!Frieren's New Party

* CripplingOverspecialization:
** Downplayed example, but compared to the Himmel party, Frieren's party is almost entirely offensive-focused due to them lacking a dedicated tank like Eisen or a support/healer like Heiter, with [[spoiler:Sein only sticking around for a short time.]] Stark himself, while durable, lacked the wide-area defensive skills and experience his master Eisen had. A well-timed poison or curse also easily wiped out the whole party if Sein wasn't there.
** In general, Frieren's party is very focused on magic, with Stark being the only person in the party who lacks magic of any kind. While normally not a issue because of how powerful Frieren is, when a foe comes around that is resistant to magic or able to counter in some way, they only really have Stark to rely on. This was also the reason Stark was recruited, as Frieren and Fern couldn't bypass a dragon's defenses with magic.
* DemonSlaying: Frieren is infamous for being the most dreaded demon hunter in history. She has improved Qual's {{armor piercing|attack}} [[OneHitKill Zoltraak]] to be extremely effective against demons, and, as her master, has taught Fern to do this, too. Stark was trained by the warrior that helped take down the Demon King.
* {{Foil}}: Fern and Stark contrast in several different ways. Fern is a mage who fights at range, was raised by a priest, and is generally TheStoic with only occasional moments of being NotSoAboveItAll. Stark is a warrior who fights up close, was raised by a warrior, and is much more open with his emotions and ManChild tendencies, but can be serious when the situation calls for it. Despite all this, they are still very similar, with both being orphans who were found and raised by two great heroes (Heiter and Eisen, respectively), have their own moments of playing the OnlySaneMan, and are both [[NiceGuy friendly individuals]] with a [[ChronicHeroSyndrome strong sense of justice]]. Is it any wonder they [[OppositesAttract start falling for each other?]]
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** ''Sanguine'': Sein is the most easy-going, outwardly friendly, and easily controlled by his vices. While this may make for an irresponsible degenerate (which he was until he joined the party), his communication skills meant the group could rely on him to gather information or integrate into a population much better, or mediate when members fought (primarily Fern and Stark).
** ''Eclectic'': Fern. Kind and the OnlySaneMan of the group, she's very much eager to help others, but she's also strict, usually the one ordering others around, and the one who'd slap some sense when the other members are being particularly silly. She's the most outwardly disciplined.
** ''Melancholic'': Stark. More easy-going than Fern but more restrained than Sein, he's a CowardlyLion warrior who's easy to admire for the commonfolk because of his naturally kind heart. While he doesn't have the attention to detail this trait usually entails, he's also quite emotional and moody, whether during battle or out of it.
** ''Phlegmatic'': Because she's an elf, Frieren is unbelievably lazy and apathetic to normal human relations, often making her seem aloof and cold-hearted. Most times, she just can't be bothered to relate or connect to others, though she's gotten better recently. Notably, both Fern and Stark note this also means she's the least likely to have emotions clouding her judgement.
* GenerationXerox: Fern and Stark are the disciples of three of the four heroes that defeated the Demon King, and Sein was inspired by Heiter as a child. All three take after them in some way:
** Fern is basically the present generation's Frieren, a stoic-yet-warm woman who lost her family, and was adopted and taught magic by an eccentric archmage. Her relationship with Frieren is much like Frieren's relationship with Flamme used to be.
** Stark is Eisen's SuperiorSuccessor, except for his inexperience, which is why he's a much bigger CowardlyLion than Eisen was.
** Sein is a priest who loves smoking, gambling, and drinking. He is in a way very similar to Heiter.
* KnightErrant: Frieren and Fern [[WalkingTheEarth wander the world]] to help people however they can and acquire magic while doing so. Stark joins them after they push him to learn to fight against monsters. They sometimes coincidentally get rid of dangerous monsters on their way, like when they pass by Graf Granat's town and encounter Aura and her forces.
* ParentalAbandonment: Frieren, Fern and Stark are all the victims of demons and war.
** Frieren's village was obliterated by demons over 1000 years ago. Her foster parent, who raised and trained her, was human, and so Frieren has also long outlived her.
** Fern is a war orphan, whose foster father, Heiter, has passed away.
** Stark abandoned his home village when it was attacked by demons.
** Sein also lost his parents, though he was [[PromotionToParent raised by his big brother]] instead.
* PerpetualPoverty: Frieren's party is constantly struggling with money. There are largely two reasons for that: one, Frieren seldom accepts money as a reward for the requests she receives, especially if instead a grimoire is an option, and two, Frieren constantly buys a lot of magical junk with the money she has, much to Fern's dismay. What they earn is always barely enough to cover their living expenses, and when they do, they also somewhat splurge on food. There are times they have earned large sums, but Frieren's spending habits always result in them not lasting long.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Much like the Hero Party before them, this group is quite an odd collection of individuals, consisting of the same elven mage (now more social but also [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} quite eccentric]]), her stoic apprentice, a cowardly warrior, and ([[GuestStarPartyMember occasionally]]) an apathetic priest.

