** Just outside the entrance to Nobilia is a place where the boy will spin around. If you stand here long enough (after he complains about spinning), he'll sink down and run into a place where there's 99 spice and rice. And this resets when you into town and come back out. Since spice and rice are the two basic commodities used for trading, coming into town before the first time (if you do, the timer starts before the market closes) and basically do everything in the market in the 20 or so minutes you have. You can also just use this to trade for more valuable items and sell them to the appraiser. The only downside is that the boy takes damage at a rate of 1 per second, so stock up on healing.

** Toaster-Dog comes very close if you leave it controlled by the AI. In addition to ludicrously high critical hit rates and a new ranged attack, Toaster-Dog will also randomly counterattack with a full-power attack when he blocks/dodges. You barely need to do anything in the surface tubes sections: just let Toaster-Dog take care of it.

* NeedsMoreLove: Though few would argue it's a masterpiece, it's a decent game and got good reviews from critics on release. However, the game remains relatively obscure due in part to being exclusive to North America and Europe (not even Japan got it), and it hasn't been re-released on Nintendo's Virtual Console yet, so that doesn't look to change soon.

These aren\'t YMMV. Moving.

* AwesomeYetImpractical: The Alchemy System itself. It is a really unique and novel idea, but between the Sword, the Spear, and the Bazooka, Attack spells are not necessary except for 3 bosses: Mr Ribcage #1, Mr Ribcage #2, and Verminator. The Crush Spell is cheap, locks enemies during its animation, and does nice damage against 2 of the 3 bosses (you don't have it when you fight Mr Ribcage #1). Crush covers all of your attack Alchemy needs if you level it up some outside of Nobilia (use the flying skull monsters; you get more money than you spend + nice xp). For Healing spells, the very first healing spell in the game ("Heal") is the cheapest (2 water, 1 root) available, and if you stick with it through the whole game, will end up healing more HP than you have unless you attempt to heal both you and your dog simultaneously (and even then it still heals a huge chunk). That just leaves a Status Cure spell of your choice, and Energize. Everything else is just there for show.

* MagikarpPower: The Spear-type weapons are ridiculously hard to use in normal (non-charge attack) combat, but very quickly get ridiculously overpowered after you gain a level (and even moreso at Lv3 when you can do the double charge). It is a long polearm weapon that is wielded in the worst way possible, to deliver incredibly short-range attacks that will usually get you hit in the process. But once you can throw it... the damage it does is simply overpowered (until you get a Sword leveled up). Combine a spear with the spell that gives you near-instant charge attacks and you got yourself a bazooka... that does more damage than an actual bazooka and doesn't send you flying!

** The clones you fight after the first section of the forest maze each have an alchemy spell. The first one uses Flash, the second uses Crush, but the last one... The last one has an end game spell called Nitro. Nitro will basically take a good two-thirds of the boy's life.
* TooAwesomeToUse: In addition to the above mentioned Call Beads, you might not use your limited-use alchemy when your unlimited-use weapons will do the trick just fine. Exceptions are, naturally, healing, protection and buff spells. Adversely, once you would want to use those attack spells (lookin' at you, Verminator), they'll be woefully underleveled and you probably won't find the right ingredients at the nearest alchemy shop to LevelGrind them.
* WakeUpCallBoss: In addition to those mentioned above, there's Thraxx. Up until you meet him, every enemy attack can be dodged, and even those that hit aren't that damaging. Thraxx will hit you for 5 damage and massive recoil every time you hit his exposed heart. He'll also use three attacks that can target the Hero in any place of the arena, two of which are unavoidable, and that each deal comparably high amounts of damage. To top it all off, you can only carry 6 healing leaves and you probably didn't get a full load of dog biscuits in town. Your only hope is that the maggots drop leaves or give you enough experience to level.

** Much earlier in the swap, doubling as a WakeUpCallBoss, Salabog hovers over the swamp out of range of your normal weapons, and as above can only be damaged through usage of a leveled-up spear or alchemy. There are two main differences--first, because he's the third boss of the game, Salabog is fought at a time when you have very few alchemy formulas at low levels, whereas Verminator is fought late in the game when you've powered your alchemy up. To make up for being out of reach, occasionally Salabog will snap its head forward to come in range. However, this also hits you for some nasty damage, so get out of the way.
