TheProtagonist of the series. Usagi is an [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent ordinary junior high school student]] who discovers one day, thanks to the appearance of her MentorMascot Luna, that she is a warrior destined to protect Earth from the evils that threaten to destroy it. It is later revealed that she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity from centuries past, and that she will one day become Neo-Queen Serenity and rule the world. Though initially frightened by this responsibility, Usagi grows over the course of the series from a spoiled crybaby unsure of herself and her abilities into a brave fighter for love and justice (though she never quite gives up her goofy ways).
----
[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:#-B]]
* AccidentalMurder: There are instances in which Sailor Moon unintentionally leads enemies to their deaths. For example, in Sailor Moon S, she unintentionally causes [[spoiler:Viluy's death, by using Rainbow Moon Heartache against her bracelet. Viluy then commands the nanobots controlled by said bracelet to dissolve Sailor Moon, and the nanobots malfuncion, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard dissolving Viluy instead]]]].
* ACupAngst: Has this reaction to Green Esmeraude calling her and the other Sailor Guardians "skinny, pimply schoolgirls with flat chests and flat butts". A Droid also casts an illusion which draws attention to this. And of course there's the infamous Makoto breast boast... It's mostly played for laughs, but Usagi does seem to have a complex about this.

* AdaptationalDumbass: In the manga, Usagi was able to figure out Mamoru was Tuxedo Kamen on her own. In the 90's anime however, she doesn't realize it until he transforms right in front of her.
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the manga, Princess Serenity was a sweet girl who fell off the DespairEventHorizon after Endymion was killed and the Moon Kingdom was destroyed. In the live-action, Princess Serenity as Princess Sailor Moon is a {{Yandere}} for Endymion and the big PlotTwist is that [[spoiler: it was her, not Metaria, who destroyed the Moon and Earth Kingdoms with the Silver Crystal.]] Even worse, [[spoiler: she does it again.]]
* AdaptationDyeJob: In the manga, Usagi[=/=]Sailor Moon's hair is most often pale blonde and changes to silver-white as her past incarnation Princess Serenity and future self Neo-Queen Serenity. In TheNineties [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]], it's always golden blonde. ''Crystal'' zig-zags on this, depicting her with blonde hair as Princess Serenity, but platinum blonde in the future as Neo-Queen Serenity.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the 90s anime.
* AffectionateNickname: Earns several of these throughout the series, such as "Usako" (little bunny) from Mamoru and "Koneko-chan" (My (little) kitten) from Haruka.
* AfraidOfDoctors: Dentists, to be exact. She and Chibi-Usa are both terrified of them and think that the only dentist in town is sadistic.
* AgonyOfTheFeet:
** On the very first episode of the anime, Usagi's brother Shingo comes home to find her banging on the front door after getting kicked out of the house again. He then proceeds to make fun of her on his way inside, and when she tries to "Sailor V Kick" him in retaliation, he slams the door shut, causing her to kick the door full force and make a ''very'' funny face.
** While attending at a traditional tea ceremony, Chibi-Usa and Usagi's feet fall asleep from assuming the ''wariza'' sitting posture for longer than they can bear. This elicits a few snickers from Usagi when she sees Chibi-Usa struggling to maintain her composure. Cue Chibi-Usa silently punching Usagi's feet from behind, sparking a war of back-and-forth foot-punching.
** In the [=SuperS=] film, Usagi stomps the foot of an evil villainess who wanted to combat her with "a dance fight".
** When she initially confronts Nehellenia to save Mamuro, Usagi is subjected by her under a blizzard within a waste land, while also stripping her feet naked leading her to get frostbites as seen in the 5th episode of Sailor Stars. When she overcomes one of Nehellenia's Illusion, she casts thorn vines on the staircase, which are leading to her castle. Usagi has no choice, but to endure marching through it with clenched teeth.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: TheNineties anime plays with this dynamic, with Mamoru given a motorcycle and an AgeLift from high-schooler to college student while dating a middle-schooler. He's a snarky jerk to Usagi for a long time, ''but'' they don't progress beyond BelligerentSexualTension until he shapes up.
* AlliterativeFamily: The original English dubs call her Serena and her brother Sammy.
* AllLovingHeroine: Known as "The Messiah of Peace".
* AllWorkVsAllPlay: She has this relationship with both Ami and Rei. Ami is an honors student who takes her studying very seriously and Rei is a {{Workaholic}}, while Usagi herself is often lazy and tends to not take things seriously. Same goes with [[FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling her brother Shingo]] who gets good grades and does what he's told, in contrast to his sister who is BookDumb and whiny.
* AlwaysLate: Usagi is often notoriously late for school, so much so that running late is her EstablishingCharacterMoment. Instances where she gets to school on time or early, such as in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]], [[spoiler: after remembering she was Princess Serenity,]] or in the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]]'s "Usagi's Disaster: Beware the Clock of Confusion" when she and others are suffering from magical ClockTampering, are treated as OOCIsSeriousBusiness.
* AmbiguouslyBi: While she's boy-crazy and is very much in love with Mamoru (also not helped by the "destined lovers" fact surrounding them), she seems to be attracted to other girls as well if the following are any indication. She followed Rei home the first time she saw her because she was entranced with her beauty, [[WingdingEyes hearts in her eyes]] the entire time, and goes along with Haruka's flirting even after learning she's a woman. It's still left ambiguous whether she's bisexual or not, since she never gushes about girls as much as she does about boys.
* AmusingInjuries: Much of the humor comes from this, with [[ButtMonkey Usagi]] and [[NotSoAboveItAll Rei]] being the most frequent victims.
** There's a slapstick routine involving Usagi trying to "Sailor V kick" [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling Shingo]] for irritating her just after she got booted from the house for failing a test. Usagi misses and kicks the closed door, then clutches her [[AgonyOfTheFeet foot in pain]] and melodramatically wails to be let in.
** In Act 1 of both the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' Usagi first meets her cat {{familiar}} via stepping on the cat's ''spine'', tripping and {{faceplant}}ing on the sidewalk. Luna returns the favor by maniacally scratching Usagi's face, (the marks from which [[BeautyIsNeverTarnished disappear]] after a single scene) then leaping away none the worse for wear.
** In episode 104 of the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]], Usagi's feet fall asleep during a tea ceremony and Chibi-usa punches her in the foot to deliberately trigger SeizaSquirm. One word: ouch.
* AnimalMotifs:
** Rabbit. Many east Asian cultures see the Man in the Moon [[MoonRabbit as a rabbit]], so the animal has a long association with lunar motifs. Oddly enough, she hates carrots, but this may be TruthInTelevision since carrots are actually bad for rabbits in real life (and the fact that carrots are a StockYuck for Japanese children might also have something to do with it). Probably started because her name also means Rabbit. Also her family names makes it a pun on Rabbit of the Moon, the Japanese equivalent of the man in the moon. See MeaningfulName for a break down.
** Butterflies as Super Sailor Moon.
* AntiRoleModel: Played with. While she is a good person at heart, she is also lazy, whiny, hedonistic, irresponsible, and immature, [[ThisLoserIsYou demonstrating the most flawed aspects of the average person]]. This has been [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] on multiple occasions (mostly by [[BeleagueredAssistant Luna]]).
* AsleepInClass: She regularly naps during her school lectures due to never having a proper amount of sleep beforehand. She often gets reprimanded by [[SternTeacher Miss Haruna]] for this, [[StandingInTheHall getting sent to the hallway]] as punishment.
* AthleticallyChallenged: Due to her clumsiness, she lacks coordination when it comes to sports, such as ice skating, volleyball, or softball, often to EpicFail levels. The only sport she may be good at is... frisbee.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: In the anime, when she gets distracted very easily from important tasks.
* AttractiveBentGender: In Chapter 5 of the manga, Usagi uses her disguise pen to turn into a groom. And she/he is ''[[http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6vg14aXMa1r1bz0wo1_1280.jpg hot.]]''
* AuthorAvatar: [[WordOfGod Naoko Takeuchi]] has stated that Usagi was modeled after herself.
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther:
** In the original anime, Usagi and Rei are usually at ends with each other, but the series makes it clear that Rei is the closest friend to Usagi among the Guardians.
** Despite their constant bickering and fights with one another it's made clear, multiple times, that Usagi and Chibi-Usa do indeed love one another with Usagi going full MamaBear if anyone even thinks about hurting her. Their tearful goodbye at the end of ''R'' really makes it stand out especially this line in the Viz English dub:
--->'''Chibi-Usa''': I love you, Mommy.
** Usagi and Shingo have this going on. Like most siblings, their SiblingRivalry and familial love go hand in hand. When Shingo's having a problem with his best friend, Usagi's the only one there for him, and when she goes missing, he makes every effort to find her and regrets how he acted earlier.
* BabiesEverAfter: Well, Chibi-Usa ''is'' her and Mamoru's KidFromTheFuture, so it's pretty much a ForegoneConclusion that they'll have a child someday. In the last pages of the manga, which show Usagi and Mamoru's wedding, Usagi is ''very'' heavily implied to already be pregnant with Chibi-Usa.
* BadassAdorable: The cute and lovable leader of the Sailor Guardians.
* BeamOWar: Often fights the BigBad this way. One battle that stands out was when she fought the Snow Queen in her second movie.
* TheBeautifulElite: During the Silver Millenium and Crystal Tokyo.
* BelligerentSexualTension: With Mamoru in the first season. Usagi and Mamoru initially meet when she hits Mamoru in the head with a test paper, leading to Mamoru insulting her test score and Usagi screaming at how much she hates him. This progressed in both to rather heated meetings, though it became quickly clear the characters were developing an attraction to each other. This was drawn out much longer in the anime, and each encounter even had its own theme music. In both mediums, however, Usagi and Mamoru eventually realized they were not only Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, who share a more tender and heroic relationship in combat, but also learn they were lovers in the distant past as Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. Unlike a great deal of these examples, the tension is actually resolved rather early in the series and the drama with the pair after that comes from outside forces trying to force them apart. Played with in the fifth season of the anime, where Seiya (who is on the receiving end) assumes this is what Usagi does when she's attracted to someone before realizing she's not interested in him.
* BenevolentMageRuler: As Neo Queen Serenity.
* BerserkButton: Usagi is a NiceGirl, but she does have a few of these: being called a "bun head" (at least initially), being mocked for her intelligence, and when [[ClingyJealousGirl someone hits on Mamoru]] (or when she ''thinks'' they are).
* BerserkerTears: When Rubeus kidnaps her friends since her transformation broach was taken by Chibi-Usa, she bursts into tears and is on the verge of furiously ''slapping'' Chibi-Usa before Mamoru held her back.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Rei's Veronica for Mamoru's Archie, only in the first anime. [[spoiler:She wins.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** In the manga, where Usagi will really punish you in the name of the moon for your evil deeds -- with lethal magical force. Even in the anime, where she'll usually offer villains a chance to repent and be healed, she's more than willing to use deadly force if the situation calls for it.
** The episode "Sailor Venus' Past! Minako's Tragic Love" shows this as well -- when Usagi learns that Minako had her heart broken when her friend and her crush fell in love with each other, she's so angry that when the friend (who has become the MonsterOfTheWeek) attacks them, she has absolutely ''no'' intention to heal her, and is ''perfectly willing'' to just kill her. It takes Minako ''pleading'' with her to cause her to relent, and even then she's reluctant to do so. The message is clear -- [[BerserkButton you do]] ''[[BerserkButton not]]'' [[BerserkButton upset her friends]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Especially in the first anime. Usagi is a ditzy schoolgirl who cries, whines and eats a lot. But she's also a powerful Magical Girl who will fight with teeth, nails and magic to protect those she cares for.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** [[spoiler:Just after Eudial takes Neptune's Pure Heart Talisman and aims her gun at Uranus, Usagi appears in a doorway, and lunges forward, hitting Eudial and causing her to practically try to hold on to the edge of the dark cathedral pit, until she jumps onto a bell that goes down the pit. Sadly, this still doesn't stop Uranus from removing her own Talisman.]]
** In episode 8 of ''Crystal'', Moon, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter show up in time to aid Venus against Kunzite. Then in episode 18, she arrives at Calaveras' public channelling in time to rescue Sailor Venus from her.
* TheBigDamnKiss:
** ''Crystal'' Act 8 features Usagi finally kissing Mamoru after he saves her from an untimely death. This kiss is featured in the manga, but it's made more epic in the anime. There's even [[LoveBubbles sparkles]].
** Not a romantic one, but Season 3 of ''Crystal'' gives us one between [[spoiler: Haruka and Usagi]].
* BigEater: This is one of her best known traits. She's very much a glutton, and can put away a lot of food in a short amount of time.
* BigGood: She's TheLeader of the group as well as TheHero, and ultimately other Guardians recognize her as such as well.
* BigNo: She does this a lot, but here are a few major examples:
** Delivers one in the last episodes of the first and last seasons when all her friends [[spoiler:seemingly die]].
** In the first episode of the second season, ''R'', Usagi screams this as Luna restores her memories so that she can become Sailor Moon again to fight the new threat of the Makai Tree Aliens.
