[[folder:The Crood Family in General]]
* AllCavemenWereNeanderthals: They're the stereotypical neanderthal-esque cavemen with ape-like, bulky, [[TopHeavyGuy top-heavy physique]] and flat foreheads. By contrast, Guy (and the Bettermans in the sequel) are modern humans with more slender bodies.
* BadassFamily: They're a family of cavemen who are, from baby Sandy to elderly Gran, capable of defending themselves from and outwitting or outfighting nearly everything they come across.
* BadassNormal: Each of the Croods, from Grug down to Sandy and even Thunk, can hold their own physically with most animals and are much stronger than they look, mostly due to having to literally fight other creatures for food each day.
* ABoyAGirlAndABabyFamily: Thunk is the boy, Eep is the girl and Sandy is the baby.
* ElementalMotifs: Fire. They are introduced to fire (due to Guy) in the first film. And while fire can be a symbol of danger (something Grug fears above all else), it can also be a symbol for life; this is the character arc of the family in the first film (especially Grug's) -- that while new discoveries can lead to danger it's important to ''live''.
* LastOfHisKind: The Croods are the last surviving caveman family.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween:
** Out of the Crood children: Thunk doesn't have a mean bone in his body, Sandy is a WildChild who is prone to trying to eat her family, especially Thunk, and Eep is way tamer than Sandy but quite the rebellious type.
** The family as a whole: Ugga and Thunk (nice), Gran and Sandy (mean), and Grug and Eep (in-between).
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: The Croods ‘’still’’ adstain wearing shoes in the sequel and television series, showing minimal discomfort mostly.
* PrimalStance: They have a hunched posture and use their long arms for knuckle-walking quite often, to emphasize their primitive nature. Taken to the extreme with Sandy, who is RunningOnAllFours all the time.
* UnskilledButStrong: As befits their name and caveman status, they majorly rely in their strength. However, circumstances require them to [[CharacterDevelopment learn different types of skills to survive.]]
* UseYourHead: The family members often use headbutts to take out predators.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Grug]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/691230155698cbf5ee6c6fd1fb5c35aa.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/NicolasCage (movies), Dan Milano (''Dawn of the Croods''), Kiff VandenHeuvel (''Family Tree'')