->''"I... I hardly knew anything about him... We only traveled together for ten years... I knew human lives were short... Why didn't I try to get to know him better?"''
\
An elven mage who has lived for over a thousand years. She was part of the Hero Party that defeated the Demon King, and spent the next 50 years wandering the world to study magic. She takes in Fern and Stark after the deaths of Heiter and Himmel, and is on her way to find Aureole, the land where souls rest.
----
* ACupAngst: She has been flat-chested for a thousand years, and if Serie is any indication, then her body won't change much from this no matter how long she lives. She occasionally gets annoyed at Fern being substantially more well-endowed, and ponders just what it is that makes them different (as they eat the same things), though she usually doesn't get petty over it.
* TheAce: Frieren is a gifted master of all kinds of magic. Be it DispelMagic, [[MindOverMatter flight/telekinesis]], offensive and defensive magic, or mundane UtilityMagic, she can do this all, and she has a mana reservoir that she has increased over the span of 1000 years.
* ActionGirl: Frieren is a demon hunter who wields powerful magic as a mage.
* AesopAmnesia: PlayedForLaughs. If she encounters a mimic, she ''will'' fall for it, no matter how many warnings her comrades give her. She even has a spell to detect them, but disregards it on the 1% chance that it's a false positive.
* AlmightyJanitor: Technically, Frieren is just an unregistered, drifting mage in the eyes of the Continental Magic Association. There's no system that recognizes her prowess since she doesn't care for any registry, as she thinks these rules change too fast for her to bother. She believes an emblem she carries around is enough proof of her skill in magic but very few mages know the significance of it when she brings it out. [[spoiler:When she grudgingly agrees to participate in an exam to get proper qualifications to match her skill level, she outperforms pretty much every other mage there combined only to fail because Serie and her have clashing ideologies.]]
* AlwaysABiggerFish: Frieren is ''dramatically'' overqualified for the title of first-class mage, which many other participants in the first-class exam notice; even when all of them are monsters in their own right, Frieren is on a whole other level. The only reason she isn't officially first-class is because [[JerkassToOne Serie (the bigger fish to Frieren herself) dislikes her specifically]]. Frieren correctly assumes that hasn't changed, and she's only "participating" in the exam for the sake of putting in a good word for Fern anyway.
* AntiMagic: Frieren possesses strong resistance against restraint and hypnosis magic, and is in addition to that extremely proficient at figuring out ways to DispelMagic. Her ability to analyze and counter other mages' abilities is so great she is one of the main contributors of incorporating Qual's killing magic into mankind's magic system and developing a defensive shield against it. She also was able to break Serie's impenetrable barrier during the First-Class Mage exam (which the latter's disciples considered impossible). In addition to that, she broke Böse the Immortal's barrier and [[spoiler:reverses ''two'' Sages of Destruction's curses, magic that is said to be incomprehensible and uncounterable for mankind]].
* TheArchmage: Without a doubt one of the strongest mages that have ever existed, perhaps second only to Serie, at least in terms of mana amount (Frieren remarks that she has lost 11 times to mages who had less mana than her). In Chapter 45, after the first-class mages recognize her, they refer to her as the last Great Mage.
* BadassAdorable: At a glance she's merely a petite, cute elf girl... who's one of the oldest and strongest mages in all the land.
* BadassBoast: While generally humble and desiring to avoid attention, she's proud of the fact the Hero Party has conquered the most dungeons in all of history, and she herself is likely the strongest still-active mage in existence (bar the usually inactive Serie). When "boasting" of her own abilities it is a bit zigzagged, as she does not speak in a cocky manner but more matter-of-fact, in a tone that also communicates how dead serious she is in that boast. Notable early examples are when she tells Draht that she is not just stronger than him but stronger than his leader Aura, or when she reveals to Aura that she is over a thousand years old after Aura boasts of being five hundred (while simultaneously showing her the true strength of her mana).
* BadassBookworm: One of Frieren's favorite hobbies is to gather and read books, especially about magic. She also is one of the strongest mages in the world. One of Frieren's notable strengths is her ability to [[AwesomenessByAnalysis analyze spells]] and coming up with ways to dispel them.
* BadLiar: Frieren is really bad at hiding things since she'll make weird faces when it comes time for her to lie. Fern will see it instantly in her face when Frieren is lying.
* BigEater: Despite her size, she can ''really'' eat, once demolishing a mountain of steaks by herself. She doesn't do this normally, but does so when she finds especially tasty food, as experience has taught her there is a good chance next time she tries the food (i.e. decades later) the recipe and taste will have changed. So she eats as if it is the last time she will ever have that particular dish.
* BirdsOfAFeather: Frieren has lost her family and home to demons, much like her predecessor Flamme and her apprentice Fern. What they all have in common and bond over is their love and talent for magic.
* BrilliantButLazy: While she does enjoy adventuring and can be quite thorough about it, Frieren would also love nothing more than to just relax, study magic, and sleep in every day. If left to her own devices she usually won't get out of bed on her own until at least noon. At one point early in the series she is dramatically disappointed when, instead of leisurely studying magic for a year or two until they get permission to go through a check point, the guards recognize her and, [[EntertaininglyWrong under the assumption]] that she is on the way north to help fight off the Demon King's remnants, let her pass immediately.
* BrutalHonesty: Frieren [[BadLiar isn't the type of woman who lies very well]], her words are often blunt and straight to the point. For instance, she refuses to take in Fern initially, because Fern isn't strong enough, would only burden Frieren and unnecessarily risk her own life.
* ButtMonkey: When it comes to the daily life matters of towns and laying back in between the travails and battles, Frieren is [[NoHeroToHisValet prone to Fern giving her heck and a half for her laziness and bad habits]]. When it comes down to it, most of the series' early humor is at her expense, and her childish habits of hunting for new tomes and exploring every corner ''usually'' gets her [[RunningGag stuck in a Mimic]] or some other tight space only she can fit into even later on. You wouldn't even think she's [[AlmightyJanitor one of the most powerful mages alive in the world.]] Once Stark enters the party, some of this gets traded off though not entirely.
* ChasteHero: Due to elves generally experiencing little in the way of romantic and sexual attraction, Frieren has little to no understanding of romance. She didn't understand the implications of Himmel putting a ring on her finger and also, she doesn't seem to perceive the UnresolvedSexualTension between Fern and Stark; though she seems to have realized ''something'' is going on between Fern and Stark. However it might just be that by human standards, elves have overly long courting periods as over time, Frieren seems to have started to understand Himmel's feelings for her and is beginning to reciprocate them, unfortunately long after he has died of old age.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Frieren is rather rude, distant and appears to be very cold. She also doesn't immediately reach out to help people (which kind of disappoints Wirbel in Chapter 59) and she'd rather run away than fight unless it's absolutely necessary (or is faced with a demon, which she is likely to try to kill on sight). The latter is a philosophy Flamme taught her after Frieren barely survived against a demon general, though Himmel's influence slowly changed her to become more classically heroic.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Frieren has a different sense of time, so she loves to waste a few years on something because for her it's a fleeting moment, which frequently clashes with Fern and Stark's views, as they are human and a year is a very long time in their lives. [[CloudcuckoolandersMinder Fern is usually the one who has to keep Frieren in check]].
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Frieren has a hobby of collecting all kinds of strange objects, like the skull of a monster or a drug that melts clothes. She also collects weird UtilityMagic which produces tea or shaved ice, or magic that can de-rust bronze statues. She earnestly started collecting all kinds of magic as a hobby after her comrades praised her for casting mundane spells.
* CombatPragmatist: In battle with demons and other monsters, Frieren is ruthless. If she senses a demon, she will usually attack on sight, and she has no patience to listen to their deceptive pleas for mercy. She is more gentle in combat with human mages, at least when she can afford to be.
* TheCutie: Part of the reason why her parties put up with her eccentricities is they find her to be cute beyond compare.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the stock elf fantasy party member who usually serenely symbolizes that some form of the adventure is imperishable, even as their less long-lived friends age and even perish. However, they aren't the protagonists of this story--the elf left behind is--and she resolves to learn more about humanity after realizing just how short their lives really are in comparison to hers.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Hates onions, as revealed when Fern feeds them to her while she's [[spoiler:analyzing Macht's memories]]. Later, the title page of chapter 121, where Frieren and co. get a vase that gives anyone who sleeps near it nightmares, Frieren is falling into a bunch of onions, which is implied to be the nightmare she has when she sleeps with the vase next to her head at the end of the chapter.
* TheDreaded: Demons fear her, as she has sent thousands of them to their deaths. She's known among demons as "Frieren The Slayer" ("Sousou no Frieren") [[TitleDrop which is a play on words on the manga's title]]. She explicitly is stated to have killed more demons than any other mage in history.
* TheDrifter: At the start of the story, Frieren has no set goal and just goes wherever she wants to study magic. After meeting Eisen again, she sets out on a journey with Fern to find Aureole.
* EmotionlessGirl: Subverted. Frieren appears to be this, but it's not really the case. One of the themes of the story is the fact that her incredible lifespan has drastically affected how she recognizes and processes emotions. As time progresses and she grows closer to her companions, she becomes less emotionally distant and even smiles more often.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: Frieren is a mage that has already studied magic for a thousand years and is one of the most well-respected mages in the world. She's this even ''before'' Himmel scouted her into the Hero Party almost a century ago.
* FakeWeakness: [[spoiler:Frieren has held back her mana for over 1000 years to the point that it's second nature to her, even when she sleeps. She does this explicitly to deceive demons to make them underestimate her. When she meets an opponent who can match her restrained self, [[IAmNotLeftHanded she can just release more power]].]]
* FantasticRacism: She loathes demons and will try to kill them on sight. This is justified though, as demons have tried to exterminate the entire elven race (killing everyone else in her home village), and they are also incompatible to live in peace with mankind. [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] with the Demon King and Macht. She understood that, unlike the majority of their race, both of these individuals genuinely sought to understand humanity and even find a way to coexist with them. The problem is that their attempts involved the deaths of thousands just to understand emotions such as guilt and rage. Frieren respected and even somewhat admired their goal, but she could never forgive their methods, plus she knew that it would be AllForNothing since [[TheSociopath demons are incapable of learning these emotions]], [[ReluctantPsycho even if they wanted to]], or that on the off chance they succeeded it would take so long that humans would be extinct by then.
* GiftGivingGaffe: Played for laughs. Frieren is shown to be a particularly bad gift-giver because of her penchant for choosing surprisingly inappropriate and raunchy stuff, especially when it comes to giving Stark birthday gifts. In the occasions where this has happened, Fern will either immediately shut it down, or make Frieren realize how bad the gift actually is.
* GirlishPigtails: Even though she's much older than she appears, her pigtail hairstyle suits her youthful appearance.
* {{Greed}}: Played as both a virtue and a vice. On the positive side of things, Frieren has an inexhaustible drive to learn, explore, and accumulate loot for the sake of doing so, which has allowed her to live a largely rich and eventful life. Conversely, this can also cause her to take some truly unneeded risks on the off chance she can gain something (see: mimics), or to neglect her personal ties as she thoughtlessly dives into her current obsession (sometimes for decades).
* HairstyleInertia: She has kept the same pigtails-hairstyle for hundreds of years after Flamme's death. Before that, she just let her hair down.
* HeavenSeeker: Her current journey is to find the apparent location of heaven. Though not totally convinced that it even exists, she does so for the possibility of meeting Himmel again.
* HumanizingTears: Outside of a humorous moment where she loses composure in a mimic, she seemed completely emotionless and detached from those around her, until she cried at Himmel's funeral, which was when she openly showed grief for possibly the first time in her very long life.
* HumbleHeroine: Despite being one of the four legendary heroes that defeated the Demon King, Frieren is mostly forgotten, and while there are statues of her around the world, [[RecognitionFailure few are able to recognize her]]. This suits Frieren, who has stayed hidden for the majority of her life and followed her master's wish to live a modest and humble life. She doesn't need the attention, she already made her mark in history when she defeated the Demon King.
* ImmortalImmaturity: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. While Frieren isn't that childish, she isn't particularly mature, either, to the point that Fern often acts in a more proper manner than Frieren, and Sein thinks of her as a very child-like person. This seems to be justified as she might still be a young girl by elf standards, and she doesn't really have the same amount of maturing experiences that a human would have, like having to take care of younger people, keeping a job, etc., making her come across as less of an adult than Sein. That said, it may also be her personality, since the much older Serie can be even more childish.
* InvincibleHero: Frieren is miles ahead in power than almost anyone in the world, having spent a thousand years collecting magic, fighting, honing her skill, and was trained by the greatest human mage to ever live. Even extremely powerful enemies can be easily overwhelmed by her. This is justified since she had more time to train her powers than almost anyone alive, and she even mentions that Fern will simply never catch up to her since she just has too much experience on her. However, Frieren notes in Chapter 37 that, while her mana is great, there are many other factors that determine the strength of a mage like willpower, talent, technique and experience. She has been beaten by eleven mages that had less mana than her of which four were demons, one was an elf and the other six were humans. [[spoiler:Solitär would've killed her had Fern not arrived in time, since their fight has become a battle of attrition with each steadily wounding the other, and while their mana levels were similar, Frieren's body was less durable than Solitär's.]]
* ItsTheJourneyThatCounts: When offered by Flamme's master, Serie, any magic she desires, Frieren refuses. What she enjoys most is pursuing magic on her own. Mages of older generations like Denken seem to agree with her.
* ItWasAGift: In Chapter 30, Frieren loses a ring she is very attached to. It was a gift from Himmel that she picked out. The ring has a mirrored lotus design, which stands for "eternal love", though unlike Himmel, Frieren was not aware of the meaning.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Exaggerated. She comes off as if she has a LackOfEmpathy, but she does care about her friends in her own way and just has trouble showing it.
* TheLeader: The levelheaded kind. Due to her old age, Frieren is the most experienced and strongest adventurer and fighter in her group who has SeenItAll already. While she often deferred to Himmel during her journey with him, in the present she is clearly the overall leader. That said, Frieren has expressed she has no desire to be a team leader, and so she rarely ever actively asserts authority unless she needs to, with Fern and Stark more just seeking her advice on most things and usually following it.
* LivingLegend: After spending most of her long life in obscurity, Frieren became famous as part of the party who defeated the Demon King. The legend seems to be fading in the memories of the people though, with the younger generations less likely to know who she is.
* LonerTurnedFriend: Before she joined Himmel's party, Frieren was a loner who lived completely isolated from society in the woods. After traveling with Himmel, Heiter and Eisen for a decade, she learned to value bonds and friendship, leading her to form a party of her own many years later.
* LongLived: Elves are virtually immortal, and Frieren has been alive for over a thousand years. One of the major conflicts of the manga is how having so much time on her hands made time mean less to her, and harder to relate to humans, whose lives are so short that they make much more in shorter amounts of time than her, and to whom time means much more.
* LoveEpiphany: Played with. One of the unintended consequences of her new journey after Himmel's death is that she is gradually recognizing how much he loved her, as well as how much she misses him and wants to do good by him. [[spoiler:Made more overt in the Time Loop arc, in the interlude after the very difficult fight against Solitar, where after touching a monument for the Goddess, Frieren's mind hoops back to her own self who was still travelling with Himmel in their journey to defeat the Demon King. The climax of this arc is Frieren showing how much her complex elven feelings has undoubtedly shaped into romantic love for Himmel; first, as Frieren has a conversation with Voll, detailing Frieren's reshaped feelings, and finally as Grausam's curse of inflicting absolute realistic dreams of a target's innermost desire. Frieren actually intertwined with Himmel's dream of marrying each other--at no point it is said Himmel influenced her, or vice versa--it is as if both had the same dream and could interact. Frieren herself makes a point she is completely powerless against Grausam's curse, and she could only realize with Himmel's help that they were in a dream; to note: ''Frieren'' was actually the one who initiated the kiss in their marriage vow--''Himmel'' was the one who stopped her after realizing it was all an illusion.]]
* MaamShock: Albeit subtly, Frieren has expressed that she dislikes being referred to as old, and has never quite gotten over Stark calling her a "hag". She doesn't act upon it, but she brings it up frequently enough for Stark to not forget that she's still slighted by him.
* MagneticHero: She's so charismatic that both parties she's belonged to have made a priority to keep her entertained and cater to her whims, even when she's the least pushy and most chill individual in said parties. If Frieren is having fun, everyone around her is too.
* MayflyDecemberFriendship: As an elf, Frieren is by far one of the oldest existences in the story. She has or will outlive all the friends she has made in her very long life.
* MeaningfulName: Frieren is German for "freezing" (as in "feeling cold"). Fittingly, she doesn't like cold weather at all. Also, Frieren doesn't know it, but she seeks the warmth of social interaction with other people.
* MerlinAndNimue:
** Frieren is an ancient living being, who is over 1000 years old. Her apprentice, Fern, is a normal human who is still in her teens.
** Implied to be inverted with Frieren and her master, Flamme. Frieren looked almost the same a thousand years before the story begins, which means that Flamme was probably actually younger than Frieren when they met.
* MinidressOfPower: She's an extremely powerful sorceress whose standard outfit is a white minidress.
* MyGreatestFailure: Frieren regrets at Himmel's funeral how she didn't spend more time with him when she had the chance, having only gone to see him to fulfill a promise they made to see the Era Meteors. It's implied to be why she stays with Heiter in his final years and the purpose of her new quest is to reach Aureole to hopefully talk to Himmel again (Aureole being a type of Valhalla where the souls of heroes and mighty people dwell, and where Frieren's master Flamme apparently came to dwell as well).
* MysticalWhiteHair: She's an [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld ancient]] and highly magically powerful elf with silver hair.
* NakedPeopleAreFunny: Despite not having much of a perverse side to her, some of the stranger spells and trinkets among her collection of magic include a spell that allows the user to [[XRayVision see through clothes]] as well has a potion that [[TheNudifier can dissolve the user's clothing.]] Fern understanably doesn't see the point.
* {{Naytheist}}: Downplayed, but she is fairly skeptical regarding worship of the goddess that most of her world worships. While she acknowledges this goddess did interact with the world during the Era of Mythology, the fact she has seemingly made no direct appearances since then leads her to question the goddess' relevance in the present world.
* NoSocialSkills: Isolating herself and barely interacting with society for a long time will do that, which is why she may sometimes say [[InnocentlyInsensitive really rude things without realizing it]]. She wants to improve on that with Fern.
* NotAMorningPerson: She has trouble waking up early, with Fern being the one that has to drag her out of bed every morning. [[spoiler:This is at least partially due to constantly limiting her powers, though, which tires her out.]]
* NotSoStoic: As early as the first chapter, Frieren demonstrates she does have emotions behind her stoic facade when she cries at Himmel's funeral. Even before this it done in a PlayedForLaughs manner as the normally unflappable elf tends to lose all composure whenever a mimic grabs her.
* ObliviousToLove: Frieren has a general understanding of emotions, but she's incredibly dense when it comes to romantic affection directed at herself. She spent a decade in Himmel's party and never understood that he was pining for her the whole time, and that it was more mutual than she ever realized.
* TheOlderImmortal: She's over a thousand years old, making her several centuries older than any other member of a long-lived species in the setting, such as dwarves and demons. However, the few other elves seen all seem to be far older than even her.
* OldMaster: Justified. The power of a mage depends on how much they have trained, and Frieren has trained for over a millennium. She also is an experienced adventurer who took down the Demon King.
* OnceAnEpisode: If the party has to search for anything, you can near-entirely be assured that Frieren is going to end up stuck in something from the head down to the waist due to her curiosity and {{Cloudcuckoolander}} habits. From bushes, to holes in the wall, to ''being stuck in a mimic's mouth.''
* OutsideContextProblem: As Serie explains, the First Class Mage Exam is simply not designed to account for a mage of Frieren's power participating in it. Her involvement skews the results such that several of the weaker examinees who would have normally been weeded out by the second trial are able to pass it. This forces Serie to interview the remaining mages herself instead of going forward with the third trial, as it would have killed most of them. [[spoiler:Amusingly, she fails the obviously overqualified Frieren out of petty spite.]]
* OxymoronicBeing: She's an incredibly old child, and both of these traits are in full view in most episodes. She is in many ways less mature than Fern, but also old, wise and very experienced.
* ParentalSubstitute: She is both Fern's foster mother and master.
* PhotographicMemory: Frieren has very good memory, able to recall details from across her thousand-plus years of life. This includes the UtilityMagic she collects as a hobby, as well as an encyclopedic knowledge of demons and all their weaknesses. Even things she claims to have forgotten (like her first meeting with Himmel) are usually recalled shortly after.
* PlayfulCatSmile: When feeling playful or the when scene calls for humor, she sports a catlike <(´⌯ ̫⌯`)> smile.
* PlayingWithFire: Before resorting to "ordinary attack magic" (variations of Zoltraak) in the present, Frieren was mostly using fire magic offensively.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Frieren is naturally pretty quiet, especially about her past and emotions, which can easily frustrate the far more mortal Fern when it seems like Frieren is wasting time that is in finite quantities for humans. For example, Fern was getting very upset about Frieren spending months trying to track down a specific kind of flower to put around a statue of Himmel and couldn't understand what was so special about THIS flower, but it actually ''is'' a special flower: Himmel wanted to show her these flowers blooming one day, but died before he got the chance. Later, after losing a ring, Frieren spends some time looking for it and is about to give up to keep Fern happy... until she mentions offhandedly that it was a gift from Himmel, causing Fern to get ''much'' more serious about finding it.
* ProperlyParanoid: When she sees a human with a demon who is supposedly trying to negotiate peace, Frieren immediately tries to attack the demon as if he was a bloodthirsty beast. The villagers think she's being paranoid and lock her up in a prison. Turns out Frieren was right and the demons are just deceiving the humans in an attempt to take over the town.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: She wears black tights with her white minidress, fitting her composed and controlled personality.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Frieren could pass for a teenager, but in truth is over 1000 years old, having been found and trained by humanity's greatest mage Flamme over 1000 years before the start of the story. In flashbacks to her training, she looks at most a couple of years younger than she does at present.
* RedBaron: She is widely known as ''[[TitleDrop Sousou no Frieren]]'' -- Frieren the Undertaker, for sending thousands of demons (and mimics) to an early grave.
* RunningGag: She has several specific to her through the series:
** Frieren wanting to spend an inordinate amount of time at a given task and Fern having to dissuade her.
** Frieren getting trapped in mimics, as she will always bank on the 1% chance the mimic detection spell is a false positive.
** Frieren tossing and turning in her sleep so that she ends up halfway out of her bed by morning (and often halfway in Fern's bed).
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: The amount of effort she's put into things like suppressing her mana as much as possible has caused her to miss out on time she could have used for training her skill in magic, which leaves her significantly more skilled than most human mages but not really to the extent you would expect given her age. She also never managed to learn to keep her mana detection up while defending, which is an incredibly basic thing for a normal mage to do.
* SeekerArchetype: Frieren is constantly traveling to explore the world, to learn more about the region, vegetation and magic. She collects all kinds of spells, be it XRayVision or some useless UtilityMagic like a spell that turns sweet grapes into sour ones.
* SeenItAll: Thanks to being a millennia old veteran mage and seasoned adventurer, there isn't much that can surprise her. Strange magics and SecretTestOfCharacter were simply met with her usual deadpan acceptance. Downplayed in that there are many things Frieren hasn't seen herself, as well as a lot of knowledge she has never cared to learn (after all, for roughly half her life she lived in seclusion), but for anything of interest to her chances are she has at least heard of it. Her stoic reactions are implied to often be due more to her mage training than to not actually being surprised by anything, and there are things (like potential new grimoires) that can get her quite enthusiastic no matter how many times she experiences them.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Fern and Stark, as she subtly nudges them together as much as she can.
* ShockAndAwe: One of Frieren's other signature spells before mostly using Zoltraak was Judradjim, a spell with which she sends out several bolts of lightning at her opponent.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: She had a habit of leaving Fern alone in combat situations, especially earlier during their travels; this, of course, because she's aware that Fern is more than capable of dealing with it, even when Fern herself wasn't aware.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: Can easily fall asleep, even in the middle of the day. It's very difficult to wake her up then. [[spoiler:Though this is probably HeroicRROD, as Frieren is constantly limiting her mana, which is very tiring.]]
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She was the only female member of Himmel's party.
* SolitarySorceress: Frieren used to live for many years in the same forest where she lived with Flamme. She was sought out by Heiter and Himmel, after they heard rumors about a powerful mage living nearby.
* SquishyWizard: By her own admission. She states that mages tend to be very vulnerable at close distances and that a sufficiently skilled warrior can make short work of them if they get close enough, [[spoiler:such as the assassin Radar, who was able to quickly subdue her after closing the distance before Frieren could cast any defensive magic. That said, this is only a relative thing. Mages are squishy compared to defensive warriors, but can still take a lot more damage than a normal person, with the demon Solitär marveling at Frieren's resilience]].
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She has the same apathetic expression most of the time, but very rarely reveals strong emotional outbursts and shows a smile once in a while when she's happy.
* TalentedButTrained: Frieren was a prodigy in magic, but still trained under one of the greatest mages that have ever lived. She has honed her strength over more than 1000 years and still seeks to learn and improve her magic to this day.
* TeamMom: Frieren has some difficulty understanding human relationships and emotions, but she's hundreds of years older than anyone in her current party and tends to assume a motherly role towards them, even to Sein who is an adult. She especially acts this way towards Fern, whom she helped raise.
* TimeDissonance: She's so LongLived that she perceives time completely differently from everyone else. She often talks about decades as if they were weeks.
* TokenImmortal: In both of the parties she has joined, Frieren is the only member whose lifespan can extend to millennia. After her old comrade Himmel dies of old age, Frieren wants to try and understand how fleeting life is for her human companions.
* TokenMiniMoe: In both Himmel's party and her current party, Frieren looks much younger than her teammates, due to having the body of a teen girl despite being [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld hundreds of years old]].
* TooMuchAlike: After meeting Sein in Chapter 27, Frieren notices that he and her are very similar, which she notes is probably the reason she doesn't like him.
* TragicKeepsake: Frieren wears Flamme's earrings and uses the latter's magic staff at all times.
* TranquilFury: She tries blasting Lügner the second she sees him, and even while being restrained, her tone and expression don't change. However, Lügner muses on the killing intent within her calm gaze. This is her default state toward demons. She hates them with an extreme passion, but you would never know it from her expression when fighting them.
* UnskilledButStrong: While she has more skill than most human mages, for her age she's actually somewhat lacking, though only someone like Serie would notice. Frieren has dedicated her life to mastering only magic and skills which can help kill demons as efficiently as possible and every other spell she learns is more a hobby than magic she seeks to master. Some of the more elegant and spectacular magic Serie is fond of eludes Frieren, or she simply can't be bothered to learn it. In summary, Serie believes Frieren would be substantially more powerful overall if she had devoted the time she spent in honing her mana control to other areas of magical study.
* VocalDissonance: Despite looking like a teenager, she has a pretty deep voice, particularly in the English dub. Not giving her the voice of a child makes it easier to understand that she ''is'' old, no matter how she looks.
* WeaksauceWeakness:
** Despite being a sorceress with incredible magical power and a thousand years of world experience, Frieren is easily tricked by mimics. Whenever she runs into one disguised as a coffin chest, she gets fooled and trapped by it.
** On a more serious note, long-living species like elves are terribly slow at picking up magical trends and education standards, requiring hundreds of years just to train out these small errors and reflexively defend against newer attacks. Frieren's, for example, is the interruption of mana detection whenever she's using modern defense magic against Zoltraak. Humans are drilled to eliminate this tendency since they are small, and only require a few years to do so. [[spoiler:This is why against Solitär, whose combat style perfectly exploits these weaknesses, Frieren is nearly killed and wins only from Fern's assistance.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Unlike Himmel, when she saw a demon child she wanted to kill her on sight. Himmel was fooled by the girl's appearance and only came to regret his mistake later when the demon killed the man who took her in, at which point Frieren promptly executed her. However, this almost certainly only applies to demons: To Frieren, the demon girl was no more of a person than a man eating lion, no matter what she looked like.

