! Main Characters:

[[folder:As a whole]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ewhwwimumaae_qz.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Just another day for you and me in paradise...]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: They all have tragic backstories, full-stop.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: For most of them, their crests and heritage were looked down upon because it didn't fit their native culture, but on Shiorel Reef, their unique talents are a godsend.
* LastOfHisKind: They are all the remnants of their respective tribes and cultures, save Heal who is TheExile, in all but name.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Just from the page image alone, going right to left, we have a sentient giant spider, a sentient slime, a human prince whose greatest joy is digging in the dirt, just to see what he'll find, a towering behemoth who wouldn't possibly be identified as a goblin at first glance, a goblin princess turned human and is the minister of agriculture, a goblin shaman blessed with a [Magic King] crest despite the fact that goblins can't use magic, a kobold puppy, and on the far left, what is presumed to be a resurrected dwarf smith who sees little merit in clothing, even when he's at the forge pounding metal and is prone to find himself getting in trouble because he doesn't have the good sense that the gods gave to common rocks, but is a brilliant craftsman and engineer!
* RisingEmpire: At the very start of the story, Shiorel reef was a barren, wind-swept land with no prospects. After a bit of literal digging, and welcoming some ship-wrecked refugees, the land is a verdant and fertile with a booming trade hub between several major nations. Heal's people, misinterpreting his desire to avoid calling himself "king" for fear of sparking conflict with his father, dub him "Emperor."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Heal]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heal.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:[[HeartIsAnAwesomePower What am I supposed to do with this [Cave King] crest?]]]]17th prince of the kingdom of Sanfaris and the protagonist.
----
* AccidentalDiscovery: He manages to activate his [Cave King] crest by stepping into the only cave on Shoriel reef and picking up a pickaxe as he was going through his supplies. He also realizes the true value of the [Taming] skill every citizen of the Sanfaris kingdom is born with when the slime later named Shield asks to be [Tamed] by him through his crest's interface.
* AccidentalProposal: He casually gives Rianne a pearl from a Satan Shell; only for her to turn beat red, claim she's not ready yet, return it and run off. He just guessed it wasn't something she wanted.
* BadassPacifist: He may be opposed to war and will seek out any other viable option, but he is neither weak, foolish, nor timid. He will return any fight that's brought to his people and won't shed a tear if killing you is the only way to make your aggression stop.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Heal could easily be a canonized saint for not going murder crazy after all the crap he's gone through, but his forgiveness is not infinite. When Owen starts sacrificing his own men to summon undead terrors, threatening the lives of everyone on Shiorel for a laugh, Heal's had enough, and the moment the situation's stable, '''he''' offers up Owen for a bit of HumanSacrifice, both to recover Lopez back to life and to make certain that Owen never, ever threatens Shiorel again.
* BreakingTheCycleOfBadParenting: His own parents were absolutely horrendous, traumatizing him by many means, including hanging him from high towers, but he treats Ril and Mel, the two children who have imprinted on him, as a doting parent who treasures their happiness.
* ClassicalAntihero: After being kicked around most of his life, he has a very poor opinion of himself and simply doesn't know how to respond to praise or gratitude, even expecting that Elzan, Rianne, and Varis would want to leave the island the moment their people's galleon showed up.
* DarkerAndEdgier: In the manga, a bit of his childhood is shown. He has a flashback, as a nightmare, where some unidentified children, presumably led by his older brother, bully him, and burned his pet dog, ''which was chained down and couldn't run away'', to ash, pushing him aside, helpless.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: When the Korzack orc pirates crash on his shores, he first wipes out the undead legion harassing them and then, in single combat, conquers the leviathan responsible. Leviathans are so powerful their existence is in the realm of myth and legend.
* DefensiveFeintTrap: When Arder shows up on the shores of Shiorl reef, asking for aid to deal with his wounded, Heal smells a rat, so takes up the guise of a weak, wealthy, and foolish town lord, welcoming them all to the shore without resistance. Had Arder's pleas been genuine, he and his people would have been given food, medicine and medical treatment free of charge and allowed to go on their merry way. Since they attacked as armed invaders, they were all given a glorious smack-down, their property confiscated, and they were sent back home, in chains as prisoners of war, with a letter of formal protest to their king.
