%% ** Plankton's animosity and homicidal plan directed towards Mr. Krabs. While Plankton's attempt to indirectly murder Mr. Krabs through King Neptune is certainly cruel and nearly out-of-character despite his similarly villainous schemes in the show itself, his hatred for Mr. Krabs becomes much more understandable after the episode "One Coarse Meal," which is set before the events of the film. In the episode, Mr. Krabs ruthlessly and remorselessly torments Plankton with Plankton's worst fear, whales, especially Mr. Krabs's daughter, Pearl, by disguising himself as her. The psychological torture reaches a climax when Plankton, in a kids' show no less, tries to commit suicide in order to spare himself the pain his own fear is causing him. Even after finding out about this, Mr. Krabs is completely undeterred and fully intends to have his foe eliminated by any means necessary, even suicide. While the fact that they were former friends before becoming business rivals makes Plankton's plan to have Krabs frozen and executed shocking to some fans of the show, Plankton's cruelty towards and torment of Mr. Krabs becomes less unsympathetic in hindsight.

* AccidentalAesop: Spongebob not only saves the day without abandoning his child-like behavior, but embraces it by the end, and is able to be an efficient manager of the Krusty Krab 2 regardless. A potential reading of this could be "Growing up doesn't mean having to abandon things you enjoy that may come across as immature; as long as you can do what needs to be done, it's OK to enjoy things that make you happy even if you're supposed to have outgrown them."

** You'd think that after finding out Plankton's plan, Squidward would go straight to King Neptune and tell him what's going on, or secretly figure out a plan to stop him. Instead, he goes up to Plankton's face to ''brag'' about deducing the truth and reporting him to King Neptune. This bad move prompts Plankton to enslave the entire city along with Squidward.
** Plankton was able to take over Bikini Bottom all because Neptune was too busy worrying about his bald spot. One would think the king would grow a little suspicious seeing the enslaved townsfolk or the statues dedicated to Plankton, but instead he makes his way to the Krusty Krab as if it was just another regular day.
** You'd think the thug who stole [=SpongeBob=] and Patrick's car would be rather suspicious when the two of them happen to show up at the bar to take back their vehicle. Strangely, he doesn't even acknowledge them as the two unlucky schmucks he ran across earlier.

* WeirdAlEffect:
** Mostly the target audience but many don't realize that "Goofy Goober Rock" is a parody of Music/TwistedSister's 80s classic "I Wanna Rock", nor would they recognize the random snippet of David Lee Roth's cover of "Just a Gigolo" he lip-syncs after the first verse.