** In one episode of Sailor Moon S, we see the light go out in [[spoiler:Sailor Uranus']] eyes after a long and labored speech about needing Sailor Moon to complete their mission. Usagi gives a particularly heart-wrenching scream.
* BigSisterBully: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. While she's a NiceGirl, she does have her occasional moments of being one to both Chibi-Usa and Shingo. That being said, she clearly loves them dearly.
* BigSisterInstinct: Though she picks on and argues with Chibi-Usa and Shingo at times, you do ''not'' want to threaten them.
* BirdsOfAFeather: She and Makoto bond well after they become friends and have quite a bit in common, like a mutual love for food, some boy-crazy cloudcuckoolanderish tendencies… They even seem to be okay with the fact that they both have a crush on Motoki.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: On Usagi's 15th birthday, the glass slippers Mamoru got her had a Daimon Egg implanted in it, Kaolinite steals Usagi's Cosmic Heart Compact, Tuxedo Mask gets frozen in crystal by Kaolinite, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and Minako briefly puts on a (questionably convincing) Sailor Moon cosplay in an attempt to fool their enemies]].
* BlankWhiteEyes: In ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', she exhibits these briefly while suffering AgonyOfTheFeet, after her "Sailor V Kick" meant for her AnnoyingYoungerSibling Shingo instead hits their shutting front door.
* BlatantLies: Does this in Act 3 of ''Crystal''. When identified by Rei, she denies it.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The blonde to Umino's brunet and Naru's redhead.
* BodyToJewel: In the manga and ''Crystal'', the Silver Crystal forms from Usagi's tears.
* BookDumb: She struggles with bad grades, falls AsleepInClass and is almost always LateForSchool as a RunningGag. Another recurring gag is how she still can't write kanji and can only write in hiragana despite her age (Japanese children start learning how to write kanji in their first year of elementary school).
* BrainlessBeauty: She is a BookDumb IdiotHero who just so happens to be the 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon'.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Downplayed. She's a sweet person, but she can be whiny, boy-crazy, and mildly childish. She outgrows it, and while she never loses some of the milder elements, she eventually turns out to be the embodiment of pure heartedness and self sacrifice.
* BreakTheCutie: She gets broken multiple times, but especially in Sailor Stars.
* BringMyBrownPants: In episode 184 of ''Anime/SailorMoon'', the girls are freaked out after hearing a noise in the hallway in Usagi's house and Mako scares them by telling them about the horrible gory monster that was there. Seiya then tells them that he'll attack it on the count of three, but they all jump and trip on each other... only to find out that the figure was just Chibi-Chibi.
-->'''Usagi:''' Chibi-Chibi?
-->'''Rei:''' You really scared us.
-->'''Usagi:''' Another mess to clean up.
* BrokenBird:
** While she's normally an AllLovingHero, she approaches this in the [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon live-action show]], the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal''. She ''kinda'' comes close in the ''Stars'' season of the anime as well, being a [[ThePollyanna mild Pollyanna]] who acquires shades of StepfordSmiler because she doesn't want to make her friends worry over her. Ultimately, things get worse, [[spoiler: but after a huge HeroicBSOD, she ultimately overcomes this.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: Happens a lot in different versions of the franchise with her devices getting stolen, damaged or destroyed, though she always gets better. In ''Crystal'' at the end of the Dark Kingdom arc, her brooch is shattered while defeating Metalia, making her unable to be Sailor Moon until she gets a new one.
* BrownNote: In the very first episode (both 90's anime & Crystal) her crying causes people to fall unconscious and deals property damage.
* BullyHunter: Like the other Guardians, she often goes out of her way to defend those getting picked on. In the first episode, she told off a bunch of [[KidsAreCruel little brats]] for assaulting Luna. And this was ''before'' becoming Sailor Moon.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: The obvious pun aside, she can be pretty much like this. Even after she becomes Neo-Queen Serenity, in the far future, she's still the same ditzy Usagi-chan we know and love, which Mamoru (Minako in the anime) remarks upon after reading a badly-written letter from her that came back to the past with Chibi-Usa (tail end of the Black Moon arc in the manga, about one-third into the ''S'' season in the anime):
--> She really ''is'' future Usako/Usagi-chan...
* ButterflyOfTransformation: Her third season's mid-season power-up via the holy grail evokes a butterfly imagery, from her outfit's bow becoming more elaborate like a butterfly's wings, butterfly wings appearing in her Rainbow Moon Heartache StockFootage attack, plus myriad of butterflies accompanying said attack.
* ButtMonkey: Some tendency toward this, namely in the anime.
* ByThePowerOfGreyskull: "Moon Prism Power, Make Up!", "Moon Crystal Power, Make Up!", "Moon Cosmic Power, Make Up!", "Crisis, Make Up!", "Moon Crisis, Make Up!", "Moon Eternal, Make Up!(Anime)/Silver Moon Crystal Power, Make Up!(Manga)"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:C-E]]
* CantHoldHisLiquor: Being a 14-year-old girl, she can't hold liquor and HilarityEnsues [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT23P2fen4U when she is given a glass.]]
* CantTakeCriticism: It's not easy for her to accept getting called out on for making an irresponsible choice. This often leads to a MinorInsultMeltdown on her behalf.
* CartwrightCurse: Anyone who genuinely falls in love with Usagi tends to die. Mamoru/Endymion a number of times (though he always gets better), Prince Demande, and even Seiya is killed in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]]... Seems the only people who ever got spared for liking Usagi even the slightest bit were Umino, who later moved on to Usagi's best friend in the first [[Anime/SailorMoon anime]], and Ail (but in his case, his [[BrotherSisterIncest sister/love interest]] commits a HeroicSacrifice in order to save him, so he very nearly missed the mark there...).
* ChainedHeat: An attack by a Daimon handcuffs Sailor Moon and Sailor Uranus together for an episode. This serves as a plot device since they'd been at odds since they ran into each other and have avoided contact. Being stuck together helps each to understand how the other thinks.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** In the manga, she starts doing better at school after the first arc, having realized that a few grades are trivial compared to the world nearly ending and being forced to kill her love. Her parents even comment on it and are proud of her.
** After her memories are restored in the first anime, she starts dealing with PTSD about seeing her friends die in front of her. This starts affecting her powers badly. She's finally forced to admit that she wanted her normal life back and decides to take up the fight again to save her friends.
* TheChessmaster: Implied, not with Usagi, but with Neo-Queen Serenity. It is heavily implied that Neo-Queen Serenity arranged for Chibi-Usa to be trained in the past and to "forge important bonds", which she eventually did with Hotaru, for the sake of setting things in motion for Pharaoh 90 and the Death Busters to be defeated without sacrificing innocents lives.
* TheChewToy: She's often prone to AmusingInjuries due to her own clumsiness.
* ChildishOlderSibling: She is regularly BookDumb and prone to childlike behavior, while her little brother Shingo is much more studious and mature.
* TheChosenZero: Luna selects Usagi Tsukino to be Sailor Moon, the first of the Sailor Guardians, largely because of Usagi's kindness to her in saving her from some little kids that were tormenting her. She then goes on to repeatedly lament her choice after getting to know Usagi and learning that she is [[BookDumb bad at her studies]], [[TheSlacker prone to goofing off]], [[TheKlutz incredibly clumsy]], [[TheDitz quite ditzy]], [[SleepyHead a chronic oversleeper]], [[CowardlyLion kind of cowardly]], [[ProneToTears and a massive crybaby]]. The rest of the Sailor Guardians are equally critical of Usagi's faults ([[{{Hypocrite}} in spite of sharing some of them themselves]]). Then they discover she's actually the reincarnation of Moon Princess Serenity; the critique ''doubles'', as now they can lament about how she fails to live up to the grace, poise, and majesty of her past incarnation. [[ZigzaggingTrope The trope then zigzags]] in that she does legitimately mature over the course of the story; she will canonically grow out of these faults to become a much-beloved god-queen.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Moreso in the Nineties anime; she is lazy, clumsy, cowardly, crybaby, ditzy, and BookDumb; but she is essentially a girl of good heart and IncorruptiblePurePureness.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Toward Mamoru, often. More as a sign of childishness than serious clinginess, and she develops past it in the manga.
* ClothesMakeTheLegend: Her sailor suit in all of her forms of Sailor Moon is quite iconic.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: The kid's thought patterns can sometimes be very, ''very'' weird. Especially in the first anime.
* ColorCodedSecretIdentity: Usagi's first school uniform looks very similar to the outfit she wears as Sailor Moon. They both have a white shirt/bodysuit with a blue sailor collar, a red bow on the chest, and a blue pleated skirt.
* ComicBooksAreReal: Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus are the only Sailor Guardians who are explicitly shown having a franchise. One occasion, has disguised Sailor Venus saving Usagi's secret identity as Sailor Moon by passing her as a crybaby fan who owned a fake Cosmic Heart Compact.
* CowardlyLion: One of the best examples of Usagi's CharacterDevelopment in the series is watching how she handles the dangerous situations around her. While she might still be afraid of the monsters she fights ultimately Usagi becomes strong enough to fight for her friends and the earth when push comes to shove. Usagi even {{lampshades}} this in ''R'' [[spoiler:right before she goes off to face Rubeus]] as she notes that the old her would have probably wailed and cried about not wanting to do something so dangerous.
* CrashIntoHello:
** She meets Mamoru in this fashion innumerable times; in ''Stars'', this starts over again, this time with Seiya.
** This is how Chibi-Usa is introduced. She literally falls from the sky when Usagi and Mamoru are on a date, lands on Usagi, and ends up accidentally kissing Mamoru. HilarityEnsues.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: If you give her a reason to stop complaining and fight you, she ''will''. Especially in the manga where she TookALevelInBadass.
* CrushBlush: In ''Crystal'', when Usagi accidentally sits next to Mamoru on the bus, she attempts to hide that she's doing this... by holding Luna up in front of her face.
* {{Cuckoosnarker}}: Usagi is a KindheartedSimpleton, but she surprisingly has her snarky side to her, especially when [[VitriolicBestBuds Rei]] is involved.
* CuteButCacophonic:
** She and Chibi-Usa are able to scream loud enough to stun a monster — and Usagi has it as a weapon in the SNES fighting games. The game usage is probably a MythologyGag, referencing her first fight as Sailor Moon, in which Usagi actually manages to stun a youma and its mind-controlled horde of drained humans with her crying.
** It is said that, when they (Moon and Chibi Moon) are transformed, their screams are amplified by the red hairclips they have on their odango and turned into supersonic waves, which is how they manage to cause so much damage. However, it does require a cry loud enough to activate this "weapon", apparently.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Very much so, since she is prone to tripping. In the manga and ''Crystal'', she first meets her cat {{familiar}} Luna by tripping over her and {{faceplant}}ing while running LateForSchool.
* TheCutie: Easily the most innocent and happy-go-lucky Guardians. She's unfailingly optimistic and forgiving to anyone and everyone.
* DaddysGirl: Kenji-papa is quite protective of her.
* DanceOfRomance: In ''Crystal'' Act 4, Tuxedo Mask asks Usagi to dance, and the two of them share a romantic moment laden with sparkling shoujo bubbles.
* DeathIsCheap: One of Sailor Moon's powers is explicitly resurrection, so expect main characters to die at least once per storyline. This is more prevalent in the manga than in the anime; in the latter, Sailor Moon cannot really control this power, so the Guardians tend to die a lot less often.
* DeclarationOfProtection: Gives one to Crystal Tokyo, despite Wiseman having everything to win by that point.
* DependingOnTheWriter: She can be a powerful ActionGirl in some episodes, whereas in other episodes (particularly in season 1), she can be quite inept in battle, with her final blow on the enemy being her only useful superpower. The latter is less frequent in later seasons but still occasionally pops up.
* DespairEventHorizon: Comes close to a few of these. Fortunately, her friends and teammates are there to pull her through.
* {{Determinator}}: Grows into an off-and-on version of this. When she's dug in, she ''will not give up'', but it often takes a significant amount of flakiness, cowardice and complaining before she gets in the game.
* DisappointingOlderSibling: Part of the reason Shingo acts like an AnnoyingYoungerSibling to her is that he's disappointed in how klutzy and BookDumb she is.
* DisproportionateRetribution: She slaps Mamoru in the face simply because the latter didn't know her birthday. Turns out this was because she never told him, and [[{{Hypocrite}} she also didn't know his birthday]]. She does apologize to Mamoru for slapping him, though.
* TheDitz: Usagi's ditzy personality is tied together with the rest of her character, [[AdaptationalDumbass especially in]] the first anime.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Her official profile states that her least favorite food is carrots, which is rather ironic considering that [[MeaningfulName her name means "rabbit"]] and she's [[AnimalMotifs closely associated with them]]. Could be TruthInTelevision as carrots are not very good for rabbits, though this might also indicate her childishness since carrots are a StockYuck for Japanese children.
* DominoMask: Originally wore a mask similar to Sailor V's in the manga, but discarded it so often that it eventually disappeared from her character design entirely.
* DoomedHometown: Princess Serenity's home, the Moon Kingdom, was destroyed by the Dark Kingdom.
* DopeSlap: She accidentally gave one to Shingo as she tried to take away his Chanela, though she was remorseful over it. In another episode, she gave one to Mamoru over forgetting her birthday (she failed to realize she never told him). Again, she is remorseful for it.
