!! Main Characters

[[folder: The Sisters]]

!!General
* ActionGirl: All of the sisters are tough and can hold on their own against the Red Bugs and Nushi, huge insect-like robots that threaten their lives.
* AlliterativeName: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] [[OnlyOneName since they don't have last names]], but the names of the sisters all start with '''Ri''': '''Ri'''n, '''Ri'''tsu and '''Ri'''na (When split: '''Ri'''nacchi, '''Ri'''naji, '''Ri'''nazou, '''Ri'''nayo, '''Ri'''nako and '''Ri'''namu). This is because the First Person, who precedes all of them, was named '''Ri'''ri.
* BadassFamily: They are very capable fighters with incredible powers. Even Ritsu, who can't even move on her own, has her moments of badassery during their battles.
* DisappearsIntoLight: What happens if they die, combined with FadingAway.
* FadingAway: If they're dying, their bodies will get translucent [[DisappearsIntoLight and start to disintegrate into small leaf particles]] which are quickly [[SweepingAshes swept away]].
* FighterMageThief: The three main girls evoke this feeling with their combat methods.
** Rin is the Fighter, being the main combatant of the group and having the typical characteristics like SuperStrength or being MadeOfIron.
** Ritsu is the Mage, "floating" around using Midori's roots and branches and even attacking with them as some kind of [[GreenThumb plant magic]].
** The Rinas are the Thieves, being the most agile and sneaky of the group and using attacks like [[HyperspaceArsenal sprouting weapons from nowhere]] or [[HavingABlast using bombs]]. If that's not enough, they are basically [[DoppelgangerAttack shadow clones]] used by Rinamu, the main Rina.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: They were created after Riri split herself to save Wakaba's life and, after that failed, live their lives happily just like he wanted.
* PlantPerson: Their main body composition are the half-organic, half-synthetic [[GreenRocks Kemurikusa leaves]]. Hence why when they die or are dying, [[FadingAway their body fades]] [[DisappearsIntoLight and starts disintegrating into small leaf particles]].

!! Rin
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MikakoKomatsu
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rin_kemurikusa_155369_8.jpg]]
The main heroine, fighter and real leader of the group. She's the one holding the Memory Leaf, capable of storing information, flashbacks and even the "souls" of her deceased sisters. She also got the sense of Body/Strength from the First Person and, after Ryoku's death, Sight.

* AppendageAssimilation: Or rather "Clothing Assimilation". She got Ryoku's skirt, Ryou's gloves and Riku's scarf after they died as a result of them passing their senses to her.
* [[TheBigGuy The Big Girl]]: She's the strongest and most resistant member of her family.
* CombatStilettos: She wears a pair of heels which don't inconvenience her in any way. Curiously, she shares this characteristic with Ryo, the former main battler of the family.
* CrushBlush: Most of the time when [[NiceGuy Wakaba]] talks and praises her for her abilities, Rin blushes furiously [[WhatIsThisFeeling without knowing why]]. She actually mistakes it for a poison that Wakaba is emanating.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Mainly towards [[TheOneGuy Wakaba]]. At first she treats him like a threat, accusing him of being a [[{{Mooks}} Red Bug]] and [[BoundAndGagged tying him with vines as ropes]] to prevent him from escaping or trying to kill them. As the episodes go forth, she eventually grows closer to him and learns to trust him. For some reason, [[WhatIsThisFeeling she feels hot when she's near him]].
* EmotionlessGirl: She is this to a degree, usually being unfazed by anything not related to defending her sisters (and later Wakaba).
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Ritsu and the Rinas know that Rin has feelings for Wakaba, but prefer playing along with her theory of Wakaba's presence being poison for her body so she doesn't gets distracted by it.
* HealingFactor: It's not discussed that much, but Rin seems to have some kind of healing and regeneration ability stored inside her body which makes her harder to kill. This was the reason why she recovered her blown up hand at the Sky Bridge so quickly.
* ImprobableHairstyle: Wait, why is her ponytail pointing ''upwards''?
* InASingleBound: She can jump several stories with little effort thanks to her SuperStrength.
* LastMinuteHookup: The final ten seconds of the anime go towards Rin's LoveConfession for Wakaba.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She gets in love with Wakaba on the first episode after he rescues one of the Rinas and praises Rin for being so heroic, but [[WhatIsThisFeeling she doesn't seems to understand what's going on with her]].
** It's later revealed that Riri, the original form of Rin and all the sisters, [[PrecociousCrush was in love with Wakaba as well]]. This may explain why Rin, the one holding the Memory Leaf containing all of Riri's memories, falls so easily for him.
* LoveConfession: Her final line (and the last bit of dialogue in the whole anime) is an "I love you." towards Wakaba.
* MadeOfIron: Since Rin obtained the sense of Body and Strenght from the First Person, she's quite tough and resistant to the other Red Bug's attacks. Case on point, she was able to withstand [[EnergyWeapon a massive laser beam]] from the Nushi centipede with "only" a blown up hand. Keep in mind that this same beam was capable of easily melting the steel at the bridge it was located.
* MyGreatestFailure: She's constantly blaming herself for the deaths of her sisters, swearing to protect the remaining ones no matter what.
* ScarfOfAssKicking: While her scarf may not be as prominent as Riku's, this doesn't means Rin is incapable of holding her own against the threats of the world around her.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: [[BadassFamily While all of her sisters could be considered Strong Girls]], Rin is easily the strongest of them, and her interactions and sometimes team ups with [[TheSmartGuy Wakaba]] remind of this kind of interaction.
* SuperStrength: Rin is easily the strongest of the sisters, and it shows. One clear example is at the Sky Bridge in Episode 4, where she was able to effortlessly lift the old train car with Midori, Wakaba, Ritsu and the four Rinas several meters up without breaking much of a sweat.
* TearsOfJoy: At the end of the season, when after everything she and her family have been trough [[EarnYourHappyEnding they finally manage to get their happy ending]]. Rin is incapable of holding back her cry of relief.
* {{Tsundere}}: She's this towards [[ButtMonkey Wakaba]]. When she's not being cold or treating him with little respect (even trying to "exterminate" him a few times), Rin tends to blush a lot when he's talking with her [[WhatIsThisFeeling for reasons she doesn't even know]].
* UnresolvedSexualTension: She and Wakaba just can't confess their feelings for each other, mainly because [[WhatIsThisFeeling Rin doesn't even knows she's in love with him]] and Wakaba being ObliviousToLove for the most part. It's not [[LastMinuteHookup until their entire journey ends]] and they [[EarnYourHappyEnding finally can live happily without any worries]] that Rin [[LoveConfession decides to confess her feelings for him]].
* WhatIsThisFeeling: She falls in love with Wakaba on the first episode, but doesn't understand what's happening to her and mistakes it as some kind of poison that the guy is emanating, hence why she blushes and her body gets "hot" every time she gets near him.
* WhenSheSmiles: We only get to see her smile ''once'' in the entire series: after she defeats [[BigBad the Red Tree]], encounters a massive body of water which means she and her family can live forever happily and last but not least, [[LoveConfession confesses her love for Wakaba]]. And said smile is [[https://i.imgur.com/DxzAQX4.png absolutely precious]].
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Rin [[LoveAtFirstSight gets infatuated with Wakaba from the first episode on]] and Wakaba starts developing feelings for her halfway trough the season, but neither of them say anything to each other, [[CrushBlush only blushing]] during their somewhat awkward interactions and staying as (mostly) friends. [[RelationshipUpgrade They get together in the end.]]

