Added DiffLines:

* MisaimedFandom: A lot of people seemed to miss the part where Scott isn't really supposed to be a great guy for most of the movie, and only actually starts making up for it the second go around of the final battle.

* HilariousInHindsight:
** This film could easily be considered "Superhero Crossover Couples: The Movie". [[Film/BirdsOfPrey2020 Huntress]] previously dumped [[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse Captain America]], Film/{{Superman|Returns}} (who is also [[Series/{{Arrowverse}} The Atom]], and would go on to hook up with Film/{{Captain Marvel|2019}}), and [[WebAnimation/DCSuperheroGirls Batgirl]], and then went on to hook up with [[WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie Robin]] (who also dated Captain Marvel in the past). For bonus points, Superman is taken down by Film/{{The Punisher|2004}} for not being vegan enough.
** This wouldn't be the last time Creator/MaeWhitman [[WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse plays a lesbian]].

** At one point, Matthew Patel exclaims "You will pay for your INSOLENCE!!!" A certain [[ThatOneBoss infuriating boss]] late into [[VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles a certain JRPG]] that released a few years later would then become known for saying that same line.

* ValuesResonance: Wallace, for being a positive gay character who isn't used solely for comic relief and his identity isn't ''solely'' tied to his orientation, being the snarky voice of reason (he does get some of the funniest lines in the movie, but he's also considerably wiser than Scott) and the first person to outright tell Scott that he needs to stop leading on Knives. Even Stacy's reaction to Wallace making out with her boyfriend doesn't get much more than an annoyed, "Wallace! ''Again?"'' and neither of them are condemned for getting together.

* HardTruthAesop: The fact that in the climax, the Sword of Self-Respect last much longer than the Sword of Love could be seen as "Self-respect is more important than love".
* HarsherInHindsight: Ramona's line when she fights Knives, "I didn't steal Scott! I didn't steal ''anyone!''" becomes this after her actress, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, received a lot of backlash online after Ewan[=McGregor=] announced he was leaving his wife and seen dating her, with people blaming Winstead for the divorce, one of the most vocal being [=McGregor's=] daughter.

The emphasis on the problems of 20-somethings alienated people over 30, the allusions to 80's-90s video games and pop culture alienated most people under the age of 21 (who in most cases wouldn't have been born or old enough when the games came out), and Creator/MichaelCera was subject of some HypeBacklash thanks to the perception that [[{{Typecasting}} he'd been playing the same meek hipster characters over and over]] ([[NeverTrustATrailer a notion that the trailers did little to dispel, heavily featuring Scott's meeker moments and omitting his more jerkass ones]]).

** There's also Creator/AnnaKendrick (Stacey Pilgrim), Creator/AubreyPlaza (Julie Powers), Creator/MaeWhitman (Roxy Richter), Creator/EllenWong (Knives Chau), Creator/KieranCulkin (Wallace Wells) and Creator/AlisonPill (Kim Pine), all of whom had already begun to make names for themselves at the time the film was released, but who have since cemented themselves as respectable (and, in some cases, award-nominated) actors. The result is a Retroactive AllStarCast.

* MST3KMantra: If you're thinking too hard about the crazy out-of-nowhere Evil Ex fights and unexplained (though consistent) 8 to 16 bit video game logic, you're doing it wrong. Just lean back and laugh. The relationships between the characters are done completely seriously though.

* RealityEnsues: You might think that with [[RPGMechanicsVerse everything that had happened in the film, a]] [[spoiler: [[SetSwordsToStunMode sword would not be able to impale, let alone kill Scott...]] But one managed to do so. And he died.]]
