Once Original Now Common - as written, this example implies that bullying is tolerated in Japan but in western societies it is not, which is an overbroad claim. Moved some of sentiments expressed to Character Perception Evolution.

* CharacterPerceptionEvolution: Utena's characterization is unusual, but in a way that may frustrate viewers. She is an amiable, straightforward girl, but she does not read into the things going on around her very much. It gets hard to watch when there is so much around her to read into. She may come across as a flat character until she starts showing more emotional vulnerability later in the series.

* OnceOriginalNowCommon: Coupled with ValuesDissonance, but some modern viewers, especially Western ones might see Utena as a little flat, all her quirks and ticks have been copied to death, the fact that she's tomboyish might fly over people's heads who now not only don't see anything odd with it unlike back in the day, but in the west almost expect it. Also, her motivation to protect Anthy like a prince to his princess by confronting her abusers is not easily understood since in the west that would be the logical, decent thing to do unlike the "don't get involved" Japanese custom. This can come to a point where they think Utena to be flat until she starts showing more emotional vulnerability and stereotypically feminine behavior later in the series. To make matters worse, Utena herself is a very reactive character rather than proactive usually dealing with the stuff thrown at her for about the first 30 episodes.

** These days, anime fans who look up this series are likely to compare it to its antecedents,
and ticks have been copied to death, say "Oh! This is like Madoka Magica," or "Oh! This is like Revue Starlight," when the fact directors of these works openly acknowledge that she's tomboyish they were inspired by Ikuhara. Ikuhara has helped enough creatives break into animation over the years that industry watchers suggest the people he's taught form an "Ikuhara school" of animation.
** Contemporary viewers may wonder what is so revolutionary about this supposedly revolutionary girl, Utena. Tomboy heroines are pretty common now, so if that's her distinguishing point it
might fly over people's the heads who now not only don't see anything odd with it unlike of today's viewers. Some viewers may also be unimpressed by the show's positioning of standing up to bullies as a heroic act (given the increased focus on bullying prevention since the 90s.) The reality is that bullying ends up being small potatoes in terms of the issues the series tackles, and action-oriented tomboy heroines weren't unheard of in 90s anime either. In fact, there's a history of crossdressing shoujo heroines going back to the 1950s that this series is tapping into. The difference between Utena and Sapphire or Oscar is that she stays in the day, but in masculine/feminine and gay/straight gray space to the west almost expect it. General clarification on work content

** This wiki used to have this series listed as AnimeFirst because Chiho Saito was the last member to join [=Be-PaPas=] -- which may be true, but the manga was being published several months before the anime started airing, which is referenced by Saito-sensei in the early volumes. It's also worth noting that many tropes that are deconstructed in the anime series are played much straighter in the manga.

General clarification

* FauxSymbolism: Various weird visual cues, the most common being rotating stylized roses, which don't appear to have any particular meaning. Ikuhara doesn't help either -- he gives vague, non sequitur comments like saying the Shadow Girls are aliens (which would explain the repeated flying saucer imagery in their performances...). On the other hand, the pointing fingers in episode 22 seem to stand for ShipTease.

* FauxSymbolism: Various The show builds up more and more weird visual cues, cues as it goes on, and the most common being rotating stylized roses, which don't appear connection between the imagery and whatever scene it appears in probably isn't intuitive. The uncertainty can encourage an impression that the other hand, show is weird just to be weird - there's no meaning behind the pointing fingers in episode 22 seem spinning roses, they just signify that this is an artsy show and you're supposed to stand assume it's "deeply symbolic," but any attempt make them meaningful is just made up by some yahoo on the internet, or your friend who made you watch this show, or something you came up with on your own. (You can think up your own meaning for ShipTease.the symbolism, by the way. That's part of the reason why Ikuhara is so vague about it.)
