* GenderEqualEnsemble: Defied when Eliza joins.
* GleefulAndGrumpyPairing: Evelyn, Mike, Asher and Eliza vs Matt, Jordan and Mara.

[[caption-width-right:350: ''"[[GreenEyedMonster We both know it should've been me who she chose]]."'']]

Asher is the confident one. [[BigEgoHiddenDepths He likes to act like he's above his friends but deep down]], he's [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex very insecure and troubled]]. He still manages to make up for it with [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold being kinder than he appears to be]] and being [[TheBigGuy the powerhouse in the group]].
-----
* AffectionateNickname: Ash. As for Ashie that his dad uses...[[EmbarrassingNickname not so much]].
* AloneAmongTheCouples: [[spoiler: Apart from the [[DrivenToSuicide dead]] [[AlasPoorVillain Jordan]]]], he's this in the group by the end of the first book. It's not the case anymore after Eliza joined.
* AmbiguouslyBi: The hints become increasingly more apparent around Matt as Asher often blushes around him whenever a relationship between them is teasingly alluded to.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: [[spoiler: He does this in the sequel to [[TalkingToTheDead a dead Rose]]]].
* BareFistedMonk: He is a good fighter indeed and his first scene in the sequel implies that he took on martial arts at some point.
* BeneathTheMask: This seemingly preppy kid is more broken inside than he seems. Just take a look at what possible emotional turmoil he's hiding in his ButtMonkey and BreakTheHaughty entries.
* BerserkButton: Don't threaten his friends and don't push him too far. Matt learned that last one [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown the hard way]].
** Calling him [[EmbarrassingNickname Ashie]] is a minor one.
** As of late, the DumbMuscle jokes are starting to get irritating for him. This is his reaction after Evelyn makes one after he took the job of being the voice of reason during a disconcerting moment in which the group is trying to [[spoiler: figure out why Mike walked home before them after finding out that Mara has been seen with Mason]]:
-->'''[[TookALevelInJerkass Evelyn]]:''' [[DeadpanSnarker Since when's the dunce the voice of reason?]]
-->'''Asher:''' ''(rolling his eyes then shooting a DeathGlare towards Evelyn)'' [[SarcasmMode Thanks, Eve. Someone give a round of applause to Eve for the creative nicknames]].
* BigDamnHeroes: His decision to isolate himself from the group after beating up Matt leaves him as the only one able to rush to school after it's closed to save his friends.
* BigEgoHiddenDepths: Downplayed on the big ego part. He can still be considered the most boastful of the boys, though he's very insecure deep down.
* TheBigGuy: Although not large in size, he is probably the strongest one out of the group besides Jordan.
* BoisterousBruiser: TheBigGuy in the gang and he's pretty lively and cheery.
* BreakTheHaughty: He's had a crush on Evelyn for a long time, only to get rejected in favor of the one guy she ever had feelings for. When it looks like he found someone else to love, [[spoiler: she gets taken away from him forever]], thus making him the only one single in the group. Needless to say, he's the one most likely to just shed tears at the mention of the the book's events as seen in the sequel.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: TheBigGuy of the group and he has moments where he acts in a mean way, but has a good heart deep down.
* TheBusCameBack: Returns and joins the other five after his absence from the first few chapter.
* ButtMonkey: Everyone gets pulled through crap in the story, but Asher has it bad and continuous. It starts by him getting [[JustFriends friendzoned]] by [[SingleTargetSexuality Evelyn in favor of Matt]], leaving him to [[WhatDoesSheSeeInHim wonder why was it Matt and not him]]. When he's finally able to get some ShipTease with Evelyn, it looks like they might get together. Nope. The potential date gets thrown out the window when Asher tells Matt some harsh words, causing Evelyn to reject him and give him a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech for his trouble. He tries to move on with Rose and it seems to be going well. He still gets a WhatTheHellHero moment when he beats up Matt but Rose is still there for him. [[spoiler: That doesn't last. Rose loses her life and it leaves Asher very broken inside as we see in the sequel]]. He just can't catch a break.
* CannotSpitItOut: He never directly admitted his feelings for Evelyn. [[SingleTargetSexuality Not that he really had a chance with her]]. He also had this with Rose and Eliza.
* CharacterTic: His tendency to give [[HandshakeSubstitute fist bumps]] is stated to be this by Matt.
-->'''Asher:''' I've just been using it my whole life.
* ChickMagnet: Besides his relationship with Rose that gets more focus, he's had ShipTease with Evelyn, and she seemed like she might be able to move on from Matt if it weren't for Asher messing it up later.
** While his relationship with [[ChasteHeroine Eliza]] in the sequel is [[JustFriends strictly platonic]], she does seem to have a soft spot for him, and she does admit that she thinks he's wonderful, causing him to [[CrushBlush blush]].
* CrazyJealousGuy: Over both Evelyn and Rose, and poor Matt has to be the one on the receiving end of it. He starts showing shades of this around Eliza as well.
* DeadpanSnarker: Occasionally. His first interaction with Jordan is essentially SnarkToSnarkCombat. His snarky side tends to come to the surface when [[VitriolicBestBuds Matt]] is involved.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Two girls, in fact. Evelyn and Rose.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: When he called Matt a nerd in the sequel as a joke and [[DudeNotFunny Eliza told him not to because it's not nice]].
-->'''Asher:''' I didn't say nerd. I said..uh...turd! ...[[LampshadeHanging That's not much better, is it?]]
-->'''Mike:''' [[DeadpanSnarker No no, you totally saved it, Ashie. Well done]].
* DoggedNiceGuy: Evelyn seems to think this when she [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech calls him out]] on being mean to Matt, only to try and backpedal on his words when she rejects him.
* DontYouDarePityMe: A more lowkey version where Asher is actually dismissive and reassuring. When the group is [[spoiler: about to visit Jordan's grave accompanied by her parents]], the couples start relying on each other for comfort. Matt suddenly pipes up and tells them not to do that a lot since it'll make Asher feel left out. While Asher is moved by Matt somehow reading his thought process and correctly telling the others to do something that might help him cope a bit easier [[spoiler: with Rose's death]], he ultimately tells them that he's fine and that him being there shouldn't stop them from being affectionate.
* DrivenByEnvy: The reason behind his initial hatred for Matt is his desire to be together with Evelyn.
* DumbassHasAPoint: While he's not actually a dumbass, he's often joked to be the least intelligent member of the gang which is why Evelyn is quick to comment on his insightful remark as detailed above.
* DumbJock: He's been referred to as a DumbMuscle. However, Asher is actually a downplayed example. He doesn't employ overly scientific and rational solutions nor [[BookDumb does he get high grade in school]], but he is definitely more sensible and aware than your typical dumb muscle.
* EmbarrassingNickname: His father Hunter calls him "Ashie". Apparently, it's a childhood nickname.
-->'''Matt:''' [[{{Troll}} Mike]] is never gonna let you live that one down.
* EmotionalBruiser: He's not afraid to show his true emotions when needed.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Like his friends, he's horrified to learn that [[spoiler: Nate and Dexter were killed]].
* FireForgedFriends: He and Matt stand out from the rest. They initially didn't like each other very much, but they start to warm up first after standing up to the bullies, then their friendship is cemented after [[spoiler: working together to stop Jordi from committing anymore murders]].
* FirstLove: He's this to Rose, ignoring Nate's ImpliedLoveInterest status.
* {{Foil}}: To Jordan. While [[MirrorCharacter they do share a few things in common]], there's also some differences:
