* DesignatedMonkey: Some believe that the actions that cause people to get angry with [=SpongeBob=], from breaking Gary's shell by hugging him, to knocking Patrick over and ruining his mom's cake, to [[EpicFail getting stuck in pottery]] and knocking Mr. Krabs and his money into the deep fryer, are a little ''too'' [[ContrivedCoincidence conveniently]]-placed together, on top of everyone, especially Patrick of all people, specifically calling [=SpongeBob=] "idiot boy." In fact, the only reason why [=SpongeBob=] ruined Sandy's robot is because he was wearing his water helmet with an opening on the top, when he has a water helmet that covers up the top.

* DesignatedHero: [=SpongeBob=] takes his friends' insults too seriously and leaves town, causing it to collapse into chaos without anyone to cook Krabby Patties. As mayor of New Kelp City, he repeals a law that was enacted to keep the town safe, turning it into a burning wasteland. He flees the city and goes back to his fry cooking job. [=SpongeBob=] made two cities descend into anarchy over the course of a day and never faces any punishment.

* {{Designated Villain}}s: The Bubble Poppin' Boys have a good reason for not wanting bubbles to be blown: the soap can irritate peoples' eyes. One of them even explains this to [=SpongeBob=], and in the end, the citizens of New Kelp City panic from being blinded by bubbles. It's also mentioned that they have a charter (which needs to be granted legally) that prohibits bubbles in the city. So while they are intimidating, they're merely upholding the law, and there are disastrous results after they're kicked out.

** Some fans feel that the plot could've been a lot better without [=SpongeBob=]'s amnesia or his friends' (minus Squidward) {{Jerkass}} moments, as the amnesia came outta nowhere, and [=SpongeBob=] becoming mayor of New Kelp also felt very forced. Especially considering this episode was based on a book called "For the Love of Bubbles" where, instead of running away, [=SpongeBob=] tries to recover a Krabby Patty-shaped bubble he created only to accidentally fall and get amnesia. Not once do Gary, Patrick, Sandy, or Mr. Krabs act like jerks to [=SpongeBob=] at all, including a part where Mr. Krabs hugs him when he is found, and even Squidward is portrayed sympathetically (he's actually ''glad'' when [=SpongeBob=] comes back). And this book came out in 2006, two years before the episode was released and one year before its production.
** Some people felt the order of the characters who chewed [=SpongeBob=] out was messed up: for example, Patrick, [=SpongeBob=]'s best friend, should've come last, while he's the first to chew him out, and Mr. Krabs comes last. In a similar manner, many lamented the fact that [=SpongeBob=] was chewed out for accidents, rather than his actual flaws.
** Given how the other Bikini Bottomites were furious that they didn't get their Krabby Patties because [=SpongeBob=] wasn't around, there could have been an opportunity for [=SpongeBob=]'s friends to be ShamedByAMob for cruelly calling him "idiot boy", even if they were regretful.
* TheWoobie: [=SpongeBob=]'s friends call him "idiot boy" in the beginning, thus running [=SpongeBob=] out of town. Later on, he loses his memory. Even his friends sans Squidward feel bad for him when they find out about this later on.
