader of Class 3-A.
* TomboyPrincess: She didn't develop her tomboyish traits until after she forgot her life as a princess. Once she learns of her origins, she keeps her same personality.
* TookALevelInBadass: Her first level in badass was her pactio, her second was in learning kanka and finally after entering the magical world her growth rate skyrocketed due to subconsciously remembering how to fight and ended up about on par with Setsuna before being captured.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Flashbacks show that Asuna originally was a smart-mouthed EmotionlessGirl, but frequent, violent interactions with Ayaka turned her into the cheerful FieryRedhead {{Tsundere}} of today.
* TookALevelInKindness: Asuna starts out as fairly aggressive and disagreeable, even towards Konoka. Asuna slackens her dislike of kids as she grows closer to Negi and even makes [[DeclarationOfProtection vows to protect him]]. She overcomes a lot of her negative traits and becomes a CoolBigSis not only to Negi but to other girls as well. By the end of the story, she has become far more kind and understanding, especially towards Negi.
* TownGirls: The Neither. Asuna has a girlier style and behavior than Setsuna, but is still a brash ActionGirl who comes across as tomboyish when compared to the girly Konoka.
* TraumaButton: Remembering Gateau's death sent Asuna into an UnstoppableRage. She only calmed down after Setsuna snapped her back to reality and Asuna repressed the memory once again.
* {{Tsundere}}: Closer to a Sweet type. Asuna is friendly and laidback, but she becomes overly violent around Negi and Ayaka. In Negi's case, it's usually AngerBornOfWorry (excluding when he [[AccidentalPervert acts like a pervert]] or sounds like TheCasanova). This is also shown in her character design, which sports Grade S ZettaiRyouiki and twintails.
* UnskilledButStrong: In sheer specs, she's both quite powerful and fast, but isn't a trained fighter like Kaede or Setsuna. Thus, by the early parts of the Magic World, she appears to be almost on par with Setsuna, supposedly the strongest of Negi's ministra and a skilled shinmeiryu swordsman, simply by virtue of sheer speed and power. By the ''end'' of the Magic World arc, she appears to be strong enough to actually work as Negi's partner while again showing no real sign of technique. AntiMagic, of course, adds a great deal of utility to certain possible fights.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She constantly fights with Ayaka but deep down she cares for her deeply, and admits that Ayaka was one of the best things to happen to her.
* WouldHurtAChild: Zigzagged, she can and will hurt Negi, though he's strong enough that it's seldom an issue. When she confronts the mage that cast an illusion that forced her to fight her beloved Takahata, she's clearly ready to beat the snot out of them until their hat falls off and reveals that they're probably just starting school and Asuna's violent intent completely vanishes.
* YinYangBomb: Since she was a child, young Asuna was able to use Kankaho - the conjoining of opposite forces. The Yin stands for ki or women; the Yang stands for mana or men. By combining ki and mana, Asuna combines her powers with Negi's.
* YouCantFightFate: In the first anime's alternate story, Asuna was doomed to die on her 14th birthday due to a DealWithTheDevil so the demons would stop following her and bringing destruction wherever she went. Nagi attempted to save her and was promptly crushed under a bridge. She has to die and comes back in time to break the deal.

Setsuna is a swordsman and exorcist who was friends with Konoka when they were both young. However, she was also supposed to be her bodyguard and after failing to protect her she started to grow distant from Konoka, believing she could guard her better from the shadows. As such, the relationship between them starts strained and Setsuna tends to be very quiet and aloof from the rest of the cast. However, after the relationship between them is mended she starts becoming friends [[ShipTease and possibly more]] with Konoka once more, as well as getting along quite well with Asuna.\
\
Setsuna practices the Shinmeiryuu sword style, a set of techniques designed to allow practitioners to combat demons and spirits. She herself is [[HalfHumanHybrid half]] youkai and an outcast of the Tengu tribe, who feared her white wings, implied to be due to albinism. Though she has a complex about revealing her wings and is further rarely able to do so in public, they give her the ability to fly and are quite strong in combat.\
\
Further, she pactios with Negi early on, granting her the artifact ''Sica Shishikushiro'', a wakizashi (short sword) that can have up to 16 flying duplicates using her mental power. Her second artifact, ''Takemikazuchi'', is a sword which can grow in size and become electrified when Setsuna's partner charges the blade with mana.
----
* AesopAmnesia: Setsuna has to learn over and over that it's okay for her to both want to be happy and to want to protect Konoka. She learns it at the end of the Kyoto arc, during the Mahorafest tournament, gets an EvilCounterpart that makes her angst about it again and post-Magic World she ''still'' doesn't get it.
* AffectionateNickname: Konoka calls her Secchan.
* AlbinosAreFreaks: She was exiled by her home and family due to her albinism being seen as an ill omen. She used contacts and hair dye to hide it, but her white wings give away her true nature to Evangeline.
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''etsuna '''S'''akurazaki.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: According to Evangeline, Setsuna was driven out of her hometown because the crow demons see Setsuna's white wings as an ill omen.
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Setsuna starts the series as this, but whenever Konoka butts in, this image completely vanishes.
* AmbiguouslyBi: It's no secret that she's in love with Konoka, but she also admits that Negi's older alter ego made her heart skip a beat.
* AncestralWeapon: Her nodachi Yuunagi was passed down to her from Konoka's father, Eishun Konoe.
* ArcHero: A good part of the Kyoto arc is devoted to Setsuna's CharacterDevelopment and focus, taking the role of the third most prominent main character after Negi and Asuna.
* ArrowCatch: Setsuna catches several darts Tsukuyomi fired at her and Konoka during the Kyoto trip.
* BadassAdorable: She's one of the top three or four fighters in the group, but contrasting the tall and imposing Kaede she's small and waifish.
* BadassInANiceSuit: During the ball, she wears a nice suit rather than a dress. When it's pointed out, she says it's easier to move in. A valid concern at the time.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Konoka, Negi and Asuna are the first people who befriended Setsuna. They even complimented her white wings, which were the reason the demon crow tribe exiled her. For those reasons, Setsuna protects Konoka with her life and will always come to aid Negi and Asuna.
* BestFriend: Both Konoka and Asuna's. The feelings are mutual.
* {{BFS}}: Setsuna's weapon as a Shinmeiryuu swordswoman, Yuunagi, is a nodachi sword that is at least as long as she is. Takemikazuchi can also grow into a huge sword, depending on how much mana is used.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: She fooled everyone that didn't know her while in her male period clothes during her NotADate with Konoka at the cinema town. Plus, they ''did'' [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer make her look fetching]].
* TheBigDamnKiss: Her Pactio with Konoka. According to Chamo they even broke the length record.
* BigWhat: PlayedForLaughs. When Rakan revealed his new name for the ''[[SwordBeam Zanmaken: Ni No Tachi]]'' [[ShipperOnDeck (In-Celebration-Of-My-First-Kiss-With-Ojou-Sama Special)]], she bellowed one out of embarrassment.
* BlowYouAway: Setsuna has access to several Shinmeiryuu techniques that utilize wind.
* BodyguardCrush: Konoka's father asked Setsuna to protect his daughter. Since Setsuna is so devoted to Konoka, she takes the task to heart. As early as Kyoto arc, the romance starts getting teased at.
* BrokenTears: Near the end of the manga, Setsuna breaks down in tears after [[spoiler:she learns from Albireo that Asuna will be sealed for 100 years]].
* ButNowIMustGo: At the end of the Kyoto arc, she tries to run away after revealing herself as a half-crow demon to Negi and co., but gets a lecture from Negi and decides to stay by Konoka's side.
* CantBatheWithoutAWeapon: She bathes with her demon-hunting sword.
* CatGirl: Her Pactio with Konoka changes her into a maid outfit plus cat ears.
* TheChampion: Konoka's champion, willing to go to any length to keep her safe.
* CharacterDevelopment: Setsuna starts off the series a super serious warrior with only Konoka's protection in mind (and from a distance at that). She learns to open up to others and by the end of the series she's seen socializing with many of her classmates.
* ChekhovsGunman: Akamatsu kept her OutOfFocus until the [[ClassTrip Kyoto arc]]; Negi once referred to her as one of the students he'd like to get to know better. Needless to say, she becomes one of Ala Alba's most trusted fighters.
* CherryBlossomGirl: Setsuna is a swordswoman, whose family name contains Sakura (桜), her attacks sometimes have a cherry blossom theme and she initially gives off the impression of a YamatoNadeshiko, though she is actually tomboyish and her quiet and reserved demeanor quickly cracks once she starts interacting with Konoka and Asuna.
* CombatPragmatist: Setsuna has no intention to fight "fair" when she's serious. In Kyoto, she goes for a GroinAttack, when she finds Negi "spying" on her. During the SchoolFestival, she attacks Chao unannounced and grabs her arm, which would have immediately ended the fight, if Chao hadn't had [[TimeMaster a way to escape]].
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: In one chapter, Setsuna worries how she could possibly support Konoka with just a part-time job when she isn't able to make a living with her sword (since she has no other notable qualifications), conveniently forgetting that Konoka comes from an extremely wealthy family, and wouldn't have to earn a living.
* TheComicallySerious: Early in the series, her deadpan attitude comes off as funny in comical situations. It stops once she becomes more relaxed and easily flustered. She also overreacts a bit when it comes to worrying about Konoka.
* CoolSword: Setsuna's artifact, Takemikazuchi, is named after a Shinto god of thunder and the sword. Fittingly, it will be infused with lightning and grow in size if it's fueled with mana.
* CovertPervert: Setsuna sometimes surprises ''herself'' with how perverted her subconscious is. Case in point, her [[LotusEaterMachine ideal dream world]] has Konoka wearing a NakedApron. Later, she daydreams about her future with Konoka, which leads to her delusion of her best possible future: finally having sex with Konoka. Eva [[LampshadeHanging points out]] Setsuna's fantasies get out of control like Chachamaru's.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Setsuna spent most of her life training herself in the Shinmeiryuu for the sake of protecting Konoka. The result is that she's one of the best swordswomen of the style, but there's nothing else she's particularly good at, which makes her feel pretty useless when there isn't any threat for her to fight.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Black hair paired with black eyes. Although, it's implied they're fake and she's actually an albino.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was exiled from her tribe due to her pure-white wings, which were considered to be a bad omen as she was born into the crow tribe of demons.
* DatePeepers: She hid in the shadows and watched Negi's practice date with Asuna, though mostly because she tagged along with Konoka, who really wanted to witness it. Also watched Negi and Nodoka's date and had to interfere when Nodoka accidentally activated the WorldTree's wishing power.
* DeathGlare: Setsuna will give a good one of these to anyone who threatens Konoka.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Setsuna kept her distance from Konoka after they both started attending Mahora to protect her mistress and friend from the shadows. This all changes during the Kyoto trip, which forces Setsuna to interact with Konoka directly. She also becomes FireForgedFriends with Asuna and Negi at that time and her cold demeanor begins to soften quickly.
* DemonSlaying: Setsuna's style of combat was developed specifically to exorcise demons by targeting them instead of the person they were inhabiting.
* DistractedByTheSexy: In the Von Herman arc, Setsuna is easily captured by one of the {{Slime Girl}}s because [[ShapeshiftingSeducer it took the form of a stark naked Konoka]].
* DualWielding: She occasionally uses the massive Yuunagi in one hand and either its scabbard or Sica Shishikushiro on the other.
* EndearinglyDorky: She tries to keep her cool to fulfill her duties as a bodyguard, but whenever Konoka is sweet to her or flirts with her ([[TheTease purposely to see Setsuna's reaction]]), Setsuna becomes a blushing dork.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Besides being paired off with Konoka and getting Tsukuyomi's [[PsychoLesbian psychotic attraction]], Setsuna gains the admiration of many girls while wearing a {{Bifauxnen}} outfit.
* FailureKnight: During several years, she decided to protect Konoka from afar without speaking a word to her due to feeling ashamed of her failure to save Konoka from almost drowning when they were kids. Setsuna never understood that all Konoka wanted was to be friends with her again.
* FantasticArousal: She appears to consider grooming her wings an intimate act, though since she uses them as shields or weapons they must be fairly insensitive.
* FirstFriend: She and Konoka are this to each other. There weren't any kids for Konoka to play with at her mansion in the mountains, so she was happy when the Shinmei-ryuu brought Setsuna because she finally got herself a friend.
* FirstNameBasis:
** Konoka and Setsuna are ChildhoodFriends, and as they grew closer together, Setsuna stopped calling her "ojou-sama" and simply called her "Kono-chan", just as Konoka called Setsuna "Secchan". After Konoka almost drowned and Setsuna decided to keep her distance and train harder, she only used formal titles for Konoka. During the Kyoto arc, the two get closer again and Setsuna is slowly getting back to calling her mistress by her given name. She even calls Konoka "Kono-chan" again privately.
** During the Kyoto arc, [[FireForgedFriends Setsuna and Asuna get closer as they protect Konoka together]] and fight side by side. At the end of the arc, the two of them call each other by their first names.
* FlechetteStorm: Her artifact, Sica Shishikushiro, can be summoned as 16 flying daggers to attack a target with.
* FreakinessShame: She's ashamed of her white wings, which the crow demon tribe believe means she's a sign of ill omen. Her friends tell her the beautiful white wings make her look like an angel and she relaxes about it in front of them, though Eva shows it's still a bit of a sore spot.
-->'''Setsuna:''' This is my true form. I'm a monster, just like them. Don't misunderstand, my desire to protect Ojou-sama is real! I've just kept this a secret... because I was afraid she would hate me in this ugly form...\
'''Asuna:''' What are you talking about? I think they're cool!
* HalfHumanHybrid: A half crow demon.
* HatesSmallTalk: Her profile mentions "chatting" as one of her dislikes and she doesn't socialize much with the class, though she gets over this later on in the series and has discussions with many of her classmates about their futures.
* HerOwnWorstEnemy: The only thing that causes Setsuna to be easily overpowered by others is her mistaken belief that she cannot be happy with Konoka and her friends without becoming weak and useless. When her friends help her discard those senseless doubts, Setsuna can beat Eva and Tsukuyomi without much problem.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Due to feeling she isn't strong enough to properly protect Konoka, Setsuna has some serious self-worth issues and tends to beat herself up every time she feels she has failed as a warrior, just like when Tsukuyomi nearly defeats her. She also only views herself as a lowly servant (which is why she never attempted to learn techniques above her standing), and Konoka needs to remind Setsuna that she is her very important childhood friend and protector. Even then, she laments she doesn't have any other qualification besides being Konoka's guard, which is why she worries about her [[NoPlaceForAWarrior place in the world when there is no conflict for her to fight for.]]
* HiddenDepths: Setsuna thinks she doesn't have any notable skills besides being a warrior, but the ending hints that she's actually a really good pilot.
* HideYourOtherness: On top of normally keeping her wings hidden, she is implied to dye her hair and wear contacts to hide the fact that she's albino. The former is for the sake of the masquerade, while the latter is due to self-image issues (white wings were believed to be be an ill omen in her tribe and [[ParentalAbandonment she was cast out by her family]] as a result).
* HiredHelpAsFamily: Setsuna is an abandoned crow demon child who was picked up by Eishun Konoe and brought up in the Konoe estate where she was trained in the Shinmei-ryuu. When they were kids, Eishun's daughter Konoka befriended Setsuna, but after an incident where both Konoka and Setsuna fell into a river while they were playing, Setsuna made a vow to become strong enough to protect Konoka and became too busy with training to spend time with Konoka. Years later, Setsuna was sent by Eishun to Mahora Academy to serve as Konoka's personal bodyguard and Setsuna protected her from the shadows. After the Kyoto arc, they amend their bond and hang out like friends like they did in their childhood. [[spoiler:When they become adults, it's all but stated they get married.]]
* HunterOfHerOwnKind: While she is a half demon herself, Setsuna uses a style of combat that was developed specifically to battle demons.
* IOweYouMyLife: She's eternally grateful to both the Aoyama and Konoe family for taking her in and training her after she was cast out by the demon crow tribe.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Setsuna admits to feeling some attraction towards teenaged Negi, but is pretty clearly a lesbian paired off with Konoka and expressing some attraction towards Asuna.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Shinmeiryuu-style, which allows her to cut twenty-foot balls of solid ice and a HumongousMecha in half.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Near the end of the manga, she makes Asuna cry by acting like a servant instead of as one of Asuna's closest friends after Asuna is revealed to be a princess. Although, the reaction was exaggerated to make Setsuna cut it out ''right this instant'' and Konoka can tell Asuna is playing Setsuna like a fiddle.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Setsuna doesn't believe that she, a lowly swordswoman exiled from the crow demon tribe, will ever be on equal terms with a rich lady with great magical power like Konoka. This despite the fact Konoka clearly wants them to become closer and has already reassured Setsuna is good enough to be her partner, more than once.
* KiManipulation: Setsuna is, along with Kaede and Kotarō, the most skilled ki user of the group. She can use a variety of [[UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}} Eastern Magic]] mysteries which rely on ki, she strengthens both her body and her sword with ki, and turns the latter into an AbsurdlySharpBlade that can easily [[CleanCut cut through stone like butter]]. She can also infuse her sword with [[ShockAndAwe lightning]] and produce sharp {{Razor Wind}}s with it.
* LadyAndKnight: Setsuna is the honorable White Knight who fights for the sake of her adored Bright Lady Konoka. Asuna directly compares Setsuna to a KnightInShiningArmor protecting a princess, to Setsuna's embarrassment.
* LadyOfWar: At her best, she looks very graceful while she uses her sword.
* LettingHerHairDown: She starts to stop wearing her hair in a {{Samurai}} style side-pony tail in the later chapters once she starts growing out of her intensely serious, near-deadpan demeanor.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Starts out as a loner FailureKnight, but eventually opens up and becomes close friends with Asuna and Negi.
* LuminescentBlush: Whenever the conversation turns to her relationship with Konoka, she goes bright pink.
* LustObject: During her first appearance, Tsukuyomi only seemed to have a small crush on Setsuna. Once they meet again in the Magic World, Tsukuyomi got it ''bad'' for Setsuna and sexually assaults her during their duel.
* MagicKnight: Chamo calls Setsuna by the trope name after he sees her using spell tags to form a defense. Setsuna mostly relies on her KiManipulation and [[UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}} Eastern Magic,]] like charms and shikigami (which also rely on ki). She doesn't actually utilize Negi's mana, as mana and ki are conflicting sources and Setsuna hasn't learned Kanka.
* MagicPants: Appears to go between releasing her wings by [[SexyBacklessOutfit lifting the back of her shirt]] to having them appear directly through the cloth without tearing.
* MarriedToTheJob: She's very dedicated to her job as a bodyguard and seems to be unable to think of herself as something more than that, which usually makes it hard for her and Konoka to have a normal relationship.
* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: The masculine to Konoka's feminine. Whenever the two dress up, Setsuna wears a suit while Konoka wears a dress.
* MasterSwordswoman: Setsuna is a trained Shinmeiryuu swordswoman and she is known as one of the four Martial Arts Masters of the class. She later obtains a sword that is named after a sword god.
* {{Meido}}: During the TournamentArc, Setsuna and Asuna get pressganged into wearing maid outfits to appeal to the crowd. Also, her outfit from her Pactio with Konoka.
* MindControlEyes: During her BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind.
* ModestyShorts: She wears cycling shorts under her skirt.
* MyGreatestFailure: When they were children, Konoka fell into a river and nearly drowned. Setsuna tried to save Konoka, but failed and an adult had to save the both of them. After this incident, Setsuna distanced herself from Konoka and it wasn't until Konoka was in imminent danger during the Kyoto trip, when they were able to reconnect.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The inbetween to Konoka's nice and Asuna's mean. She's not impossibly nice like Konoka but nowhere near as mean as Asuna, as she prefers to keep to herself.
* NoPlaceForAWarrior: Setsuna doesn't have any good qualifications besides her skill with the sword and thinks that she is kind of useless after peace is established, especially compared to her classmates who have already figured out their future career choices.
-->'''Setsuna:''' In battle, I had felt a firm bond with everyone else. But now, I get the feeling that Asuna-san and Negi-sensei are steadily moving ahead. It makes me hate how small I am. \
'''Eva:''' Heh, heh. Well, you are absolutely the soldier type, after all. That's just how a warrior in peace time is.
* NoSocialSkills: She's rather socially dense, largely as a result of her having very strong ideas regarding social class and low self-esteem. It's nearly impossible for Setsuna to allow herself to act like others' equal, even those who accept her as a close friend, and prefers to maintain some distance by being overly polite. While most people don't seem to be bothered by her formality, those with a perceived higher status like Konoka and later Asuna tend to get the princess treatment, which they hate.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Setsuna is usually fairly distanced from the class and aloof, but when Chao reveals for the second time that she's an alien from Mars, she gives her a DopeSlap [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine with a fan]]. Ako points out how weird that was for Setsuna.
* OppositesAttract: Setsuna is disciplined, very formal and easily embarrassed, in contrast with Konoka who is carefree, bubbly and likes to tease.
* ParryingBullets: Or any projectile. Trained Shinmeiryuu can parry any projectile coming at them.
* PerpetualMolt: Setsuna always leaves a dramatic shower of feathers behind whenever she spreads her wings.
* ThePioneer: [[spoiler:According to the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue, she became one of the most famous first-generation pilots of the space age.]]
* PlayboyBunny: During the early Mahorafest arc, she gets dragged into a playboy bunny outfit. Chao snickers at her when she tries to use a cool line.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: While she's normally wholeheartedly devoted to Konoka, Setsuna practically worships any privileged linage. The moment she learns her close friend Asuna is the princess of an ancient royal bloodline from the Magic World, Setsuna starts shamelessly acting like a total bootlicker around her, to the point she comes off as annoying. Asuna snaps at Setsuna for acting like a servant to someone other than Konoka, who is supposed to be her only princess. Konoka then points out that Setsuna ''loves'' serving a lord, the more distinguished the better. Asuna finds that a tiresome way to live.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She is considered beautiful because of her incredibly pale skin and raven-black hair. However, it's implied that she actually has white hair.
* RazorWind: Zankuusen is a ranged sword sweep that hits the enemy with the shockwave Setsuna creates.
* RescueRomance: Or at least Rescue Friendship at first. Setsuna is forced to become very active during the Kyoto arc to protect Konoka, but that lets her bond with Konoka again.
* SamuraiPonytail: She keeps her hair in a {{Samurai}} style side-ponytail, shaped like a single wing. This highlights her status as a strong warrior with samurai traits. She lets her hair down when she starts to loosen up later.
* {{Sarashi}}: As standard for Shinmeiryuu swordswomen, Setsuna binds her chest with bandages instead of wearing a bra.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: She is almost always seen wearing her school uniform.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: In her BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind with Evangeline, Setsuna is wearing a kimono with backless top. Setsuna says these are the traditional clothes of her people, the crow demon tribe.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: During the Kyoto arc, Setsuna has no problem with FullFrontalAssault because she's solely focused on protecting Konoka. Over the course of the manga, it gets gradually subverted as Setsuna opening up emotionally causes her to become self-conscious and more easily flustered. By the time of the Magic World arc, Setsuna is now vulnerable to DefeatByModesty, which she finds disgraceful for a warrior.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Setsuna never makes the effort to make herself prettier, but when Konoka starts dressing her up, Negi and Asuna tell her how pretty she is.
* ShockAndAwe:
** Setsuna can infuse her attacks with lightning with Shinmeiryuu techniques like Raimeiken, and she once tried to trap Chao in an electrified cage created with Sica Shishikushiro.
** Her second artifact, Takemikazuchi, is a sword that becomes electrified when it's charged with mana.
* SlipknotPonytail: When Chao wants to show that Setsuna can't match her, she casually yanks off her hair band before Setsuna even notices.
* SmashSisters: Her and Asuna. Ever since the Kyoto arc, the two of them became close friends. Setsuna gave Asuna sword lessons and the two worked as a team both at the end of the Mahora Festival Arc and when Ala Alba was split in the Magic World.
* TheStoic: Initially, but Konoka and Asuna get her to open up to others.
* SubordinateExcuse: Setsuna adores Konoka above anything, but she doesn't believe she can ever be by her side as something more than a humble servant.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She tries to show herself as a cold and levelheaded swordswoman, but she is actually very kind and caring. Konoka knows it and usually tries to bring out her warmer side.
* SuperDeformed: Setsuna can summon small deformed Shikigami copies of herself, who allow her to communicate with others from a distance and spy for her.
* SuperSenses: Setsuna's Ki allows her to at least triple her senses.
* SwordAndSorcerer:
** Subverted with Negi as her magister. He does not stay a SquishyWizard and becomes a KungFuWizard.
** Played straight with Konoka. Although Setsuna would also count as a MagicKnight, since she is using Eastern Magic.
* TakeAThirdOption: When Evangeline gives Setsuna a SadisticChoice - live a normal happy life as a human or turn back into the cold swordswoman she was before - she chooses both. Setsuna interpreted this as a SecretTestOfCharacter where she was simply reminded by Eva to not become too relaxed and where not taking the SadisticChoice was the actual answer. Eva firmly denies this, though after Setsuna keeps thanking her for the lesson, [[SureLetsGoWithThat she just goes along with Setsuna's interpretation.]]
* TakingTheBullet: In the Kyoto arc, Setsuna takes an arrow to the chest to protect Konoka. It upsets Konoka so much that she unconsciously activates her healing powers to save Setsuna.
* TearsOfRemorse: A younger Setsuna was unable to save Konoka from drowning and both had to be saved by adults. Setsuna tearfully apologized to Konoka for failing her and even though Konoka forgave her, Setsuna couldn't forgive herself.
* ThunderShock: At one point she makes a terrible joke and has to apologize for it after the thunder disappears.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She's mostly a serious, samurai-like girl and seems to feel comfortable to wear masculine clothing on occasion. She still has her bouts of girliness such as not minding to wear skirts and cute dresses.
* TomboyishVoice: She speaks in a pretty low voice, matching with her {{Bifauxnen}} image.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Started as cold as ice due to seeing herself as a FailureKnight, but after the events of the Kyoto arc, she opened up a lot more and became friendlier. Lampshaded by Evangeline during their match in the Mahora Festival TournamentArc.
* TownGirls: The Butch. Setsuna is a swordswoman, works as Konoka's bodyguard, and usually prefers wearing either her school uniform or suits, while Asuna and Konoka have more obviously feminine traits in comparison.
* TransparentCloset: Setsuna is so obviously lesbian for her "{{Ojou}}-sama" Konoka that practically everyone knows it despite her frequent denials.
* TsurimeEyes: She had much sharper eyes early on as a way to mark her as the serious and distant tough girl obsessed with maintaining her abilities as a swordswoman she was at the beginning and to contrast Konoka's TaremeEyes. When she starts letting her emotions out, they become noticeably rounder.
* UndyingLoyalty: Ever since childhood, Setsuna has devoted her life to serving and protecting Konoka.
* WaifFu: She has a thin build and is quite short, but she's quite strong. However, she favors skill based techniques rather than strength.
* WeHaveBecomeComplacent: A recurring issue with her. During her tournament match against Evangeline, the vampire girl criticizes Setsuna for being so easily overpowered by her, claiming Setsuna has grown weak and unguarded because she got too relaxed after amending her relationship with Konoka and becoming friends with Negi and Asuna. Setsuna proclaims that she can protect Konoka without giving up her happiness, but she starts doubting it when her Shinmei-ryuu nemesis Tsukuyomi very nearly has her way with her because Setsuna gets distracted by losing her clothes during their duel. Tsukuyomi points out the Setsuna from before wouldn't have been held back by being stripped to her underwear and tells Setsuna won't beat her as long as she stays "human."
* WhatTheHellHero: When Setsuna learns that [[spoiler:Asuna will be sealed for 100 years to stabilize the Magic World, and thus will probably never see her friends again]], Setsuna [[BitchSlap slaps Asuna]] and [[BrokenTears with tears in her eyes]] asks Asuna how she could keep such a huge secret from her. Setsuna had to learn it from Albireo after she insisted that she had a right to know as Asuna's BestFriend. Also [[IronicEcho ironically]], Setsuna asked Asuna the same question Asuna asked Setsuna two chapters earlier, when Asuna (half-jokingly) tearfully chewed Setsuna out for treating her like a princess: "Aren't we friends?"
* WingedHumanoid: Due to being a half-crow demon, Setsuna has a pair of avian wings that she can summon at will. She keeps them hidden, but she was forced to reveal them during the end of the Kyoto trip.
* WingShield: She can use her wings as a shield, like when she wraps her wings around herself and Konoka to protect the latter from Fate's attack.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Chamo thought she ''looked'' like one at first. She's not even close, though.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Rakan indirectly points out how Setsuna resembles Eishun quite a lot. Both were TheComicallySerious Shinmeiryuu swordsman of their respective group, and [[CovertPervert can't handle]] [[DistractedByTheSexy perverted stuff]] very well.

