SPOILERS AHEAD!

!!Brotherhood of Saint Mark

A guild started by Ilya to serve as a Front Line clearing group; most of the main characters for the story are members.
----
* BadassCrew: Easily has the most powerful characters in the game early on and recognized as such. It's mentioned that they are easily worth eight raid groups during boss fights.
* FantasticRecruitmentDrive: The only qualification that is required to join while Ilya is recruiting is that you have an InfinityPlusOneElement. Skill and character are optional.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Being part of the guild nets you one of these from Shirou.

!![SHIROU] (Shirou Emiya)

A Magus and survivor of the Holy Grail War (Fate Route), Shirou entered the game to play with his sister only to be stuck inside as the Death Game began. Still traversing the path to being a hero, he dedicates himself to saving as many lives as possible early on in the game and has become a somewhat renown and controversial player known as the Sixth Ranger.
----
* OneHundredAndEight: Kirito keeps telling stories about the "hundred and eight skills of [The Sixth Ranger]." Shirou finds it annoying that people seem to be taking it seriously. Kirito finds it hilarious.
* TheAce: From the beginning Shirou has served as an absolute beast of a player due to his combat and magecraft experience.
* AlchemyIsMagic: Ilya has taught him some Alchemy to help with his blacksmithing.
* ArrowCatch: He mentions off-hand that he did this to the Black Cats in 15.3 and followed up with an EyeScream. But they were in a safe-zone, so no harm no foul. Kirito dryly notes that he thinks Shirou traumatized them a bit.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: In addition to Shirou's max leveled Structural Grasp, a single spar with someone is all the information he needs to forge them their perfect weapon.
* BareFistedMonk: Knows unarmed combat to supplement his swordsmanship.
* TheBlacksmith: Once the Rear and Mid Liners are safe enough to no longer need his heroics, Shirou turns to creating swords so that their wielders will be safer.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Yes! There's a reason he's called the SixthRanger. Shirou is given an outlet for his and nearly runs himself ragged trying to save everyone who's in danger in the early days of the game.
* CrutchCharacter: Coming out of the Holy Grail war and being a practitioner of Magecraft from the beginning, Shirou throws himself into this position to minimize the number of deaths.
* HeroesPreferSwords: It's his element and origin.
* HiddenDepths: It's implied that he suspects Ilya is cooperating with Kayaba, but has specifically decided not to ask.
* HumbleHero: Has no need for rewards or praise.
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: When under the effects of the [Trigger] spell, he gains this depending on whose skill he's drawing from.
* ImprobableAimingSkills:
** To help teach Argo how to use her telekinesis, she and Shirou play darts. As Shirou is getting bullseyes, Kirito starts talking to him. Shirou turns to listen to him, as is only polite... and continues getting bullseyes without looking.
--->"Hm." Shirou pursed his lips, before he also guessed. "Was it an NPC that sells really delicious food?" Since it was his turn, he absently gestured, launching his own dart. It would have been rude to look away, so he kept his attention on Kirito. He could see the target with his mind anyway, so he didn't need his eyes.\
Kirito started at him, glancing over his shoulder in a double-take, before sighing in even deeper depression. "No, that's... no."\
Argo raised an eyebrow, glancing from the target back to Shirou with an incredulous look. There was no need to check; Shirou had known it was a hit the instant the pick had fired.
** Later, Kirito mentions that when it was time for Shirou to practice his own telekinesis, he started doing this with swords.
--->It had been one thing to watch him play darts with Argo using TK, but seeing him shoot swords just as easily gave him pause.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: He crafts these.
* InfinityPlusOneElement: His element is [Sword], which means his [Psychogenesis] creates more swords and it plays a part in his Unique Spell [Tracing].
* InstantExpert: If he sees a sword he can draw experience from the previous wielder, regardless of whether or not he's even held that type of weapon before.
* LightningBruiser: As Shirou is obsessed with saving others, his build is entirely specced towards Agility. His magecraft and swordsmanship, however, provide him with what is likely the highest damage output in the game, and his internal projection in the form of scales of steel allow him to tank hits from floor bosses, making him quite possibly the fastest, strongest, and most durable player in the game.
* LossOfIdentity: This happens to Shirou if he's not careful when using [Trigger On] before sympathizing with the experience.
* MadeOfIron: He once stuck his hand inside a furnace just to judge the temperature of coal.
* MageMarksman: Of the Arcane Archer variety once bows and arrows are unlocked. He snipes a flying boss monster down in two hits.
* MagicalIncantation: His Aria is simply "Trace: On!"
* MagicPrerequisite: His Unique [Tracing] spell requires "Imaginary Blueprints".
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Very little phases him in terms of pain. Justified once you remember, not only that the sensation of creating a Magic Circuit has been explicitly compared to having a bar of red-hot iron inserted into your spine, but that Shirou went through this process repeatedly for years in canon, leading up to the Holy Grail War. Add to that his experiences in the War, such as being splattered by Berserker, and very little compares.
* ThePerfectionist:
** Shirou will create swords that make Lisbeth jealous, only to immediately break them down for scrap and start over until he manages to match the sword to the design in his mind.
** As of 15.1, he applies this to his clients as well. Now that the quality of the weapon scales with the effort invested into collecting its raw materials, Shirou does not tolerate people half-assing their fetch quests.
* QuestGiver: Shirou assigns quests to his clients for them to gather the materials needed to forge them their ideal weapon.
* RedBaron: Known as "Sixth Ranger". It becomes official later on.
* RunningGag: Whenever anyone mentions a legendary weapon (typically in the context of games), he will immediately and casually correct them to what the actual weapon is like.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Shirou wears a crimson one with his extra low-weight white jumpsuit. He moves and fights so quickly that its red afterimage is sometimes the only thing most people manage to see.
* SixthRanger: Literally one, in both ability and how he's always appearing and helping struggling groups in the nick of time. He perfectly matches Kirito's description in the aftermath of the first boss battle.
--> Kirito: Despite not fitting in with that main cast, he shows up out of nowhere and abruptly wins the episode's battle because he's unbalanced and OP. You could say he's a reliable trump card, but on the other hand, that's exactly why he doesn't fit in.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: This is Shirou's usual response to those who thank him for saving them.
* TrickArrow: He uses [Alteration] to add [Sword] to his arrows, and can download other qualities from weapons he's recorded in [Tracing] to make a variety.
* UltimateBlacksmith: Despite being limited to swords, he is capable of creating personalized weapons which characters and narration describe as nothing less than perfectly attuned to their intended wielders, though with "names" that are basically just algorithm-generated manufacturer's markings. This, along with his status as TheAce, contributes to other players' theory that he's actually an AI.
* WorldsBestWarrior: He quickly gains a reputation as the strongest fighter in the game. At first people misunderstand him as a kill-stealing jackass, or some strange glory hound, but by the 5th Floor Boss meeting all the other strongest players don't even question him being leagues ahead of all of them.
-->Diabel nodded slowly, eyebrows furrowed as he studied Shirou. "If the strongest player volunteers, we should allow it."\
Shirou felt slightly off-balance, like he had prepared himself and entered a deep stance for a wrestling match, putting strength in his legs and getting ready to push with all his might, only for the opponent to completely collapse at the lightest touch.