* DreadfulMusician: In one episode of the anime when she tries (and fails) to play the violin.
* DrivenToSuicide: In the manga, her past self committed suicide after Endymion was killed. This is carried over into ''Crystal'' and, [[spoiler:once dragged to the Dark Kingdom, is forced to fight a possessed Mamoru, cuts him down and then turns the blade onto herself]]. Don't worry, she gets better.
* DudeMagnet: Mamoru besides, also several other fall in love with her.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Despite defeating various monsters, she gets little to no respect from [[VitriolicBestBuds Rei]], [[CatsAreMean Luna]] and [[BrattyHalfPint Chibi-Usa]], the latter of whom she risks her own life trying to save multiple times. At least all three of them [[CharacterDevelopment treat her better as time goes on]].
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: It happens to her several times.
** After [[spoiler:Rei fights a youma in the finale of the first season and is killed, after all the other inner scouts have died fighting,]] Usagi's eyes become blank and [[HeroicBSOD she shuts down.]]
** She also gets blank eyes when she [[spoiler:turns into Princess Serenity]] for the first time.
** Around half of ''Super S'', Usagi gets these eyes again [[spoiler: when her Dream Mirror is ''shattered'' in pieces]].
** This also happens to Usagi when [[spoiler:the Silver Crystal is shattered on reentry]] at the end of the [[Anime/SailorMoonRTheMovie Sailor Moon R movie]] but it could be because [[spoiler:she's dead]]. It's about like it is with the before mentioned Dream Mirror.
* DumbassHasAPoint: She is known for her ditzy and scatter-brained nature, but she does give valuable lessons and advice to her teammates and even her enemies, to which they actually agree with her on.
* DumbBlonde: She's BookDumb and can be a {{Cloudcuckoolander}}. Yeah, she probably fits.
* DumbIsGood: Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but is one of the sweetest people to befriend.
* DumbMuscle: She is a powerful ActionGirl who is rather slow on the uptake.
* EdibleAmmunition: In the final season she once used a Pizza for her "Moon Tiara Action" attack due to the fact that her final outfit lacked a Tiara.
* EmptyEyes: After the climax of ''Sailor Moon S'', Usagi emerges from her battle against [[spoiler:Pharaoh 90]] with blank, horrified eyes.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Her first scene is her sleeping in late, nearly forgetting her lunch, and running to school while still half asleep. That's it. That's all you need to know about Usagi.
* EternalLove: With Mamoru. They were lovers in a past life in ancient times, had a ReincarnationRomance in modern time, and will still be together in the thirtieth century with a daughter.
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: Especially in the manga. Haruka even manages to kiss her in it.
* ExpressiveHair: Infamously known as "Dumpling Head" ("Bun Head" if you're watching the Viz subs).
* ExpyCoexistence: She was originally created as an {{Expy}} of Minako, who Takeuchi originally created for a one-shot that would later become ''Manga/CodenameSailorV''. Minako herself would later join the team as Sailor Venus. Since the two of them were already very similar in appearance and personality, the 90s anime would later {{Flanderize}} Minako's sillier traits as a way to distinguish the two.
* EyelidPullTaunt: Her and Rei's relationship is largely giving each other red-eye.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:F-H]]
* TheFace: As the heart and the leader of the team, she's the one who holds the group together. Most of the others just don't have her way with people when she first meets them or are too committed to their duties to fill the role.
* FairytaleWeddingDress:
** An episode of the original anime centered around these dresses. A wedding dress contest plays a part in Nephrite's scheme of the week, with Usagi using the Disguise Pen to turn herself into a beautiful bride in one of these.
** Spoiler in the final chapter of the manga, [[spoiler:Usagi gets to wear one for real at her wedding to Mamoru]].
* FauxActionGirl: Perhaps due to her status as one of anime's most iconic characters, it is sometimes overlooked that Usagi's combat performance in season 1 of the original series is flat out abysmal. Although there are episodes where she was legitimately capable in fights by herself, a good chunk of the time, she needs to be rescued by Tuxedo Mask or her fellow sailor guardians in other fights, sometimes on multiple occasions in the same episode. And it's not just due to her inexperience either, as this continues well over 20 episodes into the show. Though this can make sense when one remembers that she is the only Sailor Guardian who never ''was'' one in her previous lifetime while all the others actually were and would have [[PastLifeMemories past life experience]] guiding them subconsciously.
* FamilyEyeResemblance: In ''[=SuperS=]'', Queen Nehelenia is terrified by Usagi/Sailor Moon's sad eyes because Queen Serenity had the same sad eyes when the latter sealed the evil queen.
* {{Fangirl}}: In ''Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon'', she and the others are fangirls of Aino Minako, an IdolSinger who also turns out to be Sailor Venus.
* FearOfThunder: One episode of ''Anime/SailorMoon R'' reveals this, and it negatively impacts her harshly. Usagi's daughter Chibi-Usa also has a fear of thunder too.
* FeatherMotif:
** Eternal Sailor Moon, her attacks of Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss and Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss which invoke purification with a blast of white sparkly feathers.
** Her Moon Crystal Power transformation in the R season also invokes this when she sprouts angel wings during the transformation.
* FemininityFailure: In one late episode of the first season, Usagi joins a club designed to help create "princesses", thinking that she could be more lady-like after the revelation that she was Princess Serenity. She flops with flying colors, the only thing she was good at was Frisbee throwing.
* FireForgedFriends: With Rei. Rei was outright mean to Usagi at times and they always teased or mocked each other, then the whole love triangle between them and Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask started. By the end of the first season they become really close in guardian-related issues. When [[spoiler:Rei dies in the second to final episode of the first arc, Sailor Moon goes HeroicBSOD]], after [[spoiler: everyone's revived]] and they go through more adventures, Rei is almost always the first one to shout Usagi's name and stand up for her when she needs it, and Usagi returns the favor as much as she can.
* FirstFriend: To all the Inner Guardians, who had no real friends before meeting her, especially Ami, the first one she meets. On the other hand, Usagi herself already had other friends before meeting the Guardians, although they were DemotedToExtra after the first season, once she starts [[LimitedSocialCircle hanging out with the Guardians all the time]].
* FirstGirlAfterAll: According to the R'' movie, ''Promise of the Rose'', [[ReincarnationRomance Usagi and Mamoru]] count as this in their lives on Earth because [[spoiler: Usagi ''actually'' met Mamoru when they were both little kids. The day Ikuko gave birth to Usagi's little brother Shingo, a no-older-than-5 Usagi brought [[SomethingAboutARose red roses]] as a gift and later snuck around nearby hospital rooms, with one of the roses in her hand. She then entered the one where a no-older-than-ten Mamoru was hospitalized, still grieving over the deaths of his parents and his TraumaInducedAmnesia, and after a short talk she gave him the rose to make him feel better...]]
* FisherQueen: As Neo-Queen Serenity.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Rei, in the '90s anime. While Usagi is lazy, Rei is a complete {{workaholic}}. Usagi struggles in her role as a Guardian, while Rei instantly takes to it. While Usagi initially rejects leadership, Rei covets Usagi’s position, and needs to feel control of everything. Usagi sucks at sports (except for Frisbee), while Rei’s athleticism is commented upon (and is only second to Makoto in a strength test shown in opening of the S movie). Usagi has relatively few talents, and Rei has a wide range of talents (singing, organizing a school festival, composing music, modelling, skiing, fire-reading, and ESP among others). Usagi readily admits her shortcomings, while Rei pretends she is infallible. Usagi is openly affectionate, and believes in relying on friends to help you through problems, while Rei is reluctant to show affection, often tries to do everything herself, and keeps her problems to herself.
** To Minako in the manga. Both are blonde, bubbly love addicts that aren't academically inclined. However, while Usagi's ditziness is, to some extent, genuine, Minako is actually a genius who quickly masters whatever she tries her hand at, and has a wide range of skills and accomplishments to her name that no other teenager would be able to claim. She simply cannot be bothered with schoolwork. While Usagi initially spends her first few days as a Guardian running from her enemies, Minako faces the enemies head-on. While Usagi refuses to let go of her love and her friends, Minako isn't as fortunate and is forced to kill her love interest and let her perfectly good social life waste away as she keeps working as a Sailor Guardian. For this reason, while Usagi's cheer and optimism are genuine, Minako [[StepfordSmiler puts on a brave face]] out of refusal to show weakness. While Usagi cries and whines when she has problems, Minako just gets pissed, and resolves to come out on top. Usagi was born having all the power she needed as Sailor Moon, while Minako has to grind to become the unbelievably skilled warrior that she is.
* TheFool: Rei usually picks on her for this.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The Foolish to Shingo's Responsible, though she of course still ends up rescuing him a few times in the anime.
* ForgottenPhlebotinum:
** In the first act[=/=]episode, Sailor Moon's red orbs adorning her odango blink, beep and act as [[SuperSenses super hearing]] devices projecting the sound of her friend Naru's cries for help.
** Sailor Moon can also use her domino mask as a SpiderSense to see that Naru is in trouble. Despite how obviously useful this is, neither ability appears again.
** The manga justifies this, as Usagi was horrified by what she saw in the mask, and in a number of post transformation panels, she can be seen holding the mask as if discarding it, showing she still had the mask but preferred not to wear it. After her transformation and outfit are upgraded thoughout the first arc, it stops appearing, aside from a single use in the second arc, where she uses another new power with it to see what people have been replaced with droids.
** Episode 5 of the anime showed Usagi using a skill called "Moon Tiara Stardust" that recycled the stock animation of her normal attack, but the effect allowed her to heal children possessed by the monster of the day. This power only showed up once, and by the time she was needed to heal humans again, she used the newly-acquired Moon Stick (which unlike "Moon Tiara Stardust" did actually show up in the manga.)
** She can bring the dead back to life or heal and turn a reformed enemy into a human if they wish, so they can have a normal life. The former may cost Usagi's life in turn if she overuses the Silver Crystal, but the latter is no effort at all. [[spoiler:When Wiseman fatally injures Saphir in the anime, Sailor Moon is too distraught to consider using the Silver Crystal to heal him. It's unclear if he was too far gone for her to help. She and Tuxedo Kamen hold him in his last moments, begging him to hang on for Petz's sake]].
** Most infamously, the Silver Crystal in ''Sailor Moon S''. In the beginning of the season, Usagi worries that it is losing its power when her attack weakens and her transformation undoes itself, but after it is revitalized by Usagi and Mamoru's love, it's ''never'' brought up again. Which is puzzling because after Hotaru was revealed to be possessed by Mistress 9 the whole, the ''true'' threat, it would have been logical for Sailor Moon to use the Silver Crystal to purge Mistress 9 from her body since purging evil from a person or place has been a power of Sailor Moon's since the beginning and it's a power that doesn't drain her of her energy, so it would stand to reason that this would be able to save the world and defeat the enemy without sacrificing Hotaru. Instead, the Silver Crystal isn't even ''mentioned'' as a possible option in defeating the Death Busters or saving Hotaru. Even more frustrating, after Sailor Saturn awakens, she rejects Sailor Moon's assistance because without the Holy Grail, she couldn't become Super Sailor Moon which she claims would've been useful to her. This, '''''again''''', ignores the Silver Crystal which was stated to have the capacity to destroy an entire planet (the same capability as Saturn's power) or heal it, and was much more powerful than the Holy Grail.
* ForGreatJustice: "I am the Pretty Guardian who fights for love ''and for justice!''"
* FourGirlEnsemble: Part of one along with Naru, Yumiko and Kuri before the other Sailors show up, Usagi being the sweet-naive one.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The sanguine in her family.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. While the Inner Guardians don't ''hate'' her, they are constantly annoyed with Usagi's laziness, clumsiness, whininess, incompetence, and refusal to take things seriously. Although it's interesting that [[BirdsOfAFeather Minako]] shares much of these traits (given that Usagi is her expy) but isn't treated the same way...
* FriendlyRivalry: With [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling Shingo]] and [[KidFromTheFuture Chibi-Usa]]. Most of their bickering is simply good old friendly teasing. Also with [[VitriolicBestBuds Rei]] during their personal feuds.
* FriendToAllChildren: With a few exceptions (such as [[KidsAreCruel the children who tormented Luna]] in the first episode), she's shown to be very helpful to children. Her and Mamoru once took care of a baby and Usagi was immediately attached to the child -- in return, the baby loved Usagi back. In fact, she announces ThisIsUnforgivable to any villain who would ''ever'' think of [[WouldHurtAChild harming an innocent child]].
* FullFrontalAssault: At the end of ''Sailor Stars'', she takes the form of a naked angel for her final battle with [[FinalBoss Sailor Galaxia]].
* GamerChick: She loves video games and spends entirely too much time at the Crown Arcade. In her case, however, she's a spectacularly ''bad'' player.
* GaussianGirl:
** Appears this way in all versions where Mamoru first dreams of her as the princess.
** When Usagi and Mamoru first really look at each other, it suddenly becomes a mutual HeldGaze in soft focus, with a few LoveBubbles appearing as they stare at each other. The filter dissipates as Usagi realizes the moment's awkwardness.