** While they both resent Matthew for being Evelyn's LoveInterest because they both have a crush on her, Asher lacks one additional thing: [[spoiler: Jordan's FreudianExcuse which is having had bad relationships with boys before]].
** While they're both a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, Asher is arguably friendlier since he started warming up to Matt sooner in a NotBad way. [[spoiler: It took Jordan being DrivenToSuicide, BarredFromTheAfterlife, having a FaceHeelReturn in the sequel before she TookALevelInKindness]].
** As mentioned in ShadowArchetype in Jordan's folder, the one thing Asher hadn't thought to do that Jordan did: [[spoiler: [[MurderTheHypotenuse kill Matthew]]]].
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: Matt actually forgave him for the beatdown he gave him but he won't hesitate to bring the beatdown he gave him if necessary.
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler: Shares this with Matt. Both their parents have been in a LoveTriangle when they were their ages, and just like Asher lost, his father also lost. It becomes more eerie when you can see similarities in the aftermath too: Asher's father ended up losing his wife because she ran away for unknown reasons, and Asher lost the girl who helped him move on from Evelyn because she was killed]].
* GoodIsNotNice: God help you if you get on Asher's bad side. '''God help you'''.
* HandshakeSubstitute: He's known to use fist bumps as his signatures greeting. Matt lampshades it at one point and Asher replies that he's just been doing it for all his life, leading Matt to deem it [[CharacterTic a tic]].
* HateAtFirstSight: He was the first one to meet Mason (aside from [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter Eliza]]) and instantly got a bad feeling about him, if only because he was jealous [[CasanovaWannabe Mason]] was making moves on Eliza. [[spoiler: He was right]].
* HeartbrokenBadass: With both Evelyn and Rose. He loses Evelyn to Matt and Rose to [[spoiler: death]], and being the one AloneAmongTheCouples doesn't do him any favors either.
* HiddenDepths: In the finale, [[spoiler: He reveals to Matt that he knows how to lockpick, thus he was able to overcome Jordan's CrazyPrepared plan of locking all doors to the school]].
* HopelessSuitor: For Evelyn and later, Eliza.
* HotBlooded: He's quite feisty and boastful.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Implied, since he is just as broken on the inside as everyone else, but he tries not to come off that way.
* IronicName: The name Asher means "happy" or "blessed". Not really fitting for a guy who [[spoiler: got rejected by his best friend, then lost another girl he started to like, leaving him scarred and broken inside]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: Not nearly as bad as [[spoiler: [[EntitledToHaveYou Jordan]]]] when it comes to Evelyn, but he did spend a considerable amount of time bemoaning Evelyn's interest in Matthew because he thinks he's better than him.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Eventually settles on this and becomes supportive of [[spoiler: Matt and Evelyn]].
* JerkassHasAPoint: Although beating Matt up was considered going too far, Asher had a point about Matt not confessing that he didn't like Evelyn from the beginning. He also has all the right to be mad at him for screaming at him in front of the whole class.
* JerkassRealization: He has to go through two of these to realize how bad he's been. One was after [[BewareTheNiceOnes Evelyn]] [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech confronted]] him on his poor choice of words when saying that he wants Matt to be hurt. The second one occurred after he hurt Matt himself and [[WhatTheHellHero all his friends turned on him because of this]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Mean-spirited he might be, but you can depend on him in times of crisis.
* JokeAndReceive: Although both him and Matt were joking, their assertion that life would be better if the bullies were to die comes true. It doesn't make life better.
* JustEatGilligan: Asher actually proposes that Eliza makes something to erase all antagonists, essentially. Matt and Eliza [[ThouShallNotKill argue]] that it's [[IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim immoral]] and that Eliza's capabilities shouldn't [[FalseFriend be used by her friends for their own benefit]] [[GoodPowersBadPeople in that way]].
* JustFriends: He's friendzoned by Evelyn and later, [[ChasteHeroine Eliza]].
* LikeFatherLikeSon: He's a lot like his father Hunter.
* LovableJock: Is stated to be the strongest of the boys, and is definitely fun to have around.
* LoveHurts: He's very unlucky when it comes to love. [[spoiler: First, his friend that he crushed on rejects him because she has feelings for only one other boy, then he starts to like another girl only for her to get killed off]]. It hurt him deeply and the sequel shows it.
* TheMcCoy: Pretty emotional, brash and somewhat arrogant.
* MirrorCharacter: To Matt. Both of them have a HiddenHeartOfGold reserved for their loved ones, both of them have a BerserkButton involving said loved one and they both seem to have interest in the same type of girls.
** He also shares quite a few things with Jordan: Both are the powerhouse of the team, both are Evelyn's best friends, both despised Matt at the beginning due to Evelyn's crush on him and both have a crush on Evelyn. Only difference is that Jordan actually [[spoiler: tried to MurderTheHypotenuse]] while Asher moved on and started crushing on Rose.
* MissingMom: The intro briefly mentions that his mom is nowhere to be seen. Apparently, his dad met her in college then she disappeared for unknown reasons after Asher was born.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: He's very regretful when he beats Matt up, and even admits that he still considers him a friend after everything.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: He hands one to Matt after the latter [[FisticuffProvokingComment pushes him too far]].
* NotBad: When they stand up to the bullies together for the first time, Asher says this to Matt, which leads to the FriendshipMoment described below in SmileOfApproval.
* PutOnABus: Notably the only protagonist who is absent from early consecutive chapters after his introduction (save for a phone call for Evelyn at some point).
* RedIsHeroic: He likes to wear red and has his hair partially dyed red.
* RedIsViolent: Shared with Jordan, who is a FieryRedhead (though admittedly, she's much more violent than Asher).
* RomanticRunnerUp: [[spoiler: To Evelyn]].
* SaveTheJerk: Played with in regards to Rose. She hasn't actually become nicer when Asher decides to protect her from the murderer but it doesn't take long after that for us to see the kinder side of her.
* SecondLove: To Rose, if there was anything between her and [[ImpliedLoveInterest Nate]].
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Manly Man to Mike's Sensitive Guy.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: When he tries to deny Mason's assumption that he and Eliza are an item. Eliza's NoSocialSkills is the only reason she doesn't caught onto Asher's obvious nervousness as he lies about his crush on her.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Mike and Mara. [[spoiler: He also eventually comes around to support Matt and Evelyn]].
* ShippingTorpedo: For Matt and Evelyn [[spoiler: at first]], [[GreenEyedMonster for obvious reasons]].
* ShipTease: With Evelyn and Rose. [[spoiler: Evelyn gets Matt and Rose gets killed by Jordi]].
** In the sequel, it's clear he's starting to fancy Eliza once they meet her.
* SmileOfApproval: Asher's fondness for Matt started when he stood up to the three bullies, and he smiles at him, admires him for it and [[FriendshipMoment even gives him]] [[CharacterTic his first signature]] [[HandshakeSubstitute fist bump]].
* SourOutsideSadInside: He's not as bad as [[StepfordSnarker Matthew]] with the sour part, but he occasionally hides his sadness with an angry front.
* TookALevelInBadass: He was probably already badass and just didn't get to show off his fighting abilities, but his BigDamnHeroes moment certainly attributed to this.
* TookALevelInKindness: He was already a decent guy to begin with, but his interactions, especially with Matt, improved a lot by the end.
* {{Tsundere}}: More often than not, he's actually friendly to most, but his angry side is not a sight to behold.
* VerbalTic: Asher usually uses the word "man" a lot.