The only character without a WeirdnessCensor, Chisame was introduced as a strange girl with a [[LivingADoubleLife double life]] -- a grumpy loner at school, but also internet idol "Chiu" at home. Her initial function was to [[MetaGuy snark about the implausibility]] of the situations she finds herself roped in, and initially tries [[AgentScully to deny or devise a mundane explanation]] for the supernatural events she witness, until Chachamaru confirms that she is indeed a robot, that Negi is also a powerful mage, and that she stumbled upon a plot to reveal magic to the world. Chisame thus gets involved in the plot to help maintain the life she's familiar with.\
\
Chisame's artifact from Negi is ''Sceptrum Virtuale'' - The King's Sceptre of Power. This Magical Girl wand allows Chisame to regulate electronic spirits, allowing her to access and manipulate data. While Chisame can enter the electronic world alone, the artifact gets better if she can take someone with her to support her.
----
* ActionSurvivor: She's a relatively normal girl who's forced into the magical world to survive on her own, which she manages with Negi's help.
* AngerBornOfWorry: When Negi successfully obtains Magia Erebea after spending days in a BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind against a copy of Evangeline, the first thing Chisame does is hit him with a pillow as she berates him for not waking up sooner and making her worry that he might have died.
* ApathyKilledTheCat: Played with. She seems like she's trying to avoid how things work, but at the same time she's the only one who actually seems to think it matters.
* AscendedExtra: She goes from a StraightMan minor character to basically being promoted to the new main heroine during the Magic World arc after she replaces Asuna as Negi's right-hand woman.
* BeautifulAllAlong: Her low self-esteem and her preference to be left alone probably keep her from prettying herself up a regular basis. However, ''Chiu'' is definitely pretty from the start. That's part of the point of the Chiu persona.
* ButtMonkey: Bad things just happen to her, though it's rarely serious.
* CantStayNormal: A more reluctant example, having been metaphorically dragged down to paranormal kicking and screaming before leaping out to gasp for air, only to discover that air is now too easy and boring, and therefore ending up in a combination of being dragged down again and saying "the hell with it".
* CharacterDevelopment: Despite her repeated protests, she makes friends with some of the other girls and finds out she actually really likes all the weird stuff that's going on around her. After the Magic World arc, she's making casual conversation with her fellow classmates.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She often gets jealous when seeing Negi with other girls.
* ClosetGeek: She wants nobody to know that she's a CosplayOtakuGirl with her own blog because she thinks that would make her a freak like her classmates. When Negi first found out about it, Chisame thought about killing him to keep her secret pastime from getting out.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: After Negi saves her from a tentacle monster that melts clothes, Chisame hits him in the head many times and yells at him for not rescuing her sooner.
* TheConscience: During the Magic World arc, Chisame is mainly with Negi to act as his voice of consciousness after Negi is separated from Asuna. Chisame is also usually the one to DopeSlap Negi and tell him to [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan keep it together.]] She is also the one who delivers the {{Dope Slap}}s to Negi when his Magia Erebea runs out of control. Twice. That said, Chisame is more willing to let Negi take risky decisions than Asuna, such as even ''encouraging'' him to learn [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Magia Erebea]] if he feels that's what he wants.
* TheConsigliere: Negi deeply values Chisame's advice to the point he's more or less appointed her as his [[TheConscience "voice of reason"]]. After the Magic World arc, Negi asks her to become his advisor. The epilogue reveals that she does indeed become a very important advisor to Negi.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: The first time she's a focus character, she was dressing up in various costumes for her website.
* CovertPervert: When she thinks Chiu is not being stimulating enough, her mind becomes filled with options of erotic pictures she could take of herself.
-->'''Chisame:''' Stop with the dirty stuff. No, dirty stuff is fine too!
* CripplingOverspecialization: She can hack almost any electronic system and use it for herself. Chisame's hacking and information gathering skills are sadly not much of use in the Magic World, as in the wild and even in the towns there is next to no tech used.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Orange hair to match her orange eyes.
* DeadpanSnarker: Like Yue, Chisame had a tendency early on to lampshade the absurdity of the situation. Unlike Yue, she really grew into the role rather than slowly losing it. This is about ten times funnier when she's in her Chiu outfit.
* TheDragAlong: Post Mahorafest she wanted to stay by herself and keep out of the group, but Chachamaru always dragged her along. When Chachamaru apparently briefly quits it, she gets bored and comes along voluntarily.
* EmbarrassingHobby: In her free time, Chisame writes a blog where she posts photoshopped pictures of herself doing cosplay. Since she wants to think of herself as the only normal person in a class of eccentric girls, Chisame is ashamed enough about her hobby as to consider getting rid of Negi when he first finds out about it.
* EndearinglyDorky: When Chisame is in control of her performances, she's completely fine. When she's forced into the spotlight against her will, she becomes a gibbering, shy mess. This actually earns her a prize at a cosplay event during the Mahora Festival.
* {{Expy}}: Like Asuna, Akamatsu considers her an expy of Naru from ''Manga/LoveHina'', though of 'nerdy Naru' as opposed to Asuna's 'protective Naru.'
* FieryRedhead: Like Asuna, Chisame is a redheaded {{Tsundere}} with a bad temper.
* GenreSavvy: While it doesn't help her much, she often predicts how events will turn sour for her. As the resident MetaGuy, she also often points tropes out.
* GirlishPigtails: In her child form, Chibi-Chiu, she styles her hair in pigtails because it is super cute when little girls do so.
* GlassesAndPonytailCoverup: She wears glasses (which she doesn't even need) and ties her hair in a ponytail for her usual self. When she's her idol self "Chiu", she lets her hair down and takes off the glasses.
* TheGlassesGottaGo: She doesn't wear her glasses when she's "Chiu" in order to make herself more attractive.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Her Sceptrum Virtuale artifact admittedly shows limited use (especially in the Magic World), but anytime the group is faced with mechanical enemies or the like (including {{Magitek}}) she really shines. Case in point, Chisame hacks Kurt Gödel's security systems and breaks Negi out of the projection room he was trapped in. She can also hack Chachamaru's KillSat and use it for herself. Her data spirits also have varied uses.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: As much as Chisame snarks at her classmates, she isn't any kinder to herself, thinking of herself as useless and ugly.
* {{Hikikomori}}: Left to her own devices she stays inside all day on the internet, though she only gets angry rather than anxious if taken out. It gets worse post-university.
* HumanizingTears: Given how overly abrasive and grumpy she normally is, the rare moments in which she becomes vulnerable and cries make her look sympathetic in an unusual way. The most notable example is the scene in Chapter 209 where she sheds tears as she contemplates the possibility that Negi won't wake up again if he fails the Magia Erebea test.
* IAmNotPretty: Zigzagged. As Chisame, she doesn't really think much of her appearance, but she does as Chiu, although she does touch up her appearance with Photoshock.
* IdiotHair: Since Naru has a HairAntennae, it split into ahoge in her two [[{{Expy}} expies]], Asuna and Chisame.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Chisame is often criticizing the absurdity of her classmates and calling them stupid freaks, but she doesn't really think highly of herself either. While she's boastful about the immense popularity of her Chiu alter ego, that's just her way of feeling a little less pathetic given that there's nothing interesting about her life outside the internet.
* InformedDeformity: She's ''supposed'' to have bad skin and pimples, but it doesn't show. Of course, the only one who actually claims that is herself, and she has notably low self-esteem concerning her looks.
* InsecureLoveInterest: Because she thinks nothing special of herself, Chisame is baffled to simply be treated with respect by Negi, let alone be appreciated by him. This is especially shown when Kurt Gödel allows Negi to let three of his partners accompany him to their meeting. Negi chooses Asakura, Nodoka and Chisame. While Chisame understands why Negi wanted the former two with him (for information gathering), she doesn't get why Negi would want her, to which Negi replies that he just wanted Chisame by his side all the time (as an advisor). [[{{Tsundere}} Chisame responds by punching him.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's grumpy, antisocial and has zero tolerance to anything she finds nonsensical. She's also one of Negi's most supportive companions, showing a remarkable amount of respect and faith in his decisions, even the riskiest ones like taking up a DangerousForbiddenTechnique.
* LastNameBasis: She tends to refer to almost all of her classmates by their last names.
* LittleMissSnarker: Thanks to some liberal use of age changing pills, she looks a 10-year-old girl and is still as snarky as ever.
* LivingADoubleLife: A grumpy loner at school and the internet idol "Chiu" at home.
* LogicalWeakness: Her artifact heavily relies on electronics to remain charged, just like a laptop or a phone. If there's no electricity nearby, it'll soon become useless.
* LonerTurnedFriend: By force. Chisame wanted nothing to do with a class full of weirdos and tried to live in quiet solitude locked inside her room while working on her net idol blog. After she gets involved in the magic stuff, she ends up getting dragged into Negi's team and becomes one of them before she realizes it.
* MetaGuy: She knows all about how fantasy stories go, which really helps her keep up with everything going on.
* MsFanservice: She has a blog in which she posts pictures of herself in provocative outfits like SailorFuku, PlayboyBunny and skimpy swimsuits.
* {{NEET}}: According to the epilogue, post-university Chisame stays unemployed and spends all her time on the internet. Negi still seeks her out as an advisor, though.
* NonActionSnarker: Chisame has absolutely zero combat utility (Rakan uses her as the base level for his power levels scale after all), but that sure doesn't stop her from snarking at anything she can.
* NotSoAboveItAll: For all her complaints about the weirdness of her class, Chisame is quirkier than she will ever admit. The fact that she's secretly a popular cosplayer net idol is just the beginning.
* ObsessivelyNormal: Chisame tries to be as unremarkable as possible because she hates attracting attention to herself. She's outraged at the magic, mad science and other assorted weirdness around her, since she thinks that's all ridiculous and everything would be better if her school was normal. Funnily enough, she learns that she's immune to a LotusEaterMachine that targets a person's insecurities because she's perfectly content with her current abnormal life. She loudly protests this.
* OddFriendship: Considering she supposedly dislikes anything and everything related to fantasy, she actually gets along very well with peoples like [[RobotGirl Chachamaru]] and even ''Jack Rakan'' and spends most of her time with those two.
* OnlySaneByComparison: Chisame is a net idol CosplayOtakuGirl with a double identity, switching back and forth between her DeadpanSnarker and attention-seeking {{Moe}} persona, but she's one of the most rational members of her WackyHomeroom. It's kinda her job to point out the weirdness of her class and get angry at no one else noticing the crazy stuff going on.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: She doesn't even need glasses; she just uses them to hide her expression. This also furthers her Naru {{expy}} status.
* PerformanceAnxiety: While she can do cosplay just fine for pictures and videos she posts on her blog, she freezes up when she's put on a stage with a real audience due to hating being the center of attention. As she struggles to remember any of her character's lines, she gets so nervous and embarrassed that she can only cry and fall to her knees. Ironically, the audience ends up loving her stage fright because it's {{Moe}} and they all vote for her as the winner.
* PlayboyBunny: One of Chiu's costumes is one because she uses it for fan attention on her website.
* PlayfulHacker: Falls under this when she's not being the MetaGuy.
* PurelyAestheticGlasses: She actually has ''better'' than average vision, and uses the glasses to stand out less.
* RefusalOfTheCall: She fights to get away from the weirdness, at first.
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: PlayedWith. Chisame is all for putting on sexy costumes to make Chiu's blog more popular, but she feels like she could die of embarrassment if anyone sees her dressed like that when she's her normal self. She also isn't happy with the fact that her focus chapters always end with her losing her clothes because of Negi or some tentacle monster.
* SarcasticDevotee: She's overly critical of anything Negi does, but that's because she wants to stop him from overthinking things. She will fully support any choice he makes as long as he's confident about it.
* SexierAlterEgo: As "Chiu-chan" Chisame tends to post racy pictures of herself that she wouldn't even think of doing if she was just plain old Chisame. Her personality becomes much more cutesy and even a bit flirty too.
* SheCleansUpNicely: As Chisame, she's rather plain though her physique is rather decent. As Chiu, she becomes one of the prettiest girls in the series and a source of fanservice.
* SidekickCreatureNuisance: Chisame's artifact comes with seven mouse-shaped spirits who support her. Chisame often calls them useless because they rather say very obvious things, but she actually likes them because [[{{Tsundere}} it's Chisame]].
* TheSnarkKnight: ''Extremely'' distant and snarky when formally introduced. Her attitude gradually toned down quite a bit as she integrated into the central cast, but she still qualifies.
* SourSupporter: She won't stop complaining about the ridiculousness of the fantasy stuff Negi and her classmates get her involved in, but at the end of the day, she will always come around and aid Negi in every way she can.
* SquishyWizard: Chisame does not do physical fights. Her artifact lets her fight mentally though, by going into the electronic world.
* StraightMan: Her main role in the first half of the series is to lampshade the absurdity of everything around her and react with outrage at other people not noticing the ridiculous things that happen. Although it turns out she is NotSoAboveItAll, as it's proven that she actually enjoys being involved in all the crazy fantasy stuff. Chisame refuses to accept this.
* SueDonym: Her online alias "Chiu" is an AlternateCharacterReading of her real name (the kanji for "same" can also be read as "u").
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: She supplants Asuna as Negi's FieryRedhead {{Tsundere}} partner and regulator during the Mundus Magicus arc after Asuna gets separated from Negi and sidelined from the main story. This is lampshaded by Jack and Chisame herself, calling herself Asuna's substitute.
* TarnishingTheirOwnBeauty: Fitting, as this was one of [[Manga/LoveHina Naru's]] traits. Chisame hates to stand out, so she ties back her hair and wears glasses to appear plain-looking in her regular self.
* {{Technopath}}: Chisame's artifact allows a mental internet link and can hack into any computer or electronic system.
* TemptingFate: She shouldn't have joked about fighting someone in the middle of a conspiracy. Or about making a Pactio.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type and described as a borderline case by Akamatsu. She actually likes the Ala Alba group, Chachamaru and Negi quite a bit, but since she's naturally abrasive she hates to show it. She also can get even more violent than Asuna when it comes to Negi.
* UnbrokenVigil: When Negi is having a BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind with a magic copy of Evangeline, Chisame sits by his side to nurse him for two days straight.
* {{Yandere}}: PlayedForLaughs, but during her focus chapter post-Mundus Magicus she was talking about pulling an "IfICantHaveYou" on Negi.
--> '''Chisame:''' Oh yeah, you're gonna get stabbed and killed one day! No, I'm going to stab you and then I'll die too.