* GenericCuteness: Usagi is regularly the target of fat jokes and Rei occasionally makes fun of her appearance. Especially jarring in that the series uses OnlySixFaces. This also holds true for her weight, even though when you look at her it's hard to tell that she's supposedly a little overweight.
* GeniusDitz: Even when she acts like a ditz, she does have one field of brilliance: friendships and people's feelings.
* GenkiGirl: Often goes crazy in a variety of situations.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Winds up on the receiving end of this ''3 times'' in the anime, always following an emotional outburst. First one is from [[VitriolicBestBuds Rei]] for complaining that she wanted to give up being a Guardian after seeing Mamoru wounded and captured, second one from [[BewareTheNiceOnes Ami]] (of ''all'' people!) for offering up the Silver Crystal so that the rest of the Guardians wouldn’t have to sacrifice their lives, and the third one from [[FakeDefector Haruka]] for being in denial that Haruka and Michiru were supposedly turning against them.
* GirlishPigtails: She has her famous combo of odango hair and pigtails, being rather childish in attitude.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: In the live-action, Luna takes the form of Usagi's stuffed cat toy until she gets a human form.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: Usagi is a LoveFreak with very long GirlishPigtails, is ditzy, romantic, emotional, cries a lot, and is terrible at sports. She just has a few traits, like being a BigEater, liking comic books and video games(also and a terrible gamer), that make her less ladylike than her friend Naru early on in the series.Usagi's tomboy tendencies are to improve school performance which are unbearable at the beginning of the story.
* GirlyRun: In Act 1 of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', Sailor Moon makes her public debut while yelling at MonsterOfTheWeek Morga assertively, but then enters the scene with arms upraised and unsteady gait, along with the SloMo effect usually reserved for an UnflinchingWalk. It underscores that, while Usagi's heart's in the right place, she's ''really'' green at the MagicalGirlWarrior thing. While her running in-series improves to match her growing up, the opening to Season 3 falls back to this trope.
* GleefulAndGrumpyPairing: With Shingo. She is a ditzy and fun-loving GenkiGirl in contrast to her more serious and moody brother. She also has this relationship with Rei, who has a HairTriggerTemper.
* GogglesDoSomethingUnusual: (Manga only) Her mask lets her see disguised enemies and those who are in danger. She doesn't like it though and takes it off until it stops appearing.
* GoGoEnslavement: Prince Demande kidnaps Usagi and dresses her in something ''less'' revealing than her Sailor Guardian Uniform: -- a white flowy dress with gold at the bust. It still counts, since Demande is trying to make Moon look more like her future self Neo Queen Serenity [[{{Yandere}} upon whom he has a very creepy crush]] and it has a ''very'' low cleavage. And both in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', he gets away with giving her a ForcefulKiss (in the anime, Demande ''almost'' smooches poor Usagi by force but Mamoru's BigDamnHeroes stops this).
* GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: She wears mostly (as Sailor Moon) or completely in white (as Serenity). In the Silver Millennium, her mother was worshipped as a goddess, and in modern times she ''is'' a PhysicalGoddess.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's one of the kindest, sweetest and most compassionate people around, but try to harm her friends and her love and you're in for a world of pain. Even more so in the manga, where she is less forgiving of her enemies when she feels they have crossed a line.
* GreenEyedMonster: She can be rather moody whenever [[ClingyJealousGirl somebody takes an interest in Mamoru]].
* GreenRocks: Her crystal seems to [[NewPowersAsThePlotDemands gain whatever properties are necessary for a particular arc's plot]]. It can defeat evil beings, except for when it only seals them away or heals them! It can grant its user's dying wish, except when using it doesn't cause death! It's useful for saving cities of the future, initiating {{Transformation Sequence}}s, and also apparently could serve as a great power battery for {{Big Bad}}s! It even plays music! And yet, [[ForgottenPhlebotinum it wasn't even mentioned]] as a possible means to resolve the conflict of the third season with the Death Busters and Mistress 9, [[PlotHole even though it had solved similar problems in previous seasons]].
* HairColorSpoiler: The princess is revealed to be Usagi... after several earlier episodes had shown Tuxedo Mask having dreams about a woman in a princess dress and the exact same odango hairstyle as Usagi.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: In the anime. She stays quite naïve and innocent throughout the series, and as a princess, she's pretty much PurityPersonified.
* HairTriggerTemper: Not to [[HotBlooded Rei's]] degree, but she goes from calm to extremely mad with minimal provocation. This may be contributed from her hyperactivity.
* HarpOfFemininity: Had one as Princess Sailor Moon. Her Princess Sword could transform into the Princess Harp, which she used for healing magic.
* HatesBeingAlone: Usagi appears to have an innate fear of being alone and losing everyone she ever cares about. Which isn't so surprising when you consider that, in most continuities, [[spoiler:Usagi ends up losing her Guardians and Mamoru to the Dark Kingdom's forces and is forced to fight alone for a while.]] Part of the reason that Usagi sheds tears for Nehellenia in the 90's anime [[spoiler:and even almost allows Nehellenia to kill her]] is because she admits she wouldn't be able to handle the idea of spending an eternity alone like Nehellenia did.
* HealingHands: Can heal others with her Moon Healing Escalation, though she needs her crystal or wand to do it.
* TheHeart: She's the female centerpiece of the series and the glue that holds everyone together. Especially emphasized in the live-action series, in which a group of four loners (Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako) all become true friends through Usagi's love and affection.
** Anime/SailorMoonRTheMovie also emphasizes that all of the Sailor Guardians, Mamoru, and even the ''villain'' would have been lonely and friendless without Usagi.
* HeartBeatDown: Many of her attacks involve love and hearts; one attack even consists of blasting enemies in the face with a gigantic glass heart. This trait would pass down to Chibi-Usa.
* HeartLight: Her final form consists of her having wings and a Glowing lotus symbol on her chest.
* TheHedonist: The only things on her mind are junk food, video games, and boys.
* HeldGaze: After sniping at each other without really meeting eyes, Usagi pulls her test paper away from her face to further chastise Mamoru for mocking her low score, only to gasp as they both stare open mouthed, the scene turns mutually {{Gaussian|Girl}} and LoveBubbles appear. Usagi breaks the gaze and makes an awkward retreat, acutely aware that she finds the nameless boy attractive.
* HenshinHero: One of the best-known MagicalGirl-based examples of the trope.
* HereditaryHairstyle:
** Queen Serenity, her mother in her past incarnation, has Usagi's exact hairstyle.
** Her daughter has a very similar hairstyle too.
* HeroesFrontierStep: She is introduced as a clumsy slacker, but reveals her kind nature by saving Luna from being tormented by a group of children.
* HeroesPreferSwords:
** In the anime, Sailor Moon wields one when fighting Galaxia as the last hero standing.
** In the [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon live-action series]] [[spoiler:Princess Sailor Moon]] has a sword.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Usagi hits this pretty hard in the first season. The first time is when she's slammed with a rapid fire set of information -- that annoying Mamoru's her love interest Tuxedo Kamen, she's the long-lost Moon Princess Princess Serenity, they got the Silver Crystal and... oh, yeah, the Dark Kingdom has Mamoru, who, last she saw, was ''dying''. She starts crying that she doesn't want to do this anymore and just be a normal girl, even willing to just go ahead and fork over the Crystal before a desperate Rei has to [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan slap some sense into her]]. She does it again in the finale as the girls drop like flies, ultimately leading to her wishing that she could be a normal girl after finishing off Beryl.
** Usagi has another one at the final arc of Stars. She watches her best friends and guardians die in one fell swoop, Rei dying in her arms. While she's still reeling from that, she looks up and sees that her love, Mamoru, had his Star Seed removed a long time ago, and she had no idea that he'd been attacked and dead all season long. To say that she's having a rough day is putting it mildly. And that's not even the end of her bad day.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Highlighted in the third season of the anime, when Haruka and Michiru begin hurling this at Usagi.
* HeroicWillpower: When the chips are really down, she can show this -- until then, she's a bit limp. An example is her fight against Rubeus in the '90s anime, where she stands up under super-enhanced gravity using nothing but determination.
* TheHeroine: The one and only Sailor Moon.
* HeroWithAUniqueName: The only Sailor Guardian who is not named after a planet in the Solar System and instead named after Earth's moon.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Naru, at least until the Sailor Guardians start showing up.
* HiddenDepths: She's not as stupid as she appears at first, and is quite good with people's feelings -- notably, she's the only one who saw through [[StepfordSmiler Minako's happy act]].
* TheHighQueen: As Neo-Queen Serenity in Crystal Tokyo.
* HoldingHands: In Usagi's second recurring dream of a romance between a prince and princess, her view of the dream princess changes to a first-person perspective, in which she sees herself running while holding tight to the sword-wielding prince.
* HolyHandGrenade: A lot of her attacks are a blast of pure light of love and justice, yet she's usually the one who vaporizes the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* HonorBeforeReason: She fights for what she feels is right, namely love and justice, even if she doesn't always think things through.
* HopelessWithTech: Usagi has trouble using a computer early on in both the manga and the first anime. This was justified back in the early 90's, when the series originally began, because personal computers were new technology that Usagi and everyone else were still learning to use. But in ''Crystal'' (which is set in TheNewTens), it's absolutely comical, as Usagi ([[TheDitz airheaded though she might be]]) is a teenage girl who (like her peers, and like much of the audience) has ''been around technology all her life''.
* HotBlooded: She's a NiceGirl, but she often can be quite moody, overemotional, and temperamental, [[ClingyJealousGirl especially when it comes to Mamoru]].
* HowDoIShotWeb: During her first fight, she has no idea how to use her powers until Luna tells her what to do.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** She can be a ClingyJealousGirl toward Mamoru and hates when other women get close to him, but she is not always faithful herself, judging by the way she stares at other boys. Apparently, only one of them needs to be 100% devoted. This is mostly in the first anime.
** In one episode, she slaps Mamoru for forgetting her birthday even though she never told him, but she doesn't know his birthday either.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:I-L]]
* IdealHero: Cements herself in this role at the end of the manga when she doesn't destroy the Cauldron and [[spoiler:gives Sailor Cosmos the hope to win her battle back in the future]]. Notably, she's the one Sailor Soldier who continued to hold Sailor Venus as a role model (partly because she was the first to see through her facade and not holding her as too good), and the side stories show that they sometime go around superheroing together with Sailor Moon as the ''sidekick''.
* IdiotHero: A female example, being depicted as BookDumb and a bit of a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} at times, but especially in the early series since she matures and becomes a true hero later on. She isn't quite so bad in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] though, the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]] tended to [[CharacterExaggeration exaggerate]] many characters.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Doesn't want to be Sailor Moon if she can help it, at first. As the series progresses, she begins to take more pride in her role as a Guardian. The reasons do change as the series progresses. At first, she just doesn't want to have to put herself in danger (her crybaby persona). As the series progresses, though, her resentment comes because of what the responsibility of being Sailor Moon has done to her and those around her (sort of like a MagicalGirl version of ComicBook/SpiderMan).
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Usagi is Type A. She developed her relationships with relative ease due to discovering a shared history through Reincarnation, and BecauseDestinySaysSo. Since multiple TrueCompanions are also her reincarnated HeroSecretService, she's essentially the center of their social circle.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Insanely good at winning those, in the anime.
* ImOkay: In the Act 1 ColdOpen of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' this is {{subverted|Trope}}, after her extended {{Pratfall}} StaircaseTumble down her household stairs and an OffScreenCrash.
-->'''Ikuko''': Are you alright?\
'''Usagi''': ''[yelling offscreen]'' I'm ''not'' alright! ''[enters rubbing rear]'' Ouuuuuch.
* ImplausibleHairColor: Her parents have black hair and blue hair respectively, but she is a blonde. At least her brother's hair color matches hers in the manga and ''Crystal''.
* IncestSubtext: Chibi-Usa has a Freudian relationship with her, and when Shingo sees her as Sailor Moon, he gets a bit of a crush on her because he has no idea that Sailor Moon is his own sister.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Manages to resist [[TheCorruption getting turned evil]] and maintains her cheery personality despite having a bigger TraumaCongaLine than most magical girls from {{Deconstruction}} animes.
* InformedAbility: Many character bios says her favorite subject is Home Economics, in spite of how awful she was and how much she seemed to hate it in episode 16.
* InformedFlaw: In the anime she claims she's chubby and flat-chested, and bothered about this. She looks exactly like every other female character in terms of body model. Takeuchi herself wrote in her notes to the anime artists that Usagi should look slightly chubbier than the other Sailors, but this design choice was mostly ignored.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Her eyes represent her good personality traits, like kindness and loyalty.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Due to her naivety, she has a habit of unintentionally offending others. In one episode, when [[ItMakesSenseInContext Miss Haruna is hospitalized for being put into comatose]], Usagi fails to understand the seriousness of the situation and tells the others that this is a ''good'' thing for her.
* InSeriesNickname: She's called "Odango Atama" (meaning "Dumpling Head", changed to "Meatball Head" in the original dub) in reference to her hairstyle.
* InsultBackfire: One MonsterOfTheWeek uses people's insecurities against them, leading Sailor Mercury to despair and almost making her attack her friends. Sailor Moon, though? Not only does she completely dismiss all the insults the monster hurls at her[[note]]because she's so used to it[[/note]], no, when the monster says that she's weird, she grins happily and takes it as a praise.