Evelyn is [[NiceGirl the nicest of the bunch]]. She acts as [[TheHeart the heart]], she is [[DudeMagnet well-liked and popular]], as well as being a social butterfly....though she loses a bit of her confidence around people she likes...
----
* AffectionateNickname: Eve. Her dad also calls her princess and Matt referred to her as bub.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: At first, Matt was not into her.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She seems to have taken a liking to teasing Mara in the sequel.
* AntiHero: Grows into this more and more in the sequel with the increase in her cynicism and apathy.
* ArentYouGoingToRavishMe: A PG version occurs in the sequel when [[CasanovaWannabe Mason hits on both Eliza and Mara]], and Evelyn, apparently feeling offended, asks why he's not hitting on her too. Mason shuts her down with YoureNotMyType.
* AttentionWhore: She has shades of this in the sequel, demanding attention whenever ignored, particularly from her boyfriend Matt.
* BadassAdorable: Very very cute and damn pretty girl who's also not afraid to do whatever it takes to help out her friends, [[spoiler: even breaking down her former best friend with words]].
* BadassPacifist: She never fights in the entire book, but she is the only one able to [[spoiler: break down Jordi and make her realize her actions, through words only]].
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: She's considered very attractive in-universe and she's on the good side of things. However, [[BeautyIsBad once she becomes more unpleasant...]]
* BeneathTheMask: Subjecting her to horrific events revealed her jealousy, possessiveness and mean-spirited side, something that shocks all her friends.
* BerserkButton: Talking bad about [[LoveInterest Matt]] surely gets out a side of her not seen often...
** [[GreenEyedMonster Also the notion that Matt might be interested in another girl]].
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Make no mistake, Evelyn is a sweet girl who always looks on the positive side of things. But she does have her limits...
* BreakTheCutie: The events of the first book chipped away at her niceness and made her possessive.
* BrokenPedestal: Evelyn absolutely adores her BestFriend Jordan so it's only natural that this trope would follow after [[spoiler: we find out the latter is a murderer]].
* BrutalHonesty: She became pretty much tactless after her negative character development. See the second example for JerkassHasAPoint below.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She has shades of this in the sequel. It affects her kindness noticeably.
* ClosetKey: She was this to [[spoiler: Jordan]].
* CovertPervert: Evelyn shows signs of being TheTease in the sequel and Matt comments on how unexpected that behavior is from her.
* TheCutie: Just look at her.
* CynicismCatalyst: She ends up becoming less idealistic [[spoiler: after Jordan's FaceHeelTurn]].
* DaddysGirl: She's very close to her father Norman, and he's in turn loving and protective of her.
* DrivenByEnvy: ''The whole reason behind all of {{Jerkass}} moments in the sequel!'' Seriously. [[KickTheDog Except when it's not]].
* DudeMagnet: Both Matt and Asher develop crushes on her, and she's shown to be popular in school as a group of boys greet her when she passes them.
* EndearinglyDorky: Outgoing, full of energy and a bit shy. Evelyn is definitely one.
* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler: Being her BestFriend, Evelyn clearly feels betrayed by Jordan when she turns out to be the murderer]].
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: A rather tragic example. [[spoiler: Jordi wanted Evelyn to be with her, but her love being unrequited is what drives the former down a dark path]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: Like her friends, she doesn't think [[spoiler: the bullies deserve to be killed]].
* EveryoneLovesBlondes: Ties in with her DudeMagnet status above.
* FirstLove: To Matthew and Asher.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Very much on her way to becoming this because she TookALevelInJerkass.
* GenkiGirl: She definitely gives [[TheStoic Matt]] trouble keeping up with her.
* GirlyGirl: Compared to Mara and Jordan, Evelyn is more feminine in appearance and personality.
* GoodIsNotNice: She's still on the good side of things, but she's becoming more...unpleasant.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She is a NiceGirl ([[TookALevelInJerkass initially]]) that has her limits after all...
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: Mentions that purple is her favorite color and decides to wear purple for her date with Matt.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Evelyn is a cute blonde girl who's always there for her friends whom she cherishes very much.
* HeadTurningBeauty: In her EstablishingCharacterMoment, she walks by a group of boys who immediately turn to her once they see her approaching and three of them greet her flirtatiously.
* TheHeart: She's the one most likely to step in when an argument happens.
* {{Hypocrite}}: She complains to Matt that she's feeling jealous of him seemingly becoming closer to Eliza, yet she shamelessly tried to urge Mason to hit on her, right in front of Matt.
* HypocriteHasAPoint: It's also quite rich of her [[spoiler: to get [[GreenEyedMonster jealous]] of Eliza when she senses Matt's starting to like her and [[ShipperWithAnAgenda even indirectly tell the latter to consider getting closer to Asher]] after she professed how crucial it is to be able to [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy let go of someone who doesn't like you back]] in the first book to BOTH Asher and Jordan. Though in all fairness to her, she and Matt are an OfficialCouple now so she does have a point]].
* InnocentlyInsensitive: [[spoiler: She doesn't realize that Jordan has feelings for her. She blames Jordan's FaceHeelTurn completely on herself, but her dad Norman points out that she had no way of knowing]].
* InsecureLoveInterest: She eventually revealed to Matt that she had doubts he liked her but chose to ignore them because she really wanted him.
* JerkassHasAPoint: She gets quite a few of these to go with her character shift from nice to mean. A few examples include:
** She's right to call out Matt for DroppingTheBombshell at a bad time and giving Eliza the impression that she did something wrong on her first day.
** [[spoiler: She doesn't let up on Jordan easily in the sequel, but to be fair, she has every right to call her out. Interestingly enough, [[{{Hypocrite}} she was the first one to tell Jordan's parents and Jordan herself that they forgave her]]]].
** She makes yet another good point despite her [[BrutalHonesty tactless delivery]] when she calls out Mike, Asher and Matt for squabbling among themselves [[spoiler: about their suspicions that Mara is with Mason]]. The three are silenced after her words.
-->'''Evelyn:''' Ugh, would you three cut it out already? You're not solving anything by arguing among yourselves like this. We're on our way to her house and we'll find out the truth, so just shut up already.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Originally a NiceGirl played straight, Evelyn starts showing signs of being mean in the second book but she still has moments with her kindness and clarity, making her this trope.
* TheKirk: She's not as stoic and unemotional as Mara and not as brash and expressive as Jordan.
* LongingLook: She does this with Matt in class, which goes unnoticed by him.
* LoveConfessor: The first time she admitted her crush on Matt was when she confided in Jordan about it.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Nice like both her parents and has her mother's cooking skills.
* MissingMom: Revealed to have lost her mother because she died of reasons not mentioned.
* MoralityPet: To Jordan.
* NeverMyFault: In the sequel, she refuses to acknowledge that her newfound toxic behavior is gradually killing her friendships and relationship.
* NiceGirl: Besides Mara, she is among the most pleasant people here.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Her argument as to why bullies [[spoiler: do not deserve to die]].
-->'''Evelyn:''' [[ArcWords They're kids just like us]].
* ObliviousToLove: [[spoiler: In the infirmary scene, she confirmed to Matt that she is not a CluelessDudeMagnet but she understandably never figured out Jordan's feelings for her]].
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: With Matthew]].
* SelectiveObliviousness: In the infirmary scene, she admits to Matt that [[InsecureLoveInterest she always felt like he didn't like her]] but she chose to ignore it and push it away.
* SelfProclaimedLoveInterest: During the short time Matt was not actually interested in her, she was this.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Mike and Mara.
* ShipperWithAnAgenda: She tried encouraging Eliza to talk more often with Asher, clearly intending to get her away from Matt.
* ShipTease: With Matt and Asher. [[spoiler: She chooses the former]].
* SilkHidingSteel: Evelyn is well-mannered and friendly while also not being a pushover. Underneath her kindness are sharp words and a strong will to stand up for what's right.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Towards Matt. It becomes a DeconstructedTrope in the sequel, as her fixation on Matt amplifies her jealousy and she TookALevelInJerkass.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Aside from his looks, Evelyn fell for Matt for his good heart and desire to do the right thing. She points this out to Asher during her TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to him.
-->'''Evelyn:''' Matt came and warned us, despite knowing that we were upset with him. He's honest and caring!
* SpoiledSweet: It's not brought up often but she is stated to be an UptownGirl, and her father dotes on her and yet she's still a NiceGirl.
* SupremeChef: She's said to be this, according to her father. This is a quality she shares with her mother.
* TheTease: She acts this way towards Matt and occasionally [[AmbiguouslyBi towards Mara]] in the sequel.
* TenderTomboyishnessFoulFemininity: Slowly becoming the case in the sequel, with Jordan [[TookALevelInKindness Taking A Level In Kindness]] while Evelyn is [[TookALevelInJerkass Taking A Level In Jerkass]].
* TookALevelInCynic: Along with the major change from NiceGirl to {{Jerkass}} listed below, she becomes more apathetic in the sequel.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the sequel. It comes with her jealousy involving Matt and bitterness over the first book's events. [[BecameTheirOwnAntithesis She's almost unrecognizable to her former self]].
* TookALevelInSmartass: [[NiceGirl She was originally the only one out of the six who never exhibited snarkiness]]. By the time she TookALevelInJerkass in the sequel, it became apparently that mean-spirited comments are one of her specialties now.
* TrueLoveIsBoring: Her relationship with Matt starts going down this route in the sequel. [[TookALevelInJerkass And it's mostly her fault]].
* UptownGirl: The Millers are said to be wealthy, making Evelyn this for Matt.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: [[spoiler: She seems to feel this way about Jordan when she finds out she's the murderer]].
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: Her attraction to Matt is a mystery to both Asher and Jordan.
* WideEyedIdealist: She sincerely has high hopes for people in the world and likes to look on the positive side of things. [[spoiler: It gets crushed when she discovers her best friend turned into a murderer and she becomes more of a {{Jerkass}}]].
* YouMonster: [[spoiler: Evelyn delivers this to Jordan in the climax]].