[[folder:Kotarō Inugami]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SachiMatsumoto (videogames) and Creator/MarinaInoue (OVA)
[[quoteright:284:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kotaro_inugami.png]]

Negi's [[FireForgedFriends best friend]] and [[TheRival rival]] ever since he got [[DefeatMeansFriendship pummelled by him]] during the Kyoto ClassTrip. In many ways, he's a textbook {{shonen}} action protagonist, and often contrasted to Negi, to whom he sometimes (futilely) tries teaching how to act like a [[IdiotHero brash and overconfident]] hero rather than a meek and polite BadassBookworm. Kotarō is still in the 'girls have cooties' stage of development, though Chizuru and Natsumi become surrogate older sisters for him.\
\
As he's [[HalfHumanHybrid Half]]-Inugami Dog Demon, he can [[VoluntaryShapeshifting change shape]]. Usually, he looks human, except for [[LittleBitBeastly his ears and tail]], but can transform into a giant wolf-like dog or [[WolfMan something in between]]. He favors pure hand-to-hand combat, but also has the ability to control dog familiars and shadows.
----
* AdaptedOut: Kotarō doesn't appear in neither of the two anime series. His only animated appearances are in the Magic World arc OAD series and final movie.
* AnimalStereotypes: He styles himself as a [[IWorkAlone lone wolf]], but often lapses into [[IncrediblyLamePun doggishness]] and ends up being "domesticated" by Chizuru and Natsumi.
* {{Animorphism}}: He has the ability to fully transform into a canine form. Depending on his power at the time, he turns into a small dog or a big wolf.
* BadassAdorable: In the same boat as Negi in ways, as he's a cute, if somewhat loudmouthed kid who loves a good fight. That said, he's a loudmouthed kid who loves a good fight and is actually perfectly capable of kicking ass.
* BaitAndSwitchSentiment: He admits to Natsumi that he does love her... as part of his surrogate family. She finds herself a bit disappointed at that.
* BashBrothers: With Negi. They had their first fight together against Graf Wilhelm von Herrmann. In the Magic World arc they fully become this trope during their stint as a gladiator team.
* BattleAura: When unleashing his Shadow Hounds.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: He deeply values both his friendship with Negi, and living with Chizuru and Natsumi, as they become the only true friends or family he's ever had.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Natsumi, as he can't really figure out why [[{{Tsundere}} she reacts the way she does to him]]. His IdiotHero tendencies coupled with her deep insecurity cause them to clash even though it's obvious they at least feel something for each other.
* BestFriend: Negi's class mentions he could use a male friend about his age. Enter Kotarō, though he tries to play the rival angle up more.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Negi in his UnstoppableRage almost would have been killed by Graf Wilhelm von Herrmann, if Kotarō hadn't jumped in and saved Negi from the energy blast.
** Just as Negi was about to be shot down by Chao's androids, Kotarō comes to save him. He didn't show up to the final fight before.
** When Shirabe corners Nodoka, Chisame and Haruna and shoots them down, Kotarō arrives just in time to help them escape.
* BigEater: He eats a lot.
* BishieSparkle: His teenaged form is so good-looking that he makes sparkles appear, especially when Natsumi is thinking about how hot he is.
* BloodKnight: He loves fighting, though mostly because, as he admits, fighting is really the only thing he knows.
* BoisterousBruiser: He's rough and loud, but friendly to his allies.
* BrattyHalfPint: He's portrayed as a loud, overconfident, immature and troublesome kid, especially in his earlier appearances. This is why [[ComedicShotacon Ayaka]] can't stand him. Some CharacterDevelopment allows him to become more mature.
* BrokenTears: After his defeat to Ku:Nel Sanders in the Martial Arts Tournament, he breaks down in tears as he fears Negi will never like him again for not being as strong as him.
* CanisMajor: His strongest form Kuon Eisou, in which he completely transforms into a wolf beast.
* CantCatchUp:
** A big part of his CharacterDevelopment is realizing that Negi is just too far ahead of him in battle prowess.
** He admits to Natsumi that he hopes to catch up to Kaede someday.
* CastingAShadow: He has the ability to summon vast swarms of autonomous spirit wolves made of darkness/shadow.
* CharacterDevelopment: Initially all Kotarō cared about was his own strength and his rivalry with Negi. He learns what love is and how he wants to protect Natsumi above all else. He also learns that sometimes the best way through a situation isn't with your fists.
* ChasteHero: Kotarō is a little too young to be interested in stuff like dating. He ranks girls according to how strong they are, having no romantic interest in any of them whatsoever. This causes some issues in his relationship with Natsumi since her attraction to Kotarō's older form causes her to forget he's still a kid who is just starting to learn what friendship and familial love are.
* ChickMagnet: He attracts nearly as many ladies as Negi at the ball. Natsumi, Mei, and Madoka are all crushing on him as well, and he's none the wiser about any of them.
* CutlassBetweenTheTeeth: Carries Asuna's {{BFS}} between his teeth in the Magic World tournament. Not that he had much of a choice since he had transformed into his monster wolf form.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Post-HeelFaceTurn since his secondary skillset is shadow based KiManipulation.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Right before their Pactio, Kotarō tells Natsumi he will protect her because she's like family to him.
* DoppelgangerAttack: Kotarō is able to use shadow clones. They get even better after he trained with Kaede.
* ElementalHairColors: Black hair for a shadow magic user. He counts for ElementalEyeColors because [[CurtainsMatchTheWindow his eyes are black too]].
* {{Expy}}: Akamatsu admitted he's a fan of the manga/anime series ''Manga/{{Inuyasha}}'', so it's no surprise he took inspiration from the eponymous character to create Kotarō since like Inuyasha, Kotarō is a half-dog demon who enjoys fighting.
* {{Flight}}: Kotarō is one of the few in the group who genuinely can fly without relying on any tech. He uses his dog spirits to do so.
* FriendlessBackground: Because he's a half-dog demon, Kotarō never fit in with neither the human and demon societies. He has no one he can call a friend until Negi becomes his FirstFriend.
* FriendlyRivalry: As lampshaded by Asuna "It's spelled 'rival' but it is pronounced 'best friend'."
* GirlsHaveCooties: He does eventually learn to care for girls in a familial way, but he still thinks kissing is gross and doesn't understand how Negi can do it with so many girls.
* HalfHumanHybrid: A Half-Dog Demon.
* HappilyAdopted: Since he has no family to speak of, he's unofficially adopted by Chizuru who thinks it's her responsability to raise him. Eventually, Kotarō admits he loves living with Chizuru and Natsumi because they're the only family he has ever known.
* HarbingerOfImpendingDoom: He returns after the Kyoto arc by being found injured by Chizuru and Natsumi.
* HatesBeingNicknamed: He doesn't like it when Konoka shortens his name to "Kota-kun" and tells her to drop the nickname.
* HealingFactor: He explains it as an "ability of the Inugami clan". It's not Wolverine-class, but he's taken multiple swords to the chest and recovered.
* HeelFaceTurn: He first appeared as one of Chigusa's lackeys who were trying to kidnap Konoka in the Kyoto arc. He later returns to have a rematch with Negi and they end up becoming friends after Kotarō helps Negi save his students from the demon Herrmann. From then on, Kotarō is part of Negi's team.
* HiddenDepths:
** {{Idiot Hero}} tendencies aside, he does show remarkable perception from time to time on things, and shows he's plenty capable of not looking for fights that would be to his disadvantage.
** When Natsumi presses him on the girls she perceives to be her romantic rivals (Sakura Mei, Yue, Kaede, Madoka, Ayaka, and Chizuru), he gives her well-thought out responses (even if they are not what Natsumi was looking for) about each one of them and shows that he respects all of them despite his GirlsHaveCooties attitude. When Natsumi then presses him about his feelings towards her, he actually thinks out a response and wonders if Natsumi actually likes him.
* HotBlooded: He is much more of a classic shounen protagonist than Negi himself.
* HowMuchMoreCanHeTake: During the tournament finals, Kotarō gets the unfortunate role of punching bag while Negi sets up for the finishing techniques. The mauling he gets is quite brutal.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Played with. Kotarō, as a HotBlooded BloodKnight from the Kansai region and an IdiotHero, is set up as Negi's rival and {{Foil}}, but since he is as old as Negi, he is too young to drink and his StreetSmart thinking shows, while everyone is split up in the Magic World. He also only comes off as more obnoxious compared to Negi because Negi isn't actually acting his age.
* IdiotHero: A proud and acknowledged boy who doesn't care that he's stupid.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: He says that having to form a Pactio with her is gross. Unbeknownst to him, Natsumi was eavesdropping and feels so hurt that she starts crying without Kotarō even understading what he did wrong. After a series of misunderstandings, Kotarō explains he meant that [[GirlsHaveCooties he thinks kissing is gross]], not kissing Natsumi in particular.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rough, likes to fight and is much less of an overall NiceGuy than Negi, but still a good guy.
* TheLancer: Contrasting Negi, he's much more aggressive and impulsive, though he's still the closest thing Negi has to a partner after Asuna.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Between Kyoto and Graf Wilhelm, his memory is briefly wiped to prevent him from leaking information.
* LimitedWardrobe: He always wears the same casual attire.
* LittleBitBeastly: He has dog ears and a tail.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Having grown up as a social outcast, Kotarō isn't capable of understanding friendship fully at first. It takes a while before he starts learning what real friendship is and admits that Negi is his friend, not just a rival.
* MagicPants: His pants remain perfectly intact as he transforms into his beast form.
* AMatchMadeInStockholm: He took Natsumi hostage when they first met, and the two of them eventually develop BelligerentSexualTension.
* MeaningfulName: "Inugami" means "dog spirit".
* MistakenForRomance: Whenever Natsumi sees Kotarō with other girls like Ayaka, Yue and Mei, she internally believes them to be romantic rivals because she thinks [[InsecureLoveInterest Kotarō will naturally find them more attractive than an average-looking girl like her]]. It's not until Kotarō admits that he only ranks girls according to how strong they are that Natsumi realizes that he respects strong girls, but his feelings don't go any deeper than that.
* MonsterRoommate: Chizuru and Natsumi basically adopt Kotarō as their roommate after they take him home while thinking he's an abandoned puppy. They're very surprised when said puppy turns into a little boy with a tail and sharp claws, but they easily accept him and make him feel at home.
* MrFanservice: He wears a black leather jacket, black leather pants, sneakers and has an occasional ShirtlessScene paired with said jacket. His teenage form is also as hot as Negi's.
* NoSocialSkills: Having been abandoned as a child and spending his whole life doing anything normal besides training to fight, Kotarō doesn't know how to socialize with people very well.
* ObliviousToLove: He thinks Natsumi gets so agitated around him because she dislikes him despite how obvious her huge crush is.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:He and Natsumi are the only confirmed couple in the epilogue.]]
* ParentalAbandonment: He has no family or parents to speak of, but it doesn't really bother him.
* PrecociousCrush: It's strongly hinted that he's nursing a tiny crush on Chizuru.
* RelativelyFlimsyExcuse: He moves in with Natsumi and Chizuru under the pretense of being the former's little brother.
* TheRival: To Negi in martial arts, such as during the Mahora Fest tournament.
* SarcasticDevotee: He always insults Negi, but he is also one of his most loyal friends.
* SatisfiedStreetRat: He was abandoned as a baby because of being a half-dog demon and ever since he can remember, he has survived on his own by taking "bad jobs." He doesn't mind any of this because growing up in that harsh environment toughed him up.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack: He explicitly states that his school uniform is his battle garb.
* SexierAlterEgo: His teenaged form "Kojirou" can be quite charming in a bad boy sort of way. Natsumi gets very flustered around him and can easily forget he's a kid in a hot teenage body.
* ShadowWalker: He later learns the ability to teleport himself (and others) through shadows.
* ShonenHair: He has spiky black hair like the stereotypical shounen protagonist.
* SleepModeSize: He changes into a puppy when his powers are sealed. He can transform into a giant wolf when fully released.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Despite being a proud IdiotHero, Kotarō proves to be surprisingly insightful at times.
* SpeciesSurname: As his surname says, Kotarō is a half-Inugami {{youkai}}.
* StockShonenRival: Hits almost all of the requirements; {{Foil}} to the TheHero, introduced as an enemy, acts as Negi's {{Lancer}} and {{Rival}}. What makes him stand out is how he is the HotBlooded one while Negi is more intelligent and thoughtful.
* TastesLikeFriendship: Kotarō is first greeted by Chizuru and Natsumi with a homecooked meal (after an appetizer of MarshmallowHell); his constant complimenting of Chizuru's cooking pretty much seals it.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: His original outfit (during the Kyoto Class Trip) did not include a shirt, most likely due to tearing it up in his first fight with Negi and deciding to just wear a jacket instead. He wears a shirt by the time of his next appearance.
* WalkingTheEarth: At least seven years after Class 3-A's graduation, he simply ran off for some "ninja training".
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: He even asks IsItSomethingYouEat. By the ball he acknowledges familial love.
* WorfHadTheFlu: When Kotarō arrived at Mahora, he wasn't initially able to use his dog spirits because the Kansai Magic Association sealed them as punishment for him helping Chigusa Amagasaki in Kyoto. When Graf Wilhelm von Herrmann attacked Kotarō, he wasn't able to fully retaliate and suffered a beatdown. After helping Negi defeat von Herrmann, his penalty was lifted.
* WorthyOpponent: He views Negi as this, and tries to challenge him to a fight at any opportunity. He eventually grows out of this mindset and instead views Negi as his best friend.
* WouldntHitAGirl: He does not like having to hit girls. It's actually presented as a deeply stupid comportment, and several of the {{Action Girl}}s like Kaede have tried to ''literally'' beat it out of him.