->''"It doesn't matter whether I'm a mage or not. Learning how to survive on my own will be the way I return his kindness. 'She was worth saving,' and 'She'll be fine on her own.' That's what I want him to feel."''
\
An orphan girl who was adopted and trained as a pupil by Heiter, who had noticed her potential as a mage. Frieren becomes her mentor in magic at Heiter's request. After he passes away, Fern decides to accompany Frieren in her travels and continue training under her.
----
* AlwaysAChildToParent: Fern sometimes gets annoyed with Frieren for treating her like she's still a child. While Frieren does acknowledge her as a full-fledged mage, she can't help but still see Fern as a little girl at times, since to her, [[TimeDissonance Fern was a child just the day before]].
* AmbiguouslyBi: She seems to mostly be interested in men, but she also reacts exactly the same way Stark does when they witness Frieren's "seduction technique," saying that she would be in danger if Frieren tried that on her, raising a lot of questions. It could either hint at bisexuality with stronger heterosexual preferences or a momentary lapse a la StupidSexyFlanders.
* AngryCheekPuff: Fern tends to puff her cheeks whenever she's pouting or sulking (usually due to something Stark or Frieren did). This comically contrasts with her usually serious, stoic, and mature personality.
* AnimalMotifs: Butterflies. Fern wears a hair ornament Frieren gifted her which has a butterfly on it and her personal rapid-fire version of Zoltraak first takes the shape of butterflies.
* TheApprentice: Fern was at first Heiter's disciple, and then becomes Frieren's apprentice, as she had shown great potential as a mage.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: During the final exam of the first class mage test, [[TheArchmage Serie]] was prepared to fail Fern [[JerkassToOne purely to spite Frieren]], and almost invoked Fern's stunned response to her BattleAura as the excuse just like she failed many others... until she realizes Fern isn't afraid, she's ''analyzing'' Serie's mana and '''sees''' that it's being suppressed. Lernen is the only other human mage to reach this level after Flamme (and even he couldn't tell Serie was suppressing); Serie's opinion of Fern promptly does a 180 to asking her to ''become her apprentice''. She refuses, but Serie is impressed enough to pass her.
* BeamSpam: She's a particularly fast caster, allowing her to spam basic attack magic, to overwhelm enemies. Lügner notes that while he has better control than she does, the sheer overwhelming speed of her attack keeps him from going on the offensive, and because defensive magic is more taxing than offensive magic, it means he cannot hope to just draw this out till she runs out of mana. [[spoiler:He's killed when Linie's death distracts him for just an instant, but it's enough for Fern to pierce his heart]].
* BigEater: She's seen eating more frequently than the rest of the party, and it's usually rather large portions, everything from giant hamburgers to whole loaves of bread to massive platters of donuts. When told what the reward money is for Stark posing as Wirt, in seconds she calculates how many meals and snacks it would buy and excitedly tells Frieren, not even thinking about any of their other possible expenses. Justified in that while on the road she often has to go for months without decent meals, so she indulges when allowed.
* BoobBasedGag: Frieren tries having Fern give her a LapPillow when she wants to lay down in a carriage, but ends up changing her mind because Fern's breasts blocked the view of the sky.
* BoringButPractical: Her strategy in fights is to use simple basic offensive magic, per Freren's orders. However, she is an extremely powerful and fast mage, and said offensive magic is the fastest attack spell there is, and that is enough to overwhelm most enemies.
* BridalCarry: Fern is very aware of the implications whenever someone is carried this way, and pouts when Stark offers to carry an unconscious Frieren in this manner, calling him a pervert for thinking it. An omake illustration in the Volume 11 manga reveals Fern is pleased being the recipient of such a carry, telling Stark she still can't walk and needs to be carried longer. Then again, it could very well be because [[UnresolvedSexualTension Stark]] is the one carrying her.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: Frieren is a bit envious of Fern's well-endowed breasts.
* CharacterTic: She visibly pouts when she's upset and sulking, then sometimes [[DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale lightly hits Stark repeatedly.]]
* ChekhovsSkill: When introduced, Fern is shown to have an unusual capacity to go under the radar of anyone that can detect mana, even someone as well trained as Frieren. This comes in handy when she manages to be stealth support for Stark when they fight Linie and Lügner, the former being a demon with very good mana detecting skills.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Fern is the kind of woman who would not be able to just stand by if an entity is endangering innocent people around her. In Chapter 9, a nearby town is terrorized by a phantom demon that lures in and kills unwitting wanderers. Frieren wanted to avoid an encounter with the demon, while Fern is concerned for the villagers and wants to clear the mountain pass.
-->'''Fern:''' Mistress Frieren, the villagers need your help.\
'''Frieren:''' You sound like [[KnightInShiningArmor Himmel]] now.\
'''Fern:''' [[DeadpanSnarker You see, unlike you, I'm a good girl.]]
* ClingyJealousGirl: She does not like it whenever someone tries to CuddleBug Frieren, and will separate the hugger from her master if the contact lasts for more than a few seconds. To a much lesser extent, she does not like it when Stark has been away for a lengthy period of time and will hunt him down to determine what has stolen his attention.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: By far the least eccentric of her party (usually), and often reins in other members' childishness.
* CombatPragmatist: Fern often resorts to ambushes, making use of the fact that she is extremely difficult to sense by other mages. Since she also has trained in long-ranged shots and thanks to her incredible cast speed, she can oftentimes snipe opponents from a long distance before they can react.
* CommonalityConnection: She often bonds with Stark over their similar experiences, as both have had traumatic first encounters with monsters, are both apprentices to legendary heroes, have been separated from their biological families in their youth and both have to deal with Frieren's TimeDissonance.
* DeadpanSnarker: Amongst the {{cowardly|Lion}} Stark and the [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} eccentric]] Frieren, Fern appears to be the OnlySaneWoman in the group, and she frequently makes snide remarks about them.
* DeathSeeker: As a small child, she was about to jump off a cliff after the death of her parents, but Heiter stopped her and, with some kind words of encouragement, convinced her to live on.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Her typical reaction whenever she gets upset with Stark is to pout and hit him repeatedly. Solely PlayedForLaughs however, as it's clear she's not putting any real force into her blows (looking more like she is lightly tapping rather than hitting), and given [[MadeOfIron how tough Stark is]] it's unlikely she could seriously hurt him with a punch even if she tried.
* FakeWeakness: Is naturally adept at concealing her mana, which causes others to underestimate her power as a mage - even Frieren was initially fooled.
* FamilyOfChoice: For all intents and purposes, Heiter and Frieren are her parents.
* FastestGunInTheWest: A magic variant. She's perhaps the fastest mage in the series in regards to casting time, with even experienced opponents unable to defend properly while they're ''staring right at her'', since they can't even read her preparatory movements and magic build-up. She's equally quick with defensive magic, making sneak attacks very difficult to pull off.
* FormalCharactersUseKeigo: In Japanese, Fern speaks in very formal linguistics at all times and uses the extremely respectful [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics "-sama" honorific]] for everyone, including her closest friends, to convey her straight-laced and ultra-polite nature.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Frieren catches her stowing a pair of cute seed rats in her coat, Fern being too embarrassed to let her master know. She's shown paying attention to animals routinely through the series.
* FriendlySniper: Her ''other'' specialty: ultra-long range snipes from outside a mage's perception range.
* HappilyAdopted: After she lost her parents in a war, she was adopted by Heiter. She was happy in her time as his daughter, and she still sees him as a beloved father figure. She also comes to warm up to Frieren over the years they spend together, with Frieren becoming a mother figure to her.
* HiddenDepths:
** Fern is considerably moodier than she looks, but she's just as kind to boot.
** Albeit Frieren makes most of the decisions in the party, Fern is the one who imparts discipline.
* HimeCut: She has blunt bangs, bra strap-length sidelocks, and waist-length straight hair, and she's a polite girl with a very refined manner of speech.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** Frieren notes that Fern should really not criticize Stark for being a coward, as he has no experience fighting monsters. Fern was much the same and ran away when she encountered her first monster, despite being more than powerful enough. The pair were also hiring Stark to slay a dragon with exceptionally high magic resistance because Fern was too terrified to combat that same dragon with just magic spells. Indeed, while Fern calls Stark "pathetic" for his cowardice, when he's apparently missing, she's shown hugging a tree with Frieren trying to pull her off, putting a display just as "pathetic".
** Fern also keeps calling Stark a pervert, never mind that she checks Stark's junk after learning the XRayVision spell. There's also huge implication that when she carries Frieren through the snowfield, one reason she refuses to hand her over to Stark isn't because she thinks Stark has perverse intentions, but because she wants Frieren all to herself, not helped by Frieren complimenting her smell earlier.
* JerkassToOne: She's generally a NiceGirl, but her behavior towards Frieren falls into JerkWithAHeartOfGold territory. Her impatience with Frieren sometimes makes her rather irritable, but whenever she realizes that it's actually something genuinely important to Frieren she'll instantly stop complaining and help.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: With Stark as said by none other than Sein as he keeps noticing there is obvious love in the air.
* MasterApprenticeChain: Is the latest link in the chain of magic doctrine that originated with Serie and was passed from her to Flamme, then from Flamme to Frieren, and finally from Frieren to Fern.
* MeaningfulName: {{Downplayed}}. Fern in German means distant, aloof, or far(away). Like Frieren, as a war orphan, she is a bit aloof, though not as much as her master.
* MerlinAndNimue: Frieren is an ancient living being, who is at least 1000 years old. Her apprentice, Fern, is a normal human who is still in her teens.
* MetaphoricallyTrue: Much like Frieren, Fern doesn't enjoy (or is good at) lying, so she resorts to this to trick others when necessary.
* MundaneUtility: Like her dear master, Fern subscribes to the utilitarian uses of magic in order to make everyday life easier.
* MundaneWish: [[spoiler:At the end of the First Class Mage Exams, Fern is allowed to learn one spell from Serie, who knows awesome, powerful, and long-lost magic from the dawn of history; things that other mages spend their entire lives preparing to earn to gain immense power, wealth, and clout. Fern instead asks for a clothes-cleaning spell to make laundry a cinch. Both she and Frieren, amusingly, are genuinely proud of the choice, especially since it's a spell from the Mythological Age, while Serie, who wants ambitious, combative mages, can't help but be aghast that one of the most promising practitioners of the era is following in the footsteps of Frieren and Flamme.]]
* NiceGirl:
** Fern is always driven to help people unlike Frieren. She also is very polite and uses formal speech for everyone, probably because she was raised this way by Heiter.
** Fern craves being pampered by both Frieren and Stark, as she expects them to be as pampering towards her as she is to them. However, Frieren is almost always at the receiving end of the equation, while Stark is eager, but muscle-headed to a fault.
* NervesOfSteel: Zigzagged. Fern can keep her emotions in check very well, but even she falters sometimes.
** In Chapter 9, the phantom that takes on the appearance of a beloved person (in her case Heiter) still affects her. While she immediately recognizes that the phantom is a fake and read her memories, she hesitates to shoot it because she misses Heiter.
** In Chapter 10, Frieren and Fern encounter a dragon, who [[AntiMagic proves resistant]] to Fern's magic, forcing them to run away. The still scared Fern refuses to fight the dragon again.
** Chapter 19 is a prime example of how calm and composed Fern stays, even when she is pinned down by Lügner and at his mercy. She doesn't show any pained reaction after being stabbed in the shoulder, nor does she react to his taunt attempts, and she [[DefiantCaptive immediately tries to get her staff back]] the moment he shows his back to her.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Usually she's TheStoic. But she's got a childish streak of her own, whether it's from being with Frieren for most of her life or from her own inherent character, and some moments like the pair finding some creepy old human remains in ruins makes her just as comically spooked as Frieren. She's also not the OnlySaneMan of the party because some of her own ideas of magic and social norms are ''very'' abnormal thanks to her oddball teacher. She may be the more serious of the two, but she's definitely not "normal".
* PrankPunishment: Her normal duties include taking care of Frieren's hair, and she has a specific way of braiding it when she is angry with Frieren. She can do this because Frieren is typically too sleepy to stop her during it. Frieren considers it a puishment, despite the braids looking normal.
-->'''Frieren:''' I'm sorry, okay...? I'm sorry for not eating all the food... stop it...
* PromotedToParent: Played for laughs. When Heiter perished and she began traveling with Frieren, she didn't realize that she basically became her master's caretaker, to the point that Frieren waking up early on her own is a cause for celebration for Fern. She even comes to lament that it's like she's Frieren's mom.
* PsychologicalProjection: She often accuses Stark of being a pervert when all evidence points to her [[CovertPervert having the dirtier mind]] between the two. Case in point, Stark usually has no idea what caused her accusation.
* QuickDraw: Her specialty. The speed she summons her staff from her {{Hammerspace}}, conjures Zoltraak's magic formula, aims, and fires are faster than any other character in the manga, including Frieren.
* StealthExpert: Even Frieren has trouble in Chapter 2 to locate a 9-year-old Fern. Fern was already near undetectable at that age, which is a testament to her talent. She uses this skill in battle, going under the detection of other mages and even demon SensorCharacter Linie.
-->'''Fern:''' So it was hard even for you to find me, Mistress Frieren. Master Heiter also tells me I don't have much of a presence. I believe that's a great thing.
* TheStoic: Like Frieren, Fern emotes very little, usually only showing annoyance at Stark's actions and the occasional disappointment in her master's childishness.
* StupidSexyFlanders: In relation to AmbiguouslyBi above, Fern's reaction to Frieren's "seduction technique" may well be this.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Fern's a taciturn girl who always takes great care of her companions kindly, even though she complains and sulks all the time. For example, she teases Frieren's slovenliness by comparing her own behavior that of a mother, but is jealous when other people (particularly Methode) starts being affectionate and touchy-feely towards Frieren as well.
* SwordAndSorcerer: She has this dynamic with Stark. She's a mage and he's an axe-wielding warrior.
* TeamMom: Despite being the youngest member of the group, she often acts like a responsible motherly figure towards the others, especially Frieren (whom she had to wake up and help get dressed basically every morning) and Stark (whom she often scolds or takes care of when he gets into trouble or acts immature).
* TeenGenius: Frieren immediately notices Fern's talent in magic, and her dedication to honing her skills. What would have taken an average mage ten years, she learned in four. Two years later, she became strong enough to travel with Frieren. First-Class Mage Proctor Sense admits that she's never seen a mage at Fern's age as talented as she is and even Serie is smitten with Fern when she realizes that Fern is the first human who [[spoiler:is able to see the instability in Serie's mana]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Giant hamburgers. She tries to get them at least once every time the party visits a big city.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Stark. She often gives him a disgusted look and gets angry with him, but she cares about him a lot.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: She and Stark start to develop a lot of romantic tension as they travel together, with both seemingly aware of it but afraid to make the first step. Her date with him was the first time she actually cared about her looks much to Stark's surprise.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: She has some of this dynamic with Frieren, who is basically an adoptive mother to her. Fern is very serious and no-nonsense, often acting as a CloudcuckoolandersMinder for the more eccentric and lazy Frieren.
* WeakButSkilled: Downplayed as she is considered very powerful by the standards of human mages, but due to her young age Fern's mana amount does not hold a candle to someone like Frieren. However, Fern is faster than even Frieren in magic casting. Her spells are also refined enough that they pose a serious threat to demons like Lügner.
* WillfullyWeak: [[spoiler:Flamme and Frieren's rule to limit their mana to deceive their opponents was passed on to Fern, though even with her innate talent for it she is not yet capable enough to fool a Great Demon.]]