* {{Forgiveness}}: A firm believer in it. He will happily welcome all comers to his territory who are willing to cast aside their ancient grudges and take up a new life, even those he and his home country have grudges against. However, the AlwaysChaoticEvil, the unrepentant, and the hostile beasts will be shown no mercy.
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: He just can't comprehend how Owen is so unflinchingly sadistic. The fact that Owen sacrificed the lives of his own men, on a repeated basis, to summon multiple undead terrors, threatening the lives of everyone on Shiorel, just for a laugh at Heal's expense makes absolutely no sense to Heal, at all.
* GoodFeelsGood: He rescues all ship-wreck survivors, regardless of species or origin, because it feels good to do the right thing, not because he's expecting a reward or thinking of personally benefiting somehow. Far more often than not, this impresses said rescues to the point that they plead to serve.
* GoodIsNotDumb: He may be a big softy with a strong penchant for forgiveness, but he's not an idiot. When Arder of the Vadar Dragon Kingdom shows up on his coast and starts using flattery to demand succor, while eying Heal's people up and down, appraising them, Heal quickly realizes he's up to no good so sets up a DefensiveFeintTrap. Arder falls for it, hook, line, and sinker.
* TheGoodKing: While his elder brothers and sisters spent all their time simply flaunting their flashy crests, he actually went and studied everything he could get his hands on in running a kingdom, lore on the local politics, and even books in magic though his own mana pool was piss poor. As he's burdened with a piece of "useless" land, his only population being monsters and shipwreck survivors, he very quickly manages to gather them together and form a stable, self-sufficient community, where he's adored by his subjects, regardless of origin.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: His lackluster crest and abysmal stats were the subject of ridicule in the royal palace, but once he starts setting up shop in his designated land "Shiorel Reef," he very quickly becomes a martial and magical powerhouse that could ''easily'' trump his so-called superior brothers, sisters, and his father the king, if he were to clash with any of them.
* HumbleHero: He truly doesn't know how to handle being praised, and shares the credit for his heroic deeds like it's second nature.
* KissingUnderTheInfluence: Under the effect of World Tree sap, he and Rianne sing, dance, and give mutual {{Love Confession}}s. They're both embarrassed when this wears off, but the feelings are real.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Because he rescued quite a few ship-wrecked people on his island, he now has a thriving community of faithful followers who will happily do whatever he asks.
* MassivelyNumberedSiblings: He is the 17th prince and he still has younger brothers and sisters.
* ReassignmentBackfire: He was obviously sent to a barren uninhabited rock to just be got out of the way, but doing so unlocked the power of his crest and lead him to building a powerful nation.
* ThickerThanWater: Even as monstrous as Owen's been to Heal, Heal still sees him as his younger brother, and it doesn't take much for Rianne to convince him to make one last appeal to Owen's supposed better nature. Owen '''turns down''' Heal's benevolence and chooses to face the death penalty in Sanfaris for his many, many crimes.
* TragicKeepsake: In the manga, he keeps the ashes of his beloved pet in a pendant around his neck...
* TraumaButton: Heights, thanks to the UnwillingSuspension entry below.
* TheUnfavorite: The royal court, including his blood relatives, all treated him with nothing but contempt and disdain, because they couldn't figure out what his crest does, and the rest of his stats were abysmal.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: His subjects and followers on the island "Shoriel Reef" are all completely devoted to him, to the point that they ''begged'' to be [Tamed] by him.
* UnwillingSuspension: His father was fond of punishing him by hanging him from the tallest tower of the castle and leaving him there for extended periods of time...
* UriahGambit: Subjected to one. On his coming of age ceremony, the instant he turned 15, the king personally sent him off to "rule" the Shiorel Reef. The galleon that delivered him and his supplies didn't even stick around long enough to see if he landed safely. Not only was the land he was sent to rule completely barren, but it's so far off the trade routes that even pirates don't go near it. Rather than exile, it was basically a death sentence, as nothing short of a miracle could have saved Heal from a slow and painful death once his supplies ran out.