!! Ritsu
->'''Voiced by:''' Arisa Kiyoto
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ritsu_kemurikusa_155370.jpg]]
The decoy leader of the group, Ritsu acts as the oldest sister. She always seems tired and isn't even capable of walking on her own, needing the help of Midori's branches and roots to move and explore along the main group. [[CaringGardener She's also the one who has been taking care of the tree]], loving it as her own child. Ritsu obtained the sense of Hearing from the First Person, hence why she sports an extra pair of furry ears on her head.

* CaringGardener: Ritsu is usually tending to Midori, a tree that grows [[HealingHerb Green Kemurikusa]].
* ExhaustedEyeBags: Due to always staying on watch and suffering most of the stress and guiltiness the girls face. This makes her look like a grown-up woman when she's supposed to be a young adult at most.
* GreenThumb: Ritsu's main combat method is using Midori's branches and roots to crush or impale the [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]] with them.
* HiddenDepths: She actually feels extremely guilty about Midori, thinking of herself as selfish for using her sisters' scarce water just so she can keep it healthy and questioning if that's even a good thing. Rin snaps her out of it, saying that her happiness matters just as much as their own lives.
* LittleBitBeastly: Has a pair of cat ears on her head, mainly because she obtained the sense of Hearing from the First Person.
* MyGreatestFailure: Just like Rin, Ritsu tends to feel guiltiness after each of the sisters' deaths. In the first episode, she blames herself for not noticing the Red Bug which killed Rinako.
* NiceGirl: The nicest of all the sisters, she's the one that is always looking for them. She's also the only one that doesn't treats Wakaba like an enemy or a nuisance when they first meet, unlike the other sisters.
* NotAfraidToDie: She implies this on Episode 7 after Rin's attempt of looking for the Red Tree all by herself, saying that they should stick together and that if they die, then they die.
* TeamMom: Always taking care of her sisters and giving moral speeches to them. She's the one that takes their deaths the hardest, even blaming herself for those.
* TearsOfJoy: In Episode 5, after learning that Midori's leaves have the property of fixing broken things, she cries both in proud and relief, knowing that taking care of Midori and using most of their scarce water on it has not been a waste for her family.
* TenderTears: Ritsu is the carrier for this. She's the most sensitive of the bunch and cries tenderly a few times, like when she thinks they can live happily and in peace from now on.
* VerbalTic: She ends most of her sentences with "Nyah".
* YoungerThanTheyLook: She looks older than the other Sisters but they're supposed to be of the same age. This is because of her ExhaustedEyeBags.