An extremely powerful young man who hails from a village of warriors. He fled his village following a demon attack and was taken in and trained by Frieren's old companion Eisen. Frieren finds him in a quiet village and encourages him to defeat the dragon that has been terrorizing it; he then joins her party as their frontliner.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: When facing a dangerous threat, Stark is the first person to breakdown and plea for an alternative solution that doesn't involve him getting hurt or going into combat. Ironically he's [[CowardlyLion powerful enough to solo the threat]] he's begging Frieren to eliminate.
* ApologisesALot: To Fern whenever she gets angry at him. He often apologizes without knowing why just to calm her.
* BadassNormal: The only member of the new party with no magical power. He's still ''really'' good in a fight, though.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The reason why he stays with Frieren and Fern as they often comforted him.
* TheBigGuy: Stark serves as the party's frontline who protects the mages in the backline.
* BlackSheep: He was an outcast in the village he was born in due to being weak and cowardly, especially when compared with his brother who was the strongest warrior in the village. He was seen as TheUnfavorite by his father, and nobody seemed to care for him outside of his older brother.
* BrutishCharacterBrutishWeapon: He's the [[TheBigGuy physically strongest member of Frieren's party]], powerful enough to singlehandedly defeat a dragon, and his weapon is a large axe.
* ButtMonkey: Many gags in the series tend to come at his expense, with him usually ending up looking like a fool and needing Frieren or Fern to help him out.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Though he has no talent for magic, he is incredibly strong. He can solo kill a dragon TheArchmage and her prodigy apprentice found difficult to battle, and a single swing from his axe can cleave a canyon through a cliff. His fastest technique executes at the speed of lightning. His musculature is resilient enough to halt blade strikes if the attack isn't performed by an equally strong opponent, and he doesn't lose consciousness from grievous wounds. While all of this can be chalked up to his training with Eisen, Eisen himself remarks to Frieren that Stark's true potential is so great that he instinctively felt fear when they got into an argument.
* CleansUpNicely: While not ugly by any means, Stark still comes off as a rather gruff individual at a glace with messy hair, scars, and arms wrapped in bandages, as befitting a traveling warrior. That said, he looks positively dashing when having to pose as a nobleman's son for a fancy ball, something [[UnresolvedSexualTension Fern]] seems to take notice of.
* CommonalityConnection: He often bonds with Fern over their similar experiences, as both have had traumatic first encounters with monsters, are both apprentices to legendary heroes, have been separated from their biological families in their youth and both have to deal with Frieren's TimeDissonance.
* CowardlyLion: Despite having a massive natural power, Stark lacks conviction and has a hard time fighting monsters because he's scared of them. Curiously, it's this fear that makes him persist.
* DaddyIssues: The poor guy can't catch a break. He was downright ignored by his father and although Eisen was a much better father figure, their relationship ended poorly when Eisen punched him so hard that it left a scar. Ironically, Stark keeps loving Eisen.
* {{Determinator}}: Stark will never permanently go down in a fight as long as he has a HeroicResolve to protect the people around him. In Chapter 20, despite going down against Linie multiple times, he gets up every time.
* DistinguishingMark: Stark has a major scar on his face. The wound was inflicted by Eisen. Stark believes he was hit because Eisen got fed up with his cowardice. In truth, Eisen was subconsciously scared of Stark's inherent power and hit him on reflex.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: Downplayed as he's never accidentally injured someone, but Stark underestimates his strength on and off the battlefield. As a prank he once grabbed Fern's shoulder with cold hands, but did so with such speed and grip, she was briefly afraid of him when it happened.
* FaceOfAThug: Fern notes in Chapter 12 that he has a really evil-looking face. In the same chapter, Stark makes use of his scarred face to intimidate people into giving him information.
* FakeUltimateHero: Subverted. Stark is hailed by the village he protects as a hero, who scared away a dragon and whose presence prevents the dragon from attacking the village. As it turns out, he is an inexperienced coward who was too scared to move until the dragon eventually flew away. However, he actually ''is'' [[CowardlyLion unbelievably strong]] and the dragon realized this, which is why it ran away in the first place.
* FearIsTheAppropriateResponse: When Frieren asked Eisen if Stark was a capable warrior, Eisen called him a coward that was the only one to run away when his village was attacked... which is why he decided to take him as a disciple: Everyone else in the village died, so Stark staying there would have only resulted in his own death as well.
* FriendToAllChildren: He tends to get along with children, due to him being a kid at heart and the kids tend to look up to him due to his strength.
* GravityIsAHarshMistress: Stark is only damaged from a fall if he is actively aware of the height. When battling an opponent who throws him into the air, he lands without injury after executing attacks that accelerate his plummeting rate for damage momentum.
* HandwrapsOfAwesome: Stark's arms are bandaged, which makes sense, as he is the physical fighter of the group and swings a large battle-ax around.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: His childhood has put a major dent in his confidence, as he was constantly compared to his extremely talented elder brother. He knows he's a coward and feels guilty that he fled when his village was attacked, leaving even his big brother, the only person who cared about him, behind. Fern thinks what's in the past is in the past, and that [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre the man she has seen has never fled]].
* HiddenDepths: While being a hard-raised warrior who's thus completely at a loss in those particular struggles, he takes special consideration towards being affectionate towards Fern, with many hiccups in between.
* IdenticalStranger: He's the spitting image of Wirth, a recently deceased young knight. Wirth's father Orden mentions that they're descended from the same Warrior village as Stark, which was likely why they look so similar.
* InsignificantAnniversary: While Stark doesn't care at all about his birthday (since his family never did), it is important for the girls which moves him.
* KillingIntent: Stark has such a massive reserve of power, he seems unaware of the fact that he uses this when he is completely terrified. The dragon he ran off from the village was actually afraid of him and ran away when feeling just how powerful its opponent was, and the reason Eisen punched him is because he instinctively perceived his student as a monster and acted on impulse.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: With Fern as said by none other than Sein as he keeps noticing there is obvious love in the air.
* LightningBruiser: Stark is not only physically strong and fast, but he also is MadeOfIron. No matter how often he goes down, he always gets up. In Chapter 20, he directly takes an ax to his ribs from a demon who copied his master's technique without even flinching and calling her weak.
* MadeOfIron: He can take a truly insane amount of punishment, even by normal Warrior standards. He's just a human, who doesn't practice magic, so it's not SuperToughness.
** Eisen punched him ''in the head'' right through the wall of his house and all he got was a scar on his face.
** During his fight with Linie Stark gets the stuffing beat out of him several times but just keeps getting back up, and ends up taking a full-force swing of her battle-ax to his unguarded side. It goes maybe two inches at most and stops. Keep in mind Linie is a demon with SuperStrength (albeit, as lampshaded by Stark, she is much weaker than Eisen).
** A RunningGag when fighting groups of large monsters is Stark getting grabbed in their jaws and partially gulped down. He's always mostly fine afterwards, and has no answer when asked how he is okay.
* ManChild: Despite being the same age as Fern, he is considerably more childish.
* MeaningfulName: His name means "strong" in German and, despite his cowardice, he is a very powerful warrior.
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Completely overreacts to Fern's angry tantrum poundings of him, even though he shouldn't even feel them to begin with.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: He's much stronger than his average build suggests he is.
* NiceGuy: He's a very earnest person who enjoys helping out people without expecting anything back.
* TheOneGuy: Although Sein is technically the other male member of Frieren's party, he gets separated from the group for a good portion of the story and Stark ends up as the only male in the party for most of the journey.
* OnlyAFleshWound: Overlapping with MajorInjuryUnderreaction. Stark can take the punishment equivalent to someone with the defensive role of a tank, but he's a relentless attacker. Be it axe blows to the chest, the young man goes through the grinder while never losing his footing. He can even be bleeding profusely, only to state that this is normal for him. He's proverbially a wall.
* OnlySaneMan: While not as often as Fern, there are moments where Stark winds up being the most rational and grounded individual of the group, partly due to being a warrior in the company of two powerful mages.
* OutOfFocus: During the First-Class Mage Exam, a TournamentArc focusing on Fern and Frieren trying to heighten their rank, he is nowhere to be seen, and a cover implies he's just been hanging out in the town waiting for them.
* PrankDate: The date he invites Fern was originally "revenge" but he takes it seriously the second Fern takes it seriously.
* RaisedByDudes: For his entire childhood, he was raised by tough and manly warriors. A lot of his conflicts with Fern come from him not knowing how to handle interactions with a girl of his age.
* RedIsHeroic: Stark is clad in red clothes, has red hair, and is a very heroic figure even if held back by his fear of monsters at the start.
* ReplacementGoldfish: When he is hired to play the part of the son of a noble who must hide that said son is dead, he is offered to stay in the castle to keep playing the role, but he refuses on the grounds that he doesn't want to become this. The castle's lord agrees since he also wouldn't like to become this for Stark's father.
* RookieRedRanger: Stark is physically strong enough to take down a dragon with one hit. Yet, he has absolutely no live experience in fighting monsters, which is why he lacks resolve and would rather run away and ask for help than fight someone. He also is still very naive, as he initially believes that humans can negotiate peace with demons.
* TeenyWeenie: When Fern uses an XRayVision spell and looks at his crotch, she comments that he's "small", which he vehemently denies. It's possible she was just messing with him.
* SignatureMove: Lightning Strike, which Eisen taught him. It's a fast and strong overhead cleaving strike. Stark is seen in his introductory chapters practicing it when Fern tries to convince him to join Frieren's party and he regularly uses Lightning Strike to finish off his opponents.
* TheSoCalledCoward: Just like his master Eisen, Stark operates in the face of his own fear. As such, he pushes himself to achieve such strength as to render said fear inoffensive. Lash with enough ape power and dexterity, and just about every fear can be conquered.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: A hamburg steak. He has fond memories of this since Eisen (and as he later remembers, his brother) always made one for him on his birthdays. Frieren also tells him that Eisen made these for warriors doing their best, and that he considers anyone doing their best to be a warrior, which probably helps.
* SwordAndSorcerer: He has this dynamic with Fern. He's an axe-wielding warrior and she's a mage.
* TheUnfavourite: Stark received ParentalNeglect because he wasn't as good of a warrior as his elder brother, Stoltz. His father outright called him a reject.
* UnprovokedPervertPayback: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. It's a RunningGag for him to do actions that Fern considers to be perverted when he's actually being earnest, such as offering to carry a sleeping Frieren. She never gets physical, but tends to give him a DeathGlare or treat him harshly, much to his confusion.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: He and Fern start to develop a lot of romantic tension as they travel together, with both seemingly aware of it but afraid to make the first step. Stark was so nervous about dating her that he asks for advices from Frieren.
* TheWatson: As the only one who doesn't cast magic, Stark often asks for details on various spells and methods he's unfamiliar with, allowing Frieren to explain things for his convenience, as well as the audience's.