[[folder:Shield]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shield_6.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Um... Hello. Your name is now Shield!]]A slime that is Heal's first companion and [Tamed] monster.
* ItCanThink: Heal finds out that this little guy is actually highly intelligent and communication is possible through gestures.
* MundaneUtility: Heal is fond of lying on the slime like a pillow, ''and she likes it!''
* PetMonstrosity: It's a slime and the first monster Heal [Tames].
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: [[spoiler: The slime is sharing a body with the spirit of an ancient human princess.]]
* SharingABody: She has the soul of a common slime, [[spoiler: and an ancient human princess.]]
* TheSpeechless: Being a slime, it lacks the ability to speak.
* UndyingLoyalty: Completely loyal to Heal.
* WasOnceAMan: When Heal stumbles upon a graveyard while mining, he and Shield visit a certain grave where Shield briefly manages to conjure a human avatar [[spoiler: of Sheila, the empress of the Valuar Empire, who then explains why Heal has been finding so many facilities and treasures underground.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rianne]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ri_3.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Heal, I will give you my everything!]]Last surviving member of the Gorzen tribe's royalty.
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Her goblin form in the original story was a short, chubby, HollywoodHomely girl. In the manga, she's still child-like but is a CuteMonsterGirl.
* AllLovingHeroine: To the point that she even pleads for '''Owen's''' life after the little psycho had launched multiple undead terrors at the population for a laugh.
* BishonenLine: When Heal provides her with an Ascension stone, and she uses it, she becomes a drop-dead gorgeous human-looking woman.
* CallToAgriculture: Her crest is [Farming], so she's good at raising just about any crop.
* {{Curse}}: Born with the "life shrinking" curse, which her tribe tried and failed to break. Fortunately, Heal had a misogimi stone that breaks all curses, saving her life.
* CuteMonsterGirl: At least in the manga, she starts as one.
* FallenPrincess: Formerly the princess of the Beldan tribe, now only one of many citizens serving under Heal. This is just fine by her as she knows she's treasured.
* ForcedSleep: One of the magics she learned after using an ascension stone to extend her lifespan allows her to put people to sleep by force, which she demonstrates on an overly excited and amorous Kamyu who tries to plant a ForcefulKiss on Heal.
* MeaningfulRename: When introduced, her name was "Ri." After being [Tamed], she became "Rianne."
* OlderThanTheyLook: She's 15, and originally looked like she was in her single digits thanks to the curse she was born with.
* RescueRomance: She is madly in love with Heal because he broke her curse and used up valuable [Turtle stones] to extend her life, without asking anything in return.
* SoleSurvivor: When her home village was wiped out by a raving band of orcs, the rest of the royal family was butchered, with the orcs dancing on their graves. Had it not been for Heal, she would have soon joined them.
* SupremeChef: Everyone loves her cooking. '''Everyone.'''
* TearsOfJoy: Her response when Heal, a human, destroys the curse that was slowly and surely killing her, by stealing her lifespan, and then promises to spend valuable [Turtle Stone] ore trying to restore it, without asking for anything in return.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: She was born with the "life shrinking" curse which consistently shortened her lifespan. After a few weeks, Heal was able to extend her life by 10 years thanks to finding a [Turtle Stone] ore vein, but sadly the ore ran out before he could restore her life fully.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Taran]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9_40.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Shuu]] A gigantic cave-spider found by accident while Heal was mining.
----
* ExtremeOmnivore: Like the rest of her species, she primarily eats mushrooms, but can feed on any plant or animal matter.
* ItCanThink: Unlike all documented members of its species, this spider is sentient. Completely unprompted, it picks up multiple pickaxes and proceeds to mine ore faster than even Heal can keep up.
* MonsterIsAMommy: Heal finds this giant spider with a bunch of little spiders.
* MundaneUtility: Cave spider droppings make excellent topsoil, which Heal and Rianne then use for farming. Cave spider silk is also an excellent material for fabrics, so Taran's silk is used to produce the outer garments of everyone on the island.
* SensingYouAreOutmatched: Heal prepares to blast her with magic, seeing as cave spiders are notorious for catching and eating people. The moment this spider sees that, it scurries away to protect its offspring and then Heal gets the monsters can be [Tamed] prompt from his crest.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mappa]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mappa_7.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:...]]A dwarf that's accidentally resurrected by Heal when he lays down the Dragon Orb as he's running off to rescue the rest of the Beldan goblin tribe when their run-down ship capsizes near the island.
----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's a complete oddball, but he's the best smith in the world, and the only one on the island who can work with mithril.
* CargoCult: He has a near divine reverence towards mythril, even stopping and bowing in prayer for a moment towards the mithrill golem Heal crafts with his [Cave King] crest.
* TheEngineer: He's always crafting new and interesting things, even a steam-powered roller-coaster and a well-pump so the Island can have a hot-springs.
* IronButtMonkey: He keeps getting involved in situations where he is attacked or eaten, but never looks injured afterwards.
* LethalJokeCharacter: He's the one who makes King Louis back off, by just suddenly appearing behind him and slapping his royal robes back on, meaning he's ''also'' got [[Franchise/OnePiece Conqueror's Haki]] and is more skilled in using it.
* LivingRelic: There's no telling how old he is, but he's from a time so long ago that the language has changed.
* NakedFirstImpression: The first time anyone sees him, he's completely nude.
* OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame: Short? Check. SuperStrength? Check. Loves booze? Check. Likes pounding on metal and crafting new things? Check and mate.
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: By using a sacred artifact that only dwarf kings can use, he convinces the dwarf/slime hybrids that he's their king.
* StealthHiBye: He has a real knack to just appear in a room, completely unnoticed.
* SuperStrength: He can, and does, carry a sword of almost pure mithrill over 100 kg as if it was nothing.
* TheVoiceless: He never talks, but he seemingly can understand Heal and the others just fine.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Can you believe this guy's body is that of a 7-year-old child?
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ril]]
A kobold infant Heal finds inside a locked treasure chest, magically sealed inside by her mother to try and keep her safe when her people's ship came under fire from orc pirates.