Nodoka is a quiet and seemingly shy girl in the Library Exploration Club. She quickly develops a crush on Negi and forms a pactio during the Kyoto arc, gaining an artifact that allows her to read minds, which she uses to help acquire information for the group. Despite her ShrinkingViolet attitude, she's actually quite bold when it comes to pursuing Negi. She's normally associated with her club mates and close friends Yue and Haruna, and is one of the best students at Mahora (ranking #21).
----
* AchillesHeel: While ''Diarium Ejus'', her legendary artifact, is one of the strongest that exist, it comes with numerous weaknesses.
** Nodoka needs to know her target's full name to read their mind. She later fixes this problem by obtaining the ''Comptina Daemonia'', which allows her to find out her target's name by pointing her finger at them and simply ask them.
** Nodoka needs to be close to the target to activate her artifact. The range is roughly 7.4 meters, though once it's activated, she can keep her distance and still read the target's thoughts.
** The thoughts are written down in her book. Nodoka thus has to keep her book open and read it, though she also fixes that weakness by obtaining the ''Auris Recitans'' (Reading Ear), an ear-piece which reads the content of a book of Nodoka's choice telepathically for her.
* ACupAngst: She laments her small bust size once.
* AdventurerArchaeologist: All Library Exploration Club members are this somewhat, but Nodoka was able to use her trap and secret room detecting skills in the Magic World, after she was split from the group and found by Craig and Aisha's adventure group. She later stores her treasure hunter outfit in her artifact card.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Firmly in the Negi camp, but the [[{{Polyamory}} Saishoudoukin]] incident and the fact that Yue attracts other girls heavily implies that she might be secretly attracted to her best friend.
* ApologisesALot: Especially when she's either thinking an improper thought, or using her mind-reading ability in a diabolical manner (what else to be expected from a ShrinkingViolet?)
* BadassBookworm: In Nodoka's case, if she breaks out her book, you'd best turn the other way and run.
* BestFriend: To Yue and vice versa.
* BookSmart: Nodoka consistently ranks near the top of the entire grade.
* CombatClairvoyance: Her artifact can read her opponent's mind in combat, allowing Nodoka to react to the opponent's plan and warn her allies of which will be their next move.
* CovertPervert: Despite her looks and usual personality, her subconscious tends to have some rather filthy fantasies. This includes devising a kind of [[ThreesomeSubtext menage a trois]] as a solution to her LoveTriangle with Yue; thanks to [[DirtyMindReading Diarium Ejus,]] she is aware of and mortified by her subconscious' rather direct approaches to such things. And so is everybody who was reading over her shoulder.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Purple hair and eyes.
* CuteBookworm: She's shy, quiet and is part of a club devoted to exploring the library.
* DesignatedVictim: During the Magic World, she's first attacked by bounty hunters to lure out Kaede and Setsuna and later Shirabe, Fate and Dynamis all make attempts to eliminate her due to her mind reading artifact.
* DoesNotLikeMen: In the anime she had a level of androphobia.
* DoggedNiceGirl: In fact, Nodoka was the ''first'' girl in the class to confess her feelings to Negi all the way back in the Kyoto arc.
* DorkKnight: She's shy, quiet, and apparently a ShrinkingViolet, but actually one of the bravest members of Ala Alba.
* {{Expy}}: She's clearly one to Akamatsu's earlier character, [[Manga/LoveHina Shinobu Maehara]]. They look extremely similar and have the same shy, quiet attitude. Both are also known to be {{Covert Pervert}}s.
* FighterMageThief: The thief to Haruna's Fighter and Yue's Mage. Nodoka makes herself useful in Ala Alba and her treasure hunting troupe by stealing information and treasure respectively, using her experience with Library Island to detect traps.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Nodoka is the Phlegmatic of the Library Exploration Club quartet, being the empathetic and reserved member of the club.
* GirlishPigtails: When she was younger, she tied her hair into low bunches at the back.
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: [[MundaneMadeAwesome Whenever she asks someone for their name]].
* GrewASpine: Nodoka begins the series as the typical ShrinkingViolet, but quickly grows a spine and starts taking steps to prove herself to Negi and their friends. She goes from one of the meekest girls to one of the bravest.
* HeroicBSOD: After seeing [[spoiler:Craig and Aisha get erased from existence]] in front of her, her mind shuts down and Asakura is seemingly left alone desperately trying to think of a way out. She quickly recovers, however, and [[spoiler:steals Dynamis' Grandmaster Key.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Not that good at receiving praise, even if it was well-earned.
* HiddenDepths: Nodoka is surprisingly fearless for a shy bookworm, even in the face of an overwhelming opponent.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: Her long bangs obscure her eyes, to highlight her terminal shyness. As her [[GrewASpine shyness subsides]], her eyes begin peeking through more and more until finally the bangs don't hide the eyes anymore.
* IAmNotPretty: When Yue calls her beautiful in the final chapter, a flustered Nodoka can only stammer out a negative response to it.
* IdenticalStranger: Craig is so drawn to protect her because she looks like one of his childhood friends from back home.
* IdiotHair: She has one, though she's one of the better students in school and doesn't have too many dumb moments.
* IKnowYourTrueName: ''Comptina Daemonia'' shows her anyone's name as long as she points and asks.
* InSeriesNickname: "Hon'ya", Japanese for "Bookstore" or potentially Bookstore keeper. The English translation at first [[InconsistentDub jumped back and forth]] between "Librarian", "Bookshop", and variants thereof before eventually settling on the literal translation, "Bookstore". It can also mean "bookworm" (the "ya" being sometimes indicative of a character trait or an deep interest in something).
* LetsGetDangerous: After her friends were [[spoiler:erased from existence]], Nodoka showed the culprit exactly [[TookALevelInBadass how much grinding she did]].
-->'''Nodoka:''' I am Miyazaki Nodoka, Treasure Hunter and member of Ala Alba. My counterattack starts here.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Much to Nodoka's own surprise, Yue leans on her heavily for support, especially after the death of Yue's grandfather basically robbed Yue of her reason to live. Yue confesses to Haruna that she's deathly afraid of Nodoka disliking her, and the implications of such an event coming to pass are [[DespairEventHorizon not]] [[DrivenToSuicide pretty]].
* LivingLieDetector: Diarium Ejus can read minds with a great deal of detail, so in situations where she's safe from retaliation it makes her excellent at information recovery with no chance of misinformation. Except when the interrogated person doesn't know any better. Memory manipulation or replicating consciousness (as was the case with Shiori's ''Signum Biolegens'') make it impossible for Nodoka to find out whether the person is lying. Thus, Nodoka was unable to tell whether the Asuna before her (truly Shiori) was the real deal or fake.
* LogicalWeakness: The ability to read minds is powerful indeed, but if the target doesn't have a mind, like Chao's robots, then her artifact becomes useless.
* LoveConfession: Despite Nodoka being extremely introverted and shy, she confesses to Negi long before any other girl does in chapter 33.
* {{Munchkin}}: After being separated from the group in Mundus Magicus she joined a group of treasure hunters. She eschews any valuable treasure, instead aiming for ''Comptina Daemonia'' and ''Auris Recitans''. These items' powers combine with her Diarium Ejus to make it useful in real time instead of having to rely on the target willingly giving up their name and letting Nodoka sit down and read.
* MutualEnvy: Yue envies Nodoka's courage and overall cuteness, while Nodoka is jealous of how Yue is able to understand Negi on a deeper level than her due to similar backgrounds.
* NiceGirl: She's gentle and supportive even of her love rivals.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The nice to Haruna's mean and Yue's inbetween, keeping them both more honest with themselves than they would probably be if left to their own devices.
* PluckyGirl: Negi getting his ass kicked by Fate? She gets Kotarō to teleport her in right next to Fate to figure out his plan. [[spoiler:Friends get erased from existence right in front of her? Panic for a few seconds, then read his mind, steal his key and teleport to safety with critical information.]] Just because she's quiet doesn't mean she's a coward.
* PositiveFriendInfluence: To Yue and Haruna, but definitely moreso the former. Following the death of her grandfather, Yue became a bitter, lonely person without any purpose in her life. Nodoka pushed Yue into a friendship with her and Yue became a better, more mature person as a result. Nodoka will even prod Yue into pursuing Negi and feels she should be honest with her feelings.
* RemovedAchillesHeel: Nodoka's ruthless {{munchkin}}ning with magical artifacts allows her to bypass the weaknesses of the frighteningly powerful ''Diarium Ejus'', turning it into an immense StoryBreakerPower.
* SecretlySelfish: After Yue reveals that she's in love with Negi too, Nodoka urges Yue to push forward and act on her feelings... But she reveals to (unbeknownst to her) Misora that she's actually rather jealous of how alike Yue and Negi are and that she might be falling behind.
* ShrinkingViolet: Subverted. She's quite shy, but it's note that she's actually very assertive when it comes to pursuing Negi including a quick confession and getting a date in during Mahorafest. There's a reason her Pactio card lists "courage" as her virtue.
* StoryBreakerPower: ''Diarium Ejus'' is one of the rarest and most terrifying artifacts that have existed and for good reason. [[{{Telepathy}} Mind-reading]] gives Nodoka the ability to effortlessly interrogate enemies, and in battle she can read their moves and act accordingly. She also later learns to read the thoughts of multiple people at once. Nodoka is [[DesignatedVictim frequently a target]] that is taken out first because if she is not, she'll ruin everyone's plans.
* TakeAThirdOption: Nodoka knows she and Yue are going to be hurt whether Negi chooses one of them or rejects both of them. Her subconscious wants to go for the throuple option, but Nodoka knows that's inappropriate.
* ThreesomeSubtext: Nodoka seems pretty intent on taking Negi for herself, but her subconscious reveals that she's actually perfectly fine with sharing Negi with her best friend, Yue.
* TookALevelInBadass: She goes from being a shy little bookworm to taking on [[TheDragon Dynamis]] and winning, albiet not by direct combat.
* UtilityPartyMember: While Nodoka isn't a combatant, her mind reading artifact is extremely useful to expose the enemy's weaknesses and information gathering.
* WeakButSkilled: She has no combat abilities, very little magic, and effectively no experience. She does, however, have a mind reading artifact that allows her exploit an enemy's weak points in order to avoid their attacks despite being far slower and weaker than they are.