The patriarch of the Crood family.
----
* AesopAmnesia: Downplayed. In the first film, Grug starts out treating Guy's presence among his family with hostility, both because his "modern" ideas contradict the "new things are bad" philosophy he's used to keep everyone safe and [[DatingWhatDaddyHates a desire to keep Eep away from boys]]. By the end of the film, he accepts him as a member of the family and seems to approve of him and Eep's relationship. In ''A New Age'', he just barely tolerates them being together, but still has trouble accepting Guy as an official part of the family, thinking that he'll break up the pack in his desire to run off with Eep for their own "Tomorrow". By the end of the film, he accepts the idea of Guy and Eep starting a life together and even calls him "son." By the start of ''Family Tree'', he goes back to barely tolerating Guy, though the show doesn't focus on it as much.
* BerserkButton: Having his position as leader of the family threatened.
* ButtMonkey: Bad things happen to him left and right.
* CarpetOfVirility: He's so hairy that when he goes shirtless, Phil believes he's still wearing his pelt.
* CharacterDevelopment: Grug starts off as someone who doesn't believe in trying anything new and sticking to the rules. [[spoiler:Near the end, he learns that trying new things aren't necessarily dangerous and he shouldn't just let fear keep him from trying them.]]
* EurekaMoment: When he realizes that he shouldn't be asking himself what Guy would do, but rather what ''he'' would do, and learns how to come up with ideas.
* FantasyForbiddingFather: Repeatedly warns his family, especially Eep, about the dangers of trying new things.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic/Choleric
* HappilyMarried: With Ugga.
* HiddenDepths: [[spoiler:Throughout the film, Grug is shown painting on cave walls, and is better able to make a puppet show fear than Guy is. The credits reveal that, now he doesn't have to spend every waking moment protecting and feeding his family, Grug takes the time to develop his artistic side, creating a gallery of small paintings using multiple colors and putting on a puppet show for Sandy.]]
** While his "ideas" at first are often... ''strange'' they're more incomplete than downright wrong. For example, his wooden "Shades" closely resemble the bone sunglasses used by the Inuit people, just missing the little eye slit, and he sorta-invents the wheel with his "Ride". He also credits his ideas not to his brain, since he doesn't have one, but to his stomach, which at first sounds ridiculous, then you remember [[FridgeBrilliance gut feelings]] are a thing.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He was actually correct when he said that "fire is not a plaything".
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Incredibly bossy and is incredibly set in his ways, and especially does not like Guy. But everything he does is to protect his family and keep them safe.
* KnightInSourArmor: Doesn't really believe that the world is as beautiful as Guy points out.
* LightningBruiser: The Croods have survived where the other cavemen families died out purely because of Grug's strength, and the hunting scene shows he's got speed to match.
* PapaWolf: It doesn't matter if you're a weird cat/owl hybrid thing, and multicolored sabertooth cat or even a new and more civilized cave person. If you threaten Grug's family, indirectly or not, ''he will take you down''. [[spoiler: At the end of the film, even resigning himself to oblivion to save his family, the first thing he does when he hears his daughter call for help is to ''invent a flying machine'' just to get to her. This is one dad that won't even let the apocalypse stop or threaten his family.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: The world he lives in is full of horrible blatant and active dangers that are a threat to the safety of his family, explaining his paranoid and overprotective behavior.
* ShipperOnDeck: While he spent a good portion of the movie trying to keep Guy and Eep apart, [[spoiler:he finally gets over it and starts to ship them, as evidenced by the cave painting he has of them holding hands together.]]
* StoutStrength: Really fat and also really strong.
* TeamDad: The patriarch of the family, Grug's every thought and action is towards keeping his family safe and fed.
* ThereWasADoor: He seems to struggle with the concept of...walls.
* TopHeavyGuy: Grug has body proportions similar to a gorilla, with massive shoulders and arms, but really short legs.
* YouAreWorthHell: [[spoiler:He cheerfully throws his family across the ravine near the end of the film, knowing he couldn't follow them and that he was basically left alone on an exploding continent. He makes it back to them, though.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Eep]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eep_crood_7.png]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/EmmaStone (movies), Stephanie Lemelin (''Dawn of the Croods''), Ally Dixon (''Family Tree'')

The impetuous and rebellious daughter of Grug and Ugga. She is constantly curious and wants to live a life beyond the confines of her cave.
----
* ActionGirl: She's strong and tough, and she loves a good adventure.
* AmazonianBeauty: Eep has a robust build, with broad shoulders and thick arms and the strength matching those, but also manages to look [[NubileSavage pretty]].
* ArtificialLimbs: [[spoiler: The second film reveals she lost a little toe and replaced it with a peanut. She kept it a secret, till it becomes a ChekhovsGun.]]
* BigSisterInstinct: Towards Thunk in the TV series.
* BrattyTeenageDaughter: Initially an aloof and angry teen, but she grows out of it by the end of the film.
* FieryRedhead: Eep has red hair and is quite aggressive and adventurous as she wants to visit the outside world the most. She gets the fitting Thunder Sister title of Fire Heart.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Melancholic
* LeParkour: She enjoys dangerous stunts.
* LikeParentLikeChild: Wanderlust aside, Eep is a ''lot'' like Grug. She's probably the most capable physically after Grug, and when they're on the same page the two make a great team, as shown in the beginning of the film.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: In the sequel, since falling in love with Guy, Eep is so smitten that she wants to be with him.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: The Masculine Girl (aggressive and rough) to Guy's Feminine Boy (not really feminine but is considerably more soft-spoken than Eep).
* NubileSavage: It's a tradition of caveman movies, after all.
* PluckyGirl: Brave and tough.
* OfficialCouple: With Guy in the sequel.
* SignificantGreenEyedRedhead: To show how, unlike her family, she wants to try new things and explore the world outside the cave.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She quickly develops feelings for the inventive, funny, and helpful Guy.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Her diary entries have many drawings of her and Guy surrounded with pink hearts.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: With Guy. She's a Neanderthal, with enough strength to wrestle creatures five times her size, while he is a Cro-Magnan, who knows how to make fire and always has a new idea to try out.
* YouthfulFreckles: Her face and body are covered in freckles to symbolize her rebelliousness and attitude.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Guy]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guy_5.png]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/RyanReynolds (movies), Dominic Catrambone (''Dawn of the Croods''), Darin Brooks (''Family Tree'')