!! The Rinas
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/TomomiJienaSumi
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rinas_kemurikusa.jpg]]

A group of six kids that were split from the original Rina by unknown means. They consist of [[AlliterativeName Rinamu, Rinayo, Rinacchi, Rinaji, Rinako and Rinazou]], though we only get to know well the former four as Rinako [[DownerBeginning dies in the first episode]] and Rinazou dies [[PosthumousCharacter before the start of the anime]]. They obtained the sense of Taste from the First Person.

* BadassAdorable: They look like little kids [[BigEater who are always hungry]] and playing with each other, but they're very capable fighters thanks to their sneakiness, agility and HyperspaceArsenal.
* BigEater: They're always hungry and trying to eat most metal structures on sight. Justified, since they need the substance to keep functioning as clones.
* CuteBruiser: They may be small, cute kids, but don't underestimate them. After all, they can destroy [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]] just fine like the rest of their sisters while also being capable of tanking attacks as demonstrated in Episode 7.
* ExtremeOmnivore: They seemingly only eat metal and steel from other structures. [[spoiler: The structures are actually all made of Kemurikusa substance, just like Rina herself.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Rinamu seems to be on a permanent sleep status since she's the one controlling the other Rinas and needs more energy. She's awake of course, but needs to be carried by her clones most of the time.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: If either Rin, Wakaba, Ritsu or even some of the Rinas are talking, expect the rest of them to be playing, exploring or chasing each other in the background.
* GenkiGirl: All of them are the most cheerful and hyperactive of the group.
* GirlishPigtails: The six of them sport pigatils, signifying their childish nature.
* HavingABlast: The spheres on their skirts can serve as [[TimeBomb Time Bombs]] with feet [[MarionetteMaster which the Rinas can control at will]].
* HyperspaceArsenal: They can sprout weapons, tools and all kinds of metal things out of nowhere, but only after eating the exact type of object they want to generate.
* ItAmusedMe: The reason for most of the teasing they direct towards Wakaba. They like seeing him scared.
* MarionetteMaster: The Rinas can control the spheres on their skirts as some kind of puppet-bomb hybrid [[HavingABlast which they can detonate]] whenever they want.
* {{Meido}}: Their clothes have a maid-esque style.
* MesACrowd: The Rinas are actually clones of Rinamu (who seems to be the "original" one). It's implied that if Rinamu dies, then all of the other Rinas will die as well.
* OlderThanTheyLook: All of the sisters are supposed to be around the same age, so it's safe to say that the Rinas are as old as Rin and Ritsu.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: Despite their small size, they are strong enough to carry heavy metal objects around and, as demonstrated in the Opening, crush [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]] with them as if they were nothing.
* SelfDuplication: Their main quirk. The original Rina was split into six different beings after an [[NoodleIncident unknown event]], and it seems like Rinamu, the one holding the true power, has the ability of creating more. We actually never see her creating more Rinas though.
* StealthHiBye: The Rinas have the tendency of popping out of nowhere in the middle of any conversation, be for joining in or just listening.
* TokenMiniMoe: While the other sisters and Wakaba look like young (or old, in the case of Ritsu) adults at most, the Rinas have the appearance of prepubescent kids. It seems like she looked older when she was a single being.
* {{Troll}}: They like to tease Wakaba with their comments and actions, often saying that he's going to be the first to die in battle and scaring him just because they think it's funny.
* VerbalTic: They end most of their sentences with "na~"
* WeHaveReserves. This is actually invoked by them, casually remarking that the lost of Rinako isn't so bad as there are four more Rinas.

[[folder: Wakaba]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KenjiNojima
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wakaba_kemurikusa_157385_2.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:180:The New Wakaba]]
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scientists_wakaba_kemurikusa.png]]
[[caption-width-right:180:The Old Wakaba]]
A mysterious young man without any memories of who he is (except his name) or how he arrived to this world. The sisters encounter him on their water tank after he's apparently flushed inside of it. Wakaba is an extremely naive and curious boy with desire to learn all about [[AfterTheEnd the world]], [[BadassFamily the sisters]] and, more importantly for him, [[GreenRocks Kemurikusa]].

It's later revealed that Wakaba was some kind of alien scientist with the mission of copying Earth's assets using Kemurikusa, being the captain of the ship where the series takes place. Wakaba had to sacrifice himself in an effort to stop [[BigBad the Red Tree]] using his body as fertile soil to grow a [[HealingHerb Midori tree]], but was apparently resurrected by the offspring Midori tree used by the sisters. It's unknown if the new Wakaba is him being BackFromTheDead or some kind of copy created by the new Midori tree, however.