A talented but apathetic priest Frieren's party encounters near a village in the Northern Countries. He refuses Frieren's offer to join them initially, because he feels obligated to stay by his brother's side and because he promised his friend to wait for him and then go adventuring with him together. Frieren and his big brother eventually manage to convince him to come with them so that he can find his friend.
----
* AdaptationalCurves: He's more physically toned in the anime compared to the manga, as seen when he's sitting half-naked after losing in gambling against his town's mayor.
* AntiMagic: Being blessed with the Goddess' magic, Sein shows strong resistances to curses and he can also use DispelMagic to cancel the effects of strong curses temporarily.
* BigBrotherWorship: He loves his big brother, who is the local priest of the village. As his brother once refused Heiter's offer to come to the Holy City for the sake of Sein, so does Sein refuse to go with anyone who asks him to go on an adventure because he doesn't want to leave his big brother.
* TheConfidant: He acts this way towards Fern and her relationship troubles with Stark. Due to being raised by Heiter, Fern has a lot of respect for priests and sees how similar Sein is to Heiter, which is why she quickly trusts him and asks for advice.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It's [[MyGreatestFailure his biggest regret]]. His apathy stems from the fact that he [[RefusalOfTheCall refused to go on an adventure]] with his {{Childhood Friend|s}}, who promised to come back three years later and never came back, which means that he's likely dead.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The foolish one compared to his big brother. Sein has many vices and is rather apathetic, his brother on the other hand is a very serious and responsible man.
* TheGamblingAddict: Right in his introductory chapter, he is shown gambling off all his possessions except for his underwear.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Sein joins Frieren's party to find his BestFriend Gorilla. Should their paths no longer align, he would leave the party to go his own way. [[spoiler:This happens in Chapter 35.]]
* HonoraryTrueCompanion: He has to part ways with Frieren's party to look for his missing friend, but it would seem that Frieren is adamant about having Sein as her party healer, since she implies on more than one occasion that she has one spot in the group reserved.
* IWillWaitForYou:
** Platonic version. One of the reasons he doesn't want to leave the village is because he wants to wait for his friend, who promised to return one day and ask Sein again to come with him for an adventure. Ten years have passed since then and his friend is likely dead, so Sein is resigned to stay in his village. Frieren persuades him to go with her to find his friend.
** When a talented young mage woman offers to join Frieren's party, she politely refuses, as the privilege is reserved for Sein alone.
* LikesOlderWomen: The entire reason he apparently wanted to become an adventurer as a kid was so he could hook up with older women. He likes ''mature'' women, not just women who are older than him, though, which is why Frieren's attempt to seduce him doesn't work.
* MeaningfulName: In German "sein" means "to be" or "being/existence".
* TheMedic: He acts as the party healer due to his natural talent for the Goddess' magic.
* MrViceGuy: Sein is a good-natured priest, but still corrupt in his own way. Among the things he likes is [[TheAlcoholic drinking]], smoking, [[TheGamblingAddict gambling]], and [[LikesOlderWomen older women]].
* NotSoSimilar: He believes to be similar to his brother, in the sense that both of them sacrificed their opportunities and goals for each other: Much like his brother sacrificed a higher position in the church to let his brother stay on his home village, Sein sacrificed his dream of becoming an adventurer to not let his brother be alone. His brother is furious at this comparison, because unlike Sein, who unnecessarily resigned himself to unfulfillment and regret in a sacrifice he was never asked to do, his brother never regretted his lot in life and did what he did out of a selfless desire to raise his brother in the best environment for him.
* ShipperOnDeck: Sein sees the UnresolvedSexualTension between Fern and Stark, and at some point gets tired of playing the relationship counselor, frustratingly yelling that they should just get together already.
* SiblingYinYang: His big brother [[IRegretNothing never regretted]] staying in a rural village for the sake of his little brother, while Sein is living a life full of regrets. A slap from his angry brother (who [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness never raised his hand before]]) is what finally convinces Sein to go with Frieren.
* TheSocialExpert: Sein is very capable in dealing with people and is more insightful about the relationship between his party members than any other. For instance, he quickly knows what would be the ideal birthday gift for Fern (which she notices is a sign he is experienced with women) and instantly understands why she is mad at Stark. Without knowing her past, Sein figures out that she must have been raised by someone who resembles him, which is why she comes to him for advice instead of Frieren.
* TeamDad: As the only human adult in the team, Sein is more mature and savvy about relationships than anyone on the team. Fern and Stark often go to him for advice and rely on him to act as a mediator whenever they have an argument.
* TookALevelInCynic: Initially a CheerfulChild who once wanted to become an adventurer, he gave up on his dream to stay with his brother, but his BestFriend nonetheless asked him once to accompany him. Sein refused, and his friend promised to return three years later. When Frieren arrives in his village, ten years have already passed, which means it's likely that his friend passed away.
* WhiteMage: Sein is a very talented priest who has HealingHands. He demonstrates his skill in Chapter 27, when he instantly heals Stark from a poison that his big brother, who is supposedly the best priest in the region, deemed incurable.