A nomad who has been on his own for a long time. Intelligent and resourceful, Guy uproots the Croods when he tells them about "The End."
----
* AmazonChaser: Eep is almost the same height of Guy, [[BigBeautifulWoman possibly twice his weight]], [[LightningBruiser impossibly fast and nimble]] and [[ActionGirl more than capable of kicking his ass]] (and does so repeatedly). Guy is absolutely fascinated with her.
* BrainyBrunette: Compared to the Croods, he's competent and knows how to survive in a way that doesn't just devolve into violence and paranoia.
* ButtMonkey: He gets his fair share of slapstick.
* CloudCuckooLander: Guy's been on his own for a loooong time.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: [[spoiler:He reveals to Grug, while they're in a tarpit, that his family died when he was younger.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: The reason Guy is a wanderer, with only Belt as company is [[spoiler:his family died from sinking in a tarpit.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: If you're the smartest of a group of uncivilized cave people, it pays to be this.
* TheEndisNigh: Predicts the shifting tectonic plates as an apocalyptic event he calls "The End.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Leukine/Phlegmatic.
* HairstyleInertia: As shown in the second film, Guy has sported the same hairstyle since he was a child.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: In the sequel, since falling in love with Eep, Guy is less inventive and more focused with macking on Eep.
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Feminine Boy (not really feminine, but is considerably more soft-spoken than Eep) to Eep's Masculine Girl (aggressive and rough).
* MeaningfulName: "Guy" is another term for identifying someone as a man.
* MrFanservice: He walks around shirtless showing off his lithe and toned body.
* NiceGuy: Is a polite, helpful, and heroic ''guy''.
* NobleBigot: He used to think Neanderthals were savage brutes, although he was not aware Eep was one when he first met her. But throughout the film he manages to bond with all the Croods.
* OfficialCouple: With Eep in the sequel.
* OnlySaneMan: Mainly due to being more mentally advanced than the other Croods.
* PrettyBoy: Thanks to his fine features.
* TheSmartGuy: No pun intended, but he is more intellectual than the Croods.
* TookALevelInDumbass: This happens in the second film. In an unusual variation, he doesn't get more ''stupid'', just more dependent on Phil's rules and regulations instead of relying on his own instincts.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: With Eep. He is a Cro-Magnan, who knows how to make fire and always has a new idea to try out while she's a Neanderthal, with enough strength to wrestle creatures five times her size.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Never wears a shirt in the entire movie.
* WeakButSkilled: He is not as strong as the Croods, but he more than makes up for it with his intelligence and creativity, making and using various inventions, coming up with ideas, and eventually discovering how to make fire.
* WouldHitAGirl: Guy shows no qualms about poking Eep with a piece of wood or biting her when they first meet.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ugga]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/07f5e7eb09e15deefd7b9b992c294470.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/CatherineKeener (movies), Creator/CreeSummer (''Dawn of the Croods''), Amy Landecker (''Family Tree'')