Yue is an [[TeenGenius extremely intelligent]] but cynical girl with [[BrilliantButLazy demotivation]] issues stemming from [[ParentalAbandonment the death of her beloved grandfather]]. She's normally quiet, distant and snarky but very supportive of her friends and Nodoka in particular, who reached out to her when she was isolated. This has some emotional consequences for her when she ends up in a LoveTriangle with her and Negi, who is largely oblivious. Most people find it difficult to read her emotions.\
\
Yue has a fair talent for magic, but her primary strength is her intellect and quick thinking skills, which allow her to quickly come up with strategies.\
\
Her artifact from Negi is ''Orbis Sensualium Pictus'' - The Illustration of the World. It's a magical self-updating encyclopedia connected to the [=MahoNet=], which gives her access to top-secret magical information, from spells to magical creatures. Furthermore, Yue is given a standard set of magical items, which include a flying broom, a robe, a wizard hat and other accessories.
----
* ACupAngst: From early on, she's sure she's unattractive with her childlike body.
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: A minor example, especially since the manga hadn't fleshed out her personality at that point. In the first anime she is far more aggressive about pursuing Negi and less worried about hurting Nodoka's feelings in the process than she is in the manga. She even ''chews Nodoka out'' about her timid nature.
* AmbiguousDisorder: Yue's extreme lack of self-esteem and self-worth, general disinterest in basically everything around her, and motivational issues hint that she might be suffering from depression stemming from the death of her beloved grandfather. This is perhaps best shown when Nodoka confronts Yue about her feelings for Negi. Yue threatens to "disappear" on a few occasions with [[DrivenToSuicide very obvious implications]], and Nodoka reading Yue's mind using her artifact freaks Nodoka out.
* AmbiguouslyAbsentParent: While very few parents of the cast are shown or even mentioned, Yue deserves special mention because only her grandfather is given any spotlight. Whatever is up with Yue's parents is never delved into.
* AmbiguouslyBi: One of the strongest Negi contenders, but she calls Nodoka "beautiful" in the final chapter...
* ApatheticStudent: Though in Yue's case, she's apathetic about pretty much everything in her life. She doesn't try particularly hard in school despite possessing superior intellect. Once she starts studying magic, she completely sheds this trope and actually works her tail off to become a competent mage. By the end of the series, she acknowledges that she needs to work harder in regular school as well.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: She's not that strong even after the Ariadne arc, but she's ''very'' well prepared and thinks things through far further ahead than almost anyone else in the story, including preparing multiple contingency spells upon seeing an electric Averruncus.
* BadassBack: Intercepts a shadow puppet coming up behind her with her massive Ariadne sword.
* BadassBookworm: She's tiny and looks weak, but is actually a part of the library exploration club and has some pretty good survival skills. She also ends up becoming a fairly competent mage.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: After the death of Yue's grandfather, Nodoka was the first person who could bond with Yue over their mutual love for books. For this reason, Yue considers Nodoka her most precious friend and will do anything for her sake.
* BerserkerTears: [[spoiler:After Emily is erased from existence in front of her eyes, the normally cool as a cucumber Yue flies into a never-before-seen rage as she tries to exact vengenace for her fallen comrade with tears in her eyes]].
* BestFriend: To Nodoka and vice versa. A short flashback reveals that Yue became friends with Nodoka after the other members of the Library Club.
* BlackMage: Yue looks like a BlackMagicianGirl, but is more apathetic and a DeadpanSnarker, and not elegant enough to qualify as a LadyOfBlackMagic. In contrast to [[WhiteMagicianGirl Konoka,]] Yue focuses more on offensive spells, and like her master, Negi, specializes in [[LightEmUp light]], [[BlowYouAway wind]] and [[ShockAndAwe lightning]] magic. She eventually becomes less of a SquishyWizard and more of a MagicKnight after training for months at the Ariade Academy.
* BookDumb: She's one of the smartest girls in the class, but she gets poor grades and is one of the baka rangers. It's implied on occasion though that she just doesn't like studying mundane subjects. Her position in the philosophy club might play a role in this.
* BreakoutCharacter: Yue started off as little more than Nodoka's best friend and one of the Baka Rangers. When the Magic World arc came about, her rising popularity led to her getting an entire mini-arc to herself (which was later animated) while most of the other girls only got passing notes about their progress. The second-to-last chapter of the series is also entirely devoted to her in the future. Yue also won the final character popularity poll, beating out other such popular characters like Evangeline, Nodoka, Setsuna, and Makie.
* BrilliantButLazy: The reason for her poor grades is that for a TeenGenius, Yue is also ''extremely'' unmotivated and she refuses to put any effort in. Once she gets a goal she wants to accomplish, she can learn in mere weeks what takes others years.
* BrutalHonesty: Has no issue telling people what she really thinks of them. She admits this is one of the habits she needs to curb.
* CannotSpitItOut: She spends a good two or three hundred chapters unable to admit her feelings to Negi for him despite everyone, even rivals, telling her to do it.
* CerebroElectro: Like Negi she utilizies lightning magic and makes up for her rather weak level of prowess with brilliant strategies.
* CharacterDevelopment: All Yue seemed to care about early on was Nodoka's well-being and put almost no thought into herself and her studies. Once she picks up magic, she takes tremendous steps to becoming a capable mage and after the Magic World arc, she works hard to improve her "embarrassing" grades.
* TheConsigliere: Just before Negi takes off to fight Chao, he insists that he has a serious discussion with Yue about the consequences of his actions. Chisame takes up this role later in the Magic World while Yue is absent, however after that arc Makie mentions that they both act as his advisers for serious problems.
* CovertPervert: If [[http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59/Xophien/KamoRankings.jpg Chamo's charts]] are accurate, her ero rating is slightly less than Nodoka, and on par with ''Evangeline''.
* CrazyPrepared: She predicted that Quintum would leave her paralyzed and cast a paralysis release spell in herself. Furthermore, she had sixteen predictions of how Quintum would take them down, and it's highly possible that she had prepared countermeasures for each outcome.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Purple hair and eyes.
* CuteBookworm: Though her cuteness doesn't start to come out until she develops feelings for Negi. She then becomes a gibbering mess whenever the subject of romance comes up.
* CuteWitch: Her pactio outfit puts her in a cute witch outfit complete with a black witch's hat.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Unlike Negi's other students, Akamatsu dedicates multiple chapters to Yue's stay in the Magic World as a student of the Ariadne Academy. She even got her own OVA episode when some of the chapters were animated.
* DeadpanSnarker: She's almost always very flat and emotionless looking to go along with her sarcastic side.
* DismissingACompliment: No matter what kind of feats she pulls off, she brushes compliments off or passes them onto others. She doesn't feel she's worth any praise at all.
* {{Dismotivation}}: The death of her grandfather left her feeling that her life had no meaning and thus there was no need to try at anything. When she discovers the existence of magic she starts to get over this issue.
* {{Emoticon}}: Her facial expressions sometimes match the :< and :X emoticons, and she's the only character in the series who has this feature.
* EmotionlessGirl: Not really emotionless, but much more stoic than her friends, due to showing the same blasé face most of the time. It's lampshaded during the exploration of Library Island.
-->'''Konoka:''' You're really excited aren't you?\
'''Yue:''' … hehe, does it show that much?\
'''Asuna:''' (thinking) No it doesn't, she just has the same expression as usual…
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Nodoka, Collette, and ''especially'' Emily are all implied to be attracted to her. Haruna [[LampShadeHanging lampshades]] this trope after observing the [[ClingyJealousGirl various reactions]] of Yue's mini-harem to Yue. Needless to say, Yue isn't amused at all.
* {{Expy}}: On top of her basic physical design, she matches the [[TheQuietOne quiet]] [[SugarAndIcePersonality and reserved]] nature of ''Franchise/TouhouProject'''s Patchouli Knowledge. She's also a magical librarian and tends to wear the same outfits.
* FighterMageThief: The mage to Haruna's Fighter and Nodoka's Thief. Yue becomes a talented (if underpowered) mage and eventually graduates to the front lines after she attends [[WizardingSchool Ariadne]].
* FlyingBroomstick: This is part of her pactio outfit, but because she's still a novice at magic at the time she doesn't get to fly it until she enters WizardingSchool in the Magic World. She graduates to SkySurfing not long after.
* ForeheadOfDoom: Her hair keeps her bangs out of her forehead, leaving a giant forehead for all to see.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Yue is the Melancholic of the Library Exploration Club quartet, being the emotionally distant and analytical member of the club.
* GenreSavvy: In the first season of the anime, Yue is the only person to figure out that the "Negi" who has her isn't really him. How can she tell? He starts showing more of an interest in her.
* HeightAngst: Very subtle, but she becomes annoyed whenever Kotarō calls her Chibi/Shorty.
* HeroicBSOD: When Nodoka finds out about Yue's crush on Negi, Yue completely freaks out, believing Nodoka will hate her because of "betraying" her and says she would rather [[DrivenToSuicide "disappear"]] than risk losing Nodoka's friendship. She only calms down after Nodoka's GetAHoldOfYourselfMan.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Yue brushes off any and all praise, and her self-esteem is ''frighteningly low''.
* HiddenDepths: One of the school clubs she's in is the "Children's Literature Club".
* HighPressureEmotion: Twice in rapid succession after meeting up with Negi again, though one could say it's just one continuous moment. Doesn't mean it's not ridiculously cute and funny, especially given Collet and Emily's reactions.
* HotWitch: In the DistantFinale she's grown quite a bit taller and has more adult proportions.
* HumanizingTears: Yue rarely expresses real concern about the danger she's in, but at the thought she might have hurt or offended Nodoka, she's reduced to tears.
* IdiotHair: Subverted. She has the hair and is one of the baka rangers, but that's actually due to nearly going out of her way to do badly.
* InconvenientAttraction: When she finally admits she's in love with Negi, Yue feels awful because her best friend Nodoka is also in love with him and she thinks she's betraying Nodoka. It takes Nodoka literally slapping some sense into her for Yue to calm down and accept her feelings for Negi.
* InSeriesNickname: Yuecchi, Yuekichi and a few more in regards to her height and [[ForeheadOfDoom large forehead]]. [[EmbarrassingNickname She isn't fond of the latter nicknames.]]
* InsecureLoveInterest: Yue spends a couple of chapters angsting about how she can't confess to Negi simply because she can't remember the reason why she fell for him in the first place. She also states that "nobody would lay eyes on this body".
* InstantArmor: Yue can summon and equip two different outfits instantly. The first one is stored inside her pactio card and comes with the standard set of a mage, including a RobeAndWizardHat with protective properties. Yue obtained a full set of armor that she can summon at will, after she joined the Ariadne Battle Maiden Knight Squad.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: She only wishes for Negi to be happy with Nodoka, though Nodoka actually seems to get tired of her passivity.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Once she got in on the {{Masquerade}}. She was also eager to make a Pactio with Negi... at least until she found out [[AMagicContractComesWithAKiss what it entailed]].
* TheLeader: Of both her Ariadne Squadron and the Baka Rangers. In some continuities she protests that the dumbest member should be the leader of the Baka Rangers, and she's by far the smartest one.
* LetsGetDangerous: After spending about half of the series as a UtilityPartyMember, Yue graduates to the front lines when her and her Ariadne friends are attacked by a griffin dragon. She devises a plan to defeat the beast using Emily's magic as a feint (which she has to avoid and barely does) and a small knife (and a spell) to break one of its horns. [[TookALevelInBadass It's easily her finest moment in the entire series]].
* LikeADuckTakesToWater: Despite having no magical experience or background and being just a (mostly) normal girl, Yue picks up on magic extremely quickly. She even outclasses Konoka early on in their training, a girl said to have more magical potential than the ''Thousand Master''.
* LittleMissBadass: Being vertically challenged doesn't prevent her from cementing her status on this page amongst her fellow badass [[TrueCompanions Companions]].
* LittleMissSnarker: She's small and tends to be quietly sarcastic.
* LogicalWeakness:
** Her artifact can access a lot of information, even if its classified. However, if there's no information available to her, then it's just a book. She tries to get some info on Chao's robots, but because they're likely from the future, there's no info for her to gather.
** Her potion that she drinks at the end of the series gives her a bunch of spells to use at her disposal, but because she's still drinking a lot of fluid, [[PottyEmergency she'll have to suffer the natural consequences]].
* LonerTurnedFriend: In her backstory, she used to be a loner, Nodoka was the first person to befriend her.
* LoveConfession: Yue confesses to Negi in chapter 344 and simultaneously recovers her memories.
* MagicKnight: After her training at Ariadne she becomes a fairly good mage and acquires a massive sword and armor set.
* MarilynManeuver: Once did it to herself by accident when trying to demonstrate a spell.
* MatchmakerCrush: Tries to help Nodoka win over Negi, but then there's [[LoveTriangle the issue of her own growing feelings for him]].
* MeaningfulName: Yue has this in both Japanese and Chinese. In Japanese, Yue means "tragic accident". This is a name given to unfortunate children, hinting at a dark past. In Chinese, Yue means "moon", fitting for a girl that isn't quite as sunny as her classmates.
* MerlinAndNimue: An inverted case. Negi is Yue's master (and the magister in the magister/minister relationship), though Yue is slightly older than Negi. Yue can empathize with Negi on a different level compared to many of Negi's other students, but her love for him is one-sided.
* MutualEnvy: Yue is jealous of both Nodoka and Makie for being cuter and girlier than she is. Nodoka reveals to Misora that she's jealous of Yue's ability to understand Negi and Makie tells Yue that she's envious of how straightforward she is with her feelings.
* NewTransferStudent: Yue got to play the part for a while in the Magic World.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The inbetween to Nodoka's nice and Haruna's mean. She may snark but she isn't too malicious about it, but isn't anywhere near Nodoka's level of nice either.
* OccultDetective: After the TimeSkip at the end of the manga.
* OddFriendship: The bubbly, optimistic Makie befriends the sardonic Yue in the final major arc. The two note that they haven't really talked all that much despite being Baka Rangers. She also couldn't be much more different from Haruna if she tried.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She's fifteen, but looks only slightly older than Negi.
* ParentalAbandonment: The [[CynicismCatalyst death of her beloved grandfather]] had such a negative effect on her that she shut herself off from the rest of the world. Since he's the only family member mentioned in Yue's life, it's possible he was the only one she had.
* ThePhilosopher: She normally averts the inaction bit of the trope, but it's noted that for all her high speed thinking she tends to get sidetracked and think about pointless things easily.
* PottyEmergency: Since she drinks juice so often, she always seems to be in the bathroom. It's suggested that Yue wears more "adult" underwear as a result.
* PreciousPhoto: Yue keeps a photo of her grandfather in a small locket.
* PuttingOnMyThinkingCap: She seems to have the most going on in her head when she's calmly sipping an odd drink of some kind with a slightly blank look in her eyes.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Hinted at, since her parents are never mentioned and her grandfather's death had a deep impact on her life.
* RedMage: While she primarily favors offensive magic, she also has a number of support and healing spells.
* RobeAndWizardHat: Her default pactio outfit gives her a long, open robe and a witch's hat.
* SecretlySelfish: Part of the LoveTriangle angst that Yue experiences is due to wanting to take Negi for herself, but refusing to bypass her best friend's feelings for it. After she gives Negi advice on waiting until graduation to give Nodoka a reply to her LoveConfession, she's horrified at how it actually benefits herself more than Nodoka. The two come to an understanding when Nodoka finds out about Yue's feelings.
* ShockAndAwe: After she starts training in magic, this is her preferred element, with side orders of [[LightEmUp light]] and [[BlowYouAway wind]]. She seems to take after her master.
* ShorterMeansSmarter: Her lack of height is the most emphasized in the main cast and she's also the most analytical and intelligent character barring Negi himself.
* TheSlacker: She tends to not put a lot of effort into what she does, especially school. As she discovers magic, she slowly overcomes this trope and shows off just how smart she really is.
* TheSmartGirl: If you need a plan, she probably already has five.
* TheSnarkKnight: Initially a textbook example, complete with frequent thoughts of being "{{surrounded by idiots}}". These wane later on, as she became part of the main group and developed a crush on Negi, though she's still quick to dissociate herself from the group whenever the insanity becomes overwhelming.
* SourOutsideSadInside: She's the most dour student in class 3-A next to Evangeline, and there are hints that she hasn't completely recovered from her grandfather's death. [[spoiler:While the LotusEaterMachine visions of most of the girls feature their love interests, Yue's instead focuses on her with her grandfather as a child]].
* TheStoic: She tends to be very calm and in control of her emotions [[NotSoStoic until she feels she's let Nodoka down]] or [[LuminescentBlush Negi gets too charming.]] She also doesn't handle [[spoiler:Emily's apparent death]] well either.
* StraightMan: In contrast to the quiet and polite Nodoka and the ridiculous Haruna, Yue tends to be quietly sarcastic.
* StrawNihilist: She felt that the world was without meaning following the death of her grandfather. Luckily, she got better when she befriended Nodoka, Haruna, and Konoka.
* StupidSexyFlanders: A downplayed but surprising example. Emily [[LuminescentBlush catches herself]] thinking that Yue is cute and berates herself for it.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She appears to be [[EmotionlessGirl emotionless]], but she cares very much about her friends and being part of a LoveTriangle with her best friend causes her to break down and reveal a very warm side.
* TeenGenius: Not only is Yue one of the smartest girls in Class 3-A, she's also one of the smartest characters in the entire series.
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: She once cheated during a pillow fight by hiding thick dictionaries in her pillows.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** At the start of the series she was a muggle and before going to the magic world she still wasn't as good as Negi was at the beginning of the series. Perhaps Yue's most badass moment is during the Mahora Festival Arc. The party's progress is blocked by one of their teachers, '[[ScaryShinyGlasses Death Specs]]' Takahata, who begins to attack with no mercy. Sensing something is off, Yue calls him out and ''[[HitMeDammit dares Takahata to hit her]]''. He does - ''hard''. But Yue gets up and, holding her bleeding and bruised face, concludes that the man before them could not possibly be the real Takahata, because he would never harm his students in that way. She calmly looks up a spell in her encyclopaedia for [[ShatteringTheIllusion shattering illusions]] and casts it, and sure enough it's all fake. She saves her party in one fell swoop, performs a staggering mental leap in a highly tense situation, and even though she's no fighter, she takes a beating in the process ''just to prove her theory''. Badass.
** Once in the Magic World, she enrolled in the Ariadne Academy for knights due to amnesia-based lack of direction. With her memories not holding her effort back, she puts in some amazingly hard work and within about a month becomes the academy's top student and plans out the successful defeat of a griffin dragon.
** During the chapters of the manga there's a brief skip forward to what Yue is doing now. She has invented a completely safe, liquid-based Magia Erebea-like spell storage and release system. While she doesn't seem to get the physical benefits Negi does, Yue also doesn't seem to get any of the physical detriments. All she needs to do is take a swig of a potion, and she has a bunch of spells for instant cast whenever the hell she wants.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: It's subtle but she distances herself from the crazy antics of her classmates less and less as the series goes on and smiles a bit more.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She's often shown with a juice of outlandish composition in hand, though the actual contents are always different.
* TransformationSequence: In her spin-off {{OVA}} she gets a long pactio equipping scene. Her bra seems to pity her.
* TsurimeEyes: Fitting with her snarky and unsocial nature are her serious looking eyes.
* VerbalTic: Overuses ''desu'' and speaks like [[SesquipedalianLoquaciousness an encyclopedia]].
* WeakButSkilled: She doesn't have much in the way of raw power yet, but she's already an expert in magical theory despite the short time she's had to really learn about it. Taking down a griffin dragon with a ceremonial knife by exploiting tiny weak points? Yes, please.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Future Yue's potion power-up comes with one major weakness, namely that she only has so much time before all that liquid she drinks runs its course and leaves her with the natural consequences.
* WhenSheSmiles: Yue rarely breaks beyond a smirk or a smile of contentment, but Makoto brings attention to a photo of her and Negi where she's smiling with all her heart and how great it is.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Yue and Negi (who is also this trope) have a discussion during the SchoolFestival arc about the consequences of their actions, namely the ButterflyEffect and why history was changed in their century and not the [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarI one]] [[UsefulNotes/WorldWarII before]].
* WorthlessForeignDegree: In the epilogue Yue runs into this problem as [[{{Terraform}} ISS]][[SpaceElevator DA]] didn't accept her degree and career history from MagicWorld.