!![Von Ilya] (Ilyasviel "Ilya" Von Einzbern)

A former Master of the Holy Grail War, Ilya is a homunculus with a short amount of time left in the world and she wanted to spend it with Shirou until they were trapped inside the game. Could her salvation be found inside the Death Game and how far would she be willing to go to attain it?
----
* TheAce: An Ace in her own right when it comes to magecraft, she can break just about any curse or boundary field or solo a boss on her own. Knows quite a bit more than Shirou does but has less of a reputation simply because she doesn't go out of her way to help others when there's nothing in it for her.
* AlchemyIsMagic: She's inherited her family's understanding of Alchemy and uses it to install [Sorcery Traits].
* BrutalHonesty: She is not one to mince her words. More often than not, she'll say what's on her mind to whomever she is speaking to.
* CoolCrown: Earns one from the [King Slime] Boss on the 4th floor as a LA Bonus.
* CrutchCharacter: While not as outwardly useful as Shirou, she knows more about Magecraft that even he does and assists many players in their [Circuit Activation] quests.
* CuteBruiser: Despite her young looks she's a Strength-specced Front Liner.
* CuttingTheKnot: Ilya has mind-control magic. It's only minimally useful against monsters, but [=NPCs=] almost never have any resistance. So she uses it to skip all NPC dialogue and anything else that might slow her. Especially since, due to the game's attention to detail, the NPC usually has the final quest reward in their inventory. So she'll order them to give it to her, and then end of quest will play out as if she had spent hours doing the quest normally.
-->"That's how you do [Quests], huh." Kirito dryly commented.\
"Oho ho ho!" Ilya did that fake noblewoman laugh she liked to do before responding. "Yes! I'm proud to say that I've never once had to listen all the way to the end of a dialogue!"\
Silica wasn't so sure that Ilya should be proud of that.
* DealWithTheDevil: Made one with Kayaba. If she helps him, he'll fix her body.
* TheDreaded: Diabel points out that she has a reputation for being feared more than anything else.
* EvilIsPetty: While she's more amoral than truly evil, Ilya is very petty when thwarted or annoyed. Case in point, how she treated the kid who initially picked [Berserker] as his [Player Name] -- which was something she wanted to do.
* TheFakeCutie: Asuna notes that sometimes it's very obvious that she's pretending to act like a little kid. Other times it's not as obvious, but she's still (mostly) pretending.
* GenderBender: Ilya used a male Berserker-esque avatar during the beta test. After its form is reset to match her real body, she keeps her [STR]-focused build and now plays like an adorable powerhouse.
* IncestSubtext: She doesn't really hide that she wants Shirou for herself in a lot of ways. And keep in mind that, while they're NotBloodRelated, she is actually his older sister.
* InsufferableGenius: A genius in magecraft and gaming, Ilya wants everyone to know it. Her raid group during Boss fights is the smallest because none of the other guilds want to deal with her.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: She's... basically this to everyone else. In chapter 16.2, she pretty much shot a kid's confidence to pieces after telling him that what he made wasn't exactly what he said and didn't bother to complement him on the fact that he'd made something impressive regardless.
* TheLeader: She is the Guild Leader. As such, she has the final say in things.
* MagicalEye: Still has her [Mystic Eyes of Binding] from Fate Stay Night that lets her control the muscles and joints of whatever living being she looks at.
* MagicPrerequisite: In order to use the [Mystic Eyes] it requires a [Sorcery Trait].
* NoEyeInMagic: She still has to look at someone for her Mystic Eyes to work.
* NoblewomansLaugh: Ilya does this, on occasion.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Carried over from Fate canon. Ilya is older than Shirou yet looks a lot younger than him.
* PetTheDog: She didn't have to defeat Zolgen and probably wouldn't have even bothered if it wasn't for the fact that the people who died were friends of her disciple.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Her original build was based on Berserker. So she hits really, REALLY hard.
* ProjectileSpell: She can fire her energy as [Ether Bolts], artillery shells of pure destruction. She calls it the [Prana Cannon].
* PureEnergy: She's an Ether-type as well and uses it with her combat abilities.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: The leader of the group, she possesses the most prana capacity and experience as a magus. Even though her brother is more famous, everyone recognizes her as the Guild Leader.
* RazorFloss: Develops this as a variation of the [Ether Thread] spell.
* RedBaron: Known as "The White Witch," first informally then officially once the [Titled Players] system is launched.
* SpellBlade: On the 4th Floor she develops a spell that takes Ether and has it outline her sword to make it a Chainsaw Sword.
* UnskilledButStrong: Ilya isn't a better fighter than most other Players, but her lack of hesitation and brute force magecraft give her an edge.
* WorldsBestCharacter: Since she was built to contain an epic-level ritual, her magic circuits and prana capacity are orders of magnitude better than anyone else. It's rather notable that she barely ever uses her magecraft in combat; she sticks with the physical skills granted by the system. When she does decide to use magecraft slightly seriously, she curb-stomps a Floor Boss. Diabel is shocked when he finally sees her with his AuraVision.
-->In every way, her Circuits were better than anyone else. Compared to the rubber hoses that people awkwardly squeezed to slosh prana around inside, hers were more like huge steel pipes that hummed as high-pressure prana was rapidly and smoothly circulated by a powerful pump. Compared to the garden hoses that most people could water plants with like an amateur gardener, she was more like an entire water treatment plant under the direction of a skilled engineer. It was like her charstats were dialed all the way up to the system maximums.\
Ilya wasn't just stronger than other [Players]. She was stronger by a vast gulf, her prana capacity was better in orders of magnitude. That had been unequivocally demonstrated to everyone against the Fifth Floor Boss.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: The fic starts shortly after the Fifth Holy Grail War. Ilya is still alive, but as a homunculus designed solely for the War, she doesn't have much longer. Part of the reason that Shirou lets her drag him into Sword Art Online (and they are subsequently trapped with everyone else) is that he is willing to indulge her whims since she doesn't have much time left. When Ilya discovers a secret she shouldn't, Kayaba himself contacts her and offers to try to extend her lifespan if she works with him. She doesn't really believe he can do it, but she agrees anyway.