* AmbiguousSituation: [[BackFromTheDead Is the new Wakaba his previous body being resurrected thanks to Midori's regenerative properties?]] Or is he a clone/copy created after his DNA was stored inside the tree which was latter transferred to the offspring that the sisters have been taking care of? The show certainly doesn't makes any of this clear.
* AmnesiacHero: He can't remember anything about his past except for his name. Since it's later revealed that this Wakaba might be just a copy of the original created by Midori, it's probably he didn't have ''any'' memories to begin with.
* BadassNormal: He may not have any of the sisters' superpowers, but he's a pretty intelligent man who can come up with plans on the spot and use Kemurikusa to aid him in battle.
** In fact, he may not be ''too'' normal, considering he managed to hold the leg of a [[EliteMook Nushi]] ''barehanded'' in Episode 9.
* BackFromTheDead: [[ImpliedTrope Implied]]. [[HeroicSacrifice He sacrificed himself]] way before the start of the anime so his body could serve as fertile soil for a Midori tree to grow and stop the Red Tree, but was apparently resurrected by the offspring of said Midori in Episode 1. However, it's also implied that this new Wakaba might be ''a copy'' rather than his past body being resurrected, so who knows?
** The special episode implies this to be completely true for the Old Wakaba, appearing inside the alternate, not destroyed ship where Riku, Ryo and Ryoku also end up after their apparent deaths.
* BoundAndGagged: [[DownplayedTrope Only bounded]], but still. Wakaba stays with that vine around his torso for the first half of the season before it disappears. [[ChekhovsGun Well, mostly]].
* BumblingSidekick: He's this at the beginning. Can't do a thing, and is always annoying [[{{Tsundere}} Rin]] with [[ConstantlyCurious his curiosity]], tagging along while not providing a substantial advantage. [[TookALevelInBadass He gets better once he learns how to use the Kemurikusa]].
* ButtMonkey: Doesn't gets a lot of respect by either [[{{Tsundere}} Rin]] or [[{{Troll}} the Rinas]], treating him like a nuisance at first and trying to either exterminate him on suggesting that he's going to be the first to die in battle. He's also the most prone of suffering accidents while exploring the islands. [[CharacterDevelopment He gets over this near the end]].
* ChekhovsGun: See that vine around his torso? It's made from Midori. Rin tied Wakaba with it during the first half of the season since she didn't completely trust him, but it eventually disappeared... until the FinalBattle against the [[BigBad Red Tree]], where Wakaba would've died if not for a little piece of the vine that was stored inside his pocket, allowing the [[HealingFactor healing properties]] of the [[HealingHerb Green Kemurikusa]] to save his life.
* ChekhovsHobby: His interest on collecting and playing with Kemurikusa comes in handy later on the season, where Wakaba learns how to use them to their full potential and allows him to be more helpful during the main group's journey.
* ConstantlyCurious: More pronounced during the first episodes, where Wakaba would ask every five minutes what was going on around him or what those strange leaves known as Kemurikusa did. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], since he was completely unfamiliar with this new world.
* GoshDarnItToHeck: His catchphrase, "mesa ki ni naru" could be translated to "darn interested".
* HeroicSacrifice: Wakaba actually sacrifices himself ''[[RuleOfThree three times]]'' (though only one of them succeeds)
** The first time was when [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom Riri]] created the [[BigBad Red Tree]]. After failing to stop it by normal means, Wakaba sent Riri far away to the first island before using his own body to make a Midori tree grow in a final attempt of containing it. He managed to save Riri, [[SenselessSacrifice but unfortunately it was too late to stop the Red Tree]].
** The second time was when he tried to divert the Red Tree's attention towards himself to protect Rin (who was inside a trance due to the Memory Leaf's effect). This gets him impaled by the Red Tree's roots, although he manages to survive thanks to the power of [[HealingHerb Green Kemurikusa]].
** The third time was during the FinalBattle with the Red Tree, where he pushed Rin out of the way before getting crushed by its roots. He would've died if not for [[ChekhovsGun the piece of Midori's vine]] inside his pocket.
* HumanAliens: Wakaba is an alien sent to Earth with the purpose of copying and printing the planet's cultural assets in an effort of preserving them. And of course, he looks just like any regular human.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: He gets perforated by one of the Red Tree's roots at the end of [[WhamEpisode Episode 11]]. Fortunately, he barely managed to heal his wound with [[HealingHerb Green Kemurikusa]].
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: His old self used to wear one, although it disappeared once he was copied/reborn. [[FreezeFrameBonus One can actually spot it in Episode 7]] [[https://i.imgur.com/Nf11GwW.jpg at the left of the Midori tree's base]].
* LastMinuteHookup: The final ten seconds of the anime go towards Rin's LoveConfession for Wakaba.
* TheLoad: He's this during the first third of the season, being more annoying than helpful and even slowing down the group during their journey thanks to not understanding anything around him. [[TookALevelInBadass Once he learns how to use Kemurikusa however...]]
* TheLostLenore: He becomes this for [[PrecociousCrush Riri]] after his HeroicSacrifice. Even after that, she still decides to go with [[LiteralSplitPersonality splitting herself apart]] so she can do what makes her happy as Wakaba requested.
* MacGuffinPersonReveal: The sisters' original mission was rescuing and reuniting with Wakaba after his yet unknown death. Surprise surprise, he was with them all along!
* TheNavigator: Even though Shiro functions as the group's main guide most of the time, Wakaba is the only one who can sense the Red Tree's heat, something that comes in handy a couple of times where not even [[NativeGuide Shiro]] knows where to go.
* TheNeedless: He doesn't needs to sleep, eat or drink that much compared to regular humans. All he eats is violet Kemurikusa.
* NiceGuy: Probably the nicest person of the entire cast (with the possible exception of [[TeamMom Ritsu]]), Wakaba is very respectful and kind towards the other girls ([[ButtMonkey even if they are not]]) and is always looking for a reason to try to be helpful. Even when [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom Riri]] basically destroyed all of his hard work and created a massive threat to the world, Wakaba was incapable of getting mad at her, knowing that she did it just so he could take a break from his stressful job.
* NotQuiteHuman: He's an alien, but looks and behaves just like any regular human. The only exception being that Wakaba doesn't needs as much [[TheSleepless sleep]] or [[TheNeedless water]] as normal people, and he can tune his body using [[HealingHerb Green and violet Kemurikusa]] to keep functioning during large periods of work.
* ObliviousToLove: He doesn't seems to notice Rin's obviously crush on him since the start of the series, even when he also starts developing a thing for her halfway trough the season.
* TheOneGuy: He's the only male in an otherwise all-female family.
* ReallyWasBornYesterday: [[BackFromTheDead Be a resurrected body]] or a copy of the original one, this Wakaba is implied to have been born just a few days ago thanks to Midori and the Green Kemurikusa's effect.
* TheSmartGuy: He's the one making most of the plans during the group's travel around the ship, like his idea of using all of the girl's powers combined to defeat the [[EliteMook Nushi]] of the Sky Bridge in Episode 4. He's also the only one with the knowledge of how to control [[GreenRocks Kemurikusa]].
* TheSleepless: He can stay awake for days without much ill effects. However, he ''still'' gets tired and is implied that this can affect his health.
* StrongGirlSmartGuy: He may be TheSmartGuy to the sisters' [[BadassFamily Strong Girls]], but this is specially pronounced when he teams up with [[SuperStrength Rin]], the most capable of them.
* TookALevelInBadass: From the second third of the season on, where he learns how to use [[GreenRocks Kemurikusa]] which allows him to become useful both out and inside battle.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: He and Rin just can't confess their feelings for each other, mainly because [[WhatIsThisFeeling Rin doesn't even knows she's in love with him]] and Wakaba being ObliviousToLove for the most part. It's not [[LastMinuteHookup until their entire journey ends]] and they [[EarnYourHappyEnding finally can live happily without any worries]] that Rin [[LoveConfession decides to confess her feelings for him]].
* WillTheyOrWontThey: Rin [[LoveAtFirstSight gets infatuated with him from the first episode on]] and Wakaba starts developing feelings for her halfway trough the season, but neither of them say anything to each other, [[CrushBlush only blushing]] during their somewhat awkward interactions and staying as (mostly) friends. [[RelationshipUpgrade They get together in the end.]]