The legendary group of adventurers, consisting of the human hero Himmel, dwarven warrior Eisen, human priest Heiter, and elven mage Frieren, who defeated the Demon King after a ten-year-long journey.\

The party was dissolved after they returned to the capital, though they reunited fifty years later for one final adventure to see the Era Meteors together.
----
* BadassCrew: Every member of the party was a monster. Frieren is one of the most powerful mages in the series, Eisen was humanity's strongest warrior, Heiter's magic and devotion to the Goddess was so great that [[spoiler:even a Sage of Destruction's curse couldn't affect him]] and Himmel was so feared that many demons only dared to show themselves again after he passed away.
* DamagerHealerTank: Frieren was the damager of the party, Heiter the healer, and Eisen the tank. As a swordfighter, Himmel was also at the front line.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: They had ten years of adventures and defeated the Demon King. However, the current story follows only Frieren's new journey, with her old teammates mainly appearing in brief flashbacks.
* LivingLegend: All four survived the adventure and made it safely back to the capital, where they were hailed as heroes. In the present day, only Frieren and Eisen are still alive, Himmel and Heiter both passing away due to old age.
* ParentalAbandonment: Heiter, Frieren, and Eisen lost their family to demons. Himmel also grew up in the same orphanage as Heiter.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The party that saved the world and defeated the Demon King consisted of an anti-social elven mage, an alcoholic priest, a somewhat narcissistic hero, and a grumpy dwarf. The latter two almost even got executed by the king because they were very rude.
* TrueCompanions: The party spent 10 years together adventuring and facing great challenges together, getting to know one another and fighting together made them a really close-knit group of friends that really care for each other as friends. Even years later, all of them are still friends that readily help when one of them needs, like Frieren caring for Heiter in his twilight years and Eisen wanting Frieren to get to Himmel one last time by helping her obtain Flamme's notes and telling her where to find his pupil. At one point, Stark points out that, despite being LongLived himself, Eisen treasures the 10 years he spent adventuring with his friends more than any other period of his life.
%%* VitriolicBestBuds: They often fought during their travels for various reasons but they were still very close with one another.