* CheerfulChild: A sweet and sensitive kid.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Not a trace of malice.
* HappilyAdopted: Sees Heal as Dad and Rianne as Mom, and loves them.
* HumanityEnsues: As is the case with all kobolds, has the form of a puppy as an infant and grows to be a two-legged humanoid as they mature. Since this is normal for their race, the associated trauma normally associated with this change is non-existent.
* SoleSurvivor: Last living member of her royal family.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Heath]]
A giant bee Taran captures and Heal tames.
----
* BewareMyStingerTail: Like real bees, she has a stinger.
* IOweYouMyLife: She was in real bad shape when she showed up, so when she was healed magically, she let herself be tamed and happily set up shop on the island, giving out honey as gratitude.
* MonsterIsAMommy: Heal's citizens build a giant nest for her and she immediately goes about laying eggs. In fact, she appears on the island very pregnant.
* TheVoiceless: Though she can understand words, she can't talk.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Aries]]
A sentient alien octopus Heal and company find while exploring the ancient ruins deep under Shiorel.
----
* CharmPerson: Her ink has powerful, if temporary, mind-control properties. When she was swallowed by a chimera, she used said ink to make it docile, allowing Heal to [Tame] it.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: Her "brilliant strategy" to defeat a chimera was getting herself thrown at it and after being swallowed, using her ink to take control. By the miracle known as PlotArmor, it does.
* MilesGloriosus: She's fond of boasting that she's a powerful strategist and tactician, but she can't formulate a decent battle plan to save her life.
* OctopoidAliens: She's an octopus-like creature and she arrived on Heal's planet from space, along with the rest of her people. We know she's from space since she was among part of the meteor shower that forced the precursor human empire underground.
* StarfishLanguage: Literally. Fortunately, the control device where she was hiding had a magical translation crystal that she uses to communicate.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Leila]]
Heal's {{Childhood Friend|s}} Fiance.
----
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: She and Heal were slated for marriage to each other as small kids, and she likes him on a personal level.
* CulturalRebel: In the Sanfaris kingdom, marriages are always chosen by the parents of the prospective groom and bride. Heal's father annulled the scheduled marriage with near the time a "sacred oracle" had him send Heal off to Shiorel Reef. She doesn't care about any of that and still sees Heal as her fiance, and won't brook any argument.
* PrincessInRags: Her father, a duke in Sanfaris was arrested on charges of rebellion for supposedly flying the flag of the former kingdom conquered by Sanfaris, and she not only set sail to Shiorel reef to flee capture, but actively advocates restoring the Barleon Republic, by force of arms if need be.
* {{Warhawk}}: She openly pushes for war with Sanfaris, and Heal has to concede that may indeed be his only option, considering the personality of King Louie, his older brothers and sisters, and the royal court, who would see Heal's very survival as an act of "treason." '''At best!'''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Elto]]
A dragon Heal and crew find at the bottom of the mine. She was captured and sealed away by the last wielder of the Cave King crest. She agrees to be [Tamed] in exchange for her freedom.
----
* TheArchmage: She is even more knowledgeable about spells than even Baris, and knows many advanced magics.
* BondVillainStupidity: She starts bragging about taking over the world while she's still on the other side of the seal that Heal just opened. Naturally, Heal just seals her up again. She has to agree to be [Tamed] for Heal to consider freeing her completely.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: She suggests burning down the World tree as a magic demonstration, then demonstrates advanced magic by launching it over the horizon, nearly hitting the approaching Sanfaris ship. Then she has Heal test it, but he winds up ''temporarily destroying the atmosphere above the island''!
* EquivalentExchange: She can perform miracles, like resurrection, but at an equal price, life for life, etc.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: She's been sealed away for at least a thousand years, and the world has greatly changed in that time. Her home nation of dragons is in the throes of a massive civil war, for starters.
[[/folder]]