[[folder: Midori]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/midori_kemurikusa.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:It's the one doing the flex.]]
A sentient Kemurikusa tree born from a sprout that the sisters encountered on a wall. Now it has grown inside an old train car thanks to [[CaringGardener Ritsu's]] efforts and serves as their main method of transport, capable of using its branches and roots to walk with said vehicle as a body.

It's later revealed that this Midori is an offspring of the giant Midori tree which the original Wakaba used in a failed attempt of stopping [[BigBad the Red Tree]].

* ChekhovsGun: Midori's vine, which was used to tie Wakaba for half of the season, comes in handy on the FinalBattle, where its healing properties end up saving his life.
* CombatMedic: Midori's Kemurikusa leaves can be used both to destroy [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]] and [[HealingHerb heal Wakaba of any kind of injury]].
* HealingFactor: Its leaves are capable of healing Wakaba (and ''only'' [[HumanAliens Wakaba]]) of any injury. Considering that Wakaba created them in his past life, it's safe to say that this was one of its intended purposes.
* HeroicSuicide: Its core branch (basically its brain and heart) is used in the FinalBattle to provide the [[FinalBoss Red Tree]] with the last blow necessary to defeat it. Sadly, removing it kills Midori as well. However...
* NotQuiteDead: As a form of Wakaba. Midori is able to recreate Wakaba in a juvenile state because it grew from him and contained his construction data; the finale end card also shows Midori growing out of the period in the “Kemurikusa.” Title.
* TheSpeechless: Considering that Midori is a tree, this was to be expected.

!! Other Characters
[[folder: The Dead Sisters]]