Jordan is a {{tomboy}}. She is the fiercest at best and the meanest at worst. Never afraid to speak her mind or yell and put down anybody, including her own friends. [[BeneathTheMask She could possibly have some insecurities hidden, however]].
----
* AffectionateNickname: Jordi. Asher also referred to her as Jords once.
* AmicableExes: [[spoiler: Averted with Mason, and basically every other guy she's been with]].
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler: Given that she's one of their friends and she still has sympathetic traits, Jordan falls into this category of villains]].
* AlasPoorVillain: [[spoiler: Jordan is revealed to be the BigBad, yet her [[DrivenToSuicide death scene]] makes it hard not to feel sorry for her]].
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler: She starts making up for what she has done when she comes back in the sequel]].
* BarredFromTheAfterlife: [[spoiler: In the sequel, she stated that she could do nothing but watch her friends and family and not be able to reach out to them]].
* BeneathTheMask: [[spoiler: Her tough manner is a cover for a lot of insecurities on her part. She's a bisexual girl vying for her best friend who's only interested in one guy. Said desire is driven by her previous dating experiences with boys that went horrible. She comes around and accepts it in the sequel, but she's still struggling with her feelings]].
* BerserkButton: Hurting her loved ones, ''especially Evelyn''.
* BigBad: [[spoiler: She was never a bad person to begin with, but the pressure of all the drama and events culminated in her becoming the villain]].
* TheBigGirl: The strongest in the team aside from Asher.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler: While she's the one who subjects everyone to emotional breaking, she does go through some of her own. The realization that hits her like a truck leaves her very remorseful of her actions, driving her to end her own life. Not to mention the blasting (though much deserved) TheReasonYouSuckSpeech she receives from her friends]].
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: The soft center part disappears [[spoiler: when she becomes the BigBad, but returns in the sequel after her HeelFaceTurn]].
* BullyHunter: She has zero tolerance for them. [[spoiler: She arguably becomes a literal hunter in the end]].
* ButNotTooBi: [[spoiler: In the climax, she claims that she dated boys before and developed crushes on both Mara and Evelyn, but her attraction to boys is never actually shown]].
* CannotSpitItOut: [[spoiler: The whole thing probably could've been avoided if she tried to be more honest with Evelyn about her feelings for her. She also had this with her crush on Mara, chickening out every time she got a chance to talk to her]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Part of her rough exterior is an unpleasant sense of humor.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: [[spoiler: The reason why she commits suicide is because she believes in this trope]].
* DepravedBisexual: [[spoiler: In her MotiveRant, she goes on about her past experiences with dating boys, and how she opted to vie for Evelyn's attention]].
* DoesNotLikeMen: [[spoiler: Part of the reason why she opted to vie for Evelyn's attention was her previous experiences with dating boys, as she says in her MotiveRant]].
* DrivenByEnvy: [[spoiler: To the point of murder]].
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler: She ultimately ends her life by her own hands, jumping off the school's building after being cornerned]].
* EmbarrassingFirstName: Judging from her correcting Asher that he should call her Jordi. She doesn't mind it when Evelyn uses it and eventually accepts it from everyone.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: [[spoiler: She gains some supernatural powers after becoming a ghost]].
* EntitledToHaveYou: Feels this way about [[spoiler: Evelyn, which is why she ends up committing murder]].
* EvenEvilCanBeLoved: [[spoiler: For all she's done, her friends forgive her. Not to mention her parents who miss her very much after she dies]].
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: For what it's worth, [[spoiler: she really did love and care about Mara and Evelyn. She just doesn't know how to handle rejection]].
* EvilCounterpart: To Asher. She acts as a {{Foil}} and a MirrorCharacter to him simultaneously:
** They're both close friends of Evelyn's, both have a crush on her and both are jealous of Matt because Evelyn only likes him. However, there is one more reason Jordan has it out for him: [[spoiler: She has a general hatred of boys due to her former toxic relationships]].
** While both of them are rough-mannered but good deep down, Asher is actually more laidback than Jordan and starts warming up to Matt a lot sooner.
** Both of them are the powerhouse of the team and both got the chance to display it against Matt for hurting Evelyn. Asher got to deliver a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown that he regretted later, Jordan [[spoiler: planned to outright kill Matthew and didn't fully regret until her HeelFaceReturn in the sequel]].
* EvilRedhead: [[spoiler: She pulls a FaceHeelTurn and she has orange hair]].
* ExBigBad: [[spoiler: She does die for real but then she's BarredFromTheAfterlife and comes back to her family and friends]].
* FallenHeroine: [[spoiler: She used to be one of the good ones, until she snapped and became the BigBad murderer...]]
* FeminineMotherTomboyishDaughter: Jordan is fierce, confrontational and rough. The polar opposite of Lizzie.
* FieryRedhead: Very much so, yes.
* ForgivenButNotForgotten: In the sequel, her friends don't hesitate to bring up her [[spoiler: murder spree. Jordan understands that nothing will ever justifies what she does]].
* FreudianExcuseIsNoExcuse: It's no surprise that no one even agrees with her [[spoiler: that her past relationships with terrible boys are a good reason to turn into a murderer]].
* GoodIsNotNice: She's definitely the jerkiest of the six but her heart is in the right place.
* GreenEyedMonster: Over Mara [[spoiler: and Evelyn]].
* HairTriggerTemper: Out of the six, Jordan is the one that gets angry easily.
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: She has this after murdering Rose]].
* HeelFaceReturn: [[spoiler: When she comes back in the sequel]].
* HopelessSuitor: For Mara [[spoiler: and Evelyn]].
* IJustWantToBeLoved: [[spoiler: Deep down, Jordan is emotionally scarred from her previous relationship with boys and her thinking that she will be happy with a girl like Mara or Evelyn is what ends up triggering her murderous intent]].
* IncompatibleOrientation: [[spoiler: The main reason why Evelyn would never ever date her is because of SingleTargetSexuality but this is also another reason why. She's only into boys]].
* ItsAllAboutMe: Oh boy howdy. Just take a look at any trope referencing her [[spoiler: crush on Evelyn]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: [[spoiler: She ultimately accepts that she can't have neither girls she crushed on]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Without a doubt, Jordan is the meanest of the group, but she still has her kind moments. [[spoiler: Although she starts to leans towards being a full-on {{jerkass}}, this is balanced out by her having a [[HeelRealization realization]] and [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone becoming regretful]] of her actions]].
* JustFriends: [[spoiler: Her crush on Evelyn remains unrequited]].
* KickTheMoralityPet: [[spoiler: While she did all what she did for Evelyn's sake (In Jordan's own eyes, at least), it only ended up hurting the former and subsequently turning into a {{Jerkass}} in the sequel]].
* KnightTemplar: [[spoiler: The way she describes killing Matt as getting rid of the source of the problem and desire to protect others from her makes her seem like this trope]].
* LikeParentUnlikeChild: Both her parents are easygoing while she's...not.
* LovableJock: She's TheBigGirl and the strong one in the team alongside Asher. The lovable part isn't apparent [[spoiler: after her crimes, but it comes back in the sequel]].
* ManipulativeBitch: [[spoiler: She uses two [[UnwittingPawn unwitting pawns]] and toys with her friends just to get to Matt]].
* TheMcCoy: The most emotional and action-driven out of the girls.
* NotGoodWithRejection: [[spoiler: Snapping and going around murdering people is not how a sane person would react when their crush likes someone else]].
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler: It's a little hard to agree with her methods of protecting Evelyn. Those methods are murder and deception, by the way]].
* ReallyGetsAround: A non-sexual example. [[spoiler: She mentions dating boys in the past, [[LookingForLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces which left her very bitter]]. It's cemented in the sequel when Mason shows up and is revealed to be one of her ex-boyfriends. She even specifically says that he's ''one of them'']].
* RedIsHeroic: Played straight [[spoiler: then averted by her [[BigBadSlippage becoming]] an EvilRedhead. Played straight again in the sequel]].
* RedIsViolent: Even more so than Asher.
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler: Her BigBadSlippage ends up causing this slippage as well]].
* ShadowArchetype: Had Asher taken his jealousy of Matt and possessiveness to the extreme, he would've ended up like Jordan: [[spoiler: an AxCrazy SerialKiller]].
* SheWhoFightsMonsters: At first, she acted (justifiably) antagonistic towards the bullies in the school. Then [[spoiler: she reached [[DisproportionateRetribution a whole new level of retribution]] when she murders them, [[EveryoneHasStandards horrifying her friends]]]].
* ShipperOnDeck: She eventually got over her crush on Mara. [[spoiler: Unfortunately for Matt, the same doesn't happen with her crush on Evelyn until the sequel]].
* ShippingTorpedo: As noted above, she was against Matt and Evelyn being together [[spoiler: [[GreenEyedMonster for]] [[DrivenByEnvy obvious]] [[LoveMakesYouCrazy reasons]]. She actually gets better about it in the sequel]].
* SourOutsideSadInside: She's pretty fierce and confrontational, but underneath it all is [[spoiler: a HopelessSuitor with a crush on her best friend. She reveals some of this sadness in the sequel]].
* StrawHypocrite: She looks mad at Asher for beating up Matt, just like everyone else. [[spoiler: When you find out she was planning to kill Matt, it becomes clear that she only did that to avoid suspicions]].
* SympatheticMurderer: [[spoiler: Yes, Jordan killed three bullies who can be seen as {{Asshole Victim}}s. However, she was also ready to kill Matt, who has done nothing wrong to provoke her wrath other than inadvertently draw the romantic attention of Evelyn, Jordan's best friend whom she crushed on. Not to mention that one of the bullies went through CharacterDevelopment and became a better person. Jordan could still get sympathy from her DrivenToSuicide death scene, her regret and EvenEvilHasLovedOnes regarding Evelyn]].
* [[spoiler: TeensAreMonsters: Applies to her more than anyone else, being an AxCrazy SerialKiller]].
* TenderTomboyishnessFoulFemininity: Slowly becoming the case in the sequel, with Jordan [[TookALevelInKindness Taking A Level In Kindness]] while Evelyn is [[TookALevelInJerkass Taking A Level In Jerkass]].
* TomboyishName: Jordan is a unisex name, but it still qualifies.
* TomboyishPonytail: She fills all the requirements to be a tomboy and she wears her hair in a ponytail.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She acts tough and talks rudely but aside from that, she doesn't dress in a masculine way and even prefers to be called Jordi.
* TookALevelInJerkass: She's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at worst. By the end of the first book, she's [[spoiler: an outright JerkAss that murders people out of envy and jealousy]] but thankfully...
* TookALevelInKindness: By the time [[spoiler: she comes back in the sequel]], she's immensely regretful and somewhat nicer than what she used to be.
* {{Tsundere}}: Even more so than Asher. Jordan is a FieryRedhead who's usually aggressive and callous but she's not heartless by any means. Her CharacterArc deals with her learning to show the sweet side to her male friends more, rather than just to [[MoralityPet Mara and Evelyn]].
* VillainHasAPoint: [[spoiler: The same one as Asher's JerkassHasAPoint above, she's not wrong that Matt broke Evelyn's heart [[CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot in a way that could've been avoided]]]]. Doubles as HypocriteHasAPoint [[spoiler: since a bigger tragedy could've been avoided if she herself handled rejection better]].
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Has this momentarily after Evelyn's BreakingSpeech, and it causes her to kill Rose, who she's been holding hostage]].
* VillainousCrush: [[spoiler: What her feelings for Mara and Evelyn turn into after she becomes a murderer]].
* VillainProtagonist: She's one of the six main characters, but [[spoiler: her actions in the end lands her in the BigBad role]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Have you seen how many spoilers she has here?
* {{Yandere}}: Over [[spoiler: Evelyn]].