Chachamaru is a robot designed by Chao and Hakase with a magic-based power source fueled by Evangeline, her master. Despite looking older than many of her classmates, she is in fact the youngest person in the cast at only two years of age. She tends to appear emotionless, but is very kind and helpful. She also likes to tease Evangeline with a completely straight face. She has a crush on Negi, which causes issues for her since she's forced into conflict with him twice before she's able to act as an ally. During the second incident, she makes friends with Chisame despite the latter's irritation with anything outside the ordinary, which definitely extends to humanoid robots going to middle school.\
\
Chachamaru is designed to be quite tough and appears to know some form of martial arts. She also has many weapons hidden inside her body and as a robot has information warfare capabilities. Her artifact from Negi is ''Al-Iskandariyah'', an [[KillSat orbital laser cannon]].
----
* AndroidIdentifier: Her large robotic ears, which Chisame points out. Her sisters also have these.
* AnimalMotifs: She has an association with the better qualities of cats. They even feature into her pactio.
* AntiMagic: Chachamaru is equipped with tools specifically to counter mages. She can cancel magical traps in just a few seconds and she rendered Ryoumen-Sukuna-no-Kami defenseless after a well-placed barrier-breaking shell.
* ArmCannon: Part of her new {{Swiss Army Appendage}}s from her MidSeasonUpgrade.
* BadassAdorable: This RobotGirl can make a KillSat look really cute.
* BadLiar: When her teasing antics are turned against her, she gets badly flustered and makes some incredibly transparent denials.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Trying to harm a sick Negi while Chachamaru is around is a very bad idea. It's perhaps the only time [[NiceGirl Chachamaru]] has actually looked angry.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Chachamaru is part of the rescue team that is sent by the headmaster of Mahora, Konoemon Konoe, to defeat Chigusa Amagasaki.
** When Negi, Nodoka and Yue attempt to find out what "hint" Nagi left behind in Mahora and a dragon attacks them, Chachamaru appears in time to get them to safety.
* BigLittleSister: Chachamaru was built with the appearance of a teenage girl, but she's merely two years old. Her "older sister", Eva's doll Chachazero, is a ''centuries'' old normal-sized doll.
* {{BFG}}: Her body contains weaponry and thus she can morph her arm into a cannon.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Part of her new {{Swiss Army Appendage}}s from her MidSeasonUpgrade.
* BloodFromTheMouth: After Quartum cuts her in two she begins leaking hydraulic fluid from her mouth since she doesn't have actual blood.
* CatGirl: When her Pactio card is engaged, Chachamaru gains a costume with kitty ears and a cable that looks like a tail at her back.
* CharacterDevelopment: Chachamaru begins to discover emotions and what they mean, as well as making friends with people other than Evangeline and her creators. She finds a goal in life and dedicates herself to that cause.
* CovertPervert: She feels pleasure from being refueled via the key in the back of her head, which grows more intense as more magical energy is put in. After Negi fails to realize the awkward parts of this, she apparently starts looking forward to it, which Asakura teases her about. For her part, she wonders if she's heading down the wrong path in life.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Green hair and eyes.
* DoAndroidsDream: One of her biggest fears is the idea that her feelings are artificial, that she's nothing more than a machine. Discussing it with Negi drives her to tears. Negi puts her fears to rest by forming a Pactio with her, proving once and for all that she has a soul. Her Pactio title even translates to "Dreaming Doll".
* EmotionlessGirl: Although she is less 'emotionless' and more 'expressionless'. She has emotions, but her face doesn't display it very well.
* EyeBeams: One of her abilities. She frequently uses these for her ranged attacks.
* FanservicePack: Halfway through the story, Hakase equips her with a realistic skin to hide her robotic body, making her look like, well, pretty much a normal woman. It doesn't take long for it to be shown in a bath scene.
* FantasticArousal: The key winding gives physical pleasure similar to that of a pactio, only it lasts longer, can be more intense if more energy is added and has to be done every day if she's to be in top performance.
* FriendToAllChildren: When Negi and Asuna followed her in an early chapter, they found her surrounded by a lot of children who're playing with her while she goes around doing good deeds, like handing a balloon stuck in a tree back to the little girl who lost it.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Along with helping all the townspeople as above, she also feeds a ton of cats, which all seem to love her.
* TheGadfly: After awhile it becomes clear that she's apparently fond of teasing Eva in a completely deadpan manner.
* GlassCannon: Al-Iskandariya is quite possibly Ala Alba's most powerful weapon, but it does nothing for her defenses. So, with a full power blast, she not only knocked out Fate's shields, she knocked him out for a good ten minutes. In a single blow. And was immediately hit with a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown from Quartum.
* GrewBeyondTheirProgramming: Hakase was surprised when Chachamaru started feeling things like love and embarrassment and even [[SoProudOfYou decked her in the face for prying into her secrets]].
* HimeCut: One of her YamatoNadeshiko traits is this hairstyle; even bangs above her eyes, long sidetails and long length down her back. Perhaps Hakase and Chao wanted to reinforce this perception of her to others.
* HumanizingTears: She has a breakdown over [[DoAndroidsDream whether or not she has a soul because she's a robot]]. Negi actually uses her tears as proof that she ''does'' have a soul.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She's uncomfortable with showing her body when it looks obviously robotic, but after she gets artificial skin she's completely confused by Negi asking her to PleasePutSomeClothesOn.
* InsecureLoveInterest: As a robot, she feels any potential romance with Negi is hopeless. It's also not helped by the fact she's actually only two years old.
* KindheartedCatLover: One of the first hints we get that Chachamaru is a lot nicer than being the minion of a vampire lord would suggest is her attitude towards cats.
* MachineBlood: After being bisected by Quatrum, she "bleeds" coolant.
* MachineMonotone: Chachamaru is a RobotGirl and fittingly, speaks in a monotone.
* {{Magitek}}: She runs partially on magic.
* MeaningfulName: "Cha" is a common pronunciation of the Japanese character for "tea"; "karakuri" literally translates into "mechanism". The translated title for her pactio, Dreaming Doll, also ties in to her character arc.
* MoralityPet: Evangeline's treatment of her is one of the many signs that [[NobleDemon she's not as evil as she says]]. Sure, she picks on her, but she's also nearly her mother.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: She came into conflict with Negi twice despite her obvious feelings for him. Both times were because she was unwilling to act against her parents or master.
* MySensorsIndicateYouWantToTapThat: Apparently, [[TheGadfly just to pick on them]], Chachamaru starts indicating the obvious signs of attraction the girls are feeling.
* NobleTopEnforcer: During the early arc where Eva was a villain, Chachamaru acted as the amoral vampire girl's obedient minion because she was made to be Eva's combat partner and can't go against her master's wish of attacking Negi. When Negi and Asuna follow her around, however, they discover Chachamaru is basically a saint who helps children, old ladies and stray cats. Negi and Asuna are moved to tears by Chachamaru's great kindness until Chamo reminds them that she's still their enemy's servant.
* OddFriendship: With Chisame. It started after the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, when the two of them accompanied Negi during the festival for a while. [[FriendlyRivalry Even after they were on opposing sides]], Chachamaru made sure to stay in contact with Chisame and dragged her along to the Ala Alba meetings.
* OurNudityIsDifferent: The first time Negi sees her undressed, Chachamaru gets uncomfortable because her robotic parts are fully exposed. Later on, she's given an artificial skin texture that fully covers her mechanic body, so she no longer thinks there's anything to be embarrassed about when Negi sees her naked, but Negi thinks she's ought to be even more modest now that she looks much closer to a human.
* PickYourHumanHalf: When the series started, she had obvious mechanical joints, antenna ears and with only a human looking face, but also possessed the full emotional spectrum even if she couldn't always express it well. Later, though, she does look more or less completely human, retaining only the ears.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: For being a robot.
* RescueRomance: Chachamaru started to have interest in Negi after he [[TakingTheBullet took the bullet]] from his own attack after he couldn't bring himself to hurt her.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: She wasn't ''supposed'' to be one, [[InstantAIJustAddWater but she is]]. Hakase programmed her with rudimentary emotions and to mimic human activities she cannot perform otherwise like drinking tea, but she was ''not'' supposed to develop subjectivity, which is the basis of the majority of her CharacterDevelopment.
* {{Robosexual}}: Teased at. She has obvious feelings for Negi and feels an equivalent to sexual pleasure, but the idea of making a move on him doesn't even seem to occur to her. As far as being 'anatomically correct' goes, she refused upgrades several times.
* RobotAntennae: She has antennae in place of ears. Chisame is frustrated that she's the [[MetaGuy only one who seems to notice this]].
* RobotGirl: She is a very beautiful female magic robot. At first, her body has obvious mechanic parts and joints that are mostly covered by her clothes. Later on, her body gets remodelled and given a synthetic skin that makes her look far more human. Although, her arms and legs are painted black, which makes it look like she's wearing long gloves and thigh-high stockings.
* RobotHair: She has hair which is pastel green. It's a synthetic material which functions as her heat sink, but only the color visually distinguishes it from normal hair. Hakase tried giving her more trendy hair in chapter 75, but, well... she IS a mad scientist.
* RobotNames: Her surname "Karakuri" means "mechanism".
* RocketPunch: Usually played for laughs, such as punching Hakase for checking out her memory files that she wanted kept private.
* SexySecretary: Volunteers to work as Negi's secretary while [[spoiler:he works on the space elevator plan.]] It's a long-term project with a lot of work involved and therefore suitable for an immortal being that doesn't require sleep.
* SiblingYinYang: Chachazero is a bloodthirsty, sadistic puppet without many emotions or feelings of love. Chachamaru on the other hand is quiet, reserved, and wouldn't hurt a fly unless she absolutely had to.
* StatuesqueStunner: She is 174cm tall and has one of the more adult figures of the class.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her Pactio gives her a skin-tight outfit that shows off most of her abdomen and legs.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She's obviously a kind person and recognized as such, but she's almost always monotone and expressionless if not at an emotional peak.
* SwissArmyAppendage: Her new body's arms can [[MorphWeapon morph]] into [[ArmCannon assault rifles]] or [[BladeBelowTheShoulder swords]] -- and morph [[ShapeshifterWeapon ''back'' into arms]].
* TearsFromAStone: Her lens-cleaning fluid serves all the same purposes that tears normally would (keeping the eyes moist and expressing strong emotions). Negi actually uses them as evidence that she has a soul during her existential crisis.
-->'''Negi:''' Those tears you shed are real.
* TinMan: She keeps telling everyone this in SpockSpeak. Subverted in that nobody believes her as she's one of the friendliest people in the cast from the beginning. Even her own MadScientist creator realizes right away that she's different. This is because one of the programmers of her operating system was from a lesser-known work of the writer, ''Manga/AILoveYou'', where he had designed an artificial intelligence program fully capable of emotions. This is only alluded to in [[ShoutOut one offhand comment]] in the manga.
* TinmanTypist: She has a few types of cords embedded in her finger for just this purpose. Never seen typing once, though.
* TokenRobot: She's a student of 3-A who also happens to be a RobotGirl.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Played with. Because she can take more damage it's not unusual for this to be shown. She gets cut in half by Quartum at one point because he doesn't view her as alive. The scene is completely brutal with the level of violence inflicted upon her viewed as being as unacceptable as happening to anyone else especially with the damage shown: Her innards are showing, including a structural spine and MachineBlood everywhere.
* WildCard: Because of the whole "MyMasterRightOrWrong" thing conflicting with her desire to help Negi, Chachamaru was this. However, when the Magic World Arc began, there was no doubt about her loyalty to Negi anymore, especially after she formed a pactio with him.
* WindUpKey: She needs to be wound up every so often. It feels very good to her, so it often causes her embarrassment in the hands of an overenthusiastic winder.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Seeing as how she was created to be acquiescent, it is not surprising that she would have this sort of SilkHidingSteel programming; she fits many of the physical requirements as well such as HimeCut. She's also part of the same tea ceremony club as Evangeline.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: The only character who is younger than Negi because she was built to look the age she does. During the ball, she also points out to an angsting Natsumi that she isn't the only one with issues. She's two years old, so what life experience could she have?

Asuna's bubbly, energetic friend and roommate. She's the heir of a rich and prominent noble family, specifically a fictionalized version of the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konoe_family Konoe family]] itself a branch of the ancient and aristocratic Fujiwara clan which has provided marriages for the Imperial family and once effectively ruled Japan. She is also granddaughter of Mahora's headmaster, Konoemon. Unknown to her, they are also a line of powerful magi, and she has the potential to match her ancestors: Her raw magical capacity surpasses that of Negi himself, though she isn't able to utilize it particularly well for combat purposes.\

After being let in on the secret, she started training to become the group medic, though her role gradually lessened into orbiting around Setsuna.\
\
Konoka's artifacts from Negi are ''Flabellum Euri, Flabellum Australe'' (''Kochi no Hiougi, Hae no Suehiro'' - Fan of the East Wind, Fan of the South Wind), a pair of folded paper fans that supplement her healing capabilities. Flabellum Euri can heal any non-instantly fatal injury her target suffered in the last three minutes; she also can split up the effect (and its effectiveness) to multiple targets. Flabellum Australe removes any illness (or negative "status effects" like petrification) that was caused in the last 30 minutes. In addition to the fans, she is given a white kariginu robe with magical protective properties.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Setsuna is the only one, though, who calls her Kono-chan.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She seems to swing both ways. When her grandfather sent her to [[ArrangedMarriage omiai]] (Japanese marriage interviews), she was more concerned about the age difference. She also wouldn't mind Negi as her partner, and is very attracted to his older form. And of course, she also is very attracted to her childhood friend, Setsuna.
* BestFriend: She's been Asuna's best friend for at least a few years.
* ChildhoodFriends: She was close friends with Setsuna when they were kids, although Setsuna distanced herself from Konoka for a long time until they reconcile in the Kyoto arc. Both secretly [[ChildhoodFriendRomance want more than friendship]].
* CoolBigSis: Chamo's Love Chart reveals that Konoka scored most of her affection points towards Negi in familial love and friendship. Similar to Asuna, she and Negi are more LikeBrotherAndSister.
-->'''Konoka:''' Ever since Negi-kun came, it's like I've gotten a cute little brother, and that's why I'm happy. ♡
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Dark brown hair to go with her dark brown eyes.
* DamselInDistress: She was captured during the Kyoto arc before she had begun awakening her powers in order to fuel the revival of a massive demon god.
* DatePeepers: She really enjoyed watching Negi and Asuna's test-date. Also joins the other girls watching Negi and Nodoka.
* DemotedToSatelliteLoveInterest: Konoka was introduced as Asuna's roommate and a second older sister figure to Negi. From the Kyoto arc onward, however, Konoka isn't given any purpose in the series other than being the target of Setsuna's BodyguardCrush. While Konoka eventually does get a role in Negi's team as TheMedic, she still never has significant interactions with anyone but Setsuna. Even Konoka's decision to become a Magister Magi mainly serves for her to form an official partnership with Setsuna, complete with a Pactio kiss.
* DieOrFly: Sort of. Konoka's latent powers are unconsciously used for the first time during the Kyoto trip when Setsuna is TakingTheBullet for Konoka and Konoka jumps down from a roof to soften Setsuna's fall and heal her wounds.
* DontCallMeSir: She doesn't like being called ojou-sama by Setsuna.
* FamilyThemeNaming: ''Kono''ka Konoe, granddaughter of ''Kono''emon Konoe.
* FirstFriend: She and Setsuna are this to each other. Because of her past as a crow demon who was cast out of her hometown, Konoka was surely the first to ever befriend and play with little Setsuna in their childhood.
* FirstNameBasis:
** With her best friend and roommate Asuna.
** Also with her other best friend and potential LoveInterest, Setsuna. Setsuna and Konoka have known each other before school, but Setsuna stopped calling Konoka by her name after Setsuna distanced herself from Konoka. The two of them restore their friendship during the Kyoto trip, although Setsuna still has a habit to call Konoka "ojou-sama". Only privately or amongst her closest friends does Setsuna refer to Konoka as "[[AffectionateNickname Kono-chan]]".
* FortuneTeller: She likes to tell fortunes as a hobby, but most of the time she makes things up out of pure amusement.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Konoka is the Sanguine of the Library Exploration Club quartet, being the perky and compassionate member of the club.
* TheGadfly: She loves teasing her friends, especially early on it seemed like she [[ShipperOnDeck shipped Negi and Asuna]]. When [[ClingyJealousGirl Anya]] arrived, she teased Anya about her very obvious feelings for Negi.
* GenkiGirl: She's very energetic and also very carefree.
* GiveHerANormalLife: Despite possessing extreme magical potential, her father opted to keep her in the dark about it. He knew it wouldn't last forever, though.
* TheGlomp: She tends to deliver tackling hugs to Setsuna (or other characters occasionally).
* HealingHands: Her pactio operates along the lines of her laying on hands to an injured person and curing any injury they have taken. Her normal healing works differently.
* HimeCut: As part of her classical {{Ojou}} image, Konoka has blunt bangs, waist-length sidelocks, and classic length straight hair.
* InstantArmor: Konoka's artifact comes with a white kariguni robe, which posseses magical protective properties.
* IntimateHealing: Konoka's ultimate ability with her artifact lets her perform a Shinto ritual (''A purification ritual to Ibuki-donushi''), where she prays to the gods and offers her "life" to them (in the form of a mitegura [[labelnote:Explanation]]A cloth that contains food and drink.[[/labelnote]]) to bless her target and completely heal it. In its first usage in chapter 188, it looks like she hugs Negi while being naked, though only for a short moment.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeFashionable: She has Setsuna dress as a [[UsefulNotes/TheShinsengumi Shinsegumi]] officer at Kyoto cinema town because she knows Setsuna makes for a very nice {{Bifauxnen}}. She also thinks Setsuna looks cute in casual girly clothes on the rare occasion where Setsuna wears something other than her school uniform or a suit.
* JumpedAtTheCall: She was already interested in fortune telling and the occult, so finding out she's an heiress to a family of powerful mages sat well with her.
* LadyAndKnight: Konoka is the sweet-natured Bright Lady with healing powers who is threatened by bad guys several times so her White Knight Setsuna comes to her rescue.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Konoka's father Eishun was the Shinmeiryuu swordsman of Ala Rubra, basically playing the role Setsuna plays for Ala Alba. Jack Rakan describes Eishun as too serious, prone to get careless, and [[DistractedByTheSexy weak to erotic stuff]]; a description that also fits Setsuna. [[spoiler:The epilogue indirectly confirms Konoka marries Setsuna in the future.]]
* LipstickLesbian: While paired off with Setsuna, Konoka is still very girly.
* LonelyRichKid: She was raised in a mansion deep within the mountains and apparently never went to school until she arrived at Mahora Academy. Setsuna was her only childhood playmate, but that didn't last long because Setsuna dedicated all her time to her Shinmeiryuu training to never fail to protect Konoka.
* LoveFreak: Tends to get giddy and hyper when the other girls start talking about love.
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: Konoka, as a princess of the Old World, was the vital key for Chigusa Amagasaki's plans, as she kidnaps and uses Konoka's untapped powers to unleash an ancient sealed demon god under her control, to take over the Kansai Magical Association. Setsuna manages to take back Konoka, though, and Chigusa and her demon god are defeated by Eva, Chachamaru and Chachazero. After the Kyoto arc, Konoka's powers are only sporadically mentioned and no longer a vital key component.
* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: The feminine to Setsuna's masculine. Whenever the two dress up, Konoka wears a dress while Setsuna wears a suit.
* TheMedic: Her role in the team; she pushes the trope so far that she acts like a WhiteMagicianGirl and often appears in the standard red-rimmed white garb of the Japanese RPG white mage.
* ModestRoyalty: Despite being a rich {{Ojou}}, she chooses to live as the other students and has so far used her vast fortune only once in the series.
* NakedApron: In [[CovertPervert Setsuna's]] dream in the LotusEaterMachine, Konoka is wearing nothing but an apron and cooking Setsuna breakfast while sleepy.
* NiceGirl: Never has a bad thing to say about anyone, though she isn't above a little teasing every now and then.
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: The nice to Asuna's mean and Setsuna's inbetween. Asuna is fairly unpleasant and Setsuna is distant, driving Konoka to get both of them to open up more.
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: She's perpetually cheerful and smiling, including when making morbid jokes.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She tends to be very clingy and huggy with Setsuna, much to her embarrassment.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Tends to play TheDitz, and while there's no denying that she's a bit flaky, she often knows a lot more than anyone gives her credit for.
* {{Ojou}}: Konoka is the heiress of the Konoe family that leads the Magic Associations in Japan, making them very wealthy and influential.
* OppositesAttract: Konoka is carefree, bubbly and likes to tease, in contrast with her bodyguard and eventual partner Setsuna who is disciplined, very formal and easily embarrassed.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Konoka is actually blessed with more mana and magical power ''than Negi''. It isn't obvious because she doesn't [[TrainingFromHell train as hard]] as him nor go through drastic measures like him to acquire more power, like when he chose to learn Magia Erebea.
* PerpetualSmiler: She constantly smiles because she's just that happy and carefree, but in the rare instances it's gone, something's up. She's not above [[StepfordSmiler hiding her sadness behind a warm smile either]].
* PrincessesPreferPink: During her princess moments, she often wears a pink kimono.
* {{Protectorate}}: Setsuna is determined to protect her.
* RepetitiveName: Her first and last name both start with "Kono-". Also [[AlliterativeName alliterative]].
* SecretlyWealthy: The fortune of the Konoe family is close to the [[Fiction500 fabulously wealthy]] Yukihiro family. Not that any of Konoka's friends knew about this until they visited her BigFancyHouse in Kyoto.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: It's implied that Setsuna first consciously realized how attractive Konoka had become when she saw her dressed up in a [[KimonoFanservice fancy kimono]] in cinema town. [[TransparentCloset Not that she was willing to acknowledge it just yet...]]
-->'''Setsuna:''' Ojousama really has grown into a beautiful young woman. Why am I so shaken up?
* SpoiledSweet: She grew up in a BigFancyHouse with many servants and has a personal bodyguard who treats her like a princess, but Konoka never makes a big deal out of it and is one of the nicest girls in the class.
* SwordAndSorcerer: Konoka is TheMedic, who lacks a bit of offensive power and thus is [[ShootTheMedicFirst a frequent target]] for enemies. However, before they can attack her, they'll have to go through the swordswoman Setsuna first.
* TalentedButTrained: After she learns that she has an exceptional magical potential, she studies in earnest to use her healing powers for the betterment of the world and to become a Magister Magi. [[spoiler:She succeeds]].
* TaremeEyes: She has very rounded eyes that reflect her cheerful personality in contrast to the more serious Setsuna, whose eyes often [[TsurimeEyes look much sharper]].
* TheTease: She enjoys making flirty but innocent sounding comments around Setsuna.
* TownGirls: The Femme. Konoka is a sweet {{Ojou}} whose abilities entirely focus on healing, in contrast to the {{Action Girl}}s Asuna and Setsuna.
* UptownGirl: Konoka is the heiress to a noble family in Kyoto. Her childhood friend and love interest Setsuna is an exiled member of a crown tribe who has been appointed as her personal bodyguard. The social gap between the two is the main reason Setsuna doesn't believe she will ever be truly together with Konoka.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: She is a healer, Setsuna's LoveInterest and has motherly tendencies.