\
The legendary hero that led Frieren's party into fighting the Demon King. He passes away about fifty years after their adventure, which prompts a mourning Frieren to begin learning about humans.
----
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: When he was a kid, he got lost in a forest and Frieren helped him find his way back to civilization. He asked her to join his party to return the favor.
* BlueIsHeroic: Himmel had blue hair and wore blue clothes mostly. The color emphasizes [[HeavenlyBlue his kind heart]], and his connection to heaven.
* CannotSpitItOut: While he is visibly smitten with Frieren, he never gets the chance to tell her. The few times when she is willing to listen, he intentionally brushes the matter aside.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Heiter. They both grew up in the same orphanage and have been close friends ever since.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: He could never turn his back on people who needed his help.
* ColorMotif: Himmel is heavily associated with the color blue. Not only was his entire outfit and hair blue, his name means "[[HeavenlyBlue sky/heaven]]" and his favorite flower was blue as well.
* CoolOldGuy: Even a few years before his death, he's more than strong enough to constantly travel around and slaying dangerous monsters which squads of soldiers had difficulty in dealing with, much less ''[[OneHitKill one-shotting]]'' them with ease.
* ContagiousHeroism: His heroic, kind-hearted nature would influence the other party members into becoming more heroic versions of themselves. Heiter even says his reason to save Fern was partly due to the fact that that's what Himmel would have done if he was still alive.
* CovertPervert: He gets mad at a DirtyKid for flipping Frieren's skirt, not for her sake, but because the kid "saw what he wanted to see for so long".
* TheDefroster: It was his influence and friendship which caused the originally aloof Frieren to eventually open up to emotions and seek to form meaningful relationships with humans.
* {{Determinator}}:
** One of Himmel's greatest traits was his resolve. It didn't matter whether [[spoiler:he was unable to pull out the Hero's Sword]] or [[spoiler:if he is put in a LotusEaterMachine that shows him his impossible dream to marry Frieren]], nothing could stop him from defeating the Demon King and bringing peace to the world.
** More humorously, he resisted the urge to peak under Frieren's skirt for years, despite ''really'' wanting to, because "(he) has self-control".
* DramaticIrony: Breaks out of Grausam's illusion of marrying Frieren because he long accepted that the love of his life would never return his feelings, and gives it up believing he was trapped there with his fellow adventurer. What he didn't know was that she was partially inhabited by a Frieren from the future who did realize that she loved him.
* FriendToAllChildren: He was very good with children.
* FunPersonified: His easygoing, positive leadership made their adventure a fun journey. This is why Eisen still fondly remembers the time he spent with his comrades.
-->'''Himmel:''' As for me... I want this journey to be one we can look back on and laugh at how silly it was in the end.
* TheHeart: His magnetic heroism is what glued the Hero's Party together, and he had a deep emotional influence on all its members, changing them for the better even after his death.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Himmel was the one in the party who wielded a sword, while Eisen wielded an axe and Frieren had her staff. Himmel's sword is said to be a legendary sword, only given to TheChosenOne, [[spoiler:though as it turns out Himmel couldn't pull that legendary sword out of the stone either. He nonetheless strived to be the hero the people needed]].
* HiddenDepths: Himmel is well-acquainted with the language of flowers. He requested to have a specific type of flower put at his statues, and he understood right away what the lotus on the ring Frieren wanted to buy meant. His wish to build statues of the Hero Party to not let people forget about him or his friends was also done so that Frieren wouldn't feel so lonely after he passed away.
* HopelessSuitor: It's heavily implied he had feelings for Frieren, who was both oblivious and too emotionally dissociated from mortals to reciprocate.
* IdealHero: Himmel was a very honorable man, who was still concerned about the commonfolk and visited every year the village where Qual was sealed to check the condition of the seal. He also strongly believed in diplomacy and that sentient, talking creatures can live in peace. He took it back regarding demons, after seeing that demonkind and mankind are completely incompatible.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: It's ambiguous whether Himmel and Frieren were in love with each other and simply never acted upon their feelings, or if they truly were just friends who cared deeply about each other.
* IWasQuiteALooker: He was a classic PrettyBoy in his youth. As an old man, he turned [[MiniatureSeniorCitizen short]], stooped and bald.
* KnightErrant: Himmel often took several detours because he helped out anyone who needed him. Whether it was defeating a dangerous monster, escorting a merchant or even just carrying the luggage for someone, he was always ready to help. Frieren in the present continues doing this.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Himmel was a very honorable, compassionate, and brave man who was devoted to helping the people. He also seemingly became the archetypal shining knight within the continent because of him successfully defeating the Demon King.
* LasciviousBeautyMark: He has a beauty mark underneath his left eye, which fits with him being a [[TheCharmer charismatic]] PrettyBoy with a [[ProudBeauty borderline narcissist obsession with his appearance]].
* LightningBruiser: Despite wielding a heavy, broad longsword [[spoiler:(which is actually an inferior replica)]], he can FlashStep all over the place, cutting his opponents to bits before they even realize what's going on. This, combined with the swordsmanship and fighting ability he's honed since he was a kid killing monsters, makes him undoubtedly the foremost fighter of his generation.
* TheLostLenore: The romantic aspect of his relationship with Frieren is [[ImpliedLoveInterest up to interpretation]], but regardless, Himmel fulfills this role in Frieren's story, as she still thinks about him thirty years after his passing, and even when facing a demon that shows your most beloved person, the demon shows her Himmel. After finding Eisen, Frieren's quest even becomes to try to get to the spirit realm to talk with him once more.
* MasterSwordsman: He has been naturally gifted with a sword since he was a child, and that skill only grew with age to the point he became a famous demon slayer using only a regular sword replica.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: He had romantic feelings for Frieren, who is so LongLived that the ten years they spent together felt like a short time to her. It's unknown whether it was one-sided or Frieren did reciprocate, but never realized her own feelings. [[spoiler:Chapter 117 shows that Grausam's illusion has him about to get married to Frieren and Grausam comments it was a dream Himmel had already given up on.]]
* MeaningfulName: His name means "[[StellarName sky]]" or "heaven" in German, fitting his blue-themed design. He also dies after the first chapter, and Frieren and her party are on the way to Aureole, the place where souls rest, also known as heaven.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizen: In his old age, Himmel went from a rather tall man to a senior even smaller than the already short Frieren.
* MoralityPet: To Frieren. She was completely isolated and detached from people until Himmel made her go on a journey with him. The things she learned from him in life continue to guide her in the present, and his death taught her to value time more than she did before.
* NiceGuy: He was a kindhearted, caring and idealistic guy.
* OldMaster: Even as a short old man long past his prime, he was still a capable warrior. A soldier travelling to the Goddess' monument recalls to Frieren and co. about encountering Himmel and a freshly-killed demon.
* TheParagon: Despite not being the hero that could pull out the Hero's Sword, Himmel's influence encouraged many others to become heroes themselves.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: His death makes Frieren realize how ephemeral human life is, how little time she spent with him, and set off on a journey to try to understand humans better.
* PosthumousCharacter: He dies in the first chapter. His character and relationship with Frieren as well as his impact overall is mainly explored through {{flashback}}s.
* PresentAbsence: The story starts with Himmel dying of old age, but Frieren makes him her main motivation to set in new journey and remembers him almost every chapter.
* ProudBeauty: Himmel was aware that he was a good-looking man, and was quite proud of it. Whenever people wanted to make statues of him as gratitude for him saving them, it seemed to be a recurring occurrence that he'd be very over the top with the way he was portrayed so he could look good. Notably, he still had these tendencies as an old man.
* SuperSenses: As shown in Chapter 118, [[spoiler:despite being impaired by Grausam's mental magic, Himmel's senses are so sharp, he still can track Grausam and, with some help from Heiter, cuts off Grausam's arm and forces him and Solitär to retreat]].
* TimePassageBeard: After fifty years, all the hair on his scalp seemed to have moved down, giving him an impressive mustache and beard as an old man.
* TheUnchosenOne: [[spoiler:He actually failed to pull out the Hero's Sword from the stone, signifying that he wasn't the hero of legends, but that didn't stop him from defeating the demon king. This is because the prophecy foretold the Hero's Sword would be used against an ultimate evil who sought to destroy the world. Though the demon king was responsible for a level of death and destruction never known prior, in truth he did not seek to destroy the world and truly desired understanding between humanity and demonkind. Unfortunately, the mortal dissonance between demons and humans would result in human extinction before such a breakthrough would ever occur. Yet terrifying as he was, the demon king was not the prophesied threat.]]
* UnrequitedLoveLastsForever: Himmel was in love with Frieren, who couldn't understand nor reciprocate his feelings due to how emotionally stunted she was at the time, and he never married because he was pining after her until he died from old age. Frieren ''may'' have reciprocated his feelings to some extent, but she still hasn't realized it even decades after his death.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: His blue eyes have a notable sheen on them, and they're the only part of his good looks that remain unchanged even when he turns into a MiniatureSeniorCitizen.

The alcohol-loving priest of the Hero Party. After the Demon King's defeat, he returned to the Holy City and eventually became a bishop.\

In his last remaining years, he took in and raised a war orphan he found, Fern. When Frieren came to visit him 20 years after Himmel's death, he asked Frieren to adopt Fern and train her.
----
* TheAlcoholic: Heiter is known as a drunkard, which is why Frieren calls him "Corrupt Priest". He eventually stops in his old age, as he realizes that his body can't take it anymore, and he wants to prolong the time he has with Fern.
* AntiMagic: As a devout priest, his resistance to curses is exceptional. As demonstrated in Chapter 118, [[spoiler:he managed to resist Grausam the Miraculous' illusion magic, something that has never happened up until this point]].
* BadassPreacher: He's a priest (and later a bishop) with a large mana pool and ample skill with [[WhiteMagic Goddess magic]], which he used to slay several demons during his adventuring days.
* TheChessmaster: He has what can only be called "generational planning"; he was VitriolicBestBuds with Frieren, but he also realized that she will be the one to outlive them all by centuries, thus making her the only constant in the changing world. So, knowing Frieren doesn't make friends easily and to prevent every other priest having a hard time getting to work with her, he ensures Frieren will take his adopted daughter Fern as an apprentice while he trains his own apprentice priests (including Sein) in a way they won't have to suffer through same frustrations that he had suffered if they ever meet and should work with Frieren, thus also ensuring she has at least two companions she can trust and who can trust her fifty years later and decades after his death. It is implied Eisen (Heiter's best friend after Himmel) did the same thing with Stark thanks to Heiter's request.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Himmel. They both grew up in the same orphanage and have been close friends ever since.
* CombatMedic: His Goddess magic has both offensive and support capabilities, and he's skilled with both.
* GoodShepherd: Frieren likes calling him "corrupt priest" because of his drunkness, but he totally fits the image of the devout-man-of-faith. In his youth, he defended the land against demons, and old age only made him wiser and kinder. He persuades the young and grief-stricken Fern out of committing suicide through sheer compassion, and then arranges for someone to continue taking care of her after his death.
* ImmortalitySeeker: {{Subverted|Trope}}. He asks Frieren to help him translate a book that might have the secret to let him live forever or be resurrected, though he is fine with just having more time on earth. However, it's later revealed this was just a ploy to keep her around and have her train Fern until she could protect herself when he was gone, and subsequently, have Frieren take her under her wing when he's dead.
* LastRequest: Asks Frieren to take Fern as her disciple after he passes away. Frieren declines at first because Fern would only be a burden, but thanks to Heiter tricking Frieren into teaching Fern while she stayed with them until Heiter passed away, she could no longer refuse his request.
* ManipulativeBastard: Frieren refused to take Fern with her because she'd be a burden, so Heiter asks her to at least train Fern while she is translating a book. Over the course of four years, Frieren becomes Fern's mentor and trains her in magic. By the time the training is over, Fern is good enough that Frieren has no excuse to not take her with her, and she realizes [[BatmanGambit this was his plan all along]].
* TheMedic: As a priest, he's adept in Goddess's Magic which specializes in healing, making him the dedicated healer of the party. It's also likely why he lived so long despite being a normal human and an alcoholic.
* MeaningfulName: Heiter can mean bright, cheerful, or merry/slightly drunk in German, which fits a priest who is known for being TheAlcoholic.
* MrViceGuy: He's a very powerful priest and a genuinely heroic person who helped save the world, but also has his share of vices, most notable TheAlcoholic. The party constantly pokes fun at him for it.
* ParentalSubstitute: Heiter was a good father figure to Fern. She became strong so he would not have to worry about her anymore and could pass away in peace, and to this day she still misses him.
* PickyEater: Heiter didn't like vegetables at all and regularly passed them to his comrades. Unfortunately, he seems to have passed on his dislike to his adoptive daughter, Fern.
* PosthumousCharacter: Like Himmel, he dies from old age early in the story, but still regularly shows up in {{flashback}}s.
* StepfordSmiler: Frieren notes that it seemed like he was NotAfraidToDie, but he admits that was [[BeneathTheMask a mask he wore]] beneath his smiling appearance to show off. In his final days, he wished for Fern to be strong enough so that he could pass in peace without regret.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Decades of being TheAlcoholic forced him to quit drinking in his elder years because his aging body could no longer handle it anymore.
* VitriolicBestBuds: He has this relationship with Frieren. She constantly calls him a corrupt priest for his love of drinking, but that just rolls off his back. As seen in his final years where she lived with him, the two really do deeply care about each other.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Heiter felt his approaching death a long time ago. Since he didn't have much time left to protect or train Fern, he gladly welcomed Frieren when she came to visit him.