Mara is by far the [[NiceGirl nicest]] (yes, [[NiceMeanAndInBetween perhaps even more so than Evelyn]]) and [[ExtremeDoormat most tolerant]] in the group. She tries her best to help her friends when they need her, though her fears sometimes get in the way of that. She's more likely to comfort than deal with a problem head-on. [[ShrinkingViolet She's also the least confident and the shyest]].
----
* AbusiveDad: To the point where her father can be entirely blamed for all her internal damage.
* AffectionateNickname: Mar or just M. She doesn't like Baby Mara or Little Mara, though.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Up until she met her current friends, she was hit with this treatment hard.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Her reaction to seeing Eliza for the first time is a JawDrop at how pretty she is.
* AuthorAvatar: More or less. It's less apparent than Houssem's case with Matt, but Watermelon is like Mara in different ways.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: In the chapter where the group tell each other their birthdays, she's revealed to be this. Downplayed in that they're all the same age but she's younger by months. Her short status is another factor.
* BaldHeadOfToughness: In contrast to most of the girls who have long hair, Mara has most of her hair shaved off. Deconstructed because this is something she hates about herself since she ''knows'' it makes her appear more tomboyish.
* BeneathTheMask: Arguably the biggest one out of the cast. [[spoiler: She's filled with self-loathing, her troubled home life has taken a toll on her, and she's very prone to cry in private because of it]]. She hides all of that with a smile.
* BerserkButton: Downplayed. She's a very nice girl who gets slightly irritated when called by her EmbarrassingNickname mentioned below. Except when Mike uses it, maybe.
** In the sequel, a genuine one is shown: [[spoiler: trespassing her private life]].
* BetaCouple: Arguably her relationship with Mike, as it is less problematic than any other ones in the story.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: She doesn't hesitate to tell Mason that she'll punch him in the sequel.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: She becomes absolutely livid when [[spoiler: she finds out her friends breached her privacy to uncover that she's likely hiding an eating disorder and definitely into SelfHarm. While their intentions were good, [[JerkassHasAPoint she's not entirely wrong]]]].
* BigSisterWorship: She is very fond of her older sister Kata, in contrast to her relationship with [[ChildishOlderSibling Xavier]].
* BreakTheCutie: She was already very broken as we see in the sequel. Things only get worse for her.
* BrokenBird: Even before the events of the first book took place, due to her horrible home life.
* BungledSuicide: [[spoiler: Due to a branch unexpectedly breaking as she prepared to jump from the tree, Mara ended up with a fractured arm and a bleeding head instead]].
* ButtMonkey: Oh, so much so. She's probably the biggest candidate for this trope '''''in the entire series'''''.
* ByronicHeroine: Aside from her niceness, Mara fits this trope to a T. Brooding, has a DarkAndTroubledPast and quite the tragic character.
* CainAndAbel: Mara and Kata are the Abel to Xavier's Cain.
* CannotSpitItOut: One thing she struggles with as the shyest.
* CatapultNightmare: She does this after [[spoiler: a AllJustADream where her father killed her for getting him kicked out of the house. This NightmareSequence would become [[BetterToDieThanBeKilled the driving factor]] of her being DrivenToSuicide]].
* ClingyJealousGirl: Not as bad as Evelyn and Jordan but it's still there.
* ClothingConcealedInjury: [[spoiler: Revealed in the sequel to have SelfHarm tendencies, and she hides them using her gloves that extends over her arms]].
* CynicismCatalyst: Her DarkAndTroubledPast with the family.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: While Asher and Evelyn [[MissingMom lost their moms]] and [[spoiler: Jordan has a history of toxic relationships with boys]], Mara notably sticks out as the only protagonist with a [[SelfHarm seriously]] [[TheDiseaseThatShallNotBeNamed messed up]] [[DysfunctionalFamily background]].
* DarkSecret: [[spoiler: Her SelfHarm tendencies and possible eating disorder]].
* DeadpanSnarker: Mostly towards her friends and especially her boyfriend Mike.
* TheDiseaseThatShallNotBeNamed: [[spoiler: Eliza concludes that Mara has an eating disorder based on her listing what to eat for a day on a notebook and purging her stomach by forcing herself to vomit, but it's never actually specified]].
* DudeMagnet: Aside from Mike, Mason seems to be into her, although he is an AbhorrentAdmirer for her.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Although intended to be affectionate by her friends, Mara gets slightly aggravated when she's called by something that refers to her short status or young age.
* EmotionlessGirl: Not entirely, but she is this compared to Evelyn and Jordan.
* EndearinglyDorky: Despite the sad air around her, Mara partakes in this trope, especially when around her crush.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: The moment Jordan's eyes lay on Mara, her crush on her is revealed.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Like her friends, she doesn't think [[spoiler: bullies deserve to be killed]].
* ExtremeDoormat: The quietest and less confrontational of the six, she's prone to being pushed around without being able to stand up for herself.
* FeminineMotherTomboyishDaughter: While they are both nice, Mara definitely strays away from being feminine like Dianna.
* FirstLove: To Mike.
* {{Foil}}: To her boyfriend Mike. Mike is chipper and outgoing while Mara is quiet and submissive. It can be even observed in their family life. Mike is the oldest child while Mara is the youngest. Mike has a good, if vitriolic relationship with his siblings and gets along with his parents. Mara only gets along with her mother and sister, while she has an outright abusive relationship with her brother and father.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: She and Kata are responsible to their foolish brother Xavier.
* FriendlessBackground: While Matt and Mike had each other and Evelyn had Jordan and Asher, Mara was the loner before meeting them.
* HatesBeingTouched: Mike jokes at one point that Mara is this. She actually tells Evelyn that she's just not used to physical affection when [[TheTease the latter]] [[AmbiguouslyBi hugs her]]. Considering her abusive household, this makes sense.
* HatesTheirParent: Her father Jack, and for [[AbusiveParents very]], [[ArchnemesisDad very]] [[HateSink good]] [[{{Jerkass}} reason]].
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: She carries her headphones even in school, oftentimes putting in to tune out the rest of the world.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: Mike is really not...Until he was.
* IcyBlueEyes: They compliment her EmotionlessGirl nature very well.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Her first lines of thought suggest this heavily. She manages to achieve this when she meets Mike.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Coming from a FriendlessBackground, this only makes sense. She finds what she's looking for when she meets the other five and later, Eliza.
* InsecureLoveInterest: The sequel sheds more light on it. At one point, Mike tells his friends that he's going over to Eliza's for homework ([[spoiler:In reality, he's going over there to spy on Mara and discover the reason behind her weird behavior]]) and then Asher starts joking that he scored a date night with Eliza. Although Mike does clarify to Mara that they are just messing around, she gives us the line that puts her under this trope.
-->'''Mara (thinking):''' It's fine. I wouldn't be surprised if you replaced me eventually anyways.
* JerkassHasAPoint: An interesting case because she's not normally a {{Jerkass}} but her [[BewareTheNiceOnes niceness]] and [[BewareTheQuietOnes shyness]] completely vanish when she [[spoiler: calls out her friends for breaching her privacy to uncover her dark secrets. While they did it with good intentions and Mara completely snapped uncharacteristically, she still makes a good point]].
* KarmicNod: Mara feels this way about [[spoiler: getting exposed for agreeing to a deal to date a CasanovaWannabe blackmailing her using her friends' secrets after she yelled at her friends for intruding on her life to uncover her DarkSecret]], though her friends obviously think otherwise because [[JerkassHasAPoint Mara had every right to be mad]].
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: Takes after her mother ''entirely''.
* LonersAreFreaks: The stares she gets from her classmates suggest that they think this way of her. Rose, Nate and Dexter even pointedly refer to her as a freak.
* LonerTurnedFriend: At the very least, she was able to find a group she fits in.
* MatureYoungerSibling: Compared to her brother Xavier, as we see in the sequel.
* MeaningfulName: Her name could mean "bitter", which fitting for her abusive household and all her negative feelings.
* MirrorCharacter: To Eliza. Both are brunettes, both were lonely and never had friends and both are very nice despite that fact.
* MoralityPet: She's this to Matt, of all people. Although he is far from a villain or a jerk, she is perhaps the least likely to be a victim of his sour sense of humor or smart remarks.
** Less so with Jordan, whose true MoralityPet is Evelyn.
* NervousWreck: The jumpiest of the main characters.
* NiceGirl: To a fault.
* NightmareFetishist: [[spoiler: Just before Jordan becomes visible as a ghost in the sequel, she has to signal Eliza where she is so she can use the ray gun on her. Jordan hides under a blanket and starts floating]]. Mike wonders why Mara isn't freaked out by this. Her response?
-->'''Mara:''' I like creepy stuff.
* NoSocialSkills: The reason why she was always alone before meeting her current friends.
* OfficialCouple: With Mike.
* OnlySaneByComparison: Of the girls. She hasn't been driven to do irrational things due to jealousy like Evelyn and Jordan, but she's still not free of issues. The actual OnlySaneWoman would become Eliza later.
* TheQuietOne: She even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it in a conversation with Matt.
* SiblingYinYang: With Xavier.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Despite the AmbiguouslyBi entry above, Mara doesn't display attraction towards anyone but Mike.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Mike is a an all-around {{nice guy}}, and it's not hard to see why Mara fell for him.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Matt and Evelyn.
* ShipTease: With Mike. They end up together, of course.
* ShrinkingViolet: So damn much. She's often seen hiding behind her friends who happen to be taller than her, or using her [[InTheHood hoodie]].
* TheSpock: Stoic and emotionless, and while she lacks intellect, she's the most down to earth of the girls.
* StepfordSmiler: Heavily implied throughout the series.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Best put by Evelyn:
-->'''Evelyn:''' ''(Introducing Mara to Eliza)'' She might be nervous at first but she's a really nice girl once you get to know her.
* TomboyAngst: She hates the tomboyish traits she has.
* TomboyishVoice: One thing she hates about herself.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: In a way that's kinda inverted compared to Jordan. While the latter is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who dresses femininely and has a normal feminine voice, Mara is a NiceGirl who dresses more like a tomboy and has a TomboyishVoice.
* TwiceShy: She had this with Mike for a while.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Well, she doesn't exhibit any violent tendencies but she doesn't let anyone near Mike, even wrapping her arms around him and hissing when Mike says there's enough space in his life for Mara and his friends. Her smirk afterwards could indicate it was a joke, however.