* InTheNameOfTheMoon: TropeNamer. "I am the Pretty Guardian who fights for love and for justice! I am Sailor Moon! And now, {{in the name of the moon}}, I will punish you!"
* InvisibleToNormals: Nobody notices that Usagi looks ''exactly'' like Sailor Moon. Could be justified in that in the manga, very few pedestrians have seen both Usagi ''and'' Sailor Moon, and the ones who have, like Naru, were usually out cold in one way or another. The live-action gets around this by making the girls' distinct hairstyles only part of their guardian uniforms. When not transformed they all have straight dark brown / black hair like normal Japanese girls.
* {{Irony}}: At the conclusion of the battle with Death Busters and Pharaoh 90, Haruka and Michiru declare that Usagi's idealistic ways and desire to save the world without sacrificing Hotaru proves that she's unfit to be queen, and yet it is heavily implied that Neo-Queen Serenity herself [[TheChessmaster was the one to set things in motion]] when she told Chibi-Usa to train in the past and befriend an "important person" who would later turn out to be [[ApocalypseMaiden Hotaru]], thereby leading to the events of the season to play out the way they did with no one being sacrificed as Hotaru's bond with Chibi-Usa was an important factor in her overpowering Mistress 9, awakening as Sailor Saturn, and destroying Pharaoh 90 with Super Sailor Moon once and for all.
* IWasHavingSuchANiceDream: Happens to her more than once. In the ColdOpen of ''Crystal'' Act 1, both Usagi and the audience are cheated out her dream's romantic climax, as a prince and princess embrace, the music swells, they lean in for a [[KissingDiscretionShot kiss]], and... FadeToWhite as Usagi's alarm clock goes off.
* {{Joshikousei}}: Usagi and all of the other Sailor Soldiers are the TropeCodifier.
* KamehameHadoken: Whenever she uses the Silver Crystal.
* KarmicJackpot: Usagi is often derided for being idealistic beyond reason, even in the face of absolute despair that would break the spirit of many a warrior, pushing them towards morally ambiguous choices for the greater good. However, given this show's position on the SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism, Usagi gets justified time and again in her actions because she manages to achieve the absolute best results:
** In the ''Sailor Moon R'' movie, that one rose kid Usagi had given Mamoru... which Mamoru gave to Fiore ended up paying back in spades, as it was the only thing that actually broke the Xenian flower's hold on Fiore's mind, once he realized it actually was a present from Sailor Moon all along, triggering a full-blown HeelRealization.
** In ''Sailor Moon S'', she gives the MacGuffin to TheDragon who is [[DemonicPossession possessing an innocent girl, albeit one proven to be an extremely dangerous warrior, the portent of ruin, Sailor Saturn]], even after many warnings not to. The BigBad gets summoned, and as all hope seems to be lost... Sailor Saturn manages to break through and win the IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight, utterly destroying TheDragon from the inside. With her thanks to Sailor Moon, she proceeds to invoke an HeroicSacrifice to save the world.
** Then, Usagi further manages to top herself. Her staunch conviction that innocent little Hotaru should not die to save the world is so pure, she manages to summon a pure heart crystal strong enough to allow her not only to undergo the transformation she had forsaken by giving away the Grail, but to actually battle the BigBad and save Sailor Saturn from certain death, allowing her a second chance at life.
** It takes time, a WhatTheHellHero moment and a battle, but even the more cynical Outer Guardians come around to see things her way when they realize her methods DID bring the best results and that her kindness and love IS actually a tangible force, sufficient to repel evil: she not only defeated evil, she even made an ally out of the warrior of ruin.
* KiddieKid: At fourteen, she starts out as a carefree crybaby who loves childish things, just wants to have fun and can't keep up with the kind of schoolwork expected of her age. She grows out of it after she spends some time as Sailor Moon.
* KidHeroAllGrownUp: Turns from a childish crybaby in junior high, woefully unprepared for her tenure as a MagicalGirl, into the elegant, regal, powerful Neo-Queen Serenity of the utopian Crystal Tokyo. Even when she hasn't ascended, Eternal Sailor Moon (high-school age) is ''way'' more grown up than her past self. Her future daughter, Chibi-Usa, was especially shocked at the disparity between Usagi and Serenity.
* KindHeartedCatLover: With Luna as her loving mentor, she's this by default.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Not too bright but makes up for it with her good heart.
* KneelBeforeFrodo: After the reveal that Usagi is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity this happens a lot around her Guardians the most prominent moment being the end of the ''S'' season after Sailor Moon manages to defeat Uranus and Neptune with the two bowing towards their Princess and apologising for questioning her judgement.
* LadyAndKnight: With Mamoru and in her past life with Prince Endymion.
* LargeHam: The series is like a WorldOfHam, but Usagi is one of the hammiest. In the anime this while she was practicing her part for a play, Shingo lampshaded that she was being a real ham actress.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Usagi being the Moon Princess. Immediately after said reveal, the spoiler went public on covers and merchandise. Really, the anime's second closing song "Moon Princess" spoils this one ''before'' the reveal.
* LateForSchool: She is never on time for school. In fact, being late for school is one of Usagi's trademarks. It even becomes a plot point in the first arc of the manga, when Mamoru got kidnapped by the Dark Kingdom and Usagi awakens as Princess Serenity, she starts to feel less like herself. The fact that she goes to school early is treated as proof that she is acting out of character.
* LazyBum: She'd rather play video games and eat than study for tests. She even lampshades this when she's bewitched by [[MonsterOfTheWeek Ramua]] in the 9th episode of Season 1.
-->'''Usagi''': I have a lot of things to accomplish today. First off, I have to get home. Then, eat a pork bun. After that, finish playing my video game, take a bath, and then -- [[MotorMouth OHNO, LOOKWHATTIMEITISALREADY]]!
* LegacyCharacter: Usagi is destined to become the next Queen Serenity, while Chibi-Usa is destined to become the next Sailor Moon.
* LethalChef: Downplayed. What she cooks either looks bad but tastes good, or looks good but TastesLikeFeet.
* LetsGetDangerous: She'll usually drop her buffoonish behavior if someone she cares about gets threatened. This becomes more pronounced as time goes on.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Light feminine to Rei's dark feminine.
* LightIsGood: Purity goes with light in ''Sailor Moon'', and it becomes a common theme (most easily seen in the first anime's Super S season).
* LightningGlare: She and Rei do this to each other on occasion. She and Naru also do this in one episode.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Some of Rei and Usagi's arguments are petty like this in the anime, whether in or out of their superhero roles. Whenever the friend group meets up at Rei's house, there is a 99% chance that Rei will be telling off Usagi for snooping around her bedroom (and, in one instance, Rei tries to wrestle a comic book out of Usagi's hands in fear that Usagi would get tear stains all over the pages) or behaving "[[BuffySpeak too Usagi]]" and giving her second-hand embarrassment, but it's clear that the two girls are good friends, respect each other and would help each other out, no questions asked.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Though Usagi initially has a crush on Motoki, he sees her as a younger sister. She accepts this after she starts dating Mamoru.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Usagi seems to take after her father a lot more than her mother, especially in the 90s anime. Both are protective to their loved ones, lean towards the arts (Kenji's a photographer, Usagi likes to draw), and would rather get more sleep, which causes them both to run late in the morning. They're both prone to overreact and are less grounded than the rest of the family, and Usagi is implied to get her cooking skills from him. Meanwhile, Shingo takes more after their mother, since they're the more rational, down-to-earth ones in the family.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: It's pointed out that while Usagi's father initially doesn't like Mamoru very much the two of them are strikingly similar.
* LikesOlderMen: This seems to be her preference (much to her father's distress), since she's in an ongoing relationship with Mamoru but has also been attracted to Motoki and Haruka (though the latter [[WholesomeCrossdresser turned out to not actually be a man]]). That being said, contrary to popular perception perpetuated by the anime upping Mamoru's age, it is downplayed, since all of them are only 1-4 years older than her--and she ''has'' been attracted to people her own age.
* LineOfSightName: In Act 1 of the manga and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' newly-transformed Usagi stammers on introducing herself until her cat Luna {{Invoke|dTrope}}s this by meowing at the moon to prompt her.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch; Usagi seems to be this for ''all the Inner Guardians'', at least at first, who have tragic backstories and/or were treated as outcasts. With time they recover, but they still remain rather attached to Usagi.
* LongDistanceRelationship: During the ''Sailor Stars'' arc, Mamoru went to America to study, leaving Usagi behind for a large part of the series. (And then it turns out that [[spoiler: Mamoru actually was killed by having his Star Seed ''stolen at the airport''.]])
* LookBehindYou: She and Chibi-Usa try this on a Snow Dancer chasing them during the second movie. The Snow Dancer falls for it completely, and looks genuinely puzzled when she turns around and they aren't there anymore.
* LoonWithAHeartOfGold: A bit of a {{Cloudcuckoolander}} and very caring to everyone.
* LoserProtagonist: Especially in the anime. When she is not being the MagicalGirl who saves everyone, Usagi is a [[BookDumb poor student]] (it's a wonder she made it to high school by the time the Dead Moon Circus arc begins), [[CuteClumsyGirl clumsy]] and a crybaby.
* LovableCoward: Especially in the first season, where she is constantly dodging and getting scared easily by the monsters' attacks.
* LoveBubbles: A common sight with her, especially when Tuxedo Mask is around. In Act 1 of ''Crystal'', flat, prismatic bubbles appear in frame with Usagi along with a {{Gaussian|Girl}} filter as she and Mamoru share a sudden, lengthy HeldGaze on first meeting. After awkwardly breaking eye contact, she mentally notes her heart is still pounding.
* LoveFreak: Comes from her gaining power from ThePowerOfLove.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: In ''Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon'', Sailor Moon loves Tuxedo Mask so much that she's willing to destroy the world for him. [[spoiler: And does. Twice.]]
* LuminescentBlush
** She, Tuxedo Mask and the Inner Guardians find out that the child they've been looking after is Moon and Mask's KidFromTheFuture. The parents-to-be blush so deeply that [[HighPressureEmotion steam appears over their heads]].
** In Act 2 of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', Usagi blushes when she makes a mental note that her new acquaintance Ami is cute, and Ami, having been friendless, blushes whenever Usagi's affectionate, like when she hugs Ami effusively, tells her she's cuter when she smiles, and when she agrees to be friends.
* {{Lunacy}}: One of her powers.
* {{Lunarians}}: Reincarnated princess of a kingdom of Lunarians that was wiped out centuries ago.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:M-P]]
* MagicalGirl: One of the most famous and internationally well-known examples.
* MagicalGirlWarrior: Usagi/Sailor Moon is the TropeCodifier.
* MagneticHero:
** Ami, Rei and Makoto always had the power to be Sailor Guardians, but accepted to fight because Usagi befriended them.
** Minako became a Sailor Guardian [[Manga/CodenameSailorV a whole year before the others]] and initially joined the group because her mission at that point was to be Usagi's bodyguard and BodyDouble. It didn't take her long before becoming Usagi's best friend without even noticing.
** Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna started out standoffish and borderline antagonistic. By the time of the final arc/season they were part of the group after being impressed and befriended by Usagi.
* MamaBear: Woe betide whoever tries to harm her KidFromTheFuture. And her true love. And her friends. ''Especially'' in the case of Manga Usagi, who's a lot less forgiving than her anime counterpart.
* MartyrWithoutACause: When up against the DD Girls near the end of the first season, she was quick to offer her life or the Silver Crystal to keep them from killing her friends.
* MasterOfDelusion
** Naru blatantly tells Usagi to be careful before she goes off to fight the BigBad in R. Usagi tries laughing it off but it's obvious to the viewer that Naru already knows.
** In Sailor Moon S, Usagi goes for a drive with Haruka and Michiru, has the ''exact same conversation'' with them as she had with Uranus and Neptune a few episodes earlier, and even mentally superimposes Uranus's face over Haruka's, realising that they look exactly the same. She forgets all about this a few minutes later and it's a big shock when she eventually discovers that Haruka and Michiru are Uranus and Neptune.
* TheMatchmaker: In the anime, Usagi dresses up as an actual matchmaker to get Rei and Yuuichirou together. It doesn't work. Then, in ''S'', she persuades Naru and Umino to enter a love contest. Finally, fandom ratchets up her "love for all" mentality until she's trying to pair up everyone who has ever talked to her.
* MeaningfulName:
** Tsukino Usagi → tsuki no usagi → "rabbit of the moon" → MoonRabbit.
** Her English name "Serena" comes from "Serenity", the name of both her true mother and her own past and future self. It is also a reference to ''Selene,'' the Greek goddess of the moon and lover of the prince Endymion.
* MeetCute: Usagi and Mamoru meet when she accidentally hits him with a failing test she'd tossed over her shoulder. This repeated several times in the [[Anime/SailorMoon first anime]] with her hitting him in the head with flung shoes, maintaining the SlapSlapKiss dynamic they had for much of the first series. They even met again at the finale of the first series, after everyone has lost their memories, and yet she meets him again as the same stock footage of the test paper incident plays from the first episode - making this a ''re''-Meet Cute.
