Some Anvils Need To Be Dropped got cut, going to see if this fits better under An Aesop.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: The author wrote this book in order to inspire people to stop holding grudges and forgive people, even if it's near impossible for them to do so. If two people live their lives being angry at each other and hurting each other, they'll never be happy.

* WhatAnIdiot: Annette tends to make really bad decisions at times. The good thing is, Aunt Claude is quick to call her out on it gently. Lucien's family, however, are a different story. At one point in the episode, \\
You'd Expect: Lucien's mother and sister to realize the extent of what happened has done with him and get him some help, and be understanding and patient with him, letting him know that they're there for him and will help him recover in any way possible.\\
Instead: After the reunion, Lucien's mother lectures him (especially egregious as Lucien's teacher explicitly tells her to her face that punishing him won't solve the problem!), and Lucien's sister spanks him 20 times!

Doesn't apply, as the trope involves heroic characters not only not doing good things, but being continually praised for their actions in-story. Since the point of the novel is forgiveness and how holding grudges is unhealthy, Annette is called out on her actions more than once, something that wouldn't happen to a Designated Hero. Both the book and the anime make it clear that viewers aren't supposed to agree with her actions, understandable as some of them can be.

* DesignatedHero: Some of Annette's detractors see her this way. While she's kind and loves her family much, her stubborness in accepting Lucien's apology makes her difficult to be sympathetic.

* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Annette herself is this especially in the anime. There were some viewers who dislike her for being Jerkass and couldn't forgive Lucien for so long. On the other hand, others find her to be interesting for having a well-rounded personality and character development.
** The anime version of Dani as well. Italian viewers tend to dislike him for his resemblance to fellow hated character Sunny, a blonde whiny kid with an annoying voice they even have the same voice actress in the Italian dub. On the other hand, others like him for being nicer than his sister, and especially more sympathetic towards Lucien.

* HilariousInHindsight:
** In Episode 6 of the anime version, Annette said to her dad that she's like a big sister to Lucien. Annette and Lucien's Japanese voice actresses Keiko Han and Eiko Yamada would later work on Anime/AiNoWakakusaMonogatari, with the former would be played as Meg while Jo is voiced by the latter.
** Annette's dad mentioned in Episode 10 that ermines aren't supposed to be taken care as pets. Cue Romeo's Blue Skies, where the main character Romeo has a pet ermine named Piccolo.

* MisBlamed: In the anime version, Klaus is sometimes blamed by some viewers for causing Annette and Lucien's relationship being broken and Dani's near death experience. In reality, ermines like him aren't suppose to be taken care as pets as they tend to be agressive. Annette's father Pierre even lampshades about it in Episode 10 after he saw his children adopting it.
* NeverLiveItDown: After a lot of CharacterDevelopment, Annette's habit of destroying Lucien's woodcarvings made a good amount of readers find her actions to be Irony difficult to forgive, even if she's done something good since then. Especially in the anime version, to the point that some Japanese viewers nicknamed her as "Queen of Destruction" because of it.

* ToyShip: Annette and Lucien, if you believe there's BelligerentSexualTension between two kids who used to be very close friends. Even more so in the anime, the lyrics of the French opening (long version) mentions them kissing after their fights.

* VindicatedByHistory: The anime version didn't do well on its initial run, largely due to the book version being difficult to find in Japan and the main character being less sympathetic. When it was fansubbed, it has gotten a kinder reception and gained a sizable number of supporters for its storyline, unique drama and explaining the psychological aspects of characters well.