[[caption-width-right:350: ''"I only say you're kids cause I know I'm [[OnlySaneMan the closest to earth]]. Now that we proved that, can we go back to class?"'' [[note]] [[BrickJoke Told you he wasn't wearing gloves]]. [[/note]]]]

Matt is the thoughtful one. He's constantly exasperated with what his peers do, usually groaning and [[FacePalm facepalming]] and [[DeadpanSnarker making snarky comments]], but only because he wants no one to get hurt, and [[OnlySaneMan he feels like he's the closest one to earth]].
----
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: He allows himself to chuckle and even agree when Mara says that boys are stinky.
* AffectionateNickname: Matt or Matty.
* AmbiguouslyBi: It's mostly his relationship with Mike, and later Asher, that has this subtext.
* AntiHero: [[TokenEvilTeammate Stands out]] from the rest of the protagonists as this, lacking Mike's and Mara's kindness, Asher's [[HotBlooded passion]] and Evelyn's [[ActualPacifist pacifism]]. [[spoiler: He's still more of a hero than [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist Jordan]] is, though. [[HeelFaceTurn At least until the sequel]]]].
* AuthorAvatar: While he, Mike and Evelyn represent different parts of Houssem, Matt is the one whose more comparable to him.
* BecomingTheMask: At first, he only pretends to be Evelyn's boyfriend under pressure. Then he develops feelings for her...
* BeneathTheMask: Matt is evidently not the careless smart mouth he comes across as. He's actually revealed to loathe himself and has very low self-esteem.
* BerserkButton: Do not hurt Mike or anyone else who's close to him.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: The tallest of the boys and the group as a whole, while Mike is the shortest, though he insists he's not.
* BlueIsHeroic: The sequel mentions his favorite color is blue and he is one of the good guys.
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: Apparently wanted to save Evelyn from himself, because he considers himself unworthy of her.
* BreakTheHaughty: His well-hidden negative opinion of himself starts coming to the surface thanks to all the trauma he endured.
* BrutalHonesty: Clearly, this is a requirement to go up in front of the whole class and ridicule your friend of sorts. He slips into this while snarking as well.
* CannotSpitItOut: When he realizes he actually likes Evelyn, he finds it hard to admit and instead lies to her.
* CassandraTruth: He really wasn't into Evelyn at first. Keyword is "at first".
* CelibateHero: Hinted at when he turns down Mike's suggestion to talk to Evelyn more often. Although he was ObliviousToLove, Matt is probably more aware of romance and thus, he's not a ChasteHero.
* ChickMagnet: Aside from Evelyn, he has subtle moments with Rose. In the sequel, even though she considers him a friend, Eliza seems to be fond of him as suggested [[spoiler: when she runs to him for comfort after a scary encounter with some entity and literally doesn't let go of him until they get her home]].
* ChildhoodFriends: With Mike.
* TheComicallySerious: He is generally played as the OnlySaneMan and his stone-faced snarking make for a lot of funny moments in the series.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: Matt invoking BreakHerHeartToSaveHer with Evelyn [[spoiler: pressed on Jordan's BerserkButton and drove her over the edge to the point of becoming the BigBad and deciding to kill him]].
* CreepyBlueEyes: Evan seems to think this is the case when Matt makes a blank face at him.
* TheCynic: Comes with being sardonic. He's growing of it gradually.
* DeadpanSnarker: BOY DOES HE. And it's lampshaded by him.
-->'''Matt:''' ''(After he hears that Mike and Mara are an OfficialCouple now)'' Wow, you actually took the initiative and did that. I'm actually not sarcastically impressed for once.
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler: In the end when Jordi was about to kill him. Luckily, Asher arrived and slammed the door open at the right time]].
* DefrostingIceKing: Evelyn manages to do this for him, though his new friends contributed to it as well.
* DidYouThinkICantFeel: His [[TheStoic cold demeanor]] is the reason behind this. He finally [[NotSoStoic snaps]] near the end.
* DistressedDude: When he [[spoiler: gets into the fight with Jordan and almost gets killed. He's rescued by Asher's arrival]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: Like his friends, he doesn't think that [[spoiler: bullies deserve to be killed]].
* FireForgedFriends: Him and Asher are this, compared to everyone else. They weren't on the best of terms when they first met, but after they stand up to the bullies, Asher warms up to him. They're actual friends by the end of the story.
* FirstFriend: To Mike.
* FirstLove: To Evelyn.
* FisticuffProvokingComment: After ridiculing him in front of the class, Matt runs into Asher who's very mad at him. Matt maintains the smart aleck attitude and keeps insulting him, triggering physical retaliation from Asher.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Downplayed. One of the way he jokes at the expense of himself is saying that he's everyone's least favorite friend, and while he does appear to be this trope given his role and traits in the group, all his friends ultimately care about him as much as everyone else (Initially, Jordan and Asher were the only ones who truly didn't like him, but they do come around).
* TheGadfly: The cheekiest of the six, and he loves to tease anyone around him.
* GenerationXerox: [[spoiler: Shares this with Asher. It turns out their parents had been in a LoveTriangle just like they had been with Evelyn. And just like how Matt emerged as victor, his father also emerged victor]].
* GoodIsNotNice: He's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at worst but he's one of the good guys.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's actually this over Mike, if his words to Asher in the climax is anything to go by.
* IcyBlueEyes: They reflect his stoicism, calm demeanor and levelheadedness.
* InsecureLoveInterest: He tells Evelyn that he doesn't think he's good enough for her with his [[BroodingBoyGentleGirl gloomy self that sharply contrasts with her]].
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: He felt this way about Evelyn for a while.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Unless he's joking or is simply annoyed with whoever he directs rudeness towards, there's usually a valid reason behind his brutal comments.
* JerkassRealization: Although he starts become nicer long before, [[spoiler: he does admit in the end that he wasn't the best person to be around]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Matt in a nutshell. He can come off as standoffish and such, but as Mike puts it, he's dependable and willing to help out when he can.
* JokeAndReceive: Although both him and Asher were joking, their assertion that life would be better if the bullies were to die comes true. It doesn't make life better.
* JustFriends: He's just a good friend to Eliza.
* TheLeader: Somewhat. Near the climax of the first book, he takes the job of directing where everyone goes and what everyone does. It becomes more apparent in the sequel.
* LiarRevealed: During his disastrous date with Evelyn, he finally works up the nerve to tell her the truth about the note he wrote.
* LikeParentLikeChild: He takes more after his mother.
* MirrorCharacter: To Asher. Both of them have a HiddenHeartOfGold reserved for their loved ones, both of them have a BerserkButton involving said loved one and they both seem to have interest in the same type of girls.
* NervesOfSteel: [[spoiler: After the TheReveal of Jordan as the BigBad, she first aims her gun at Matt, who remains calm, then he questions and chews her out with ease]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: Matthew comes off as the OnlySaneMan most of the time, but he's still prone to acting silly or erratic like his friends.
* NotSoStoic: [[OhCrap The moment the word "murder" was first said]], Matt's mask started to crack.
* ObliviousToLove: Not that Evelyn was obvious about it, but Matt was really surprised to find out she had a crush on him.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: With Evelyn]].
* OneHeadTaller: Not just with Evelyn, but possibly everyone else his age.
* OnlyFriend: Used to be this to Mike.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Almost everyone calls him Matt. Only exceptions are his mother and Eliza.
* OnlySaneMan: Not that anybody around him is particularly idiotic, but he often plays this role in the sense that he's the most levelheaded.
* SaveTheVillain: [[spoiler: Tries to do with Jordan on the rooftop when she jumps off. Unfortunately, he failed to reach her in time]].
* ShipperOnDeck: For Mike and Mara, of course. As noted below, he wasn't fond of the idea of Asher and Rose together but he eventually changed his mind.
* ShipTease: With Evelyn and a bit with Rose. [[spoiler: He ends up with Evelyn while Rose dies with Asher pining after her]].
** It seems he might be starting to like Eliza once she shows up too.
* ShippingTorpedo: He tries to discourage Rose from getting together with Asher for two reasons, the first being so that [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy Evelyn can get with Asher]] and the second is his concern that Rose would be hurt if she was with Asher. He actually seems to change his mind in the epilogue, stating that Asher and Rose would've made a good couple if not for [[spoiler: her death]].
* TheSmartGuy: Compared to everyone else, Matt likes to think things through and work through them in a clever way.
* TheSnarkKnight: He is the biggest DeadpanSnarker in the series, and doesn't refrain from taking potshots at himself either.
* SoProudOfYou: He says this to Asher [[spoiler: as they're standing over Rose's grave. He's proud of him for unearthing Rose's kind side]].
* TheSpock: He always keeps his emotions in check and is the brains out of the boys.
* StepfordSnarker: When he finally reaches his breaking point, [[HeroicSelfDeprecation he lets loose a series of hurtful words with the purpose of diminishing his value as a person]], hinting that his normal persona is a front.
* TheStoic: Perhaps the one who keeps his emotions in check the most.
* StraightMan: To practically every other character he interacts with regularly.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Matthew is definitely the coolest of the main cast and he also has a warm side underneath it.
* SurvivorGuilt: [[spoiler: In the sequel, he and Asher are at Rose's grave. Matt nonchalantly mentions that he should've died instead of Rose. He's trying to hide it, but it's clear he's haunted by this]].
* TallDarkAndSnarky: He's stated to be the tallest in the group, has dark hair and a darker shade of blue eyes and the snarking part goes without saying.
* TookALevelInBadass: In the beginning, he was an ordinary snarky teen with little to no care in the world. By the end, [[spoiler: he's facing a mass murderer with courage and determination despite being weaker]].
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: He's more upbeat in the sequel.
* TookALevelInIdealism: Compared to his portrayal in the first book, Matthew is less inclined to act or think pessimistically in the sequel.
* TookALevelInKindness: Although he maintains his snark, he's more involved and open with his friends.
* TrueLoveIsBoring: Seems to be headed down this route with Evelyn in the sequel as he's getting exasperated with her AttentionWhore and ClingyJealousGirl tendencies.
* VerbalTic: His is the word "dude".
* WackyParentSeriousChild: With his father Samuel.
* WouldHitAGirl: In self-defense, anyways. [[spoiler: He's the one to hold off Jordi in the end till the authorities arrive]].