The matriarch of the Crood family.
----
* ActionMom: Being a mother of three doesn't stop her from being strong and tough. She gets the Thunder Sister title of Blood Horn.
* DeadpanSnarker: More so in the sequel.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Later on in the film, she has her own idea, and uses it to protect herself, her mother, and Sandy from giant carnivorous flowers. This is a turning-point for Ugga as she literally and figuratively starts letting her hair down and puts the old ways her family followed (''"Never leave the cave! New is always bad; never not be afraid!"'') behind her.
%% * FourTemperamentEnsemble: Phlegmatic/Melancholic
* HappilyMarried: With Grug.
* LettingHerHairDown: An accident example: [[spoiler:When escaping from man-eating plants with Sandy and Gran, her hair comes loose after taking off her costume.]]
* MamaBear: Whenever there's trouble, her motherly instincts will take over, and she will do whatever she can to fix it.
* NiceGirl: A warm, motherly figure.
* OpenMindedParent: {{Downplayed}}. Ugga is a little more open-minded than her husband, Grug, but keeping the family safe stops her from trying new things like Eep does.
* TeamMom: She's the caregiver of the family, making sure everyone is clean and healthy.
* WomenAreWiser: Is a lot calmer and more rational than her husband. That said, she also has her stupid moments, such as when she's completely mesmerized by fire and throws a giant corncob into it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Thunk]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8c898dd9f2c312b45f27b3fcecaba9b8.png]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/ClarkDuke (movies), AJ Locascio (''Dawn of the Croods'', ''Family Tree'')

Grug and Ugga's son. A lovable but easily scared, and not all that intelligent boy.
----
* {{Acrofatic}}: Quite fast for a stocky guy.
* ButtMonkey: Thunk has lots of AmusingInjuries. Not quite as bad as Grug though.
* CharacterDevelopment: At the beginning of the film, Thunk is very terrified of everything. He gets somewhat better over the course of the film, [[spoiler:then at the very end, when the Croods are looking over a whole new land and Grug says they should go, Thunk is the ''first'' to head down the hill. He certainly came a long way.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He may be a cowardly neanderthal, but he is still a Crood. If the opening scene of the first film is to go by, he is just as strong as the rest of his family.
* TheDitz: He's not very bright on how to handle something new.
* DumbassTeenageSon: Ugga comments on his intellect, saying, “I don’t think Thunk will ever catch up. We love him."
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine
* IronicName: His name is an unusual conjugation of "think", which is something he's not very good at.
* KindheartedSimpleton: Thunk's a sweetheart, which makes up for his lack of rudimentary intelligence.
* LovableCoward: He's a big scaredy cat when it comes to something new, but a Nice Guy who cares about his loved ones dearly.
* MrImagination: "The First Picture Show" is about how he's the only person in the valley who makes up stories. They at first decry him as a liar befire getting the idea of fiction as entertainment. He entices everyone with his shadow puppet theater about [[HerCodenameWasMarySue Hunk]] and his rainbow colored Bear Owl companion. After dealing with the fallout of a rabid fandom, he inspires everyone else to make up their own stories for fun.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: No matter how scared he is, Thunk will follow his father's lead to the letter. So Thunk deciding to go with Guy's plan later on, really sets the stone on how Grug's ways aren't working anymore.
* TheOneGuy: He's the only male in the Thunder Sisters.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Thunk resembles his father's looks with his short brown hair and prominent cheekbones.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gran]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b00562c37e6ab9e3c87aaacb8055d973.jpg]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/ClorisLeachman (movies), Creator/LaraineNewman (''Dawn of the Croods''), Artemis Pebdani (''Family Tree'')