!!General
* ActionGirl: The three of them, just like Rin, Ritsu and the Rinas, are very powerful and capable of defeating Red Bugs and Nushis.
* AlliterativeName: Like their living sisters and the First Person, their names start with '''Ri''': '''Ri'''ku, '''Ry'''ou and '''Ry'''oku. The last two still apply because their name still includes '''Ri''' as per the Japanese kana: りょ (Ri+yo).
* BackFromTheDead: After apparently dying for good in the FinalBattle, the special episode implies that they're still alive in some kind of alternate ship where everything is fine.
* BadassFamily: It seems like it run on ''all'' the family.
* BigDamnHeroes: Played as straight as possible. In the final battle, as Rin and Wakaba are fighting the [[FinalBoss Red Tree]] and Wakaba is about to die, the dead sisters show up after Rin's anguished scream for him. They turn the tide of the battle in their favor.
* CavalryOfTheDead: They show up one last time in the FinalBattle, using all of their remaining strength to defeat the Red Tree and say their goodbyes to Rin.
* DisappearsIntoLight: Happens to them after the FinalBattle, having wasted all of their energy and finally dying for good.
* FadingAway: Like their sisters, when they die, their bodies will get translucent [[DisappearsIntoLight and start to disintegrate into small leaf particles]] which are quickly [[SweepingAshes swept away]].
* LiteralSplitPersonality: Along with their living sisters, they were created after Riri split herself to save Wakaba's life and, after that failed, live their lives happily just like he wanted.
* NotQuiteDead: They're "alive" inside Rin's Memory Leaf in some kind of life and death limbo. They die for good after using all their strength battling the [[BigBad Red Tree]], and even then, the special episode implies that they're not done for good.
* PlantPerson: Their main body composition are the half-organic, half-synthetic [[GreenRocks Kemurikusa leaves]]. Hence why when they die, [[FadingAway their body fades]] [[DisappearsIntoLight and starts disintegrating into small leaf particles]].
* PosthumousCharacter: The three of them are long dead before the start of the anime, but we get to know a little bit of each one thanks to the living sisters' conversations. [[NotQuiteDead Of course, they are not so dead after all]].

!! Riku
->'''Voiced by:''' Kanna Tensawa
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riku_kemurikusa_158719.jpg]]
The third of the sisters to apparently die (not counting Rinazou's death), she was the only person in the group capable of operating Kemurikusa. She obtained the sense of Touch from the First Person.

* CutenessProximity: According to her sisters, Riku loved cute things more than anything else.
* InTheHood: She's never seen without her hood on.
* JapaneseDelinquents: Her main motif, from her selection of clothes to her speech patterns ([[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns such as using the very rude ''ore'' pronoun when referring to herself and ''omae'' when talking to Wakaba]]). Overlaps with her being a {{Tomboy}}.
* TheNavigator: She used to be this for the main group thanks to being the only one with sense of Touch, allowing her to feel the [[DeadlyGas red fog's]] heat and evade it.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Has a red scarf around her neck and is capable of kicking as much ass as her sisters.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: When she discovers that Wakaba has the Sense of Touch just like her, the first thing she does is letting out an {{Squee}} and touch his entire body to check if he's not lying.
* ScaryTeeth: Her upper teeth are sharp and pointy.
* ShockAndAwe: She's always carrying a rare type of Yellow Kemurikusa that has the property of shooting electric attacks.
* {{Squee}}: Her reaction upon learning that Wakaba has the Sense of Touch just like her.
* {{Tomboy}}: One of her quirks, from her selection of clothes to her speech patterns ([[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns such as using the very masculine ''ore'' pronoun when referring to herself and ''omae'' when talking to Wakaba]]). Overlaps with her JapaneseDelinquents motif.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Despite her {{Tomboy}} status, [[CutenessOverload she still loves cute things]] and isn't above letting out an {{Squee}} from time to time.

!! Ryo
->'''Voiced by:''' Yuna Mimura
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryo_kemurikusa_161442.jpg]]
The second of the sisters to apparently die, she was the main fighter of the group before dying to a Nushi. Ryo is actually the eldest of the sisters (though it's heavily implied that they share the same age). She originally had both the sense of Memory and Smell obtained from the First Person before the former was transferred to Rin.

* [[TheBigGuy The Big Girl]]: She used to be this for the team before perishing to a Nushi, being the strongest of the six sisters and the main fighter of the group.
* BloodKnight: Unlike Rin, who became the main fighter out of necessity, Ryo just loved to fight for the sake of it. Better demonstrated when she and Wakaba speak for the first time, where she explains to him how she would destroy the Red Tree in a very happy and excited tone. Sadly, this is probably the reason why she died due to underestimating a [[EliteMook Nushi]].
* CombatStilettos: She wears a pair of heels which don't inconvenience her in any way. Curiously, she shares this characteristic with Rin, her successor as the main combatant of the group.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Unlike Rinamu who has a good reason for this happening, Ryo never opens her eyes just because. She's capable of moving and fighting just fine though.
* MellowFellow: Never seen without a calm, carefree expression on her face. Her voice almost never changes its happily relaxed tone even when battling all-powerful enemies like the [[BigBad Red Tree]].
* NiceGirl: Not as nice as [[TeamMom Ritsu]], but Ryo doesn't mind helping Wakaba while also not threatening to kill him when they first meet (unlike every other sister bar Ritsu).
* PipePain: Her weapon is a large metal pipe with a lace tied to it. Apparently it was eaten by Rinazou when she died, but her self inside the Memory Leaf sports the same one.

!! Ryoku
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AkiraSekine
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryoku_kemurikusa_161443_6.jpg]]
The first of the sister to apparently die, Ryoku was the brains of the group and the one that came with most of the plans. She was the only one with the ability to write and read, and also the one that obtained the sense of Sight from the First Person.