! Sanfaris Kingdom:

[[folder:King Louis]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/louie.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Go and die, forgotten, you embarrassment!]]Heal's father.
----
* AbusiveDad: In addition to the emotional abuse, neglect, and being completely dismissive to Heal, he would either order Heal to be literally left hanging from the castle towers for extended periods of time, completely unattended, giving the poor boy a legitimate fear of heights, or he'd do it himself.
* AmbiguousSituation: After word reaches him that Heal is alive, well, and has been dubbed "emperor" by a gaggle of monsters on Shoriel Reef, the rest of his court is having a FreakOut, worried that Heal might be gearing up for a RoaringRampageOfRevenge for the crap they put him through. As this is going on, he '''smiles'''. Is he proud of his son? Or is he itching to use his "conquest" crest now that he has a nice, shiny PretextForWar?
* TheCaligula: He puts Heal's older siblings on the fast-track to the throne because they've got flashy crests, and lets them completely neglect what it means to rule, but ships Heal off to a deserted, and desolate land, to suffer a slow death.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: He and Heal couldn't be any more different if they actively tried.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Which he lampshades and uses as his biggest "excuse" as to why he made Heal's childhood a living hell.
* OutsideGenreFoe: He's got [[Franchise/OnePiece Conqueror's Haki]], which makes him immune to any physical or magical attack, regardless of attack strength. He can only be fought by someone else with Haki.
* ParentalFavoritism: Heal's siblings could do no wrong while Heal himself could do no right, because Heal's crest was lackluster and the rest of his stats were abysmal.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: Sending Heal to Shoriel Reef turns out to be the right decision, as not only is the cave system the perfect place to activate Heal's crest, but under the barren, rocky landscape is a treasure trove of rare ores, and an ancient Dwarf Ruin.
* SocialDarwinist: The only criteria he has to judge others is how strong and useful they are. When Owen lost his sage crest, the boy immediately became a non-entity.
* StupidEvil: He either wrote or passed a law in his home country that all monsters are to be killed on sight, even though all the citizens are born with a [Taming] skill. As showcased by Heal, [Taming] friendly monsters nets all sorts of short and long term benefits, especially ''war potential'', which the kingdom of Sanfaris desperately needs as they're caught in a MeleeATrois with orcs and goblins, at the minimum.
* ToughLove: How he justifies abusing Heal most his life and then exiling him to Shiorel Reef. "It was necessary for the boy's growth" he says. [[DoubleStandard Yet he let Owen do as he pleased without punishment or guidance.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:9th Princess Thalia]]
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thalia.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:320:Siorel Reef? What's that? Is it tasty?]]
* BrainlessBeauty: She's physically attractive and so ignorant, if not stupid, that a box of rocks is wittier than she is.
* PimpedOutDress: Her usual wear.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:11th prince Valpas]]
[[quoteright:337:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valpas.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:337:Hahaha, a loser territory for a loser brother!]]
----
* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: Discussed. As he sneaks out of the warehouse Heal is using to quarantine the people from the Sanfaris battleship who are getting medical treatment thanks to Owen's "convincing ploy", he tells his cat's paw that if Owen tries something, it's perfectly okay for the little RoyalBrat to meet with an "accident."
* BadLiar: Considering he's a paid killer, one would think he's a ConsummateLiar, but nope. While trying to negotiate his way into Shiorel Reef, he kept trying one flimsy cover-story after another only for Heal to see through all of them with ease.
* BlatantLies: He tries to bluff his way onto Shiorel Reef by claiming his battle-ship was raided by Kamyu's pirates, not realizing said ''former'' pirates now work for Heal. Oops.
* CondescendingCompassion: As Heal is being sentenced to rule over Shiorel Reef, this lout looks down on the poor boy with a mix of contempt and pity.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He may be an asshat and assassin, but even he can't stand Owen's total disregard for life, lack of etiquette, and obsession with abusing people.
* EvilRedhead: He sports red hair and is an arrogant asshat.
* IFightForTheStrongestSide: When he sees how prosperous Heal has been on Shiorel, he tries to seduce Heal to join him in attacking Sanfaris and taking over.
* ProfessionalKiller: In public, he's known as having the crest of numbers, and is the minister of finance. In reality, he has the crest of murder and is King Louie's personal assassin.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He can't stand to work with Owen, and really, who can blame him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:18th prince Owen]]
One of Heal's younger siblings.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Implied. In the manga, one of Heal's pets, that was chained down and couldn't run away, was shown burned alive while Heal was forced to watch helplessly. The manga doesn't name the criminal, but it might well be Owen. In the web-novel, neither Owen nor his crimes are mentioned until chapter 110, at which time it's confirmed that he is the one who burned Heal's pet alive for a laugh.
* AnArmAndALeg: When he attacks King Louis, he loses both arms and a leg as they turn to sand and fall off before the blow lands.
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: He is on record killing a small bird that started singing outside his window because it woke him, and that's bad enough, but then he went on to exterminate every small bird in the royal city, without concern for the collateral damage, because his favorite tactic was just hurling fireballs around until he hit and killed them. Eventually, even King Louie couldn't ignore it any more, and when this psycho was brought to the royal court to explain himself, he retorts "I just wanted to make sure I wasn't woken again." [[KarmaHoudini At this, the king just retorts "I see," and no other punishment was given.]]
* BigBrotherBully: Despite being the younger brother, his favorite joy in life is taking and destroying everything of value to Heal and getting away with it because as far as King Louie's concerned, he can do no wrong while Heal can do no right.
* CruelMercy: On the receving end. His attacks on King Louis left him at death's door, but Heal allows Elto to make him a thrall, extending his live ''in slavery'' to make him confess all his crimes and answer for them.