!![Kirito] (Kazuto Kirigaya)

A Beta Tester who found himself in the game, the sudden changes in the system has left him involved in the Death Game and walking the path of a Magus. Technically speaking, he's not an official member since he prefers to be a Soloer, but he parties with them the most during the Raids, considers Shirou and Asuna his friends, and is acknowledged by pretty much everyone as being aligned with the guild.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Occasionally he finds himself comparing what he does to what Shirou does as a swordsman, who he acknowledges is leagues ahead of him.
* BareFistedMonk: Knows unarmed combat to supplement his swordsmanship.
* FingerGun: Uses this pose when firing his [Magic Missile] technique.
* GoodWithNumbers: He finds magecraft easier with numbers in contrast to Shirou's fill-in the cracks style and eventually recognizes [Numerology] as his favored craft.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Kirito prefers to use his sword in most situations.
* HomingProjectile: By applying the [Isopsephy] and the [Magic Number] of a target to his spells with [Alteration], Kirito can have them home in on the target as long as he maintains line of sight.
* HumbleHero: Shares this with Shirou.
* InnateNightVision: He knows the [Night Vision] spell.
* KryptoniteFactor: Because of his Numerology Magecraft he can become more effective against certain monsters through killing enough of them in the act of a ritual. Unfortunately, the power-up is temporary so he has to redo the ritual once its effects wear off.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: By 14:1, Kirito feels this way compared to the other Front Line guilds like the DDA, Paladins, and Fuurinkazan as well as the other members of the [Brotherhood of Saint Mark] who all absolutely excel in their various specialties.
--> Compared to all that (read: everyone else in the Brotherhood), Kirito was just... the Ether guy. He didn't have anything special that made him stand out or gave him an edge.
* ProjectileSpell: He learned Ilya's [Prana Cannon] technique, but it was so cost heavy that he rebuilt it into an Ether-based version of Rin's Gandr Shot called [Magic Missile].
* PureEnergy: Kirito's Element is Ether.
* RazorFloss: Knows several variations of the [Ether Thread] spell and makes use of at least one that's like this trope.
* SwordBeam: Has learned how to do so by 15.3 and calls the spell [Linker Beam]. Ilya quips that it's not useful if he can only use it at full HP, but he counters that it's an "improved version" that he can use whenever.
* UtilityMagic: While he doesn't realize it, as an ether specialist this is his advantage over the rest of his guild. Case in point, the 25th floor. Asuna's party gets lost, struggles to find their way, and slowly walks their way back using literal trigonometry. Kirito gets lost, says "that's annoying," and casts a Dowsing spell that instantly points him in the right direction. He doesn't even realize how dangerous the situation is for non-ether users.
* WeaponOfXSlaying: Everyone of his weapons when ritually enchanted to oppose an exact enemy.