Ugga's mother and Grug's mother in law.
----
* BaldHeadOfToughness: In the second movie, it's revealed she's bald, wearing an animal named Wigasus as a wig. She's also revealed to be a tough female warrior as the leader of the Thunder Sisters.
* BaldOfAuthority: Downplayed as she wears a wig to hide it, but she is completely bald under her wig and is the leader of the Thunder Sisters.
* CaneFu: Gran handles a tall twisted cane in her hand.
* CatchPhrase: ''"Still Alive!"''
* ChainmailBikini: When she removes her crocodile skin pelt in the second movie, she's revealed to wear turtle shell underwear underneath, befitting the female warrior image of the Thunder Sisters.
* CoolOldLady: Snarky and strong. She has the Thunder Sister title of Queen of Wimmens.
* DeadpanSnarker: As per usual for a character voiced by Cloris Leachman.
* {{Flanderization}}: In the first film, she's a CoolOldLady that [[ObnoxiousInLaws enjoys pushing her son-in-laws buttons]], with shades of TheSocialDarwinist mindset done for BlackComedy. ''Dawn of the Croods'', ''A New Age'' and ''Family Tree'' play up the "Social Darwinist" side, making her a cranky [[NeverMessWithGranny badass]] from a more barbaric time who sees her family's domesticity ([[DeliberateValuesDissonance at least by caveman standards]]) as a sign of weakness (which again, is PlayedForLaughs).
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Stubborn and mean to her family and the people around her, especially Grug, but she's a lot more loyal and braver than one would think.
* MadeOfIron: She is seen in the credits of the second film bearing a six-pack and daring monkeys to hit her, and they are ''refusing''.
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: She's the oldest of the Croods, and the smallest apart from Sandy, who's a baby.
%%* NeverMessWithGranny: Seriously, don't.
* ObnoxiousInLaws: To be fair, Grug isn't all that pleasant to be around either. The two of them often joke about wishing for the other's death.
* ScrewPolitenessImASenior: A grandmother with a wry sense of humor - especially [[ObnoxiousInLaws to the expense of her son-in-law]].
* TheSocialDarwinist: PlayedForLaughs. A firm believer in natural selection, Gran doesn't discriminate in who gets selected for what -- especially if it means she gets selected to eat.
* UnnamedParent: She only goes by "Gran".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sandy]]
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42bd7daa8aef2cc3e7a6a593869ed8c6.jpg]]

-> Voiced by: Creator/GreyDeLisle (''Dawn of the Croods''), Kailey Crawford (sequel), Dee Bradley Baker (''Family Tree'')

The hyperactive youngest Crood. Less of a child, and more like an animal.
----
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: The youngest of the Croods, being four-years-old.
* DaddysGirl: Sandy is quite close to Grug. In fact, [[spoiler:her first word was "Dada".]]
* FieryRedhead: Has reddish hair and is quite energetic.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: Sanguine/Choleric
* GenkiGirl: A more violent example than most.
* GirlishPigtails: She has two pigtails secured with millipedes.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: She is comforted by Krispy Bear, which was formally Eep's.
* OddNameOut: Ironically the most feral of the cast is the only one with a normal name.
* RunningOnAllFours: Out of her family, Sandy does this the most since she's the most feral.
* TheSpeechless: Mostly speaks in grunts and growls.
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: Besides the difference in eye color, Sandy resembles her older sister, especially through the red hair and peachy skin.
* WildChild: The most feral of her family, as well as the youngest. She gets the Thunder Sister title of Seeker.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Belt]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e9474662ea060420beb8b9bf4f1eecea_8.jpg]]

Guy's pet sloth and only friend.
----
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: Although he's the most normal-looking of all the animals, he still has reddish-brown fur, opposed to the dull grey fur real-life sloths have.
* AmplifiedAnimalAptitude: He understands human speech, can craft tools following Guy's instructions, and can even play music!
* AnimalStereotypes: Averted. For a sloth, he is quite active.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's a very nice and helpful sloth, but when it looks like Gran is about to eat him, he very readily pulls out a knife on her which Guy warns he will not hesitate to use.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Dun dun DUUUUUNNN!" Used to emphasize significant moments.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Implied. The second film shows a young and orphaned Guy finding a young Belt, with no signs on his family.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Belt has big, blue eyes and is a friendly, loyal sloth.
* MeaningfulName: He's called ''Belt'' because he keeps Guy's pants up. When they were younger, he rested on Guy's forearm and acted as a lookout, Guy considering calling him ''Watch'' then.
* NonHumanSidekick: Serves as the faithful sidekick of Guy.
* OnlyFriend: Belt was Guy's only companion for most of his life.
* PaleFemalesDarkMales: He has darkish red fur in contrast to Sash's light pink color.
* ShipperOnDeck: Belt ships Guy and Eep and tries his best to bring them together. He starts off small by pulling the two closer together when they're near each other to eventually throwing flowers around trying to get the two together.
* UndyingLoyalty: Even when Guy is about [[spoiler:to be drowned by tar, Belt stays with him.]]
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: InUniverse. Guy initially considered naming him "Watch".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chunky]]