A dwarven warrior that was part of Himmel's party. Dwarves live on average for three hundred years, so Eisen is still alive in the present day. However, he has aged to the point that he can no longer go on long journeys. In his old age, he took Stark as his pupil.
----
* AllEncompassingMantle: He wears a red cloak that covers his whole body.
* TheBigGuy: He's the party frontline warrior and is the physically strongest member, being so strong that he's confident he could crush diamonds with his bare hands, and has enough physical accomplishments that this is fairly believable.
* BrutishCharacterBrutishWeapon: He's a brutish, rough, stoic and physically oriented warrior who wields a large battle-axe in combat.
* CowardlyLion: He admitted to Frieren that he was always scared in battle. He doesn't think fear is a bad thing, though, quite the opposite. This is a belief that would eventually pass on to his pupil Stark.
* {{Determinator}}: His philosophy in battle is that [[VictoryByEndurance the one left standing is the winner]]. He doesn't think he is the strongest warrior of humanity and admits he is a coward at heart, but everyone who was stronger than him is dead because they were {{Fearless Fool}}s.
* TheEeyore: In a [[RagtagBunchOfMisfits group full of weirdos]], Eisen appeared to be the OnlySaneMan in the Hero Party. However, he changed his outlook for the journey when Himmel asked him [[ArmorPiercingQuestion whether he wants their journey to be painful and bitter then]]. In retrospect, while Eisen found their journey to be ridiculous, he still had a lot of fun and looks back on it as the most precious time of his long life.
* FasterThanTheyLook: In contrast to his dwarven appearance, he's fast enough to run ''across water''.
* HiddenDepths: He may look very stoic and harsh, but he has a soft heart and greatly values his friends. Stark tells Frieren that Eisen's mood was at its highest when he talked about his adventuring days.
* LightningBruiser: Just like Stark, Eisen was not only extremely powerful, he was fast and durable. In Chapter 30, Frieren thinks that Stark can easily survive a fall from dozens of meters because Eisen could. Chapter 111 also showcases that ordinary physical attacks from monsters did nothing to hurt him.
* LongLived: As a dwarf, he lives much longer than his human companions and is still alive, if old and retired by the time frame the story takes place in. Presuming he has had a normal dwarven lifespan, he's around three hundred at this point, nearing the end albeit not on his deathbed yet.
* MadeOfIron: He served as the Tank of the party, being a heavily-armored dwarf that could withstand blows from some of the strongest demons who ever lived. In one scene an attempt to impale him with spears causes the spear heads to ''shatter,'' and in another he hits the ground so hard from a fall that he makes a crater but stands up like nothing happened (Frieren remarking he was never injured from a fall, no matter how high he fell from). That Rivale is able to wound him is a clear sign of how powerful the demon warrior is.
* MeaningfulName: Eisen is German for iron, a very fitting name for a dwarven warrior. He also seems to be MadeOfIron.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: He's drawn in a much more cartoony manner than the rest of his party, with big round eyes and his whole face covered in a thick mop of hair like [[Franchise/TheAddamsFamily Cousin It]].
* OurDwarvesAreAllTheSame: PlayedWith. Eisen looks like a stereotypical dwarf. He is a small, axe-wielding warrior with a [[HornyVikings horned helmet]] and a thick beard, who served as TheBigGuy of the party. He does seem to get along with an elf like Frieren, though. Also unlike the stereotypical dwarf, he isn't boisterous and not a particularly big drinker. Those two traits were instead given to Himmel and Heiter respectively.
* ParentalSubstitute: Eisen served as the master and a positive father figure for Stark.
* PassingTheTorch: Stark fills up his former position as the vanguard in Frieren's current party, as he has become too old to accompany her.
* RetiredBadass: Eisen is now too old to go adventuring, but he was a member of the party that took down the demon king and is a good enough teacher to mentor Stark into greatness.
* SignatureMove: Lightning Strike. It's a fast and strong overhead cleaving strike. He passed this move on to Stark.
* TheStoic: He has a taciturn demeanor and doesn't emote much. The fact his face is mostly covered by his beard helps to make him look emotionless.
* StrokeTheBeard: As a CharacterTic, he often strokes his beard when contemplating something or is deep in thought.
* WorldsBestWarrior: Hailed as the mightiest warrior after helping defeat the Demon King.

A graf (count) and current ruler of his family's domain, stuck in a war against Aura.
----
* ExcellentJudgeOfCharacter: He doesn't trust Lügner or Aura one bit, and actually accepted any "peace talks" simply so he could kill the demons that are responsible for his son's death. However, even he is affected when Lügner claims he empathizes with Granat and that he is genuinely interested in negotiations.
* FantasticRacism: He hates demons with a passion, as demons [[YouKilledMyFather are responsible for his son's death]].
* HyperAwareness: Granat pays great attention to detail, which makes him a very capable leader. It doesn't take him long to see the holes in Lügner's lies or the fact that Frieren is a powerful yet law-abiding adventurer.
* YouKilledMyFather: Inverted. Graf Granat has [[OutlivingOnesOffspring outlived his son]] because Aura killed him. This is why he has no intention to ever trust demons, let alone find a peaceful solution.

A male elf that Frieren's group meets in a cabin in the mountains. He's a monk and believed himself to be the last elf alive until meeting Frieren.
----
* BareFistedMonk: He’s very strong with only his fists while also being a devout elf.
* {{Foil}}: As the second elf seen in the series, he serves as a very notable one for Frieren. He's a tall male elf and looks somewhat aged whereas Frieren is female and looks like a teenager. He is a monk who fights with his fists while Frieren is a mage who fights at range. Kraft is more outwardly emotional where Frieren is more subdued. And lastly, while both have been on adventures that made them famous across the land, Kraft's story has long since been mostly forgotten as numerous generations have come and gone since then, while Frieren's story is still fresh in the minds of the public and still has living firsthand witnesses.
* HeavenSeeker: He was in his youth skeptical of the goddess's existence, but eventually became a devout believer of the goddess due to his sadness at the idea that after all the suffering one goes through in life, there's nothing to come after, and that everyone who knew of his deeds is gone. He chooses to believe that there must be ''something'' waiting after death, that the goddess will know his life and praise him.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Outright states that he once went on famous journeys long before even Frieren's time, but almost all knowledge of Kraft and his adventures has been lost to time (there are stone statues of him, and it is known the statues are of heroes who saved the world, but no details are remembered). He offers to swap stories with Frieren before they part, but she ultimately declines.
* LivingLegend: It's implied (later confirmed) that he has done many feats in his long life and was once a great Warrior hero, though [[TheGreatestStoryNeverTold anyone who could remember this is long dead]].
* LongLived: As typical of elves, but it's implied that he is ''particularly'' old, even compared to Frieren.
* MeaningfulName: Kraft is German for virtue, power, force, strength, etc.
* MrFanservice: He's a handsome elf with a muscular body, and is introduced [[WalkingShirtlessScene shirtless]]. Indeed, his introduction is a WorkoutFanservice scene, doing squats in his cabin, and looking quite good doing it.
* NiceGuy: All in all a very pleasant individual and one of the kindest, warmest people you could hope to meet. This is in stark contrast to Frieren, who is much more muted with her emotions and can come off as cold and unfeeling to those who don't know better.
* TheOlderImmortal: He refers to Frieren as still young, at least by his standards. Whether he is younger than Serie, the same age, or older, is as yet unclear.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He looks like a mature man, and refers to the thousand-plus year old Frieren as still being young. He promises to meet her again in a few centuries.
* ReligiousBruiser: As a monk, he's a devout believer in the Goddess, and a strong fighter to boot, at least according to Stark. Before he became a monk, it's implied he was of the Warrior class.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: Kraft at some pointed struggled with his longevity. He became saddened that anyone that can remember his actions in the world has already passed and came to believe in the Goddess of Creation due to his wish that there will be an afterlife and that she will remember and praise the life he had lived.

-->'''Stark''', reminiscing about his brother
\
Stark's older brother. He was a prodigy in their village of warriors and the favorite of their father, but he was still very loving towards his little sibling.
----
* TheAce: He was such a skilled warrior, that he never suffered an injury and his white cloak was never dirtied, which is why Stoltz was believed to be the strongest warrior of his village. It is no wonder that his father [[ParentalFavoritism favored him]] over Stark.
* BarelyChangedDubName: He is named after the German word for pride/proud, "Stolz". In the English translation, his name is written with an additional T, likely to help the reader with the pronunciation.
* CoolBigBro: It's initially implied that he's an AloofBigBrother to Stark, but this is quickly revealed to be not true. Stoltz loved his little brother, helped him improve on his training as a warrior and secretly cooked a big patty for him on his birthday.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His father is talking up about him to other warriors, talking about how his clean white cloak is the sign of his prowess as a warrior and diminishing his other son, Stark, pointing at his training in the field. Stoltz then goes to talk with Stark who accidentally stains his cloak, but Stoltz brushes it off, sits in the muddy field by his brother's side, and tutors him about wielding a sword, showing he valued his little brother more than his status.
* HeroicSacrifice: He told Stark to run away from the village to save himself while he stood to fight the demon attacking them, giving him a chance to survive.
* HumbleHero: He didn't really care that Stark dirtied his cloak, which was seemingly something to be proud of.
* MeaningfulName: Stolz is German for pride or proud. His father called him the pride of the village, and [[FamilyThemeNaming it matches Stark's name]], as they sound a bit similar and are both a virtue.

----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Sein. Part of Gorilla's dream was to become an unforgettable hero and go on an adventure with Sein.
* IdenticalStranger: He looks very much like Kraft, bar the ears.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Gorilla is a nickname based on Kraft, a forgotten legendary warrior from long ago. Thinking that he needed an impactful name to never be forgotten, he told everyone in his village to call him by that name to to the point that even his best friend Sein has forgotten his real name.
* UncertainDoom: Sein believes Gorilla adventuring in solitude and his brashness could have gotten him killed by now, since he promised to return to Sein in three years, but hasn't come back in a decade, which is why Sein heads out to find him.

A hero who fought on the frontlines against the demons for mankind before Himmel met Frieren. He was said to be mankind's strongest. His final battle was in the Northern Plateaus, where he faced the Demon King's eight most powerful generals and managed to take down four of them before going down.
----
* HundredPercentHeroismRating: He thought he would be forgotten by people, since someone else would eventually defeat the Demon King, but even 90 years after his death people have not forgotten his heroic deeds for mankind.
* DualWielding: He fought with a sword in each hand. Statues of him also feature him with two swords on his waist.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Eisen mentions him as early as Chapter 11. His background story was revealed over 50 chapters later.
* GoodCounterpart: He is the good counterpart to Schlacht, the Demon King's right hand. Like Schlacht, the Hero of the South was a {{seer|s}} and he was a major contributor to mankind's survival. Schlacht on the other hand tried to ensure demonkind would survive and took measures to make this happen.
* ManlyFacialHair: His face stands out, as he was a middle-aged man who sported a very finely-groomed mustache, in contrast to the young and beardless Himmel.
* NeverFoundTheBody: It is said he died in a battle against the Sages of Destruction and the Demon King's right hand, but his body was never found (which is why some even believe he survived). Frieren finds it very unlikely for him to have survived, and since demons are maneaters, she thinks he was probably eaten.
* NoNameGiven: His real name is not known. He was only called "the Hero of the South" or "the strongest of all mankind".
* {{Seers}}: Before he went to the north, he privately revealed to Frieren that he could see the future, including his own death. He was fine with this, though, as he also saw that Himmel and the others would come to Frieren and defeat the Demon King together. Thus, he was ready to go on a SuicideMission to open a path for the Hero's Party.
* WorldsStrongestMan: He was said to be mankind's strongest. Stark thinks it's an exaggeration, but Frieren thinks it was a fitting title, as he managed to eliminate the Demon Army's frontline in only one year and pushed them back to the Northern Plateau. [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome There he faced all Seven Sages of Destruction and the Demon King's right hand and managed to kill three of the Sages of Destruction]] [[UncertainDoom before he]] [[NeverFoundTheBody presumably died]].

[[spoiler:So much so that Macht was close to feeling something when he turned Glück into gold but was thanked for demon’s service by the man. 612* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Unfortunately, his daughter Lekture became very ill in her young adult years, and both he and her recent husband Denken had to watch her pass away.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: Glück knows how corrupt the nobles of the city of Weise are, and while he climbs up the ranks politically uses Macht to deal with them physically. Glück knows what he's doing is pretty unethical, but he believed that it would eventually put Weise back on the path of stability. He welcomes Macht’s attempted murder of him as judgement for what he did, which gains him the demon’s interest as Macht was interested in learning about guilt and malice.
* StaringDownCthulhu: Macht has just attacked his convoy, easily ripping his well-trained guards to shreds, so what does Glück do? He calmly gets Macht to light his cigarette and convinces him to join Glück as his retainer, offering to teach him about the human emotions Macht is interested in.