Mike is the bubbly one. He's [[GenkiGuy energetic]] and [[ThePollyanna optimistic]], though not necessarily well-liked or a social expert. [[DetermiNator He never gives up]] and sometimes even acts as {{the conscience}}.
----
* AcquiredSituationalNarcissism: It can be argued that this is what Mike goes through in the beginning after befriending Rose, Nate and Dexter.
* AffectionateNickname: Mike or Mikey.
* AmbiguouslyBi: More so than Asher or Matt, being a fan of hugs and physical contact. He also tells Mara outright that he loves Matt and is possessive of him, not to mention his constant jokey flirting.
* BadassAdorable: ''Very adorable'' and a NiceGuy ''not to be messed with''.
* BearerOfBadNews: He was the first one to know and inform the gang [[spoiler: about Dexter's death]].
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He ends up the receiving end of this, courtesy of [[FalseFriend Rose, Nate and Dexter]].
* BeneathTheMask: More evident in the sequel where he revealed his more cynical and quiet side, most likely hidden under his smiles before.
* BerserkButton: Bully his loved ones and you'll see the less likable side of him.
** Also, saying that he's short. [[SuddenlyShouting HE'S NOT SHORT, HE'S AVERAGE HEIGHT!]].
* BetaCouple: Mike's relationship takes a backseat to the complicated relationships of the other characters. However, they start having drama in the sequel...
* BewareTheNiceOnes: ''Don't'' you dare push his buttons.
* BigBrotherBully: Heavily downplayed. Mike is notably ruder to his brothers Austin and Zach, viewing them as AnnoyingYoungerSibling but it's a lot, lot better than anything Mara's older brother [[{{Jerkass}} Xavier]] might say or do.
* BigBrotherInstinct: His protectiveness of his friends may stem from having younger siblings, although he is not the oldest in the friend group.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: The shortest of the boys (despite his insistence otherwise) while Matt is the tallest.
* BreakTheCutie: Originally, Mike's spirit was unbreakable as ThePollyanna of the team. The sequel comes around, and he TookALevelInCynic and became quieter and moodier.
* CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest: Inverted. As seen below, he's not exactly the type of guy to hit on many girls, he only flirts with Mara, and some of his comments are definitely...interesting.
* {{Catchphrase}}: He adopts "I'M NOT SHORT, I'M AVERAGE HEIGHT!" as this in the second book.
* ChildhoodFriends: According to Matt, Mike has been his OnlyFriend for a long time.
* CompressedVice: Mike's desire to be InWithTheInCrowd is never mentioned again. Lampshaded by Matt's shock at his friend's sudden change in behavior.
* TheConscience: He's mostly this to Matt, and it extends to the rest of his friends too.
* CoolBigBro: To his three younger brothers.
* CovertPervert: You can't find a sweeter soul than his...but you'd be surprised at some of his more risque flirts. He doesn't actually ogle other girls, only his girlfriend Mara.
* CrazyJealousGuy: You don't even think of looking at Mara funny.
* CuddleBug: He's very fond of giving hugs. Maybe a little too much...
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Both his eyes and hair are brown. He has the distinction of being the only protagonist to have this.
* CynicismCatalyst: He TookALevelInCynic starting with [[spoiler: the revelation that Mara has SelfHarm tendencies and hid an eating disorder from everyone]].
* DeadpanSnarker: You'd have to be one to be Matt's best friend, apparently.
* EndearinglyDorky: He's definitely the dorkiest of the male cast and is a cutie.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Like his friends, he doesn't think that [[spoiler: bullies deserve to be killed]].
* FirstFriend: To Matt.
* FirstLove: He's this to Mara.
* {{Foil}}: To his girlfriend Mara.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The responsible to his foolish brothers Austin and Zach.
* TheGadfly: He's pretty cheeky and loves to tease people around him, especially Matt and Mara.
* GenkiGuy: [[TheStoic Matt]] wonders how he's been able to handle Mike for extended periods of time.
* GoodIsNotSoft: He doesn't have the BewareTheNiceOnes listed for nothing...If you are doing something heinous, he will call you out on it.
* GreenEyedMonster: He's this over both Mara and Matt.
* HeightAngst: "[[InsistentTerminology I'M NOT SHORT, I'M AVERAGE HEIGHT!]]"
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: He lives, but as Mara points out, it was pretty idiotic to just jump at Jordi with no plan]].
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: In contrast to [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone Eliza]], Mike adopts this attitude after [[spoiler: he and Eliza spy on Mara to find out why she's acting so strange]], even name dropping the trope to reassure the former that they did the right thing.
* InsecureLoveInterest: He ends up indulging in this himself in the sequel after [[spoiler: spying on Mara cause her to avoid him, even telling Jordan that he wouldn't be surprised if she wanted to break up]].
* InsistentTerminology: He's not short, okay? He's average height.
* InWithTheInCrowd: He gets offered to be friends by Rose, Nate and Dexter, and unexpectedly change character because of it. He snaps out when he realizes they were only using him to hurt Mara.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He's a NiceGuy, but whenever he calls someone out in an unflattering manner, he's mostly spot on with the criticism, which is usually seen in the sequel.
* TheKirk: Matt even mentions how Mike balances out the boys in the group.
* KnightInSourArmor: Mike TookALevelInCynic in the sequel following [[spoiler: the revelation that Mara has been hiding a SelfHarm habit]] but he by no means gave up on doing the right thing.
* TheLancer: To Matt.
* LeeroyJenkins: [[spoiler: His HeroicSacrifice can be seen as this, especially since it was rather impulsive and honestly idiotic to charge a strong girl with a gun, as Mara tells him afterwards]].
* LikeParentLikeChild: Takes after both his parents.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Like Mara's mother Dianna, Mike is a NiceGuy.
* TheNapoleon: He's actually much nicer than most examples but still, mentioning his [[HeightAngst height]] is [[BerserkButton bound to elicit]] [[SuddenlyShouting an explosive reaction]] [[InsistentTerminology out of him]].
* NiceGuy: More apparent with him than it is with [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Matt and Asher]].
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Shared with Eliza. [[spoiler: The ShootTheDog act described below ended up backfiring really badly on Mara]].
* OfficialCouple: With Mara.
* OnlyFriend: He was this to Matt ever since they met.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: He rarely gets called Michael. Only Eliza refers to him as such on a regular basis.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: The normally playful and flirty Mike takes on a serious character, much to the surprise of Matt and Mara. [[spoiler: He was gonna tell them that Dexter was killed]].
-->'''Matt to Mara:''' [[LampshadeHanging Only something serious would turn him into that]].
* PluckyComicRelief: Mike occasionally slips into this role, intentionally acting buffoonish to alleviate tension. This is even lampshaded by Matt twice. When Mike is around, your day lightens up.
* ThePollyanna: He's never seen brought down by events around him, [[spoiler: even when ''getting shot himself'', all he does is reassure Mara it'll all be okay]].
* RefuseToRescueTheDisliked: Mike rudely objects to Asher's SaveTheJerk mentality with Rose on accounts of her attempts to hurt Mara before and honestly, [[JerkassHasAPoint could you blame him?]]
* RelationshipUpgrade: After his LoveConfession, he and Mara are officially an item.
* SarcasticDevotee: He never fails to criticize Matt when needed. He also sticks with him no matter what and refuses to leave him.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Mike is the Sensitive Guy to Asher's Manly Man.
* SiblingYinYang: With Austin and Zach.
* SingleTargetSexuality: Unlike Matt and Asher, Mike only has eyes for Mara. He can only tease her, and he's never seen doing anything remotely suggestive with any other girl ever.
-->'''Mike:''' I wouldn't trade Mara for anything in the world.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Before becoming an OfficialCouple, he would deny that there's anything between him and Mara.
* ShipperOnDeck: A HUGE one for Matt and Evelyn. He's also mentioned to be this for Rose and Asher. In the sequel, he constantly teases Asher about Eliza.
* ShipTease: With Mara, and they successfully get together.
* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler: Mike only wanted to find out what Mara was hiding so they could help her, and knowing she wouldn't say with ease, he enlisted the help of Eliza to essentially spy on her. He seems to feel bad about it though, and so does Eliza]].
* SiblingRivalry: More so with Austin and Zach, as Mike's more fond of Henry.
* StepfordSmiler: When he's troubled by their problems in the first book, he'll keep a smile on until he's alone.
* TheTease: Acts this way towards Mara, naturally.
* TinySchoolboy: Compared to Matt and Asher.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: He undergoes this when facing Jordan without fear, and even performing a HeroicSacrifice that he lives through]].
* TookALevelInCynic: Seems to be going down this route in the sequel. He's by no means less kind than he was before, but he is less cheerful and outgoing than before.
* TroubledButCute: Grows more into this in the sequel.
* TwiceShy: He had this with Mara for a while.
* VerbalTic: Likely stemming from having siblings, Mike uses the word "bro" quite often.
* WasTooHardOnHim: After he goes RefuseToRescueTheDisliked on Rose and angering Asher, Mike privately tells Mara that he feels this afterwards, prompting her to comfort him.
* WouldHitAGirl: [[spoiler: He charges Jordan when she badmouths Matt in the finale, leading to him getting shot]]. It can be assumed that he would only do this when absolutely necessary, given [[NiceGuy his usual nature]].