!![Asuna] (Asuna Yuuki)

A girl new to video games who decided to try out Sword Art Online as an escape from her real life. She ended up trapped in the Death Game at launch and has been forced to grow into a confident young woman. Due to a chance encounter with Ilya early on the First Floor, she's drawn into Ilya's raid group and eventually becomes one of the founding members of the Brotherhood.
----
* ActionGirl: Give her a rapier and watch her go.
* CantCatchUp: Asuna fears this as she hangs around with Shirou and Ilya, noting that as times goes on that if more Rare Element users join, then she won't be relevant anymore as they're the ones doing the majority of the damage on the Front Line.
* ElementalPowers: She's came out on top in terms of sheer number within the group with Water, Air, Fire, and Earth.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Even by the early floors, she realizes she's in this situation with Kirito. She specifically compares some of their interactions with her parents.
* MagicalIncantation: She's experimenting with Arias, but nothing has clicked for her.
* NumberTwo: As the most sensible of the members, she has become their de facto commander and second in command of the guild.
* OnlySaneWoman: Asuna is this compared to the rest of original group, as she's the only one who has a normal viewpoint of things. The key example early on is witnessing Shirou stitch himself up with swords. Shirou is insane enough to do it, Kirito is interested enough to research it, and Ilya is indifferent because she's a magus, whereas from a normal perspective Asuna is the only one freaked out about it.
--> Asuna sighed like she was surrounded by idiots. Kirito didn't really understand why.
* SuperpowerLottery: Has a good number of circuits and access to four elements total right out of the gate.

!![Silica] (Ayano Keiko)

A young dagger-wielder who befriends Ilya and is a fan of Shirou's activities as the [Sixth Ranger].
----
* AnimalEaredHeadband: A MagicalAccessory to match her Element and serve as an aid to enter [Mindset of the Beast].
* TheBeastmaster: She trains a number of Familiars to help her in battle.
* CharmPerson: Her [Mystic Eyes of Charm] influence the emotions of others to turn hostile opponents into a neutral or even friendly state. She also brainwashes her familiars to love her, ensuring their loyalty.
* FanGirl: Of Shirou as the [SixthRanger].
* IJustWantToBeBadass: Before meeting Ilya she desired this more than anything, wanting to be on the Front Line.
* InfinityPlusOneElement: Her Element is [Beast], giving her affinity with animals and gaining the traits of animals herself.
* MagicalEye: She's given [Mystic Eyes of Charm] by 16.2.
* MagicEnhancement: In addition to her beast-themed familiars, she also gains spells that increase her senses and abilities. By the mid floors, she has reflective eyes like a cat's and can see in almost perfect darkness, her ears swivel and she can hear whispers from a dozen yards away, and she fights with a knife in melee against ten foot-tall monsters.
* PantheraAwesome: One of her familiars is a six-legged Sabertooth-Tiger named Tama-chan.
* SuperSenses: Thanks to her Element, her [Reinforcement] gives her even sharper senses than most others.
* TokenMiniMoe: Of the guild, she's the youngest.
* YaoiFangirl: Ships Shirou/Diabel.

!![Leviathan]

A Player who was recently recruited into the guild because of his element, he doesn't feel like he belongs. WordOfGod is he's the character who would go on to be Behemoth in GGO.
----
* BloodMagic: His element is geared towards using Blood, but he hasn't really experimented with it seeing as blood was only introduced in a later patch.
* CantCatchUp: His element is [Blood], which wasn't unlocked until the 5th floor, and he's only on the Front Line because of Ilya wanting him to join for his element rather than his skill. In his own words, he had a bad start and didn't want to catch up, but he couldn't say no to Ilya. He's a mediocre Rear Liner around people like [The Sixth Ranger].
* DarkIsNotEvil: Leviathan's sword had blood added to the molten metal and was quenched in blood. Ordinarily such a process would create a heavily cursed weapon, but because all of the blood was created and willingly given by Leviathan, it is only dark.
* InfinityPlusOneElement: Has the [Blood] element. At the start of the game, this was completely useless, since the [Anatomy Update] hadn't come into play yet. By the time blood was patched in, he had fallen behind and given up on catching up. Ilya dragged him to the front line and made him a surprisingly effective healer.
* ManaPotion: He can make highly efficient Mana Potions with his element. He made and sold them to Agil to stay afloat when he was a Rear Liner.
* ThePowerOfBlood: Blood is all kinds of useful in magic. The sword Shirou makes for him with the assistance of Leviathan's magecraft is more aligned with blood than any weapon Shirou has ever heard of.
* WhiteMagic: He eventually learns healing magic.

!![Rosalia]

The leader of the [Titan's Hand] guild. She was scouted by Ilya and the members of her guild became subsidiary members of the [Brotherhood of Saint Mark].
----
* ControlFreak: Very much enjoys being in control of her guild members and views all of their actions in terms of how it benefits or undermines her authority.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She doesn't really care about killing other Players or losing one of her own beyond the inconvenience, but [Laughing Coffin] puts her off due to their depravity. [=PoH=] in particular concerns her as he seems like the kind of person who would, or already has, killed people in real life for no reason.
* EvilRedhead: She was the leader of a Guild that robs Mid Liners.
* InfinityPlusOneElement: Has the [Light] element. She initially hid it from everyone, including her own subordinates, because she hated the idea of becoming some holy crusader. Ilya explains that it's more about physical sight. She proves to have a lot of utility for scouting, and the spear Shirou makes for her is basically a laser gun.
* LightEmUp: She might be able to do this with her [Light] Element.
* LightIsNotGood: Rosalia has the [Rare Element] of Light. Since she's a criminal and a pragmatist, she found the idea of becoming some sort of holy crusader absurd at best, and didn't even tell her own allies about it. Ilya explains to her (after forcibly recruiting her) that it's about literal light. The first trick she learns is creating essentially remote cameras that she can link her sight to.
* OhCrap: Briefly when encountering Ilya for the first time and seeing she was a [Titled Player].
* PragmaticVillainy: She doesn't join up with [Laughing Coffin] because she doesn't want to play subordinate to someone else, but also because [=PoH=] is clearly a different brand of evil. She typically works by paralyzing and then robbing Mid Liners without killing them because it attracts Front Liners, and when Ilya does show up she joins up because when the game is cleared they'll get good PR for just being part of a clearing group and because .

