While their antics are PlayedForLaughs (such as the greedy Kuroji), later games show that their actions are catching up to them and while they save the day, they unknowingly make things worse.
** Also, the heroes neglecting their duties results in the birth of an EldritchAbomination, an absent-minded SealedEvilInACan destroying the barrier and a hidden revolution, now that the tyrannical former hero of Mugenri has left in charge a self-centered TeenGenius. Way to go, Tsurubami.

* GoodBadBugs: Compared to Touhou, Len'En has more difficult spellcards and the patters are similar to Seihou. Luckily the playable characters have glitches that makes them insanely powerful under the right circumstances. Especially noticeable in ''Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle''.

** In the Touhou series (which Len'en is heavily based of) the miko Reimu Hakurei, while preferring not to be bothered, really hates that she isn't recognized enough as a miko and doesn't get enough worshipers for her god at her shrine. If the situation with Tsurubami is to be believed, then the alternative is [[TheDreaded much, much worse]].

* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: For diehard Touhou fans who consider this series to be a blatant Touhou rip-off, despite [=JynX=] averting this with ''Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle''.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: According to WordOfGod, Fumikado was supposed to be the FinalBoss of ''Reactivate Majestical Imperial'' but as the story developed, Shion ended up taking that place and Fumikado became the stage 5 boss.

* CompleteMonster: Suzumi Kuzu. Most of the characters find them creepy and for VERY good reason. For starters, their modus operandi is to make Tsubakura cross the DespairEventHorizon and have done many actions in the past to nearly kill Tsubakura and/or Yabusame. They even try to attack and kill the Shitodo Siblings because they think it would make Tsubakura feel even worse, and even manage to cost Hooaka an arm. They're responsible for causing the whole war in Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle, all just to lure out Tsubakura and kill them. To make matters worse, it's HEAVILY implied that they did something horrible to [[spoiler: Tsurubami, the only one who could possibly even relieve Tsubakura and Yabusame of their duties and let them back into the outside world, hence why they take the priest's appearance in their Extra + a scenario]]. If Suzumi's appearance causes the normally cold and calculating Tsubakura to flip right into rage after pressing their BerserkButton about their deceased mother, Fumikado to drop attempts of flaunting their superiority to do something against them instead, Kuroji to kill them and bring them into Tsubakura without even considering how they'd get more money if Suzumi was alive, and Tenkai right into TranquilFury for the above spoiler, Suzumi probably REALLY deserves this trope.

** ''Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle'' also reveals that Tsubakura has a DarkAndTroubledPast. We don't know much about it except that they're an apathetic TeenGenius, their mother has been dead for a while and Suzumi has been tormenting them for a long time (and it's implied Suzumi was the one responsible for killing Tsuba's mom). What makes this probably worse than anything is that WordOfGod reveals that Tsubakura will have it way worse in the sequel, now that Suzumi followed them to Mugenri in order to continue tormenting them. Poor Tsubakura...

*** WordOfGod implies that they hated being a MuggleBornOfMages in the Outside World and loves living in Mugenri because they got powers. Also, the series hints as Kuroji's route becomes a ProtagonistJourneyToVillain. Even Tenkai is worried that Tsurubami choose to spirit away Kuroji, who has potential to become villainous. At the end of ''Reactivate Majestical Imperial'', Saragimaru says that Kuroji will eventually become DrunkWithPower. By the time of ''Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle'', Saragimaru's fears are true.

** Is Tsubakura a cruel, selfish {{Jerkass}} and SociopathicHero that cares about nothing beside their own welfare and enjoyment? Or are they lashing out at everyone because they were designated as the hero of a CrapsackWorld without their consent.

** Shion - really a nice, sweet person who had the rotten luck of being born froma EldritchAbomination flower born of evil spirits and cannot help being influenced by them, or a KarmaHoudini who knew full well how much damage they were doing while infesting Mugenri with spirits and only did a HeelFaceTurn in the end just because they want to consume souls scot-free?

*** Sese in '''Brilliant Pagoda or Haze Castle''' starts out with a pretty pathetic shot type, but jumps to being absolutely devastating once you have them reach 60% power. At 80% or 100%, they can pretty much end spellcards ''in seconds'' once they get close, to the point where often the boss doesn't even get to fire a bullet by the time their health gets destroyed! Sese was so overpowered that eventually a patch was released that gave bosses a period of invulnerability at the beginning of each spellcard.

*** Similarly, Kuroji. They have the fastest focused speed, their shot is a semi-aimed widespread, but it has low damage even at full power and to make reliable damage to bosses, the player needs to bomb at the boss right in front of their. Same with Sukune after they became playable.
