** Where's the human world's Sunset Shimmer? It's normally assumed that she's out there somewhere, given that everyone else seems to have a counterpart in both worlds, but the whereabouts of a hypothetical "Human Sunset" were never brought up. This leaves fans to fill in the blanks; some fanfics have Sunset meeting her human counterpart, some have the two aware of each other and nothing else, and some say that there's only one Sunset.

** FridgeHorror would suggest that Sunset Shimmer doesn't have much of a future in this alternate world; given that she's from another dimension, it follows that she would have no public records or identification, making secondary school and long-term careers unlikely. Fan works that deal with the cast graduating high school often examine Sunset's feelings over her uncertain future after high school, and the option of returning to Equestria for good comes hand in hand with that.

** Sunset and Twilight have canonical {{Love Interest}}s, but by far the dominant ship within the ''Equestria Girls'' fandom is Sunset x Twilight (either of them, [[OneTrueThreesome or even both]]). Their RomanticTwoGirlFriendship scenes throughout the series have provided plenty of ShippingFuel, and some claim they have more romantic chemistry with each other than with their intended partners.

** The first couple of movies got some criticism for having all the girls look the same, almost to the extent of being {{Palette Swap}}s. The parent show is infamous for reusing character models all the time and just recoloring them, and among the Mane Six and many other ponies, they have the same basic body type and the only difference aside from coloration is their hairstyle and cutie mark. But because the designs of the ponies are so simple, it's not always apparent that they use the same base assets, while the human characters wear clothes that make it more obvious, since they all wear T-shirts and skirts with boots, and the only differences are details like Pinkie and Rainbow having jackets.

** The premise alone would drive many fans of ''Friendship Is Magic'' to ignore its existence. Many have since softened since the series has [[GrowingTheBeard improved in quality over time]], and avoided affecting the show such that it could be ignored by those still inclined. There are still fans who prefer to imagine ''EG'' as non-canon, not because they dislike it but because they don't want aspects to be canon (for example Twilight visiting a human world, humans canonically not existing in Equestria, Celestia having a student before Twilight, Flash Sentry, etc).
** [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW The IDW comics]] set there, however, have all been condemned by fans of the ''EG'' series. The 2013 Annual for seemingly confirming Sunset Shimmer's negative depictions and [[SoOkayItsAverage being so bland otherwise]] there was no reason to accept it and its minor flaws. The 2014 Holiday Special, in [[AuthorsSavingThrow attempting to redeem Sunset]], [[HappyEndingOverride negated her hard earned happy ending]] from ''Rainbow Rocks'' over a [[BrokenBase very controversial]] plot that, while [[FanficFuel inspiring more fanwork then anything else from the comics]], had an [[EsotericHappyEnding ending many were unhappy with]]. ''[[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFiendshipIsMagic Fiendship Is Magic #3]]'' was the OriginStory for the Dazzlings/Sirens, which failed to show, and even [[FanDislikedExplanation disproved]], much of what made them popular and interesting. The story of the Sirens' banishment was retold by [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E26ShadowPlayPart2 Shadow Play - Part 2]], making the the Fiendship issue non-canon.

* DracoInLeatherPants: The Sirens/The Dazzlings are this for the ''Equestria Girls'' series as a whole. They're the most popular villains from the franchise by a country mile, and they often get portrayed in fan works much more sympathetically than their canon counterparts. Since very little is revealed about their backstories, fans have taken semi-canon sources (like the ''Fiendship is Magic'' comic book on them) or just made up their own backstories for them. The Sirens are often made out to be lost souls, sisters who have no one but each other, [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld ageless beings]] who are now forced to WalkTheEarth with nothing, {{Tragic Monster}}s who don't want to feed on hate but have no choice, or showing [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone remorse for the things they've done]]. In canon, the Sirens are a TerribleTrio who want to spread a HatePlague, caused people to be {{brainwashed}} against their friends, and show absolutely no remorse for any of it. Even in their appearance in ''Sunset's Backstage Pass'', the Sirens don't have a HeelRealization; the closest they get is admitting their plans failed, and [[RetiredMonster they're just as nasty as they ever were]]. It's rare to find a fan work that tries to stay in line with the canon portrayal of the Sirens as villains, and even rarer to find someone who actively ''dislikes'' them.