The Crood family's pet macawnivore and ride.
----
* CowardlyLion: A massive predator who's dead-afraid of the dark.
* GentleGiant: Though initially he acted like a predator, trying to eat the Croods, once they tame him he starts acting very friendly, allowing them to ride on his back.
* MegaNeko: He is an extremely large cat who is big enough for the Croods to ride on.
* MixAndMatchCritters: Downplayed; he's mostly a sabre-toothed cat, but he has the coloration of a parrot.
* PantheraAwesome: A giant sabre-toothed cat with vibrant, parrot-like colors.
* UndyingLoyalty: Once befriended by Grug, he becomes very loyal to him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Douglas]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1c4ce3ecfdc281534eb1f9e0a71e267a.jpg]]

Thunk's pet crocopup.
----
* ArtEvolution: In the sequel, he is recolored a dark purple and sports several black spots on his body.
* BigFriendlyDog: Acts like one, playing fetch with Thunk and giving friendly licks.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler: Drama is downplayed. Is believed to be dead after rolling over off the edge of a tree. Later when Grug tries to escape the final eruption with a makeshift aircraft, Douglas appears randomly and joins him.]]
* MixAndMatchCritters: Part crocodile, part dog.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Thunk. Even after getting separated from him, he still carries the rock Douglas used to play catch with him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Bear Owl]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/92c4adad_8fcb_4111_b662_e3c60900e7dd.jpeg]]

A recurring predator that hunts the Croods in the first half of the movie.
----
* AbnormalLimbRotationRange: Being part owl, it can swivel its head 270 degrees.
* BearsAreBadNews: It is a ferocious animal that has the muscular body of a bear.
* MixAndMatchCritters: It has the powerful legs of a bear with the eyes and brow crests of an owl. It also has a lean body and a long tail like a big cat.
* OminousOwl: It has the fierce stare of an owl and is a relentless predator.
* StarterVillain: It is the main predator hunting the Croods for the first half of the movie until Chunky takes over that role for the rest of it.
* SuperPersistentPredator: Zigzagged; It goes after the Croods in the egg chase at the beginning, and even tries waiting outside their cave until night before being distracted by Guy’s fire in the distance. When their cave collapses the next day, it chases after them once more before they fall off the cliff. However, it stops chasing them at this point in the movie and never appears again.

Eep's best friend who is obsessed with her.
----
* CloudCuckoolander: She is an odd individual with a few odd characteristics. Nonetheless, she is Eep’s closest friend.
* TheDitz: Not as much as Thunk, but she can be quite spacey on top of being odd.

The toughest caveperson in Ahhh! Valley and Grug's boss.
----
* AbusiveParents: She won't hold back on threatening her own daughter if she doesn't obey her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Amber can be abrasive and aggressive, but she will help the Croods if they have a problem.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Amber speak like this.

The Croods' conceited neighbor who is convinced he is the smartest caveman in Ahhh! Valley. He often butts heads with Grug.
----
* DirtyCoward: He'll run away from any unpleasant situation at the drop of a hat.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Snoot has ''quite'' a high opinion of himself.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He may be an arrogant, whiny DirtyCoward, but deep down he cares about his family and others.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Squawk]]

The mean-spirited "teacher" of Ahhh! Valley. Takes great pride in tormenting his "students" and setting them off on dangerous quests for "homework" (his dinner).
----
* {{Jerkass}}: Possibly the biggest one in the valley. [[ApatheticTeacher He cares less about the "students" he endangers]] and [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk more about the food he wants for his stomach]].
* LargeHam: He just loves to chew the scenery. Being voiced by Dee Bradley Baker helps too.
* SadistTeacher: He gets his kicks from tormenting his students.