* MementoMacGuffin:
** Pictured on the main page: The star-shaped music box is a reminder of her link with Endymion and their past life together. At the end of the first season, [[spoiler: she takes it out and shows it to him (he was brainwashed and crazy at the time) as a last resort, pleading for him to remember who he was and how they loved each other long ago. It works, but the locket disappears and is never seen again afterwards.]]
** The manga has a small pocket watch (which is what was turned into the star locket) that Usagi got from Mamoru. During the revelation of [[ForegoneConclusion Usagi being the moon princess]], it plays backwards as Usagi regains her memories as Princess Serenity.
* MessianicArchetype: Sailor Moon is the one who can and will save the world.
* MindControlEyes:
** It happens to her while under the influence of "Wise Man."
** Although she isn't technically possessed, Usagi gets these when she turns into [[spoiler: Princess Serenity]] for the first time.
** Similar to the above, [[spoiler:Sailor Moon]] gets these at the climax of S, when [[spoiler:she forcibly manifests her heart crystal and transforms into Super Sailor Moon without the aid of the Grail]].
* MinorInjuryOverreaction: Usagi would cry after falling down on the sidewalk, whether it was on her face, knees or butt, in the early seasons of the 90's anime (keep in mind she's 14 years old).
* MinorInsultMeltdown: Any rude comment from [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Rei]] will have her burst into tears.
* MistakenForLesbian: In one episode, Michiru tells Rei that she and Usagi are close, just like her and her girlfriend Haruka.
* ModestRoyalty: Queen Serenity and her daughter have fairly simple dresses as anime royalty goes. Even their jewelry is understated: Neo-Queen Serenity's crown (which is more like a tiara in the manga) isn't excessive and that's about the most ornate thing any of them appears with, minus the scepters, of course.
* MoodSwinger: She can act serious one minute... then act silly and childish the next minute.
* MoonRabbit: An obvious nod to this legend. Her real name, Tsukino Usagi, is a phonetic pun on the term "Rabbit of the Moon" if split into words ("''tsuki no usagi''") though the kanji differs slightly. Her hair is intended to look like a rabbit's ears.
* MoralMyopia: She is [[ClingyJealousGirl possessive over Mamoru and gets defensive when he talks to other girls]], but she herself is perfectly willing to hit on other boys behind his back during their relationship. This is often [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by the other Guardians.
* MotorMouth: Usagi talks a lot and very quickly. Her mouth tends to get her into a lot of trouble.
%%* {{Mukokuseki}}
* MundaneUtility: Usagi tends to use the disguise pen for mundane things, such as turning into an adult to sneak into a bar or a camera woman to sneak onto a boat, much to Luna's horror. Strangely, each time she uses it for something mundane it ends up being someplace she needs to get into to stop the baddies, though it's possible she's used it off screen without this happening.
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: In the manga and ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', despite believing it impossible for [[NeverTheSelvesShallMeet past and future selves to meet]], Sailor Moon and Neo Queen Serenity do manage to briefly meet one another and thank each other for everything.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: The jewels in her buns let her sense when others are in danger. She senses Naru calling for help in the first act. And in the penultimate episode of the first season, she is able to sense when [[spoiler:Sailor Mercury]] dies; she bears witness to the other deaths but this one she wasn't present for.
* NaughtyIsGood: Start of the manga and anime in general. Despite being BookDumb, lazy, gluttonous, whiny and temperamental, Usagi is nonetheless a [[AllLovingHero compassionate]] NiceGirl who always goes out of her way to protect the Earth and her loved ones from danger as Sailor Moon.
* NeverGetsFat: Despite eating a lot and being lazy in general, she still remains slim. Played with in a couple of episodes where it is implied that she ''has'' put on a couple of pounds (albeit not enough to classify her as overweight) as a result of her poor diet and exercise.
* NiceGirl: One of the friendliest, most compassionate heroes. Even ''[[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Rei]]'' says she's this.
* NoHeroToHisValet: Sailor Moon is looked up to and relied on by many people around the world, especially Chibi-Usa before she finds out who Sailor Moon really is. That being said, the Guardians often make her the butt of their jokes, and often criticize Usagi for being lazy, naïve and ditzy.
* NoIndoorVoice: She has a habit of unnecessary yelling, either when upset or excited.
* NotAMorningPerson: She ''does'' wake up. Just not in time and not so easily.
* NotSoDifferentRemark:
** She and Chibi-Usa are more alike than they're willing to admit. At one point in ''Crystal'', the other characters lampshade how similar they are.
** In ''VideoGame/SailorMoonAnotherStory'', it is noted how Usagi and Sin are this way because both are driven by a need to keep their younger brothers safe.
* ObliviousGuiltSlinging: Inverted. When Usagi starts spending time with Makoto she is extraordinarily complimentary of all the things Makoto is usually uncertain about, including both her strength and her femininity. So it’s more like Oblivious Confidence Building.
* OcularGushers: They don't call her "Crybaby Usagi" for nothing, especially in the title of the first episode, and if you call her "odango-atama" (roughly translates to "dumpling/bun-head."), which she later embraces as a term of endearment, though only when it comes out of Mamoru's mouth.
* OddFriendship: With [[ShrinkingViolet Ami]]. They're about as opposite as they come (Usagi's carefree and extroverted, Ami's shy and studious), but Usagi is Ami's first real friend, and as the first two Guardians, their friendship becomes the start of something big.
* OfficialCouple: With Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask. They are the main canon romantic pairing of the series and the story generally centers on them.
* OffscreenCrash: In the Act 1 ColdOpen of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' this marks her impact at the foot of the stairs after an extended {{pratfall}} StaircaseTumble, accompanied by a ScreenShake while her mother winces.
* OlderAlterEgo: [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness In early chapters of the manga and the first few episodes of the 90s anime]], Usagi sometimes uses her [[TransformationTrinket transformation pen]] to age herself up as a disguise. She stops using it in that way once Ami and Rei join the team.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: In Episode 73, when Chibi-Usa [[NiceJobBreakingItHero steals her brooch and caused her friends to get kidnapped by Ruebus]], the normally goofy and forgiving Usagi becomes ''seriously enraged'' at Chibi-Usa and was on the verge of ''slapping'' her until Mamoru restrained her. Even Chibi-Usa [[OhCrap understood the genuine rage Usagi was feeling at that moment]].
* OppositesAttract: With Mamoru. She's lively, ditzy and ignorant and he's cool, calm and intelligent.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: A high school student who just happens to be a reincarnated princess ''and'' a Sailor Guardian.
%%* TheParagon
* ParasolParachute: In the first arc, Usagi uses a parasol to gently float down from a 4th floor balcony. As if that isn't bad enough, she had Tuxedo Kamen -- a young man -- hanging on to her during the descent. This is perhaps justified as the parasol was created as part of a magical disguise, so it could very well be magical itself.
* ParentChildTeam: With Chibi-Usa whenever they fight side by side.
* PhysicalGod: In the manga, since to recap, she can undo the mass destruction Metalia wrecked at the end of the first arc, can revive the dead, and destroy entire planets.
* PimpedOutDress: Her Moon princess dress, the disguise wedding dress in one episode, and another disguise dress to get into a party that even came with a ParasolOfPrettiness. And when Demande captures her, he sticks her in a gaudy-looking gown for GoGoEnslavement.
* ThePinIsMightierThanTheSword: Has a brooch which serves as both a Transformation Trinket and a holder for her Power Crystal.
* PinkGirlBlueBoy:
** Her aura and parts of her uniform and accessories are often colored pink, while Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask/Endymion is often drawn with blue highlights. The main color contrast between them is white and black, though, so it's downplayed.
** During the ModestyTowel scene in the HotSpringsEpisode, she and Shingo play it straight in their towel colors. In most of the franchise, though, green is Shingo's color of choice.
* PinkHeroine: All of Usagi's transformation sequences involve pink ribbons swirling around her. Her first, second, and fourth brooches are also heavily pink. Her standard uniform is actually equal parts [[PrimaryColorChampion red and royal blue.]], though it was often a ''pink'' shade of red. Her eternal form also has big pink puffy sleeves. And in the first manga artbook, Usagi is associated with the color pink. Some of her early designs also show her with pink hair. This was {{subverted}} as the series went on, as Usagi came to be associated more with white/silver while her future daughter becomes heavily associated with the color pink.
* PinkMeansFeminine: She usually wears red, white, blue, and yellow in her fuku, however her "aura" color appears to be pink, as whenever she's using an attack, pink is usually her main color. Her bow is also pink in [[Theatre/SeraMyu the musicals]] and [[Series/PrettyGuardianSailorMoon the live-action drama]].
* PlotSensitiveSnoopingSkills: A particularly JustForFun/{{egregious}} case. A number of one-shot characters fail to hide their innermost secrets from her, but she never notices her little brother's crush on Ami in the fourth season BeachEpisode.
* PluckyGirl: Usagi/Sailor Moon could be the TropeCodifier. She is incredibly optimistic, hopeful and determined.
* PocketProtector: Is forced to stab a BrainwashedAndCrazy Mamoru in the chest, and she's so traumatized that she attempts suicide... except he lived because the sword was stopped by the crystallized forms of the Shitennou, and she did too because the blade hit the pocket watch Mamoru given her.
* ThePollyanna: To a degree, in the anime.
* PowerGivesYouWings: Usagi's strongest, and final, forms as Eternal Sailor Moon, Neo Queen Serenity, [[spoiler:and her bared self that she uses in the final fight against Chaos]] all share one thing in common: the inclusion of wings.
* PowerMakesYourHairGrow: In the manga, her hair grows ''even more'' after she first transforms into Princess Serenity.
* PowerStrainBlackout: She usually faints or at least collapses and loses her Super form after using her Rainbow Moon Heartache attack in the S series, although that restriction on her Super form doesn't apply during [=SuperS=], probably because she's using a power source other than the Holy Grail in that series. She also has this problem in the first few episodes of Stars, when she first tries to become Eternal Sailor Moon, and like with [=SuperS=], the problem disappears once that becomes her default form when the Animamates start appearing.
* PowersViaPossession: While trapped in Nemesis without her powers, she gets them back by channeling her future self Neo Queen Serenity, who still sleeps at the Crystal Palace.
* ThePratfall: In the Act 1 ColdOpen of ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal,'' Usagi's status as TheKlutz is cemented when she manages to take a StaircaseTumble by losing her footing and falling on her rear down the last eight steps to her house's first floor, finishing with an OffScreenCrash.
* PrecisionFStrike: Not even Sailor Moon herself is safe from Viz's ObligatorySwearing policy, getting in a "You bastard!" shouted at one of the bad guys in episode 74.
* PrettyInMink: In a SickEpisode where Usagi is having a fever dream, she's on a date with Mamoru, and she's wearing a PimpedOutDress that has a neckline of white fur.
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: Went from a crybaby, wimpy schoolgirl to an able fighter in hand-to-hand combat, able to perform acrobatic feats (the least of which is leaping across rooftops), and wields world-destroying/saving power in the form of her [[FantasticNuke Silver Crystal]] and has successfully prevented TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt multiple times.
* PrimaryColorChampion: Sailor Moon's uniform consists of red (or pink-red), white and blue.
* PrincessClassic:
** Exaggerated as Princess Serenity in the 90s anime. Her entire personality seems to revolve around this trope to the point ''she is the trope''. Her and Endymion could easily replace Aurora and Philip up there. Actual royalty? Check. Innocence personified? The only vice she seems to have is a ForbiddenLove with Prince Endymion of Earth and that solely exists so Usagi and Mamoru can have a ReincarnationRomance. There's very little chance she would've been punished for breaking the law that Earth and Moon people couldn't interact. She is, of course, pretty with blonde hair almost long enough to reach the ground. Her clothes are SimpleYetOpulent and she has a small crown. While she isn't shy, she seems to be demure, polite, and courteous and is definitely helpless; it's why she has bodyguards and her PrinceCharming is knight-themed with a sword. She ends up dying (along with Endymion), but only for plot reasons; she could still be interpreted as TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth though. Her reincarnation is instead the one who gets the HappilyEverAfter. She's also a MessianicArchetype due to the anime implying that this is Usagi's most powerful form. [[spoiler:It seems like every important battle with the BigBad of the season has her transform into Serenity to beat them and save the Earth.]]
** Subverted in the manga and ''Crystal'', especially if your introduction to the character was the 90s anime. While the physical description still applies, her personality is the complete opposite. Princess Serenity here is a lot like Usagi: flighty, reckless, doesn't like school and will actively attempt to avoid her lessons, into boys, and generally lives in a dream world. Her and Endymion's relationship thus ceases to be her only vice, though the likelihood they'd be punished is still low since the "gods forbidding it" was always a paper-thin excuse; it just took on more meaning once Serenity had any semblance of personality stripped from her. She's still helpless and has bodyguards and a knight-themed PrinceCharming with a sword, but it's to emphasize how different she is from Sailor Moon, who's a strong fighter in her own right (actually stronger than her boyfriend and bodyguards put together) and how she fights alongside of them instead of being protected by them. She still dies, again for plot reasons, but instead of being TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth, she's painted as a tragic princess. [[spoiler:Also committing suicide isn't very Princess Classic-like. Takeuchi was instead going for a ''Romeo & Juliet'' vibe fitting with the manga's maturer tone.]] Also the manga implied that Endymion and Serenity were having sex, but didn't portray the act as in any way sullying her. As the 90s anime was clearly aimed at grade-schoolers, this part was obviously left out. It is Usagi/Sailor Moon, not Serenity, who is the MessianicArchetype in these versions and Sailor Cosmos is her strongest form (assuming Cosmos is just another form of Moon; if not then Moon's strongest form is Eternal Sailor Moon) while Serenity is her weakest, possibly even weaker than regular, ol' schoolgirl Usagi Tsukino (Usagi's kinda sheltered, but she's not ''that'' sheltered).
