** While much issue was made at the time of release about how the film supposedly takes Mary and Dan's account that the memos were actually real in order to turn them into martyrs persecuted for telling the truth, one could easily also interpret the film depicting Mary, Dan, and their team as being deeply in denial that they were swindled and [[NeverMyFault being either too prideful or too ashamed to admit they might've screwed up and made a mistake]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Lucy is played by the very talented and well-known Creator/ElisabethMoss, could've brought a unique perspective to the case as a journalism professor, and she even shows hints of a developing friendship with Roger and Mike in the interactions she shares with either character. However, she basically stops appearing in the film after the initial investigation is over and isn't even present in most of the scenes where the rest of team all get together. Overall, she comes across as a waste of an accomplished actress and a potentially interesting character.

*** The memos were questionable at best right from the get-go, see WhatAnIdiot below. Between the partisan slant that CBS had already adopted in favor of Gore and the evidence they already had indicating that they weren't authentic, it's hard not to see them as being driven by ideology and/or stupidity.

* WhatAnIdiot: Bill Burkett told no less than three individual stories of how he got the memos. The last one was incredulous- Burkett said that a woman named Lucy Ramirez told him he would be given an envelope, and that after making copies of the documents inside, he was to burn the envelope and whatever was in it. This would sound incredulous if it was the ''first'' story told. But Burkett had changed his story once before already, and was changing it again. And yet, Mary Mapes decided to go along with his story.