* EnfanteTerrible: This kid is a psychotic monster with no concern for life. He's listed as hurling fireballs and lethal magic at any animal or person he believes has slighted him and has apparently killed people for a laugh, and he's younger than Heal, who has just become an adult at 15.
* EvilIsNotAToy: By using Necromancy, he murders his allies and subordinates to summon ghosts and other undead terrors, especially a "devil king" born off of Lopez's ashes. First Lopez itself turns on and attacks him until he gains control over it, but when it summons sub-devils, said devils attack him too as he's engaged in EvilGloating, boasting of how once again he's destroying Heal's "toys," ie, the entire population of Shiorel for a laugh. As he's on the ground bleeding and unconscious, Heal's had enough and decides the guy can just bleed to death for all Heal cares, even if Heal manages to win the day, somehow.
* EvilIsPetty: He launched his attack on Shiorel because Heal's men dared to serve him ''apple juice!''
* EvilMakesYouUgly: He deploys his final trump card against King Louis and turns into a huge, ugly, and hairy monstrosity. King Louis is completely unimpressed and doesn't have to do anything but wait patiently as Owen turns his limbs to sand trying to punch and kick him.
* {{Expy}}: Say hello to [[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire Joffrey]]! Only instead, he hurls magic around rather than crossbow bolts.
* FateWorseThanDeath: In chapter 133, Elto comes forward and gives Heal the alternative to offer up a HumanSacrifice to return Lopez to normal, and to life. Heal happily recommends Owen to be that sacrifice, which has Owen shake his shoulders in fear. But when Elto learns that Owen has the Sage crest, and recommends offering that up as a sacrifice instead, Heal happily agrees, at which point Owen thrashes about like crazy, manages to break free of his bonds, spits out his gag, and tries to launch his mightiest spells to no avail, helplessly watching his crest disappear, permanently. Now he's got nothing to defend himself with against the teeth of all the dogs he's kicked during his life, and Valpas has a personal stake in seeing that all said dogs find him.
* HairTriggerTemper: Valpas testifies that this brat completely flips his shit at the slightest inconvenience or difficulty and responds with unmitigated violence.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He shouts at Valpas, the professional killer, "Don't you dare give me orders. You are nothing but scum who kills people at father's command!" when he's a serial killer... Does he think the victims are somehow "less dead" if they're being killed for fun instead?
* HumblePie: While his Sanfaris victims do indeed attack and condemn him off-screen, on screen, he was on suicide watch (TruthInTelevision) while awaiting transport and extradition back to Sanfaris, but in Shiorel, aside from his brief bout of rage when he demanded his crest be returned, and his ill-advised attacks on King Louis, he does not act nor get the treatment normally associated with people who engage in long-term psychopathy, in reality or fiction, he just comes to the off-screen realization that he's been on an extended power-trip, and his actions are too monstrous to be forgiven.
* {{Necromancer}}: In chapter 131, he reveals that he's somehow managed to gain access to necromancer magic which is so, so forbidden in Sanfaris that even researchers don't have access to it, by reanimating Heal's pet, the very same one he burned to ash for a laugh while forcing Heal to watch. Bragging that he can KickTheDog to death and then dig it up to kick it some more.
* NoPlaceForMeThere: He turns down Heal's offer of Asylum in Shiorel, after a miraculous onset of maturity and sanity, and states that his crimes are far too extensive and monstrous to be welcome ''anywhere'', and if he somehow magically escaped the death penalty, he would spend the rest of his days behind bars, as a caged "monster."
* OhCrap: When he comes across Heal performing a rescue operation on the crew of the battleship he's riding, he tries to threaten Heal as he's accustomed, only to stare aghast in horror when he sees that Heal can now overpower him and won't be cowed.
* OneWingedAngel: With the loss of his crest and being disowned by his father, he triggers a ForcedTransformation for power, and attacks the king to "prove his superiority". He loses both arms and one of his legs as a result, with King Louis not only unharmed, but completely uncaring.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: With his "Mage King" crest, he has enough magical power to level the capital city if he wants, and King Louie never, ever bothered to teach him self-restraint.
* RoyalBrat: He's one of the king's sons and is completely unrestrained in hurling out abuse when he's angry or just wants to be amused, never receiving any punishment.
* SelfInflictedHell: As a result of a miraculous and sudden onset of sanity, he comes to terms with how monstrous he's been, refuses asylum on Shiorel, and heads back to Sanfaris to suffer the attacks, condemnation, and death penalty from the victims, and families of victims, of his many, many crimes.
* SerialKiller: Since King Louie never bothers to punish him, he has gone on rampages killing untold numbers of people.
* SmugSnake: He has a major superiority complex and loves to browbeat everyone he comes across. If he comes across someone objectively better, he completely loses it.
* TheSociopath: What else would you call someone who has no concern for the welfare of others and goes around hurling lethal magic for a laugh, relishing the distress of others?
* SuicidalOverconfidence: He not only wanted to start a war with Heal as his ''first'' option, but hindered chances even more by attacking the crew of the ship he was riding by chopping off their arms and legs with his "wind cutter" spell to play on Heal's sympathies.
* VetinariJobSecurity: Deconstructed. Because King Lois coddled him, as a nod to the utility of the Sage Crest, he grew to believe he was completely indispensable to Sanfaris, and that he would be king, no matter what. Surprise, the moment the crest is gone, he's an {{Unperson}}.
* VillainousBreakdown: When his Sage crest is stripped away, he goes completely and totally bonkers.
* ViolenceIsTheOnlyOption: His default response to any situation is to start armed conflict, caring not a whit about the consequences.
* WeHaveReserves: He attacks the crew of the ship he's riding to make his WoundedGazelleGambit "more convincing" stating that the poor sailors should feel ''honored'' to lay their lives down for their king in war. Professional killer though he may be, Valpas would have loved to beat the ever loving crap out of him, but was concerned that fighting Owen would only sink the ship faster.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: When the ship he's riding suffers a mishap en route to the Island of Shiorel Reef, he gets the brilliant idea to use the wounded crew members as a pretext to get Heal to allow them to land and then launch an ambush and start a war. He's completely unaware that Heal already has experience dealing with this tactic thanks to the actions of Arder and his men.

