* HoYay: Don't be fooled by the heavy political themes and the overall FirstContact main plot of the series. There is plenty of these moments.
** Hanamori constantly ends up in a SecurityCling to Shindou.
*** When he sees Shindou screaming in pain in response to zaShunina's [[BrownNote failed attempt to communicate with him through telepathy]], [[CowardlyLion Hanamori]] ''almost instantly'' overcomes his fear of the the AlienGeometries that was surrounding them (as well as the traumatic experience that was getting trapped inside of Kado in the first place) and rushed to help him.
*** When he finally exits from KADO in episode 6, Hanamori is running to Shindou while shedding TearsOfJoy and almost jumps on him before barely stopping. Shindou than gives him an AffectionateGestureToTheHead.
** When Kojiro and Asano meet again they end up hugging each other in relief. Now remember Japan's cultural standards regarding hugs...
** The biggest one, however, is whatever is going on between [[BlueAndOrangeMorality zaShunina]] and [[{{Ambadassador}} Shindou]]. Seriously. A human shouldn't feel that comfortable around an alien. [[EveryoneCanSeeIt This was noted even InUniverse.]]
*** The fact that they are essentially turning more and more into HeterosexualLifePartners with each episode really raised quite a few eyebrows, not just among the YaoiFangirls.
*** In the preview for episode 6, zaShunina seems to be giving Shindou a hug from behind.
*** After the episode was released, Yaha-kui doesn't exactly ''hug'' Shindou, but he is still had NoSenseOfPersonalSpace around him.
*** Yaha-kui openly says to Shindou in in episode 6 that he is glad how much Shindou got accommodated to the anisotropic.
*** In episode 12, they [[spoiler:exchange a (one-sided at least) HeadbuttOfLove before their deaths]].

** Yaha-kui can be seen as this, though he seems to lean more towards WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds at the end. All he wanted to do was contact humanity and uplift them to a point where they would improve themselves and he could have a steady stream of information to observe. He somehow gains human emotions along the way, which affects his psyche in ways that aren't particularly healthy, and in the end [[spoiler:he ends up killing the man he loves and dies to a testament of the love he shared with another person- one of his own kind, even.]] That's not to say that his morally ambiguous attitude throughout the series was sympathetic however, and he ''does'' go off the deep end in the last third of the show.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Saraka has been attracting some negative attention, due to her seeming immaturity as a negotiator compared to her peers, her {{Tsundere}} traits, and her opposition to [=ZaShunina=]. By the halfway point in the series, she acquired a large group of detractors, but after [[spoiler:her reveal as an anisotropic being like [=ZaShunina=]]], some viewers justified her stance and found her a more interesting character. The romance she eventually finds herself in with Shindo and how it was written is also a point of contraction with detractors.
* Shindo comes off as this in the last third of the show, given that he's willing to do some underhanded manipulations of even his closest allies in order to move forward. His moral ambiguity is even called into question by some fans.

* TheWoobie: By the end of the series, most people felt very bad for Hanamori. He's a generally innocent guy who, while clumsy, tries his hardest. He ends up manipulated by his best friend, is crying his eyes out when he's told to complete what may be his last request, and the ninth episode reveals that he's in love with Shindo, making all of his reactions towards him worse. [[spoiler:Then we learn in the last episode that he raised Shindo and Saraka's child for 16 years, she calls him by his first name despite this, and that his friend essentially dies.]] Someone just give the poor man a break and a hug.

* JumpingTheShark: Consensus seems to be that once episode 10 comes around, the shows quality takes a nosedive.

* CreatorsPet: Despite interviews stating otherwise (which may or may not make it better), some disgruntled views find this to be the case for Saraka. All of here development as a character is seen as rushed, her viewpoint and opposition isn't explored very well even if it does make sense to later revelations, her reveal as [[spoiler:an ansiotropic being]] is rushed as well, but the audience is expected to take her side and she gets much of what she wanted out of the whole ordeal.

** For a character with 3 minutes of screen-time ''total'', [[spoiler:Yukika]] is ''hated'' by pretty much the entire fanbase of the show.

* AssPull: The practical embodiment of it is named [[spoiler:Yukika. She quite literally drives in off-screen, fixes all the problems, and then up and vanishes with no fanfare.]]

* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: One thing that can be generally agreed on is the exceptional CG art and animation. Lots of praise went around for the expressiveness of the 3D models.