[[folder:The Betterman Family in General]]
* ElementalMotifs: The Bettermans represent water, in contrast to the Croods and their experience with fire. The family wears aqua blue, their residence contains a cave of geysers, Hope gets the Thunder Sister title of Bog Water, and Phil used water to create his farm and treehouse [[spoiler: which he stole from the Punch Monkeys]].
* {{Foil}}: The Bettermans act as this towards the Croods with their civilized and refined ways.
* WeakButSkilled: They can build and arrange things great to get round danger and obstacles, but in terms of direct combat aren't too helpful. [[spoiler: Phil is this more than his wife and daughter, though.]]
[[/folder]]

The patriarch of the Betterman family.
----
* ArbitrarySkepticism: [[spoiler: Despite the world of big, bad animals Phil doesn't believe the Punch-Monkeys' have a monster problem. He later learns he was very wrong.]]
* AwesomeButImpractical: In ''Family Tree'', a lot of his ideas and inventions are wrought with redundancies, are overly {{complex|ityAddiction}} or are overthought. In "Parental Stridence", his solutions to people reaching across the dinner table include a giant rock (as a preventive measure), a miniature ballista and a line of ants to carry dishes around. In "Skate or Dawn" he reinvents Guy's [[SimpleYetAwesome rollerlog]] into a tower on wheels which fails to properly gain and traction and falls apart instantly.
* {{Foil}}: To Grug. Both want to protect their family, but employed different ways to go over it.
* HappilyMarried: With Hope [[spoiler: though he does keeps secrets such as his man-cave and the mysterious banana-eating monsters]].
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: He's basically under the impression that he's smarter than anybody who's not him or his immediate family. A lot of the sequel's problems turn out to be because of this mindset, and his attempts to assert his intelligent dominance over the punch-monkeys only turn things FromBadToWorse.
* LeanAndMean: The skinniest of his family and shown to be both smug and arrogant.
* RedOniBlueOni The calm, skinny and snobbish Phil is the Blue Oni to Grug's rough, soft-hearted, and muscular Red Oni.
* ThinkingTic: Phil holds his palms together over his lips when listening.
* {{Yuppie}}: Phil enjoys bragging about how "through higher thought" he diverted a river to run through his farm and grow lush vegetation.

----
* ButtMonkey: She suffers some misfortune when traveling with the remaining Croods to find Grug, Phil, and Guy. Being frozen, for one thing
* TheFinickyOne: She tries to keep things in order whether they should be or not and tends to repress her feelings. She later learns to loosen up.
* HappilyMarried: With Phil, though it's not without its issues.
* {{Housewife}}: Hope is very concerned with keeping her treehouse clean and making baskets of soaps, snacks and neck-pillows.
* HartmanHips: Only character that has them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She may be a bit arrogant and snobbish, but between the scheming and subtle insults Hope does has aunt-like love for Guy and treasures her daughter above all else. Later, she grows to accept the Croods after they save her and Dawn.
* MsFanservice: She is the most attractive female seen so far.
* SirSwearsALot: Her mental breakdown opened a flood of insults she was holding back on the Crood kids and gysters' blasts covered some adjectives.
* StepfordSmiler: Ugga notices Hope to grip the 'travel basket' tightly while they talk about the Croods' stay.

Phil and Hope's daughter and only child. She is a shy girl who dreams of exploring the world outside the wall.
----
* ActionGirl: Becomes this during her time with Eep. She gets the Thunder Sister title of Sister Sunset.
* BaitAndSwitch: At first, her connections to Guy mean she may be the one for him. [[spoiler: But Guy chooses Eep, with no hard feelings from Dawn.]]
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Dawn quickly bonds with a spider-wolf pup by simply being kind and patient.
* TheHeart: Dawn genuinely likes the Croods, especially Eep, and gently explains to her arrogant mother how Hope's actions and words have been rude.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Eep.
* NiceGirl: Dawn is a sweet, kindhearted and compassionate girl who genuinely likes the Croods, especially Eep.

