* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Pretty much the reason why the film bombed. Though competently made, the film is ''heavily'' marred by the fact that Bobby Fischer's pride and utter contempt for everybody and everything other than chess made him a completely unlikeable piece of crap protagonist. His only redeeming quality is his intelligence, but it isn't enough to cover his faults or make anybody like him. The movie seems to intentionally portray him as such, but when the audience has nobody to root for and no desire to see the conflict of the film through to its end then people start to leave the theater. You actually want to see the perfunctory Russian antagonist win just to make this asshole suffer. By the end of the film, the audience is just as exhausted as the poor schlubs in the movie that have to babysit Bobby through his life-long string of temper tantrums.

The fact that Fischer's own life ended up so badly and he was known for being extremely bigoted and anti-Semitic certainly doesn't help.

* MemeticMutation: "THAT WAS TODAY!! TODAY!!!" Bobby lashes out on Carmine after quitting chess became a meme on May 6, 2021 from the 10th anniversary of the original date of the scrapped "Spider-Man 4" as Tobey Maguire was the main star of the original trilogy. The clip was used out of context making sound like Spider-Man was upset that he was robbed on the fourth movie.

The scene is well acted, which is a source of memes for an external reason does not make it narm.

* {{Narm}}: The scene where Bobby lashes at Carmine is suppose to be a heartbreaking scene, but thanks to the recent 10th anniversary of the scrapped Spider-Man 4 meme, many fans would see this too silly.