[[folder:Ku Fei]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Hazuki Tanaka (Japanese, anime series), Creator/KanaAsumi (Japanese, OVA onwards), and Creator/CynthiaCranz (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Sari Okamoto
[[quoteright:289:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_8721.JPG]]

Ku Fei is a Chinese exchange student with incredible skill in martial arts and immense strength. Seeing her skill, Negi asks her to teach him kenpo, which he picks up at a rate she considers unfair. Because she starts the series unable to use ki, she tends to lag behind the heavier hitters like Kaede despite being considered her superior when it comes to sheer skill in martial arts.\
\
Her grades don't match her physical ability in the slightest and she speaks with an accent. She also has a rather straightforward and friendly personality. She gains a pactio from Negi in the Magic World arc, giving her a magic extending staff that greatly increases her combat abilities.
----
* AdaptationalWeaponSwap: The first anime had Ku Fei getting tonfas from her Pactio with Negi. In the manga, her artifact is a TelescopingStaff instead.
* AnimeChineseGirl: She usually wears a UsefulNotes/{{qipao}} and knows martial arts. She even puts her hair up in a pair of {{odango}} sometimes.
* BareFistedMonk: She is a good fist figther and wipes the floor with weapon-users routinely.
* BerserkButton: A minor one, but the only time in the story she gets annoyed is when Asakura mentions how unsexy her body is.
* BestHerToBedHer: Ku is only allowed to marry someone who was able to beat her (or at least she tells herself so). She pines for Negi, who she knows is clearly stronger than her, but unfortunately, he is not interested.
* BookDumb: By her own admission, Ku Fei is good at "everything but studying", to the point where, when it becomes a concern of the other girls that Negi might be developing a crush on her, they initially dismiss it because they think she's an idiot.
* CannotKeepASecret: She's told to keep a secret during Mahorafest twice, once regarding Albireo's true identity and another time regarding Chao planning to leave the class. She blurts it out almost instantly both times.
* TheCaptain: She is the captain of the martial arts club.
* DumbBlonde: Zigzagged. Although she has poor grades and the hair color to match, she's very good at basically anything else. Given that Japanese is not her first language, this is likely one reason she's one of the Baka Rangers.
* DumbMuscle: PlayedWith. She's easily the brawniest girl in the class, but as one of the Baka Rangers, also not too bright. However Ku does show insight in areas outside of school, and it is suggested at times that because she's not Japanese, the language barrier holds her back academically.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: In a world filled with [[FantasyKitchenSink mages, vampires, half-demons, ninjas, robots]] and other beings somewhat cognizant of magic, she achieved [[BadassNormal exceptional strength in battle]] [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower by training a lot]] in her chosen style. Once the difficulty spiked for her, she started using ki rather than pure martial arts as well as making a Pactio with Negi. Her relative weakness often makes her more impressive looking in universe
-->'''Chisame:''' "She's just close enough to human that we can tell how ridiculously good she is."
* {{Expy}}: Of Kaolla Su from ''Manga/LoveHina'' in terms of appearance and personality.
* FlashStep: Against Mana, during the ''[=MahoraFest=] Tournament''. It's a form of Hakkyokuken's/Bajiquan's "vital step".
* GirlishPigtails: Her hair is bound up in spiky tails.
* HeirToTheDojo: She is the successor to the Ku warrior clan. [[spoiler:And as of the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue, she has since set up a dojo to accommodate challengers and future followers alike.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser: She weaponized cloth in her fight with Mana.
* InsecureLoveInterest: It's exactly because she knows she's BookDumb that she feels insecure whether Negi would accept her as a potential marriage partner. She is not even sure if she just likes how [[{{Determinator}} hard-working]] and strong he is, telling herself that he is too young and actually not her type. Considering how embarassed she is about her feelings for Negi though (like when she helped burn Chamo's Love Chart where she was placed 6th), she's only trying to fool herself.
* KungFuKid: As far as martial arts go she's basically the highest level fighter in the group, but her control of ki lags behind the rest of the group.
* LoveConfession: She confesses to Negi in chapter 346... [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments with a mouth full of food]].
* MonkeyKingLite: She's basically a GenderFlipped version of Sun Wukong. She is a Chinese warrior who wields a TelescopingStaff, which in-story is a replica of the one used by Sun Wukong himself. Reinforcing the Sun Wukong inspiration is that Ku Fei also works as a bodyguard, much like how Sun Wukong served as the protector of Xuanxang and the other members of his group.
* MsFanservice: Starting in Chapter 55, when she is first seen in a non-school outfit. The formal qipao she wears when she gets her Pactio also counts, even though it is quite long, but the cut is also quite high so it shows off her legs and socks nicely.
* NiceGirl: She gets along quite well with the entire class and Negi too.
* RedHerring: Her being Chinese was once believed to be a clue that she could have been Chao’s ancestor alongside Negi. This theory was promptly dismissed due to Chao’s nationality being extraterrestrial in nature.
* TeacherStudentRomance: An interesting case, considering [[InstantExpert Negi]] very early on surpasses her. Her feelings for him are also sadly one-sided.
* VerbalTic: She uses "Aru" instead of the proper sentence endings, which is anime code for "I am an anime character with a Chinese accent." In official translations, she gets HulkSpeak instead while fan translations leave it untranslated. For some reason, she loses it in the first anime.
* WaifFu: She looks rather scrawny, but when she flexes muscles suddenly start bulging everywhere.
* YouNoTakeCandle: She turns into this starting from around Volume 7 of the English manga, possibly to make it clear that she's Chinese rather than Japanese. Prior to that she speaks like a normal schoolgirl.

[[folder:Kaede Nagase]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/RyokoShiraishi (Japanese) and Creator/ClarineHarp (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Yuna Arai
[[quoteright:290:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_3639.JPG]]

Kaede is a chuu-nin-ranked shinobi from the Koga village. As a ninja of considerable skill, Kaede is generally a wise mentor figure to the group when she's not serving as its muscle. She is portrayed as more powerful than Negi himself in the early stages of the story despite initially not knowing about magic at all and it is not until a decent length into the story that Negi manages to catch up to and surpass her. Her grades are not that great, but she doesn't appear to be unintelligent. Rather, she apparently spends too much time training.\
\
Kaede fights using her ninja abilities, making her very fast, able to use many powerful shadow clones and having a high degree of strength and skill.\
\
She gains a pactio from Negi in the Magic World arc, giving her the artifact ''Tengu no Kakuremino'', a magic cloak that holds its own PocketDimension inside, complete with a house. It is used mostly as utility, conveniently turning Kaede into a sort of taxi service and protector for the non-combatant members of Ala Alba, though she has also used it to absorb attacks.
----
* TheAce: Kaede at first was stronger than Negi. She is one of Ala Alba's strongest fighters and known to be one of 3-A's four Martial Arts Masters.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: She uses a peculiar style of archaic speech patterns, notably ending her sentences with "de gozaru" or "nari" or referring to herself as "sessha" ("this one"), usually associated with Ninja or Samurai warriors. They are often left untranslated, or in the case of the anime, cut out entirely.
* BadassCape: Her artifact, Tengu no Kakuremino, takes the form of a ragged looking cloth worn as a cape.
* BadassInANiceSuit: During the ball she wears a nice suit rather than a dress because she wants to be able to move around easily.
* BigBreastPride: Subtle, but when Negi remarks that he thinks she's amazing, Kaede mistakenly thinks he's referring to her breasts.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** Kaede is part of the rescue team Yue called in, at the end of the Kyoto arc. She takes care of Kotarō and quickly defeats him.
** Subverted when Negi and Kotarō fight against Graf Wilhelm von Herrmann. She is present and observes the battle with Eva, but decides to not interfere.
* BigSisterInstinct: Towards Negi and Kotarō. The charts say that her romantic feelings for them are low, but the sisterly/motherly ones are [[ReadingsAreOffTheScale off the scale]]. She also seems to take care of the twins.
* BookDumb: She doesn't seem as dumb as Ku Fei and is a good strategist to boot. She still manages to be one of the five worst students in the class with the most commonly accepted explanation being that the {{Ninja}} training is probably interfering with her studies.
* DoppelgangerAttack: She's a ninja, so that was a given. During the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, Kaede was able to keep up to three shadow clones who were almost as strong as her, which impressed Albireo Imma so much that he was willing to use his artifact against her to not lose by vote.
* CoolBigSis: To Negi and Kotarō. Also to the Narutaki twins.
* CurbStompBattle:
** In her first "serious" fight in the manga, she encounters Kotarō and quickly makes him surrender. However, Kotarō WouldntHitAGirl, and Kaede even pointed out that she was still stronger than Negi (to whom Kotarō lost), so the result was obvious.
** Up until Kaede had to fight against Albireo Imma in the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament, she defeated everyone [[OneHitKill with one attack.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: So far she has only been seen with both eyes open about a dozen times; each time signifies [[LetsGetDangerous she means business]].
* FlashStep: Notable, because Kaede is the only one among the group who can do Shukuchi (ground contraction), the basis for Shundo. Unlike Shundo, it's not simply rapid movement, but the compression of leylines itself.
* FriendlyRivalry: With Mana. She's always eager to take her on, even if they're disguised as kids.
* FuumaShuriken: Her shuriken is at least six feet from tip to tip and provides the Page image.
* HaremNanny: Her romantic feelings are low, but her motherly feelings are very high. As a result, she's very protective and calm compared to the more emotional girls like Asuna or Ku Fei.
* HeirToTheDojo: Though it's only mentioned in [[AllThereInTheManual her character design notes]].
* IdiotHair: As one of the Baka Rangers, she gets to have an idiot hair. She seems smarter than most of the group though.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Kaede has NervesOfSteel, so she usually doesn't look much different besides sweating a bit, even if she suffers serious wounds. In one humorous case, Ku Fei accidentally smashes her full-force into a wall during a training session, when Kaede was distracted. She's bleeding profusely from her head, but her underreaction shocks Anya into speechlessness.
* NiceGirl: Kaede takes Negi in when he's feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of fighting Evangeline. She even keeps his secret even though he wasn't aware she found out.
* {{Ninja}}: Although she doesn't necessarily [[HighlyVisibleNinja stick out like a sore thumb]]. She's consistently one of the best fighters too. Until around midway through the Magic World arc, she was probably the strongest fighter in the group. During the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament semifinals she demonstrated the ability to stall Albireo so well that in order to avoid losing by votes in overtime he was forced to pull out his TooAwesomeToUse pactio[[note]]It can only be used for several minutes[[/note]] in order to subdue her non-lethally. In the Magic World finale, she had the best showing of any allied fighter not named Negi or Chachamaru by briefly matching Quintum before going for a non-combat victory.
* {{Sarashi}}: Being a {{Ninja}} and everything, she uses sarashi as a bra.
* SlipknotPonytail: Chao snatches her hair band to prove a point about the different levels of ability between the two and show Kaede can't hope to beat her.
* StatuesqueStunner: One of the tallest girls in the series with 183cm tall and the second-largest bust. [[LampshadeHanging She can't pass for her actual age at all.]]
* TsurimeEyes: 95% of the time, she's EyesAlwaysShut, but when she does open them, they are this shape.
* VaporWear: Just look at that picture. She is probably not wearing underwear.
* WalkingTheEarth: The WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue reveals that she has since become a wanderer helping her friends along the way when not training on Earth with Ku Fei.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's afraid of frogs. This is based on a pun that doesn't really translate.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: She can't get her student discount when trying to get into the movies because she looks like a young woman cosplaying as a student instead of a teenager. Luckily, she can use a ninja technique to make herself look ''much'' younger.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Haruna Saotome]]
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SawaIshige (Japanese) and Creator/JamieMarchi (English)
!!!'''Portrayed by:''' Ayumi Watanabe
[[quoteright:289:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s_gold_pactio_card_4691.JPG]]