** Invoked in a {{filler}} episode of the 90s anime when Usagi went to "princess classes" in an attempt to be more like her past self due to feeling inadequate about being the reincarnated Moon Princess they had spent the past few episodes looking for. Of course, it turned out to be a trap set by the villain. [[FemininityFailure She fails]] [[EpicFail and in the process manages to out herself as Sailor Moon to the]] MonsterOfTheWeek (which changed nothing anyway). The entire point of Serenity being a perfect princess in this adaptation was so the contrast between her and Usagi [[PlayedForLaughs could be milked for all it was worth]].
* PrincessesPreferPink: It's generally assumed that while Usagi's image is associated with silver and white, all of her powers in the [[Anime/SailorMoon first anime]] result in huge pink blasts of light (if they aren't moon-shaped or rainbows), including her transformation sequences up until Eternal -- she's pink on the inside.
* PromotionToParent: Very weird variation, since the child she's taking care of is her own KidFromTheFuture.
* ProneToTears: She's very sensitive and it doesn't take much to make her cry, especially in the first episode of the series.
* PropheticNames: "Tsukino Usagi" is a Japanese homophone for "rabbit of the moon" (the Japanese equivalent of the Man in the Moon).
* ProtagonistPowerUpPrivileges: Sailor Moon is the first to receive new [[SpecialAttack Special Attacks]] and [[SuperMode Super Modes]]. In the anime, she is also the only one to reach the Eternal Form.
* AProtagonistShallLeadThem: She will become this when she rules as Neo-Queen Serenity.
* PseudoRomanticFriendship: In the 90s anime, Usagi and Rei show a somewhat low-key version of this in those quiet, sweet moments they're not acting like VitriolicBestBuds, particularly the original and ''R'' seasons. True to cultural expectations, these moments are less common (but not ''completely'' inexistent) as Usagi's relationship with her boyfriend Mamoru matures... and they reappear [[spoiler:when Mamoru falls victim to BusCrash (unbeknownst to them)]]. This is {{lampshaded}} by [[{{Troll}} Michiru]] who comments to Rei that her relationship with Usagi is just like Michiru's [[BattleCouple relationship]] with Haruka.
* PsychosomaticSuperpowerOutage: At one point, she loses the ability to use her Moon Tiara Action spell; it's because she subconsciously doesn't want to be Sailor Moon anymore.
%%* PuppyDogEyes
[[/folder]]

[[folder:R-S]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: In the manga, when the group finally meets Neo-Queen Serenity, she is physically 22 years old, but is really about ''923''.
* RedOniBlueOni: In the manga, live-action and ''Crystal'', she is the red oni, while her main foils (Mamoru, Rei, Shingo, etc) are all blue. Not so much in the first anime where most of her foils undergo and AdaptationPersonalityChange and become more emotional.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Usagi [[IJustWantToBeNormal just wanted to be normal]], only agreed to get powers in order to save her friend Naru, and even got out of having them once when she died at the end of the [[Anime/SailorMoon original anime]]'s first series. She never got out of it in the [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]], though she killed herself after being forced to kill her lover; they were ''both'' resurrected and she had to fight again immediately afterward.
* ReincarnationIdentifyingTrait: The reincarnation angle was driven into LateArrivalSpoiler pretty quickly, but one of the early hints that Usagi is a reincarnation of a moon princess was their similar twin-tailed hairstyles.
* ReincarnationRomance: She and Mamoru are were lovers in their previous lives as Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion.
-->'''Usagi to Mamoru''': ''Even if we're reborn again and again, I know that I'll meet you. And I know for certain that we'll fall in love... all over again.''
* RequisiteRoyalRegalia:
** Sailor Moon's first attack is throwing her tiara to target and eliminate the enemy. In Sailor Stars, after she becomes Eternal Sailor Moon and loses her tiara, she throws a pizza instead.
** As Neo-Queen Serenity, she also has a very regal-looking gown, and her Cutie Moon Rod has become her royal scepter.
* ResignedToTheCall: She goes through this during the first half of the FillerArc storyline in ''R''. After being resurrected following the fight with Queen Beryl, she's content as a normal school girl until the storyline's {{Big Bad}}s show up, forcing Luna to restore her memories and powers. Despite this, she's completely hesitant on being Sailor Moon, causing her powers to futz up before blinking out completely. It isn't until she encounters Queen Serenity once more that she's ResignedToTheCall.
* RidiculouslySuccessfulFutureSelf: Starts as a whiny crybaby struggling in school, ends up becoming the all-powerful ruler of the world.
* RudeHeroNiceSidekick: Inverted. She's the Nice Hero (a compassionate AllLovingHero) to Chibi-Usa's Rude Sidekick (a rude BrattyHalfPint who has a knack of belittling Usagi). Chibi-Usa does [[CharacterDevelopment get better]] after episode 73, though she still has the habit of messing with Usagi every once in a while.
* SaveTheVillain: Towards [[spoiler:Galaxia in both versions of ''Stars''. Especially notable for the manga, in which Galaxia was ''not'' a victim of DemonicPossession, and Usagi's selfless act of empathy ultimately [[HeelFaceTurn appeals to her better nature]].]]
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl:
** The Energetic Girl to Mamoru's Savvy Guy, only in the anime.
** Also shares this role with her brother Shingo. She is a GenkiGirl who can be overemotional, while Shingo is studious and mature by contrast.
* SayMyName: "MAMO-CHAAAAAAAN!" The characters do this a lot.
* ScrewYourself: In the manga, though more of a "kiss yourself" in this case. [[spoiler:Sailor Cosmos, the future Sailor Moon, kisses the modern-era Sailor Moon.]]
* ShellShockedVeteran: She is this in the first part of ''R'' after Luna restores her memories. Usagi starts having DullEyesOfUnhappiness about giving up her normal life as a struggling teenager, and seeing the Cardians nearly killing her friends. It affects her powers as well, causing her Moon Tiara Action to fail on her right when she needs it the most. Finally, when one Cardian breaks her brooch and she's drawn into a mystic world, she admits that she doesn't want to be a Guardian anymore but now there isn't a choice since they're all in danger of dying and she's the only one that can save them.
* ShipperOnDeck: Rei/Yuuichirou, Haruka/Michiru, Chibi-Usa/Helios, Motoki/Reika, Ami/Urawa ''and'' Naru/[[spoiler:Umino]] fangirl.
* ShipTease: She and Mamoru are an OfficialCouple across all versions, but she's got some teasing with Rei. For that matter, she gets a bit of it with several of the Sailor Guardians. Quite a few enemies get feelings for her, and in the final anime season, she and Seiya get lots of tease in Mamoru's absence.
* ShutUpHannibal: Delivers one of these to a few villains like Nephrite and Demande.
* ShyFingerTwiddling: Does this a lot.
* SiblingRivalry: With Shingo in the Dark Kingdom arc, then mostly with Chibi-Usa in later episodes.
* SiblingYinYang: Usagi is a sweet and cheerful idealist, very outgoing and surrounds herself with friends, but she's also totally unfocused, naïve and a terrible student. Shingo is a sensible kid with top grades, but often moody, snarky and cynical, and he seems to enjoy his own company. About the only common bond they have is a fondness for video games. Both [[CharacterDevelopment get better]], though.
* SickeninglySweethearts: In the opening phases of ''R'', she gets ''extremely'' cuddly around Mamoru. Mamoru at first allows it but tries to remain the adult in the relationship, and later [[spoiler:breaks up with her for plot reasons]].
* SignatureHeadgear: Her tiara and her Odangos with jewels in them. Her Super Sailor form adds barrettes, which she had in the manga from the start.
* SignificantBirthDate: Aside from being a Cancer (a sign that the Moon rules), June 30 sounds meaningful because it marks the end of the first half of the year and because it contrasts her best friend being born on New Year's Day.
* SignificantNameOverlap: She shares the same name as her KidFromTheFuture, Chibi-Usa, whose birth name is really Usagi. In her past life as Princess Serenity, she also shares her name with her mother, Queen Serenity.
* SkewedPriorities: And that's putting it ''mildly''.
* TheSlacker: She'd rather sleep and eat sweets than do school work.
* {{Slapstick}}: The most frequent victim of this. Over the course of the anime, she's accidentally kicked a closed door, had her face scratched by Luna, had SeizaSquirm invoked on her, and took countless volleyballs to the face, one of which knocked her tooth out.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: She tends to sleep a lot, usually in [[AsleepInClass in class]]. Her tendency to sleep in is why she is often LateForSchool.
* SmallStepsHero: Especially prominent in the Anime (Usagi was willing to get [[GoodIsNotSoft a bit rougher]] in the Manga), but while Sailor Moon is willing to perform HeroicSacrifice after Heroic Sacrifice herself, she's loath to see anyone ''else'' die to save the world. Despite [[FridgeLogic the would-be sacrifice often being every bit as willing and eager as she usually was]], ''and'' [[WeCannotGoOnWithoutYou when she knew full well that]] [[TemporalParadox Crystal Tokyo depended on her survival]].
* SmartJerkAndNiceMoron: She has this relationship with three people:
** Usagi's brother Shingo is a good student and likes to tease Usagi for being BookDumb. Meanwhile, as lazy and irresponsible Usagi is, she's a dim but sweet AllLovingHero.
** Usagi's KidFromTheFuture Chibi-Usa is a wise but rude and condescending BrattyHalfPint who regularly messes with her, while Usagi is the textbook example of DumbIsGood.
** Same goes with her and Rei. Rei is an intelligent JerkWithAHeartOfGold who enjoys belittling Usagi, while Usagi, as stated above, is a KindheartedSimpleton.
* SmarterThanYouLook: She's not the brightest kid around even when she applies herself, but she's not quite as dumb as people make her out to be. At least she passed her school entrance exams.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: She has attracted dark admirers for her beauty as Sailor Moon in the present or as Neo Queen Serenity in the future.
* TheSocialExpert: At the start of the series, she lacks both common sense and book smarts, but when it comes to dealing with people, she's a genius. It's the reason why she's the only one with real friends at the beginning, why she doesn't believe the rumors about the other Sailor Guardians before she meets them and why she brings and holds the team together.
* SolarAndLunar: Has a subtle theme with Mamoru. She's Moon Princess and though he's the ''Earth'' Prince, his guardian priest Helios is named after the ''Sun'' god and Queen Nehellenia, during her final moments in the manga, refers to Tuxedo Mask as the prince of Earth who was "protected by the Sun".
* SomethingAboutARose: In ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'', apart from being Usagi's favored FlowerMotif, ArtNouveau roses in multiple hues appear during her heroic moments. A spray of red roses caps off her TransformationSequence, and while she issues her InTheNameOfTheMoon speech, various shades of them frame her hand, pattern the floor and ornament the [[WeirdMoon crescent moon]] of her backdrop.
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: In the live action, Tuxedo Mask catches her falling down the stairs and asks if she's an idiot. She automatically retorts with "who are you calling an idiot" before realizing their dialogue mirrors the one between her and Mamoru after the latter saved her from being run over by a car. Cue dramatic unmasking.[[note]]One-sided, as Mamoru already knew her identity by that point.[[/note]]
* SonicStunner: She can turn her shouts into sonic wave blasts that can shatter glass and stun her enemies.
* SoProudOfYou: At the end of the Black Moon Clan arc, Neo Queen Serenity does this towards her daughter, reassuring her of her love and place within the Royal Family.
* StaircaseTumble: PlayedForLaughs as Usagi, frantic at being LateForSchool, loses her footing halfway down and performs an extended [[ThePratfall Pratfall]] the rest of the way, finishing with an OffscreenCrash.
* StalkerWithACrush: Downplayed, but in some versions, the first time that Usagi meets Rei, she follows her home on the bus because of how infatuated she is with her looks.
* StandingInTheHall: She receives this punishment from [[SternTeacher Miss Haruna]] for either being AsleepInClass or LateForSchool. It's even implied that the number of times she gets sent to the hallway [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome is why she is constantly receiving poor grades]].
* StarCrossedLovers: With Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask.
* StepfordSmiler: While she generally is a genuinely cheerful girl, she becomes a StepfordSmiler in ''Stars'', [[spoiler:to not let the others know that Mamoru hasn't contacted her after he left abroad]]. Even worse in the manga, because [[spoiler:Galaxia takes Mamoru's Star Seed ''right in front of her eyes'']] and she spends a good deal of the time blocking the event out of her mind.