[[caption-width-right:350:Human! How can I believe you?! Aren't our people at war?!]]Formerly Rianne's bodyguard, and now the army general of Shiorel Reef.
----
* TheBigGuy: Despite being a goblin, a race known for being very short, he's huge, even towering over Heal.
* DumbMuscle: He's not a big thinker, at all, and can't really understand anything aside from fighting and manual labor.
* ProperlyParanoid: Prior to seeing Heal break the curse on Princess Ri, he was right to be on guard, as humans and goblins have "kill on sight" orders against each other in all the nearby countries. Heal was well aware of this before he rescued them from the ship-wreck that stranded them on Shiorel.
* UndyingLoyalty: In return for saving the live of Rianne, he has sword complete loyalty to Heal.

[[folder:Varis]]
[[quoteright:290:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/varis_4.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:290:Oh, what strange thing have you found today, Heal-sama?]] The tribe's shaman.
----
* BlessedWithSuck: He was born with the [Magic King] crest, but as a goblin, can't use magic. So the best he could do was become the village shaman, until Heal provided him with an Ascension stone, and he changed into the best race to use magic.
* HornedHumanoid: His "evolved" form has horns.
* MisterExposition: As a shaman, he has a great deal of lore in alchemy, botany, and biology, so whenever Heal makes a discovery, he's the guy Heal goes to first.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: After using an Ascension stone, he looks like the stereotypical demon.
* WingedHumanoid: After using an Ascension stone, he has leathery bat-like wings.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fuel]]
Erzan's daugter.
----
* BishonenLine: With Heal's permission, when she finds an Ascension stone while mining, she uses it and becomes a gorgeous RavenHairIvorySkin human-looking woman.
* CloudCuckoolandersMinder: The primary reason she wants to be stronger than her father is so she can rein him in and protect him from his own idiocy.
* CuteMonsterGirl: In both the original novel and the manga, she's introduced as a cute-looking goblin girl.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: Her biggest dream is to become even stronger than her father, a tall order.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The Tomboy to Rianne's Girly Girl.

