** Elizabeth is a rather tragic figure. [[NiceGirl A genuinely good woman]] who winds up going through a world of hurt because of the actions of her unfaithful husband. After discovering John is sleeping with Abigail, she retaliates by firing her. But the damage is done and her life with John is now a distant and highly uncomfortable one. Even worse, Abigail turns out to be much more than a lech, and is desperate enough to win John back by [[MurderTheHypotenuse trying to remove Elizabeth from the equation, fatally]]. First through attempted witchcraft, then by accusing [[{{Cuckold}} the cuckolded Proctor]] of that very same crime, resulting in her staying imprisoned for months, all while pregnant. During this time, due to unclear circumstances, by trying to vouch for John's faithfulness, Elizabeth dooms his attempts to stop the trials and save her from her imprisonment, [[OhCrap something she realizes right afterwards when it's too late]]. This decision also leads to her husband's imprisonment, and eventual HeroicSacrifice, with the only silver linings for Elizabeth being that she knows [[TookALevelInKindness John died a good man]], and that her pregnancy would prolong her capture for long enough that [[ThrowTheDogABone she'd outlast the trials and be released]].
** Reverend John Hale comes to Salem [[TragicHero with the best of intentions, and winds up having his whole world turned upside down]]. [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter Falling for the manipulations of Abigail and her fellow fraudulent accusers]], he helps initiate a series of witchcraft trials, not knowing that they'll send many innocents to their graves. Then, during a visit and inspection at the Proctors' house, [[OhCrap Hale starts to realize that the accusations are false, and that the court he's assisted is in the wrong]]. Following this, John tries to rein in the court as best he can, but sees himself overpowered by HangingJudge Thomas Danforth, despite his best efforts. At this point sure that the accusers are lying, he has to watch John Proctor's case against them fail, [[ScrewThisImOutOfHere at which point Hale leaves, quitting the court and denouncing the proceedings]]. Later though, [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone still ridden with guilt over his role in all these deaths and chaos]], Hale returns to Salem [[TheAtoner in a desperate attempt to convince prisoners to falsely confess and save their lives]]. [[BaitTheDog He comes close with Proctor, but he then has to see him refuse to destroy his name]] and opt for a HeroicSacrifice instead. The play then ends with Hale [[AintTooProudToBeg begging on his knees]] for Elizabeth to change her husband's mind so he may live, which she refuses to do. Unlike other characters, John Hale ends the story in no legal trouble, financially fine, and still living. Yet, it's clear that his role in the plot has crushed his spirit and will continue to haunt him for a long time.

* EvilIsCool: Two examples that also count as subversions.
** Abigail is thoroughly despicable, but her ability to manipulate those around her is impressive. Of course, in doing so it backfires on her, as she loses her shot with John and will go on to die as a young woman in exile.
** Thomas Danforth is a legal force of nature, constantly thwarting the plans of the heroes against his trials. At the same time though, he's being played by a bunch of teenage girls and his actions actively make everything worse.
* Abigail Williams is awful in pretty much every sense of the word, but she's often played by attractive actresses, and there's the implication that John is still physically drawn by her even as he plans to stop her trials.

* JerkassWoobie: Abigail in some productions, especially ones that portray her as being utterly, terrifyingly insane rather than pure evil. There's no excuse for what she did, and she becomes ''far'' worse than anyone who ever hurt her, but you can't deny that she's been given a rather raw deal by fate, and that she's had a rough life.
** Mr. and Mrs. Putnam fit into this as well. They lost 7 children on the very days of their births, and their only daughter now seems to have been horribly bewitched to the point of having no appetite.

** Thomas Putnam also has when you see that he’s purposely getting his neighbors accused of witchcraft just so he can inherit their land. This already makes him irredeemable, but he comes across as especially despicable in the film when you see him soullessly watching poor George Jacobs attempt to state his innocence fail, and Putnam shows absolutely no sign of remorse.

to:

** George Jacobs is an unseen figure in the play, but appears in the movie where his role is quite sad. He’s shown to be a perfectly decent an unsuspecting man who gets accused of witchcraft solely so Thomas can steal his land. Poor George is taken to court where he tries to appeal to Putnam’s daughter how he’s never done anything wrong to her, but nevertheless is found guilty. The look on his face and his overall demeanor just screams innocence so much that you can’t help but cry for him when you see him realize just how screwed he is.