!![Kuradeel]

A Mid Liner hoping to break into the Front Line, he was scouted into the guild by Ilya.
----
* TheBeastmaster: Ilya has set him on the path of devil-taming and he now has his own set of disturbing familiars.
* BFS: He prefers to use Greatswords.
* CoolSword: The sword Shirou made for him, forged from [Metal Slime Essence].
* DontYouDarePityMe: He hates being consoled.
* DrawAggro: His element shades his spells so that they do this.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Essentially, he hates being looked down on and wants respect more than anything. Ilya acknowledging his [Rare Element] and Shirou complimenting him and giving him a CoolSword is enough to make him loyal to their guild for life.
* GainingTheWillToKill: In his case, he already has the will to kill. Shirou has to warn him not to be consumed by it.
* GlassCannon: He believes in the best defense being a good offense as a tank.
* GlorySeeker: A bit of one. He'll actually work to get it though.
* HearingVoices: His [Mystic Eyes of Whisper] creates false sensory perceptions in the mind of his enemies, primarily in the form of disconcerting auditory hallucinations.
* HiddenDepths: His first thoughts after initially seeing the legendary [Von Ilya] in person are about her Albino appearance and the challenges she must have faced because of them.
* InfinityPlusOneElement: Has the [Bogeyman] element, which is basically weaponized magic fear.
* MagicalEye: Gains the [Mystic Eyes of Whisper] by 16.2 from Ilya.
* MorphWeapon: His guild sword is actually very plain looking and under-powered in its base state, but it responds dramatically to his [Bogeyman] element and Alteration and Reinforcement spells, becoming a much more powerful CoolSword. Shirou implies that other spells will have equally dramatic effects.
* ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight: His element is [Bogeyman], a variation of the [Sixth Imaginary Element], a type of [hypothetical devil] that materializes from human thoughts. In particular it's constrained to the idea of monsters with an unknown form that lurk in the shadows, unseen, that kind of thing.

!!Paladins

A guild started by Diabel to serve as a Front Line clearing group.
----
* KnightInShiningArmor: Most of the members have this motif.
* RunicMagic: Diabel proves adept at [Rune Magic], something that many of his guild pick up as well.

!![Diabel]

A "Rune Knight" who organized and led the raid against the boss of the first floor. He is another beta tester who was renowned for PlayerKilling but changed to cope with the Death Game.
----
* ActionPolitician: Having worked at the National Diet, Diabel plans to use his accomplishments leading the Players to bolster his career after Game Over.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Unlike canon, while he's somewhat of a GlorySeeker, he really does have everyone's best interest at heart and protects his men.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Over the course of the story Diabel grows from the glory-hoarding Beta-Tester he was in canon, into an inspiring leader who genuinely cares about setting an example for his men, and who's first priority is making sure there are as few casualties as possible. A later chapter from his point of view expands on his cunning, showing that he intends to use his efforts to guide and protect players to bolster his political career.
* GuileHero: He plays politics like Shirou uses swords. He pretty much made himself the boss of [Thinker] by the fifth floor and he did it legally. His only regret so far is that he couldn't get Shirou to work for him since Ilya had gotten him first.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Has a Kite Shield that he uses with a sword.
* MagicKnight: His player build.
* MagneticHero: Acknowledged by many as one of the most charismatic heroes in the game.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Played with, as he acknowledges he's not as strong as Ilya, Shirou or Kirito and is jealous of them at first. But he acknowledges the one thing he is better at than them: leading.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: It's repeatedly made clear that he is single-handedly responsible for solving almost all the problems that existed in canon. He keeps the [Front Line] as a politically united, efficient fighting force. He works to get [Retired Players] and [Rear Liners] involved in the game as safely as possible. He keeps an eye on the kids too young to fight. He averts the Beater crisis entirely, gets every player in the game a personal home, and he releases a news bulletin keeping players updated on what's going on. He even named Thinker, a man from a non-combat guild, as his successor to demonstrate that he considers the political side of his job far more important than being the leader of the biggest guild. In fact, if this was canon, he probably would have cleared the game in half the time. Unfortunately, this is the Fate universe, so he's repeatedly blindsided by magecraft bullshit, patches editing things for "realism," and literal demon summonings.
* RedBaron: The Rune Knight.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: He susses out that Shirou's thought process is unnatural for a human, but mistakes it for evidence that he might be a RidiculouslyHumanRobot based on a real person, rather than a sign of Shirou being a trauma survivor with a Martyr Complex.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Nearly killed by Illfang like canon, but Shirou managed to save him.
* SupportingLeader: Not as strong as the protagonist, he makes it up by being a superior leader. A brief segment told through his point of view while fighting a boss revealed that, despite having powerful equipment, he hadn't actually fought the entire battle as he was focused on directing the battle.
* Troll: To Liz in 10.2 with AccidentalInnuendo between himself and Shirou. And he enjoyed it.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He doesn't like bugs. Then came the 3rd Floor Boss...