* CombatTentacles: Weirdly, parts of her hair can transform into some kind of tentacles capable of launching attacks.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: PlayedForLaughs. When Wakaba reveals that not only he can read, but also took a look at Ryoku's diary, she says that she has no other option than kill him. She gets over this pretty quickly though.
* {{Jerkass}}: Unlike the other sister which are nice to a degree, Ryoku tends to be very rude at first sight.
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: However, once she opens to Wakaba, she is shown to be quite nice and helpful. Of course this doesn't stops her from still throwing jabs from time to time.
* PrehensileHair: She can move her hair at will to attack her enemies.
* TheSmartGirl: Easily the smartest Sister of the family before her death. She was the most knowledgeable about the world they're in and the only one capable of reading and writing.

[[folder: The First Person / Riri]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MikakoKomatsu
[[quoteright:180:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/riri_kemurikusa_161444.jpg]]
An orphan child which the original Wakaba apparently resurrected by accident using Kemurikusa. She's very curious and enthusiastic about it, but would rather prefer to spend her time playing with Wakaba, who in return is always busy with his construction workload. For this reason she decides to create a new Kemurikusa capable of consuming all of the inventory so Wakaba doesn't has to work anymore, [[GoneHorriblyWrong but this backfires horribly...]]

She's the original form of all the sisters, [[LiteralSplitPersonality splitting herself apart]] using a new Kemurikusa combination in an effort to save Wakaba's life [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom after she inadvertently creates a threat to the world]].

* BackFromTheDead: According to the old Wakaba, he was able to resurrect her using Kemurikusa after finding her inside a lake. However, it's implied that she might be a copy rather than a dead body being revived.
* BrainyBrunette: She has dark hair and, as detailed in ChildProdigy below, is very intelligent and knowledgeable about Kemurikusa.
* ChildProdigy: She's incredibly smart for her age, knowing as much about Kemurikusa as the adult Wakaba and even learning how to make different Kemurikusa combinations with different effects. [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom Too bad this leads to Riri creating a Kemurikusa capable of destroying the world]].
* LiteralSplitPersonality: The sisters are the result of Riri splitting her existence into six pieces in an effort so save Wakaba after his HeroicSacrifice. Even after learning that this was AllForNothing, she still decided to go with the plan so her personalities could live together happily just like Wakaba wanted Riri to do.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Her reaction upon learning that her Kemurikusa experiment created an enormous threat which not even Wakaba is capable of putting an stop at.
* NiceGirl: She's just a little kid who wants to play with Wakaba and help him whenever he needs.
* PrecociousCrush: Despite being a child, she obviously has feelings for the adult Wakaba. This may be the reason why Rin, the one holding the Memory Leaf containing all of her memories, falls in love with him.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Why is everything on this world so damn wrong? Because she accidentally made it that way.
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: According to her, her parents died from overworking and she fears that the same could happen to Wakaba, who is always tired and in need of sleep. It's the main reason why she created the Red Kemurikusa.

[[folder: Shiro]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MikakoKomatsu
[[quoteright:150:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shiro_kemurikusa_161447_9.jpg]]

Small, Roomba-like robots with unknown purposes for most of the story. One of them starts following Wakaba in Episode 5 and becomes part of the main group for the remaining part of the season.

The Shiros are, in fact, the pre-infection forms of the [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]], being capable of combining themselves into bigger and more powerful robots. Later on the season, it's revealed that the Shiros were part of the ship's crew employed by the original [[HumanAliens Wakaba]] on his mission of copying Earth with Kemurikusa, but were abandoned and left with nothing to do after [[HeroicSacrifice Wakaba's death]] and [[BigBad the Red Tree]]'s takeover.

* {{Expy}}: People were quick to note the Shiros' similarities with the [[Anime/KemonoFriends Lucky Beasts]], being small, helpful robots who serve as guides for the main group thanks to their knowledge of the world they're in. These similarities were proven further with the revelation that the Shiros used to be workers of the ship, just like Lucky Beasts are workers of Japari Park.
** The robots with screens are called Nushis by the original Wakaba. Nushi is an archaic word in Japanese meaning "leader" - compare to Lucky Beasts' nickname "Boss".
* HelpfulMook: Not exactly {{Mooks}} since they haven't been infected by [[TheVirus the red fog]], but it still applies. The Shiro who is always following Wakaba serves as their guide during most of the season, giving helpful insights [[AfterTheEnd about the world they're in]] and providing the main group with maps of the Islands which are useful for traveling while evading the Red Tree's harmful roots.
* HeroicSacrifice: The Shiros encountered Episode 8 who, after combining into a HumongousMecha, use their last bits of strength by destroying one of the Red Tree's roots which was blocking the path, allowing them to do one last task before perishing.
* HumongousMecha: The Shiros can combine themselves into bigger, more powerful robots with incredible abilities and endurance. Useful when they're trying to help the main group, [[OhCrap but when they get infected by the red fog...]]
** The Shiro with a screen can return to his combat form.
* NativeGuide: They seem to be the only ones who know what's going on around them while also having vast knowledge about the Islands and the ship, hence why the Shiro following Wakaba becomes their main guide for a large part of the season.
* RobotBuddy: One of them follows Wakaba (and by extension the sisters) for most of the series.
* TheSpeechless: The Shiros are incapable of speaking, only emitting small, robot-like "bips" and writing words and emoticons on their screens (which only Wakaba can read).