* StockShoujoHeroine: The TropeCodifier, especially amongst MagicalGirl works. She's a 14-year old girl with long blonde hair in an odango hair style and wears a SailorFuku even when she becomes a high schooler. She starts out as a NaiveEverygirl and a bit of a BookDumb GenkiGirl. Usagi notoriously is a BigEater, especially of sweets, and has troubles with her weight. Usagi is big on ThePowerOfFriendship. Usagi's eventual boyfriend Mamoru has blue (or black) colour scheme, is OneHeadTaller than her, and is also older than her (In the manga/''Crystal'', he's a 17-year old in his second year of high school at the start of the series, while in the anime he's an 18-year old in his first year of college).
* StrawLoser: Compared to the rest of the characters, she is the most lazy, whiny, clumsy, and incompetent. This is [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] in several episodes.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Queen Serenity, her mother in her past life, looks like a silver-haired, OlderAndWiser Usagi.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy:
** She is BookDumb and an ActionGirl. Her love interest Mamoru is book-smart and mostly a NonActionGuy.
** She is also the Strong Girl to her brother Shingo's Smart Guy. Usagi is an ActionGirl who ends up rescuing her brother a few times, while Shingo gets good grades and makes fun of Usagi for being BookDumb.
* SuperGullible: In the first season finale, the DD girls create an illusion of a captured Tuxedo Mask, causing Usagi to run toward it. After the trap is exposed, they create the same illusion again... and Usagi does the same thing.
--> '''Sailor Mars''': Yeah, right. [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough Do you really think she's]] ''(Sees Sailor Moon running toward the illusion)'' ''stupid enough to fall for it '''AGAIN?'''''\
'''Sailor Moon''': But what if it really is him this time?
* SuperMode: Twice in the anime, both times they become permanent: Super Sailor Moon is one in S before becoming the Standard in [=SuperS=]. Eternal Sailor Moon acts as one during the Nehellenia arc of Sailor Stars before becoming the standard for the rest of the series.
* SupernaturallyYoungParent: Chibi-Usa looks no older than 8 or 10 after she starts becoming Sailor Chibi Moon (she is actually [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld is over 900]]), while Usagi who is 14. Chibi-Usa is actually Usagi and Mamoru's KidFromTheFuture.
* SuperScream: A less used secondary power, Sailor Moon can cry to the point where it becomes ultrasonic waves, [[GlassShatteringSound shattering glass]], [[SonicStunner stunning enemies]] and rendering weaker ones unconscious. Since her odango barrettes glow when she does this, its ambiguous whether the power is hers or a function of her jeweled odango covers.
* SuperSenses: Sailor Moon's odango covers can amplify her hearing which once caused her to pick up the sound of her friend Naru's cries for help.
* SweetTooth: Especially in the anime. Usagi loves to pig out on cakes.
* SympathyForTheDevil: More so in the 90's anime, wherein Usagi is a lot more unwilling to kill her opponents then the manga, which show a number of times where Usagi has genuinely cried for enemies that she has fought. The biggest examples in the 90's anime would be when Nephrite dies saving Naru's life, after [[spoiler:Demande protects Usagi at the cost of his own life]] and after hearing Nehellenia's DarkAndTroubledPast the last of which makes Usagi so upset [[spoiler:she's willing to allow Nehellenia the chance to kill her if it will make her feel better.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T-Y]]
* TakeAThirdOption: In the anime, she ''always'' uses ThePowerOfLove and ThePowerOfFriendship as an alternative. In the manga, not so much.
* TakingTheBullet: She does this twice to protect Chibi-Usa: once to save her from a plant this way in the R movie, and once as Neo-Queen Serenity to protect her from from the Black Moon Clan, which leaves her so injured that she has to be frozen in crystal to keep her alive.
* TechnicalPacifist: In the anime, she refuses to fight to kill when her enemy is an actual person. In the last season, [[spoiler:she refuses to fight both Nehelenia early on, and later refuses to fight Galaxia/Chaos even after being handed the Sword of Sealing by the Light of Hope. The craziest thing? Both times, ''it works''.]] Though she did end up killing a few more-or-less human enemies through the 90s anime. It was unintentional in a few cases, but not all of them.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: In terms of the approach they take to being a Guardian, Usagi is the Performer to Minako's Technician. Usagi initially slacked off on her training and shirked her Guardian duties when emotionally distressed. She refuses to let go of anyone she cares about, regardless of what that could possibly mean for the world. However, her compassion, idealism and determination to protect her loved ones endears her to the people around her and helps her achieve feats of unbelievable power. While Minako doesn't lack the passion for improvisational ability, she's had to sacrifice the people she loved and allow her old friends to abandon her. However, she trains her ass off, personally trains the other Inner Guardians (albeit in a covert manner), and her sheer badassery is the result.
* TemporalSickness: When Usagi and the Outer Sailors were standing in an elevator-like time portal in the manga, Usagi suddenly starts banging on the glass and complaining that she was going to puke. She never actually does though. And of course, Haruka has to go and make fun of her.
-->'''Haruka''': Not even Super Sailor Moon can battle the forces of gravity.
* TenderTears: Since Usagi is a cry baby most of the time her tearful jigs tend to be PlayedForLaughs. However, whenever something happens that is genuinely sad or moving, Usagi will cry these types of tears. It helps show how [[AllLovingHero big hearted she really is]] especially if the tears that fall are for [[SympathyForTheDevil villains.]]
* TerribleArtist: Much to her chagrin.
* ThemeNaming: Tsukino (Usagi) = Moon. "Tsukino Usagi" is a homophone for "Rabbit of the Moon" in Japanese. (While the kanji of her name literally translates into "moon field rabbit," ''no'' is also a particle that works much like the English "of.") The "rabbit" refers to a Japanese folktale which states that a rabbit lives on the moon pounding mochi.)
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Often used in her InTheNameOfTheMoon speech.
* ThisLoserIsYou: She's gentle, compassionate, selfless and friendly. She's also clumsy, lazy, childish and spoiled. And her friends and love interest, much as they love her, aren't shy about [[LampshadeHanging lampshading the trope]] frequently. Of course, with her being an AuthorAvatar, Naoko Takeuchi might actually be saying "This loser is ''me''."
* ThreesomeSubtext: Usagi fantasizes about Usagi + [[ScrewYourself Tuxedo Kamen + Moonlight Knight]], as well as Usagi + Tuxedo Kamen + Motoki.
* ToastOfTardiness: She's constantly LateForSchool, and she runs to school with toast in her mouth more than once.
* TooHungryToBePolite: She often gobbles down her food with her mouth open. During her "Princess Training", she loudly slurps her soup rather than eating it delicately like the other students.
* ToughLove:
** In Episode 18, after learning that her little brother Shingo had upset one of his classmates, she knocks some sense into him in order to make him apologize. She even threatens to tell their parents on him if he doesn't apologize. It works, as Shingo goes to Mika's house to apologize to her, though he was unable to talk to her due to her being cursed by Nephrite's magic.
** As Neo-Queen Serenity, she pulled this off on Chibi-Usa on a few occasions to help her grow more independent. Chibi-Usa initially mistook it for neglect when given FalseMemories by Wiseman, but she later finds out the truth.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Starts the series as the Tomboy to Naru's Girly Girl, despite not being ''that'' boyish and more of a GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak.
* TookALevelInBadass: Several, actually, both in the anime and in the manga.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the Black Moon arc of the manga and ''Crystal'', particularly toward Mamoru and Chibi-usa. She gets better by the end thanks to CharacterDevelopment.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Sweets. Especially cakes and ice cream.
* TraumaButton: First anime only. If her friends are in mortal danger or appear dead, she goes into HeroicBSOD or forcibly shakes them to not risk their lives for any reason whatsoever. [[spoiler:This is because she witnessed the DD Girls slaughtering them all, and the Guardians refused to let Usagi help them in the fight or bargain for their lives]]. She surrenders to Fiore in the ''R'' movie when they're captured and tortured in front of her, saying she can't go through that again. In the first episode of S, she nearly has a breakdown when it seems Rei has died, begging her PleaseWakeUp, and shook Minako when the latter said she wanted to have a pure heart worthy for the villains to take.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler:In the manga, she's had her love interest turned evil and had to kill him in the first arc, and in the last one, had to watch him and the rest of her teammates get killed by Sailor Galaxia. ''Then'' after that have to destroy the bracelet puppeted bodies Galaxia stuffed said teammates starseeds in.]] In the anime, [[spoiler:said love interest was BrainwashedAndCrazy and she only got to him after her friends were killed, and then HE died and so did she in the end. In the last one she believed said love interest was too busy overseas when he was actually dead, saw several of her teammates die at the hands of Galaxia, learned about the boyfriend's death, and was very traumatised by the cruel gambit that two teammates pulled to try to take down Galaxia (including the deaths of her remaining 'mates), only for them to fail and die too.]] Galaxia did not pull any punches in her attempt to break her ''in any continuity'', yikes.
* {{Tsundere}}: A [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] Type B. She's a really sweet and friendly girl, but when she has to deal with Mamoru, she reveals a short-tempered side, especially before she started dating him.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Neo-Queen Serenity is this in Crystal Tokyo. She took the position of queen of the world at the insistence of most of the population of Earth and proceeded to usher in an era of unparalleled peace and prosperity.
* UnsuspectinglySoused: Usagi has a bad habit of mistaking wine for juice and can become plastered/tipsy/inebriated/buzzed/sloshed/shitfaced with little effort.
* UseYourHead: Her grab attacks in SNES fighting games are headbutts.
* VictimOfTheWeek: In the 90s anime, not even Usagi was immune to this. In the third season Kaolinite targets her in civilian form for her pure heart crystal; in the fourth Hawk's Eye targets her for her Dream Mirror, and one of Palla Palla's schemes almost makes her this again (both times in civilian form too); in the fifth and final season, [[spoiler: Sailor Aluminum Siren discovers that she has a real Star Seed and targets her, and although her plan fails, Sailor Lead Crow learns of Sailor Moon's civilian identity through Siren's notes and successfully takes her Star Seed. Usagi is only saved by Sailor Tin Nyanko backstabing Lead Crow and by Princess Kakyuu appearing at the right time.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She will do anything to save her boyfriend.
* VitriolicBestBuds:
** With Rei in the anime. Exemplified best in Sailor Stars. Despite all their bickering throughout the series, it's Rei who Usagi rushes to when the Inner Guardians are about to die.
** She and Luna form a strong bond over the course of the series, but Luna is frequently frustrated with Usagi and both deliver AmusingInjuries to each other.
** Usagi and Chibi-Usa often fight over any little thing and complain about each other's faults, nut the two do love each other very much. They both are genuinely sad when ever Chibi-Usa has to return home, Usagi will do anything to protect her, and Chibi-Usa draws a picture of Usagi secretly naming it "the person I admire most".
** Her relationship with Shingo, just like most siblings. They bicker and annoy each other on a regular basis, but when things get serious, they worry about each other and will do whatever they can for one another. Usagi runs to his rescue when a youma knocks him and his friend Mika out, showing murderous intent. The original anime plays this trope up. Their arguments appear more in that series, but so does their close and caring relationship.
* VocalEvolution: Creator/KotonoMitsuishi's re-appearance as Usagi in ''Anime/SailorMoonCrystal'' sees her use a high-pitched younger voice that recalls her role as ''Anime/SuitePrettyCure''[='=]s Hummy.
* VocalDissonance: Linda Ballantyne's voice as her in the Cloverway dub makes her sound too mature, making her sound too much of an ''adult'' for an enthusiastic GenkiGirl.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Usagi is able to disguise herself as anything she chooses thanks to the Disguise Pen.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: The Wacky Parent to Chibi-Usa's Serious Child, though Chibi-Usa is technically Usagi's future daughter.
* WeightWoe: She goes through this crisis in episode 4 when she believes she has gained weight on her scale, so she decides to quit foods for a couple of days. Needless to say, [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome she becomes rather malnourished as a result]].
* WhatTheHellHero: In ''Sailor Moon R'', she does this to Chibi-Usa, coming close to beating the girl after the latter foolishly stole Usagi's brooch in an attempt to take her Silver Crystal back to the future, leading to the other Sailors to get captured by Rubeus when they tried to interfere and save her. Mamoru has to hold Usagi back from doing so.
* WideEyedIdealist: Usagi is very naïve and idealistic by nature, so much that she seems to be a dreamer with her head in the clouds. This is mostly in the 90's anime, though.
* WillNotBeAVictim: After her everything the Black Moon Clan put her through, she has had enough and fights back.
* WingdingEyes: Happens on occasions, most noticeable with the heart eyes Usagi displays when meeting Tuxedo Mask, and then again when seeing Rei for the first time.
* WorkingThroughTheCold: In an episode where all the Guardians except Venus have the flu, she still fights, though she's almost too weak to defeat the monster.
* WorldHealingWave: At the end of the first season, she uses her crystal reverse the damage by the Dark Kingdom and revives herself and her companions. When she ascends as Neo-Queen Serenity, she does it again after some apparent world freeze/disaster.
* WorldsMostBeautifulWoman: As Princess Serenity and Neo-Queen Serenity.
* WorldsStrongestWoman: As Eternal Sailor Moon, she manages to claim this title from Sailor Galaxia after beating her.