!![Kibaou]

A mace-wielding player who follows Diabel, he practices [Runes] as well.
----
* AdaptationalHeroism: He's much more of a team-player than in canon. This is clearly due to Diabel's influence.
* GoodIsNotNice: He's loyal to Diabel, but is also prone to starting arguments and is generally very prickly to others, even when not meaning to.
* HavingABlast: He uses his Rune magecraft to put explosive runes on his swords and explode them into hot shrapnel.
* HiddenDepths: He's a surprisingly good architect in real life and it transfers into the game.
* HomeFieldAdvantage: Because every bit of housing made in Elvengrad has a plaque with his name as the one who designed them, he's the most magically connected person to the town.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rather abrasive most of the time. However, thanks to his AdaptationalHeroism, he is much nicer than in canon and looks out for his allies.
* NamedWeapons: His [Phoenix Sword], because he explodes and then reforges them. [[spoiler:Shirou takes the history and uses [Alteration] to apply it to an arrow, killing the 10th boss.]]
* ReforgedBlade: Every time he uses the [Phoenix Sword] it ends up broken, but he reforges it himself afterwards so that he can continue to use it.
* SpikyHair: So much so that Kirito mentally refers to him as [Cactus] in his thoughts.
* TookALevelInKindness: He becomes much more pleasant to be around later in the story.
* UngratefulBastard: Shirou saved the healer in his party, saved Diabel, and finished Illfang off, and he still has a hate-on for him. Ilya has more than once called him out on this. He lightens up later on by the 4th and 5th floors.

* BagOfHolding: He uses a Bible to store his cursed tools.
* CoolMask: Wears a ninja mask. It's obvious to literally everyone that he's just trying to hide his face. In particular, he complains that the system seems to simulate blushes too well.
* DontYouDarePityMe: He doesn't want people's pity for his , or more specifically, he doesn't want others dictating how he felt about it.
* DualWielding: Uses two weapons at once.
* EyeSpy: Using a glove and emblem, he can see through anything with the same eye emblem.
* MagicalEye: He gained the [Mystic Eyes of Binding] from Ilya as her first student.
* MagicalIncantation: His Arias are "Athame" for regular curses and "Nazar" for eye related ones.
* MagicPrerequisite: In order to use the [Mystic Eyes] it requires a [Sorcery Trait] installed by Ilya.
* MultiMeleeMaster: He uses a ton of weapons, including maces, rapiers, swords, axes, bolas, throwing weapons, etc.
* NoEyeInMagic: Averted. It's mentioned that he's advanced to the point he no longer needs to make eye contact with his opponent for his [Mystic Eye] to take effect.
* PeoplePuppets: His control eventually gets to the point where he can manipulate [=NPCs=] and others.
* PerceptionFilter: He gains a spell that acts, as another character refers to, like a Notice-Me-Not spell from Harry Potter fanon.
* ReligionIsMagic: Thanks to some advice from , Hexadecimal is able to use a prayer from a bible to invoke a Sacrament.
* ShadowPin: The [Lock] spell.
* SpellBlade: His fighting style is to use weapons that inflict some form of curse.
* TakeUpMySword: [[spoiler:He gives up his sword [Tyrfing] to Griselda after chapter 17.2, feeling unworthy of it.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: By chapter 17.2, he's gotten skilled enough that he can .
* UselessUsefulNonCombatAbilities: He has the crafting skill, something normally not useful for a Front Liner but he wanted to make a mask of his own. He uses it to bribe Ilya into taking him as an apprentice, make Silica's headband, and give Shirou a mask fitting the SixthRanger.
* WalkingArmory: Hexadecimal utilizes a large amount of weaponry with different curses so that he can swap to whichever one is appropriate for the enemy he is facing. His arsenal includes, but is not limited to, swords, axes, knives, maces, and bolas.

----
* CowardlyLion: Sacchi is the one who feels the most fear among her friends when fighting. She is also strongest when she is feeling fear, especially if it is the fear of her or her friends being hurt or dying.
* Familiar: Initially, her biggest contribution to the group is to support the [Mules] they use.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: She's an archer, but her DPS actually decreased from when she used a spear or sword and shield because she's a really lousy shot.
* HiddenDepths:
** Sacchi understands the [Sympathy Principle] of [Numerology] right off the bat.
** Shirou suspects Sacchi has the potential to be far more powerful, but that her timid nature is holding her back. In fact, in one of the non-canon chapters, during the battle test Sacchi actually kills Shirou, inside a safe zone. It's unclear if this is the ability that she is holding back in canon, or if it was just a joke.
* ManaDrain: Sacchi learns how to transfer Mana to and from her guildmates. Its effectiveness is raised while they are under the effects of [Key of the Guild].
* ProjectileSpell: Kirito teaches her the [Magic Missile] spell, but her reserves are higher than his so the shots come out the size of basketballs.
* ProtectiveCharm: Kirito teaches her a spell, [Key of the Guild], which allows her to link up her guildmates and provide them spiritual protection by drawing numbers on their faces that corresponded to the number their names add up to using [Numerology] from those who are unaware of the numbers' significance.
* SuperpowerLottery: She has one of the highest mana reserves in the game. In fact, Kirito theorizes that only Ilya is higher, which is a huge deal since Ilya is literally orders of magnitude stronger than the average mage.
* SupportPartyMember: Sacchi's ability to provide the group additional defense through [Key of the Guild], maintain familiars, and use her large mana reserves to bolster everyone else's makes her an excellent supporting caster.
* SwordBeam: Sacchi gets a sword made by Shirou which allows her to use Kirito's [Linker Beam]. It's named Spirit Cutter, which helps with the sympathetic Numerology of the weapon.