Dawn's pet sloth and Belt's love interest.
----
* DistaffCounterpart: To Belt.
* {{Fainting}}: She doesn't wonder at Eep's 'peanut-toe' like Dawn does.
* LoveInterest: For Belt.
* MeaningfulName: "Sash" is another term for ''"belt"'' and either one can be used for pants, something Sash does for Dawn.
* PaleFemalesDarkMales: She has light pink fur in contrast to Belt's dark-reddish color.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Sash has light pink fur and is shown to very ladylike.
* TertiarySexualCharacteristics: She has silky pink fur (opposed to Belt's rough red fur) and long eyelashes.

* HeroicSacrifice: They encourage Guy to go onwards and leave them trapped in the tar pits.
* NoNameGiven: Their names have not been revealed by either their son or source materials.
* UnseenNoMore: A {{Downplayed}} example. They are only mentioned in the first movie, but their darkened silhouettes can be seen in the opening of the second film.

[[folder:Shaman Monkey]]
The apparent leader of the Punch Monkeys; after the Spiny Mandrilla, in the [[WesternAnimation/TheCroodsANewAge second film]] and shaman.
----
* TheDragon: To Spiny Mandrilla.
* {{Expy}}: Shares more than a few physical characteristics with [[Franchise/TheLionKing Rafiki]], both are elderly monkeys with beards, carry a staff with gourds attached to it.
* ManiacMonkeys: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]], as a member of the Punch Monkeys he's antagonistic towards the heroes, but only out of necessity.
* StarfishLanguage: As a Punch Monkey he communicates by hitting someone, usually the individual he's talking to.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: [[ImpliedTrope Implied]], though they mostly want the bananas as an offering towards the Spiny Mandrilla, his conversation with Guy implies that he along with all other Punch Monkeys love bananas.

The tyrannical leader of the Punch-Monkeys.
----
* BadBoss: To the Punch-Monkeys, willing to eat them if they don't feed him with fruit.
* BigBad: Spiny is the main antagonist of the second movie. He is the ruler of the Punch-Monkey kingdom and the one behind the attacks on the Bettermans' homeland and for kidnapping Grug, Phil and Guy.
* TheBully: Keeps the Punch-Monkeys in terror and forces them to feed him.
* DisneyVillainDeath: [[spoiler:Falls to his death after getting knocked into a chasm, grabbing onto Eep's peanut toe.]]
* EvilIsBigger: He's larger than any other animal in the franchise, and is also among the meanest, terrorizing the Punch-Monkeys and forcing them to feed him. He can easily fit three adult men in his mouth.
* KingKongCopy: He's a giant ape whom the local tribe (the Punch-Monkeys) appease with sacrifices, while the other locals (the Bettermans) hide behind a wooden wall from him.
* {{Kaiju}}: A colossal, mountain-sized ape.
* KnightOfCerebus: In a mostly comedic film, things turn seriously dark when he shows up.
* MixAndMatchCritters: As all Croodaceous fauna. He has the head of a mandrill, the body of a gorilla, and the spines of a echidna.
* MonstrousCannibalism: If he's not fed with bananas, he'll eat the Punch-Monkeys. [[spoiler: And was about to eat Grug, Guy and Phil too.]]
* ObviouslyEvil: A [[EvilIsBigger gigantic]] KillerGorilla with massive [[FangsAreEvil fangs]] and [[RedEyesTakeWarning glowing red eyes]], covered in [[SpikesOfVillainy spines]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: It has red eyes with [[HellishPupils vertically slit pupils]], befitting its monstrous nature.
* SpikesOfVillainy: It's covered in long spines that dramatically emerge from a mist upon its arrival.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: While he is not immune to being involved in some comical moments, he is played very seriously for the most part and stands out for being the closest thing to an evil character in the series.
* VillainousGlutton: It has an enormous appetite for both fruit (especially bananas) and meat. Justified by its massive size.
