* CultClassic: Considering the [[TabletopGame/YuGiOh Card Game]] is still going and Capsule Monsters hasn't seen the light of day since this game, it didn't particularly set the world on fire. That said, this game still has a pretty dedicated fanbase. While opinions of the game's mechanics vary, one thing most people agree on in particular is the [[Awesome/VideoGameLevels level design is some of the best]] the TurnBasedStrategy genre has seen, featuring good use of chokepoints and level hazards, mid-battle changes to shake up strategy, ''and'' just being some of the better looking ones the [=PS2=] has to offer.

The music is also excellent.

Added DiffLines:

* ScrappyMechanic: Unlike other TurnBasedStrategy games, hovering over an enemy unit ''doesn't'' show an overlay of their movement and attack range. This means the player has to manually count out how much movement they can do on their turn based on the number in their stat box. While the intent is to emulate playing a physical board game, it does make miscalculating and taking unnecessary damage frustratingly common.

Added DiffLines:

* ItsEasySoItSucks: The major complaint is how the enemy units, while they'll begin to use inherently stronger monsters as the game goes on, they're ''all'' locked to level 1, while yours will be leveling up throughout the game. This means the end game can often end up being laughably easy with the right builds.

* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: While it's still important to have a balanced team type-wise, choosing the Thunder (and to a lesser extent Light) element can make your game easy or quick, due to being an element that is strong against 5 of the 10 late game opponents. The early game monster Kaminarikozou is especially used during Speedruns for its good mobility (3 tiles diagonally) and range (2 tiles diagonally).

** Marik's stage is a box of squares that power up certain attributes, forcing you to pick battles carefully. His strongest monster is Zoa, which has a huge amount of attack strength that's boosted even more if he lands on a dark space. If you don't take Zoa out immediately, it can defeat weaker monsters with one hit.

* ThatOneBoss: Seto Kaiba's first stage is very troublesome because it has many areas where you cannot move, but his monsters can get around it and attack you easily.

* AwesomeMusic: The entire soundtrack is very good.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jQCX0meKXk Gears of Fate]], the music for when you decide who goes first. It's an upbeat, anticipatory piece with violins and horns.
** Pegasus's first stage, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmFPnOg4lNA Imperfect Paradise]], is a classical piece that moves a touch too fast for the type of music it is, reflecting Pegasus's off-kilter behavior.
** Ryou Bakura's stage, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZijuXsSr5A Moonlit Cherry Blossom]], is a quiet Japanese tune that captures the stage you fight him on.
** Seto Kaiba's final stage, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycia11EJexU Aerial Palace]], is perfect for a final boss, starting out with an ominous pipe organ before becoming even ''more'' epic.

** Yami Marik's second stage takes place on a volcano that erupts. Any monster standing in the lava gets a huge boost to attack, but takes damage if they're not fire-type. Most of his monsters are Fire-types, and many have long attack ranges. If you're not careful, he can defeat your monsters with one blow each.