The BigBad of the story responsible for trapping 10,000 people inside his game. In addition to being a brilliant game designer and software engineer, he is also a magus. He previously worked under Zouken Matou in an attempt to restore the Matou clan's magus lineage until Shinji's death during the Fifth Grail War.
----
* AffablyEvil: He will be polite and soft-spoken even as he tells players that they will die in the game. He is also polite when speaking with Ilya.
* BrokenMasquerade: He risks this by exposing so many people to the secret of magecraft .
* FairPlayVillain: His game is shockingly fair, with a reasonable attempt made to have something fun for everyone. He also doesn't punish Ilya for contacting the outside, admitting that he hadn't actually made a rule that she wasn't allowed to do that.
* GoodWithNumbers: Aside from being a brilliant programmer, Kayaba's magecraft is [Numerology].
* PetTheDog:
** He earnestly praises .
** He brings .
* PragmaticVillainy: A few over canon.
** First, apparently the outside world doesn't know that he's behind the SAO incident. That gives him far more options for the future. Even though he told the players that he was responsible, it would be trivial to claim someone else hacked the game and pretended to be him.
** Second, Ilya discovers that players who die in the game aren't dying in the real world. This is an important secret, as Kayaba needs players to genuinely believe they could die. He also warns her not to mistake it for mercy. . Rosalia also notes that the outside world is going to be much less desperate to break into the game if, from their perspective, no one else is dying.
** His game really only seems cruel from the perspective of people who have no experience with magecraft. To Shirou, Ilya, and Grimlock, the whole thing is almost a hilariously soft method of teaching magecraft. It's perfectly fair, with all the clues laid out in front of you to solve problems. More realism (and thus difficulty) is added with every patch, but never too much at a time, so players aren't overwhelmed. Really, the only problem the real mages have (besides the lack of consent) is that they don't know what his solution is to deal with the Enforcers trying to kill everyone at the end.
* StealthMentor:
** Kayaba implemented the Death Game and Thaumaturgy Patch so he could forcibly educate the Players in magecraft without them realizing its real world applications.
** In a more direct example, Kayaba has been .
* TheStoic: When talking with him, Ilya notes that he's so stiff and emotionless he doesn't even seem human. It's only rarely that he shows a bit of exasperation or passion towards magic.

* BlingBlingBang: In Chapter 15.4, Shirou crafts Lind a halberd made out of platinum, among other similarly heavy and rare metals. Partially subverted in that the heaviness of the weapon synergizes with Lind's Magecraft, making it functional as well as opulent.
* GenderFlip: The Lind of this story is female, unlike in canon.
* NotQuiteFlight: She and her guildmates can use their gravity manipulating magecraft to levitate.
* RedBaron: Known as the [Lady in Steel].
* SelectiveGravity: Her Magecraft revolves around manipulating Gravity to increase the weight of her blows and more.
* WeaponSpecialization: She wields a halberd in combat. Shirou eventually forges her one entirely composed of noble metals, primarily Iridium, Osmium, and Platinum, that's so heavy that it can only properly function as a weapon through the use of Lind's gravity manipulating magecraft.

A friend and fellow beta tester of Kirito. Within SAO she works as a KnowledgeBroker and Courier.
----
* AlchemyIsMagic: Shirou starts teaching her some Alchemy since it has good synergy with her element.
* TheApprentice: She begins learning magecraft from Shirou, starting with the [Create a Circuit] spell, then [Structural Grasp] and even alchemy. Kirito is amused when he catches her instinctively calling him "sensei."
* ExtraOreDinary: Her element is Metal.
* FacialMarkings: She has whisker markings, which is applied from intentionally not finishing a specific quest.
* GoingForTheBigScoop: She was considering becoming a science reporter before the game; in fact, one of her forum threads about how the [=NerveGear=] would revolutionize computers ended up featured on foreign news networks. This is part of why she becomes an information broker (even if she only gives news out for free after she can't sell it), and she begins coming up with a shared theme to explain magecraft to newbies as part of this.
* KnowledgeBroker: Her bread and butter. There is little she doesn't know and if she doesn't she will find out.
* NonActionGuy: Gender inverted. She focuses more on information gathering than fighting, though that doesn't mean that she doesn't know how to fight.
* UnSorcerer: Argo can use the [Generate Od] spell, but she doesn't have any circuits, meaning she can't gather prana to use as a spell. Fortunately for her, Shirou helps her get around this by teaching her how to [Make One].

!![Lisbeth] (Shinozaki Rika)

A mace-wielding blacksmith that provides service with a smile, she's the main one who keeps up and makes new weapons for most of the main characters.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Her friends call her Liz.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Shirou's better than her when it comes to making swords and it kinda grates on her because he constantly breaks them down to do it over each time.
* TheBlacksmith: One of the best early on and mentored Shirou.
* CarryABigStick: She wields a mace when she fights.
* YoungEntrepreneur: She became a smith to help out other players.

