** Bobby crossed this years before the film's present when he attacked and stabbed Emma. Though his actions in the present day certainly would have made him cross it again. He comes to the lake house with his brother under the pretense of emptying the safe, then kills Tom and would have gone as far as to kill Emma to get the diamonds if Jimmy hadn't stopped him.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Emma is believed by some fans to be [[AngstWhatAngst entirely too calm]] for someone in her situation, especially when her one hope of getting out of the lake house is killed and her former attacker and his brother start looking for her, with the former clearly out for blood. Even when she ends up caught and completely at Bobby's mercy, she seems to feel nothing but exasperation. However, other fans argue against this by stating that Emma panicking or devolving into a blubbering mess would have made the movie way less entertaining and Emma not nearly as much of a compelling character. In the end he dies a gruesome death when he gets into a fight with Bobby over beheading Emma and Bobby kills him accidentally.

* IronWoobie: Emma gets put through a lot of bullshit throughout the movie through no fault of her own. And all because her abusive husband is determined to maker her life hell from beyond the grave. But she never lets things keep her down for too long and shows an admirable amount of sardonic grim humor and determination in finally escaping Mark's fucked up games.

** Mark crosses it when he forces Emma to witness his suicide and sets up a whole ThanatosGambit designed to make her miserable even after his death. He even goes so far as to invite the man who attacked and stabbed her in the past to the completely isolated lake house, ''knowing'' that said man is still blaming Emma for his prison sentence and , maybe, setting Emma's lover up to be murdered.