! Kobold Tribe:

[[folder:Ashton]]
One of a pair of captains from the kobold fleet.
* EntertaininglyWrong: When he sees the goblins of Berdan tribe, who are mortal enemies of his Tibris tribe, on the shore of Shoriel Reef, after his brother had tracked Ril's scent there, he present, he presumes that Ril was already killed.
* HonorBeforeReason: He and Haines attack Ervan and Taran despite knowing there's no chance of walking away with their lives because the honor of their tribe calls for it.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: When he lost the fight with Erzan, he offered up his head to Erzan, to be handed over as a memorial to the sons of the goblin tribe his Tibris tribe are at war with. As much as Erzan wanted to take him up on it, he was under orders to keep things non-lethal.
* SiblingTeam: He and Haines are brothers and work together.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Haines]]
The other of a pair of kobold captains.
* SiblingTeam: With Ashton.
* SuperSenses: Even for kobolds, who have exceptional sense of smell and excellent eyesight, his [Hunter] crest goes way and above the norm, allowing him to track Ril's scent across the ocean, even though she was locked up in a magic chest. He was also the first to spot Kamyu's flagship when it approached the island, Leviathan close behind.
[[/folder]]

! Kobas Orc Pirates:

[[folder:Kamyu]]
The captain of the orc pirates.
----
* DoomMagnet: She just can't set sail without being set upon by a sea-monster. En route to Shiorel, her fleet gets attacked by a Leviathan. After engaging in a trade mission for Heal, she runs into a Kraken on the way back. If Heal hadn't already set up a giant stone Mappa and a bunch of underwater golems to protect the island, the resulting casualties would have been immense.
* MachoCamp: When introduced, she was a very flamboyant okama, wearing a gold-haired wig and enough makeup to hide her green skin, but still muscled as all get out.
* OurAngelsAreDifferent: After "evolving" she looks like the stereotypical hallmark-card type archangel.
* {{Pirate}}: What her crew used to be.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Combined with ShamelessFanserviceGuy. Kamyu, post evolution, knows she's hot and doesn't hesitate to flaunt it.
* WingedHumanoid: After using an ascension stone, she's got white, feathered wings.
[[/folder]]

! Vadar Dragon Kingdom:

[[folder:Arder]]
Originally tasked by his king with mapping the nearby coasts, islands, and ocean waters, he instead seeks to make himself and his men rich by turning to piracy, attacking any local ports he came across. He regrets it when this results in clashing with the powerful Sanfaris navy, sinking two of his five boats. He takes the remainder of his fleet and flees, bumping into Shiorl reef, which he once again mistakes as easy prey.
----
* AchillesHeel: He and his people are very vulnerable around their ears, which turn into wings once they shape-shift into their Lindwurm forms.
* TheFarmerAndTheViper: He's the viper. He approaches Heal with a legitimate need to have his wounded men and cargo of slaves given medical aid. He fully intended on attacking Heal and his subjects the moment all his troops landed on the island. Heal saw this coming a mile away and was fully prepared.
* FatalFlaw: Greed and undeserved pride.
* StupidEvil: Rather than complete his assigned mission to scout and map the local shores, islands, and waters, he and his crew sought to make themselves rich by turning to piracy against people whose naval capabilities he and his soldiers didn't know. To make this especially stupid, his country just recently stopped being land-locked, so he and his men were total amateurs at sea-faring.
* SunkCostFallacy: Desperate to recoup his losses when his fleet ran afoul of the Sanfaris navy, losing two of his cutters, he tries to conquer Shiorel reef, despite seeing that the locals were well armed. He winds up losing even his pride as a result.
* VoluntaryShapeShifting: He and his men can change to Lindwurms at will, but if their wings are destroyed, they instantly change back to their humanoid forms, with the damage showing up on their ears.
[[/folder]]

! Amolis Republic:

[[folder:Berfalt]]
Introduced as Alder's slave and interpreter. He was captured and enslaved by one of Arder's first forays into piracy.
----
* DebtDetester: He absolutely can't stomach the idea of being released from slavery for free and repeatedly tries to offer something of value to Heal and company. Desperate for traders from his land to other countries, Heal offers an exclusive contract to him, and the loan of one of the three captured Vadar vessels to carry out his work.
* IntrepidMerchant: Reconstructed. His maiden voyage resulted in the loss of his ship and cargo due to pirate attack, with him being enslaved as well. Fortunately for him, he had purchased insurance beforehand, so at the time of his freedom, he can recoup at least part of his losses and start again. Meeting Heal also gave him the opportunity to secure a rich market as one of the first traders between the newly minted Shiorl Empire and his home country of Amolis.
* MadeASlave: He and his crew were enslaved by Arder when the latter first went pirate.
* {{Omniglot}}: As a merchant, he was raised knowing several languages, the languages of Vadar, Amolis, and Sanfaris are among his repertoire.
