When one of Eric's antics potentially cost them their source for fire, everyone downright wishes he was gone. Eric is clearly hurt by this, but it seems he knew he screwed up big, as he spends a few moments trying (and eventually succeeding in fixing their lighter). Knowing that he was already planning on leaving the group to find a way home, and he not made things right in time, he would have had no reason to stay, and more importantly, no one would have bothered stopping him.