!!The Korean Movie

* CatharsisFactor: Gang In-ho smashing a vase into Park Bo-hyun's head.
* CompleteMonster:
** [[WouldHurtAChild Headmaster Lee Kang-bok and Administration Chief Lee Kang-suk]] are [[CreepyTwins identical twins]] whose similar appearances reflect the same amount of evil in one another. As the heads of [[BoardingSchoolOfHorrors Benevolence Academy]] for the hearing impaired, the [[SiblingsInCrime Lee brothers]] secretly use their positions to [[SerialRapist horrifically molest and rape the young girls]] who attend the school. While Kang-bok enjoys recording his rapes and watching them over and over again, Kang-suk simply bribes the girls with candy and the like, then forcing himself on them even if they refuse. Keeping the kids quiet by threatening death to them and their friends, the Lee brothers also utilize the vicious Mr. Park to bully and abuse any kids who step out of line. When brought to court for their crimes, the Lee brothers first ensure to attack the prosecuting children personally, first claiming they were lying before saying they "wanted it", after which they pay off the judge to get themselves off incredibly light, laughing later about how easy it is to get away with their truly wicked deeds.
** The aforementioned [[WouldHurtAChild Mr. Park Bo-hyun]] is a [[SadistTeacher sadistic teacher]] who uses his spot in Jae-ae Academy to [[WouldHurtAChild abuse, beat]], and [[SerialRapist rape any young boys]] he wishes. Though noted to have targeted several other children in the past, Park's despicable treatment of brothers Jeon Min-soo and Young-soo is particularly depraved, as he often beats and rapes one brother while [[ForcedToWatch forcing the other to watch]]. Even when not engaging in outright molestation, Park brutally beats his students bloody, knowing none will speak out lest they too be assaulted, and his violent nature is so bad that on one occasion he is seen [[GolfClubbing taking up a golf club to use on Min-soo]]. After his abuse leads to [[DrivenToSuicide Young-soo committing suicide]], Park later evades any major punishment for his crimes due to paying off Min-soo's grandmother to drop the charges against him. When Min-su attempts to stab Park when the sick teacher tries once more to rape him, Park decides to flat out beat the boy to death as payback.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Any scene that features Yu-ri's appetite. The crowner has to be when In-ho and Yujin have taken the three kids for noodles after an upsetting testimony given in court. * NightmareFuel: What can be worse than disabled children being taken advantage of by those entrusted to take care of them through physical and sexual abuse? ''It really happened''.
** ''All'' the rape scenes! The fact that this film doesn't hold back and shows children being raped ''onscreen''...
*** Park Bo-Hyun's rape of Minsu and his younger brother deserve special mention for how utterly depraved it is. Park takes special pleasure in fondling Minsu's younger brother's anus...
* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: And considering the recent ban on corporal punishment in South Korean schools, the scrapping of the statute of limitations on the reporting of sex crimes and the introduction of longer minimum sentences as part of overhaul on legislation surrounding abuse, the anvils seem to be having the desired effect.

It's heartbreaking because he keeps getting knocked over by the hose but he keeps getting back up.]]
** In-ho's RageBreakingPoint after Headmaster Lee's lawyer makes a vague threat towards In-ho's daughter. It's the first time in the film where we see In-ho overcome by despair, and hearing Gong Yoo's cries of anguish as he repeatedly punches a window until it breaks only adds to the intensity.
** Minsu's reaction when In-ho informs him that Minsu's grandmother lifted the charges placed against Park Bo-hyun. The poor kid is barely holding it together as he questions why the man responsible for the death of his brother is getting away with what he did. It gets worse when he angrily calls In-ho out on failing to keep his promise that Park Bo-hyun would pay. All before Minsu breaks down completely until he's sobbing into In-ho's arms, who can do nothing but apologize over and over again for his failure. Minsu's actor did an especially amazing job at conveying how much he's struggling to sign.
*** The fact that Minsu was denied his chance at justice when he arguably suffered worse than Yeon-doo and Yu-ri under a man just as depraved than the Headmaster...
** The ''entire'' "justice" scene.
* ValuesDissonance: Western audiences may be confused by In-ho's slow response to the obvious abuses occurring around him, but as corporal punishment was legal and widespread in South Korean schools until ''very'' recently, he's bound to be slow on the uptake.