Aside from the main six, there are other characters that interact with them throughout the story.

[[folder: General]]
* BigBadWannabe: For a HighSchool SliceOfLife story, these three would be the closest thing to a BigBad. [[spoiler:Except here, you have a hidden SerialKiller VillainProtagonist who's much more dangerous]].
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: Nate, Dexter and Rose respectively.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: They are introduced by picking on an easy target (Evelyn) and backing down when Jordi shows up.
* EvenEvilCanBeLoved: All three. [[spoiler:Their deaths are mourned and]] no mention of family troubles is made about them. Plus Asher starts fancying Rose.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Each other and their families too.
* HarmlessVillain: Needless to say, they're not actually a threat.
* PopularIsEvil: They're all stated to be popular despite the jerkish attitudes.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl
* VillainousFriendship: A genuine one, surprisingly.
* VillainyFreeVillain: They're big jerks but at they remain harmless teens at the end of the day. [[spoiler:This really stands out once you find out Jordan committed murder]].

* ActionSurvivor: Once she actually joins in with the six.
* AlphaBitch: And how. She gets better.
* AnyoneCanDie: Discussed by her in a conversation with Matt, as seen in the image quote. [[spoiler:She becomes a victim of her own words in the finale]].
* TheAtoner: After her JerkassRealization.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Rose manages to change for the better thanks to Asher, and the additional support of the other five helps immensely as well.
* BeneathTheMask: Her bitchy behavior actually hides a sweet side.
* BerserkButton: Don't badmouth [[LoveInterest Asher]] near her.
* BreakTheHaughty: Gets this hard [[spoiler:when Dexter and Nate die]].
* BullyTurnedBuddy: She finally befriends the main six in the final arc of the story.
* CharacterDevelopment: As noted above. She goes from the main six's tormentor to their friend. She even apologizes for her past actions.

* HeelFaceTurn: She wasn't a proper heel to begin with but she does get better as time goes on.
* HostageSituation: [[spoiler:She becomes the victim of one, courtesy of Jordan]].
* ImplausibleHairColor: Hers is pink, fitting with her name.
* JerkassRealization: Rose manages to befriend the protagonists, apologize for her mistakes and become just as protective of them as they are for each other.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: This trait is clearer with Rose compared to her two friends as we get to know more about her and see her softer side.
* KickTheDog: See PoliticallyIncorrectVillain below.
* KidHero: After her HeelFaceTurn.
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler:She becomes this to Asher in the sequel. He's still grieving for her after a whole year, and feels guilty when he starts liking Eliza because he still hasn't gotten over Rose]].
* LovableAlphaBitch: When her kind side becomes more apparent.
* LoveRedeems: The effect her relationship with Asher had on her. [[spoiler:It doesn't last]].
* MeaningfulName: She has rose-colored hair and wears a flower crown.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Poor Rose [[spoiler:pays with her life when she tells Asher to call his friends back the same time they're fighting off Jordi]].
* OneSteveLimit: Averted in the sequel. She shares her name with Evelyn's deceased mother.
* PetTheDog: Along with Nate, she first shows her soft side when she approaches Matt about [[spoiler:the note found near Dexter's body that has his name on it]].
* PinkMeansFeminine: She has pink hair and is a LovableAlphaBitch.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Nate and Dexter.

* ThePowerOfFriendship: She does come around to the main six.
* ThePowerOfLove: Her ShipTease moments with Asher help her better herself.
* ReformedBully: She abandons her old ways after becoming nicer.
* RoseHairedSweetie: After her CharacterDevelopment.
* SecondLove: She's this to Asher, after Evelyn.

* SixthRanger: The combination of her JerkassRealization, CharacterDevelopment and [[LoveRedeems relationship with Asher]] allows her to ascend to this role.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only girl in the bully gang.
* TearsOfFear: [[spoiler:She sheds them when she's taken hostage]].
* TechnicolorEyes: Green ones like Nate.

Nate is a [[SmugSnake cocky]] [[JerkJock jock]]. He is a tall blondie and he is strong. This makes him popular among everyone else, despite being a {{Jerkass}}.
----
* AssholeVictim: Despite being a jerk, [[spoiler:no one in the story thinks he deserved death]].
* BerserkButton: Mocking him and/or Rose.
* BreakTheHaughty: Gets this when [[spoiler:Dexter dies]].
* TheBully
* CaptainObvious: See his image quote for his "insult" towards Evelyn...
* EntitledBastard: Interesting example. The first thing he does when [[spoiler:Dexter's body turns up with a note that has Matt's name on it]], he goes to tell the latter about it, and he seems more concerned about wanting to know why than warn Matt that he's a potential target.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's horrified at the [[spoiler:murders]].
* FalseFriend: To Mike.
* ForgottenFallenFriend: [[spoiler:He and Dexter become this to Rose]].

[[HeterosexualLifePartners Friend of Nate]] who shares a lot with him. Same build and hair color, as well as [[{{Jerkass}} the rotten attitude]], although Dexter [[TheQuietOne speaks less]].
----
* AffectionateNickname: Dex.
* AmbiguousSituation: It's not made clear whether he knew if Evelyn's mom was dead when he made a YourMom joke at Evelyn's expense.
* AssholeVictim: Despite being a jerk, [[spoiler:no one in the story thinks he deserved death]].
* TheBully
* FalseFriend: To Mike.
* ForgottenFallenFriend: [[spoiler:He and Nate become this to Rose]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Nate.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Implied to have this.
* JerkJock: Shared with Nate.
* KickTheDog: In his first scene, he mockingly tells Evelyn "Go cry to [[YourMom your mommy]], ya baby!". A few chapters later, we find out that Evelyn's mother is dead. However, it is left [[AmbiguousSituation ambiguous]] whether Dexter was actually aware of that or not.
* KilledOffscreen: [[spoiler:We don't see him getting shot by Jordan]].
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Rose.
* TheQuietOne: Compared to Rose and Nate.

Matt's [[NervousWreck nervous]] and [[ShrinkingViolet socially awkward]] deskmate. Although he's a victim of the former's sharp tongue as anyone else, [[OddFriendship Evan finds Matt's company to be comforting]].
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: This is fueled by Mike's teasing of Matt's desire to sit with Evan. On top of that, he's never stated to have a crush on any girl.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: He disappears from the narrative in the sequel without a mention.
* EndearinglyDorky: He's pretty shy and reclusive, and also friendly and soft-spoken.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Evan is first seen jumbling his words over being late as he sits with Matt.
* FirstFriend: To Aaron.
* FriendshipMoment: He has his share with Matt.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Unlike Matt's IcyBlueEyes, Evan's reflect his NiceGuy status.

* NiceGuy: He's without a single bad bone in his body.
* OddFriendship: With Matt and later, Aaron.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Matt and Evelyn.
* ShrinkingViolet: He's very shy and introverted.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Evan himself shows up a few times, but the secret admirer note that he urged Matt to write becomes the catalyst for the whole story.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: See above.
* UnwittingPawn: Becomes this to [[spoiler:Jordan]] in the end.

This is a kid who just seems to go unnoticed very easily. He's usually [[TheEeyore down in the dumps]], and talks lazily about [[DarkAndTroubledPast depressing things]].
----
* AmbiguouslyBrown: The only character to have a tan but it's never touched upon.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The reason why he seems to become friends with Evan in the end is because the latter actually bothered to reach out to him and get him to open up.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Implied to be similar to Mara's.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Aaron is shown to be depressed, monotone and generally gloomy.
* TheEeyore: His manner of speech is pretty much depressing.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Befriends Evan in the climax.
* NiceGuy: If you take away his downer side, he's actually pretty approachable.
* NoFullNameGiven: The only character whose last name is unknown.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: He makes this about Mara.
* TheQuietOne: He doesn't seem to talk much.

* TokenMinority: The only person in the cast with a different skin color.
* TookALevelInCheerfulness: Implied by the end.
* UnwittingPawn: Becomes this to [[spoiler:Jordan]] in the end.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: We know he lives, but we don't know what became of him by the time of the sequel.
