** Despite the show being set in a WorldOfJerkass, it's not uncommon to find audiences siding with one character and miss that ''everybody'' is intended to be an unreliable hypocrite with their own self-serving reasons for being less than truthful and to present themselves in a better light. For instance, in "Irregular Around the Margins", a lot of viewers seem to think that Christopher is a CrazyJealousGuy and irrationally paranoid for being angry at Tony and Adriana when they nearly have an affair, easily accept Tony's excuses and rationalizations, and overlook that everybody around Christopher is ''gaslighting'' him after the car crash. Christopher happens to be right in his suspicions, it's just easy to dismiss him because he's so unlikeable and abusive. [[JerkassHasAPoint The fact of him being right in that suspicion doesn't make him a hero either]].

* AudienceAlienatingEnding: This show is particularly controversial [[spoiler:with its abrupt smash cut to black]]. This ''may'' depict [[spoiler: Tony's death]], but it's left very ambiguous and up to the viewer's interpretation. During the original airing of the final episode, angry viewers actually called their cable companies to complain about their signal cutting out, while Creator/DavidChase received many, many accusations that he inserted the NoEnding as a [[TakeThatAudience petulant "fuck you" to the audience]] for, in his view, [[RootingForTheEmpire siding with Tony for too long]]. Binge-watching the second half of season 6 makes it much less ambiguous, [[spoiler:with the clues to Tony's POV murder being very clearly laid out, which might have been less obvious to viewers who watched it week to week.]]

** Richie Aprile is a giant [[TheSociopath sociopath]] even by the standards of the show, and yet despite that, he ends up being one of the most well-remembered antagonists faced by Tony thanks to David Proval's performance, the many DeadpanSnarker moments he gets, and his absolutely psycho moments of violence, [[CrossesTheLineTwice to the point where they go back to being incredibly funny]].

** Arguably, Vito's entire AmouredClosetGay arc, save for [[spoiler:his death]]. While it's clear that the show is trying to analyze what being gay would be like in a [[TheMafia mafia]] environment, it ended up being given to a background character who up until that point was mainly just a FatComicRelief, and it was an arc that dragged on for several episodes rather than being resolved in one or two. There's also the fact that any sympathy that could be given to Vito is lost on account of [[BoomerangBigot his public homophobia]] and general brutish acts of violence like the rest of the mobsters, and that his actor is generally incapable of [[DullSurprise emoting much]]. Though most people will agree that [[spoiler:his CruelAndUnusualDeath at the hands of Phil Leotardo was uncomfortable and depressing to watch.]]

** Season 6 suffers due to the two-year break after the fifth season as well as an annoyance from fans over the season being split in two. While the earlier episodes are lauded people generally disliked the way that Vito's storyline dragged in the middle of the season. Season 6 part 2 (the last 9 episodes of the series) is more well-liked though there's a decent amount of broken base concerning [[spoiler: Christopher's death]] and the GrandFinale [[spoiler: having NoEnding]].

* TooBleakStoppedCaring: While the show was very popular and well-received during its run, there will inevitably be some people who will watch this and be put off by how reprehensible the main characters are and [[CrapsackWorld how brutal the criminal underworld really is]]. When your main protagonist is a [[TheDon mob boss]], a murderous [[TheSociopath sociopath]] and a major {{Jerkass}} to everyone including his own friends and family, you know you've hit this criteria. In fact, this show may arguably be even worse than ''[[Series/BreakingBad Breaking Bad]]''. As dark as ''Breaking Bad'' got, it at least had a cast full of flawed yet sympathetic characters that never [[MoralEventHorizon crossed the line]]. In ''The Sopranos'', on the other hand, all of the main characters are so deeply flawed, amoral, sociopathic, sadistic, and pointlessly violent that it can be difficult for some people to root for them. It definitely doesn't help that some of the characters worst crimes are played for {{Black Comedy}}.

* CharacterPerceptionEvolution: A.J. Soprano was widely considered TheScrappy during the show's original run, as most viewers saw him as a [[{{Wangst}} whiny]] SpoiledBrat who continually wastes the opportunities his upper-middle class upbringing has provided him with by being a LazyBum. However, as mental health awareness has increased in UsefulNotes/TheNewTens and Main/TheNewTwenties, more and more viewers have come to recognize just how serious the psychological issues and depression he suffers from are and how they cause him to act the way he does. These days, while he's still a BaseBreakingCharacter overall, he's nowehere near the universally hated character he was in the 2000s.
