* TheUntwist: People seem to make a big deal about [[spoiler: Kafuka's real name being An Akagi.]] They kind of gave it away in numerous scenes.

* HilariousInHindsight: In response to the [[Durarara Shizuo and Izaya]] pairing, RyogoNarita says that he can't say anything because he likes to ship Harumi and Chiri. One chapter shows that Harumi is indeed a Shizuo/Izaya fan. Although it's difficult to say which came first without a proper time reference.

* HarsherInHindsight: The MagicalGirl opening may nowadays bring back [[HighOctaneNightmareFuel horrifying]] or [[TearJerker tear-jerker]] memories of ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''.

* ParanoiaFuel: Episode 1 of ''Goku'' hints heavily that the things we see on air, surreal as they are, are actually just censored versions of ''much'' more [[HighOctaneNightmareFuel disturbing things]].

** And then there's the "[[stroke:propaganda]] promotional manga" informing the public on the use of spent nuclear fuel in manga Volume 4, supposedly put out by a PaperThinDisguise for the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) (complete with Maria [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic briefly turning into a marionette with visible strings]]). TEPCO of course became the most notorious utility company in Japan (and perhaps the world) after the 2011 Fukushima meltdown.

* AcceptableTargets: Frequent targets including pervy {{otaku}} or NEET guys, immigrants, and [[strike:China]] "a certain country" whose constant spying on Japan goes unacknowledged by the government for political reasons (North Korea gets a similar treatment).
* AwesomeAnachronisticApparel
* CrossesTheLineTwice: Suicide, [[DudeNotFunny not funny]]. Suicidal teacher winning the love and affection of his students by promising to ''take them with him'' when he does it, hilarious.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: The soundtrack varies between hauntingly beautiful orchestral pieces as season main themes, great piano minuets for Nozomu, and the rather light, silly fare used for the rest of the show.
** The opening themes all use a mixture of punk vocals (for the main singer), J-poppy backup singers, grunge guitar and (for the fourth OP) soaring piano melodies.  The ending themes are an appropriately crazy mix of styles that manages to mesh, from swing jazz to surf rock to punk-infused cabaret.

*** Also, ''Kurayami Shinjuu Soushisouai.''

* HighOctaneNightmareFuel: '''''NEVER''''' put [[{{Troll}} Meru]] in a position where her phone signal goes out of range. She will revert to a ferocious mess of mindless [[BlackSpeech demonic babbling]] straight from the firey pits of Hell that would make Satan smile like the Cheshire Cat!!

* NightmareFuel: Though most of the show is just wacky, some segments have twisted the surreal too far.
** The end of episode 5's purifying is a startling vignette that can haunt the dreams of those unprepared for it.
** Zoku's first episode is a treasure trove of NightmareFuel, in particular Kafuka's creepy Traumerei and school lighting fixings turning into ''the bottom halves of crying babies''.
** The ending of the hikikomori episode creeped this editor out.
** The eighth episode of ''Zoku'' ended with a moment to rival the ending of season 1, episode 5. And it's all the more terrifying considering it focused on [[spoiler:Kafuka, who has been shown at times to be as homicidal as Chiri, if not even more insane.]]
** Chiri has been letting bits of this slip more and more lately, such as her description of a childhood game called "[[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMIyFE_6QC4 Meat Doll]]"
** One episode focuses on using different genre and animation styles. The magical girl pastiche was adorable, but the simplistic claymation was quite frightening, and the "acid" style forced some viewers to stop watching.
** The openings to ''Goku''. Creepy, jerkily-animated paper cutouts of characters with paper cutout!Maria crying arms and legs? Sure, why not? Adding weird old-timey effects and [[{{Eye Scream}} DOOR EYES]]? Sure! Oh, we forgot to include the part where [[spoiler: Kafuka is [[strike: standing]] dancing and tossing flower petals on the dead bodies of her classmates]]. No problem, we'll add that, as well as a heaping of {{Mind Screw}}!
** Heck, most of the openings and endings qualify quite well.

** One of Mayo Mitama favorite hobbies is raping dogs; she likes to use small sharp objects like pencils and branches to anally violate them. Actually, just Mayo Mitama in general.

* HoYay: There's a bit in episode 10 of ''Zoku'', with all of the boys in the class directing it towards Nozomu.
** One episode has a segment looking at chicken/egg issues and giving just-so-story explanations. For the issue of whether underwear proceeded modesty, Jun and Kino are shown as Adam and (St)eve in the Garden of Eden and "check each other out" before opting for fig leafs.
** Ikkyu: He wanted to marry Rin largely to have a closer relationship with Nozomu (the money and status didn't hurt), and one episode indicates him as a workable romantic choice for Nozomu.

* {{Wangst}}: Itoshiki's ability to be left in despair by anything, any time, anywhere, followed by suicide attempts. Fortunately for the viewers, this isn't taken even remotely seriously.
** In fact, [[HilarityEnsues it can be downright hilarious]].

* AmbiguouslyAutistic: Nozumu "Mr Dispair" Itoshiki himself.

* MemeticMutation: "X has left me in despair!"

** It's quite possible to say that nearly every single recurring or main character has their own fandom.