The shorter length of the series' later media means less time to build up the threat level of the villains, and none ofthem have had such recurring appearances to get the development Sunset and Twilight did, thus their defeats come off as anti-climactic and their reformations upon their defeat come off as sudden and unearned.

** Timber Spruce, introduced in ''Legend of Everfree'', gets flak from some people for similar reasons to Flash Sentry, as Timber is viewed as another SatelliteLoveInterest, this time for Human Twilight. There's certainly more attempts to make him plot-relevant in his introductory movie than Flash Sentry was in his, especially in the climax. His only appearances outside of ''Legend of Everfree'' have been in the shorts, and even in ''Everfree,'' his character isn't fleshed out much more than "Twilight's boyfriend." Time will tell if any characterization outside of this gets brought up, but Timber is currently in a similar position to Flash Sentry after the first movie's debut.

** In comparison to their canon (implied) {{Love Interest}}s, Twilight x Sunset seems to become the more dominant ship within the ''Equestria Girls'' fandom for nearly every piece of media where the two girls get to share screentime, whether it's because of their FoeYay-looking interactions from the first movie or their RomanticTwoGirlFriendship scenes from the second movie and on.
*** Even that has its share of ShipToShipCombat, as fans debate which Twilight to ship Sunset with. Some go for Princess Twilight, others Human Twilight, and some just say [[{{OT3}} both Twilights]].
** In regards to Flash Sentry, many fans are far more accepting of him hooking up with Sunset Shimmer (due to the FanficFuel regarding their history as a former couple and their interactions in later movies) or Derpy (often being by Flash's side, especially when he's being ignored by the other girls) than with Princess Twilight in spite of (or perhaps, [[StrangledByTheRedString because of]]) the heavy-handed attempts at turning them into a couple.

** There are many fans that believe that Sunset Shimmer isn't being utilized properly by the Equestria Girls series, and that she should be transplanted to the [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic series proper]] instead of [[BaseBreakingCharacter Starlight Glimmer]] joining the main cast.[[note]]While WordOfGod is that Starlight was ''not'' based on Sunset nor was she added to the cast as a result of Sunset's popularity, part of the fandom still thinks of her as a ReplacementScrappy for Sunset.[[/note]]
** After ''Friendship Games'', the later antagonists of the series have either never appeared again or only appeared as brief cameos later on, despite most of them reforming and becoming friends with the heroines.

** The release of the book "Friendship to Remember" depicted [[spoiler:Sunset Shimmer returning to Equestria and reuniting with Celestia, which is something fans have been wanting for ages]]. Then it was later revealed that this was going to be adapted into ''Forgotten Friendship''.

** Anytime a character is given lips. Human lips just ''doesn't look right'' on an MLP character, human or pony. Though some fans feel that [[GrandmaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave Principal Cinch]] manages to be the sole exception.

** Flash Sentry is a slower, more gradual case. He spent the first movie as a SatelliteLoveInterest for Twilight that did little to endear himself to fans. As the series continued he got a steadily decreased role until he was slotted more firmly into the supporting cast, and began to show some more personality as a goofy but likeable CasanovaWannabe. The result: his reduced role cooled the hatred for him while the improved characterization he exhibits when he ''does'' appear has begun to win him some respect.

* MisBlamed: In responce to criticisms of the franchise's villains being EasilyForgiven, director Ishi Rudell [[https://mobile.twitter.com/ishiH3Art/status/1017125609305042944 has stated]] that it's not up to him. Many assumed this meant the Hasbro executives were responsible for it because of how extensive ExecutiveMeddling has been in the MLP G4 franchise. However, the statement could just as easily apply to the shows’ writers, as Rudell’s job is to adapt their scripts into animation.