[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/red_tree_kemurikusa.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:The Core Branch]]

A massive, sentient Kemurikusa born after [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom Riri]] combined some of them in an attempt to stop Wakaba from overworking. Now it's out of control and ready to destroy all Kemurikusa and Kemurikusa-based lifeforms which, unfortunately, includes [[PlantPerson the sisters]].

* AmbiguouslyEvil: While it's safe to say that the Red Tree is very dangerous, whether it's evil or not is up to interpretation. After all, Riri specifically created it as a weapon against other Kemurikusa, so isn't like it has gone rogue or is doing anything beyond its purpose. On the other hand, [[TheVirus its infection of other machines]] and destruction of the ship (something it was ''not'' programmed to do) leaves unclear if this thing is truly malicious.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: The only way to kill the Red Tree without allowing its HealingFactor capacities to kick in is directly destroying its core branch, deep inside its main body.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: See that big thing besides the skyscraper? ''That's just its core branch''. The real tree is so humongous it reaches as high as the clouds.
* BigBad: Everything wrong going on inside the ship, from the red fog and the Bugs it produces to the water scarcity and overall destruction of the structures around the islands, is all because of this thing, hence why destroying it becomes the main objective of the group from the moment they discover its existence.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: [[AmbiguouslyEvil Unclear as its true intentions are]], the Red Tree was given the purpose of eradicating all Kemurikusa and Kemurikusa-based lifeforms on the planet, and that's exactly what it's doing, even if its methods are extremely dangerous to the sisters.
* CreatorCameo: Its groans are sampled from an earlier project by Tatsuki; the flail was fashioned after Huiumetsu, Tatsuki’s character there.
* DeadlyGas: It's capable of producing a very toxic and corrosive fog to other Kemurikusa. Towards machines? It converts them into [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]].
* DiagonalCut: The core branch is defeated this way after Rin slices it in a half using Midori's own core.
* DisappearsIntoLight: While the Tree ends up shrinking and collapsing after it's killed, the core branch disintegrates into hundreds of leaf particles, just like the sisters when they die.
* EnergyWeapon: The core branch sports a laser beam on its left hand.
* EpicFlail: Its core branch has a spherical mace with an ACSII face on its right hand.
* EvilSoundsDeep: [[BlueAndOrangeMorality Not exactly evil]], but the Red Tree's core can be heard emitting moans and growls with a very deep, unsettling "voice". It’s how Tatsuki sounds like after modulation.
* FinalBoss: After all the [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]], [[DeadlyGas red fog]] and lack of resources that Rin, Wakaba and the other sisters face, the Red Tree itself is the final obstacle they have to overcome in order to finally achieve [[EarnYourHappyEnding their happy ending.]]
* [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe Half the Core It Used to Be]]: Its fate, courtesy of Rin and Midori's own core.
* HealingFactor: No matter how much its roots and branches are cut or destroyed, the Red Tree can regenerate them instantly.
* MookMaker: One of the main purposes of the red fog it produces is infecting machines to convert them into [[{{Mooks}} Red Bugs]]. It also seems like its roots are capable of storing (or even ''creating'') Red Bugs to use them as a self-defense method if it's being attacked.
* PoisonIsCorrosive: Its red fog is both very toxic and corrosive towards Kemurikusa.
* PoisonousPerson: One of its abilities is emitting a very poisonous fog.
* ShieldedCoreBoss: The core branch is protected by a barrier similar to the ones the old Wakaba used to try to contain it in the past.
* SpikesOfVillainy: The core branch's body is covered in pointy spikes.
* TheVirus: Its red fog, apart from being highly toxic and corrosive to other Kemurikusa, has the ability of infecting machines and mechanical lifeforms to serve it on its quest of destroying the world.

[[caption-width-right:300:This is just one of their many forms.]]
Mechanical lifeforms that have been infected by [[TheVirus the red fog]]. They act as the main enemies the group face during their travel.

* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: Most of them have the appearance of real bugs like worms, centipedes or cockroaches.
* EnergyWeapon: The Nushi Centipede on the bridge has the ability of ejecting a massive laser beam from its head capable of melting steel.
* {{Flight}}: The Beetle-like Bugs have the ability to fly and charge at great speed, making them harder to hit and avoid.
* HeroKiller: If a sister has died, it's because of them. We actually see one of them killing a Rina [[DownerBeginning at the start of the first episode]].
* {{Mooks}}: Most episodes have the sisters ([[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and Wakaba]]) fighting a group of them during their adventure.
** EliteMooks: The Nushis, massive Red Bugs with special abilities which are harder to defeat. Both times the main group encounters one, a complex strategy is required to defeat them.
* TronLines: All of the Red Bugs sport these on their bodies.
* WallCrawl: More like Wall ''Surfing''. The Nushi from Episode 9 has the property of sliding along the barrier that connects to the next island.