!![Griselda]

A HouseWife trapped in the game with her husband, Grimlock, she wants to participate more and truly live so she sets out to play the game by becoming a Magus.
----
* ActionGirl: She fights up close with a sword.
* CoolSword: She gets one from .
* HappilyMarried: She loves her husband. He never once belittled her for her hobbies or habits like her parents did.
* TheLeader: She's the Guild Leader of the [Sorcery Hunters].
* SeekerArchetype: She and her guild specialize in looking for [Spells] and [Magecraft Instructors] that had been missed by the Front Liners.
* YamatoNadeshiko: She seems like this before she started actively playing the Death Game.

!![Grimlock]

A blacksmith who's married to Griselda and hesitates to play the Death Game at first because he is an actual Magus.
----
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: The Grimlock from canon was a coward at heart and was too afraid of death to play the game. Here, he is an active and useful member of the Mid Line guild. This is due to being a Magus in real life, meaning he is used to facing death in the face as it is a normal thing to do as a Magus.
* AwesomeByAnalysis: Managed to figure out a bounded field before crossing it and its weaknesses to ensure his party's survival. He didn't even break a sweat.
* TheBlacksmith: Stated to be one early on, he was the only one capable of making [Steel] from ingots until Shirou learned how to. After that undercut his business, he went to making Mystic Codes instead. They're BoringButPractical and never backfire, working exactly how they are supposed to.
* BoringButPractical: He gets a reputation for making Mystic Codes that are simple and straightforward, but always do what they're designed for without any mistakes. Before that, he was one of the richest smiths in the game simply because he knew how to make steel from outside the game (until Shirou undercut him by basically giving away steel for free).
* BrutalHonesty: While he doesn't give his opinion without prompting, if pushed he will bluntly explain to people exactly how their ideas are stupid and will never work.
* DeathGlare: He has one that can stun people, especially as they wouldn't expect it coming from him.
* HappilyMarried: He honestly loves Griselda.
* InsistentTerminology: When it comes to Magecraft, he uses the proper terminology, such as referring to the [Zombies] as [The Dead].
* StepfordSmiler: He wants to support his wife despite his reluctance in delving into Magecraft or playing along with Kayaba's scenario. The reason is that he's actually a Magus and is worried the Association will eliminate everyone involved. However, he may not actually apply for this trope, because he seems to genuinely love his wife and co. So while the smile may not be a lie, it IS hiding something.
* TheStoic: He usually has good control over his emotions.

!![Hanzou]

The Guild Leader of the [Fuumanin], a guild that helps scouts floors and is subordinate to Diabel.
----
* BeneathTheMask: Underneath his ninja roleplaying, he feels all the stress you would expect someone stuck in a Death Game would feel.
* BlowYouAway: He has the [Air] element. Using it, he can DoubleJump, or coat the air around his limbs, giving his attacks a cutting edge.
* DoubleJump: He can do this with his magecraft.
* TheLeader: Hanzou is the Guild Leader of the [Fuumanin]. He takes charge in their scouting missions.
* LostInCharacter: Hanzou himself thinks about this happening in 17.1.
--> But it was easier to stay in character. The emotions were becoming more real.
* Ninja: He is really into roleplaying as a ninja. As such, his equipment and magecraft lets him use the stereotypical abilities of ninjas in fiction.
* UndyingLoyalty: Has this for Diabel. This is subverted, as he can only do this because Diabel is acting as the BigGood to Kayaba Akihiko's BigBad.
--> But Diabel-sama could only be pure white, pure good, because he defined himself opposing an existence that had dyed himself jet black, pure evil. Kayaba Akihiko. It was because Kayaba made things so simple, and that Diabel was competent and charismatic enough to rise up to that; if it wasn't that simple, then Hanzou might feel a little uncomfortable pretending to be someone else's unquestioning minion. Like he could become complicit.\
But he would die for them. For his people, and for his master.\
And it was good.

!![Thinker]

The Guild Leader of the [Aincrad Liberation Force], a guild which represents the rights of Retired Players.
----
* TheLeader: He heads the [Aincrad Liberation Force] and is basically in charge of the Retired Players.
* NiceGuy: He's one of these.
* NonActionGuy: He is not an active player, but he does help take care of Retired Players by giving more emotional aid to those who need it the most.
* VicePresidentWho: Played with in that Thinker is essentially Diabel's replacement if he dies before Game Clear. But since Diabel has no intention of dying, it's really a fill-in position. Just the same, Thinker is made to attend the meetings and get an understanding of how everything works, just to be safe.

!![Kains] (Takeda Shintarou)

An unfortunate player who tried to pickpocket Johnny Black.
----
* EvilIsEasy: This is basically the reason for him pickpocketing players instead of monsters.

!![Slime Breeder]

A player who constructed the Slime Farm, he's more than a little excited about the possibilities of slimes.
----
* EverythingIsBetterWithExplosions: He made the first grenades in the series by purifying [Red Slime Essence] through alchemy. A bit of prana to make it unstable, and you have three-to-five seconds before it goes boom.
* MadScientist: He's... well, enthusiastic about slimes. He constructed the slime farm on his own, selectively breeds them from their spore drops, and then experiments with their extracted essence to eventually create in-game grenades. One of his long-term projects is the creation of a two-color slime. The fourth generation on are capable of speech; before that they could only suffer.
