* AngstAversion: [[spoiler:A child gets decapitated]] in the first hour of the movie, and it actually does nothing but ''[[FromBadToWorse get worse]]'' from that point afterwards. ** While Alex Wolff's performance has been mostly praised, viewers are quite split on his childish way of crying. Some find to be distracting, cringy and unintentionally hilarious while others find it to be a fairly realistic reaction, arguing how the events that Peter goes through explain the character's gradual infantalization well enough.

** [[spoiler: The movie ends with Peter wearing a Burger King-esque paper crown while surrounded by naked, prostrating cultists yelling "HAIL PAIMON!" It definitely got a laugh out of some people]].
** Annie [[spoiler: banging her head on the attic door]] can come across unintentionally hilarious for some people.
** Peter [[spoiler: Throwing himself out of the window after seeing 3 naked people standing in the attic]] is already a little amusing for some. However, the way the camera immediately pans down [[spoiler: to his body lying the bushes]] is done in an almost ''Creator/WesAnderson''-style manner that it can turn the scene into unintentional comedy gold.

* NarmCharm: The overtly supernatural nature of the film’s final act which features [[spoiler: Steve getting burnt to a crisp, a seance scene, and a possessed Annie crawling on the walls and ceiling]], can across as silly for some when compared to the relatively more grounded and realistic psychological horror of the first and second acts. But that doesn’t stop it from being absolutely terrifying nonetheless.

** How much did Charlie know about the plot? Although a child (and therefore having limited responsibility), did she always know that she and her brother were both [[spoiler:guaranteed to die, and that her mother and father were almost guaranteed to do so too? So is she actually happy to be back in Peter's body, or something else entirely]]?

** Big debates in regards to the movie are [[spoiler: who really was at fault for Charlie's death? There are debates on Annie being at fault due to her forcing Peter (''and'' Charlie, mind you, who voiced concern that she didn't want to go) while some point at Peter not being responsible in taking care of his sister. ** In another strange sense, there's an interpretation that the entire film is actually more about [[spoiler: Charlie actually becoming a trans boy and the entire film is an allegory to how Charlie starts to transition (becoming Peter), her family rejects it, and finds happiness with others]]. Although this theory is surprisingly small and has become known through youtuber Nyx Fears (as implied she made the theory due to her own transitioning).

** Although Alex Wolff generally delivers a great performance, some viewers have criticized the childish way he cries in some scenes. Of course, his character Peter is only 16, and the kinds of situations he finds himself in would make make almost anyone regress. It's also possibly [[spoiler: an effect of being possessed by Paimon, who still believes he's Charlie, a 13-year-old girl]].

no need for this gushing, the following bullet at least expands on what was actually discussed above

** A lot of people think horror is supposed to be fun because Hollywood has bastardized it and turned it into fun. ''Horror'' is supposed to be ''horrifying,'' not fun. Most people don't want ''true'' horror, they want kid-gloves "horror," they want to laugh and have a good time and get startled by jump-scares. This film is not supposed to be fun, it's not Hollywood's "horror." It's supposed to fuck you up, to really ''horrify'' you. It's genuine horror. That's what makes it such an all-time great in the genre.