Haruna is the final member of the Library Exploration Club to join Ala Alba after getting involved during Mahorafest, where she JumpedAtTheCall, much to Negi's terror. Unlike the other club members, Haruna seems motivated almost entirely by self-amusement and plays tricks on Yue and Nodoka for laughs even while attempting to help them get closer to Negi. Thus, she has little personal involvement in anything Ala Alba does, but she views it as a good way to have fun.\
\
Her personal artifact, ''Imperium Graphices'' - Empire of the Scrawl, allows her to bring to life anything that she draws in her book as a sort of SummonMagic. However, her creations are never particularly strong in battle (and she suffers a small percentage of damage that they take), so her creations are used more for utility, such as for travel, making Sayo a temporary robot body, and even intimidation tactics. Even so, Haruna is often the one who gets to mow down {{Mooks}}, usually with Ku Fei.
----
* ArtInitiatesLife: Her artifact is a magic sketchbook that makes anything she draws in it become real.
* ArtsyBeret: Haruna is an aspiring mangaka and her Artifact [[ArtInitiatesLife brings to life anything she draws in her sketchbook]]. Her Pactio outfit comes with a beret decorated by a feather.
* BigBreastPride: Haruna is quite happy about her figure, and doesn't mind showing it off every so often.
* CannotKeepASecret: This is the main reason why her friends kept her out of the loop for so long, and their reasoning is validated when she nearly spills the beans mere moments after she gets in on the fun.
* CoolAirship: During the Magical World arc, she is the one that purchases their mobile Home Base, the gold fish style airship, "Great Paru-sama". It has beds, showers, kitchen, etc. everything that wanted criminals need to stay on the run.
* CaptainObvious: When attacked by Shirabe, she helpfully points out the obvious fact that her violin blows stuff up and that she works for Fate. Lampshaded both times.
* DatePeepers: During Nodoka and Negi's date at the festival, she kept following them around trying to push them into a more "interesting" direction. Why? [[ItAmusedMe Because it's fun!]]
* FighterMageThief: The Fighter to Yue's Mage and Nodoka's Thief. While she relies on her artifact to do any real fighting, she's still the most action orientated of the three until late in the series.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Haruna is the Choleric of the Library Exploration Club quartet, being the hot-blooded and bossy member of the club.
* TheGadfly: Haruna is more aware of things like love, but also usually knows when it's just a misunderstanding. She thus likes messing with her friends, like when she makes golems of her friends that act out of character. It's usually all in good fun though, except for that one time at the SchoolFestival when Nodoka found out about Yue's MatchmakerCrush on Negi, and Haruna's teasing only made Yue feel worse.
* GenreSavvy: She has a pretty good idea of how a shounen manga is supposed to work due to her obvious otaku status.
* HairAntennae: She has hair antennae that seem to function as ''actual'' antennae, including the ability to home in on feelings of love.
* InSeriesNickname: Some of her classmates nickname her "Paru".
* ItAmusedMe: She has a tendency to act like a jerk and embarrass people for shits and giggles.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She doesn't have the most delightful personality and constantly teases her friends (especially Yue and Nodoka), but she cares about them a great deal and will try to act as a sister figure for them when the situation calls for it. When Yue freaks out about her crush on Negi, Haruna tries to assure her that she's overreacting and that there's nothing wrong with the way she feels. Her [[TearsOfJoy moment]] with Madoka late in the series also shows off her kinder side.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Her first reaction upon being let in on TheMasquerade was to depict the tortures she planned on doing to Nodoka and Yue for holding out on her, resulting in her missing out on previous adventures. When she found out that forming a pactio with Negi would get her an artifact as well, she immediately went and kissed him before Chamo could even start the circle needed to complete it. The only reason it didn't happen immediately after that is Negi tried to run off before she could kiss him again.
* TheMatchmaker: Started out pushing Nodoka heavily towards Negi, and then when she realized Yue also had a crush on Negi she backed off slightly and said she'd support both. Following this, she's begun pushing as many girls at Negi as possible as well as egging Natsumi on regarding Kotarō.
* MsFanservice: Though she doesn't get to show it off too often, Haruna has a very nice body for a teenage girl.
* MsViceGirl: It's generally PlayedForLaughs, but Haruna is often selfish, irresponsible, impulsive, rude and thoughtless. Though she does care about Nodoka and Yue at least, her attempts to help them with their love lives seem primarily motivated by amusement. She tags along to the action because it looks fun rather than really caring.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The mean to Nodoka's nice and Yue's inbetween. She loves to prank and tease other people, prompting her two friends to deal with her when she takes her meanness too far.
* PetTheDog: She gets a nice moment at the very climax when [[spoiler:her ship crashes in Mahora]] and she's extremely happy to see Madoka and gives her a huge hug.
* PowersDoTheFighting: Or rather her artifact does the fighting since she's otherwise a complete non-combatant with no physical or magical abilities.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Whenever an idea pops into her head, her glasses reveal her true nature.
* SecretChaser: She is rather fixated on finding out who, if anyone, Negi likes. Creepily, actually.
* SequentialArtist: She's an aspiring manga artist who draws {{doujin}}s of the popular MagicalGirl anime Mahou Shojo Biblion. And the thing she hates the most? Deadlines.
* ShipperOnDeck: Begins with Negi/Nodoka, though she stops pushing the two together when she becomes aware of Yue's crush and opts to support both. Later, she becomes a Konoka/Setsuna ''and'' Kotarō/Natsumi fan.
* TokenEvilTeammate: She seems completely uninterested in the actual goals of the group or helping people. She's also quite fond of making people look stupid and her long term goals include taking over the Magic World. She's friends with Yue and Nodoka, which is basically the whole reason she's in the group: They failed to keep the secret from her and she forced her way in.
* {{Troll}}: She absolutely loves messing with her friends, although she does have limits and will address serious situations with the right attitude.
* YaoiFangirl: She dragged Negi to the ''[[{{Doujinshi}} Comiket]]'' and showed him yaoi doujins of what appears to be ''Manga/SayonaraZetsubouSensei.''

Asakura is the local SchoolNewspaperNewshound and an aspiring IntrepidReporter. She discovered Negi's secret early on and loosely followed the events [[WildCard with no real affiliation]] apart from pursuit of interesting stories until integrating more fully into the group around the end of Mahorafest. She is Sayo's best friend and the two formed a partnership of sorts due to Sayo being almost completely undetectable, making her a great spy.\
\
She tagged along to the Magic World without having formed a pactio with Negi. As soon as they reunite, Negi decides to make one with her out of necessity, giving her ''Occulus Corvinus'' - Sight of the Black Raven; a set of six magical golems that allow her to communicate and gather information over long distances, making her perfect for searching for their missing companions and spying.
----
* ActionSurvivor: Despite being one of the few non-combative members of the group, Asakura (along with Sayo, another non-combatant) slowly but safely made it to a town where she grouped up with Negi again, when everyone was scattered by the Forced Transportation Magic.
* AnimeHair: Uhm, nice pineapple-shaped cut.
* BigBreastPride: She's pretty proud of her bust and is offended when Negi notices that developed as she is she's still no Shizuna.
* CameraFiend: Her class panics when being attacked by a ghost? She pulls out her camera immediately.
* CombatCommentator: She plays the referee during Mahorafest, though most of the more detailed commentary is done by someone else.
* {{Expy}}: To [[Manga/LoveHina Kitsune Konno]], with the nosy, busybody traits exaggerated.
* TheGadfly:
** Shows signs of this when she interviews Nodoka and blatantly asks her whether she slept with Negi, causing a SpitTake.
** Also starts to boast about her supposed FirstKiss with Negi, infuriating Chisame.
** She teases Chachamaru about Negi, when she replenishes Chachamaru with mana.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Even after she's graduated Sayo continues to be by her side. It's helped by the fact that Sayo can access places that Asakura can't while remaining undetected, perfect for a reporter.
* IntrepidReporter: Her interest in revealing Negi as a mage is what kicks off her involvement in the plot.
* LastNameBasis: No one really calls her by her first name.
* PetTheDog: Often rather amoral, [[EveryoneHasStandards but there are lines she won't cross,]] even for a big scoop. In the manga, she immediately switches to Negi's side when she learns her current actions are going to get him turned into an ermine while in the anime she refuses to post a story about Sayo because the pictures she took were of a miserable crying girl.
* SchoolNewspaperNewshound: She dreams of the big scoop that will really make a mark and her investigative abilities appear to be top notch.
* UnfazedEveryman: Asakura seems to occupy a special niche somewhere between Chisame and Haruna. On the one hand, you have Chisame who absolutely freaks about magic while on the other hand you have Haruna who is jumping for joy when she hears about it. Asakura? She feels like she could probably write a good story about it or something, but isn't really that interested in getting too involved and never begins learning magic like the likes of Yue or even Makie.
* UtilityPartyMember: Asakura is responsible for information gathering, scouting and spying, which is reflected in her non-combative artifact. This is one of the reasons Negi chose her as one of the three partners that accompanied him to Kurt Gödel, who wanted to [[ThanatosGambit bait Negi into killing him]]. Negi deliberately chose his investigative and non-combative partners and advisors.
* WildCard: Her pursuit of the truth and rather carefree moral compass can result in her switching sides easily, though she definitely has everyone's best interests at heart.

Sayo is class 3-A's resident ghost and a little too [[CuteGhostGirl cute]] and inept to be considered scary, despite her occasional efforts. Apart from being impossibly clumsy, she's also extremely difficult to detect. Upon being slightly noticed by Negi during a class vote, she attempted to make her presence known and after some mishaps more characters were able to see her fully and she became Asakura's best friend and assistant.\
\
She eventually gains a small doll that she can possess and joins Ala Alba as their [[StealthPun ghost member.]] She appears to have a bit of a crush on Negi, but this was never developed since post introduction they only spoke once or twice.
----
* CuteClumsyGirl: Tripping on flat pavement when you don't even have feet? That's pretty bad. Carries over to the little doll effigy as well.
* CuteGhostGirl: She's too incompetent to be scary, though she tries. Most of the class thinks she's too cute.
* FogFeet: Since she's a scary ghost, she gets scary ghost feet. And manages to trip over said nonexistent feet.
* FriendlyGhost: She's a ghost, but she's too nice and cute to be scary, and the only thing she wants is a friend.
* FunSize: She gets a tiny, cutesy doll body to inhabit right before going to the Magic World.
* GhostAmnesia: She remembers very little of her life, her death or any goals she might have that might be the reason she's hanging around. The first anime gave one version of her death, though.
* GhostlyChill: Nobody takes her seat because it's always so cold.
* HauntedFetter: Sayo can't travel far outside Mahora Academy. Later on, she is given a doll to possess, which lets her travel to the Magic World as well as providing a physical body to manipulate. In the epilogue, [[spoiler:it's stated she was eventually released from the school's grounds, but her {{Heterosexual Life Partner|s}} Kazumi became her new fetter of sorts.]]
* HeadPet: When she's possessing a small doll, she sometimes sits on people's heads, usually Asakura's.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Asakura, even long after she's graduated. Asakura wonders sometimes if she's being haunted, but Sayo is too sweet to do that.
* HitodamaLight: She tends to have little floaty lights around whenever she's being particularly ghostly.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Having been friendless and lonely for around 60 years, Sayo is very desperate for a friend. Unfortunately, her attempts of making friends are horribly misunderstood at first and her classmates freak out when they think a malicious spirit is haunting their classroom.
* JacobMarleyApparel: Wears a SailorFuku, probably the school uniform when she died back in 1940.
* {{Joshikousei}}: She [[JacobMarleyApparel wears an obsolete uniform]].
* LockedIntoStrangeness: When she was alive, she had black hair. As a ghost, it reversed to white.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Although Sayo was not a loner by choice, she was just tied to her desk for sixty long years before Negi and Class 3-A discovered her.
* MissingMom: In the anime, it's shown that her mom died in war sixty years ago.
* MobileSuitHuman: She gets around in a tiny, vaguely humanoid doll which apparently makes her act energetic and ditzy. Haruna creates a robot body for her with her artifact. Her doll body drives it from inside.
* MysteriousPast: Her life is never touched upon in the manga, though the first anime does give one version of her death.
* MysticalWhiteHair: It indicates that she's not human.
* NiceGirl: She only wants to be friends with the other girls and starts to freak out when she actually starts scaring them.
* NotEvilJustMisunderstood: She just wants to make friends, but all her attempts to communicate with people are interpreted all wrong.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: She has been tied to her seat for more than sixty years due to reasons still undisclosed, can't leave the school grounds until Asakura got a special doll for her to possess and is absolutely terrible at being a ghost.
* {{Poltergeist}}: One of her ghost powers is making desks float in the air.
* ReluctantMonster: She occasionally makes halfhearted attempts to scare people, but it's obvious she'd much rather be making friends. Reminders that she's a ghost tend to be depressing.
* ReusedCharacterDesign: Akamatsu expressed regret that he essentially made her a ghost version of Konoka.
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: She is mistaken for one after Asakura takes a [[SpookyPhotographs Scary Photograph]] of her. It gets to the point that they even call in two professional exorcists to take care of the problem before they finally figure out that she doesn't want to hurt anyone.
* SuperDeformed: She spends some time with Chachamaru and Negi in a chibi doll of herself.
* VerbalTic: Says ''desuuu'' in a spooky ghost voice. [[DontExplainTheJoke Because she's a spooky ghost]].
* VisibleInvisibility: For 19 episodes of ''Negima! Magister Negi Magi'', she's invisible to everyone but the audience.

Chamo is a crafty, lecherous, [[TalkingAnimal talking ermine]] and something between a familiar and a mentor to Negi. He provides comic relief, devises battle plans, forms the pactio circles and enjoys teasing the girls about their feelings for Negi, which he is apparently able to uncover via some form of weird magic.\
\
Despite mages being turned into ermines for breaking the masquerade, there is no indication that Chamo is such a case. Rather, he appears to be some sort of fairy.
----
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: He is [[UndyingLoyalty unfailingly loyal]] to Negi, after Negi saved and healed him from an animal trap. While he has his [[{{Greed}} profit]] in mind when he urges Negi to make pactios, he does it also to give Negi partners he can rely on and equip them with powerful artifacts.
* ButtMonkey: Whenever he says something perverse, he gets beaten up. In the first anime series, he also gets smacked in the face with a flashlight that was still on, leaving a red mark over his face for the rest of the episode.
* DatePeepers: He has great interest in following everyone around on their possible dates and making lewd comments on them.
* DirtyOldMan: Being a short-lived ermine, Chamo is an old man despite being ''younger'' than Negi. Both he and author's notes refer to him as a dirty old man several times.
* {{Familiar}}: He moves into the story attempting to get Negi to accept him as an official familiar in order to evade responsibility for some crimes he committed involving underwear theft. Negi, being quite gullible, swallows his sob story whole.
* FlippingTheBird: He can be spotted doing this infamous gesture on occasion and he probably gets away with it because he's not human.
* FunnyAnimal: An ermine who talks, smokes and is perverted.
* HeadPet: He often hangs out on people's shoulders and even sits on Sayo's head once, who acts like a HeadPet herself.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Sure, he's a DirtyOldMan in ermine form, and constantly tries to manipulate people for his own gain... but he never puts his own goals above the safety of the rest of group, tries to make sure everybody else benefits along with him, and generally tries to make himself as useful as possible, even when an ermine generally wouldn't be able to do anything.
* LovableSexManiac: He sneaks into a swimming pool with the 3-A girls and pulling their bathing suits off and steals underwear. The former is actually his debut.
* TheMatchmaker: ''Loves'' to tell Negi to make more and more Pactios with the girls because he scores a bunch of money every time he does.
* MeaningfulName: かもがねぎをしょってくる (''kamo'' ga ''negi'' o shotte kuru), which literally translates into "a duck comes bearing green onions", an idiom referring to something being too good to be true.
* MentorMascot: While he's usually just Negi's perverted {{familiar}}, he does a bit of mentoring about a particular aspect of the local magic system, but mostly so he can collect a hefty paycheck from somewhere or other every time Negi gets a partner.
* TheNicknamer: Chamo has a nickname for ''everyone''. It's rare for him to call people by their actual names. It's much more common for him to give them names like Yuecchi or use terms like aniki, anego and nee san.
* NonHumanSidekick: Small, white ermine that looks to Negi as his big brother and helps him form pactios.
* PantyThief: He steals underwear from the girls of the dorm so he can sleep on them.
* PrehensileTail: He's able to grab and even trip other people with his tail.
* PunnyName: Chamo's name combined with Negi's refers to a Japanese legend about a duck carrying a leek that offers itself as a meal to lost and starving travelers, which has come to mean something too good to be true (you've got dinner with its own seasoning), or to con-men, a sucker.
* ShipperWithAnAgenda: He ships every couple he comes across since he gets lots of money every time a Pactio is formed.
* SnarkyNonHumanSidekick: He's quite eager to get Negi as much tail as possible. He also likes to comment on all the {{fetish}} appeal and {{Fanservice}} that tends to go on around them.
* TeamPet: His only role in Ala Alba is being the TalkingAnimal who is around for comic relief and to make the Pactio magic circle when someone is making a contract.
* WeaselMascot: He's a talking ermine who acts as the NonHumanSidekick to TheHero.

Anya is Negi's childhood friend and a fellow graduate from [[WizardingSchool Merdiana Magic Academy]]. Since she's known Negi longer than any of his students, he is more casual than usual when speaking to her. She's [[FieryRedhead extremely emotional]], [[{{Tsundere}} especially when it comes to Negi]] and is convinced that he is being led astray by all the pretty girls and their boobs. Though she shows up after Mahorafest intending to show him how much she has improved, she's stunned to see that he's way, way out of her league at this point. Further annoying her is the number of pactios he has at this point, which pisses her off until he manages to calm her down and invite her to the group officially.\
\
She specializes in fire magic, of course, though her performance is less than stellar considering that the first time she tries to attack Negi she also sets her own clothing and hair on fire.
----
* ACupAngst: Seems particularly obsessed with her breast size relative to the older girls of the Ala Alba. At one point she states outright "those with big breasts are my enemies, those with small breasts are my allies". No wonder she made quick friends with Yue and Nodoka.
* AgeAppropriateAngst: Unlike the rest of the cast, she just has some body image issues that she'll grow out of and worries that the boy she totally doesn't like or anything doesn't pay enough attention to her.
* AscendedExtra: She becomes part of the main cast at the start of the Magical World arc.
* BrattyHalfPint: She comes across as violent, bossy and very bratty.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She really hates to see Negi with other cute, more well-endowed girls.
* ElementalHairColors: She uses fire magic and her hair is red.
* ElementalPersonalities: She's hotheaded and what little offensive magic she does know is all fire based.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When Anya arrives in Japan and finds Negi at the beach with Asuna, she [[ClingyJealousGirl immediately assumes]] Negi is flirting with Asuna and proceeds to greet them with an [[DynamicEntry Anya Flame Buster Kick.]]
* FieryRedhead: She's a redheaded {{Tsundere}} with a violent and abrasive attitude.
* FortuneTeller: Her assignment in London as a final mage test, akin to Negi's assignment as a teacher in Japan.
* GirlishPigtails: Her pigtails are part of her stereotypical {{Tsundere}} appearance.
* TheGlomp: Surprisingly, yes. Granted she only does it once but when Kotarō's group rescues her she's very happy to see Yue. [[LesYay Almost too happy]].
* HopelessSuitor: While most of Negi's suitors have at least some chance, poor Anya has no chance due to her status as a minor character and her fiery attitude.
* {{Meido}}: She dresses in a maid outfit during her time being held captive by Cosmo Entelecheia.
* NoListeningSkills: She almost never listens attentively to what Negi has to say for himself. Whenever she thinks the worst of Negi, she hits first and doesn't ask questions unless she has to.
* PlayingWithFire: She specializes in fire magic.
* PutOnABus: She joins Negi and the rest of Ala Alba in their journey to the Magic World, but after the group is separated upon their arrival, Anya remains missing for almost the entire arc. It's later revealed she was held prisoner by Cosmo Entelecheia along with Asuna. She's rescued towards the end of the arc and from there, she never appears or is mentioned in the manga again.
* RobeAndWizardHat: Her standard attire before the Magical World trip.
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: She's tiny, bossy and prone to comedic violence.
* {{Tsundere}}: She's a definite aggressive Tsun type. It's obvious she has a crush on Negi, but she's too embarrassed to admit it. Whenever someone tells her she likes Negi, she resorts to punching him and yelling "I DO NOT" before running away.
* WipeThatSmileOffYourFace: Homura closes her lips like a zipper in chapter 234.
